Chapter 1: Myths and Legends

Chapter Text

Cynthia had always thought Wallace was great, in fact that is an understatement. Cynthia thinks he's amazing, the fact that he was once a Gym Leader, then he became one of Hoenn's standing Champions, a well known coordinator around the world, and still doing his duties as the Guardian of the Cave of Origin at Sootopolis, all while being the legal guardian of his niece. He was doing a lot of things Cynthia herself never thought she could do. It was already hard enough trying to find the time for her research, as she's always burdened by her own Champion duties and League responsibilities, but Wallace makes it seem like a piece of cake.

She really did envy him. But she's too prideful to ever say that out loud, and to actually admit to it. And so she's there, in Diantha's living room, playing the game Iris had shown her yesterday, going on how it's one of the best games she played, to no surprise it's an fps game. Though, amidst the sound of cybernetic gunshots from the game, she could hear a conversation going from the kitchen.

"And so, Kyogre created the vast seas and Groudon created the lands," she heard Wallace say from the other room, seems he's giving a lesson to Hau and Iris, or Leon. "Rayquaza became the guardian of the skies, watching over Hoenn, making sure nothing gets past him to ruin the region," he said, voice clear and confident with his knowledge. "My family had been guardians of Sootopolis for generations, guardian of the Cave of Origin, the home of Kyogre," she could hear him laugh, "of course, I was the best guardian. My parents weren't, and I had the upper hand with that at least."

Cynthia then heard someone praise him, it sounded like Iris. "Wow," she heard the young champion say, "that's so cool! You sound like my grandpa Drayden, he's like, the guardian of the DNA Splicers," she then hummed, "that was, of course, before he gave it to Nate. Everyone was really amazed by my grandpa. I wish I could live up to that too."

"I see, well your grandfather was already a well known man in Unova, yes? And he still is, I'm sure you're also making him proud by being a future Dragon Master," Wallace said, and she knows he's smiling at Iris. "You're even making Lance proud."

"Well... I dunno about that," She laughed sheepishly, "considering that Hau and I make him age twice as fast with our shenanigans."

Wallace chuckled too, "fret not, darling, Lance may not seem like it, but he does have a soft spot for you and Hau."

"Really?"

"Of course."

"Ah, we're getting sidetracked! Sorry!" Iris said in a panicky tone, "well, what about Rayquaza? It's a Dragon type, and y'know how I can get with Dragon types," Cynthia could just feel Iris grin at that. "Is it like Zekrom or Reshiram?"

Wallace hummed, "in a sense, yes," then she heard him tapping the table, "they're Dragons, and they do represent something, from this book I read, they were described as the Draconic Guardians of the Earth." He said, and Cynthia's heart skipped a beat.

The Draconic Guardians, that's what she called the legendary Dragon type Pokemon in the books she had written.

"And I couldn't agree more," He added, "though I'm curious what the author would call the other legendary beings guarding our world, seeing as not all of them are Dragons."

"I'm sure the author will think of something!" Iris beamed, "oh, but I gotta go, thanks for that, Wallace! But Lance is probably looking for me now."

"Ah, yes, he did promise to train you and Hau today, didn't he. You go now, darling," He said, and Iris thanked him once more before rushing out the kitchen.

The young Unova Champion bade Cynthia goodbye as well, telling her to enjoy the game she's playing. Once she left, Wallace was there approaching Cynthia.

"It was a good book," He said to her, a small smile on his face, "though Kyogre's part needs a bit of work," She scoffed at that, "and you better give him a good title too. Water types deserve the best as well," And he placed his hand on his chest, smirking, "that's why I use them."

Rolling her eye, she turned her attention back to the game, "yeah, I'll give him the title of 'Champion Wallace's Favourite' that'll certainly catch someone's eye," she laughed sardonically, but deep within her, she is happy; she's glad one of her friends had read her books, that they liked it. It was a nice feeling, having her efforts pay off, and to hear it was great from an actual Guardian like Wallace? Well... Cynthia could jump in joy, but that'd be caving in, and she doesn't like losing.

She could feel Wallace roll his eyes too, and he waved his hand dismissively, then he started walking upstairs.

"Wait." Cynthia called, pausing her game. Looking at him, he was raising a brow, a smirk on his face. Arc, she fucking hates that look. But she wanted to say " thank you " just a small thanks for reading her book, for putting in the time and effort to finish it, for thinking it's great. But damn, she hates that look. Growling to herself, she bit her lip, "nevermind, it's nothing." Then she started her game again.

Hearing Wallace chuckle, he spoke, "don't worry, Cynthia darling, I left a good review." Then he finally left.

Cynthia tried to fight back a smile, but the thought of someone close to her liking her book really made her day, and she went on to continue her game. She's sure she'll think of a good title for Kyogre soon.

Chapter 2: Café Soleil

Notes:

this one, this fucking one broke me, and ik its probs not well written but their dynamic is just sooooo *hand gestures* for me

Chapter Text

Café Soleil was miraculously empty today, but Diantha had to be grateful for that, she can eat cake in peace. Although still in her disguise, she'd rather not take any chances or risks, as much as she loves her fans, she'd love some time for herself every once in a while. Plus, the quietness was nice, it was welcome, it had been a hectic week for her, having too many parts to play as both Champion and actress, oftentimes she thinks of retiring one for the other, but she'd always decide against it. Those two are equally important to her.

Sighing to herself, she took a bite of her red velvet cake, and she hummed as the cake melted in her mouth. All was well for Diantha, everything was peaceful, and she had cake! Until, of course...

"Ah, so this is the ever famous Café Soleil, huh?" A voice, loud and obnoxious, Arc she just knows who that is. Looking up from her cake, she saw none other than the Galar Champion himself, also in his disguise. His hair tied up to a messy bun, his signature cap nowhere in sight, replaced by a pair of sunglasses, he's wearing joggers and a sleeveless hoodie. Then again, not like she's any better, as she's just wearing her black peacoat with her hair free from being braided around her head. He then locked eyes with her and grinned, "Dee! Never thought I'd see you here, great, least someone who's already familiar with the menu," he chuckled and he took a seat in front of her. That nickname, she rolled her eyes at it, of course all the Champions had secret nicknames for each other when they're out in their disguises, unfortunately for her, her own nickname was so similar to Leon's.

"Yes, nice to see you too, Lee." She managed to hiss out with a smile.

He chuckled and his grin grew wider, almost smirking at her, "seems you're not too happy I'm here, Dee." came his mocking voice, low enough for the other occupants to not hear.

"Oh, I'm just surprised you didn't lose your way," she shot back with her own mocking smirk. "A shame, and I was about to celebrate too."

"Well, cake's always better with friends, don't you think?" He glanced towards her plate and called for the waiter, asking for something similar to what Diantha had ordered, and he gave his thanks when the waiter acknowledged him. "Nice place, I can see why you like it here."

Shaking her head, she feigned, "now you ruined it, how cruel."

He laughed, low and deep, "well, where would be the fun in just letting you enjoy things?"

"I knew I should've fed you to the Houndooms."

"Yeah, right."

And soon his order arrived, and he thanked the waiter once more. Grabbing the utensils, he ate happily as he hummed in delight at the flavour of the cake melting in his mouth too. "Man, I can see why you like this," he grinned, mouth still full of cake.

"Do you not know any manners?" Came her exasperated voice, and in a low tone, "and you're considered a Champion. Shameful."

"Hey, don't you think I'm also allowed to be like this every once in a while?" he said, but he didn't look at her, too busy with his cake. "Plus, you're one to talk, as if you didn't roll around the mud with your Goodra."

Scoffing, she looked to the side, face flushed, "that didn't happen."

He laughed, "sure, whatever helps you sleep at night."

And after that they ate in silence, a few people entered the café, some stayed and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, while some just ordered a to-go coffee. Speaking of, Diantha hadn't had coffee just yet. She motioned for the server and asked for her usual order, a cappuccino with extra bits of chocolate, and she also asked for a latté with extra milk. It was Leon's preference.

"Aw, going soft on me now, Dee?" He teased, taking another bite of his cake. "That's sweet," he chuckled at his own pun.

"You have to pay me for it when we get home," she smiled.

He then tapped his chin in thought, then said, "nah."

