Work Header

König when he actually gets the life He deserves.

Summary:

You are the new medic at the base. As you walk pass the hall, you notice a big guy sitting alone, seeming a bit stressed with his sighs. You decided to buy him a cold drink, thinking maybe it will help him somehow.

Notes:

I’m obsessed with him tbh. I mean who doesn’t? 🤷♀️

Chapter Text

With a disgruntled grit in his voice, muttering and mumbling, evidently away and not so concerned in socializing, he'd look elsewhere to his weaponry, hold up in his own head as his gloved fingers gently traced his Glock , sighing. Only to jolt and perk up in such surprise to seeing you sit down aside him, his leg bobbing a little by company alone.

He sees a young girl sitting next to him. She must be (y/n), the new medic. He has heard everyone talked about how pretty she is, and it’s true, now that he can see her in person.

She looks softer and smaller than he thought though.

“Guten Morgen …I mean good morning... Is there something you need? " His accent lavished his words, politely glancing at you.

The girl hands him a cold can of Coke with a chuckle

“Sorry if I bothered you. It’s just I noticed you over here alone, looking stressed, So I thought a cold drink would help.”

König's lips curve up in the slightest hint of a smile as his eyes follow the gesture of a soft hand handing him a cola can.

" Well thank you...that was very kind of you. "

A slight nod of his head and he would pop the can open with the twist of the tab, taking a long pull from the opening as he set it down on his knee.

" Why would you have noticed me? "

The girl chuckles as she stands up.

“It’s hard not to. You’re literally so tall. And you’re always so quiet.”

She smiles as she walks away with a wave goodbye

“Again, sorry to bother you. If you ever need anything, I’m at the med room.”

His eyes followed her departure, thinking about what she said...she's right on all fronts. He sighs as she leaves, glancing at his weapon once more.

"...ja..no problem."

He softly calls out to her as she goes to leave, his accent ever pronounced.

He lifts his mask to drink the cold Coke.

A refreshing, if not brief, moment of calm washes over his mind with the cool bubbly drink, feeling the warmth cascade down his throat. His eyes close for a moment as he finishes, and before opening, he takes in a sigh...but then a soft laugh, smiling, amused to himself that he'd let someone break through the wall...for a moment.

He opens his eyes to look back at his equipment, glancing at his gun...his smile falls as his brow furrows and he lets out a grunt of disappointment at his own weakness - letting someone else in.
A shake of his head, he gets up from his place on the bench...sighing as he goes to return to his duties...taking just one last long look back, out of habit, over his shoulder to glance in her direction.

The slender figure in his sight gets smaller and smaller as she walks away back to the med bay…

He's disappointed but relieved that she's gone. Back to his solitude, he sighs as he looks back at his rifle. He gets to work and checks his weapon thoroughly...cleaning it and ensuring it's ready before slipping it back into it's holster.

In his own head he reflects on the interaction, unsure of how to deal with the lingering thoughts and feelings. " I should have been more friendly.. "

But maybe it’s the reason why she noticed him in the first place, he thought.

As he walks to the training center, he considers if he should buy her a cold drink back.

His thoughts remain stuck on that question...should he go get her a drink? He would like to try being nice again...

Mid training, About 8 am, he would make a decision and go over to the med room. Knocking on the door lightly, he'd wait for an answer before opening and going inside...with a little anxiety.

He notices the new medic he met earlier is sitting at her desk, writing something.

(Y/n) looks up at him with a smile

“Oh ? It’s you. Hey.”

She says as she puts down the pen

“How was your day ?”

König gives a soft nod and a smile at the greeting, walking in to the room and holding up a cola can. With a soft laugh he looks at himself, feeling a little silly...but it's a good thing to do, maybe.

" It ..it was ok "

Smiling some, he continues as he steps closer while still holding up the Coke.

" How was your day? I got you a cold can... "

She chuckles softly as she takes the can from him

“You didn’t have to buy me back..”

