Chapter 1: 31st day of the Wildflower Moon, 1023

Chapter Text

Dear Hero,

I hope my little taskforce was able to locate you with haste. I sent them to Ordon to look for you, but it has been a month since you left for your home and you could be anywhere in the kingdom by now. Hopefully my messengers are blending in. They are actually the younger sons and daughters of my nobles, if you couldn’t tell. Their job at court was to look pretty and get married so as to strengthen the position of their family and decide the path they intend to walk in life. Unfortunately, due to the destruction of the castle and the lack of parties I am willing to fund, these nobles found themselves quite bored. They started to get underfoot of the construction workers and townsfolk, and their parents all happen to be absent tending to problems within their own estates, leaving me with their care.

Luckily a few inquiries revealed a thirst for adventure in many of them that their families never allowed to grow. The desire to travel and adventure was encouraged by the rumors of the certain deeds of a certain hero. For the moment, they are acting as my personal courier service. Perhaps in treading the land they will learn to love Hyrule for her people and beauty, not her riches alone, and become a kinder noble class than the one I must currently contend with. I also alluded to your importance and role during the war, just enough to let them know that this isn’t some treasonous errand of the Queen, revealing kingdom secrets to random goatherds, and they do not need to inform their families and begin a second uprising this year. Do not fret over what I told them, it is the story we agreed upon, and feel free to tell them you refuse to answer any questions you do not wish answer. If you do not wish to answer any questions at all, they have been carefully instructed to heed that command.

I am rambling, I apologize. The truth is that I am so frustrated with my court and the task of undoing the rulings of my father that I am rather close to acting unseemly. A few more days and my frustrations might even well into tears. However, a princess never cries, and if there was even a hint in the castle of my weakness, my court would exploit it and try to take my crown faster than a wolf on a rabbit. I am sure you are quite familiar with that imagery. This letter is an attempt for an outlet, I suppose, from all the pressure of having the fate of the kingdom on my shoulders. You are the unfortunate recipient of this outlet as the only other person I know who has experienced this unique burden. That being said, I know that even requesting your correspondence is an interruption to the peaceful life you deserve and I will not ask for a reply contrary to your will. If you wish to have no further contact with me, simply write it in a return note. No explanation, no regrets for my feelings, and I will leave Ordon and its hero alone except concerning matters of state. I can look elsewhere for an outlet, do not fret. The couriers are instructed to make themselves scarce, but available to ferry your response back to me.

I hope you are doing well, Hero. I will admit that another hope I have for this correspondence is for me to discover more about you personally, you who has traveled the breadth and depth of my kingdom. Tell me about it, please. What were your thoughts under the blanket of the stars as you traveled? What do you miss most about taking the shape of night’s deadliest predators? What do you think about Hyrule’s roads and trade? Most of all, I wish to learn more about Hyrule’s people. Hopefully if you have read this far you are somewhat considering beginning this correspondence, and if you will indulge me, please write back telling me about at least one acquaintance of yours in each letter, everything that you know about them.

With myself as the only undisputed member of the royal family in line to inherit, I cannot leave Castletown as often as I wish. Please indulge this desire of

mine and allow me to understand at least one more person with each letter,to understand them as you know them, since I can not know them by myself. Thank you for reading this far and I look forward to your response, whatever it may be.

Sincerely,

Your Princess