And silence once again, the two of them enjoying their coffee as they listened to the conversations of the other patrons. Some were talking about seeing the Galar Champion around Aquacorde, some were talking about trying the Gym Challenge, young trainers were also talking about the League, dreaming that one day they'll defeat Diantha and soon enough take on the World Tournament too. She wonders if that day will ever come, to be bested by young trainers and for her to finally step down her throne as Champion. If that day ever comes, what would she even feel? She then glanced towards Leon, downing the cake with coffee, and she wondered: what about him? What does he feel about the thought of losing? As much as she hated to admit, he was a tough opponent, although his hubris will most definitely be his downfall. Then another thought came in mind, did he even want to be champion for this long? She surely didn't, and she's sure Cynthia doesn't too, but what about him? Does he ever stay up late in the night, thinking of all the trainers that could beat him? All those capable trainers who were stopped because of Rose's interference.

Rose is long gone now though, behind bars as he should be, Leon's main sponsor now down in the dumps. Good riddance. That recent tournament left a bitter taste for them. They knew they both deserved better.

Leon took a quick glance at her, noting she was deep in thought. Eyes on her own coffee, both hands gripping the mug tight. Her left hand was as steady as ever, probably had the tighter grip, her right hand however was tapping on the ceramic. Twitching here and there, restless, then she started tapping the table. He had heard what happened to her right arm, heard it from the other champions, just hidden beneath the fabric of her coat was an acid burn forever tainting her skin, damaging not only her skin but also her nerves. And he knows, from the hushed conversations of Lance and Geeta, during the late hours of the night, that the acid burn on her arm isn't the only burn scar on her body. The thought sent a shiver down his spine.

"Are you not done yet?" her voice broke him from his thoughts, "I still have to get the others cake as well, or should I leave you here and watch as you get lost trying to get back to the manor." she deadpanned, eyes half lidded, then she chuckled to herself, "now that would probably make my day better."

He scoffed with a smirk, "oh please, you can't live without me."

"I'd honestly kill myself if I spend more than a month with you."

"Oh? Well, might as well extend my stay with you then, a well deserved break with my best champion friend." He gave her a toothy grin, sipping the last drop of his coffee.

"I should've poisoned your drink."

"You're so unoriginal, I poisoned your pancakes first ."

She laughed at that, "and still you fail to kill me. How embarrassing ."

Leon huffed, "not my fault your cooking made you immune to poison."

"My cooking is great."

"I'm pretty sure you're also adding poison to the food you make. It's inedible." He quipped.

Sighing with a scoff, she stood up, taking her handbag with her, and she went to the counter.

Leon spared her a quick glance, watching her order a whole cake, chocolate this time, almost everyone's favourite. He stood up, following suit, walking towards her and stood on her right side, watching her dig through her wallet for payment. He watched her right hand trembling, not as much as before, but for him it's still noticeable, and finally she got the money. He looked at the counter. The clerk behind it already had the cake packed in the box, and he took it, making sure the cake wouldn't get ruined within the box.

Diantha looked at him with a raised brow, then she rolled her eyes as she paid. "If you think you can get a piece of that later, you are wrong. That's for the others, we already had our share."

He let out a faux gasp, hand on his chest, "why, do you honestly think I'd stoop that low?"

"Yes."

"How rude," he feigned with a laugh, "this is just my way of saying thank you for buying me coffee."

"Really?" She drew out, taking the change, and she finally turned to him, "and not some sort of ruse to get me to give you a piece?"

He grinned, "nah."

" Bullshit. "

"Language!" He sang, laughing as he did, skipping along as they went out of the café. As they walked along the pavement, he looked at her, "so I don't have to pay for the coffee, right?"

"Shut up." She snapped, to which he just chuckled. "That was fifty pokedollars, and I know you have enough money in your pockets to buy ten of those."

"Aw, but," he gave her his best Rockruff eyes, "I'm too cute to pay for stuff, y'know."

"You look hideous, stop looking at me like that."

"As if you don't look like shit without makeup too." He shot back with his own smirk.

"Arceus, whatever did my past life do to receive this sort of karma?" She looked up at the sky, exasperated, then she glanced towards him, "how cruel it is to be stuck with you."

"I'm sure it's a blessing," he grinned, and somehow it became more and more genuine as he saw, even for a split second, how Diantha looked at him fondly.

"Whatever, let's just go home, you dolt." And she strut forward, hiding the smile on her face, she can't let him see it, he'll never let her live it down.

"Yeah," he breathed out, following behind her, "let's go home . "

Chapter 3: Orrecraft

Chapter Text

It's another champions meet up, this time the venue's at Hoenn, Steven had been generous in letting them stay at his home in Mossdeep, although it's cramped, they were happy to be with him. Unfortunately, Iris wasn't with them for this champions meet up, she said she had to watch over Opelucid's Gym and take care of her grandfather, as Drayden caught a cold yesterday, unable to do his duties as mayor and Gym Leader. That alone almost made Hau not to go to Hoenn too, but in their conversations Iris insisted he'd still go, she's sure he can find someone to be with him; there's Diantha of course, the Kalos Champion is always there for them, and by extension Geeta would be there for him too, maybe even Lance. But that didn't happen, he thinks maybe they'd have something else to do.

So here he was, in Steven's living room, sitting on the floor as he placed his laptop, a gift from Diantha for his birthday last year, on the table in front of the television. He turned it on, smiling at the sight of his wallpaper. It was a picture of him and his friends and family in Alola along with the other champions, that was such a great time, everyone he loved was there with him. He then eyed the apps he had installed, he had a few games in it, just enough so he won't get that bored, and he clicked on the icon showing a green cube.

Orrecraft was a game he and Iris really loved playing together. It was nice and peaceful and they could create anything they wanted. They even created their own region which they lovingly called “Alto.” Alto was still missing a few cities and towns though, they still haven’t made a Victory Road yet, even the League itself is still missing. So, leaving a message to Iris, he went to work, he began working on the city of the seventh gym, a city they named Nenriki, the Gym Leader in this city specializes in Psychic Types, and the badge is called Celestial Badge. Hau was proud of himself and Iris for all the world building they did, literally too, it's nice being able to create with no bounds, as he placed block after block, one on top of the other, then glass panes, then fences, then he spawned in a few Skitties, Audinos, and even Espurrs. He loved the freedom he had in this game, it's one of the things he thoroughly enjoyed, although as much as  loved playing with Iris he wasn't fond of the survival mode, something she clearly loved.

Perhaps it was the thrill of it, or maybe it's the fact that getting the items you needed felt more rewarding once you beat the mobs and bosses, but Hau should've expected that from someone who also loves first person shooter games.

Taking out his Room phone, he opened up his photos, scrolling down to find the picture Iris had sent him, the layout of the seventh gym. She wrote in what blocks he had to use, with a majority of them being quartz blocks, smooth alabaster befitting the elegant aura of the Nenriki Gym Leader. Iris always had an eye for exterior design, it's one of the few things he's so amazed at by her, she's so amazing! And now he should do her design justice as well, he'd rather not disappoint her for a crappy job at building the gym. So he began with the flooring, twelve by ten, that's probably enough, and soon the frames of the gym. He went on, looking at his phone once in a while for a guide, until he finally got to the roof of the gym. Now that the exterior was done, time for the interior. Iris didn't have him any guides for the interior of the gym, he's actually the one to make those, she said she isn't good with all the details needed in the gym, as she'd often just say something along the lines of Opelucid's Gym theme.

Hau liked designing the interiors of the gyms though, it's the fact that he also wanted Alola to have some sort of gym challenge as well, but he's also pretty content and happy with the Island Challenges.

So he visualized what he wanted the gym to look like. Purple and gold were the primary colour themes of the gym, and Hau decided to add in bits of pink and red too. They had this idea that the Fire Elite Four member and the Neriki Gym Leader are friends, and in their own respective chambers they have something to remind them of the other. So he began to work on it, adding bookshelves, a few enchantment tables, even some lamps. Dangling from the ceiling, he tried to create a chandelier, he fought the urge to not just spawn in a Litwick, as this was a Psychic gym, not a Ghost one. Going through his inventory, he added in more purple clay and some birch wood, then finally some yellow clay and even gold blocks. Too busy with the task at hand, he didn't even notice Steven sitting behind him on the couch, watching him work.

Few more minutes later, he's finally done with the interior of the gym. Letting out a satisfied huff, he looked around one last time to see if there's anything more he can add or fix.

"I think you can add a little bit more rubies there." Steven's voice echoed, causing Hau to jolt in surprise. The young Alola champion turned quick, eyes wide in surprise. The Devon heir chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly, "oh, I'm sorry, Hau," he sweatdropped, "I just thought that since you and Iris planned to add some red accent, I'm sure the rubies would do just fine."

"How did you—" although he was cut off when Steven motioned to his phone lying on the table, the plan for the gym and even Iris' notes on it wide open for him to see. "Oh…" he muttered to himself, feeling embarrassed, his face flushed. "Yeah," stuttering out, he looked for the rubies and frames in his inventory, "rubies would look great here. Thank you, Steven." He smiled at the older champions, to which he nodded in return with his own gentle smile.

