Let's Take Things Fast

Summary:

Shadow followed the pulsing beat, beat, beat, ears swiveling towards the commotion as he drew near. And when he breached the trees, there it was.

The Tiki Tavern was an eccentric nightclub, just as Sonic had described. Like something Shadow would see in any major city, but this one was on the beach. It was surrounded by palms. Made from them too, by the looks of it.

There was a tiki bar that overlooked the ocean. As for the rest of the place, it faded into your typical Green Hill shack. But this one was decked out in posters, announcements, flyers that Shadow couldn’t read from such a distance.

The place was a madhouse. The bar was clambering with Mobians, and there was cheering coming from inside. The music was so loud, the earth vibrated beneath Shadow's feet.

And the line..

The line was wrapping around the building. No way.

“Damn it, Sonic.” Shadow sneered to himself. He couldn't believe he was really doing this.

He parked his motorcycle near the tree-line. Slipped the green Chaos Emeralds from his quill, and set his sights on the club. “Chaos Control.”

- This fic is a completed one-shot!
- It takes place like 10-ish years after the current timeline
- It's not compliant to any specific canon! I just take the characters and their world and run with it.
- Sonic and his friends live in Green Hill, while Shadow and his team are in Westopolis.
- Sonic and Shadow have built a friendlier bond throughout the years-
..but this fic escalates things quite a bit 😳

Work Text:

With Westopolis in his rear view mirror, Shadow kicked off towards Green Hill. But this was no joyride. Shadow was on a mission.

It’s been a week since the fall of the Eggman Empire. Behind the scenes, Robotnik was no doubt already scrambling scrap metal to start anew. But in the meantime, Mobians rejoiced.

It was a time of celebration across the lands. Peace was fleeting. Shadow knew this more than anyone. But amidst the wreckage of their greatest foe, even Shadow managed to let his guard down for a moment. And it costed him a weeks worth of restless sleep.

Shadow had fought alongside Sonic to take down The Doctor. He and Sonic don’t always see eye to eye, but their power when combined proved to be unstoppable time and time again.

He’s no stranger to sharing victories with his old rival. And over the years, their team-ups have only grown more frequent. More friendly.

In the old days, Sonic would congratulate Shadow for their handiwork. Offer him a brisk, ‘See ya around,’ before zipping away.

But lately he’s been acting different. Touchier.

Shadow sped past wreckage of an old Robotnik factory, and memories from months prior came rushing back to him.

“Another Egghead Empire factory down,” Sonic had grinned. “Thanks for the assist, man.”

It began with a harmless punch to the shoulder. One that Shadow had learned to recognize as a friendly gesture.

“What was that for?” Shadow frowned.

“Nothing. Just a little bruise to remember me by.” Sonic had grinned. “See ‘ya, buddy!”

Shadow had been too caught off guard to retaliate. Watched Sonic speed away in a flash of blue light. But they were so not even.

They’d met countless times since, usually rallying together to stop their common enemy. Eventually, their typical banter grew more frequent, more friendly. More - charged, as Rouge had once described. But nothing compared to last week.

It was when he and Sonic defeated Eggman. After his last factory had been reduced to rubble, and they were left to survey their handiwork as the flames died out.

“You know, we don’t always have to meet on the battlefield.” Sonic had said. “We make a pretty good pair.”

Shadow kept his arms crossed. “Unlikely, hedgehog. I prefer to be alone.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Sonic chided.

Shadow’s heart had lurched when Sonic leaned closer, let their shoulders brush.

“But, hey. If you ever decide you wanna be alone.. together. You know where to find me.”

“Hmph.” Shadow crossed his arms. Hadn’t really processed what he’d said yet, too busy trying to keep it under control ‘cause Sonic was looking at him strangely, and -

“Ah- See ‘ya around, Shads.” He smiled.

Brisk and fleeting, like the wind. He was gone with a blur.

And Shadow was left overlooking the wreckage, heart thrumming in his chest.

That instance was enough to get Shadow’s full attention. It also caught the interest of his roommate, Rouge, who perked up when Shadow relayed this information to her.

It was a couple days ago. He, Rouge, and Omega were lugging about their apartment, frankly unsure of what to do with themselves since Robotnik was no longer posing an immediate threat. No word from G.U.N., no missions at all.

So Shadow lounged on the couch with Rouge as she painted her nails. She was catching up with her reality TV shows. And by the third episode, Shadow’s begrudging facade had all but vanished. Completely absorbed.

