Chapter 1: Crush.
Chapter Text
Divina Carson had always had a thing for her teammate a year below her. Something about the way she made her feel and she knew it too that the other girl felt it. She had been the captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch Team, when the guy that was originally there fell ill.
Nobody would take the position since they didn't want to be a captain.
But there was always something about her teammate Yoko Tanaka.
She walked away tending to the first years who were all looking quite lost on where to go. Jokingly arguing with some of the littlest ones for their height.
She loved working with kids for the year.
Divina smiled at Yoko as she walked in with her friends, the girl giving a smile back. She didn't want to admit she was delusional, but she was definitely delusional and she wouldn't mind staying that way.
The sort ceremony is mid way through when she caught eyes with Yoko again, her eyes landing on her gently and a small awkward wave. She did wave back, but the view was obstructed by the rising of everyone when Pugsley Addams got into Hufflepuff.
An Addams getting into Hufflepuff was absolutely unheard of. But the boy seemed lovely enough.
She got up early before this whole Triwizard tournament jazz was introduced so she could get ready to lead the new 1st years to their common room and dorms.
She remembered walking these halls for the first time. Aled Sinclair, a brother of Enid not failing to intimidate them all. He immediately dropped the act and mocked all the Hufflepuffs as they were scared shitless by him. God did she miss Aled, he had left when she was in third year.
But the school loved him, he was the golden boy but not one that used his privilege to his advantage, he loved people and did what was right.
The days passed and the classes were running smoothly, she didn't know how many times she found Byron Barclay, a first year Slytherin making prejudiced remarks against muggle born students.
It was already bad enough dealing with Bianca Barclay. But to add another brother to the mix, it was like adding fire with fire. She would be in for a lot this year, along with the other prefects who were already putting in complaints about a lot of the first years.
It was nearly like that every year.
She found herself wanting to talk about her crush, she was down bad and she couldn't be saying she wasn't. Talking it out would be easier and the person she would go to would be her twin brother, her other Braincell was probably the only person she could talk to about it to.
So the opportunity came as she dodged Yoko and her friends again. For the billionth time, she was sure she had gotten that longing glance from Yoko who definitely didn't try to show it in front of her friends.
God, Divina. You're delusional, she is not looking at you, she might not even be gay!
She approached the Gryffindor table, Kent talking to no one and eating by himself happily.
"So—"
"No." Kent said the minute she tried to sit down, obviously his food was more important than his twin sister.
"Seriously?"
"Yes, my food is very important. Sorry." Kent put his hand down and resumed eating, which she scoffed. If she told him it was about someone she liked, he would be all ears.
"If you don't want to hear about her… Then…"
He nearly dropped his fork as he knew immediately what she wanted to talk about to which she knew it would pique his interest. "Okay, okay, sit down tell me."
Divina smiled gratefully and sat down, and she didn't know how to start and she would have to be quiet about it because of the people nearby. Chewing her lip, her brother just continued eating till she would start as this was always how it started.
"So… Y'know the girl that's a beater for Hufflepuff?"
Kent spat out his food harshly, getting into a coughing fit. She didn't know if that reaction was good or bad, so she sat there till he stopped coughing dramatically which you could tell at that point it was put on.
"Okay, Yoko. Yes it's Yoko." She had hoped he wouldn't mock her.
"You're a Pedophile." Kent whispered.
Divina hit him hard on the shoulder, which he left out a laugh as he did so. "Come on, I'm having a laugh!"
"Piss off," Divina muttered, as she looked away from him for a moment. She knew he would give some immature reply to which she was right to assume so because he did.
"Right, seriously. I mean, she's a pretty girl; is she gay though?" He added, eventually putting down the spoon next to him and pushing his bowl away from what seemed to be gravy and mashed potatoes.
Kent's eyes were totally focused on her now, to which she was actually grateful for once he would sit down and listen to her.
That's the thing she was worried about, as she didn't know if Yoko was actually gay or not or if she was being friendly. Why is it that they're always friendly and straight? It's so hard to tell the difference between a gay girl and a straight friendly girl.
"I… I don't know."
"Ouch." Kent commented.
"I know, but she's pretty, cool, quite funny actually. This feels different than any girl I've gone out with before." Divina was sure sparkles were in her eyes the more she went on, appreciative that her sibling understood that this was her safe space, that she couldn't talk to anyone else about this.
