Love is Stupid.

Summary:

"He's never going to actually give a shit about you!" You took a small step back as Hitoshi paced the living room, running his hands through his purple locks, disheveling them even more. "He's keeping you dangling on a fucking hook and you can't even see it! You're not fucking stupid, Y/N!" He'd never yelled at you like this.

Your heart was breaking as you stared at him, biting back tears. "You don't know that." You whispered, and your words sounded weak, even to yourself.

Hito laughed bitterly, pausing to plant his hands on his hips, shaking his head. "Whatever." He finally whispered, throwing his hands up in defeat. "I'm done being the shoulder you cry on when you find out he fucks someone else." He lifted his face to make eye contact with you, tears making his own eyes glisten. "It hurts too much." Before you could say a word, he'd stomped off to his room, slamming the door. Leaving you to crumble onto the couch, swallowing the lump in your throat.

Chapter Text

"I made you some coffee." You glanced over your shoulder as Hitoshi stumbled into the kitchen. It was almost 5 PM, but his work always had him out at crazy hours.

He hummed, coming up behind you to grab the mug you'd prepared for him. "You're an actual angel, Y/N." He grumbled, his voice thick with sleep.

You'd been friends with Shinsou since high school. You'd both started out in the General class, and while he'd been bumped to the Hero course, you'd remained where you were, more than happy to just be going to UA at all. Luckily, the two of you had remained close all through school and even after. And now you were housemates. You both also happened to keep a similar schedule. With your writing, you were able to stay up all night if you wanted, and that seemed to be when your brain worked the best. And Hito enjoyed working at night, too. So you woke up first, usually in time to make him breakfast and coffee, and by the time he came home (if you weren't off at your fuck buddy's house) you'd have dinner on the table for the both of you.

It worked out.

"Thank you, Hito." You hummed, chuckling as you turned towards him.

He was still in his sleep clothes, baggy sweatpants hanging low on his hips, a loose shirt covering what you knew were impressive muscles. The bags under his eyes were ever present, but that just seemed to be his natural state. "You almost done with the new book?" He asked, moving to sit at the table, smiling softly as you sat a plate in front of him. "Thanks, Kitten." He mumbled.

You nodded, sitting down across from him. "I've got a few more chapters, but I'm wrapping it up." You yawned a little, picking at your food. "I figure I can bang them out in the next couple of days." You sighed a little, glancing up as your phone vibrated.

Hitoshi's jaw ticked slightly. "I'm sure it's going to be great." He offered a lazy smile as he dug into his breakfast. "Thanks for the food, Kitten." You smiled warmly over at him.

No matter how many times he praised your cooking, it always felt good. "Thanks, Hito!" You cheered, scooping up your phone to check the message.

Hawks: Busy tonight, baby bird?

How exactly your... Relationship with Hawks had started was... Strange.

Hitoshi had forced you to the Hero Gala the year before, practically begging you to join him because he hated shit like that. So you'd come with him, happily conversing with his friends, eating and drinking. Hito had been number 10 and you'd practically screamed your throat raw in support of him. But after the gala had ended, while Hitoshi was talking to Denki, Hawks had swooped in, slipping his number into your palm, telling you how cute you were and then disappeared. From there... It had turned into more.

You hummed, biting into your breakfast, tapping out a reply.

Not too busy, what do you have in mind?

"I have the weekend off for once, wanna have a movie marathon?" Hitoshi's words snapped your attention up to him. You always loved your movie marathons! He'd forced you to watch the Matrix one weekend and it had become something of a tradition. Whenever he had a weekend free, you would both go full couch-potato in front of the TV, snacks, drinks, both of your cats randomly jumping between your laps. It was nice.

You nodded quickly, leaning forward. "Yes! It's my turn to pick so we have to watch the Hannibal trilogy!" Hito winced. "Don't make that face! I could be making you watch Twilight." You giggled as he groaned loudly.

"Fine, fine. Anything but that." He chuckled, his broad shoulders jumping as your phone buzzed again. His smile faded, eyes flicking to the sliding door that led to your balcony. "I'll pick up the snacks and stuff after work tonight." He whispered.

"Sounds good!" You chirped, eyes on your phone.

Hawks: Maybe some dinner and then back to my place?

You smiled, shimmying your shoulders as you pushed your half-eaten plate away from you. "He's taking you to dinner, I guess?" Hitoshi asked, his voice lazy as he glanced over at you.

"Yeah! This will be the first time we've actually gone out in a while." You mumbled, typing out a reply.