"My pleasure," he said, then he eyed the game, "although, may I ask, what game is that? I never saw that being suggested during our game nights."

"Oh, it's Orrecraft!" Came his enthused response, he always liked sharing about the things he liked, "Iris showed it to me when we first met, and since then we've been playing it together! Cynthia also joins in sometimes, but those two really like the survival game mode and I don't so yeah… but it's still fun playing with them!"

"I see. Is that the only place I can play that too?"

Feeling the excitement rush to him, Hau leaned close, "you wanna play this too?"

"Sure, it looks fun! Plus, there are rare stones in that game, I wanna see what else it has to offer me." He then took out his own phone, "I can download that here right?" He pointed at the phone in his hand, "it would be great to get to play that when I'm at work. I don't always bring my laptop with me."

"Yeah, you can," Hau said, taking the phone from him and began installing the game.

"You said something about survival mode?" Steven asked, "what about the game mode you're playing?"

"It's creative, which means the Pokemon won't attack you and you can have every item in your inventory." He rambled on, "it's nice since I don't have to fight a lot of stuff to get the items I want, and you can fly too!" Then he double tapped the space bar, his own character in game hovering in the air.

"That's amazing," Steven breathed out, "so it makes it easier to build whatever you want from a Taillow's eye view! I get it!"

"Yeah! It's really cool!"

"Well, I might just join you soon," he chuckled, ruffling Hau's hair, "I'm not like Cynthia, I'd rather build whatever I want and explore without getting my character hurt. So I might join you in just playing on creative."

With a newfound excitement in his eyes, Hau nodded, "that'd be so great! I can even give you maps with caves and—"

"Caves? You mean there are actual caves in this game?" The Hoenn champion now's the one leaning close, "caves where I can find those rare stones?"

"Yeah, if you get lucky the map you'll spawn in has a huge cave for exploring and resources, but there are also some seeds and codes for it," Hau said, now giving Steven back his phone, the game finally installed on it.

"This is exciting, I can't wait to find out all the rare stones and gems in this game," he grinned, starting up Orrecraft in his own phone. "You have to guide me though, I'm still unfamiliar with the controls and the gameplay."

"Yeah, I will," and so he stood up from where he was on the floor to sit next to Steven on the couch. Telling him the basic controls, how to fly, and even finding the caves Steven oh so vehemently want to see. Surprisingly enough, the map Steven spawned in really did have a cave at the northern area of his spawn point, and the Hoenn champion did not hesitate to venture in, but not without Hau telling him to get torches in his inventory before heading in.

It was fun seeing Steven getting all giddy and excited over exploring in Orrecraft, it's like the first time he also played the game with Iris, the creative freedom that came with that game was something he really loved, but he's sure Steven's not one for building, Hau knows he'd just love to venture around and find all the gemstones he could possibly find, and perhaps trade with the npc's. Who knows, maybe soon when Steven gets the hang of it, they can create a new world with Cynthia and Iris joining in. The thought made him excited as well, one thing he loved more than just playing Orrecraft is playing Orrecraft with his friends.

Chapter 4: Grocery Run (part one)

Chapter Text

An emergency meeting took place, surprisingly called in by Cynthia. Looking distressed than usual, the Sinnoh Champion slammed her hands on the table. She looked deranged with that look, Wallace had noted loudly, and Cynthia's eye twitched at that. Her hair was tied back, her scarred left eye seen by everyone, glaring at every champion. "Someone has to do a grocery run today ," her look morphed into distress once more, hands on her hair, clawing her head, "we're out of ice cream and if I don't get some I'll go crazy!" She then clasped her hands together, " please ! See! I'm not above begging! Dia!" She looked at the Kalos Champion, "help me out, please! They'll listen to you more!" Her tone is oh so desperate.

The Champion in question has her head in her hands, equally distressed. "We're out of cake as well…" came her quiet voice, "please, even store bought cake is better than no cake."

"Well, you heard her!" Cynthia exclaimed, "get the girl some cake and get me ice cream! Please!"

"As much as I love to see Cynthia like this," Wallace spoke up, "we are low on shampoo and conditioner too," then he slowly looked away, running a hand on his hair.

"We're also out of cereals," lamented Iris, "and snacks."

"Well then, since we are running low on supplies, a grocery run it is," Steven said, "the ones to do the grocery run this time are Lance and Geeta."

"What?!" The two said in unison, then they glared at each other.

Steven sighed, "I know you two don't like each other, but please it's only fair, all of us already did our grocery run for the past Champion meetups."

"Also," Diantha spoke, to which the two Champions nervously looked at her, the Kalos Champion is someone both Lance and Geeta would never want to cross, "if you two so much as forget to buy cake, don't bother coming back home." Her voice was as cold and intense as the glare she gave them.

"Yeah!" Cynthia joined in, a hand on Diantha's shoulder and the other pointing at Geeta and Lance, "don't forget the ice cream too!"

The two Champions finally relented. Sighing, Lance spoke, "fine, we'll do it. Give us a list and we'll go."

And so a list of things to buy was made and the two Champions were off.

Fortunately, Opelucid was near the mall at Route 9, so thank Arceus for that. The walk wasn't really long, but at the same time, the two Champions did not like being together, as such the silence between them was deafening. Neither of them started a conversation, with Lance just dead set on getting to the mall and Geeta was enjoying the change of scenery, humming a quiet song to herself. A few people did turn their heads towards them, of course, seeing the Paldea Champion and Indigo Champion walking leisurely around Route 9 would catch the attention of a few locals. They even came across a man who calls himself Charles, Heartbreaker Charles to be exact. The man was donning a motorcyclist attire, his brown hair styled to a pompadour, and he grinned, challenging them to a full team triple battle.

Needless to say, he lost to Lance's Dragonite, Charizard, and Gyarados, and Geeta's Kingambit, Ceruledge, and Espathra.

And so they went on their way to the mall, watching Charles accept his defeat as he rode his bike towards Opelucid. They had to admit, he was a worthy challenger, maybe if he was Champion he'd be one to specialize in triple battles. That battle with Charles did prompt them to start a conversation with each other, although, to no one's surprise, it's an argument on who really did well during that battle.

"My Dragonite did better, he dealt the finishing blow."

"And yet your Charizard lost to his Zebstrika, how embarrassing."

It went on until they finally got to the mall, thank Arceus , and finally they ceased their argument, going on their way heading to the grocery, their only goal for today. Of course, they caught the attention of a lot of shoppers too, some kids even went to them and asked for their autographs and pictures, to which they happily obliged. But that also made other fans crowd around them, and since both of them didn't want to disappoint their supporters, they complied with those who wanted to ask for pictures too and even some advice on how to be a better battler. Once that's over, Geeta took it upon herself to excuse them, saying that the others are waiting for them at home with the groceries; that is of course, if they can still go home. If they forget at least one thing they're sure the others won't even let them step foot back at Opelucid.

That being said, buying cake was their top priority.

And so they headed straight to the bakery near the entrance of the grocery, eyeing each display hoping to find the cake that would satisfy Diantha's cravings. Lance had suggested getting her a chocolate cheesecake, as the two had one together back at Kalos. Geeta shook her head, told Lance that Diantha would much prefer double fudge chocolate cake, to satisfy both her sweet tooth and her cravings. And so, another argument broke out.

"Clearly you don't know her that well. It shows, really, as you've only known her for a few years." Geeta sneered with a smirk. "I've known mi ángel since we were kids, I know what she wants." She gloated, turning to the clerk to order the chocolate cake.

Lance scoffed, "I'm sure Diantha would still love the cake I'll get her. Even more so than yours." And he paid for the cheesecake he ordered.

The two told the clerk to just set it aside for the meantime while they shop, to which she complied, sensing tension between the two Champions.

Going on their way, Lance took the list from Geeta, "okay, we'll split this up, so we'll be even."

"Make sure it's actually fair, maybe the only thing on your list is Cynthia's ice cream."

"Oh, I'm not dealing with that ," he ripped the paper in half, giving the other half to Geeta, " you are ," he smirked then waved at her, turning his back towards her, "good luck," he chuckled as he left, heading to the cereal aisle.

Geeta gritted her teeth as she read her half of the list.

