Work Text:

She was going to die.

He had punished yet another sinner.

January 1, 2004.

Her final day.

Light stared at his watch. He was curious about how she would choose to die. Would she jump from a building? Drown herself? Just thinking about it was thrilling. But he couldn’t follow her, obviously. Misora Naomi would journey to her death alone in 32 seconds. Just 33 seconds. 34…

“If you don’t mind me asking, why do you keep checking your watch?”

35…

36…

37…

Light met her eyes, “Oh, this? Well, I guess it’s because…”

38…

39…

40.

“Because I’m Kira.”

As Light uttered those words, the world seemed to stop. Naomi froze in front of him, snow falling gently on her shoulders. Her eyes went blank, and Light couldn’t hold back the smile on his face.

He had defeated her without making the Shinigami Eye Deal. He outsmarted her and evaded capture yet again. He truly was God, wasn’t he?

After a few seconds, she turned and began to walk away.

“What’s the matter?” Light asked.

“There’s something I have to do.”

Light hummed and pulled out his phone, flipping it open. “My father’s cell phone might be available now. Do you wanna see if you can talk to him?”

Naomi didn’t stop moving. “No thank you. I have nothing to say to him.”

“Goodbye, Naomi Misora.”

Yes, this was an amazing way to ring in the New Year.

. . .

Somewhere in the woods, Naomi continued walking. She winded through the trees as the cool wind sang in her ears, carrying her black hair in the breeze.

Snow still coated the ground, disrupted by the tracks from her boots. It was freezing, but she couldn’t care less in her current state.

She had a job to do.

In one of her hands, she held a can of gasoline. In the other, a box of matches.

Every fiber of her being was telling her to run, to get out. She had to escape. Light was Kira. L had to know. She had to tell him.

But she couldn’t.

She went deeper into the woods, where no one could find her. There were no paths and no directions pointing anywhere. She was on her own. Nobody came out here anymore, so it was perfect.

It was wrong.

Perfect.

Wrong.

Perfectly wrong.

It took her a while to find the perfect spot. She didn’t know how long, exactly. Time hardly mattered to her. She was already dead at this point.

She poured the gasoline over herself. The liquid stuck to her skin and clung to her leather jacket. She hadn’t bothered to take it off.

Somewhere, far away from here, a couple had their first kiss as they watched the countdown to midnight. Glasses clinked over dinner, toasting to their bright futures. Fireworks boomed in the sky, painting it with the most brilliant colors.

And back in Japan, Naomi’s body went up in flames under that same sky, never to be found.

Oh, what a beautiful year this would be.
