Chapter 1: Chapter 1 - Amidst Japan’s Summer heat

Chapter Text

It was supposed to be a field trip to one of Japan’s historical places; The Butterfly Estate. The well-known estate that stood for hundreds of years, healed hundreds and thousands of patients. It housed a lot of people and well-known nurses with skills that spanned decades.

It also housed a lot of rumors about how it’s haunted. People would say they would hear the wails of injured soldiers and scratching within the old, withering doors. It was well preserved but time wears it down. Hinami sits on a cobblestoned bench outside the Butterfly mansion’s garden as she sips her Lemon juice.

It’s summer and she was tired walking all around the halls of the Butterfly Mansion. The place was huge and they were only halfway done. She kicked the pebbles on her feet, lost in thought when she felt a hand on her shoulders. She looked up and saw her friend, Ria pouting down at her.

“I’ve been calling you out for a while now but you were ignoring me!” Ria said and crossed her arms. Hinami smiled sheepishly. “Sorry Ria, I was tired and got lost in thought. What’s up?” Ria grinned and pointed at the group waiting behind her.

“We’re going to hit the training grounds. Wanna come?” Hinami sweatdropped. She was exhausted walking all day! She shook her head with a wry smile. “You guys go ahead. I’m just going to rest for a while. I’ll catch up on you guys in a while.” She winked. Ria tilted her head and sighed.

“Suit yourself. We’ll wait for you before lunch!” Ria said and waved before running off with the group. Hinami smiled and waved wordlessly. Hinami watched the group disappear from afar and sighed wistfully. She closed her eyes and basked herself with the cold, refreshing wind, removing all the summer heat on her flushed cheeks.

She doesn’t know how long she has been sitting down but she heard a rustle on her right, making her open her Fuschia eyes. She whipped her head on her right and saw a man wearing a modified Gakuran jacket and hakama pants; dark head coverings with white linings, and a paper-like mask with three dark lines tied around their face.

Hinami blinked. The man blinked back at her and hurried inside the Butterfly Manion’s halls. The thundering footsteps rang around the halls until it stopped momentarily. Hinami blinked and found herself staring at the Man’s pale green cat eyes. ‘He came back.’ Hinami thought.

The man said nothing but only stared at her. He whipped his head back to the empty, dark halls and back to her. As if beckoning her to follow him. Hinami furrowed her eyebrows in curiosity and distrust. Nevertheless, she stood up and dusted her uniform. She hesitantly followed the man who skidded down the hall. She hopped on the wooden floors and saw an empty hallway.

She rubbed her eyes and face palmed in disbelief. Japan’s summer heat is making her see things. She was about to go back to sit down when she saw the familiar pale green eyes staring back at her at the end of the hall, as if waiting for her. She bit her lips and walked down the hall calmly. The man walked down the other hall in a hurry. She rounded up the corner and saw another empty hall.

It was a deadend. There’s no doors or windows for the man to disappear to. She visibly gulped. She remembered all the rumors about the place being haunted and she rubbed her head in disbelief. “Okay… Well that’s quite fun playing tag with a ghost…” she mumbled and started walking back to exit the hall when she felt hands grab her wrist.

She cried out in shock and stared flabbergasted at the arm that seemed to seep from the wall. With a sharp gasp, she felt herself being pulled towards the wall and everything went dark. Her drink fell off her grasp as she disappeared within the gray, withering walls.

Ria jogged back to where her friend was sitting and blinked. She was met with an empty seat. Eyebrows furrowed as she entered the establishment. She remembered the teacher telling them to never enter the establishment but she needed to find her friend or she would be left by the bus. “Hinami?” she called out and stopped walking. There was no Hinami but only a spilled lemon juice that seemed to have already dried up a long time ago.

Chapter 2: Chapter 2 - Taishō Japan?

Summary:

Bright flames flared around her, and a white cape swept around her, wrapping her in warmth and safety. A figure stood before her, tall and strong, shielding her from the attack.

His broad back blocked the demon from the view. Then came a scream. The demon cried out in agony— and disintegrated into ashes. She watched, stunned, as she stared at the man who saved her.

Chapter Text

She yelped, the sound sharp and startled, as her body lurched through what felt like a solid wall. Her face drained of color, a stark portrait of shock and disbelief. Blinding white light engulfed her vision, forcing a gasp from her lips. Her limbs moved instinctively, stumbling forward along the glowing path, led—no, tugged—by an unseen arm.

Her foot caught on a thick root, and she tumbled down with a thud. The floor beneath her creaked loudly, old and falling apart. Damp and dusty, it felt like no one had stepped there in years. Holes dotted the wood, and a chill clung to the air around her.

