Summary:

After Scott and Stiles break Theo's curse, they were freed from the chains of immortality. They live their final lifetime together until they're old men and they fade together.

This fic is one of two potential extended endings for the Ab Aeterno series, following the Scott and Stiles are mortals idea.

This work is inspired by the original Ab Aeterno series by Rune and Dans. Thank you both for such an amazing series that inspired me.

Work Text:

When Scott and Stiles killed Theo and broke the curse, they unshackled themselves from its magic as well. This would be their final lifetime. Scott welcomed it. He looked forward to growing old. He looked forward to finally getting to grow old with Stiles instead of just watching him grow old while he stayed the same.

Scott and Stiles got married as soon as they could. They never got the chance when they should have, back in Scott’s kingdom, so they were going to make sure they got the chance now. Scott used a good bit of his stashed pirate booty, which was essentially limitless, to make sure they had the perfect wedding and reception. He spared no expense. Their wedding was the talk of the town for weeks leading up to it and weeks after it had happened. Malia still couldn’t believe that Stiles actually ended up marrying someone he drug into an interrogation room and went on about how sure she was that this would cause her a lot of headaches and paperwork some day. But she did admit they looked like a good match. She whispered to Scott in private that she was really only complaining to give Stiles a hard time. Malia was surprised when Scott smirked and told her to keep it up.

Scott and Stiles bought a modest house in Beacon Hills. Stiles didn’t want to give up his position on the police force. Scott didn’t mind. It would be nice to actually stay in one place like a normal person for once. It gave him a sense of stability Scott hadn’t had in a very long time.

They made sure to take vacations together as often as they could, taking trips out to nearby beaches or going camping or hiking or to a cabin up in the mountains. They even made that cross country road trip Stiles had always wanted to do. It didn’t really matter what they did or where they went, just as long as they were together.

When they weren’t vacationing and they were actually in Beacon Hills, they were incredibly domestic. They cuddled on the couch or their bed and watched movies or TV shows. Sometimes they just lounged around the house or on each other. Typically in various stages of undress.

Scott handled all the cooking. He let Stiles cook something once and they both nearly died of food poisoning. Scott reminded Stiles, between vomiting and dry heaves, that he wasn’t immortal and he really shouldn’t try to test that fact. Stiles apologized profusely. There was a good bit of make-up sex after they both stopped feeling like death.

One day, Scott was looking at himself in the mirror and he suddenly shouted in excitement. His shout startled Stiles who flailed as he fell out of bed, cursing as he got up.

“What the hell was that about?” grumbled Stiles as he walked up to Scott.

“I have a gray hair!” exclaimed Scott with exuberance.

Stiles gave Scott a are-you-fucking-kidding-me look.

“That’s what you shouted about?” asked Stiles. “I thought you were dying or something.”

“You don’t get it, Stiles! This is exciting!”

“Yeah, congrats, Scotty. You’re old as fuck now.”

Scott turned to face Stiles, a huge grin still plastered on his face.

“Stiles, I’m well over a thousand years old at this point, but I’ve never had a gray hair. This is my first one,” explained Scott. “Do you get it now? This is new to me. It means I’m getting older. It means I’m not stuck to be the same age forever. I’m mortal.”

“Y’know, most people wouldn’t like to be reminded that they’re mortal,” said Stiles, smiling in spite of himself.

“Most people haven’t been through what I have.”

“True. Well, don’t worry, Scotty. I’ll still love you when you’re old and gray.”

“Good.”

Scott planted a kiss on Stiles lips, wrapping his arms around Stiles’ waist.

“I love you, Stiles,” said Scott.

“I love you, too, my king,” said Stiles.

The two of them found their way back to their bed, tangled up in each other. They didn’t leave again til later that evening.

Time passed and now Scott and Stiles were both old men, starting on their nineties. They’d spend their entire lives together just like they’d always dreamed of. They looked back on their time together with great fondness. They had both lived good and full lives now that they’d found each other. They had no regrets as the twilight of their lives rapidly approached the inevitable night of death.

“You know,” said Stiles as they lay on their bed one night. “I’m not sad this is my last lifetime.”

“Oh?” asked Scott, mildly surprised. “Why not?”

“Because I finally got to spend it with you like I always wanted. Like we always wanted. And I got to do it while knowing the truth about us.”

“And you’re not sad that time is coming to an end? That we won’t find each other in another life?”

Stiles shook his head slowly. His strength had been waning lately as had Scott’s.

“No,” answered Stiles. “I’m okay with this. I just want to spend what time I have left by your side. Like I said, I’ll always be at your side, my king.”

“And I’ll always be at your side, Stiles,” said Scott. “Until the very end.”