"I mean, you could ask to hang out as friends? That would be a fantastic foundation, right? I mean she doesn't seem too awkward." Kent suggested.
"I'm not going to chase her! Who do you think I am?" Divina whispered, gritting it through her teeth.
"Divina Carson, do not tell me you're expecting her to ask you out! For crying out loud you need to make her interested in you! You truly are a numpty." Kent snapped, his voice dramatic enough to make her break seriousness through his little rant.
She whacked him again for calling her a numpty. To which he whacked her back. If she did it again it would not end and it would definitely end up them both duelling to take the piss out of each to which Thornhill would definitely be mad at her.
"Well, like it's hard to ask a girl out, you know that." She replied.
"Cry me a river, you're asking her a friend. Nothing more. She won't even know."
It wasn't the worst idea, however she didn't know how she was going to ask Yoko randomly. Because it wasn't very often they didn't interact outside of Quidditch.
She felt like Enid Sinclair was judging her every time she walked by, including the two boys which she had forgotten the name of.
"Fine. But if she says no, just know I'll use the killing curse on you and I'm being serious." Divina said it with utter seriousness. To which Kent rolled his eyes.
More days pass since the sort ceremony and the announcement of the Triwizard Tournament. She was thinking of putting her name in, but that was definitely not her type of thing. Death defying tasks were definitely not something she wanted to prepare for.
She was walking around, making sure that no one was doing anything they weren't supposed to. It was her duty in her free time to walk around and to take house points if people were acting out.
However, a person she didn't expect to approach her was the very girl she had been avoiding, due to the big ass crush she had on her.
Yoko Tanaka, in her righteous glory, approached her. She looked small and meek compared to when you saw her with friends. She was so beautiful.
Merlin's beard, the way her lips were so gentle, her nose curved so perfectly, her teeth to which the girl didn't show often and she would love to know why.
Her heart must've jumped. Because she stood there stuck to the ground.
"Hey Divina, I was wondering… We should get to know each other and I was thinking about coffee? Yeah? It's on me if you want it." She asked, her voice breaking Divina with each time she spoke. How could she be so perfect?
God, why was she like this?
"When and where?" She tried acting cool as a cucumber, folding her arms as a means to intimidate her which she wasn't trying very hard to do, she wanted to look good in front of her. This was her proper first impression off of the pitch, they genuinely did not speak outside of Quidditch.
She never really spoke with Enid, or Yoko, or Carmichael, or Gosworth or any of them. Sure they were a close knit group when practising, and maybe before games for breakfast strategizing, but that was it.
"Weathervane, maybe 5:30? Any day you can before the champions ceremony, yeah?" Yoko smiled, to which Divina was sure she was dropping her act of coolness.
"Maybe," To not be rude, she nodded and continued on. She was screaming internally as she reached out of Yoko's view.
Take that Kent! She was chasing her. As a friend, obviously. But it was still something, way more than she hoped for. She would definitely tell him later.
Oh my god, I'm going for coffee with Yoko.
It settled in her head, and to make sure no one was around she took a quick look before punching the air in excitement, for what seemed like forever. She was smiling like such a fool and she was acting all cool when there was no need.
Was she rude?
Merlin's beard, she hoped she wasn't. Whatever, it is what it is. She couldn't wait.
She then heard havoc coming from the 2nd year bathrooms to which she only realised again that she had responsibilities.
For fuck sakes.
Chapter 2: Coffee & Talk.
Summary:
"hanging out"
Chapter Text
They had decided the day after she asked that they would go for coffee, so at 4 she started to get on her clothes.
Spending so long to get ready was quite abnormal for her as she had always sort of just thrown on whatever but she was looking to look good.
Whatever it was, it was a want and not a need. She wanted to look good, she wasn't being forced by anyone, she just wanted to look good for Yoko. To who she hoped cared.
She felt nervous.
Why did she feel this nervous.
She couldn't remember if she had ever felt this way before, because choosing a shirt should not be this hard. She was happy that she lived in the Prefect living quarters and not normal ones as she would look abnormal, and it wasn't usually occupied seeing as most prefects didn't use it.