But it had so many damn commercials, and all this stupid relationship drama was making him think about Sonic of all things. So he spilled to Rouge, needed to update someone about the way Sonic’s been acting lately.

“He’s being as obvious as it gets!” Rouge had said. “I know you live for the chase, Shadow. But if you keep playing hard to get, I’m going to lose my mind. I know you like him too, so you should stop running in circles.”

Shadow frowned at the memory. His heart was thrumming in his throat, adrenalized simply from reliving it all. He’s been playing in Shadow’s mind on a loop - Sonic, Sonic, Sonic. It’s irritating. It’s distracting. Seems like another tactic to throw him off guard, but he’s wise enough to have learned that Sonic’s not capable of that. He’s a pretty genuine guy.

Shadow wasn’t playing hard to get. He was just - Well, he wasn’t great at this.

Unfortunately that memory doesn’t end there. And it’s why Shadow’s on the road to begin with -

As Shadow and Rouge were gossiping, Shadow’s wrist walkie started to ring. He frowned down at the Caller ID, and Rouge gasped over his shoulder.

Shadow had answered. He shouldn’t have answered the damn phone.

“Sonic.” Shadow greeted.

“Hey, Shads.”

“What do you want.” Shadow frowned.

“Sheesh, good to hear from you too.” Sonic said.

Rouge smacked Shadow over the ear. Shadow glared at her.

“So there’s this party.” Sonic had said.

Shadow crossed his arms. “Pass.”

Rouge covered her mouth.

“Hang on, dude!” Sonic laughed. “You gotta hear me out first.”

“I don’t care what the details are.” As he spoke, Shadow’s ears swiveled in the walkie’s direction.

“It’s on Friday.” Sonic said. “Green Hill is throwing a party to celebrate the fall of Eggman, and you’re half the reason he’s defeated. I want you to come!”

Rouge looked at the walkie, wide-eyed.

Shadow sighed. “I don’t really do parties.”

“Yeah, I know.” Sonic said. “Given the timing, party’s gonna be pretty intense. So it’s totally cool if that’s not your thing.”

Shadow glared at his walkie.

“But hey! If you do manage to get your sorry butt over here, just know I’ll make the journey worth your while.”

Shadow scoffed. “What have you got in mind?”

“Guess you’ll have to find out..” Sonic said. “Talk later!”

Rouge was left gaping down at Shadow’s walkie. “You have to go!”

“I’m not going.”

Well, now it’s Friday. And Shadow is, predictably, going.

Shadow snarled, heart pounding at the mere recollection. His palms were sweating beneath his gloves. He gripped the handles of his motorcycle tight, claws flexing - threatening to pierce through fabric.

This was madness.

He tore down the worn out path. Rode until city turned to desert, and desert into tropics.

He could use Chaos Control to travel, sure. But he was riding to clear his mind. Unfortunately, the closer he got to Green Hill, the more muddy it felt. It was humid - hotter here, but it’s like Shadow could feel it in his blood.

The forest was lush here. White sand beaches were free of debris, and the ocean that roared against the shore rolled fresh air from the open ocean. It was clean. Beautiful. Just how Sonic likes it.

With only remnants of fallen bots remaining, the peninsula had all but recovered from Doctor Eggman’s latest onslaught.

As sunset painted the sky a deep magenta, Shadow tore past the familiar worn out sign that read ‘WELCOME TO GREEN HILL ZONE’. The sign spun around in Shadow’s wake.

Damn it. He was really going. Shadow couldn’t believe what he was thinking. Had lost himself, gone soft over memories of his old rival.

He still didn’t know where the damn party was, and there’s no way in Hell he’s calling Sonic for help. There’s only one person who he turned to in times like this.

He hit the ‘call’ button on his bike like second nature.

“Rouge.” Shadow said. “Come in, Rouge.”

Palm trees flew by. The checkerboard road faded into dirt, as Shadow turned to take the coastal route. He didn’t want to get too far into Green Hill without knowing where his target was most likely to be.

“Rouge.” Shadow repeated. “Come in-“

“Hi, handsome,” Rouge’s voice was scratchy with bad reception. “Look, you know I love you. But I’m a little busy, so if we could keep this brief-“

“I’m going.” Shadow said through gritted teeth.

“What?” Rouge replied.

“I’m going to crash that damn party.” Shadow said.

“Didn’t see that coming.” Rouge teased.