  • ICE CREAM! GET EVERY FLAVOUR THERE! -C
  • Shampoo and conditioner. Bath bombs too, Milotic just loves them. Also do get at least 20 bottles of shampoo and conditioner, darling. Many thanks~ -W. M.
  • Food. Meat, vegetables, fruits. We're running out, and frankly I do not want to rely on take out like some people in this house. - S. Stone

Crumpling the paper, she sighed, of course Lance would choose the easier ones to find. That left a bitter taste in her mouth, yet she shook her head, a smirk now gracing her lips. Reaching to her pocket, she took out another piece of paper, a copy of the list given to them. She had made another copy in case something like this would happen, and she was right. But to make sure Lance won't mess this up more, she called out her Ceruledge and Baxcalibur. The two Pokémon looking at her, thinking they're called out for a battle but Geeta merely smiled, a sinister aura behind it. "How about we give that useless Dragon Tamer a taste of his own medicine." And the two Pokémon needn't to find out more, already knowing what their master wanted, and thus they went on their way, looking for the Indigo League Champion.

Lance was quite happy with himself, looking at his own half of the list.

  • Cake. Cake mix or one that's already baked. Chocolates too. Thank you. -Dia
  • cereals and some chips! Like the big ones so there's still enough for next game night! Moomoo milk too, we just ran out, strawberry flavor! And chocolate flavor too! - Iris and Hau
  • curry mix and ingredients for it too just ran out even tho I brought some from Galar last month. thanks. -Lee

Seems easy enough. He already got one crossed out, as they took care of the cake first. He smirked to himself, pulling out another piece of paper in his own pockets, a copy of the list they gave. Geeta is so gullible , he laughed to himself, eyeing the actual list of things he has to buy. He then called out Dragonite and Charizard, looking up at the two, "make sure that pathetic 'Top Champion' doesn't interfere with us," and the two had nodded gliding across the grocery in search of Paldea's Champion.

With the two dead set on being the better one in their grocery quest, the two of them were also unaware of the ruse the other had planned.

"Alright, the cake is already secured, what's next…" Geeta looked at the list, the next of her priorities are Cynthia's ice cream, of course. She had no choice but to go to the frozen food aisle, as Lance would probably expect her to be there, and she'd rather not want him to be suspicious that she has a copy of the list. So she went to the ice cream section of the aisle, glancing at all the different brands. Geeta wasn't really sure what brand Cynthia wanted specifically, but, she tells herself, hopefully the Sinnoh Champion won't mind, ice cream is still ice cream for her.

So she took one flavour for each brand, until she's sure she has every ice cream flavour the store has.

Once that's done, she crossed that off her list. Since the seasonings and mixes are near the frozen food aisle, she opted to get Leon's curry mix. Walking there, she saw a blur of light orange fly about idly, peeking from one of the stalls, she saw none other but Lance's Dragonite. Growling to herself, she cursed, then she called out her Espathra. "Distract it. I will not lose this game." And so, her Espathra ran to the other side, squawking and shaking its tail in front of Dragonite, taunting it. As expected, Lance's Dragonite shares his short tempered manner, huffing out a puff of smoke, it growled and flew to chase off Espathra.

Geeta chuckled, it got his brains too. What an idiot.

Going on her merry way, she eyed all the mixes and seasonings displayed on the stalls. She found the curry mix she knew was made in Galar, Leon was always so nitpicky when it comes to it, and she'd rather not deal with his dramatic ass.

Now that that's crossed off the list, she eyed the next one. Not fighting back the smirk on her lips, she wonders if Lance was having a hard time with his own half , as she sent Ceruledge and Baxcalibur to distract him.

Lance was doing great. Until he wasn't. Slipping on the floor, he fell face first, but he still had his grip tight on his basket, making sure to not let the chocolate and chips fall off. Growling to himself as he stood, he looked behind him, hearing heavy footsteps, and saw a dark blue tail with red spikes almost rushing within the aisle before him. Baxcalibur. He then saw a blur of beige and orange at the corner of his eyes. Turning he saw a glimpse of Dragonite chasing Espathra. "So that's how it is, huh," he sneered, pulling out another Pokeball from his belt, calling out his Hydreigon, "help Dragonite, once that's settled find Geeta and make sure she loses this game." So with a grunt, Hydreigon flew off to the direction of its comrade, flying low to not alarm any other shoppers.

Hydreigon managed to track down Baxcalibur, hovering low to make sure no other shopper would be alarmed, it's a good thing it's still early in the morning, there's not much people around. Once he spotted the other Dragon, he growled, his two other heads almost sneering as well. Baxcalibur merely snarled in response, grabbing a can of beans, flinging it towards the Brutal Pokemon. One of Hydreigon's heads caught it with ease, the other reached for a pack of pasta, chucking it towards the Ice Dragon Pokemon, yet Baxcalibur took a step forward, jaw unhinged, biting down hard on the pack, almost spitting it to the ground.

The two Dragons were glaring at each other, waiting for the other to strike. As both of them were about to grab the nearest item, a voice cut through the thickness of the tension.

"Excuse me, deary," an elderly voice spoke, tapping her cane lightly on Baxcalibur, "but can you please get that can of beans and sausages for me?" She smiled up at the two imposing Dragons. On her other hand was a leash, trailing to a Herdier by her side, it was looking expectantly at them.

Hydreigon flew over, as the stall was too high for Baxcalibur's arms to reach, as it got the product, it handed it over to Baxcalibur, which then placed it gently on the woman's basket. The woman smiled, "thank you kindly, dears," she chuckled, "but do behave yourselves, clean this up," she motioned her cane to the packed pasta on the floor, "we don't want anyone slipping now." With a nod, she and her Herdier left, leaving Hydreigon and Baxcalibur to clean their mess.

Ceruledge soon found Charizard, with a grunt, it raised one of its blades in challenge, with Charizard huffing out a puff of smoke. Narrowing his eyes, Ceruledge twirled gracefully down the snack aisle, his sharp blades at the ready. Charizard, ever the fiery challenger, hovered above, eyes gleaming with a threatening glint.

It all began innocently enough. Ceruledge, with a sly look, hurled a bag of potato chips toward Charizard, who deftly dodged the incoming snack. Grunts and growls echoed through the store as the battle escalated into a full-blown chip-throwing frenzy.

Ceruledge sent bags soaring through the air, each chip-filled package whizzing toward Charizard like edible projectiles. The Flame Pokemon responded with a weak Flamethrower, attempting to turn the chips into a crispy, delicious rain.

As bits of chips rained down around them, it alarmed one of the clerks of the mall, calling in their manager. The two pokemon resumed their showdown, their glare could petrify many, as they lunged towards each other with a thunderous cry.

In another aisle, near the frozen food, Espathra and Dragonite stand face to face. Dragonite was growling, claws clenching to fists, electric energy surging through them. Espathra crooned, shaking its head, eyes glowing an ominous light as its psychic powers took frozen meat and fish from the freezer, aiming them towards the Dragon Pokemon.

Dragonite merely smirked, Thunder Punch at the ready. As his fists were about to collide with the frozen food, a voice stopped both of their attacks.

"That's enough!"

Looking towards the source, they saw a scrawny young man, trembling like a leaf, yet trying so hard to look intimidating. He tried to puff his chest, mustering the courage to speak, "please, put those down, it won't be the two of you cleaning this mess up," he said, although there's a small waver in his voice. The two pokemon finally noticed he was wearing the store's uniform, a name tag just below his left collar. Espathra crooned softly, using her psychic abilities to return the frozen food, as the electric energy that once surged through his claws finally dissipated, both looking down as if to apologize.

"Where are…" he sighed, a shaky breath, "where are your trainers?" He looked at them, really looked at them, then his eyes widened. "Oh.. oh, please don't tell me you're the Champions' Pokemon…" he trailed off, face palling. "Oh no…"

Just as the two Pokemon try to reassure him, they all heard a thunderous cry from a few aisles over, crackling of flames and chips echoing. The man looked at the general direction of the sound, and he sighed, slumping over, "I'll… I'll go get my supervisor…" he mumbled mostly to himself. Espathra and Dragonite could only look at each other before they dashed off, seeking their trainers.

And of course, they found Lance and Geeta near the hygiene products.

"You don't even know Wallace's preference when it comes to hair care products," Lance sneers, with hubris as large as Eternatus, he smirked, "unlike you who only knew him for a few years, I've known Wallace since before we both became Champions."

"I'm sure Wallace would still appreciate the brand I'd get him," Geeta shot back, glowering at him, "he always said he wanted to know what I use."

Lance scrutinized the array of shampoo bottles with a discerning eye. "I know Wallace prefers the rugged, outdoorsy scent of a Dragon Claw Fresh shampoo. Something as bold and adventurous as his Milotic's Hydro Pump."

