Chapter Text
Cale had trouble understanding his surrounding. He woke up, but he had not opened his eyes. He felt weird. He felt something was wrong. His bed was not this soft or comfortable. He had let go of such comfort long ago, especially after the apocalypse happened. To prove his intuition, he slowly opened his heavy eyelids.
An unfamiliar canopy was above him.
The room was dark although the sun already rose up.
His upper body felt itchy, especially around his neck.
He tried to sit up, but something held him back. Something wrapped around his torso. Anxiety and fear crept into him immediately. Cale craned his head to the side. His breath hitched and his eyes widened in shock.
Someone lay beside him. Someone whose face and characteristics Cale could not forget.
Shining blond hair and long blond eyelashes immediately in his sight. The handsome face that had been his partner in life was very close to his own. The high nose, the balanced lips with a pinkish hue, and the sharp jawline.
Cale was frightened to see this man again.
Crown Prince Alberu Crossman was hugging him during sleep. In his memories, there’s only one time Crown Prince Alberu did this to him.
Taking a better look, both he and Alberu wore gowns instead of comfortable pajamas. He smelled the subtle smell of wine that was his favorite from Alberu’s mouth.
Then, everything clicked. His brain remembered this exact experience. His chest rippled in discomfort. He knew very well where and when was this,
He woke up on Alberu’s bed, the day after their marriage ceremony.
His lips trembled, body froze from the inability to process what just happened.
‘…did I just come back to this world?’
As he asked that to himself, worried thoughts started to soar in his head.
What happened to his life as Kim Rok Soo? What will happen to his job? His colleagues? The monsters? How? Why? Another peculiar experience with time? Did he die in sleep or he’s sucked into the novel that was telling stories about this world?
Whatever the question was, the answer remained the same.
There’s no answer.
Cale was no clairvoyant. After living as Kim Rok Soo for 36 years old, he no longer wished to entangle himself with troublesome affairs. He’s tired of working and wanted to retire early. He wanted to slack off and live in peace.
Furthermore, he’s just a weak person without political power. The Prince consort’s position was just a supporter of the Crown Prince. Not to remind he’s a spouse who could not give an heir to the Crown.
In the middle of a chaotic mind, the bed dipped more and moved. Crown Prince Alberu mumbled something and opened his sleepy eyes. Sky blue eyes were staring back at him with confusion, then dawned in realization before that eyes curled up like a crescent moon.
“Good morning, Cale. Did you sleep well?”
What a well-practiced line. It’s still the formal voice that plagued his mind for years of decades. Even as Kim Rok Soo, sometimes, he still recalled it as if it was just yesterday.
If this was his first life, Cale would smile back. Although their marriage was arranged and political purposes, Cale actually didn’t hate Alberu back then. He’s actually trying to live differently. Not as trash Cale, but just Cale.
That initial plan backfired on him because he ended up falling in love with Alberu and met his end miserably.
This third life—probably the second if he’s not dead as Kim Rok Soo, Cale didn’t know what kind of face he showed to Alberu. However, the Crown Prince’s forehead creased slightly.
“Do you feel sick, Cale?”
A hand reached his forehead. A warm, big palm on his forehead was checking his temperature.
“You’re not having fever, but you look pale. Should I call the royal doctor for you?”
The man that talked alone released his arm from Cale’s torso and sat up. Their gaze broke as Alberu swung his leg over the bed, ready to call the servant.
Finally, a voice came out from Cale.
“No.”
His voice was dry.
“Hmm?” Alberu turned his head.
Still laying on the bed sideways, Cale stared at Alberu.
“I don’t need a doctor. I’m completely fine.”
Alberu seemed to not believe him. The Crown Prince obviously heard his shaky and raspy small voice. However, what held Alberu back was the stern look on Cale.
“Alright, if you say so.”
Moments later, the maids and servants entered the bedroom. Cale was correct. Today was the day after their marriage ceremony, 5th month in the 780 years of the Felix Calendar.
The maids' and servants’ scared expressions were familiar to him as they were they ones who served him at the beginning. While Alberu was led to his own bathroom, Cale was led to another bathroom in the next room that was connected to this room.
It was his own bedroom, the quarter of the Prince Consort and soon Royal Consort once Alberu ascended as King.
Resting his head on the edge of the bathtub, Cale stared at the ceiling as he calmed himself.
The nostalgia crawled on his skin like invisible tendrils. As this place was where he resided until his death Cale could not help but feel comfortable albeit he knew the attack happened in his own room.
After accepting the truth, Cale felt much calmer than ever. Although it’s much better to return before his marriage, actually returning during the newlywed time was already great. He had a bigger chance to avoid his death.
His goal this time was different.
Instead of pursuing Alberu, trying to join the politic he hated, and kept acting like trash and tarnishing Alberu’s image, Cale decided to not be involved at all.
He’ll be as silent as ever like a ghost. Alberu could do his job without worrying about him. Much better if that crown prince forgot about him soon or later.
Cale already experienced the worst of the worst as Cale Crossman and Kim Rok Soo.
So, this time, he’ll try to slack off and get his peaceful life. Prince Consort's status was able to do that.
A smile plastered on his lips as he thought about his plan. He could be damn about scared servants. His trashy image was still strong, but that made things easier because it meant fewer people wanted to find trouble with him. At least before Alberu’s power increased again.
Before that time came, Cale had to find a way to protect himself. He hated pain and death. He’ll use the novel’s information to his advantage. He didn’t want to experience the same suffering as his first life again.
Glancing to the other side, he stared emptily at the mirror. His red hair was something he was very proud of. It’s the only legacy of his late mother. His reddish-brown eyes remained the same with a deeper gaze. When it caught the red spots around his neck and his shoulder, he frowned.
‘I know Alberu didn’t have any interest in me, but to think he asked for a small amount of aphrodisiac to induce his sexual desire just for our first night is sickening.’
Cale felt betrayed when he found out about it throughout the novel. It would be much better if Alberu was open to him and said no to the consummation because in the end, he never did it to the end.
Their consummation night was not complete.
All Alberu did was tell Cale that he’ll do it enough to not arouse suspicion. And that was by leaving hickeys on him.
No more, no less. That calculating Crown Prince bastard took the lead and stopped when he deemed it was enough, then told Cale to sleep.
Back then, due to his trashy image, Cale thought Alberu was considerate of him knowing his weak constitution, and also because he’s disgusted with him.
Now he’s all grown up, despite his lack of experience in relationships, he understood that Alberu was taking advantage of his trashy image to blame on him if one day they’re exposed to not complete the night consummation.
‘Cale didn’t want to do it, so I stopped.’
People would believe Alberu who’s well-known for his kind heart rather than a trashy young master who was always drunk and suddenly rose up to prince consort’s rank thanks to King Zed.
If this was known to the public, Alberu had a bigger chance to annul their marriage. Cale knew Alberu didn’t find him interesting. For Alberu, he’s just a useful pawn.
Oh, how aggravated and contemptuous Cale was as he recalled the memories.
“That fucker. I’ll make your job easier by making less interaction between us. I also don’t want anything with you this time.”
Cale punched the water, making it splashed to the floor. His anger was clear that he had to cool down before dried himself.
Outside, he saw the servants were ready with variants of clothes for him to choose from. Since he became Kim Rok Soo, his preference changed a lot.
He just stopped frowning and now he frowned again at the design. It was too extravagant for his taste now. ‘…well, my face makes everything works…’
“Hans, I want the simplest one today.”
“Yes, Young— sorry, Prince Consort.”
Hans was the deputy butler from Henituse that now served him as a personal butler. Personally, Cale wanted Ron to come with him, but that old man was too skilled to leave the estate.
It’s unfortunate, but they soon meet again because of Hero Choi Han.
At that time, Cale could speak to him again.
He was dressed in a simple white frilly dress shirt, dark gray pants, and jacket, then black knee-length boots. It’s been so long since he wore these kinds of clothes yet his simplest attire was very luxurious.
Hans helped Cale attach the brooch and crest on the chest, styling his red hair and completing the outfit with a soft vanilla fragrance.
During the time Hans helped Cale dress up, Cale noticed the eyes were looking at him. Especially around his neck and shoulder.
The maids and servants talk. Although they’re scared of him, they were making sure the first night happened and Alberu cheated by using the loopholes.
As long as the nobles and King heard, everything was safe.
Cale was led back to Alberu’s room. Everything was in place as he remembered. The bed sheet had changed. The warm and damp bathroom air from Alberu’s bathroom. The simple and expensive breakfast near the balcony for them.
Alberu already sat on the table in his royal attire. As soon as their eyes met, the Crown Prince smiled and stood up.
He pulled the chair across him for Cale.
“You look pretty, Cale.”
Bullshit. Cale knew better than an empty compliment. For Alberu, talking sweetly was like second nature. He took a seat and stared at the easy-digest food instead of Alberu who was standing behind him.
Alberu returned to his seat, sitting straight, and spoke.
“Greasy food is not good for your health after an exhausting day. So I prepared salad, soup, and steamed food for our first meal.”
Cale glanced at Alberu briefly. If it was him in the past, he would utter exaggerating shady compliments for Alberu’s considerate manner; like ‘Thank you, Your Highness. I hope this food is not trash.’ Or ‘This food is surprisingly a bit delicious. They need to make more effort.’
However, Cale was done with that phase. He took the glass of water, sipping it. “Thank you, Your Highness.”
It was direct and flat, far from his trashy image. Alberu seemed not expecting this reaction as he took some time to respond.
“You must be really tired. You don’t have energy in your voice. Eat a lot, Cale.”
“Yes, Your Highness.”
The breakfast was peaceful—silent, if others may say. Alberu was glancing at him occasionally while Cale ate his portion heartily. At least, he didn’t hate the food. He missed the times he ate such luxurious food like this.
As Kim Rok Soo, he mostly ate fast food and eating out that’s quick to finish due to his job may be interrupted by emergency calls. He didn’t have the luxury to enjoy the food.
That’s why he didn’t realize his expression softened, a subtle smile spreading on his lips. It’s really good to eat without interruption.
Cale could ignore Alberu’s and the servants’ presence. He ate until he was full, thanking for the food internally.
“It’s time for me to start working,” Alberu said, chair skidded as he stood up. “You may rest today, Cale. We can’t have you get sick right after living here. Ask the servants if you need anything.”
Cale nodded, waving his hand casually. “Alright. Have a nice day.”
Habit died hard. Cale still waved the way he bid goodbye to Alberu before his death. The Crown Prince smiled at him before leaving with his aides.
“……”
‘First thing first, avoiding is not a good thing. I better change my reaction to the soon occurring events.’
Cale returned to his own room, requesting paper and pen, dismissing everyone including Hans. He told them to wait outside.
He then started writing down important events.

Chapter Text
Cale burnt the paper he wrote on earlier to the fireplace. He didn’t want anyone to see what he wrote despite he’s writing in Hangul.
‘I remember everything, after all.’
Cale, as Kim Rok Soo, had a great memory. He had no difficulty in memorizing and understanding complex material. After recalling the novel, Cale was more certain now. The author’s perspective was focusing on Crown Prince Alberu and Hero Choi Han. He’s indeed just an extra character around Alberu that had no purpose other than a hostage between Henituse County and the Crossman Royal family.
The author's name made Cale scoffed other than his role that’s not important for the story. They used initials or code as it’s only two letters.
CH.
CH as Cale Henituse?
CH as Choi Han?
Why would the author’s name have the same initial as his name? Well, not anymore. He’s a Crossman now.
It was afternoon when Cale was done writing about important events. His door was knocked again. Hans entered with worried and nervousness.
“Young master, the aide of His Highness came again just now.”
Cale already knew what’s the news and he let Hans continue.
“He delivered the message that His Highness is unable to have dinner with the young master tonight. He apologizes and wishes for the young master to not skip dinner.”
Hans was sweating bullets as he informed to Cale. The reason was simple. At noon, Alberu’s aide came with the same news, that Alberu was too busy to have lunch together. Hans was afraid that Cale might be upset and vent his anger to him.
Fortunately for Hans, he’s not the same Cale as before. He’s more cold-headed and didn’t think much of this. “I understand. Bring my dinner here later.”