“I’m going to level that place until I find Sonic. Make him pay for what he’s done to my sleep schedule.”

“My, my, you two have interesting foreplay.” Shadow could hear the smirk in her tone.

“I can’t stop.. thinking about what he said.” Shadow’s voice was calculating. Level and cool, despite the way his heart leapt at his own words. What the Hell was wrong with him? “I feel like I’m going insane.”

“I’m not surprised, darling. You know, Spring is in full swing now.” Rouge replied, sultry as ever. “It’s only natural for your libido to drive you little batty.”

“Hmph.” Shadow gripped his motorcycle, tight. “This so called Mating Season can’t affect me. I am the Ultimate Life Form.”

“Yeah, yeah…” Rouge dismissed. “Either way. Sounds like you’ve got a good old fashioned crush, Loverboy.”

Shadow grimaced. That was worse.

“And you’d be smart to act on it.” Rouge said, “Because unlike you, Sonic’s not immune to a good time. And Spring is in the air..”

“Yeah, yeah, I get it.” Shadow huffed. “Like I said, I’m going to confront Sonic. I just need some more information.”

“Confront-“

“Ask Knuckles where the damn party is being held.” Shadow said.

Rouge chuckled nervously. “Knuckles?

Shadow couldn’t help the grin that crept onto his face. With reception this scratchy, there’s no other place Rouge could be right now other than Angel Island.

Rouge and Knuckles are fiery rivals throughout the year, but the first week of Spring is always so predictable for them.

“What makes you think-“

“No doubt the party’s gonna be hosted it at the Tiki Tavern tonight. It’s a solo nightclub on the north beach,” Knuckles’s voice came through the radio. “Any party worth mentioning is hosted there. Sonic wouldn’t miss it.”

“Hmph,” Shadow smirked. Bingo.

“You two are the worst.” Rouge groaned.

“Rouge..” Shadow said, “Omega doesn’t have free rein of the apartment right now, does he?”

“Well..” Rouge laughed. “Look, he’ll be alright on his own for a little while. He can handle himself.”

Shadow shook his head, idly. “Last time we left him alone, he almost burned the place to the ground.”

“That’s back when he thought our Roomba bot was a threat!” Rouge defended. “Honestly, Shadow, he’s probably relieved to have the place to himself for once.”

“Why’s that.” Shadow frowned.

“You know how much he talks about our Roomba nowadays,” Rouge poked. “They finally have some alone time.”

Okay,” Shadow exhaled through his nose. “I’ll be purging that from my mind.”

Rouge laughed, and Shadow rolled his eyes.

“Alright.” Shadow was getting close to his destination, “I’ll let you two get back to jewel hunting. Tell Knuckles I’ll kill him if he does anything out of line.”

“You’re on speaker,” Rouge replied.

“Back at’cha.” Knuckles said, “You lay a finger on Sonic, and I’ll serve you a fresh knuckle sandwich.”

Shadow grinned. “No promises.”

“Better behave yourself, handsome.” Rouge chided.

The radio clicked off, and Shadow was left with the chorus of whipping wind and crashing waves. With a destination in mind, he kicked his bike into high gear and sped towards the north beach.

Shadow heard the Tiki Tavern before he saw it. Followed the pulsing beat, beat, beat, ears swiveling as he drew near. And when he breached the trees, there it was.

It was an eccentric nightclub. Like something Shadow would see in any major city, but this one was on the beach. It was surrounded by palms. Made from them too, by the looks of it.

There was a tiki bar that overlooked the ocean. As for the rest of the place, it faded into your typical Green Hill shack. But this one was decked out in posters, announcements, flyers that Shadow couldn’t see from such a distance.

The place was a madhouse. The bar was clambering with Mobians, and Shadow could hear cheering coming from inside. The music was so loud, the earth vibrated beneath his feet.

And the line..

The line was wrapping around the building. No way.

Sonic,” Shadow sneered to himself. “Knuckles had better be right about this place.”

Shadow parked his bike near the tree-line. Slipped the green chaos emeralds from his quills, set his sights on the club, and muttered a quick, “Chaos Control.”

The volume shift was staggering. Hypnotic and abrasive, and the walls shook with its energy. Shadow flattened his ears.

He’d teleported into some sort of corridor. Posters were slapped crooked on the walls. There was framed artwork, too, but mostly just carvings and garish writing.

He stuffed the green Chaos Emerald back in his quills. Leaned against the wall to get his bearings, catch his breath, but grew woozy on the inhale. He slapped a hand over his nose.