She pops the can and drinks it

“Thank you.” She smiles as she gestures him to the waiting couch over there, “Sit down, make yourself comfy.”

König nods at her thank you as he gets a little nervous at the sudden 'Sit down', but he does so at the gesture. He takes a seat on the couch but his eyes stay focused straight ahead, sitting up straight as he leans forwards, his arms folded and resting on his knees, watching the cola can being drank. He waits a little patiently to see what comes next, if anything. This is a strange position to be in.

She smiles as she lets out a refreshing noise after drinking the coke

“We haven’t introduced yet, right ? I’m (y/n), What’s your name ?”

A smile appears on his face as he's asked his name.

" I am König. That's ' King' "

He soft laughs, finding humor in himself.

" What is your role here? "

He glances over at her and the way she looks as she sits, curious to learn more about her, trying to look relaxed.

“I’m a nurse.” She smiles, “You know, I do first aids and stuff, I can also help operate a surgery too.”

He nods at her role, then his mind lights up with excitement at hearing about the training for surgery...

" Oh, interesting...did you go to medical school? Do you like what you do? "

His eyes look over the medic now with interest, leaning back and crossing his arms still over his knees. Curious now what she can do.

She chuckles

“Well, at first I got really scared of blood, I felt my whole body shaking when I have to practice with real human’s tissue…”

She shrugs

“But yeah, I got used to it. And now I can deal with it pretty well. What about you ? You seems like a tough soldier.”

She chuckles lightheartedly.

He nods along, understanding what she says and laughing in agreement over the fear of blood. He then pauses for a moment, thinking about her last question, letting out a sigh before responding.

" Tough is probably right. I don't have much else, no school, no friends...just the military. "

He softly laughs, not quite sure how he feels about admitting he's never had any other real life, but it's the truth of how things stood and he had little shame in sharing that fact, at least

" What about you? Friends? Family? "

(Y/n) looks away as she chuckles awkwardly

“Well, I don’t know if I should say this but um…”

“I have anxiety talking to people, I prefer to be on my own, so I moved out pretty early. I don’t quite get along with my family or any friends…”

She rubs the back of her neck slightly

“If it’s not about work or professional topic , I would stutter and start rambling about stuff if I talk to more than two people…”

She sighs as she covers her mouth

“Oh god, why did I say this…”

König chuckles softly at her mention of 'if I should say this' but stops to listen to her story, giving her his full attention as she speaks of her past. He nods along to it all, understanding and not judging any of her words.

" I know what you mean...I have anxiety talking to people too. And I've never really had any friends... So I feel that same way..like I have no one to talk to "

He says this with a sense of understanding and honesty, even feeling like he's already getting to know her a little better.

“Sometimes I want to talk to someone, but at the same time I think I should just shut up, or become a psycho and start talking to the wall.”

She chuckles as she rests her head back on her palm with a sigh

“To me, it’s not about having someone to talk anymore.”

König laughs lightly at the thought of her talking to a wall before his eyes grow serious, understanding the words. He nods at her and thinks on that. He looks at her and the way she sits on the couch as he speaks slowly, thinking on his words - something he doesn't normally do.

" I think you're right, actually...It's not really about having someone to talk to, it's about knowing that someone is listening to you. "

He shifts in his seat, realizing he said a little more than he expected to.

She chuckles as she hides her face in her palms

“Oh god… I can’t believe I’m sharing this much to anyone.”

She looks up at him with a smile

“Thank you for listening to me without judgement…”

He nods silently, a soft smile appearing on his face, feeling a sense of understanding for the first time in a long while...and then he notices his thoughts...how long it has been since he's just sat and talked to someone like this, just talking. And so, his mouth opens to say another word.

" Yes, of course...I would like to listen. I feel that too, it's hard to talk to someone about the difficult things without being judged, but you listened and understand as well. That is rare. "

As he glances to his watch on the wrist, he realizes that it’s time for him to come back to the training room. He’s a Colonel and it’s during the recruit season, he has a lot of training for them to be done.