The ginger-haired butler was surprised by the flat reaction Cale gave to him. The young master also had not asked for his usual wine either. He was anxious that Cale planned something behind him that might harm himself and Crown Prince Alberu.
“E-eh, you will eat here, young master?”
Cale allowed Hans to keep calling him ‘young master’ because Hans kept getting the wrong addressing him and Cale didn’t want to hear awkward ‘Prince Consort’ came from this butler. Furthermore, that title held more mocking experience than dignity and honor.
Once Hans saw the scowl and frown on Cale’s face, he backed away and scurried off from the room. “I will tell the chef.”
“Hans, bring my usual favorite wine two bottles later.”
Hans flinched at the demand, but he nodded. “As you wish, Young Master Cale.”
Night came quickly and Cale spent his time alone reading books. The dinner was served in his private bedroom. The food still didn’t consist of greasy food and Cale hoped today was the last meal without red meat.
Hans poured the Henituse wine into the empty glass. Cale internally sighed when he noticed the shaky hands and anxious look on that butler’s face. He started eating soup in silence, completely ignoring the scared servants who stood meters away from him. Their head all bowed down yet Cale still felt their nervousness.
At moments like this, Cale really thought he’s successful in being a menace for society. He’s a trashy young master that’s feared by people and Alberu held the gold medal for taming him after getting married to him. Alberu was pitied by many people for having him as his spouse.
Cale drank another bottle of wine after finishing his dinner. His flushed face made Hans and the servants alerted. To their surprise, Cale waved his hands with the usual scowl on his face.
“Except Hans, all of you go away.”
And so, Hans was forced to stay with drunk Cale —from their point of view, while the others bowed deeply and bid goodbye to him. They quickly went, leaving Hans alone with panicked thoughts.
However, Hans was a competent butler. He’s one of the best candidates as the next head butler back when he’s a Deputy Butler at Henituse Estate. He quickly collected himself and stay alert in case young master Cale started to break things. He could not make Cale break the palace’s property like in the Henituse territory.
Cale, obviously, knew what Hans thinks and he thought this was funny. In his previous life, Hans had proved himself loyal and useful. He pledged his allegiance to Cale and protected him from many attacks. Cale was so grateful yet he didn’t have ways to pay back the butler due to his image and stubbornness. Might as well be foolish.
And so, to ease this competent butler’s burden, Cale decided to have a proper talk with Hans.
“Hans, how did you get picked to be my butler instead staying at Henituse Estate?”
The ginger-haired butler looked confused. But he still answered with honesty.
“While the first decision was Mr. Ron as he’s Young Master’s servant, Lord Henituse thought that working in the palace might be unsuitable for him. It would be hard because of his age and he has to be separated from his son, Beacrox. There’s more consideration, but Young Master’s father thought a younger person was a better choice in case Young Master needs a companion.”
‘Companion, huh…’
Cale never heard this story. He knew his father loved him, but not showing it physically. That’s why the barrier between them got thicker over the years.
When the marriage proposal came, Count Deruth Henituse was enraged. Cale had not seen his father got that angry before. He was ready to do treason if his wife didn’t hold him back. With that rage, Deruth settled with King Zed regarding the order of the arranged marriage.
He didn’t know how Deruth managed to negotiate the prenuptial marriage contract, but the main reason Cale was able to stay as Alberu’s husband without being afraid dragged down was this.
The reason Cale was chosen as Alberu’s spouse was that the King wanted Henituse to support Crown Prince Alberu. He wanted to tie the wealthy neutral Golden Turtle to Alberu to secure his spot as the future King.
Lily was too young, Basen was the supposedly next Lord, and the trashy first young master was the one with such freedom.
The prenuptial marriage contract stated that Party B, Cale Henituse, should be Party A, Alberu Crossman’s legal spouse, and be treated as well as he’s part of the Royalty family.
Cale read the clauses that were leaned to his advantage rather than Crown Prince Alberu. Once the invitation spread to the nobles, Cale heard the rumors.
The nobles thought he’s at most would be Crown Prince Alberu’s concubine because he’s not a woman who could bear an heir for the Crown. They were ridiculing him and said that this was his karma for being a terrible son of Count Henituse; because being a male concubine was not a good thing. If a woman concubine already got a bad reputation, much more than the male one.
They protested when they found out Cale Henituse would be the Prince's Consort; which meant, no Princess Consort or Crown Princess until Alberu became a King. That was the case. Especially when they heard the King was the one who initiated this.
The sharp nobles immediately noticed King Zed’s plan on making Alberu ascend to the throne. They’re all supporting the Second and Third Prince yet those princes would not be the King.
How devastated they were when they realized their efforts and hard work currying favor the princes they supported resulted in failure?
This was the start of hatred for him and the long story behind their wishes for him to die.
Cale brushed off the past memories and returned to face Hans.
“Are you going to work as best as you can like at the estate, Hans?”
Hans stiffened because Cale had a sly smile with a red face. He wondered if Cale was drunk talking.
“Yes, sir! I’m going to work as hard as I’m at Henituse Estate!”
Cale was satisfied with the answer. “Great, you passed the interview.”
Hans was taken aback. “Eh? What interview?”
It was then Hans noticed the different gaze in his young master’s eyes. The hazy eyes became clear. Cale stared at him with a stoic expression. He put down the wine bottle on the table, then pointed at himself; hand on his chest.
“As my father wishes, you will be my first companion,” Cale started. He looked confident and far from the drunkenness that he’s always portrayed. “And I, Cale Henituse, don’t want anything to do with the Royalty. Keep this in your mind, Hans.”
Hans held his breath. This was a side he never saw from his young master. Cale was serious. His voice and his demeanor spoke that.
As a butler from Henituse, he’s loyal to Lord Henituse, and Young Master Cale already gave him the answer.
‘You will be my first companion.’
Hans understood this and although this was weird, he put his hand on his left chest and bowed. “As you demand, sir.”
“Good.”
Hans lifted his head, stealing a glance at the young master. Cale was smiling. It looked cocky to others, but Hans saw it as confidence. He smiled in return, beaming in relief.
“May I ask, Young Master Cale?”
“Sure, go ahead.”
“I understand about me being the young master’s companion, but what about ‘doesn’t want anything to do with the Royalty’?”
Cale grabbed the wine bottle again, smirking. “Literally as I said. I'm not a Prince Consort because I want this. Might as well use this chance to use this status’ advantage.” He drank the wine, feeling great as the wine he missed for decades was in his grasp again.
“Eeh?!”
Hans was half-screaming. Cale found his reaction like a Japanese person. He chuckled, drinking the rest wine until it was empty.
“Why are you shocked? I’ve never been one that’s tied by strict rules. You know how I’ve been.”
“That’s true, but, we’re in the capital. We’re living in Crown Prince’s palace!”
Cale was amused by Hans reaction. He didn’t change. He’s the one that had the guts to talk like this to him aside from Ron that talked to him professionally.
“Hans, it’ll be fine. The Crown Prince is not a bad person.”
Yes, generally, Alberu was not a bad person. It depended on what facade he had and mostly, that prince didn’t do any harm to him whatever happened.
“I know His Highness is kind and rational, but you’re now his spouse. How can you’re not get involved with the Royalty?!”
One thing Cale had to complain, Hans was a talkative person. He shrugged, telling Hans to prepare the bath. The butler did with slight confusion and worries, and Cale ignored him.
The second day he relaxed in the bathtub, Cale sorted his plan now that Hans officially joined him. He felt much better after being dressed in comfy silk pajamas. He’s ready to sleep in his own bed chamber until Hans reminded him to wait for Alberu and sleep on Alberu’s bed when he’s already laying on the bed.
His sleepiness evaporated and he scowled at Hans.
“Hans… does it matter where I sleep?”
“It is, Young Master Cale! You’re now married to the Crown Prince. You should sleep in his room! It’s crucial in the beginning of marriage life!”
The ginger-haired servant nagged him. Cale was upset. The more he remembered his past, the more he’s embarrassed and wished to be able to forget it.
Cale remembered he’s reluctant to sleep on the same bed with Alberu, and he hated to wait. However, he still followed the etiquette that the newlywed couple had to get closer and intimate at the honeymoon phase.
Alberu and Cale never went on their honeymoon. They’re on the same page of ‘mind of your own business’. However, the way they behaved with that mindset was different.
Cale waited for Alberu’s return from work in the previous life. He didn’t drink as much as usual for courtesy, laying on the bed and couch, pondering around the big bedroom of the Crown Prince, only to receive news that Alberu would be late and no need to wait for him.
He’s really upset and disappointed because Alberu already skipped lunch and dinner. He felt ridiculous for waiting yet he’s reluctant to go sleep first. In the end, Cale waited. His stubborn personality and his high pride didn’t allow him to sleep.
Alberu returned to his room around 2-3 am, only to frown in confusion.
His husband, Cale, was still awake with a big scowl and hostility.
“I thought I’ve asked my aide to tell you no need to wait for me?”
Cale sneered at Alberu.
“Although this is an unwanted marriage, I still have to keep the tradition of newlywed.”
That second night was terribly bad. Cale didn’t want to waste his precious time over something that Alberu didn’t even think highly of. He remembered how complicated Alberu’s face was. He’s about to retort his words, yet the princely facade remained.
“I apologize, Cale. From now on, you don’t have to wait for me. I always return around this time. It won’t do you good for your health.”
Cale was suspicious, so he lay on the bed, but not sleeping. After a week, Cale confirmed that statement. The next week, Alberu offered Cale to sleep in his own bedroom.
He really didn’t want to repeat it. If he’s going to sleep in his own room as early as that, might as well be voluntary now.
“Hans, I’ve told you. I don’t want to get involved with Royalty. Why bother sleeping with His Highness when my room is already prepared?”
“Young Master… it’s really important. What’s good from servants' talk that you and the Crown Prince already sleep on different beds just after one night?”
“Let them be. I don’t care.”
“Young master…!”
Hans sounded desperate. Cale sighed, finally scolding the ginger-haired butler.
“Listen, Hans.” Cale sat on the bed, almost glaring at the butler. “This is a political marriage. We’re married and I don’t want to do my duty except for the public.”
Before Hans retorted his words, Cale added, “If His Highness needs me in his bed just for public image, he’ll tell me through his aide. Just like today.”
That’s what Alberu Crossman did in the past. He mostly ordered his aide instead of talking to him directly. In the modern world, it’s similar to a Boss asking people to contact him through the secretary.
Cale laid back on the back, turning his back on Hans.
“Young Master Cale, you can’t do this! At least you have to do your duty as Crown Prince’s husband!”
“No, if you care so much, just go as me and sleep on His Highness’ bed instead. Shoo, shoo!”
Cale waved his arms without looking at the panicked Hans.
“But, your image as trash will got worsened if this was known to the public. What will His Highness do if he didn’t see you in his bedroom?”
Cale was silent for a moment. As Hans thought he succeeded in persuading the young master, Cale sighed and voiced out something sternly.
“Hans, listen carefully.” He turned his head to look at his butler. “His Highness won’t care about me. His priority is not me, and will never be.”
Hans flinched at those remarks. He stared at the serious gaze that made him listen while stiff on the spot. He didn’t even feel this nervous when he’s talking with Lord Henituse.
“Knowing how he already skipped meals with me today, I bet he’s going to send his aide again to tell me not to wait.”
Of course, Cale was telling what actually happened in the past. But Hans who didn’t know that felt complicated. Crown Prince Alberu was someone with high responsibility. He fulfilled his duty with perfection. He didn’t allow his emotion to take over his decision.
Someone like that would not ignore his duty as a newlywed husband despite this being a political marriage, Hans thought.
Nobles didn’t get married because of love. There were some that were lucky, but the percentage obviously much lower.
So, hearing Young Master Cale said that with certainty, Hans had a hard time to retort back.
Cale turned his head again when Hans didn’t reply back.
“If you didn’t believe me, you stay awake and see if the aide visited around midnight.
Hans really wanted to believe his young master, but he also wanted to confirm whether the Crown Prince didn’t finish his work earlier. Thus, he stayed awake while Cale fell asleep.