His eyes widened.

It smelt - really strong in here. Good. Too good.

Shadow’s not naive. He’s solo’d his fair share of mating seasons, and avoided rowdy social gatheringsat all costs. Combining the two at once is a recipe for mayhem. A recipe for-

A blue flash caught the corner of Shadow’s eye. Far down the corridor, way out on the dance floor.

Sonic.” Shadow’s jaw set. Shadow regained his footing. Took a shallow breath. He’s unstoppable. He’s not going to let a damn dance floor get between him and his target.

Shadow took a deep breath, and - Chaos, that was a mistake. Parting crowds? No problem. Usually. But the scent in this place was so strong.

Shadow broke into a sweat. Got his knees weak, his jaws watering. Pressure gathering, thick and heavy, and -

Panicking, Shadow spun around and pushed down the hall.

The faraway clink of glass and running water told Shadow he was somewhere near the bar’s kitchen, which means -

Shadow skated down the hallway, crashing into bodies and scanning the signs on the wall until he found the bathroom. He threw it open with his fist, and pushed on -

“Whoa!” A silver hedgehog flattened himself against the sink while he sped by.

“Leave me.” Shadow dismissed. He threw a stall door closed behind him, and collapsed on the toilet seat.

Shadow? Chaos, you sure know how to make an entrance!” Silver laughed, breathy. “Hi!”

Nobody had noticed. Shadow’s blood was racing in his ears. He preferred to keep to himself. Mostly hung out in cities, so he’s never really acclimated to Spring heat in the wild. Being thrown into the midst of it all - it was a shock to the system.

Shadow huffed.

This whole tavern smelled like sweat and pheromones. So many Mobians in heat, congregated in one place. He didn’t know how anyone survived this place.

Shadow glared down at himself. He hadn’t even gotten to the dance floor yet, and his cock was threatening to unsheathe. Pulsed between his legs, peeking just enough to be indecent. Shadow took a deep breath, willed himself to settle down, but that damn smell was everywhere-

“Hey, uh. Are you okay?” Silver’s voice sounded from the left of his stall. Probably still standing by the sinks.

“Fine.” Shadow squeezed his eyes shut. Not Silver. The last thing he needed was a familiar face witnessing him in this place.

“Okay..” Silver said. “If you need some water or anything, I can get you some.”

Shadow took a few shallow breaths. Fought every urge to touch himself, but Shadow knew that’ll just make it worse. Once he’s got a taste for it, he’s relentless. He needed to find Sonic and get him alone.

Get him alone? Out of here. Get him out of here. To talk. What was he going to talk to Sonic about, again?

Shadow wanted to claw his eyes out. He can not think about Sonic right now.

“-the drinks here are pretty strong. They don’t make ‘em like that in the future!”

Oh, Silver was still talking.

“I can’t get drunk, dumbass.” Shadow sneered.

“Oh,” Silver’s voice fell off. “Okay.. I’m glad you’re feeling alright, then. You kinda rushed in here, so I thought..”

“Nah.” Shadow concluded. “I’m good.”

“Cool,” Silver said.

Shadow exhaled, slow. His blood was still surging in his ears, pounding in his chest, and his cock pulsed with the beat. Shadow closed his eyes. Spread his knees, cause any friction made it worse. Shadow clenched his fists, his muscles. Held his breath, and -

He saw Sonic in his mind’s eye.

Shadow wanted to bring Sonic to his knees. Bend him over. He wanted to wrap his hands around Sonic’s waist, and -

Shadow’s eyes shot open. A bead of sweat dripped down his forehead, woozy with budding arousal. He groaned. Dropped his head in his hands.

“Seriously, though, you alright?” Silver’s voice shattered his spiraling thoughts.

“What are you still doing here?” Shadow sneered.

“Oh!” Silver said. “I’m celebrating Eggman’s defeat, like everyone else! The future’s safe for now, so I’m kicking back in Green Hill for a couple weeks. Call it vacation, I guess!”

What are you still doing here, outside my stall. Shadow held his face in his hands.

“But to be honest, I didn’t expect this party to be so.. Intense. I’ve got, like, jet-lag. From the future.”

Shadow raised a brow.

“I totally forgot what time of year it was.” Silver filled the silence, “So I’m hanging back from the thick of it. Folks who live here are more used to the, uh. You know. Commotion. But I’m not.”

