Post season 3. Outsider POV. Heroin addict Cosette is possessed by a succubus. Sam saves her then suffers withdrawal from demon blood. She tries to help. Ruby finally arrives and Cosette sees everything. Story ends two years later with Cosette finding out Sam has died. Hints that he’s the father of her son.

I usually just read fics about my favourite pairings, but this wonderful gen!fic gem sucked me in with its excellent perspective of coping-being-human!castiel and how Dean would deal (or rather, not deal) with Sam being physically and then mentally gone. There's some absolutely great AU!world-building with spot-on characterisation and realistic detail of everyday domestic life. Plus a hopeful ending that makes me smile :)