She finally felt like the jeans, white shirt and grey hoodie fit. It had the little yellow decal on the front over her heart, it said, "Quidditch Captain, Divina Carson"
Eventually she ended up in the Weathervane by herself waiting for a little while. She had already ordered a coffee with 3 shots of espresso. She barely ever went into Hogsmeade since it wasn't of interest to her.
She stayed in the castle as a means not to go far.
She watched the door closely, making sure she would be able to greet Yoko the minute she saw her.
Twiddling her coffee, she felt so nervous. This enormously huge feeling of sickness was a pool and she was swimming in it. Calming down was definitely the opposite of what she was doing. She acted so cool yesterday that she needed to try and appear the same way.
But she knew that wasn't going to happen as she was terrible at putting on a persona.
The dingy bell above the door for when a person walked in and she looked over in high hopes that it was Yoko.
To her delight it was.
She very quickly fixed her hair and stopped once Yoko saw where she was. She finally looked properly.
And Oh dear, Merlin's beard. How does she keep getting prettier? She had definitely done up her hain small bit, the curls being the best part she saw at first, she didn't hide her eyes and most importantly, you could see her smile the minute she started walking over.
She was in such a cute jean on jean outfit, with jeans, a white t-shirt and jean jacket. She looked absolutely breathtaking.
"Hey,"
"Hey! Sorry for not being earlier, Enid was talking to me about something; What did you order?" Yoko asked as she sat down in the booth next to the foggy windows from the cold outside.
"Coffee, what do you like?" Divina asked, she couldn't keep eye contact as Yoko couldn't stop looking her direction, so she took interest in the empty booth to the right across the way.
"I love hot chocolate, I'm not a coffee person, or tea for that matter." She added.
Divina noted this in her brain, as they would probably come here often if this were to be a regular thing.
"Seriously? Just hot chocolate?" Divina asked, amused.
"I know, it's a crime." Yoko mocked herself, the waitress came over with her notepad asking for an order as to what the girl had said before about her order.
Divina watched for a moment as hadn't had her attention on her, she was head over heels. She never knew that this was possible for just one person.
Conversation grew between them both, as Yoko asked some casual questions about family, school, prefect stuff, to which funny stories came up.
"Get this, so when I was elected Prefect last year. I was on duty cleaning up the broomstick cupboard, and I'm not shi— I'm not taking the piss right? The broomsticks attacked me when I was cleaning their bristles and you could hear me screaming for someone to help, I kid you not mate, the scariest part of my life."
Yoko had been laughing for the entirety of the story, she was actually on the verge of tears to which Divina felt very smug about herself as she had actually made her laugh. This girl just kept getting better as time went on.
She's had a crush on her since last year and to think that she stood there and did nothing about it, not even getting to know her was definitely a mistake.
The Quidditch teams always had parties but they would break into their own cliques. She wished that wasn't the way it was.
"Getting chased by a broom sounds like a nightmare." Yoko sipped her hot chocolate.
"It's a 10 out of 10 experience to be honest."
This got another laugh and she felt so warm and fuzzy that this was going successfully.
The waitress came over with the notepad to which they would be having Main Courses which were more desserts than anything.
"I'll have… Uh… Chocolate Fudge Cake." They both looked at each other since they both had said it at the same time, the waitress nodded and left. To which they both laugh at the coincidence.
Eventually after a bit of small talk, the two dishes arrive for them to devour.
"So are you thinking of putting your name in the cup?" Yoko asked after taking a few bites, wiping her mouth with a napkin.
"Yeah, I don't know, not for me. We're not as fearless as Gryffindors. My brother put his name in." Divina added, picking at the right piece of her cake, mixing it with the chocolate sauce and scooping it up eventually to eat it.
"I s'pose." Yoko replied in short.
"It'd be like putting you into the tournament or Enid or something, Hufflepuffs just aren't… Fit for that sort of thing."
"Totally agree, I could not see myself doing that at all, neither can I see Enid doing it ever, she um… Hates attention." Yoko smiled, before continuing to eat the piece of fudge cake she had left. She had gobbled it down in the first few minutes.
"Really? I would've thought that with Quidditch and stuff she liked it." That is what she assumed about Enid, since it was perfectly clear that she did like that spotlight at some points. She remembered that little 1st year getting on the Quidditch team due to a fight between her and someone else and her catching something like a whippet.
She heard so many stories and accounts from 1st years from then about what actually happened.
