‘Heizou likes strawberry mentos.’ Kuni thought, looking at the selection of candies in the convenience store. He knew Heizou liked strawberry mentos; he's seen him eat them often. More often than other candies, and the glimmer in his eyes whenever he bit into the candy was evident.
Kuni was never much of a fan of sweets, he much preferred other flavors, but… Heizou really likes these. He thought, turning the cylinder package in his hand. He sighed, walking up to the counter to make his purchase.
Heizou was in his office, beginning to get tired of this case. It was a cold case; it’d been static for almost a decade. It was just the kind of case he specialized in, and he’d been given this to do in his spare time. As per usual, the details were convoluted, clues were few, and any theories made were so out there they were hard to believe. Heizou sighed, closing up the file. Just then, he heard the door open. He stood and went into the kitchen to see who it was, although he had a hunch.
“Kuni!” He cheered when he saw the indigo haired boy toeing off his shoes by the door. The other had promised to come over when he had the time. Lucky for Heizou, that time was now. Kuni had a grocery bag, which he sat on the kitchen counter.
“Heizou.” Kuni said while he pulled an energy drink out of the bag.
“Get anything for me?” He asked, going to peek in the bag. There was another drink and a pack of gum.
“The other drink’s for you.” He paused. His hand hovered over the pocket. “That’s it.” He added. Heizou raised an eyebrow, watching as Kuni opened his drink.
“Okay…?” Heizou said, taking the drink from the bag. It was a Pacific Punch Monster. Kuni had the original green. Taurine, was it called? Heizou thought it tasted like ass. “Thanks Kuni.” He smiled, leaning over the counter to press a kiss to Kuni’s cheek. The latter turned his head so they could kiss properly, on the lips.
Kuni tasted like the energy drink he’d just opened, and something else Heizou couldn’t quite pinpoint. Something sweet, fruity maybe. He went in for another kiss, just to get another taste.
Kuni raised an eyebrow when Heizou pulled away, licking his lip to taste the remnants of the strange flavor. Heizou noticed and opened his drink. “You taste funny.”
Kuni rolled his eyes. “How?” He asked. There was a certain tone in his voice. ‘ He knows why. Probably did it on purpose.’ Heizou’s thoughts provided.
“Some sort of… fruity taste, along with that battery acid you’re drinking.” He said, taking a sip of his own drink.
“It tastes better than the shit you’re drinking.” Kuni quipped, obnoxiously taking another drink. Heizou rolled his eyes and prodded Kuni’s side.
Later that night, the two were on the couch, Kuni playing Animal Crossing on Heizou’s switch, cleaning up the island that Heizou rarely visited, and Heizou reading a book. Some sort of murder mystery. He had two main suspects, and he was five chapters in. Heizou laid underneath Kuni, his book resting on Kuni's head. Kuni’s chin dug into his chest, the switch on his collarbone.
Heizou had noticed whenever he happened to leave the room, he’d come back and Kuni would be stuffing something back into his pocket and chewing on something. He assumed it was the gum, but he didn’t smell minty in the slightest and he never got up to spit it out. Kuni wasn’t a fan of candy, so Heizou had no idea what it would be. Soon, he got curious.
He folded the corner of the page he was on and tossed the book to the side. He moved his palm to rest on the small of Kuni’s back. The latter looked over the switch, eyebrows raised slightly. Heizou pried the console from Kuni’s fingers and set it to the side.
Kuni wriggled closer, so his and Heizou’s lips could meet. He pressed their lips together, cradling Heizou’s head in his hands. Heizou smiled, wrapping his arms around Kuni’s torso. The kiss was slow, languid and sweet. A swipe of the tongue and Heizou found that Kuni tasted familiar. Gone was the taste of the drink he’d enjoyed earlier, now all that was there was the fruity taste Heizou had gotten a bit of earlier. Heizou pulled away just as Kuni’s hand slipped behind his neck.
“You taste familiar.” He stated.
Kuni rolled his eyes. “We kiss all the time.”
“Well, I know that. ” Heizou poked Kuni’s side. “You taste different, but I kinda recognize it.” He explained. “Did you eat something?”
Kuni’s cheeks were pink. He tugged on some hair, gently. He kept quiet, seemingly embarrassed about it. Heizou tilted his head with a smile.
“C’mon Kuni, it can’t be that embarrassing.”