Carefully, she pressed her hand to the damp floor, the cold soaking into her skin. As her vision slowly adjusted, the space around her came into focus—and she froze.

She was inside what looked like the remains of a hut. Its roof was gone, and its wooden walls had aged into the twisting trunk of a tall wisteria tree. Purple petals drifted down from high above, soft and steady. Though the tree was full of life, the hut around it felt forgotten.

She turned, hoping to find the hallway she’d come from. Instead, there was only a rotting wall—no door, no way back.

“What is this place…?” she whispered, her voice shaky.

She moved to sit up and winced. Her leg throbbed painfully. It was sprained. “Just great, how can I walk with a bad leg?” she muttered, trying to steady herself. With effort, she limped outside the rotting hut.

She walked slowly, realizing it was still nighttime. The air was quiet, as she walked down the path. What could have felt like hours, she found herself in what looked like a village. Her noise twitched in discomfort. ‘ Something feels off.’ She thought.

The streets were lined with decorations—as if a festival had just happened—but now, everything was silent. No voices, No movements, except the flickering of the bonfire in the center of the town.

She knocked on several doors, hoping to find someone who could help her. No one came to her aid. She was about to lose hope when suddenly, a metallic clang echoed from a shed nearby. Her heart pummeled down her chest, her head whipping towards the source.

“Someone might be there… I need to find out where I am.” She said, hurrying towards the shed. She pushed the shed door open carefully, trying not to make a noise. The sight in front of her petrified her. She stood frozen, unable to move, as her eyes locked onto the creature who is crouched in the middle of the room, gnawing on what looks like a corpse.

The corpse’s blue, lifeless eyes stared back at her, as she swallowed a gasp. The demon’s ears twitched as he heard a soft gasp behind him. His nose caught the scent of fresh blood, and he turned quickly, eyes locking onto her. A grin spread across his face.

“Oh?” he said, voice gentle, but chilling. “I didn’t know there were still snacks hiding. Can’t let them spoil now, can I?” He rose to his full height, his figure looming over her. In one hand, he held a severed arm, blood still dripping to the ground.

She backed away, stumbling as the demon crept toward her. Suddenly, it lunged with terrifying speed. She dove to the side and landed hard to her side. She cried out in pain. Gritting her teeth, she got up and ran, ignoring the pain on her leg.

“Come back here, little girl! It’s futile to run!” the demon yelled, crawling after her. The demon grabbed her leg, and she screamed, kicking her legs wildly. The demon lifted her upside down, tears streamed down her face as she stared at the unnaturally large jaws of the demon inching closer to her neck.

“N-No…” she whispered, heart pounding. With a burst of courage, she swung her bad leg and kicked the demon square in the face. She gritted her teeth as she felt a jolt of sharp pain. ‘Bad idea!’

The demon flew back, surprised, and she dropped to the ground. “Ack!” she gasped, clutching her leg. ‘Mom, thanks for forcing me to learn Muay Thai!’ she thought, eyes wide in fear at the demon sitting back up. She was able to stall him from eating her!

“You brat!” the demon roared, lunging towards her. Her injured leg refused to budge, as she closed her eyes, bracing for the worst— when suddenly heat filled the air.

The man quickly put away his sword and knelt beside Hinami, his eyes filled with concern. “Are you okay? Are you hurt?” he asked, glancing at her injured leg.

“A-Ah—” Hinami began, but he gently lifted her into his arms before she could finish. “W-What are you doing?” She asked in surprise.

“Your leg looks bad,” he replied, adjusting his grip to keep her comfortable. “We need to treat it soon, or you might not be able to walk again. You’re safe now. I’m here.”

Overwhelmed by fear and pain, tears began falling from Hinami’s eyes. She held onto him, quietly sobbing. His gaze softened and rested a hand behind her head, whispering again, “I’m here.”

With swift steps, he carried her through the forest towards the Butterfly Mansion. Thankfully, it was only a few hours away. Hinami found herself drifting into unconsciousness.

A man with short black hair and a mint green cloak stumbled through a wall into a familiar courtyard. His hand was still stretched behind him as he let out a shaky breath, feeling dizzy from crossing through limbo. He clutched his head, his strength was fading, and his blood demon art was weakening.

Bringing the girl back had been difficult. But she was important—maybe the key to defeating Muzan. That secret ran through her blood, and he was determined to protect her for the sake of his lady… and the world.

Then he felt it. His hand was empty. Eyes wide, he turned around. The girl he had been holding—gone. She must have slipped away somewhere during the jump through time.

He stood frozen. Then the panic hit him. “Damn it!” he shouted. “Why does nothing ever go the way it’s supposed to?!” His voice echoed through the night, answered only by the cry of ravens circling overhead.