To his surprise, what Cale said happened.
The same aide came again, telling the Prince Consort to not wait for His Highness. And Hans’ conflicted mind started to lean to his young master’s words. He thanked the aide and bid goodbye as the aide returned to Crown Prince’s office.
-o-
Alberu put down his pen, twisting his wrist to reduce the soreness. He had been working non-stop since morning and now it’s late night, passing midnight.
“Huuu…”
He leaned on the back chair, massaging his throbbing temple.
“Is everything done?”
“Yes, everything’s done.”
Alberu nodded while Tasha had a worried look on her face.
“What’s wrong, aunt?”
Tasha, Alberu’s closest aide and aunt had a hesitant smile.
“Alberu, you just got married yesterday.”
“Yes, so?”
The disguised Dark Elf sighed, shaking her head at her nephew’s simple reaction.
“You should not be working all day like this. You should spend time with Prince Consort Cale and sleep with him right now.”
Alberu was taken aback at her words. To be truth, after ordering Ben to tell Cale he would not be able to have meals together, he forgot about him. If Tasha didn’t remind him, he would not ask Ben to tell Cale to not wait for him and just sleep earlier.
“What if he’s still waiting for you although you already sent Ben? Although he’s a man, his role was your spouse. If he took the wife’s role, he should be awake now and waiting for you.”
Alberu frowned at that comment. To be honest, he felt a bit guilty if Cale was really waiting for him until late at night like this.
“Did he ask Ben about me?”
Tasha shook her head. “No.”
“Then he might not be waiting for me.”
“Alberu, still, go back to your room immediately. I’ll clean up the rest.”
Alberu sighed, listening to her’s stern voice.
“Alright, Auntie.” He stood up from his chair, feeling sore and numb from sitting too long. “Good night, Auntie.”
“Yes, have a good sleep.”
When Alberu entered his bedroom, the room was very dark. He lit up some magic orb and went to the walk-in closet area to take his pajama.
Passing his bed, he thought Cale was there and sleeping as he asked. But his bed was empty.
‘Huh? Where is he?’
Alberu was confused. He looked back at the couch, thinking Cale was fallen asleep on the couch while waiting for him. Again, it was empty.
Cale wasn’t in his bedroom.
Soon, his eyes darted to the door that connected his room to Cale’s. Just to be sure, he carefully opened the door and entered the dark room. He walked to the bed and sighed in relief.
Cale was there, sleeping alone while curling his body and clutching the blanket.
Alberu was relieved that Cale didn’t wait for him until now. He did have to apologize in the morning because he didn’t finish his work earlier and left Cale alone on his first day at the palace.
However, Alberu didn’t know why Cale slept in his own bedroom instead of sharing the bed with him. They’ve agreed to cooperate, ignoring the awkwardness and be professional for the public. He did have a plan to sleep separately after some time, but not immediately like this.
‘Is Cale Henituse upset for waiting? Did he misunderstand Ben’s words? Did he forget that a newlywed couple is supposed to sleep on the same bed?’
Alberu had many thoughts. Cale Henituse’s image was not good to the public. His marriage with trash Cale was frowned upon and many showed hostility to them. Some thought Cale didn’t deserve him, some thought this was a good chance to tame the loud, foolish, and ungrateful Cale Henituse.
Alberu had a different opinion. He admitted this marriage was too forced. King Zed agreed to declare his ascended to the throne if he got married to Cale Henituse from neutral Golden Turtle. For him who didn’t need to have children, he agreed.
His goal was right in front of his eyes. If political marriage would secure his throne position, why decline? And so, this marriage happened after the turmoil and threat from Count Henituse that’s enraged from having his first son snatched away by the Crown.
Alberu was amused to see his Royal Father yielded a lot for this marriage to happen. King Zed also declared that he’ll pass the throne to him next year’s spring during his speech, making this event more advantageous to him.
‘Should I move him to my bed, now?’
Alberu considered that choice was the correct move. It would not look good if the servants that were not under Tasha’s command saw them sleeping separately only after one night.
Everyone knew this was a political marriage, but he preferred to show the demeanor of a good husband that cared for his spouse. He may feel weird to have someone sleeping beside him after sleeping alone for his entire life. However, he’s now had a husband's role to fulfill.
‘I’ll apologize if he’s shocked when he woke up in the morning later.’
With that thought, Alberu pulled away the blanket that covered the redhead. He carefully slid his arms on Cale’s back and under the knees, carrying Cale as silently as possible.
Laying Cale on the left side, Alberu fixed the pillow and he laid on the right side. He closed his eyes after tucking both of them in the blanket.
The exhaustion and sleepiness brought him to slumber very quickly. Hours passed just like that and dawn came.
If usual, Alberu woke up automatically, this time he was awakened by a shriek beside him.
He jolted up with high alertness, thinking someone intruding into the room, only to be faced by a shocked Cale and a rude finger pointing at him.
"You, you...! Why are you here?!"
Alberu was dumbfounded, wondering why Cale looked at him like a ghost.
Chapter Text
A ghost.
Alberu was sure Cale’s shocked expression and his scream were akin to seeing a ghost. The problem was that Cale pointed at him, the crown prince.
Cale’s face was pale. His finger was trembling. He muttered incomprehensible words as he pointed at Alberu, who was thinking someone ambushing them.
“Why are you here?!”, was Cale’s shout just now.
Alberu then frowned very slightly, looking both high alert and worried. “Cale?”
Cale flinched at Alberu’s calling. His eyes widened hearing the confused tone. He observed the way Alberu glanced at his face, his rude pointing finger, then back to his face.
“What’s wrong? Why are you so shocked?”
Alberu didn’t try to lower the shaking finger. He was as perplexed as Cale who woke him up with a shriek. As he waited for a response, Cale calmed down and lowered his finger. He seemed to be very confused, head shaking side to side, then dawned with realization.
“Ah… Your Highness…”
“Yes. It’s me. Are you okay? Did you have a nightmare?”
Questions laced with worries of courtesy. The gentle look that’s far from genuine. And the composed demeanor Cale was very familiar with.
He took a deep breath, glancing right and left. This was not his bedroom, it’s the crown prince’s. He ignored the questions and responded.
“I’m sure I sleep in my own room last night. How did I end up sleeping here with you, Your Highness?”
Alberu’s eyebrows rose up slightly. “I carried you here because of that. Did you purposely sleep separately right away, Cale?”
He was confused last night. He was about to ask if Cale misunderstood his aide’s words on ‘no need waiting’, but Cale beat him first.
“Yes, Your Highness.”
The simple and firm statement managed to make Alberu frown deeper. This was not in his reasoning regarding Cale slept alone.
“Young Master Cale, we’ve agreed to cooperate in this marriage. Sharing bed in our early marriage life is one of them.”
Cale’s expression hardened. How could he forget this crown prince’s nature? Alberu was a perfectionist in all aspects and wanted everything under his control. Acting as a responsible and dutiful husband was one of them.
Cale knew it would be one week before Alberu offered to sleep separately and he didn’t want to argue with Alberu. ‘One week. Just like in the past, he’ll naturally push me further.’ Cale thought it would not be a problem, although it’s annoying.
“Are you going to break the contract just after one day, Young Master Cale?”
Cale clicked his tongue. Threatening him with that was useless. It’s just that Cale didn’t want to meddle with this. It’s wasting his precious time.
“Fine. I’ll sleep here. But I won’t wait for you. I’m going to sleep whenever I want.”
Alberu had no problem with that. He’s going to tell Cale that later, so this was good.
“Alright. As long as you behave.”
That meant was not trashing around in the palace. Alberu agreed to let Cale drink as usual, but not with breaking property, and had to show a good demeanor in public.
Cale refrained from scowling. He turned away, swinging his leg over the bed, and get off.
“Where are you going?” Alberu raised his eyebrow.
Without looking back, Cale walked away. “Back to my room. It’s already morning.”
“The servants will come in near time. You don’t want to wait?”
Did you just forget what I say about sharing the bed?
Cale understood the implied words but made no effort to stop. “I’m going to wash up in my own room. Your Highness can tell them that.”
Cale, no, Kim Rok Soo didn’t want to entangle himself with the Royalty. He really wanted to spend less time with Alberu in this lifetime. He was almost at the door connected to his room, when that precise door opened, showing a panicked Hans.
“Young Master Cale!! Where are you?!”
“……”
“…….”
Both Cale and Alberu were stunned.
“Ah, here you are! I thought you escape the palace last night!! You scared me!”
Cale froze on the spot. Alberu was stunned to see Cale’s butler open the door roughly and loudly.
Hans, finally relieved, calmed down and saw the crown prince looking at him dumbfounded. He blinked, then flinched at the realization.
“I apologize for my rudeness, Your Highness. I was looking for Young Master Cale as he’s not in bed.” He bowed deeply, embarrassed because he raised his voice earlier.
Alberu coughed falsely, covering his mouth with his fist. “Uh, sure. So you’re aware where Cale was sleeping and panicked when he’s not in his own room.”
“Yes, Your Highness. I didn’t know he moved to His Highness’ room in the middle of the night.”
“I didn’t.” Cale snapped right away, scowling at Hans.
“Hmm? But the young master is with His Highness.”
Cale turned his head toward Alberu, glaring with clear annoyance. Alberu was startled because it’s been so long since someone blatantly showed their disapproval at him openly.
“Thanks to someone, I’m here now.”
The disrespect he got ticked him off a bit. Alberu smiled, eyes not very kind. Yet Cale remained scowling and returned to look at Hans.
“Prepare my bath.”
“Ah, I’ve prepared it. I was about to wake young master earlier.”
Cale nodded, striding to his room. Hans made way for him before bowing again to Crown Prince Alberu.
On the other hand, Alberu told something to Hans.
“The breakfast will be in the dining room. Tell Cale to come down after washing up.”
“Yes, Your Highness. I’ll tell Young Master Cale.”
The door closed again. Alberu was silent for a moment, then ran a hand on his blond hair. He exhaled deeply, feeling drained the moment he woke up.
He was utterly perplexed this morning.
His usual peaceful morning turned into a daring performance of his husband who woke him up with a scream.
The servants came, faces full of confusion when the Prince Consort was not in the vicinity. Alberu kindly smile and informed them.
“Cale is bathing in his room. Assist Hans if you want to serve Cale.”
The servants bowed and went to the next door, afraid for their fate for not coming earlier.
Alberu shook his head, going to bathe as well.

Breakfast in the dining room on the second day.
Cale remembered the lingering awkwardness in the past. Alberu would smile at him, pulling out the chair for him, asking if the food suits his taste while he’s enduring the act of caring husband. The servants may glance at them occasionally, but they heard how spiteful he responded to Alberu.
He scoffed at the memories as he walked to the dining room. Inside, Alberu was already sitting on the head table. The same sunny smile plastered on his face, and Cale watched the same scene happen like a video.
Alberu pulled out a chair for him, asking him to sit there.
Cale sat there, looking at the food that now have meat. He smiled at the food. ‘Finally.’
Although not as delicious as Beacrox's cooking, Cale agreed Alberu’s palace’s chef was very skilled. He picked the foods which he missed a lot. Juicy steak and sausage. Sweet fruits. White wine and red wine.
He was smiling, ignoring Alberu’s presence at the same table. He also didn’t see the shocked servants seeing him eating without commenting harshly about the food.
“Are the foods to your liking, Cale?”
“Mmn, yes. Everything’s delicious. Especially the steak.”
Alberu who was eating with wary relaxed a bit. Cale didn’t seem going to throw the food. The redhead looked to enjoy the breakfast.
“Really? I’m glad.”
“Tell the chef that I like this steak’s sauce. I want it for my lunch, too.”
“That could be arranged. I’ll tell the kitchen staff to do it.”
At the end of breakfast, Cale left the room first, telling the Crown Prince he retreated first to his chamber. Alberu, feeling relieved from having a peaceful breakfast, allowed Cale to go back while he was going to work immediately.
They didn’t talk about the morning minor accident. They knew well that servants speak and that would not do. That could be their night talk, probably during supper.