Geeta raised an eyebrow, sneering, "oh please, Lance. Wallace strikes me as more of a Silk Blossom Elegance kind of person. His Milotic might be fierce, but Wallace himself exudes a refined charm." She huffed as she smirked, taking the bottle from the shelf, waving it towards Lance, "Silk Blossom is the epitome of sophistication."

Lance folded his arms across his chest, "Silk Blossom? Really?" He rolled his eyes with a sardonic laugh, "I've battled Wallace, and trust me, there's nothing silky about the way he commands his Water-types. He's all about strength and power!"

Geeta countered with a diplomatic smile, "Strength and power, sure, but with finesse. Wallace appreciates the delicate balance between might and grace. Silk Blossom captures that essence perfectly."

As their dispute continued, a cry from Dragonite and Espathra made them turn their heads. Though, as they were about to ask their Pokemon what's wrong, they saw two other figures with them that clearly aren't the rest of their pokemon; one was a scrawny young man looking nervously at them, the other was a tall and well built woman looking rather professional, with an unsure but also resolute look in her face. It finally dawned on Lance and Geeta what's going on.

"Champions," the woman began, voice strained, "as much as we appreciate the two of you being here to grace us with your presence, I don't think this is the place for… battles ." The grocery store manager, a stern-looking woman, approached the Champions, hands on her hips. "I'm sorry, but with all the damage your Pokemon has done here in the store, I'll have to ask you to leave."

Lance sweatdropped, swallowing a lump in his throat, as he glanced at Dragonite before his gaze shifted back to the woman, "surely," he tried, voice a bit too desperate for his liking, "the damage they did isn't that bad, is it?"

Pinching the bridge of her nose, the woman sighed, "Champion Lance, Champion Geeta," she looked at each of them, then continued, "we found your Baxcalibur and Hydreigon at the cannes food aisle, throwing cans and pasta at each other, it's a good thing they didn't hurt the elderly lady who passed by," Lance and Geeta made a teeth sucking sound, "then Simon here," the woman motioned to the young man next to her, who jolted when his name was mentioned, "saw your Dragonite and Espathra about to fight in the frozen food aisle, with Espathra using the frozen food to fight Dragonite with." Then an exasperated sigh left her lips, "don't get me started on Ceruledge and Charizard." She shook her head, unable to shake off the memory of seeing the chips aisle, all burnt wrappers and crushed chips all over the floor and the stalls.

Guilty as they are, Geeta took a step forward, "I apologize for our Pokemon's behaviour, it was rather… foolish of them to go this far. I assure you, we will pay for the damages." She said, hoping it's reassure the store manager.

Heaving out a sigh, the store manager nodded, "I'll be counting on that, Champion. It was already hard enough to stock up after Plasma's attack, even years after…" she quietly said the last part, then she shook her head, now looking back to both Lance and Geeta, "your other Pokemon are outside with security, I'm sorry to say this, but I'm afraid I can't let you two come back here for a short while, we can't let another incident like this to happen again."

With a nod, the two Champions followed the manager outside, leaving their groceries and paying for the damages. Feeling dejected and humiliated, they kept their heads down as they went outside, their Pokemon trailing behind them.

Now as they're walking along Route 9, Geeta spoke, "this is a disaster, we can't go home empty-handed."

"For once I agree with you."

"There must be another mall or shop we can go to," Geeta took out her Rotom phone, looking at the map of Unova and its landmarks. Scrolling through the map, she zoomed in on Castelia, "here, there must be a mall in the cityscape. Plus, they sell Casteliacones there."

Lance looked at her incredulously, "Castelia? That's so far away from here."

Geeta gave him a look, "so you'd rather face Diantha's wrath knowing we left her cake at the store?"

Lance opened his mouth to argue back, yet no words left his lips. With a sigh, he relented, "you're right. Let's go."

Tired and honestly so peeved at each other, Lance called out his Hydreigon and Dragonite, as he and Geeta flew over to the direction of Castelia. This day was honestly getting longer and they absolutely hated it. Then again, they're the only ones to blame for it, and they'd rather get this over with than to go back to Opelucid to face the others, Cynthia and Diantha especially.

They all know how those two can get without the sweets they want, and they'd rather not face their wrath. After all, the Distortion World has no fury like those two Champions scorned.

Arceus, the way to Castelia is going to be a long one.

sorry this took so long a lot of shit just happened so like yeah hahah

Chapter 6: Getting Older

Chapter Text

Lysandre was long gone but oftentimes he still crosses Diantha's mind. His charisma, his ideals, how his ideas shine as bright as the sun, how she fell for those lies as well. Eternal beauty, eternal youth, a beautiful world devoid of anything he deems as the world's ugliness, that was his vision of a perfect world. She remembers all too well her conversation with him, it was just the two of them, she remembers it well.

"I cannot stand the thought of the world becoming uglier."

She remembers his words, remembers how he stared at her as he took a sip of his coffee, remembers the atmosphere was bitter cold, a far cry from warmth he exudes towards everyone else.

He's long gone now, but oftentimes that crosses her mind. To be eternally youthful, to be eternally beautiful. Sometimes she wonders how it'd be like if he had won, sometimes she wonders if she'd be as vain as those actors and actresses she despises, sometimes she wonders what happened to them as well. They joined Flare, she knows, they were too proud of it. She hasn't heard from them since. She often wonders what compelled them to join, some of them weren't that driven by their own ego to be swayed by such claims of Flare with their promise of eternal youth, of eternal beauty. But perhaps she doesn't know them that well, the same way they barely know her despite her name and face being at every corner of Kalos.

What was so enticing about that promise? Of course, perhaps they were enticed with the thought of being perfect, of the thought of being beautiful for eternity, of retaining their youth.

Youth…

It may be beautiful, but it's not all there is to life. Everything always changes, and she wants to live and change like that too.

And change she has. She's getting older now, oftentimes she doesn't realize she is, but then she sees grey strands on her hair, sees the weariness in her eyes, sees the world evolve throughout the years.

She admits, oftentimes it scares her, the thought of aging without doing a lot of things in her life, to leave behind an empty legacy she isn't proud of, to leave behind nothing she could proudly present to her past self. She knows there are people in Kalos who don't like her, whether they're tired of seeing her face everywhere, or perhaps she still isn't the Champion they'd wanted. She's sure one of the former Elite Four resents her until today, though she'd rather not dwell on it, she'd rather not think of how two Fire Specialists had some sort of resentment towards her. At least with Malva they found a common ground, they're in good terms now fortunately, Sir Ignis never changed, she fears he never will.

The thought of it lingers within her mind, but she tries to not let it bother her, after all, could she really say that knowing she somehow left an indelible mark to the people that matters to her the most? Surely not. Especially now, as she's watching both Hau and Iris training to master Mega Evolution.

Iris raised her hand, clutching the Mega Stone that Diantha had bestowed upon her. "Salamence, it's time to soar to new heights! Mega Evolve!" A burst of radiant energy surrounded Salamence, transforming it into the imposing Mega Salamence. Its wings expanded, radiating power and a newfound aura of dominance.

Hau grinned, a mischievous spark in his eyes as he held out the Mega Stone Diantha had given him. "Alakazam, let's show 'er what we're made of! Mega Evolve!" The air tingled with psychic energy as Alakazam underwent a dazzling transformation, its spoons gleaming with an otherworldly glow.

Iris stood confidently on one side, her piercing gaze locked on Hau, the energetic Alolan Champion, on the other. The air crackled with excitement as they prepared to Mega Evolve their trusted pokemon.

The battlefield, a clearing from a dense evergreen forest, became a field of pulsating energy as Mega Salamence and Mega Alakazam faced each other, each emanating power beyond what they were capable of.

"Salamence, Iron Tail!" Iris commanded. Salamence's tail glowed with a metal-like energy as it charged towards Alakazam with a speed that could rival Cynthia's Garchomp.

Hau remained focused. "Alakazam, create a psychic barrier!" Mega Alakazam's spoons moved in a hypnotic dance, creating a psychic shield that absorbed the impact of the Iron Tail, leaving it unscathed.

Iris smirked, recognizing the challenge. "Salamence, Dragon Rush!" Salamence surged forward with its incredible speed, aiming to break through Alakazam's defenses with a powerful Dragon-type attack.

Hau responded swiftly. "Alakazam, dodge it!" Alakazam vanished from sight, reappearing behind Mega Salamence in a display of teleportation mastery, avoiding the Dragon Rush effortlessly.

The battle unfolded with a great display of power and strategy. Mega Salamence and Mega Alakazam traded blows, each proving the strength and bond between Trainer and Pokémon.

The dust settled, both Mega Salamence and Mega Alakazam stood tall, their trainers wearing proud smiles, the battle was far from over.

