Fear and Fridays

Summary:

Those moments never seem big and yet they are. They are so unbelievably important that the burden of them would make Atlas yell out and throw the sky off of his back.

Or:
Kara cuts her hair and just for now, it doesn't feel important at all.

Work Text:

"Yeah, I think fear and Fridays got an awful lot in common, they are overdone and glorified and they always leave you wanting"

  - Zach Bryan

There are moments which feel as though they define your life. Graduation might serve as a perfect example. One day which steers you into one specific direction, wether it be to become a doctor, a cashier or a reporter.

Or your wedding day, which momentarily, legally binds you to one person, whom you promise to spend your life with, although the likelihood of that is less then fifty percent.

Still, it is those big moments which make you feel the gravity of the earth pulling you in, making you feel the blood cursing through your veins or your heart beating inside your chest.

People tend to neglect the small moments. The tiny moments which might mean just as much as the big ones.

A cup of coffee in the morning, perfectly brewed by your partner which reminds you how well they know you or a scraped knee after a run which takes you back to p.e. and silly excuses given to stern teachers.

Those moments never seem big and yet they are. They are so unbelievably important that the burden of them would make Atlas yell out and throw the sky off of his back.

The big moments are ones we are prepared for. They often come with a warning and turn out the way that we want them to. But those small, insignificant whispers of fate? They never give notice and they never offer advice. They are random and not always kind. To live them well or to live them terribly, they are what makes us, us.

Kara Danvers is not aware of this. As of now, she has been rereading one of Lena's books for the fifth time, trying to figure out why the main characters acted this stupid. Her glasses are sitting on the table next to her and from the phone on her right side, a compilation of instrumental guitar sounds can be heard.

From inside her flat, she can her the rain drumming against the window and somewhere in the corner of her room, there is a spider building her web. Kara has named her Jenny.

Jenny is a good roommate. She is quiet and patient. She does not question why Kara suddenly closes her book, drops it on her chest and let's herself fall against her pillow.

She does not think it is strange when Kara sighs deeply and stretches out her arms as if she has turned into a starfish.

She might think it to be a tiny bit weird when Kara starts to mouth different, entirely incoherent words, blabbering to herself and no one about nothing at all.

When the alien finally stops, she appears to be thinking more clearly and Jenny watches curiously as the young woman gets up with a new sense of purpose and struts towards the bathroom.

The spider does not follow Kara into the bathroom, if she had, she would have seen the blonde reaching for a pair of scissors.

It does not feel significant when the first strands of hair begin to fall into the sink. Or does not feel strange, nor weird, nor full of purpose.

Kara shrugs and continues to cut. The hair begins to pile up inside the sink and when she is finally finished, National City's most famous hero looks into the mirror and sees blue eyes stare back at her. Her face is slim and her jawline appears to be more prominent now that there are no long curls in the way. Still, it is not as cutting as Lena's.

To be fair, Kara always had had a softer look. When she runs her fingers through her short locks, she does not feel anything apart from a quiet sort of joy, which could be confused with simple contentment.

There is no rush to do anything else. So she stays for a moment and lets those new feelings settle down. Her head feels lighter and when Kara turns on the tab to let cold water run over her fingers to then let them glide through her her, she simply nods to herself.

Yes, this was a good decision.

The water is cooling on her scalp and with her now short her, the feeling lingers a lot longer then before. It calms her down. She looks at herself and smiles.

Kara Danvers with short her. It is not special. It feels much more predictable then most of the city's residence would guess.

If she were to ask Alex, her sister would probably say that this haircut has been long overdue and Nia would probably just smirk knowingly.

She is curious to see Lena's reaction but for tonight she feels content to settle back down.

When she leaves the bathroom, Jenny is still in her usual place and barely deems the blonde to be worthy of her time. So she has cut her hair? She wants to know when the rain will finally stop!

Kara lies down and reaches for her book. The music is still playing and solemn drops of water are racing down her window, eager to see who is the fastest.

No, there is absolutely nothing big about today. It is just a regular Friday, as most people would call it. For once, there are no one emergencies and work was done early and there is a book ready to be analyzed, taken apart and markered.

There is nothing unusual about today.

Tomorrow will be much more important. When she walks into the DEO and Alex stops her in tracks to ask about the new look or when Cat calls to ask her former assistant how she is going to continue to keep her identities separate with two suspiciously identical haircuts. Or when Lena's eyes darken at the view of Kara with short hair, blue jeans and a flannel and the two of them do not leave her flat for hours on end.

All those moments are big and important and life altering.

But right now? In her own apartment? Where Jenny is the only other soul watching, entirely uninterested in anything that is not a fly?

Kara Danvers feels like the most normal alien on earth.