“It totally is though.” Kuni sat up and nudged Heizou’s legs off the couch. Heizou followed suit. Kuni crossed his arms, huffing. Heizou snickered, earning him a scowl.
“I had some mentos, that’s all.”
Heizou’s eyebrows knit together. He recalled the taste. “Strawberry?” Kuni nodded. “But you hate strawberry mentos.”
Kuni was vehemently avoiding eye contact. He spoke quietly. “ You like them.”
“What was that?” Heizou asked.
“ You like strawberry mentos, I thought you’d like it if I tasted like them.” He muttered, cheeks red. “That’s a weird sentence.” He noted.
Heizou stared for a second. “For me?” He smiled. Kuni scowled again. “You’re too sweet Kuni.” He leaned in to capture Kuni’s lips in another kiss.
When they separated, Heizou cupped Kuni’s cheek. He was giddy as he said, “I do like it. I like it a lot.”
Heizou was at the store, his basket resting in the junction of his elbow. It was filled with the regular things, eggs, bread, lunch meat and an assortment of frozen foods. Now, he was browsing the candy aisle, thinking back to Kuni.
Kuni had started eating strawberry mentos regularly, just because he thought Heizou would like it. (Which was super cute, if you were to ask Heizou.)
Heizou wanted to return the favor.
He knew Kuni wasn’t an avid enjoyer of sweets. He was pretty much devoid of any sort of sweet tooth. But, Heizou did know that Kuni sometimes ate black licorice. Unluckily for Heizou, black licorice was absolutely vile and disgusting and the smell and taste and everything about it was gross.
But here he was, picking the black package off of the shelf and putting it in his basket. He groaned mentally at what he was doing and how dumb this was.
But it was so cute .
He groaned again, grabbing a box of energy drinks from a neighboring shelf.
“Heizou.” Kuni said inquisitively, pulling away from their kiss.
“Mh.” Heizou had his arms draped over Kuni’s shoulders, sitting on the counter. He was distracting Kuni as the latter was waiting for dinner to cook.
“You taste like licorice.” He observed.
“Weird.” Heizou shrugged, going back in for another kiss.
Kuni dodged the kiss with a laugh. “You’re stealing my thing, Hei.”
“Dunno what you’re talking about.” Heizou smirked.
“ You;” Kuni prodded Heizou’s chest, “have been eating black licorice, haven’t you.” Heizou shrugged, a grin across his lips. “You copied me, asshole.”
“Nuh uh.”
Kuni scoffed, pushing Heizou off of him to pull their food off the heat. Heizou leaned back on his palms.
“You can’t prove anything.” Heizou had a huge grin across his face. Kuni rolled his eyes.
“Whatever.” He shook his head. “You hate black licorice.” He plated their dinner, awaiting a response.
“You hate strawberry mentos.”
Kuni gave Heizou a look out of the corner of his eye. “What’s that got to do with anything?”
“You know.” Heizou was just being a brat now. Kuni scoffed.
“Fucking copycat.”
“Do you not like it?” Heizou asked.
Kuni shook his head. “Didn’t say that.”
“Okay then.” Heizou hopped off the counter. “Can I have dinner now?” He asked, batting his eyelashes.
Kuni handed him his plate. “Go sit down, you oaf.”
Heizou planted a kiss on Kuni’s cheek. “Thanks baby.” He made his way to the table with a smile. He took note of how Kuni’s ears went pink.
Both of them are lying in Kuni’s bed. Nothing interesting was going, they were just watching tv and messing with their phones. Heizou was draped over Kuni’s torso, his shirt being discarded earlier that night. Not due to anything nefarious, to Heizou’s chagrin, but Kuni’s room was warm. The latter was in boxers and an oversized graphic tee and chewing on some mentos.
Heizou flipped over, so he and Kuni were chest to chest. Kuni didn’t pay much attention to him, only threading his hand through Heizou’s hair. Heizou pushes Kuni’s phone down into Kuni’s chest, batting his eyelashes.
Kuni rolls his eyes and turns his phone off, letting Heizou cuddle up to him. Hei wrapped his arms around Kuni’s neck. Kuni smiled, putting his hands at the small of Heizou’s back.
“What was that for?” Kuni asked, a teasing undertone present in his words.
“Maybe I just wanted your attention.” Heizou muttered into the junction of Kuni’s neck and shoulder.
Kuni laughs a bit. “Okay.” He says. Heizou can hear the smile in his words. “Want some mentos?”