König chuckles at the realization of the time passing...he's lost in his thoughts but also the conversation. He gets up, his height reaching over the sitting medic as he leans over in preparation of saying goodbye. He looks down at her, his mind wandering on what he might say next...

" Well...I need to get going, but...we can talk again later? "

He offers a smile at the proposition...

She looks up at his blue eyes, the only exposed part on his masked face.

“Of course… anytime, König.”

She smiles softly as she gives him a little wave

" Yes...anytime... "

He softly repeats, his eyes staying softly on her, studying her a bit more. His lips curl a little, smiling softly. He then holds up a hand for a soft shake. His palm open, he tilts it slightly towards her with his thumb up as he speaks.

" See you later, alright? "

As they shake hands, he can feel the softness from her hand. For a very long time, he hasn’t talk to any girls… or female, specifically.

“See you later.”, She smiles.

He lets go, his palm tingling a bit from her soft skin. Her hand felt nice in his...the same nice as the conversation did. His mind flutters a bit, trying to process what he's just experienced and his eyes look up at her, as if wanting or wishing there were more to be said or done...

His eyes remain on hers for a moment longer - then he breaks the gaze off, a little flustered as he shakes his head.

" I'll see you later. ", A small nod of the head and he turns towards the door.

——————————

As he makes his way to the training room, he can’t help but thinking he’s making a fool of himself.

“What, König ? You have feelings for that little medic you just met today ?! Unbelievable!”

But she is so beautiful though… She looks so delicate and soft…

He shakes his head, talking to his inner voice to fuck off.

He laughs quietly to the comment in his head, but then realizes that it's true. There's nothing wrong with that, right...? Maybe a little crush, or he's just attracted, that's normal....He shakes his head again, smiling at it all...

" No, of course not... "

With that, he puts it behind him, getting back to training the recruits, the memory of the conversation and her slowly beginning to melt away.

For now, anyway...

He continues with the day. Training the recruits with a lot of guns skills and hand to hand combat.

It’s really tiring when you have to carry the whole heavy gear while training, not to mention they also have to wear the mask the whole time, it’s a bit hard to breathe.

But things come to an end as the lunch time comes. Finally everyone can rest.

All the recruits laughing and being loud after getting dismissed, as they make their way out of the training room.

König , however, stays to do a last check on all the equipments in the room.

Looking at the recruits leave to go get lunch, he's a little jealous...of what they get to do. But he snaps himself back into reality.

He finishes up the check as quickly as he can, walking over to his belongings in the corner to grab his rifle, taking a moment to check that it's loaded and ready to go...then he heads out of the room. He's going to go grab lunch in the mess hall...

A pause, his mind working...he thinks of that small medic...

What is she doing right now ? Is she having lunch in the med room too ?

He thinks about how beautiful she is. How could she just sit there, and laugh, and be so beautiful? (Stole it for the plot☝️😔)

He loves the way that little medic is the complete opposite of him. She’s so soft, delicate and almost looks fragile in his eyes.

He sighs as he shakes his head. He should grab some lunch.

He walks over towards the mess hall and sees a few of the other soldiers sitting out in the yard with their lunch, talking, playing cards and the like...he goes in and grabs something to eat, something of a light lunch. He's not too hungry, but he doesn't want to go hungry. He makes sure he's got his rifle on him, always, and sits down alone at a table, looking around as he puts down his plate and begins to eat...

He does notice other men...a bit older perhaps. What the others call a vet.

What about this guy? Maybe he could use a friend...no harm in talking and listening...Konig nods to the guy, giving him space to speak first - but if nothing, he takes a moment to look around, taking in the surroundings.
The men in the yard seem content, enjoying themselves...one playing a harmonica, singing along in a soft tone. Konig looks back at the soldier sitting across the mess hall at his table...he smiles a bit, then nods to him.

