Work Text:

Kylo slowly opened his eyes, staring at the space above the Exegol temple. His ears were ringing as he felt the ground shake underneath him. The last thing he remembered was healing Rey after she had killed Palpatine. He didn’t regret it, but felt a hit of anger that she had left him here to die. At this point in his life he wasn’t surprised, and after everything he found himself to not care.

He watched dazed as X-Wings flew overhead while Star Destroyers plummeted into the planet's surface. He didn’t even register the Tie Fighter that landed next to him, dust and small rocks blowing over his body.

Looking over he noticed a blurry silhouette walking over to him. He was in too much pain to defend himself and hope whoever this was would make it quick. Some sick part of himself made him think it was the Hux of all people. The outline of his face and hair, a black greycoat draping softly over his body. He had felt Hux die, ordering Pryde to kill the spy while he was off to find Rey. It wasn’t much of a surprise that Hux was the spy with everything he had done, but if he had just had more time, he could have, well he doesn’t know what he could have done to salvage their relationship.

Kylo groaned in pain as the person started dragging him over to the Tie, aggressively shoving him into the cockpit. He didn’t know how the person did it, with him being dead weight, but the person was cursing in his native tongue so he presumed it was a lot on them. Not that Kylo had any ounce of care left in him.

He drifted for a bit while the person got to work flipping controls and injecting something into him, making him wince. They were saying something to him, but his mind became funny and his eyes slipped shut.

He jolted back into consciousness as he felt the Tie startup as it ascended into space. The last thing he sees in Exegol become smaller before he finally lets himself drift off into darkness.

He was warm. Not uncomfortably so, but it was like his body and mind were numb with the only recurring thought being alive and safe. Trying to move a bit, he felt he had no control over his limbs, only able to open his eyes slowly gazing upon a loth cat. The strange animal stared at him expectantly. There was something familiar about the animal and Kylo tried to remember. Then he smiled, how could he forget.

“Hey Millie.” He said, throat too dry to really speak. Of course the little rascal would want to cuddle with him. She had always loved to lay on his chest when he got back to their…..to their.

Wait

Millie

Millie was on him. In a house he had never seen. He was on a couch he had never laid on. Millie was alive. Hux was-

“Hux.” he called out, more like a gasp. He tried sitting up, only still his body not to comply. Millie jumped off of him, running over to a chair that was sitting across from the couch. A chair that held the only thing he had ever loved.

Hux

“I thought you were dead.” He said, slurring a bit as he used all his strength to turn his face to the man. “How do you know that you aren't?” Hux responded, which was something Hux would have responded with no matter the situation. He did not feel any pain, and he was pretty sure he had broken a few ribs, but all he felt was the heavy weight on his mind and body.

“I don’t know what’s real or not.” He said, sounding in awe of himself. What if he was dead? What if Hux was just a figment of his imagination. What if this was real and Hux had saved him. He calmed his heart down a bit when he saw Hux smile slightly, moving to take a drag from his cigarette. “That’s because I pumped you with more than the recommended amount of painkillers. You force users have always had the ability to handle more, right? Or at least that’s what I remember.” Hux took another drag. “You were just a heap on the ground in that wretched place. You’re lucky I found you when I did.”

“Why?” is all Kylo can respond with. Hux had brought him back and for what. The war was over, the First Order had fallen. Why risk his life to come back for Kylo. Why bring him here when the Sca-Rey hadn’t given him a second thought. Why come back to him after everything?

Hux stood up silently, extinguishing his cigarette and moving over to where Kylo's body laid still on the couch. The look Hux gave him made something stir in his chest. It wasn’t pity, but it wasn't regret ethier. Something middleground of those emotions that described their relationship perfectly. “That is the question isn’t it? Why do all of this after everything you did to me. Why did I risk my life for you and you don’t even appreciate it? Why do I remember the good times we had together when clearly I should be remembering the bad. Why did you hurt me when I told you how they had hurt me and why did I keep coming back? Wh-why do I still love you?”

There it was, all laid out for kylo to hear. He was surprised that Hux even had it in him. He knew Hux wouldn’t have wanted an apology, Kylo was already too far gone for that. All he could think to say was what he had wanted to say the moment he saw him and knew he was alive. “I love you too.” Hux turned to him and physically deflated, holding his once General position to now a man, just a man who had lost everything and yet still has kylo.

Hux didn’t say anything more, only breathing out a shaky sigh as he sat down in the chair, lighting another cigarette. Kylo was smart enough to not say anything more and to let Hux have this peace. They both knew when the drugs left his system they would need to have another talk, but for now Kylo let him have the last word. With that, he felt safe enough to drift back to sleep, letting the person he loved most in the galaxy look over him once more.