Alberu thought he needed to straighten up some misunderstanding. On the other hand, Cale wanted to settle some new agreement to make his life in the palace easier in this lifetime.
-o-
Alberu finished his work earlier than usual, courtesy of Tasha’s persuading and his need to talk to his husband over the prenuptial contract once again, in the hope Cale would listen to him and not be drunk.
At this moment, Cale was still reading a book in his room, not having any slightest intention to move to Alberu’s bed. Hans was sweating from nervousness. He had been persuading his young master to sleep in the Crown Prince’s room as it’s getting late.
Yet the young master was not minding the nagging. He’s annoyed, but he also missed his people’s caring side before they died.
Hans was one of them.
Therefore, he just put on a stoic face and ignored the plea coming from his desperate butler. It was refreshing to hear Hans' voice after so many years.
“Young Master Cale, I’m so grateful that you’re not drinking, but it’s time to sleep,” Hans repeated so many times that he’s getting tired from it.
“Hmm. Five minutes more, Hans.”
His young master was so stubborn. Cale had been reading novels he brought from Henituse Estate all day. It’s been so long since he read books without having to think of emergency calls awaiting him.
“Young masterrr…!”
“Later, Hans. I’m not sleepy yet.”
As he said that, he yawned, mouth opened wide.
“Young master, please, sleep on His Highness' bed! Or he’ll move you on his own like last night. Who knows what he will do next?!”
Cale sighed. After explaining that Alberu was indeed the one who carried him to the bed, Hans was terrified that there’ll be consequences. Cale was sure Alberu did that out of obligation and necessity, not because he was sincere.
“Don’t fret. His Highness won’t do anything drastic just because of that. I’m sure he’s now finishing his work.”
Hans wondered if this calm temperament was his young master’s real facade. He had been witnessing Young Master Cale snapping, breaking properties, and being loud most of the time; so seeing the redhead like this was surprising.
If he reported such calm behavior to the Lord, Hans could imagine Lord Deruth’s surprise as well. Was this due to him adjusting to life in the crown prince's palace?
Knock knock.
Hans headed toward the door connected to the Crown Prince’s room. The door opened and Crown Prince Alberu was there, still in his formal attire and smiling.
“You’re not sleeping yet?”
Cale turned his head, face remained stoic while replying. “As you can see, I’m awake. Your Highness.”
Alberu entered and got closer to the bed. “I just finished my work. Before sleeping, do you mind joining supper?”
There he started, the joining supper offering which Cale made a mistake in the past. The mistake relied on the context Alberu gave and Cale didn’t have any plan to do the same mistake.
“What are you planning to talk about, Your Highness?”
Cale would not yield. He’s determined to do less in this lifetime.
Alberu’s smooth face was marred with a slight crease from slight surprise. His perfect facade almost faltered because he sensed that Cale, the notorious trash young master, was more than the rumors.
He planned to lead the talk about the marriage contract in case Cale needed a reminder about his role, but somehow he felt Cale’s gaze made him certain this would not be easy talk.
He put on his signature smile wider, inviting Cale to have supper in their bedroom to talk over their public persona.
Knowing that Alberu was going to put a leash on him, Cale spoke, “Only if Your Highness agreed to listen to my wish as well, I’ll have supper together.”
Alberu contemplated for a second. “Didn’t the contract already include your wish?”
Cale stifled his laugh. His shoulder shook a bit, then sat up straight from his laying position. “Unfortunately, those conditions were from my parents, not me, Your Highness.”
Alberu stared at Cale’s gaze. The deep gaze that held an unknown experience made him heightened his alertness. He unconsciously clenched his fist, then opened it again as he exhaled.
“Fine. I’ll listen to your wish. May we have supper now?”
Cale smirked, his refined movement on leaving the bed seemed very effortless as he walked first to the crown prince’s bedroom. “Hans, you’re retired for tonight. Go rest.”
Hans who’s been there in silence bowed. “Yes, young master.”
-o-
In the sitting area, bottles of the finest wine and refreshments were already prepared by Alberu’s servants. Cale took a sit on the most comfortable couch, legs crossed, and poured the wine into the glass. He looked as if he owned the room.
Alberu was watching Cale’s confident and calm demeanor that’s far from loud and on the verge of breaking property.
When they met for the first time for the hearing, Cale was scowling all the time with a thuggish appearance, not hiding his displeased at all. The second time they met, at the engagement ceremony, Cale was reluctant to receive the betrothed gifts. His eyes seemed to deem everything worthless. The third time they met, on the wedding day, Cale looked gloomy. He looked resigned and did not smile at all.
Now that Cale seemed to accept his fate, the redhead looked like ready to face his future in this palace. Alberu wondered if the blatant disrespect would be his daily occurrence with Cale, seeing him already drinking wine before being allowed to sit and touch the refreshment.
Brushing aside his discomfort, Alberu sat on the head table and poured wine for himself. He swirled the glass, inhaling the sweet scent, then took a sip of it. A sweet and bitter taste spread in his mouth, relishing the finest Henituse wine he prepared for this talk.
They needed to talk. Having a productive conversation which will bring him to advantage in controlling Cale’s behavior for the time being and in the future.
“So, will Your Highness do the honor of explaining your purpose?”
Cale started the talk. In the past, he just drank and ignored the context which made him restrained while Alberu talked most of the time. This time, he initiated the talk.
Alberu hummed, thinking about how to lure his husband to follow his plan.
“You’re much calmer than the rumors I heard. May I assume they’re exaggerating too much?”
Cale, Kim Rok Soo, scoffed lightly. He emptied his glass and poured more. “Some is true; like me breaking chairs and tables, throwing bottles at the gangsters, and I talk rudely. Like now.”
Alberu took time to process. “Are you restraining yourself, now, Young Master Cale?”
Swirling the glass and focusing his gaze on the sparkling wine glass, Cale answered sluggishly. “No, this is me enjoying my favorite wine.” His gaze turned to Alberu. “You did a good job asking for my most-liked Henituse wine.”
Was that praise? Alberu weirdly felt insulted.
“It is only normal to find out my husband’s favorite. I should treat you well, don’t I?”
“Hmm, thank you. I will accept the treatment as the contract is written.”
How arrogant, how rude. No one behaved this casually toward him. Not even Tasha.
Alberu almost faltered. One of the clauses that Alberu had to do perfectly was treating Cale well; no matter how terrible he was. On the other hand, Cale didn’t have the obligation to treat Alberu the same behind the public.
This was what Alberu wanted to address to Cale.
“To be honest, I want us to talk regarding our persona.”
Cale stared stoically. This was where he made a mistake before. If what Alberu’s going to say was the same, then it would be:
“I want you to treat me the same in private and in public.”
“I want you to treat me the same in private and in public.”
Ah. A repeating scene. The words that seemed nothing but held more weight than it implied. This was the beginning of the ‘Crown Prince Alberu taming the trash Cale Henituse' rumor in the past. And the beginning of his delusion as he’s immersed to act nice to Alberu.
“I’ve been thinking that practicing to act naturally to the public is easier if we implement the act directly in our private life. Therefore, alibi and testimony that our relationship is extremely good is assured.”
The nicely wrapped words didn’t work on Cale anymore. He knew more about how greedy Alberu was. He knew how sly and smart the Crown Prince was. His silver tongue and sunny smile were swords and shields that won people’s hearts to behave as Alberu wanted.
What Alberu said made sense. If they’re practicing acting naturally as if they’re indeed close and not minding the arranged marriage, public opinion would see them in a more positive light. For Cale, unfortunately, it was a double edge sword.
As his image changed to that of a tamed, docile individual, more people approached him with ill intentions. He got hurt, humiliated in public, and Alberu sorted it in his own way that didn’t benefit him at all. He apologized to the public, but not defending Cale. As a result, his being ridiculed by nobles was a common thing; more than when he's just a trash Cale.
Cale didn’t want to face the same fate.
The air around him got colder as he remembered his terrible past. Cale’s gaze became cold and menacing, startling Alberu who was waiting for a reaction.
“You think that’s necessary to maintain this political marriage?” Cale asked sharply.
Witnessing the reaction that’s not in his expectation again, Alberu’s perfect prince facade finally cracked.

Chapter Text
36 years old Kim Rok Soo suffered a lot. After his team leader, best friend, and other Team 1 members died, he had to rebuild Team 1 by himself. He underwent a harsh situation that team leader Lee Soo Hyuk mentioned to him.
To rebuild and continue Lee Soo Hyuk’s legacy, Rok Soo was hunted by assassins. He’s threatened and kidnapped by other guilds to bring him in by force. Their schemes were what team leader Lee Soo Hyuk told him. Thanks to Soo Hyuk’s taught, he managed to outsmart them and took revenge on them.
Gone was the naivety and innocent life of Cale Henituse from the first timeline. The corrupted mind was ingrained as his brain kept working on persisting the temptation until he was tired of everything. Cale, Kim Rok Soo the cold-hearted bastard, chose to ignore the invitation to join better guilds.
Going back to the Roan Kingdom as a prince consort, Cale’s first priority was his safety and that’s by not getting swayed by upcoming storm. A small rock like this was nothing.
As he asked Alberu whether acting naturally in private was necessary, Cale saw the crack in Alberu’s always-perfect facade. The more he stared, the more he could read Alberu’s expression. It’s bound to happen when all he did in the past was observe this Crown Prince’s face.
Alberu was getting nervous. Although that faltered look immediately gone as the crown prince collected himself again, it didn’t change the fact that Alberu was taken aback.
This kind of situation was what Cale wanted.
Alberu’s goal was to restrain his freedom. On the other hand, Cale’s goal was the exact opposite. He pursued peace for his own selfishness while the crown prince sought more power for the better kingdom once he ascended the throne.
They could not be more different than this. If Cale had to threaten Alberu in order to get his wish granted, he’s more than willing to do so.
Alberu’s smile widened and brighter than usual. With blue eyes that were not smiling, he emptied his wine glass. After taking a deep breath, he asked, “Isn’t public opinion the most important thing for our sake?”
Hearing that, Cale’s lips crooked, and spoke with a mocking tone. “Our sake?” Cale leaned back, one arm resting on the top of the couch. “You mean your own sake.”
Sensing it started to breach out of his plan, Alberu immediately retorted. “Cale, we’re married. How can I only think for myself?”
“Exactly. Why bother with public opinion if it’s for the better both of us?”
Cale raised up the hand that held the wine glass, being nonchalant as his smug smile plastered. He reflected back the words Alberu said to him.
Not allowing Alberu to retort first, he added, “Your Highness, public opinion is not important to me at all. It was you who needed their side and approval for the greater Roan Kingdom. You can’t tell me what I must do by talking like this.”
There he said it. Cale jabbed Alberu with the fact.
What he said was Alberu’s desire that made him agree to this marriage.
Alberu stiffened more. He forgot to breathe as he saw the previously mocking expression become stoic. His jaw clenched when Cale’s words rang in his mind.
In his entire life, no one but his aunt Tasha knew well about this. Even his father and Count Deruth who had met him didn’t see through his hidden desire.
But this young man, the good-for-nothing trash young master, mentioned it casually as if it’s written on his face.
Cale knew he said the right thing because Alberu’s fist trembled. Behind that smile, the crown prince asked, “And? What are you going to do after figuring this out?”
Alberu was very perceptive. And Cale knew the crown prince was aware that he was not just an alcoholic who loved to go rampage by now. If Alberu deemed Cale as a trash-like rumor, he would change the topic to change the flow.
Putting down the wine glass, Cale leaned in. “Shall we start negotiating now, Your Royal Highness?”
Alberu let out a short scoff, running a hand through his blond hair. He let go of his pretense as he smiled dangerously that’s similar to Cale.
“I guess the rumors are an insult as you’re nothing like they said.”
“They’re useful for me, though. No one cares if I behaved rudely. Because I’m a trash.”
“Deceiving yourself to deceive the world. Very sly of you.”
“That’s very kind of you, Your Highness. Your compliment warms my heart.”
Cale was happy to see Alberu’s perplexed face. He knew Alberu hated and avoided people that are similar to him. Cale could act like that now. He happily did this to make Alberu push him further until the man forgot about him.