Diantha couldn't help but marvel at their progress, to see how much they've grown through the years. They're stronger now, stronger than her, though they're too humble to ever admit that, and she's too proud of it to ever make them forget. It's been years of course, Hau and Iris are older and wiser, yet they still had that youthful charm they had despite everything. Perhaps there are some things that never truly change.

She can't help but chuckle as Hau taunts Iris across the field, Alakazam's spoons honing towards Salamence, the Dragon effortlessly dodged almost every one of it, except for the last one, which Alakazam used to lightly tap on Salamence's snout before returning back to the Psi Pokemon. It got Hau's mischievous streak, that's for sure. And of course, Salamence got Iris' temper as it rushed towards Alakazam with Shadow Claw, Iris jeering back at Hau.

The battle was nearing its end, Diantha can tell. Blow after blow, taunting here and there. Salamence and Iris with their pride, and Hau and Alakazam with their impish grins, clashed, the leaves surrounding them dancing with the breeze as Salamence flew up high in the sky, Alakazam readying its spoons again, its psychic powers swirling around him like a powerful aura. The two charged towards each other with newfound vigor, both wanting to prove themselves stronger, the same way their trainers do.

The impact sent shockwaves of dust and rubble and even twigs and leaves flying about, Diantha's Gardevoir had put up a barrier for them and for Hau and Iris to shield them from the debris.

As the forest clearing settled from the intensity of the clash, Iris and her Salamence stood triumphant. The imposing Mega Salamence, crimson wings outstretched, exuded an air of victory as it let out another thunderous roar, almost shaking the earth. Hau, acknowledging the skill of his opponent, smiled and recalled Alakazam as it reverted back to its original form, the spoons gently clinking.

Diantha couldn't help but smile as the two young Champions met halfway across the field, shaking hands, proud of the battle they had. Of course, she was proud as well, as she and her Gardevoir approached them.

"Very well done, my darlings," she said, clapping her hands, Gardevoir nodding alongside her. Hau gave her a toothy grin, Iris almost looked sheepish as she rubbed the back of her neck.

"Yeah, but Iris still came out on top," Hau said with a faux pensive look, arms folded behind his head as he shrugged, "it was fun though!"

"I'm glad you two had fun, that's all that matters," Diantha said with a soft smile, watching the two converse, talking about their strategies, about the recent battle. She chuckled to herself, motioning for the young Champions to follow her back to the city, promising them of their reward, Cafe Soleil's famous chocolate cake. Their excitement was contagious as the two walked towards the route heading to Lumiose, Diantha trailing behind them.

The Kalos Champion couldn't help but let out a wistful sigh as she watched the young Champions, her children, glance back at her with a grin before they went straight ahead again. They've grown taller, she remembers when they could barely reach her shoulders, now she can barely reach theirs. They changed, yet they're still the charismatic young Champions she grew to love, taller and wiser now, more powerful than they were before, and she let out a quiet chuckle thinking about it. How they really weren't children anymore, they've grown older now. Everything changes, she knows, and they lived and changed like that too.

She then felt her psychic connection with her Gardevoir, hearing her partner's voice within her mind.

"They've made quite the progress." The Embrace Pokemon commented, Diantha could feel the warmth in her voice.

Diantha's gaze once again met the figures of Iris and Hau, "they have," she breathed out, "and I couldn't be any prouder."

Youth, what a fleeting thing. They're getting older now, changing each and every day, but that's the beauty of it all.

Notes:

Okay small context why they have those mons
For Hau it's bc of my lil villain au and one of my mutuals, JerseyK, said that Hau could have an Abra which then turns to an Alakazam, then he can mega evolve it
And I was all, okay that's dope af, so yeah hahah
For Iris I think that's the most obvious one to give her lmfao
Anyways yeah I did this all in one go so if it sucks, then it is what it is hahah

Chapter 7: Progress

Chapter Text

Leon always had this habit of suddenly barging in Cynthia's or Lance's room whenever he gets excited over something, Cynthia usually since she's more open with him than anyone else. Plus, Cynthia has always been somewhat of a sisterly figure to him. The Sinnoh Champion became one of his closest friends, one of his trusted confidants, the two of them confided in each other during meetings. So, by now, Cynthia was used to Leon's eccentricities.

And here he was, speed walking along the halls of Geeta's manor (it's terrifying how rich she was, Leon's pretty sure Geeta could buy his tower if she so desires), heading straight to the room Cynthia's staying at. A big grin was plastered on his face, he just found a popular ice cream parlour at Mesagoza, and he's so sure she hasn't been there yet, after all, they just got here yesterday, and Cynthia slept the entire day while he and the others went out to venture more. He's sure she'll love it there, they have flavours he didn't even know existed, so perhaps it'd satiate Cynthia's tastes.

His sight caught her room, and he almost lunged at the door, slamming it open, almost breaking its hinges. "Thia, do I have a surprise for you—" though he was suddenly cut off, "oh…" was the only thing he could muster as he took in the sight before him.

Cynthia, almost dead to the world, was staring blankly at the ceiling. She hasn't changed from her clothes since yesterday, her bed and even her hair was a mess, one of her arms was laying idly beside her, the other was on top of her Garchomp's head, who was lying on top of her stomach. He hears Garchomp whimper as she nuzzles close to its trainer, Cynthia's hand on it was unmoving, as the Mach Pokemon then looked at Leon with pleading eyes.

Leon's brows furrowed, worry replacing the joy he had, as he slowly approached her, sitting on the edge of the bed. He looked at her, took in her features, there were bags under her eyes, she looked so tired. It was one of those days. Another pitiful whine from Garchomp, and Leon let out a sigh.

"Hey, wanna talk about it?" He tried, but he already knows the answer.

"What is there to talk about?" Her voice was raspy. Has she even drunk at least a glass of water since yesterday?

"Fair," he said with a hum, "well… Do you wanna do anything?"

"No."

"Shame," shaking his head, he shrugged, "and I was about to surprise you too."

"Nothing you say will entice me into getting up from this bed." She had always been so stubborn.

"Not even ice cream?" He grinned.

A pause. Then she spoke, "maybe there is one thing…"

Leon chuckled, "I was gonna bring you to this one ice cream shop down at Mesagoza," he began, never minding her unsolicited comment on how he even found his way there, "but I have an even better idea now!" She raised a brow at him, "what better way to enjoy ice cream than to make it, yeah?"

She groaned at that. "I'm not particularly keen on making things. Do I have to remind you the last time you all made me cook?"

Leon laughed at that, the look on Diantha's face was so priceless when she saw her kitchen burning because Cynthia tried to cook something for all of them. He then spoke, "yeah, but we don't have to really cook anything, it's just ice cream anyway." Pushing himself off the bed, he grinned as he turned to her, “I'll go prepare the stuff we need. You should go change, you're stinky,” he laughed, poking her cheek, causing her to sneer at him.

“Do you really say shit like that to a woman?”

“Only you, Thia,” he quipped, laughing as he walked towards the door, then he added, “well, Diantha too, it pisses her off,” he chuckled as he finally left.

Now alone with her thoughts and her Garchomp, Cynthia let out a deep and somewhat exasperated sigh. He was right, she should go change. Garchomp was gently nuzzling her hand, a small whimper escaping it's about. A sad smile crossed her features as she slowly sat up from her bed, sitting on the edge, Garchomp then placed its head on her lap, letting her pet its head. "Guess I made you worried too, didn't I?" A whine was what she got as a response. "I'm sorry," came her quiet whisper, cupping either side of the Mach Pokemon's visage, pulling her close to bump their foreheads together, "I'm sorry…" she repeated.

Garchomp let out a huff, nuzzling close to her, almost shoving her. Cynthia chuckled despite it all, "I know, I know, he's right." She then went to her drawers, taking out a few clothes; it was… refreshing, to say the least. To be out of those restricting champion clothing, though she was at fault for that, Sinnoh's climate too, she just thought an all black attire would look great. But now in more comfortable clothing, she could somehow breathe a bit better. Garchomp approached her, quick on its feet as it caught her just on time, her knees were a bit weak, it's only been a day, her body was not faring well.

A worried huff came from her Garchomp, Cynthia's trying to control her breathing. Clinging to Garchomp as the pokemon wrapped its arms around her for support. Cynthia's hand ran along Garchomp's scales, it was rough, but not as rough as those with its hidden ability. She could hear a deep rumbling sound from the back of Garchomp's throat, a worried and desperate whine for her to stand back on her feet. Gritting her teeth, she looks around, she sees her clothes on the bed; sees herself in the mirror, hair disheveled, bags under her silver eye, face paler than before; sees the worried look of her partner pokemon.