Shadow peeked through his fingers. He could see Silver’s signature boots from below the stall door, still standing by the sinks.

“It was fun for awhile, but I’m probably gonna bounce soon. Blaze and I have been here for a couple hours, and I’m beat.” Silver yawned, “Plus, I - ah. Can feel my suppressants starting to wear off. They’re no use.”

Shadow’s ears perked. “Suppressants?”

“Yeah, uh. You know - heat suppressants.” Silver gave a nervous chuckle. He cleared his throat. “The bouncers were giving ‘em away at the entrance - for anyone unprepared.“

Shadow squeezed his eyes shut. Of course they were. Shadow’s rarely needed to take heat suppressants, and when he does, they never really work. Genetically, Shadow’s not all hedgehog, so they only repress a small percentage of his instincts. Still.

“Honestly, I don’t know why they plan such big parties during mating season,” Silver rambled. “I guess most find it thrilling, but everyone’s out there grinding on the dance floor and.. Man.”

Shadow gritted his teeth. “..You don’t happen to have a spare, do you?”

“A spa-“ Silver gasped. “Oh. Shadow! Did you Chaos Control in here?”

What?” Shadow locked his jaw.

I was kinda wondering how you got past the bouncer.” Silver murmured to himself.

Shadow rolled his eyes. “I can hear you.”

“Okay, uh..” Silver sighed. “Oh, man. I was saving this one for an emergency, but I’m leaving soon anyways, so. Okay.”

Silver stuck his hand under the stall. In the middle of his palm, there was a tiny pink pill. “Here.”

Shadow blinked. He took it, quietly.

Something like relief swept through Shadow’s body. He knew from experience that his body didn’t respond much to these weak all-purpose suppressants, but whatever. Maybe the placebo will be enough to get him out of this stall.

“They were freebies, so - Y’know. They only last like an hour.” Silver chuckled, nervous. “They’re fast acting, though. So you should be feeling back to normal in no time.”

“..Thanks,” Shadow said.

“Don’t mention it.” Silver replied, cheerful.

“I won’t.” Shadow replied.

Silver exhaled, heartily. Then said, “Oh, wait. You can’t see me. I just zipped my lips.”

Shadow scoffed. He dry-swallowed the pill.

He took a shaky breath. Looked, puzzled, at the cup of water that floated under his stall. It had a blue glow to it, a telltale sign of Silver’s telekinesis.

“To wash it down?” Silver said.

“Hmph.” Shadow swiped the tiny cup. Tipped and poured it all over his face. He didn’t realize how hot he’d gotten.

“Alright.” Silver said. “I’m gonna head out and find Blaze. We’re gonna stick around for Sonic’s speech, then head out.”

Sonic’s speech?

“I’ll see’ya later, okay, Shadow?” Silver said. “And - Oh! Congrats again on defeating Eggman - again.”

“Mmh,” Shadow replied, dry.

“See you around!” Silver said.

And with the squeak of a door-hinge, Shadow was left alone.

Left alone to glare at his cock, which twitched back to life at the mere mention of his damn blue rival.

It was going to be a long night.

♡ ♡ ♡

The suppressants had taken about ten minutes to kick in. Shadow didn’t know how much time he had, so he used this opportunity to search.

The place was manageable. Still hypnotic, but not nearly as all-consuming as it was before. He was able to breeze past the corridor, and braved his way through the dance floor.

Silver was right about this place. Even with his suppressants, Shadow had to breathe shallow. The dance floor was a mosh pit of swaying bodies, twirling and grinding all around him.

Shadow kept bumping into other Mobians. Amidst the strobing lights, Shadow got flashes of pairs making out, and even more were grinding to the beat. Dizzying grunge metal with a strong base that shook beneath Shadow’s feet.

Shadow tried to tune out the sights, focus on the music. But he was surrounded by so much noise, chattering and moaning, and the beat seemed to slow. Thick and syrupy, and Shadow gritted his teeth. Pushed on.

Dizzy with the drums, the hypnotic beat, beat, beat - Caught a glimpse of another pair grinding to it. Completely lost in one another.

Shadow spun around. Crashed into some feline chick who took the incident in stride. She was completely shirtless, save for x-shaped tape over her nipples.

“Sonic?” Her ears perked.

Shadow hated the way his heart lurched at the mention of Sonic’s name.