“So, you mentioned about your ‘wish’ earlier. Can we start the negotiation by telling me what’s your wish, dear husband?”
Finally standing on the equal ground, Cale opened his mouth.
“My wish is simple, Your Highness. I just want to freely go out and in from the palace.”
A slight frown marred Alberu’s forehead. He didn’t restrict Cale from going out at all. As long as Cale informed him where he went and when would he return, Alberu had no problem.
“Can you explain further? I don’t remember I didn’t allow you to go out.”
Cale’s laid-back demeanor hid his solemn feeling. Alberu indeed didn’t restrict him from doing so, but his movement was very limited.
“I don’t want to have a group of knights to escort me. Just one person, if you still want to monitor me.”
Alberu was silent.
It was mandatory. It’s the basic rule for royalty to be escorted by knights and soldiers for safety reasons. Alberu also didn’t like to be monitored strictly, but he learned to adapt when the escorts weren’t from his maternal family support.
“Cale, my dear husband. The capital is different from the Henituse territory. It’s more dangerous and a very competitive place. If they saw a prince consort going around without proper escort, although you didn’t mind public opinion, it’ll add the risk you in danger.”
“Who says I’m going to play around Huiss?”
At the quick response, Alberu had to frown deeper. “…where do you plan to go?”
Cale’s cunning smile became more apparent when his eyes turned into a crescent moon shape. He twirled the wine glass as he answered nonchalantly.
“Anywhere I want to go.”
He would not tell Alberu directly. He knew the secret passage thanks to his first life. He knew the change shift during night time. If he wanted to delay his information reaching this crown prince, Cale had to hide the location.
“I’m afraid I can’t allow you to go unless you bring at least one knight and five soldiers. Especially if you won’t tell me where you go.”
“You will make them report everything I do to you no matter what, anyway. Why bother bringing many people if one would suffice to report back?”
Alberu refrained his sigh. In front of him was really no trash. There’s no way a trash retort back about no privacy languidly like this. He, in fact, wanted to know how Cale managed to fool the entire country into thinking he’s trash.
Placing his fingers on his temple, Alberu lost his appetite to have supper. The refreshments and light foods were untouched as he leaned back on his couch.
“Cale, this matter… is not as easy as you imagine. I can’t give you a pass to leave the palace without knowing where you go and your purpose.”
Pouring more wine into his empty glass, Cale chuckled. “Do you want to hear a part of it, Your Highness?”
Alberu glanced at Cale through his peripheral vision. He felt annoyed to see his two-day husband start drinking relaxedly while he failed to bring up their persona in the public topic once again.
“Humor me. At least tell me whether what you’ll do endanger yourself or not.”
Cale was staring at the wine, humming softly. “Your Highness, Henituse County is a neutral household that now supports you with me as the hostage.”
Alberu inhaled deeply when Cale’s tone softened. He and the others never mentioned that Cale was a hostage, but it must be what the redhead felt for this marriage. Alberu patiently waited as Cale sipped more wine. His face flushed yet a dark glint flashed in his fox-like eyes.
“As long as Your Highness allows me to be free, this humble one will help you gain power.”
Alberu reaction was… speechless. His face hardened once again, unable to believe the young man beside him. He glared at his two-day husband and clenched his clasped hands.
“…are you joking with me? Did you even know what you say is contradictory? How do you plan to help me if you’re not telling me anything?”
Cale laughed half-heartedly, already expecting this kind of reaction from Alberu.
The Crown Prince was not an easy person to persuade by all means. He didn’t believe anyone except one person, his aunt Tasha. Cale found out about her when he was about to enter Alberu’s office and overheard them talking.
Although Alberu now sort of believed that ‘trash Cale’ was just a mask, he’s never a reckless one to let anyone wandering out of his radar. His eyes and ears were everywhere.
“I didn’t say I won’t tell you.” Cale leaned back, shoulder slumped as he closed his eyes. “I just not planning to tell you everything.”
Cale really had to have some freedom to execute his plan. And Alberu Crossman was the number one hindrance in his plan.
This kind of conversation actually had little meaning for them, but it’s an important small step. Both of them had to lose something in order to move on.
Alberu felt upset. He had this growing anger that suddenly surfaced after hearing Cale. Of course, he hid the anger and instead poured himself more wine to drink. He needed alcohol to be able to continue.
“I still don’t understand your logic. Mind to elaborate further before I misinterpret your intention to make trouble?”
Cale opened his eyes, blinking at the ceiling, then staring at Alberu. He thought for a moment after noticing the crown prince was upset at him.
His chest felt heavy. He thought he was not attached to this crown prince anymore, yet he found himself feeling bitter and sad. He thought he was done with his one-sided crush and thus pursuing his non-existent life in this palace.
But the moment he saw Alberu put on his mask again instead of talking casually, Cale knew he was fooling himself.
The difference was that now he’s as good as Alberu in masking his own emotion. He smiled falsely, the kind one that Alberu always did in every scenario to lower the damage.
“I guess you really don’t have faith in me, Your Highness. Let’s call this end and start eating.”
He didn't try to persuade Alberu and instead cut the talk one-sidedly, an unexpected cowardly move after his through planning.
“Cale Henituse.”
Cale leaned in to eat chocolate pudding. Sweet food comforted him more than anything in this place.
“Yes, Your Highness?”
Alberu was watching him very closely with a displeased gaze. Cale ignored him and ate the pudding in silence. He had some predictions on what thoughts Alberu had on him right now, and none of them were looking at him in a positive light.
Perhaps he’s too confident. Perhaps he had forgotten who he was facing.
Perhaps… he’s failed to dissociate his past with the present.
“If you’re ending this talk, I’ll forget this and we must present our best relationship to the public. Do you understand?”
Cale almost sneered, although he laughed emptily.
The demanding tone Alberu used just now didn’t happen this early. Cale felt his relationship with Alberu was going downfall with him walking on eggshells.
That’s fine. There were more urgent things to fix than his silly upbringing with Alberu.
This would be a reminder for him what kind of person Alberu was.
From the beginning, Cale Henituse was a trapped butterfly in Alberu Crossman’s spiderweb.
It was fine to start from zero again. Even minus.
It's just evident how hard dealing with Alberu was if he didn’t detach his emotions.
-o-
What happened during supper was long forgotten in their head, as if last night's talk never occurred at all. This was common when Cale had to up-level himself to Alberu’s standard.
Like a programmed computer, Cale still closed his eyes, pretending in deep sleep when the servants entered the bedroom. What happened next was another deja vu of his past.
Alberu’s gentle tone with his sunny smile talking to them, ordering breakfast to be served in the bedroom, and not waking him up until he’s done preparing for the day.
Cale curled his body on the edge of the bed, trying hard to ignore the voices and thinking hard about how to minimize his contact with Alberu for the time being.
Regret still lingering in his chest for upbringing the talk but not finishing it properly.
If Team Leader Lee Soo Hyuk knew this, Cale bet the team leader would smack his back head. Kim Rok Soo learned how to be the upper hand and took control of the negotiation, not the lower hand.
Yet he repeated the mistake because, at one moment, Alberu’s clear disapproval was still enough to make him surrender. Just how could he be subdued this easily as if his hard life as Kim Rok Soo was not helping?
On this third day, except for the morning when Alberu acted as a caring husband alone, Cale was drinking all day as if his chamber was the bar.
Funnily enough, this coping mechanism allowed him to be alone.
Just like his first life, the miserable and trashy Cale Henituse.
Notes:
I have a hard time writing Cale's demeanor. Deciding he's a mix of OG Cale and KRS makes me indecisive. Hahaha. The initial plan was to let Cale have the upper hand and gain some freedom, but in the end, it returned to the starting point. If there's awkward writing, then you'll see that's where I'm struggling to write.
Chapter Text
“He’s what?”
Alberu’s eyebrows knotted closely, halting his writing activity, and squinting his eyes at his aide Ben.
“The Prince Consort has been drinking in his bedroom since he woke up.”
It’s a simple report that concerned every worker in the palace.
Cale Henituse was notorious for his drinking habit. He broke properties and any furniture. He threw the empty bottles. He swore to any people that came close to him. He glared, scowled, and looked down on them. The colorful rude vocabulary was accompanied by his thuggish behavior.
Alberu Crossman knew the prenuptial contract meant nothing to Cale. Bearing the family name ‘Crossman’ didn’t mean he’d stop drinking because he drank alcohol like tea or water.
He’s more certain about it because of last night.
Cale affirmed that the prenuptial marriage contract was decided by his parents. Count and Countess Henituse wrote down their conditions which they thought were the best for Cale.
Unfortunately, their conditions were far from it.
Looking at the redhead’s gaze last night, Alberu recognized it’s the gaze of someone who hid his end goal, but allowed the others to notice his ambitions.
Cale brought up his ‘wish’. He’s honest, but not telling the reason why he needed it.
That’s what Alberu was confused about. Where and what’s Cale’s purpose to tell him openly that he wanted to go somewhere?
Alberu thought Cale would try to sneak out without informing him. But in Henituse Territory, Cale probably already used having the knight tailing him as well. Alberu also had not figured out the reason Cale backed out before persuading him to get his wish granted.
Looking up at Ben after thinking, he commented.
“Let him be. As long as he doesn’t start breaking things, no need to stop him.”
“If he did?”
“Do whatever it takes to stop him and call me.”
Ben obeyed, going back to Cale’s bedroom and guarded outside.
Meanwhile, Alberu pressed his fingers on his temple. It was just the third day and Cale already started drinking again. He already had a handful of annoying stuff to get done. He didn’t need another one right beside him.
Hoping Cale remembered the rules, Alberu continued working on his responsibility.
It was quick to have another day pass when someone was occupied. For Cale, unfortunately, the day didn’t get past quickly. The time felt so slow. He drank, emptied the wine bottle, opened another one, and drank again, repeating this numerous times, until ten bottles were scattered on the table.
Surprisingly, Cale stopped after he saw those wine bottles. His smile crooked, body slumped on the heavy couch he sat on.
He’s used to working all day as a team leader. Kim Rok Soo had so much paperwork, reports, and videos to be analyzed. He had to check on his team members' work, and their improvement, or be highly alerted once the emergency call about an upcoming monster came on his radar.
‘What am I doing, really?’
So many thoughts plagued his mind. Mostly depressing, if not fatigued him.
Kim Rok Soo didn’t have time to enjoy drinking. On the other hand, Cale Henituse had all the time to drink without worries.
Kim Rok Soo was a very busy and productive man while Cale Henituse spent his youth leeching off his family and Alberu Crossman.
Biting down his lower lip, Cale glared at the empty bottles in contempt. He didn’t have the habit of breaking things anymore. As Kim Rok Soo, he destroyed more than he needed, both from work and personal grudge.
Throwing the wine bottles to the floor or wall so it’s broken into a thousand shards was the last thing he wanted to do.
Cale, no, Kim Rok Soo could not sit still. He’s itching to do something. Anything. To distract him from memories.
That’s why he’s a cold-hearted bastard. The terrible bastard in the company. The one who preferred to work and just took off days on important days.
His empty laugh scared Hans who stood meters away from him. Hans was there in case his young master started… behaving unruly.
Cale closed his eyes, lying sideways while his feet remained on the floor. As much as he wanted to rest and have a peaceful life this time, he knew his hope was far from him.
Not when civil war and his assassination were still a few steps ahead of him.
Alberu Crossman could not be his ally right now. That Crown Prince was too calculating and full of suspicion. Cale got this trait from Alberu after spending so many years beside him. Lee Soo Hyuk noticed this, brought him under his care, and taught him how to make good use of those soft skills.
Frowning deeply, his head felt heavy and disorganized.
He had to move his body.
Going somewhere without thinking and aimlessly.
But he’s still in the palace.
He needed that sly Crown Prince’s approval.
Cale was frustrated. Very much. So much that he grunted and squirmed in discomfort.
Why could he not continue last night? Why could he not persist? Why could he not separate personal feelings and work like he always did as Kim Rok Soo?
Why?
Why?
“Um, Young Master, do you need something?”
Hans, the sole butler that stayed near Cale asked anxiously.