"Nope; She said she's glad she's too young to be in the tournament anyway. It's too dangerous."
"I agree. I don't even wanna try it."
"Honestly I can't wait to watch, it's gonna be a highlight, Enid and myself have decided that we'll try and find the best seats at each one." Yoko smiled at the mention of her best friend.
The thing about Hufflepuffs is that they valued people so dearly and loyalty was an underlying aspect as Divina could tell that Enid was a big part of her life and she spent a lot of her time with her.
It was truly an admirable trait.
They went on to talk more frequently for the next few days. She sometimes sat with Yoko's friends. Her own mates, being the very few friends she had, knew exactly what was up teasing her, even though she barely spoke to them anyway.
She didn't know what to do most of the time, as she had always been told by her friends that liking her was a waste of time but if she wanted to she could.
Divina of course saw no waste of time in Yoko, the girl seemed nice enough and she was a good conversationalist when you did get to know her being able to talk about anything was a trait she loved in people.
She was so caught up in her little crush she had forgotten Prefect duty yesterday which was to patrol the bottom dungeons at midnight, it was to check if any students from the Slytherin and Hufflepuff common room were sneaking around.
When she was walking around checking the bathrooms for any year, creeping around where they weren't supposed to be. She slowly approached the 2nd floor to go to the great hall to get a start on dinner.
Gryffindor and Raveclaw Prefects take the top floors and try to catch out any smart or brave souls. Apparently last week there was a 1st year boy from Gryffindor who had managed to break up the trophy room with a firecracker.
"Divina! Wait up!" Kent, her brother came up quickly, looking as though his hair was just burnt to a crisp, he put his wand against his hair and let it regrow, a small lopsided smile on his face.
"Everything okay?" She mused with a teasing smirk, her brother rolling his eyes.
"1st year trying to do Leviosa, instead of lifting a feather he lifted my hair and burnt it." Kent put his wand securely back into his pocket, following his sister in.
"So… How is she." Kent asked.
Divina went red, and stopped in her tracks. Instinctively hitting him on the shoulder. Hard.
"Shush."
"Come on, tell me all the goss, treat me like one of your stupid best friends." Kent teased, she rolled her eyes and continued to walk into the great hall.
"You're more my friend than they are."
"Exactly why you should tell me! You came to me first." Kent went in front of her walking backwards as if this was going to stop her from going to dinner and it would most likely end with him bumping into something.
She stopped for a moment, heaving a deep sigh.
Giving that annoyed look to tell him stop or else this will end up in them arguing. Her sisterly look didn't seem to affect him as he still looked like the same brother who was asking to use her training broom.
"Come onnnnn." Kent pleaded for any type of details. His very whiny voice doing her head in. She shoved him out of the way forcefully to which he wobbled and was nearly knocked off balance she seated herself finally and grabbed a plate, the food would be served soon.
"Sit."
Her brother sat, his pearly white eyes lighting up.
She sighed, this was going to be unbearable. "We've been hanging out for a little bit talking and getting to know her. But, I don't know if it's gonna go anywhere."
"I could listen in on their conversations, try and figure it out?" Typical that Kent was always up for mischief. She didn't want to intrude on any private conversations that the group was having. Because not everything was about her and they could find out something they weren't supposed to hear.
"No, but thank you. I hope she likes me, it would be nice." Divina smiled a small bit, Kent smiling in reply but she could see the small empathy as he did, rooted so subtly in his eyes.
"I told you that all you needed to do was talk to her."
"Hm."
She knew that he was right to think she was chasing something blindly, all she knew is that this was a leap of faith.
A leap of faith that could end in disaster.
However it didn't bother her if it ended in disaster. She would find someone else. Well not everyone was gay at Hogwarts, but she would find someone.
Someone to fill the deep dark void that was being torn apart by the fact that someone she had liked for a long time didn't like her back.
She would longingly watch the girl for days, always laughing with her friends and Divina would go red when she did so. The beauty of someone when they're not trying for anyone is when someone is the most beautiful.
Divina watched from afar as the girl kept her eyes, and kept her attention. She found herself always watching her. Kent would mock her if he knew how much she did this, she wasn't ashamed. How could you blame her? When a girl is that pretty.
Internally she was freaking out.
But externally she was as cool as a cucumber or so she thought anyway.
God she was a mess.
