Chapter Text

“Champ. Champ, come out here and help me with the groceries please!” Waverly shouted when she got out of her jeep outside her boyfriend’s trailer on his parents’ property.

She opened her trunk and pulled out a couple of bags before looking back at the trailer. The trailer was rocking slightly in the wind. It had been so windy that day. Other than that there was no movement inside the trailer but Champs truck was parked haphazardly beside it.

Lazy asshole, she thought to herself with a groan assuming the man was asleep. It wasn’t uncommon for her boyfriend to be asleep in the middle of the afternoon. He rarely held a job for any length of time. That’s why Waverly would buy him groceries once in a while.

She opened the door with her key and groaned in frustration as the door stuck in its frame again and kicked the base to get it to open.

“Goddammit, Champ, are you ever gonna fix this fudging door?” She called out as she placed the shopping on the messy counter and rolled her eyes when she saw the stacks of unwashed dishes and rolled her eyes when she didn’t get a response.

How was that man surprised she didn’t want to let him move in with her?

She made for the bedroom and reached out to pull open the door when her ears perked up and she paused.

“Oh... Champ... oh... yeah...” she heard coming from behind the thin door and the omega growled.

Waverly pulled open the door and found her asshole boyfriend humping her bitch of a friend, Stephanie. The blond woman on the bed smirked when she met Waverly’s eyes before she faked a gasp.

“Oh Gods, Waverly! Oh no.” She cried out unconvincingly and the beta male turned around and grimaced.

“Ugh... shit... Baby, its not what it looks like!” Champ said lamely and Waverly arched her brow and scoffed.

“Seriously?”

“Look, Waves, you ain’t gonna do better than me and we both know . How about you strip and join us?” He grinned lecherously and patted the messy bed. “I’ll rock your world.”

Waverly’s inner wolf gagged as the omega began to laugh loudly.

“Oh, Champ, you are barely rocking this trailer.” She turned and grabbed the shopping bags before going out to her Jeep. When the engine roared, she pushed her foot down and spun the vehicle around as fast as she could, accidentally slamming the side against the man’s Barbecue, sending it flying and falling to the ground, crumpling into a twisted pill of metal.

“Oops.” Waverly imitated Stephanie’s faux surprised as she flew down the dirt road and headed for home.

She decided to call her sister and smiled when Wynonna answered.

“Yo, Baby Girl, what is up?” the beta woman greeted. “I thought you were busy with The Chump?”

“I gave him and his Barbecue their walking papers. I am going home to get drunk and eat pizza. You in?” Waverly asked.

“Oooo...kay... give me an hour, I’m helping Nedley out with something.”

“I hope you aren’t giving him a hard time, Wynonna.”

Her sister gasped in mock indignation. “I would NEVER. Shame on you. Make sure we have whiskey. See you soon.” The line went dead and Waverly smiled before letting out a long exhale.

10 minutes later Waverly pulled up outside the Earp Homestead, a small, wooden, 2 storey cabin not far from the ancient lynch gate that was planted at the entrance to the 5 acres of Earp own land. She parked beside the rundown barn and got out of her jeep. She checked the damage made by the barbecue and blew out a sigh of relief when she saw it was just a slight dent and lots of scratches she was sure would be an easy repair.

Waverly loved their little house. It was a bit drafty and old, having been built by the sisters great, great grandfather during the frontier age, housed every generation since and then was abandoned for two decades. The omega had been pleasantly surprised the house was still standing when she and Wynonna decided to make the building habitable a year ago after Wynonna’s divorce and move into it with the beta’s daughter Alice.

It had taken a lot of hard work but it was worth it. Waverly had been sick of renting the small apartment over the bar in town and it would be nice to work on the project together after years of living apart. The house was now cosy and warmly decorated. It may not be the nicest house but it was a work in progress. Waverly planned on using the summer vacation to attempt to repanel the house. And plant a vegetable garden with her uncle’s help.

Waverly carried her purchases inside and put them away in their small, tidy kitchen as she hummed happily to herself.

Waverly Earp was a 30 year old High-school history teacher as well as a weekend bartender in her family’s saloon in the small country town in north west Canada. Most people in town loved the pretty, charming omega who was also known as the Nicest Person in Purgatory town.

She was a hard worker and very kind hearted but one thing Waverly had never had was luck in relationships. She had dated most of the available men and women in this town and none of them lasted long, even the ones who she had given a second chance to. Like Champ.

They had dated senior year but he had cheated on her with some of the girls in their year but he had spent over a decade begging for a 2nd chance. A couple of months ago she had agreed, thinking he probably had grown up even though she saw how he was every weekend.

Wynonna, their Aunt and Uncle, and most of Waverly’s friends thought she was insane for rekindling the relationship but honestly she had really regretted it. He was boarish and lazy, too interested in his looks and women. She had planned on dumping him if he didn’t grow up anyway. She had enough of relationships anyway.

There was one thing she was bothered by. Waverly desperately wanted to be a mother someday but she had imagined she would have a partner to have a family with. The work load on a single mother was brutal and while Waverly was still young, if she had to wait to find Mr or Mrs Right, it might never happen, but she didn’t want to have a child with just anyone.