The young master was drinking nonstop. Although it was normal for him to drink a lot, somehow he sensed something was wrong with his young master. The problem was that he could not point out what exactly the root of the young master’s foul and depressing state.
He’s afraid that Cale suddenly lashed out and threw the wine bottle toward him.
On the other hand, Cale was thinking.
Was there a desolate place in the Palace of Joy? Was there an empty spot that even the servants didn’t clean up? Or should he go and use the secret passage to sneak out?
While the silence stretched out, Cale finally decided.
“Hans, is that aide outside?”
“Aide? His Highness’ aide?”
“Yes. Check if he’s guarding outside. Bring him in if he is there.”
Hans was confused because why in the world did an aide do a guard’s job? He opened the door, and his eyes widened in shock.
There he was, aide Ben. The man was standing still with a firm expression as if he were a knight.
Their eyes met, and Ben asked Hans first.
“Is there anything the Prince Consort needs?”
Hans, calming down after several times blinking and hitching, finally responded.
“The young master wants you to enter.”
Now, it’s Ben’s turn to be confused. He had suspicion and raised his alertness in case the Prince Consort asked for something dangerous or risking the Crown Prince’s well-being.
His eyes were met with a laying Cale Crossman on the couch, far from prime and decent for his new status, and when Cale opened his eyes, Ben was faced with sluggishness.
Cale was reek from alcohol. His face flushed and looked very drunk. The redhead young man’s gaze looked down on him, and Ben was ready to refuse adamantly any request that came from this person. If he’s going to ask about His Highness, Ben would inform him with minimal but correct information.
“You ask for me, Prince Consort?”
Cale almost laughed at the flat tone he used. He remembered Ben. This stiff aide was not a normal aide. He’s one of Alberu’s secretaries on the surface, but he’s actually part of an investigation team that search for information from shadow.
Standing before him was the man who served Alberu and only listened to Alberu. He did not treat Cale badly, but he did judge Cale negatively. Over time, that flat tone turned disapproval and repulsed.
Using the armchair as support to sit up straight again, Cale faced the person who already judged him. Not that he’s upset because his awful behavior led him to this situation. Mostly everyone acted like Ben and Cale stopped getting bothered by this long ago.
Acting as if he knew nothing was the best.
“Are you going to monitor me all day?”
Ben’s eyebrows twitched at the blatant question. It sounded mischievous for a nonchalant voice.
“Yes. His Highness orders me to assist you if you need something.”
Cale’s smile crooked. He leaned back and tilted his head to the ceiling.
‘The past had not changed.’
“I see. You’re dismissed.”
“Yes?”
Not quite catching the intention, Ben finally bowed to return to his spot outside after Cale waved his hand languidly.
Hans asked if he needed something again, and Cale asked for cold water.
He then slept on the couch although it was only afternoon.
Another dinner approaching. Alberu was once again reminded by his aunt Tasha to have dinner together with Cale. He listened to her, telling one of the guards to inform the Prince Consort about dinner in the dining hall.
Sometime later, the guard returned with Ben.
“Your Highness.”
Ben greeted him and bowed politely. Alberu smiled, putting down his pen. “How’s your task for today, Ben?”
The aide took his silence several seconds before reporting.
“The Prince Consort drinks as usual. He was drunk when he called for me and asked whether I was going to keep monitoring him or not. After that, he stayed inside. He was fast asleep when I checked just now.”
It was nice to have a brief report from Ben. No breaking furniture. No shards had to be cleaned. No childish rage going rampage in the palace.
Alberu hummed, tapping his fingers on the table. He had to admit he was relieved to know nothing got broken or destroyed today. His mood lightened.
“Wake him up to have dinner, then. He must not skip dinner if he already skips lunch with alcohol.”
“Yes, sir.”
Ben returned to his post, telling Hans about dinner in the dining room, and he wished that today would end without trouble.
Indeed, Cale came with a flushed face and walked sluggishly like a drunk man. Fortunately, he ate silently. His attention was on the food, only answering Alberu’s question in dispiriting and short answer.
Alberu may felt slighted by the impudence Cale showed to him, but for now, he’s being patient and understood, this was the best behavior Cale could do for him despite his usual rudeness. He was really glad that Cale didn’t do anything reckless today.
Tomorrow would be another day to be alert, but today was a safe day.
That’s why once they were in the bedroom, Alberu didn’t immediately return to his office after bathing. He took his small break time to spend time with Cale who was getting ready to sleep.
Cale, on the other hand, still felt uncomfortable to see Alberu after that talk. He frowned when Alberu decided to sit next to him casually.
“What are you doing, Your Highness?”
‘Aren’t you busy? Didn’t you have to go back to your office?’
“I’m planning to do my role as your husband. I’m going to stay until you fall asleep.”
The frown got deeper, clearly not amused.
Alberu had specific things he did to fulfill his role as a ‘caring husband’ outside the formal duty. One of those was spending time on the bed before going to work again.
Cale remembered the time he liked this affection act. Just like now, Alberu patted his back gently while he lay on the bed. Cale felt calm when Alberu’s warm hand touched him. It soothed his unstable state and made him relaxed.
At that time, Cale would wait for Alberu just to be patted like this. He’ll sleep better, have no nightmares, and wake up fresh.
“Stop.”
Alberu’s hand halted, his blue eyes staring dumbfounded at the stern voice.
“No need to do this. You have more important work than waiting for me to sleep.”
Softer but still firm, Cale closed his eyes tightly, causing clear discomfort on his face. He turned his back away from Alberu, pulling the blanket to his neck.
“Cale… you don’t like this?”
‘It’s not that… I just…’
Cale had to bite his lip and inhale deeply before speaking again.
“Yes. I don’t like it.”
He was glad his voice didn’t shake. Alberu also retracted his hand.
“Well, I can’t help it if you didn’t want it. Sleep well, Cale.”
Cale heard the clothes rustling as the bed was not dipped anymore. Alberu left the bedroom and returned to his office.
The moment the door closed, Cale curled his body, surprised by how his own body reacted to Alberu’s quick retreat.
Cale hated the lingering emotion he had toward Alberu.
He hated the way his chest hurt and the tears falling on his cheeks.
He hated his own decision to limit his interaction with Alberu.
He justified himself that this was for the best, to protect himself from the future.
Cale didn’t believe in God, but he prayed to not relapse and changed his future.
He’s Kim Rok Soo who needed peace; he’s not the naive Cale Henituse. That Cale Henituse was gone.
As he steeled himself while getting drowsy, Cale felt calm once the detachment took in place.

Another chapter Cale feels depressed before we meet Cale's other companion. :)
Chapter 6: Talk With the King
Summary:
Cale had a conversation with King Zed.
Chapter Text
Sleep certainly served its purpose: rest and refresh one’s mind.
Cale had a good sleep that night. He woke up fresh and calm. Although he’s sharing the bed with the Crown Prince, it felt much better after he set more boundaries, or to be precise, his emotion had been suppressed once again.
He woke up earlier than Alberu again. Hans would not come until an hour later followed by other servants in half an hour. Cale decided to leave the bed first. He prepared his bath and washed up quickly. He wore simple clothes he found in his walk-in closet and opened the balcony in his bedroom.
The dawn was cold. The sun had not risen when Cale leaned to the rail to inhale chilly early morning air.
Many thoughts occupied his never-resting brain and one of them was the plan to visit the gazebo in the middle of Crown Prince’s maze garden that’s in his sight from where he stood.
At first, Cale planned to go to the city first. However, after some consideration, Cale decided to take his time in that serene place.
Crown Prince Alberu’s garden was lacking compared to the other princes’ and princesses’ gardens despite his higher status. Cale didn’t know why, but he assumed Alberu didn’t mind much about flowers and decoration.
That’s why that spot was not thoroughly cleaned whenever Cale came there. After some time, that empty gazebo became his spot to hide from everything.
He missed the chirping birds and random critters in there.
He missed the rusting chairs and his routine dusting the table.
He missed the weeds and flower veins’ that escaped the hedges.
He missed the place where no eyes and ears were in his vicinity but just him.
It was one good thing that no one came to find him and although Cale suspected Alberu knew he was there, Cale took Alberu’s ignorance to never disturb him as respecting his alone time.
A small smile appeared on his lips before Hans’ voice squeaked behind him.
“Y-Young Master Cale… you’ve wake up?”
Cale turned his head, eyebrows rose. “Why are you stating the obvious?”
Hans gulped, observing his master’s appearance.
Clothes worn casually with opened buttons on wrist and collar, dark colored instead of a combination of light and dark, and damp red hair from not thoroughly dried.
“…you took a bath by yourself, too?”
Hans sounded scared and Cale disliked such emotion from his butler.
“It’s not like I don’t have hands and feet to do it by myself. Besides, I don’t feel the need to call you at the early hour.”
Hans gasped, body straightened up with cold sweat formed on his forehead.
“It-It’s my duty to serve you, Young Master! You can wake me up anytime! Besides, it’s not appropriate for a Prince Consort to not be treated with delicate and carefulness!”
Cale scowled. “Am I a fucking fragile expensive vase?” He snapped when the mention of delicate came from Hans.
“No, sir!”
“Then just be casual. I can take care of myself, not some crippled man that needs full attention.”
Cale returned to the view before him, ignoring another gasp from Hans. The sun finally showed its presence slightly.
Alberu usually woke up around this time.
He dealt with Alberu’s scheme better now. He smiled upon returning to Alberu’s bed and saw the frowning Crown Prince sitting on the bed.
“You’ve woken up?”
“That’s the second time I’m questioned and yes, I woke up earlier than needed.”
Alberu seemed to want to sigh. He didn’t and said the plan for today.
“I have noble meetings this morning. Can’t have breakfast together, too. I suppose we’ll meet again at night.”
Ah. The Crown Prince was still upset. He’s being petty without servants, speaking sternly without allowing Cale to retort or disobey him.
Cale was used to this. There were many moments Alberu disregarded his presence like this, although not this early. He smiled wider, internally happy that they wouldn’t see each other today.
“I understand, Your Highness.”
Alberu frowned deeper, but not inquiring his spouse. He thought Cale’s just going to drink all day again and was happy that he’s not interfering with his day.
“Don’t get drunk and destroy things in your surroundings, Cale.”
After giving the warning, he called the servants to prepare his bath and informed Cale’s breakfast in the bedroom.
Cale returned to his bedroom again, satisfied with the situation.
He’s not allowing himself to be monitored today. He asked Hans to say he stayed in his room all day if his presence was being questioned, while in reality, he sneaked out to the shortcut path to the garden during changing shift time.
As he arrived at the neglected gazebo, Cale’s smile widened.
‘Yes, this is it.’
The comforting sight of the uncared gazebo quickly changed his mood. It lightened the tension and burden on his shoulders.
Thick bushes and flowers smelled heavy instead of fresh. Rusted chairs and tables felt so familiar and welcoming that Cale caressed the dust as if it were part of the beauty.
Creeak….
The sharp sound from the chair being dragged was not making his teeth aching. It’s funny because when Cale heard it for the first time, he flinched and was scared of the horror sound.
He sat on that chair, not caring about the thick dust immediately dirtying his soft clothes. The dust would not be too obvious. Cale made a good choice choosing dark brown pants.
Cale closed his eyes, inhaling flowers and leaves as if he were depending on them. It calmed his tangled mind.
Affirming it ‘calmed’ him was not enough.
This silent moment between him and the empty gazebo was like an oasis. Cale dared to say this was his most favorite place if not his bedroom. Even though he got rained on, burned by the sun, cold from snow, and coughing during transition season, Cale still came here just to find solace.
There were a few months before the Whipper Kingdom fell. Before that, Cale decided to pick up his people to increase his survival. It included Hero Choi Han, his butler Ron, his son Beacrox, and a few more.
Hero Choi Han is an unregistered citizen in Harris Village right now. He earned his ID and registered as one of Henituse territory’s citizens after he reported about the massacre tragedy in that village the next year and became a mercenary under a mercenary guild handled by Billos Flynn.