" You been in this long? "

He speaks up.

The men seems to get along well with each other , as they all have a smile on their faces.

One of them speak up as they notice Konig

“Ah, yes, 15 years of serving. But hey, we heard about you. You’re not so bad yourself eh ? Colonel Konig ?”

The others laugh as they nod at König.

“We used to be ordered around when we were at your age. Good job young man.”

Konig's face turns in a slight blush, but he nods, a smile growing from within at the praise. He nods and holds up a thumb, laughing at the thought.

" Thanks. I do what I can, I'm trying to get these guys to be the best they can be...but, of course, no amount of training will get these guys ready for the front."

He pauses, then looks at the vet across and leans in a bit.

" I imagine you know all about that, then, huh...a couple of tours under your belt? " He says.

One of them chuckle playfully as he jerks his chin up at Konig

“Oh haha, not only that, but my eyes are very experienced too.”

He winks at the other men before looking back at Konig

“You seemed uh, thinking about a … junges Mädchen , maybe ?”

His face heats up just a bit at the joke, but he laughs along with the men as well.

" Haha, maybe you are a true veteran! Lots of time outside with the enemy...I'm sure you are well versed in both killing and flirting. "

The men around him laugh, Konig joining in with a chuckle.

After it dies down, he nods at the man with a smile.

" Ja...that little medic, I've been thinking about her. "

One of the men chuckles

“To be honest, it’s your eyes that said everything. You zoned out , then suddenly chuckled like a stupid teenage boy. You didn’t think we notice that while you were eating, huh ?”

The other men laugh as they slap that man’s back

“That new medic, right ? Is it (Y/n)? Yeah, she seems like such a soft flower though. She doesn’t speak much to anyone.”

Konig looks around to all the guys, laughing along with them and shaking his head a bit at himself, all while his face flushes brighter with embarrassment.

" I can't help it, you guys! I've had nothing to think about out there but these walls and this job...so of course I'd fall for the first pretty girl that walks by! "

Little did they know, she was the one who approached him at the first place. And she even shared about her story with him.

He laughs along with them all, leaning back and crossing his arm over his chest and taking the joke in stride. He then looks at them again with a smile.

" You guys have any tips for me? "

The oldest guy of the group sips on his beer, then speaks up.

“Well, did you talk to her ?”

Konig thinks on that for a moment, then shakes his head a little.

" No...not much. We talked about the training and our pasts. She seems shy and I just met her, so...I'm trying to figure her out. "

He looks at them and gives them a quick smile.

" Have you talked to her? "

As he says this, a small idea enters his mind, a smile crossing his face at the idea. He laughs and shakes his head.

" Oh, you probably know her already, huh, old vet? " He says.

The man chuckles

“Not like you think. She seemed a bit scared when she first came to the base, so I tried to look out for her. I had a daughter her age.”

Another man says to Konig

“Ptf, if you like her, just go ask her out. I ain’t see no one is a Colonel and has no balls.”

Konig's eyes light up at that - his smile broadening before he nods and starts thinking out loud.

" You're right...there's no harm in asking, right? Just some coffee or something. "

He says a bit excitedly, thinking of all of the possibilities.

He smiles at the old vet and the other guys.

" Thank you. I am going to go ask her out, wish me luck! "

After König left, they just continue laughing and talking to each other …

——————————

König leaves the mess hall and walks out of the building to head towards the med bay where he thinks the little medic, (y/n), might be. He tries not to think too much about what to say as he walks, taking a deep breath as he makes his way down the hall.

He arrives and peeks his head in the door, his heart beating a tiny bit faster.

" Y/n ? "

His voice is soft but sure...then he nods to himself, a little more sure now.

" Are you busy? We could get coffee if you'd like? "

As he opens the door, the familiar scent of germicide hits him, as he looks at the little medic he was calling. Now bending her upper part down on her desk to sleep. Her back heaves up and down softly, what a sight.