“Oh! Sorry, I thought-“ The girl yelled over the music. Then she paused. Gazed up and down at Shadow with wide eyes. “Damn, you are a hottie, though. Are you-“

“No.” Shadow frowned.

He pushed her aside and skated on. He had his sights set on one in particular. Where was that damn hedgehog?

This was madness. Sonic was nowhere to be found, and Shadow’s walkie wasn’t even working. No reception in this madhouse, no way to get ahold of him.

Shadow shouldn’t be looking for him anyways. He’d traveled all this way - Hell, Sonic can come find him.

Exhausted from the commotion, Shadow hauled himself onto the nearest empty barstool. Needed a second to ground himself, and -

Shadow stilled. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of unmistakable pink quills. He thought about booking it. The last thing he needed was another familiar face, but -

She casted a side glance, then threw her arms out with a cheerful, “Sonic!

Shadow bristled. “Get off me!”

“Oh, goodness!” Amy covered her face, “Shadow, it’s just you. I’m sorry.”

“Tch. Charmed.” Shadow frowned.

Heh.” Amy chuckled, nervous. “I just didn’t expect to see ‘ya here. That’s all.”

Shadow exhaled, slow.

“Why.. Are you here?” Amy leaned in.

Shadow frowned. Too exhausted to dance around her, so. “Same reason you are-“

“Looking for love?” Amy leaned in.

“-Looking for Sonic.”

They spoke at the same time. Shadow didn’t like the way she was looking at him now.

“Oh!” Amy brightened up. “If you’re looking for Sonic, he’s not here anymore.”

“What?” Shadow bristled.

“Whoa, calm down! He’s here, I mean - He’s backstage. Preparing for his speech.”

“His speech?” Shadow echoed.

Amy nodded. Her quills had gotten longer since the last time Shadow saw her. They curled around her shoulders, now. She still wore her signature headband, but was trying a new color tonight. A pleasant sea green, just like the dress she wore. But when Shadow leaned in, his nose crinkled.

“Hey, I see you!” Amy said.

“Wh-“

“That nose of yours is twitching like mad! I know what you’re up to and the answer is no.” Amy tilted her chin up.

“Trust me, it’s mutual.” Shadow made a face. Didn’t mean for it to come off that way. “I was only thinking about how off-putting you smelled.”

Any gasped. “Well that’s rude!” She exclaimed, “For the record, I could say the same about you.”

“Glad we’re on the same page.” Shadow spat.

“Hmph!” Amy and Shadow crossed their arms together.

Which is right when the bartender walked up to them. “Can I get you two anything to drink?”

Amy hummed. “A strawberry daiquiri, please.”

The bartender looked Shadow’s direction. “And you?”

Shadow grimaced. His body wouldn’t allow him to catch a buzz, but.. He does know someone who likes a drink to loosen up, so. “One coconut cocktail.”

The bartender flashed them a smile and scribbled on their notepad. “One strawberry daiquiri, one coconut cocktail. On it!”

When the bartender turned away, Shadow looked over at Amy. She had her nose up, and was very interested in reading the menu, now.

Shadow sighed. Bickering with Sonic’s friends wasn’t going to earn him any points. And Amy didn’t mean any harm, so. Damn it.

“I wasn’t checking you out.” Shadow clarified. “You do look nice tonight, though.”

Amy peered over at him. When their eyes met, she flashed him a smile. “Really?”

“The parties aren’t like this in Westopolis.” Shadow said. He had to speak louder than usual to be heard over the music.

“Yeah.” Amy smiled. “For Mobians, rural areas tend to have the, uh. Wilder gatherings. Especially around this time of year.“

“Mmh.” Shadow nodded.

“Most of us call the Tiki Tavern ‘The Jungle’ because of its lawless reputation.” Amy glanced over her shoulder at the sea of bodies. “On Fridays, anything goes, really. And since we’re in the thick of mating season, it’s a hot spot.”

“I’ve noted.” Shadow crossed his leg. And typically, it wouldn’t bother him. Others can do as they please, but Shadow’s fighting his instincts like mad. The pheromones in this place were unbelievably distracting, even after Silver’s suppressant. “Sonic neglected to tell me that information when he invited me.”

Amy giggled. “Welcome to dealing with Sonic.”

Which is when the bartender came through with their drinks. They slid one to Shadow, the other to Amy, then smiled. “Enjoy!”

When the bartender left, Shadow cleared his throat. “Tell me about Sonic’s speech.”