Rather than making Choi Han a hero under Alberu, Cale wanted the Korean young man by his side. Having someone from a familiar place put him at peace. Of course, Cale would not tell that he’s from South Korea as well.
Maybe someday.
Tak, tak, tak.
Cale’s finger knocked the dusted table. His expression returned to that stoic one as he thought about the plan.
If talking with Alberu Crossman was a hindrance for now, there’s someone else who could be serving a similar purpose in helping him.
That person also lived in the palace, on top of the monarch.
His Royal Majesty, King Zed Crossman.
The man who forced the marriage between them was useful in some ways. Cale could subtly go advanced without alarming the eyes that monitored him. Furthermore, asking the audience to King Zed was not impossible.
In fact, the King may have waited for his initiative to see him.
In the [Misstep of the Hero], there’s a paragraph stating, ‘King Zed tended to wait for them to visit him rather than him requesting their presence personally. This tendency was to avoid clear favoritism, hence why he told those people certain times to ask for an audience.’
The ‘time’ in this context meant his free time that’s disguised as the second part of having an audience for the day.
Of course, Cale did not have that privilege now. However, if he requested it, the chances he’s scheduled would be afternoon.
Cale returned to his room after a couple of hours. Nervous Hans was pacing around the room. The relieved look on the butler’s face, when Cale entered through the balcony, was horrifying.
“Young Master Cale! How did you jump to the third floor? It’s dangerous!”
He shouted in a whisper way, approaching Cale who jumped in effortlessly. He used the shortcut to go down, but there was no shortcut to the upstairs except climbing the tree to the third floor to avoid the guards and knights.
“Are you hurt?” Hans asked when Cale ignored him. “Just where did you go, Young Master? The aide asked about you and I’m afraid he’s suspicious as there’s no noise from you!”
“You did say I’m inside, do you?”
“Yes, I told him you’re taking a nap. I hope he believed that… thankfully I opened and poured some wine to make the room smelled like alcohol.”
Cale’s corner lips quirked up. “Good job, Hans.”
Hans sighed, clearly worried about his young master.
“Young Master Cale, it’s already the fourth day and the Crown has not told us what you should do as a Prince Consort. I’m afraid that your father, the Lord, will get upset once he hears you’ve been treated nothing but house arrest.”
Cale chuckled at the comparison.
He’s well aware that he’s closer to that hostage than a real member of the Royal family. Alberu didn’t give him work except if it was for a public stunt or the work was related to northeast neutral territory in the past.
He laid down on the bed, folded one knee, and put one arm over his eyes.
“Mmn, Hans. Write me a letter, will you?”
“I can write a letter for you, Young Master. For whom I will write and what do you intend to say?”
“Ask for an audience with His Royal Majesty the King. Tell His Majesty that his son-in-law wishes to meet him.”
Hans’ jaw dropped, body stiffened at once.
“Hi-His… Ma-ma-majesty…? The King…?”
“Yes, the King. Zed Crossman. The Crown Prince’s royal father. This country’s most powerful person.”
Cale nonchalantly spoke as if the King was not such an important figure, and flipped his body to lie on his stomach.
“Write that this son-in-law wishes to see him in private, too. Understand, Hans?” His voice was a bit muffled by the pillow, not seeing the panicked butler beside him.
“Ye-yes, Young Master.”
Albeit stuttering, Hans did what Cale asked. He wrote the letter with shaking hands and delivered it to the person in charge of the King’s letters in the Royal Family.
Alberu would not know this until Cale was called to the Royal Palace and Cale smiled widely as he imagined the shocked and slight panic in that Crown Prince’s handsome face.
Cale took a rest for the entire day and enjoyed the meal alone without anyone disturbing him. He also took the liberty to sleep earlier to avoid meeting Alberu at night.
‘Don’t worry, dear Husband. Now is not the time to interfere with your work.’
Cale indeed planned to have less interaction with Alberu, but it didn’t mean he’d let go of the chances to increase his survivability from assassinations that were going to come at him anytime.
A new day came and a response from His Majesty the King arrived right before lunch. As Cale expected, he’s scheduled to meet His Majesty this afternoon, when the King’s escort picked him up.
Ben who didn’t know about Cale sending a letter to the King thought that King Zed invited the Prince Consort personally, giving the said report to his master in a hurry.
The reaction on Crown Prince Alberu’s face at this moment was appalling if Cale had the chance to see it. Unfortunately, he was on his way to meet King Zed when Ben barged into Alberu’s office.
King Zed Crossman didn’t enjoy drinking tea. He preferred alcohol or water. Whenever he was served tea, he drank one cup for the entire meeting and then asked for water. When a letter from Cale Crossman arrived yesterday evening in the middle of his work, his curiosity hooked him to read it.
King Zed paused looking at his paperwork and opened the letter. The content was simple. His son-in-law requested to meet him in private. No sugar-coating words, no context about what topic, and no indication about complaint either.
He knew well Deruth Henituse’s personality. That friend of his tended to be straightforward and didn’t exaggerate the formality needed to greet a Royal family. When he saw Cale from afar, that young man’s expression was straightforward telling people: ‘I don’t like this; I disapprove of it; it is disgusting.’
Cale Henituse didn’t use words to be straightforward like his father. His demeanor was enough. At the same time, King Zed never heard Cale speak longer than one sentence. He didn’t count the vow of marriage because it’s not from the young man’s heart.
This letter, as straightforward as the one who sent him this, gave King Zed enough reason to answer instantly.
Because this young man was someone he dragged into this marriage without his opinion. He snatched the young man’s freedom in exchange for Henituse’s loyalty.
Zed Crossman was willing to spend his time listening to any rant that soon came from Cale Henituse, ready to see the flushed face from alcohol, and ready to prepare all kinds of wines for this new son-in-law.
“Send back a letter to Cale Crossman. I will meet him in the drawing room after all the audience tomorrow.”
The aide proceeded, not asking why King Zed had a slight tug on his smile before it disappeared instantly.
Cale didn’t drink.
When the drawing room’s door opened by the guard, King Zed’s attention solely focused on the red-haired young man.
Then, he frowned very slightly.
No alcohol smell coming from the young man. No flushed face from alcohol intake. No thuggish demeanor that people always commented as rude.
Cale Henituse stood straight properly, having a stoic expression, and healthy rosy cheeks. The young man seemed like a confident noble out there but without their snobbish smirk in the hope of gaining something favorable from him.
This was new, King Zed thought.
After the door closed behind him, Cale bowed just enough to show some respect. “Greeting to the Sun of the Boulder Kingdom.”
King Zed observed the young man who finally met him in private. As he’s prepared to face some rudeness, he’s not prepared to face the polite Cale Henituse. He was stunned for momentary because this was his first time seeing Cale sober.
“Have a seat, Prince Consort.”
Cale sat across King Zed, staring at the King as calmly as a river.
Still straight and calm, he spoke, “I’m grateful that His Majesty granted my wish right away.”
“I’m surprised you wanted to meet in private. However, I don’t see the reason for the decline either.”
“I see. No wonder His Majesty makes sure the servants are not present, too.”
Cale’s eyes scanned the entire room. There were no servants here, but he was certain there were a few shadows hidden here.
King Zed took a sip of his tea, not savoring the bitter and light taste. “I assume you have something to tell me that’s not appropriate for others to hear. I simply set the room like that.”
Cale finally smiled, and King Zed knew it was not sincere. The smile was closer to a formality and a warning. Coming from his new son-in-law of Henituse County, Zed predicted a complaint.
“Tell me what you want, child. I will give it to you as a gift for being a new member of the Royal family.”
“Whatever I want?”
Cale’s calm voice attracted King Zed’s attention more. He was used to a small amount of excitement whenever nobles heard he was showing interest, so Cale’s neutral demeanor did its job.
“Aren’t you here to ask something from me after complaining about your new life? What is it that you want? Land? Treasure? Gems? Mines?”
Cale’s gaze deepened. What he wanted was not shallow wealth from the King. He could earn those on his own. Well, if King Zed gifted him those, Cale would not refuse.
But right now, what he needed wasn’t wealth.
“I do need something, Your Majesty. However, it’s not an object. I don’t need one of Royalty’s property.”
King Zed’s forehead creased a little bit. “If not those, what do you need that you come to see me?”
Cale was silent for a few seconds, staring at the King in a slightly gentler manner. It made his smile scarier because whatever might come from the young man’s mouth was a threat to royalty for forcing him to enter this place.
A neutral golden turtle Henituse was not a fit in a palace. Zed Crossman brought a Henituse to the palace knowing the consequence of pressuring the Golden Turtle to support the Crown and his first son the Crown prince.
“Your Majesty, I know my place and my notorious image as a trash.” Cale started, speaking calmly. “People are talking about how ill-fitted a Crown Prince married a trash, although they don’t support His Royal Highness either.”
King Zed listened attentively, allowing the red-haired young man to talk more.
“Therefore, Your Majesty, I’m certain that I play a double-edged sword role as a Prince Consort. One may ignore me thinking all I do is drink, and the other may use this chance to bring down the Crown Prince.”
Zed was intrigued internally. He didn’t smile or show his interest. “So?”
A simple question, his way to allow Cale to continue, which the redhead understood as going straight to the point. Therefore, with the same calmness when he started, Cale spoke.
“I believe the danger is approaching me due to my new status. Especially during social events. This may sound ridiculous, but I want Your Majesty to prepare one healer or priest reserved for me during the event I’m going to attend soon.”
Zed stared at Cale. The young man sitting across from him didn’t get nervous. He didn’t look scared either.
“Do you know which social event you are obliged to be present?”
Cale knew. But he lied because Alberu had not mentioned it to him until a few days before the event.
“No, Your Majesty. However, I have my gut feeling. I fear I’m going to get hurt in some way. Whether it’s going to happen or not, I prefer taking prevention and solution at the same time.”
Talking about ‘gut feeling’ when it happened in the past was just an excuse for Cale. He may not know all about King Zed, but Cale was confident about one thing.
Zed Crossman took the Royalty’s image very seriously. He’s a mediocre and conservative King who would do anything to make sure the Roan Kingdom’s image is not tarnished by any trivial stuff.
Cale Henituse just entered the Royal family. Getting injured not long after joining the Crossman Royal family led to negative talk and rumors within the nobles' society. Not to mention Cale’s already bad image as trash and unfitting as a Prince’s Consort amplified the negativity.
The politics in the Roan Kingdom was not calm at this moment. It was full of small ripples that had not shown its identity but leaked threatening energy.
“Prevention and solution. I assume you’re going to try your best at not getting hurt and I keep a healer for you in case you’re hurt for real.”
“Yes, Your Majesty. You’re correct.”
Seeing the redhead remained composed and sober, Zed decided it was harmless to agree to this request.
“Very well. I will reserve one healer and one priest for you when the following event happens. Being cautious is a good thing, especially since you’re still adapting to this environment.”
Cale smiled, eyes curled up a bit. “Thank you very much, Your Majesty.”
As Cale stood up and bowed, Zed stopped him from leaving.
“I haven’t congratulated you on becoming our family. I’ll send you gifts later, and I’m curious about something. I hope you’ll answer me truthfully.
Cale stared, looking a bit surprised. “Please speak, Your Majesty.”
“Why are you requesting protection from me instead of Alberu?”
Zed saw through his intention and Cale smiled wider. There’s a different effect if Zed was the one taking care of the injured son-in-law instead of the spouse himself.
First, fewer people dared to try to harm him. Second, it spoke volumes about how the King supported the Crown Prince and this marriage. Thirdly, less complaints from Henituse County itself.
For Cale though, it’s very personal.
“Your Majesty, this noble is not able to deny the arranged marriage. Nevertheless, my priority didn’t change when I entered the palace.”
“And your priority is?”
Cale was confident he would not be punished nor reprimanded. He answered, “My safety, Your Majesty.”
His gaze was so deep and serious that Zed was taken aback momentarily. The King heard the following words.
“It’s my own life that I’m taking care of. Although the Crown Prince has the responsibility to protect me, I prefer to not use him as my shield every time.”
Cale learned the hard way. Alberu indeed gave the best for Cale. Unfortunately, Alberu’s protection in the middle of dispute and disunity wasn’t effective.