He smirks at the sight of the little medic, asleep it seems, her back rising and falling softly and her hair down...it's adorable. He walks a little closer, his hands in his pockets as he looks on, not wanting to disturb her but taking in the whole image of the scene.

" Y/n? You okay? "

He nudges her a little bit, his voice soft and quiet, hoping this conversation will be easy like the last time he spoke to her...

She slowly opens her eyes, still half asleep as she mutters

“Mom ? I want some sandwich…”

She yawns as she leans closer to his touches’s warmth. As she starts burying her face in her arms again.

Konig chuckles a little at the adorable sleepy scene, his voice still soft as he reaches over and nudges her a bit more.

" Not your mother, silly. Did you sleep well? "

He asks, wondering if she had some time to rest today at all. He smirks a little bit as well, thinking her sleepy face cute as she buries her head in her arm.

She slowly looks up at him, it takes her a minute to process as she rubs her eyes.

“Oh.. I’m sorry.. I ..uh.. don’t tell this to my supervisor..”

He laughs a little, shaking his head.

" Don't worry, I won't tell. It's just us. "

He takes a step closer, looking down at her with a soft smile.

" I take it this means that you have a minute for...coffee? "

He offers again, his voice soft and the words slow, as if trying to convey that he's serious but understanding if she's not in a position or the mood to go now. “Scheiße.” He thinks to himself. “Coffee ? Seriously? Why can’t I come up with any word better than that.”…..

He looks down nervously at the little medic as she stands up and stretches her back. She nods with a smile

“I’m hungry also. You came at the right time.”
She speaks softly in her sleepy voice.

Konig's smile grows wider, and he gives her his free hand as he turns, looking towards the door then back to her, his face a soft smile.

" Shall we? "

He's enjoying himself...she didn't say yes or no to the coffee part but she did mention the wanting to eat, so he'll just chalk it up to a win. He walks out of the med room, waiting for her to catch up and then walks down the hall with her. Once she's next to him, he speaks again.

" Do you have a place in mind already? "

He sees her face lights up a little as she smiles and looks at him

“Do you like Vietnamese cuisine? I know a place that makes really good Pho.” (🍜🍜)

His eyes light up at her recommendation and he nods a lot, a little too excited at the idea maybe...

" Of course! How could I refuse the recommendation of our most beautiful medic? "

He smirks as he says the last part and gives her a wink.

" Let's do it. "

He offers his hand to her, the other arm being tied up by his rifle. A little awkward but he gives her a smile.

" Lead the way, Miss. "

He can do it, right ? He can be a gentleman too.

She smiles happily when he tells her that’s she’s beautiful.

The two of them walk out of the base to that small restaurant nearby. As the food is served, she claps her hands a little, seems to be excited.

“Let’s dig in !”

She smiles as she starts eating, making happy sounds.

He smiles at her enthusiasm and claps softly with her, laughing a little bit. It’s a bit childish but okay.

" Yes, let's eat. "

He says with a smile as he sits down, the smell of the food hitting his nose and instantly making him hangry.

Taking a seat, he sets his rifle down carefully near him but in a safe place before grabbing a set of silverware. He takes a moment to look at the food and give a thankful nod to the server, waiting for her to follow suit before he starts eating as well.

The server accidentally left a weird eyes as they walked away at his rifle. Seriously? A Giant masked man with guns.

He feels like a terrorist, fuck, it’s so hard to be a gentleman in front of her.

Luckily, she’s too hungry to notice his awkward moment.

She looks at him with smiley eyes as she eating a mouthful of food. She looks so happy. That makes him think this little medic is easy to please just by giving her food.

She really looks happy though, even makes a little satisfied noise after taking a big spoon.

He looks at her with a soft smile the entire time she eats, his smile growing a bit bigger when she makes those noises. It's really cute, and he's definitely feeling content right now knowing the little medic is enjoying herself.

He finishes off a few bites worth and speaks up from their little eating party.