Cynthia tried to crack a smile, failing miserably. "I'm okay, I'll be okay," she says, more to herself than anything, "it's just one of those days," she tried to lighten up the mood, she doesn't want to worry her Garchomp anymore, yet it didn't seem to ease her Pokemon's concern. "I promise, I'll be okay," she said, insistent, gently petting its snout, "I have Leon with me, we're going to make ice cream, maybe you can have some too," she said, grabbing Garchomp's pokeball from the vanity. Turning back to her pokemon, she gently tapped the ball onto its snout, recalling it back to the red and black capsule. At first, she opted to leave Garchomp there with the rest of her team, but… with a shaky breath, she shook her head, bringing Garchomp's pokeball along with her, as she left the room, walking close to the walls for support, gripping the handrail of the stairs tight as she descended to head to the kitchen where Leon was waiting for her.

When she arrived, Leon already had the ingredients needed placed on the table. Clearing her throat, she got his attention from his phone, then he grinned.

"You actually came down," he said, his excitement was infectious, she couldn't help but smile. There was a sliver of disbelief in his voice too, not that she could really blame him, it was always hard to get her out of her room during days like this one.

Clutching her Garchomp's pokeball, she shot back, "you said ice cream, of course I'd come down."

His feet were slightly tapping the floor, he always did that when he was excited. "Great! I already have everything prepared, it's surprising Geeta has a ton of marshmallows around," he then motioned to the big pack of marshmallows on the table, the marshmallows inside were also quite big. Arceus, where does Geeta buy this and how much was it, she needs that, that's a need now, not a want.

But she couldn't help but wonder, "marshmallows?"

The Galar Champion nodded, "yeah! I was watching some videos on ice cream we can easily make, and marshmallows seem to be the easiest one," he showed her his phone, a bunch of videos about marshmallow ice cream on the screen, the duration of the videos were all around forty-five seconds to a minute at most. He then set it aside, taking the pack of marshmallows and opening it, "first we have to microwave these for fifty seconds," he said, pouring the marshmallows on the cup, he then handed it to her, "you can go do that while I prepare the creme and condensed milk."

Placing Garchomp's pokeball next to Leon's phone, she then took the cup and went towards where the microwave was. Fifty seconds, she repeated in her head, placing the cup inside the microwave, putting in the time, and watching as it revolved within the machine. She glanced at Leon, taking cans of milk and creme from the cupboards, humming as he took the can opener as well, denting opposite ends of the top of the can to make it easier for the liquid to flow out the tin container.

A ring cut her off her thoughts, as she turned to open the microwave, taking a nearby towel to protect her hand from burning, as she took the cup from the microwave. She went to Leon, he took the cup from her hands, using a silicone spatula to scrape off the marshmallows from the cup. It was a fear though, he had to admit, the marshmallows clung to the cup rather well it seems, but he managed.

"Oh, can you also get the graham crackers on the cupboards?" He asked, though his gaze never left the bowl in his hands, as he mixed the marshmallows and creme together.

Cynthia nodded and went to get the crackers.

Leon took a quick glance at her, smiling to himself. He knew how much of a struggle it was to get Cynthia out of bed during these days, while he wasn't sure what burden of the past came to plague her mind today, he knew he just can't leave her to suffer alone. But, he has to admit, it was a surprise she really came down to help him make ice cream, he thought he'd just have to make it by himself and surprise her with it, though this was a much better outcome than what he had first thought.

"Y'know, Garchomp can help us if you want," he quietly said, taking the crackers from her.

She pondered over it a bit, then she said, "it's okay, I don't think there'd be enough space in Geeta's kitchen, and I'd rather she not break things," looking around she shuddered, "everything here looks expensive."

With a nod, he chuckled, "tell me about it."

The two progressed with their work, with Cynthia gradually adding both the condensed milk and the crushed graham crackers on the mix, Leon was holding the bowl and the mixer, rambling on about his recent battle. Cynthia listened to every word, it gave her closure, grounded her and brought her back to reality as her thoughts drifted to unpleasant territories. Leon's voice was soothing, despite him being a bit obnoxious, it reminded her of home. Now the two placed the mix in the freezer, setting up a timer of an hour, and they ended up talking about a lot of things. Well, it was Leon doing most of the talking.

He talked a lot, about anything that came across his mind, from his brother, to his partners, to his Champion title, to his thoughts about the other Champions.

"What do you think about me?" Cynthia asked, she wasn't sure why, but curiosity killed the Purrloin. Why would she even ask that? She was sure what he thought of her right? A fellow Champion, one of his friends, though the last one she really wishes would be true. She didn't meet his gaze, eye fixed on her hands on the table, trembling ever so slightly. Then she saw his own hands envelop hers, he was warm, it felt nice.

His voice, always so soothing, always so comforting, so calming, she couldn't bear to look at him, he spoke, "I think you're one of the strongest people I know," she could feel his smile, genuine, unlike the ones he shows in public. "You're a role model to everyone," he continued, she almost believed that, but there's a lingering thought in her mind saying that people shouldn't look up to her. Look at her. She's pathetic. She then felt him grip her hands tighter, running a thumb over her own, "you're like a sister to me, and I know Iris and Hau would say the same thing."

She took in a sharp breath, to say those things today of all days, she can't help but let out a weak chuckle, finally craning her head and looking at him. "Am I really that great?" She asked, voice not above a whisper, "you really think so?"

He flashed his signature smile at her, nodding, "I know so."

Today was one of those days for Cynthia. Those days where she can't stand her own thoughts; those days where she wished her mind would just shut up; those days where everything felt dull; she can't stand these days. Yet, here she is, during one of those days, but the thoughts that shackled her within the darkest corners of her mind dissipated at the warmth of her friend before her. It was one of those days, yet she found the strength to get out of bed to make ice cream with Leon.

It wasn't much, Cynthia knows that, but it was progress.

Chapter Text

Diantha was unusually quiet this meeting, Geeta had noticed. Although Diantha was usually quiet, she was never this quiet; almost as if she wasn't listening to what the others were saying at all. There's this empty look in her eyes, chin prompted on top of her clasped hands, her Elite Four sitting beside her, listening to what the other Champions are sharing, about the upcoming Champions Tournament. An ongoing debate has been up in the air as Lance, and Cynthia, and even Iris and Hau were arguing on where to hold said Tournament. Lance had insisted to hold the Tournament at Indigo Plateau, Cynthia stuck her tongue out giving him a thumbs down, saying it should be at Sinnoh’s Battle Frontier; Iris piped in, going on about Driftveil’s PWT Stadium, as a lot of people already visit there from all around Unova and even from other regions. Hau added that Alola’s Battle Tree needed the attention as well, strong trainers from all over the globe had already battled there, even pointing out Cynthia herself had enjoyed her time there.

Cynthia shuddered at the mere mention of Alola, Iris laughed at that, the Sinnoh Champion was never keen on Alola's heat. Wallace made a snide comment that she should wear something other than black, which resulted in a mock offended look from Cynthia, a hand on her chest. While it's true that she enjoyed her time at the Battle Tree, she did not, in fact, liked the scorching heat of the region.

Geeta glanced at Diantha, there's still that empty look in her eyes. Diantha sighed, sitting upright, one hand raised, silencing the arguing Champions. Of course, being in Kalos right now, the Champion of the region is the one who will make the decision during this meeting, though they all let Diantha decide on things such as this, despite how people perceive her to be, she has never been biased. “I've made my decision,” came her angelic, yet hollow voice, “the Tournament will be held at Mesagoza in Paldea,” she turned to Geeta, “is that alright?”

Geeta nodded, “yes, I shall inform my league soon.”

Diantha hummed, turning to the rest, “if that's all, then you're all dismissed.”

The Elite Four stood first, Wikstrom and Siebold bowing ever so slightly as they left, Drasna and Malva following suit. Though Geeta didn't miss the way Drasna turned her head back to look at Diantha, a worried look etched on her face, before finally following the rest of the Elites outside. The Champions then left, arguing about something else now, making fun of Leon, as they all overruled his suggestion that the Champions Tournament could be held in Galar. They all denied it as the Masters Eight Tournament was held in Wyndon a few years back.

One by one they left, Geeta lingered, as did Diantha.

“And I thought you weren't biased, mi ángel,” she chuckled, approaching the Kalos Champion. And for the first time since the meeting began, Diantha smiled, albeit a small one.

“It's not being biased, mon chéri,” she waved her hand dismissively, “we’ve only ever had one tournament in your region, and I rather miss visiting there.”