Sounds good! When do you want to meet up?

Hitoshi grit his teeth again. "Just be careful, Kitten. I need to get ready." He mumbled, picking up his plate and walking around the table, pressing a friendly kiss to the top of your head before dumping his plate in the sink and disappearing back into his room.

Unfortunately for your best friend, he'd been right there for the ups and down of your shitty relationship... Situationship with the hero. And he wasn't the biggest fan. Hitoshi would lightly press you to stop the whole thing, and you'd agree... Only to get a late text begging for one more chance and you could never say no. And sure, you had a few ideas about why you couldn't say no, but you refused to give them any thought. Therapy was expensive, being wanted for a few hours was cheap.

"Be safe, Hito." You called, looking over your shoulder as the large man shoved his feet into his boots.

He offered a small smile. "I'll always come home to you." He promised, chuckling as you grinned at him. That had been your send off for the past two years. As long as he was safe, you'd be happy.

"Well, don't you look gorgeous." You giggled as Hawks wrapped an arm around your hips, tugging you against him, his wings tucked against his back.

You had dressed up a bit. It had been quite a while since the two of you had a proper date so you wanted to look your best. "You don't look half bad yourself." You teased back, grinning up at the man as he dipped down to peck your cheek, setting your heart on fire.

There was just something about him that pulled you to him. No matter what happened, you always ended up snuggled in his arms. "Let's get some food, pretty bird." He cooed in your ear, smirking as you giggled, trying to pull away from him.

Luckily, you didn't have to wait to be seated, Hawks happily ordering a glass of wine for both of you. "How's work been?" You asked, voice gentle as you skimmed over the menu. You'd learned long ago to not even look at prices. He hated when you did that.

"Boring." He sighed a little. "A lot of rescuing cats and helping old ladies with their luggage." He grinned over at you. You chuckled, glancing up at him. And fuck, he was so beautiful. He'd stripped himself of his coat, leaving him in his tight black shirt, goggles missing, letting you look into his hypnotic eyes without the filter. "What about you, love? You just finished that book, didn't you?" He asked and you bit into your tongue.

The book he was talking about had been published for months now. "I actually already finished that one a few months ago. I'm onto a true crime book now." You said softly, ignoring the slight tug in your chest. He wasn't the best listener, but that was just part of him. "I have a couple more chapters to finish and send off to Aya." You correct him gently.

Hawks nodded, leaning his cheek against his fist, eyes locked onto you. "Sorry, I've been busy." He explained with a warm smile. You nodded slightly, brushing off his apology. "I bet the new one's going to do great." He reached over to grab your hand, rubbing his thumb over the back of your hand, making you grin.

The waitress hurried over to your table, Hawks quickly dropping your hand and pulling his into his lap. You bit back the awful feeling that tried to rise in your chest as you tucked your hands into your lap. He had a reputation to keep up, after all.

Letting out a sigh, you turned to look over at Hawks, his eyes closed as his wings twitched under the both of you. "Mind moving?" He mumbled. You quickly sat up so that he could pull them in. "Sorry, bird." He yawned. "They're sensitive." You nodded quickly. You should have moved on your own. You gently rubbed your hand over his chest, waiting to see what would happen.

It was always a toss-up. Some nights, he'd wrap you in his arms and force you to stay with him... Then there were nights like this. "I have to get up pretty early in the morning." Your stomach clenched as you nodded. He wanted you gone. Of course. His eyes opened slightly, offering you a warm smile. "I'm sorry." He whispered, reaching up to cup your cheek. "You free tomorrow night? We can cuddle." He promised.

But you shook your head a bit. "Sorry, my roommate and me have plans." You shakily stood up, searching the room for your clothes.

Hawks sat up a bit, watching you. "Oh. Maybe next weekend?" He asked.

And you bit your tongue. You always felt so dirty after nights like this. He took what he wanted and sent you on your way. It hurt more than you would ever admit. At least you'd be home before Hito so you could cry in peace. "Maybe." You called over your shoulder, pulling your underwear up your hips.

"Baby bird." Hawks's voice was warm as he watched you. "Don't be upset with me, please? I have to work."

You shook your head, pulling your dress up your body. "Of course not, Hawks. I know how busy you are." You promised, ignoring the burning in your chest as you leaned over the bed to give him a soft kiss. "I'll see you soon." You promised before scooping up your heels and all but running out the door of the high rise.

Stupid. You were stupid, but you didn't even know how to fix it.