" So, where are you from? How did you come to join this...very, unique...military unit? "

He asks, smiling, his tone soft and conversational.

“I’m from France. I got transferred here after doing some special surgeries, beside, this unit pays me higher than anywhere else so I thought, why not ?”

She burps as she pats on her little belly in satisfaction

“Sorry.”

She giggles.

Konig's face lights up at her answer. So she's from France? That's cool.

He chuckles a little bit at her burp, her smile and the laugh that follows it really getting to him. He shakes his head and smiles.

" That's quite alright...and you're right. The money is better here. What's the worst that can possibly happen to us? "

He adds with a chuckle, his eyes sparkling a little as he thinks about working with the little medic as his teammate...well....that and the occasional skirmish of his thoughts.

“Thank you for spending time with me . I don’t know why I always do some embarrassing stuff when I’m with you. Maybe it’s because there is something about you that is quite comfortable… aha..”

She giggles sheepishly as she rubs her neck slightly.

Konig's face lights up at her kind remarks and he smiles a lot, taking in her blushing face and shy, soft smile.

" Well, it's not something you need to worry about. I won't ever mind you being comfortable...being yourself, or anything like that. In fact, I really like it. "

He blushes a little as he says that, looking away for a moment and trying to hide it, then takes a bite of the food. He's enjoying himself right now, feeling very content and happy with her in his company.

———————————

After a relaxing lunch, the pair split, each returning to their areas of duty. Konig arrives back at the training room and grabs his rifle, taking a second to look over at the other recruits. He looks a bit more energized than usual, a little more chatty perhaps, but not overly so. He stands at the back of the room, ready for any order or command.

He's been enjoying himself. Not many people can make him smile as much as the little medic and he's been thinking about her quite a bit in these past few hours...maybe he'll get to see her more often...

———————————

As time went by, and the sun starts to set, It’s time to end the day.

Konig shouts at the recruits : “DISMISSED.”

Everyone salutes him and shouts back :”Yes, Sir.” As they start to get out of the training room.

He starts walking towards his quarters, a warm feeling in his chest. Today was a good day, he thinks, the smile on his face just getting bigger. He starts to think about all the fake scenarios between them that he made as well, smiling a little bit to himself.

He arrives at his quarters and starts getting undressed from his gear and his mask....he takes a second to look at himself in the mirror. He's not a terribly handsome man, not a model, but not entirely unattractive either. He's not too bad... Although the scars sometimes make him feel a bit insecure.

She hasn’t seen him without a mask yet… what would she think when she see the real him ?

He takes off the rest of his mask and boots...now all he needs is a shower.

He pulls off his shirt, revealing his athletic and toned body. He sighs happily, finally out of the gear. He steps into the shower and takes a deep breath, letting the hot water blast his body. He spends a bit more time just thinking on the day, the little medic, everything...it was nice, a day to remember. He had a great time and the thought of her makes him really happy.

He finishes up his shower and steps out, drying off and putting on a pair of shorts. He grabs a clean shirt , and putting that on as well.

After putting on some comfy clothes, he throws himself on the bed with a long sigh, as he finally can get some rest.

Konig climbs into bed and looks up at the ceiling, a warm smile on his face. He's thinking about the little medic, how cute she was today, how she made that face when he said that thing...

He sighs happily and closes his eyes. Tomorrow would be another day, he thinks, but that doesn't matter, not right now...

He starts trying to take a nap, his mind racing a little bit and filled with thoughts of the little medic. His eyes roll to the side a bit, and he smiles a little more.
(He’s so bbg 😔🍄✨)

He hugs a pillow, pretends that it was y/n. He can’t imagine how soft she would feel like to hug her, bringing her in his embrace.

His breath comes a little bit faster, his chest rising and falling a little more as he hugs the pillow.

He smiles and starts to drift off to sleep, his warm thoughts leading his mind to a place of comfort and safety, a place of peace he seldom visits.