In the end, the best protection came from himself. Even if he had to kill someone, as long as he’s alive, it’s justifiable.
Zed nodded. “I understand. You can go back, Prince Consort Cale.”
Cale bowed at last, leaving the drawing room with slight anxiousness.
He didn’t plan to say everything truthfully. Only a part of it. It was true that his priority was his life and not using Alberu as his shield. Thankfully, the King didn’t question him why and from whom he needed protection.
He managed to take advantage of Zed who didn’t like to interfere too much and like to be selfish. An honest answer, enough to be believed, was better than a small lie in front of the King.
Chapter Text
Ben’s sudden report was like an emergency situation. Anything that’s related to his Royal Father the King deemed as urgent and important. So, when Ben said King Zed’s aide escorting Cale to meet the King, the alarm in Alberu’s head ringing.
First, it’s only the fifth day, less than one week. Yet Cale Henituse already being called by the King. Who knew what’s in his father’s mind to invite Cale? What was that old man planning? Didn’t the marriage already enough? Did he plan to give Cale task to monitor him in exchange? No, was Cale a part of King Zed’s people now?
“Cale Henituse, what was he doing when His Majesty’s aide came to bring him?”
“The Prince Consort stayed in his room all day. He did nothing but drink.”
It’s impossible for Ben to know that Cale sneaked out to the gazebo. Furthermore, Cale Henituse had not been given tour of the palace despite he’s staying for almost a week now.
Alberu pinched the bridge of his nose. He had no choice but asking Cale when he returned from meeting King Zed.
He hoped Cale would tell him what the King wanted from him.
Waiting for night arrived became so hard despite it’s already afternoon. Alberu was so restless that he could not focus and made many trivial mistakes. His mind wandering around that he would misspelled some words, pressing the nib’s too hard and the ink’s leaking, had to repeat some documents from the beginning due to wrong stamps, and many more.
The little things made him so frustrating that Alberu ended up feeling so drained and having headache.
There were so many times he thought to call Cale to his office. He resisted that urge. If he prioritize his curiosity, he’s afraid that Cale reclaimed his status as ‘hostage’ like yesterday.
The agitation and annoyed he felt for a few hours managed to make him look a few years older once he’s done.
His feet dashed to Cale’s chamber once it’s night. He opened his bedroom and then the connecting door toward Prince Consort’s room. He made sure he collected himself first and controlled his rapid breathing before he did so.
Inside, Cale Henituse was in the same position as yesterday. Cale was reading book, laying on his stomach on the bed. A bit of fruits remained in a bowl that Cale popped into his mouth as snacks. He seemed to not notice Alberu’s presence while Hans was startled and bowed immediately.
“Your Highness.”
Alberu flicked his wrist, accepting Hans’ greeting. He approached his husband, giving his well-trained smile.
“Is that book more interesting than me, dear Cale?”
Cale glanced through his peripheral vision, then returned to the book he read.
“It is. What do I deserve to have Your Highness’ attention before bedtime?”
Alberu felt a tick on his forehead. The audacity from Cale Henituse was something he had not getting used to.
Cale casually flipped the book’s page, internally waiting for the blond crown prince to speak.
“I was told that you meet His Majesty today.”
Without looking at Alberu, Cale responded, “That’s true. As expected of the Crown Prince’s connection, you already know without I’m telling you.”
Another tick appeared on Alberu’s forehead. The Crown Prince felt the similar anger growing and almost boiling inside him. He knew many nobles talked down about him behind and they’re still careful in case someone’s hearing them insulting the Crown Prince.
Yet, here Cale Henituse laid down casually on the bed, not giving any respect Alberu should be given.
Taking a deep breathe, Alberu increased his patience when dealing with his husband the notorious trash. Still with the same smile, Alberu asked, “Do you mind telling me what you’re talking with Royal Father?”
Cale finally looked at Alberu, expression flat, before it changed to the similar fake smile on Alberu’s smile.
“Oh my? I didn’t expect Your Highness is curious about my conversation with His Majesty.”
Alberu’s breathe hitched. He was about to retort back when Cale continued, “What to do? It’s a very private topic, though. I’m afraid His Majesty turns his back from us in the future if I do so.”
Alberu flinched, and so was Hans who was watching them from meters away.
For a few seconds Alberu composed himself and Hans taking a few steps back, Cale’s attention returned to his book.
“If that’s all Your Highness curious about, this humble one has nothing to say left. Don’t worry, I’ll sleep on your bed when I’m going to sleep.”
Flip. Alberu’s lips twitched when another page flipped. He tried his best on not raising his tone when he speak. He still had an image to take care of. A kind and understanding husband.
“I see. A private conversation. Thank you for telling me to not interfering your business, Cale.”
Cale stared when Alberu turned his heels, feeling weird about Alberu’s words. Did the Crown Prince plan to get passed into his boundaries? Not anymore.
“Ah.” Alberu turned his head, the smile seemed more dangerous. “How about you get ready to sleep now? As I’m going to sleep earlier.”
Cale was dumbfounded. ‘…did he get angry over that trivial matter? Just because I didn’t tell him about my talk with King Zed?’
In the end, Cale sighed and closed the book he read. “Hans, bring my pajama.”
Hans swiftly moved. “Right away, Young Master.”
‘That petty workaholic bastard. He wants to use his authority on me as revenge.’
That’s what Cale thought on Alberu telling him to sleep now. While he’s not completely wrong, Alberu actually tried to get used to Cale’s disrespect by sleeping on it.
Absurd, non-sense, but that’s what Alberu believed. The more he get used to, the less he felt agitated in the future.
Unfortunately, that’s not the case. But it’s for another story.
Right now, Alberu and Cale already on the bed, lights out. The servants already long gone and guards start patrolling and changing night shift.
Alberu looked to his side. Cale’s back was facing him, an arm was used as additional pillow on top the pillow.
“Cale, already asleep?”
A soft voice replying him.
“Not yet, Your Highness.”
Alberu blinked. Before marrying Cale, he thought he had to endure the smell of alcohol every time they’re together. However, Alberu had never meet Cale in drunk. Cale was always sober, clear-headed, and well-dressed most of time.
Except the one night he invited Cale to a supper.
Even that night, Cale didn’t drink much.
Alberu stared at Cale’s back. In the darkness, Cale looked much leaner than he assumed.
He always made prediction and most of it was wrong when it’s regarding Cale. He thought he would not be able to sleep because Cale’s going to sleep in his drunk state. Yet his husband always smelled nice and none of alcohol stench remained.
At this moment, he was actually relieved that none of his negative perception of Cale Henituse being realized. He’ll ask Tasha to guide Cale touring the palace tomorrow. It was impossible for Cale to stay in his room all day and all time. Cale was bound to familiarize himself and started working in this place by his side.
By the time he’s almost fall asleep, Alberu had a small smile.
“…this is the meeting room for noble’s gathering,… that’s the treasury room,… the administration works here,… the private library…”
Tasha’s words entering and exiting from his ears as she talked.
Cale remembered very well this palace’s structure. He knew where the ministers and administrations happening. He knew the people works in this place. He knew where Alberu’s new office going to be established in a couple of year. He knew where the jewelries for special occasions were kept. He knew the kitchen and garden. He also knew where he’ll be working in a couple of weeks.
“Your Highness the Prince Consort, do you want to ask something?”
Tasha’s question snapped Cale out of his thoughts and he gave a false smile. “No, Miss Tasha.”
Alberu’s aunt. The woman whose identity was hidden from everybody. Cale didn’t dare to be impolite to her as she’s the closest person to Alberu and had freedom to speak all what she wanted as they’re tied by blood called family.
All Cale needed to do was to be polite enough and not causing a trouble for her.
“Then, shall we go touring outside, now? We can tour the palace anytime, but the weather’s really good for walking.”
“Sure, I don’t mind.”
Cale followed her to outside, looking statues and gardens that’s actually indeed being taking care by the palace’s gardeners. Tasha didn’t explain much about the garden that’s visible from his room’s window other than ‘not really necessary’.
Then the long tour ended by returning to the palace and taking a break with the Crown Prince Alberu.
Cale blinked. Several times.
…since when Alberu Crossman taking a break from work?
Cale didn’t remember this happened very early. Sure, Alberu occasionally took a break, but not within his vicinity. At least, not when he’s not working in the palace yet.
Apparently Tasha brought Cale to Alberu’s office. Alberu decided to take a break and offered to have tea time together. While Tasha made the tea and prepared snacks, Alberu took a seat across Cale.
“How’s the tour? Is it tiring?” Alberu asked.
Cale blinked. “It isn’t. We didn’t check every room in the palace. Miss Tasha guided me to the rooms that’s for working or important rooms like treasury and storeroom.”
Alberu smiled. Still the artificial smile that’s for public stunt.
”Good. If you’re bored, you can walk around by yourself. Of course, don’t forget to ask Ben or another aide to guide you.”
”Thank you very much, Your Highness.”
Tasha poured tea for two of them. She bowed, then standing a few meters to allow them having privacy. Cale saw this and realized, that Tasha was very professional. She didn’t allow people to notice that she and Alberu were in fact, still blood-related.
If Cale didn’t coincidentally heard them talking familiarly, he wouldn’t know except Tasha was Alberu’s most trusted aide. He wondered if there’s more of Alberu family in this palace.
Cale took the cup of tea. He saw his face on the water reflection. His expression was almost empty. It was hard to not thinking about past. Not when he had prediction of what Alberu wanted to speak.
”I was planning to say this later, but because you’re already here, I’ll inform you now.” Alberu sipped the tea, not putting down the cup back to the table. “In four days, there’s a banquet celebrating the beginning of spring. It’s the opening for social season in the Roan Kingdom. It’ll be our first attending royal banquet as a couple. So, I hope you can cooperate well this time.”
There it was.
The first accident where Cale got hurt in the past.
Cale’s hand twitched, his grip on the teacup tightened up.
Spring Banquet, the beginning of social season in the Roan Kingdom. It was a yearly event that Cale Henituse ever attended once, after his debutante on 15 years old.
After that, he never joined any banquet which was organized by Royalty. His trashy behavior made his absent became something the nobles being grateful of.
“Four days later…? I haven’t prepare any clothes for it.”
Alberu’s widening smile ticked Cale’s uncomfortable feeling.
“Don’t worry, Cale. I’ve prepared everything you need. Just follow the guidance and it’ll be fine.”
Of course, this also happened in the past. Cale ignored his tightened chest and drank the tea in one big gulp.
Clack. The teacup was put down a bit loud. Cale stood up, smiling back with the same falseness.
“Sure. I’ll be present and wait for your assist when it comes.”
Cale left Alberu’s office without looking back. He didn’t want to know what kind of expression Alberu and Tasha had about his rudeness.
Night came and Alberu found his husband already lying on the bed as usual to sleep. Cale’s back was facing him. The same position they had been sleeping for several days.
Alberu carefully slid himself under the blanket and lying down, face facing the ceiling. A deep sigh came from his mouth.
‘This is not the marriage I’m imagining about.’
He turned his head, looking at Cale’s back again.
Their less than one week marriage life had turned into a repetitive action. A routine of formality. Alberu had a gut feeling this kind of marriage would not last.
Instead of flowing naturally and working together, Cale Henituse coped up in his room, not going out at all. He didn’t ask any trivial stuff, lest about administrative tasks that he could help as a Crown Prince Consort. Not that Cale had the obligation that he must do right away, but it seemed like Cale didn’t have any interest in politic.
Cale didn’t fight back when his stepbrother, Basen, pointed out as the next heir instead of him.
He meant, it was Cale’s birthright. Alberu could not understand why. He also could not ask Cale to know the reason.
If he didn’t ask his aunt to let Cale looking around the palace, Alberu bet Cale would not come out from his chamber at all.
Alberu didn’t want to force Cale. He had to observe more. Even if it meant breaking his routine a bit.
Unfortunately, he hadn’t had the chance to do so.
Days passed, and the Spring Banquet was right before their eyes.
Notes:
I was about to continue until early part of the banquet…. But I can’t. So, this rather boring chapter is updated first. I don’t want to hiatus again…