They sat in silence for a few minutes, just holding each other’s hands.

“I’m very tired,” said Scott.

“Me, too,” said Stiles. “We should get some sleep.”

“I get the feeling this may be the last time,” said Scott calmly.

“You think?” asked Stiles, unphased by Scott’s words.

“Yeah, so, Stiles, will you hold me one more time?”

Stiles smiled, bemused that Scott thought he actually had to ask for such a thing.

“Of course, Scott. My king. My best friend. My brother. My love,” said Stiles. “Always.”

Scott smiled even though Stiles couldn’t see it. He pressed as closely to Stiles as he could.

“Thank you, Stiles,” said Scott. “For everything.”

“I should be thanking you, Scott,” responded Stiles. “You’ve done so much for me. Sacrificed so much for me. Thank you, Scott.”

“It was always worth it.”

“I couldn’t agree more.”

Scott and Stiles’ hearts beat as one as they lay curled together on the bed. They had always been in sync since the moment they met as kids and that hadn’t stopped even after all these years. As they drifted off to sleep together, their breathing synced up as well. After a few minutes, their lungs exhaled their last breaths and their hearts beat out the final beats before coming to a rest. Scott and Stiles left the world together.

Scott and Stiles’ eyes fluttered. They were still holding each other, but they weren’t in their bed anymore. They weren’t sure where they were. Had they failed? No, that couldn’t be it. They were young again somehow. They were both very confused by this.

Then they noticed a positively radiant and regal woman standing before them. She was dressed in gorgeous royal attire, but it was clear that she had a very prominent natural beauty. She smiled warmly at them as a golden light danced behind her. Scott and Stiles recognized her immediately. She was Queen Melissa. When she spoke, it was in Scott and Stiles’ native tongue.

“I’ve been waiting for you for such a long time, Scott. And you, too, Stiles,” said Melissa. “Welcome home, my dear boys. I’ve missed you so.”

Scott and Stiles both scrambled up and dove into Melissa’s open arms and she pulled them both into a tight embrace. Scott couldn't hold back his tears. He remembered when he’d forgotten his mother, but here she was, waiting for him.

“I’ve missed you so much, mom,” sobbed Scott. “I tried… I tried my best. I let our people down. I-”

“Shhh,” cooed Melissa. “You did nothing wrong, Scott. You did your very best and I am so proud of you. You stopped Theo. You found Stiles. And, most importantly to me, you were finally happy. That’s all I ever truly wanted for you, my son.”

Scott just nodded as he clinged to his mother.

“I’m sorry, too, my queen,” said Stiles. “For getting Scott into so much trouble over the years. For causing all this. For everything.”

“Not you, too, Stiles,” sighed Melissa, her patient smile never wavering as she held her boys. “This isn’t your fault either. And Scott wouldn’t be the same person he is without you. You two were always meant to be together.”

“Thank you, Queen Melissa,” said Stiles.

“You boys had quite an adventure and quite a life together, far more than anyone else could ever hope for,” said Melissa. “You’ve more than earned your rest. Now, come with me.”

She released them and turned to walk towards a set of enormous wooden double doors. The dancing golden light had been coming from door. Scott took Stiles’ hand and they followed Melissa through the doors, creaking as she pushed them open.

As they passed through the doorway, Scott and Stiles recognized the room they had just entered. It was the grand hall and court of Scott’s palace. It was then that Scott noticed their clothes had changed. Scott was wearing his royal robes and crown and Stiles bore his armor, complete with Scott’s royal emblem. They shared a brief look of surprise, but then smiled, never letting go of each other’s hands as they walked through the room behind Melissa.

The room was packed with people. Scott scanned the faces of the crowd. He recognized many of them. They were people from his past lifetimes. Peasants whom he had ruled, the brothers of the monastery, Alistair and his pirate crew, Isaac, the countless soldiers he’d worked on, and even Tom and Malia. Scott’s original court waited for him by the thrones. Everyone had been waiting for him.

When Melissa reached the thrones, she stopped and turned to face Scott and Stiles. she gestured to the king’s and queen’s thrones before moving to the side to stand with the rest of the court.

Scott and Stiles turned to face the crowd. Scott looked at Stiles to find him already smiling goofily at him. Scott smiled back and raised their hands before they took their seats. When they sat, the room erupted in cheers, shouts, and applause. Everyone was happy to have them back where they belonged. It felt right. Scott was home like he was always meant to be, with Stiles at his side. Scott stole a glance at his mother who simply smiled and nodded at him.

Scott leaned over and kissed Stiles on the lips, his crown tilting over and becoming lopsided on his head in the process. The crowd’s cheering intensified, but neither Scott nor Stiles even heard it. They were together and all was right with the world.