She might not be able to afford adoption because the steep legal fees and as a single woman she might be over looked in favour of Couples.

As well as that Waverly knew how tough it was for single parents and she was worried if she would be able to do it. It would be much easier with a partner to help with the finances and the load.

Ever since she had been a little girl, she had wanted pups of her own.

She just didn’t have time to travel and possibly meet someone. Between the High-school, the Saloon and minding Alice, as well as the renovations and redecorating of the Homestead, she barely had any time to herself.

Waverly shook herself off as she heard her sister’s motorbike coming up the road and pulled 2 large tumblers from the cabinet before filling them half up with a hefty, healthy measure of Whisky in each.

When Wynonna came in, Waverly went to hand her the glass but paused.

“Doc pick Alice up?” the omega asked, making sure neither of them had any further responsibilities for the evening. The Beta nodded and thanked Waverly for the drink.

“He collected her from school and is taking her to the city to the movies and he will drop her home on Sunday evening. He sends his love.” The wild haired brunette said before taking a hearty mouthful.

Waverly smiled and took a swig of her own. She was proud of her sister. Wynonna and her ex husband had had an amicable divorce and stayed good friends throughout. It had been hard on them but they realised it wasn’t working. They mutually decided to call it a day and promised to always put Alice first.

It broke Waverly’s heart because she could see how much they loved each other but was proud of the couple. Doc, Wynonna’s ex and Alice’s sire, was roguishly handsome with a devil may care attitude but beneath his odd fashion choices which had him looking like an extra in a wild West film he had a heart of gold. He was still very much part of the family.

“So what are we celebrating? It’s not like you to hit the hard stuff before sundown.” Wynonna closely looked at her sister to check if the omega was OK but the younger woman seemed fine.

“I’m celebrating losing 200lbs of dead weight.” Waverly winked and Wynonna whooped.

“You dumped the Chump?”

“Yep, and I ran over his Grill after I caught him in bed with Stephanie.” Waverly went on to fill her sister in on the entire story and the Beta laughed.

“I’m proud of you, Baby Girl, but you know he’s probably gonna whinge to Sheriff Nedley, right?”

“Of course but Randy won’t take him seriously and is he really going to arrest his deputy’s sister?” Waverly giggled as Wynonna nodded.

“You need to find yourself a decent guy or girl, Waves.” The beta said and the omega rolled her eyes.

“Purgatory equals limited dating options, Wy. Besides, I think it’s better I stay single for a while.” Waverly shrugged.

“You should visit Chrissy in the Big City for a few days,” Wynonna suggested, speaking of Waverly’s best friend and Sheriff Nedley’s daughter, “it would be good for you to get away.”

“I really don’t have time. I’ll be minding Alice during the summer holidays.” Waverly said and her sister waved dismissively.

“Gus and Doc are both taking her for a week each so you’ll have plenty of time. Just call her, Waves, you deserve a break.” The blue eyed woman told her before they made for the living room and put on a movie while they drank and talked into the night.

The following morning Waverly woke up with a hangover. She grabbed her reusable water bottle from the bedside locker and opened the draw to pull out some pain killers. She then dozed for another hour before grumbling unhappily when her phone began to ring.

She glanced at the screen and huffed

“Did Wynonna call you?” she asked when she answered the facetime call and saw Chrissy give her a questioning look.

“Why would Wynonna call me? Is everything alright? You look hungover to fuck, Waves.”

“Everything is fine. What’s up?” Waverly yawned, sitting up and running her fingers through her messy hair.

“I’m coming back to town tonight. Are you working?”

“Yeah but we can catch up and have a drink. Gus won’t mind.” It had been months since the friends had seen each other in the flesh but they called and texted often.

When they said goodbye Waverly decided to get up and have a long hot shower before she got on with grading papers. She loved her job but she had more homework now than she did when she was in High-school. Between her history classes she also taught French and one Latin class. She knew multiple languages and had a degree in ancient languages.

Wynonna had already left for work and Waverly knew she wouldn’t have a hangover. The beta rarely suffered from them.

Waverly had enjoyed their evening together. They rarely got time to spend one on one with each other where they could gossip without little ears hearing them. It had been so nice.

Waverly and Wynonna had always been close but they had always felt a piece was missing after their older sister, Willa, had died in a car accident along with their father many years before. Wynonna and Waverly had been so young when they died but shortly after the funeral their mother, Michelle, left town. Their aunt and uncle had taken them in and given the pair a loving home but it hadn’t been the same.

Wynonna had spent her teens rebelling and for a time Waverly worried Nedley would arrest her sister but after some travel Wynonna had settled down and had gone to the Police academy. That had surprised many.

Waverly had sunk into herself and books when her sister had left. The omega was an intelligent girl and quiet so stayed out of trouble. Really her one negative was her shit taste in men and that was more to do with the small population of Purgatory.

When it was time for her to drive into town and she had changed into her uniform for the saloon, a short crop top that showed off her defined abdomen and thin waist and a pair of tight skinny jeans that showed off her deceptively long but shapely legs, she jumped in her jeep and made for town.