“That's true,” now standing besides Diantha, they both looked at the view from the league. “There is an upcoming festival as well.”

“I'm aware. We met during that festival, didn't we?” there's this wistful look in her eyes, “I still can't believe no one invited you to enjoy the festivities.”

“I didn't have many friends when I was younger,” she then turned to Diantha, “I'm glad you came there during that time, though. It was the first time I ever joined the festival.”

Diantha smiled at that, “me too.” Then there's that look in her eyes again, Geeta suddenly remembers the date of the tournament, the festival, and why Diantha chose Paldea. Quietly, Diantha added, “she would've loved to join this year's festivities.”

Geeta took a step closer to her, a small reassuring squeeze on her shoulder, “she would. Perhaps she would even befriend the young trainers there as well.”

Diantha was quiet for a moment, leaning against Geeta's chest, the Paldean Champion’s arms wrapped around her. Though Diantha's gaze was still fixated on the view of the League’s gardens, the sight always calmed her. With a sigh, she spoke softly, “I haven't visited her in a while,” wrapping her arms around Geeta's waist, she leaned in closer, her voice carrying a sadness as it echoed, “I miss her.”

With a low hum, Geeta leaned in close, “then let us visit her.”

~

It has been years, decades probably, since they both last been here. Diantha’s old home with her mother was at an uphill climb in Shalour City, far from the common folk that her mother clearly despises. Diantha's mother reminds Geeta of her own parents, perhaps that's one of the reasons she and Diantha became close, kindred spirits if you will, both sheltered and hated by their own kin, finding solace in the arms of someone else, someone just as broken as they are. Diantha had always said that perhaps it's Arceus’ way of apologizing to them, breaking the chains from the hatred of their parents, finding each other amidst the discord that is life.

Though, despite it all, there's a clear hesitance in the way Diantha approaches the gates to her mother’s old manor. They both know Alethea Carnet has been long gone, but Diantha herself doesn't know if her mother was truly dead or she's not in Kalos anymore. She’d rather not find out.

With a heavy sigh, Diantha reached out to open the gates, a deep unsettling creek reverberated within the otherwise peaceful forest surrounding the manor. It sent a shiver down Diantha's spine. Glancing back at Geeta with pleading eyes, her friend gave her a soft smile as she took her hand, a silent promise she won't leave her.

Entering the gates, the atmosphere felt like there was a drop in temperature. It grew colder, bitter cold. There was something eerie about the place now, having been abandoned for Arceus knows how long, it's probably teeming with Ghost Pokemon inside the wooden doors. It could easily pass off as a haunted house now, with how it looks, the condition it's in; the paint of the exterior was peeling, pipes and windowsills dangling from their places, high up from the third floor, moss covered the pavement heading to the main doors, plants and flowers wilting and rotting all over the yard. The once green and lush bushes are nothing more but thorns with dead leaves still attached to some of the branches.

It was quiet. Too quiet. Despite being surrounded by an evergreen forest, the sounds of forest dwelling Pokemon seem to be distant now as they closed the gates behind them, it was almost as if not even the Pokemon wanted to be within the proximity of the manor. Granted, its former Lady was never keen on Pokemon as well.

Fortunately for them, they didn't have to enter the manor itself, their destination was the backyard garden, where Diantha’s old friend rests.

On the way there was quiet as well, the rustling of leaves and soles on grass and dirt and mud and stone, Diantha's breath hitched as a gravestone came to view. Letting go of her hand, Geeta watched as Diantha approached the grave, holding the flowers she brought with both hands now, kneeling in front of the grave, placing the flowers beside it.

People believe that the Gardevoir Diantha has was her first Pokemon, that she started her journey with Ralts, forged such a deep and sacred bond they surpassed normal evolution, achieving Mega Evolution, becoming powerful versions of themselves thanks to the bonds that tied them together.

Geeta knew better than that.

No, Diantha’s first Pokemon wasn't Ralts, Ralts was her second Pokemon, a gift from the former manor staff. Diantha promised them she'll take care of the Feeling Pokemon just as it will take care of her; her first Pokemon was a Carbink. It was an odd Carbink, with skin of deep slate and the brightest of blues for its mane, its gems would glow amidst the darkness, it gave Diantha the most comfort when she was younger.

Walking towards where Diantha was, Geeta noticed how hard Diantha was trying not to cry. Her hand trembled as she softly caressed the name engraved on the stone.

Diancie.

Geeta knelt beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. “Dia...” she began, quietly, reaching out to wipe the tear that fell down to Diantha's cheek.

Diantha managed to force out a smile, “I know,” she said, a small waver in her voice, “it's been years but…” swallowing the lump in her throat she continued, “but it still hurts.” There was a pause, then Diantha spoke again, “maybe if I had been a better trainer…” she cut herself off, shaking her head with a shaky sigh, “no, I mustn't think of such things now. But…” slowly, almost with heavy reluctance, she reaches within her coat’s pocket, pulling out a Cherish Ball, “we never found her, you know. Mother only said she ran away, probably offed by the Houndoom. For once, she granted me one wish, out of pity, out of negligence, I'd rather not dwell, but she let me make a memorial for Diancie.” gently placing the Cherish Ball near the flowers, Diantha leaned against Geeta's shoulder, “there's a part of me that believes she's out there, but it's been years… I should accept that she's most likely dead by now.” then in a quieter voice, she said, “sometimes I think she hated me that she just ran away.”

“Do you truly believe Diancie could ever hate you?” Geeta questioned, Diantha let out another shaky breath.

“How could she not?”

“Because she loves you, Diantha.” Geeta shifted, making Diantha face her, a gentle squeeze on her shoulders, “I'm not good with emotions, you know this, Pokemon were my only friends back before I met you. When I saw you and Diancie, I could see just how much she trusted you. She loves you, Dia.” She smiled at Diantha, though it didn't quite reach her eyes, there was a hopeful glint in Diantha's own that gave her the reassurance she's doing something right. “Wherever she may be, I don't think that will ever change.”

A weak chuckle left Diantha's lips, leaning closer to Geeta. “That's… a nice thought.” Looking at the Cherish Ball near the grave, Diantha sighed then tugged lightly on Geeta’s arm, “let's go home.”

“What about..?” She motioned to the discarded capsule near Diancie’s tombstone.

Diantha's reply was quiet, almost a whisper, almost as if she's just mumbling to herself, convincing herself, she says, “sometimes at night I like to believe that she's still out there,” helping Geeta up, she glanced back at the Cherish Ball, “maybe if I leave her pokeball here… she'd find it and come back home to me.” she said, also leaving a piece of her, a small bracelet she and Diancie had made in their youth, to accompany the Cherish Ball along with a small note attached to the bouquet of flowers. Diantha will come back for it tomorrow.

With a nod, Geeta gently cupped Diantha's cheek, running a thumb over her cheekbone, “and she will,” Diantha leaned in to the touch, “just as she always had.”

Looking up at Geeta, she finally, genuinely, smiled at her, “yeah…” she breathed out, a newfound hope in her bright blue eyes, “she will.”

Hand in hand, the two Champions bid goodbye to an old friend, Diantha's gaze lingered for a second, a moment, as if her Pokemon was truly there before her, then she turned her head back to Geeta. And finally they left, off to find the other Champions, off to head home.

~

Though within the rustling of leaves, of roses formed as crowns, of tiny Fletchling and Starly learning to fly, a creature with skin of deep slate and the brightest pink for its dress crooned softly at her fellow Pokemon. Hovering above the ground, she danced with the Vivillon, sang with the Chatot, her rose coloured gems glowing brightly underneath the warmth of the sun.

Giggling as she went, she flew over to a manor, long abandoned, but it was a place she knew by heart. Oh, her memories would flood from drizzling rain to heavy downpour, everyday she waits for her trainer. Her flying friends followed her to the gardens, to where her name was engraved on marble and obsidian. Although, a surprise in her step as the Starly and Chatot flew over the empty grave, gently pushing about the red and black capsule left on the grave. One of them flew over to her, giving her the small piece of paper from the flowers.

Reading the note, she crooned with joy that could reach the heavens, flying over to take the pokeball from her feathered friends, twirling around the air as it held the precious Cherish Ball like a lost treasure.

Oh the joy in her eyes, glancing at her friends, they knew she had waited for this day. With a small nod of encouragement, they flew off to the northern parts of the forest, a farewell they knew all too well, for they will see each other again.

The Pokemon with skin of deep slate, her once bright blue mane now a dress of the brightest pink, pressed the button of the Cherish Ball; the soft light emitting from it reflected off her gems, like a light to guide the lost within the darkness. But she wasn't lost anymore.

She was back home.