“Oh!” Amy said. “The band that’s playing tonight is up and coming, so they invited Sonic to guest for them. To build excitement and draw in a crowd.”

Shadow took a sip of the cocktail. Flattened his ears at the flavor. Sonic had weird taste.

“And with the Fall of Eggman, Sonic’s been in the mood to celebrate.”

Shadow nodded.

“Usually Sonic’s a big party animal.” Amy pursed her lips. “But he’s been unusually reserved this year. I’m thinking he wants to start settling down soon.”

“Mmh.” Shadow said. Stirred the drink. “I doubt it. Sonic’s free as the wind. You can’t tie that spirit down.”

“You can find love and still be free, y’know.” Amy said.

Shadow’s brows furrowed. He took another sip of the unpleasant cocktail.

“I think Sonic has his eyes on someone.” Amy said. “Something’s different about him, I can feel it.”

Shadow opened his mouth to speak, but- The music had suddenly dipped to a low hum. The crowd’s bustle fell silent, and -

Hel-lo party animals of Green Hill!

Shadow’s heart shot into his throat at the sound of Sonic’s voice booming over a mic. And the cheers that followed his words were deafening.

Gritting his fangs, he spun around to find Sonic the Hedgehog across the dance floor, standing up on the band’s stage. Mic stand in hand, the spotlight shone directly on him while a couple Mobians fidgeted with their instruments behind him.

Sonic’s quills were disheveled. Still his signature look, but messy - like he’d been dancing for hours before Shadow showed up. It’s been no more than a week since Shadow saw him, but the sight of him filled Shadow with a pleasant warmth. Not that unbearable heat, but a much kinder swell in his chest. It was way worse.

“Thanks, everyone, for gathering to celebrate the fall of Doctor Egghead Robuttnik!”

Shadow rolled his eyes. On second thought, why was he even here.

“Eggman’s been threatening our land for years, always rushing in with his bots and machines. But as long as I’m still kickin’, you can be sure of one thing - I’ll keep this planet safe.”

The crowd cheered him along, and Sonic yelled over the commotion. “And I plan to do so for generations!”

Sonic waited for the crowd to die down.

“I’m standing up here alone, but I can’t take full credit for his defeat!” Sonic said, “None of it would be possible without the help of my friends. Tails’s brains, Knuckles’s brawn, and the ruthless Shadow. Did you know he has a super form too?”

A chorus of cheers grew deafening, and Shadow glanced around the bar. His face grew hot at the reception. He didn’t know this many people knew of him, much less liked him.

Amidst the commotion, Amy waved her arms. “He’s right h-“

Shadow slapped a hand over Amy’s mouth. The last thing he needed were all eyes on him, and he sure as hell wasn’t in a position to take the spotlight.

Only Sonic took notice of the outburst. Scanned the crowd, and Shadow’s heart jumped when their eyes met. Sonic’s face lit up. He smiled at him, winked. Carried on with his speech.

Shadow sighed with relief. Grateful for Sonic’s newfound ability to read a room.

“You should be on stage with him.” Amy pouted to Shadow. “You helped defeat Eggman, too.”

“Nah.” Shadow said. “Public image, heroic speeches.. That’s his thing. I much prefer assisting from the shadows. He knows that.”

“-And a shout to the cleanup crews who are taking care of the factory debris and robot remains. Let’s get these shores clean, am I right?”

Shadow’s ears flattened against another chorus of cheers.

“So with formalities out of the way, let’s keep this party pumping!” Sonic raised the mic, and the whole crowd started hollering- jumping. Damn, this place was eating him up. “Make way for the band of the evening! The Radical Rodents!”

The crowd’s noise was deafening. Sonic tossed his mic to presumably the lead singer, and dove off stage. Struck a pose before crashing into the sea of bodies, and Shadow had to laugh. Shook his head.

When he turned back, Amy was looking at him.

“What?” Shadow’s ears flattened, defensive.

“Are you drunk?” She squinted.

Shadow scoffed. A weird thing to ask in a club, but it would explain away the heat that he can’t seem to shake from his face, so. “Yeah.” He lied.

He took a sip of his cocktail for good measure, fixed on the blue streaks that zipped through the dance floor. Amidst the commotion, the band had kicked off their show but Shadow hardly noticed.

“I’m gonna go dance!” Amy yelled. “Come with me!”

“I’m good-“ Shadow waved her off.

“Come onn, you can push our way to the front row!” Amy coaxed.

Shadow kept his eye on the crowd. “Hmph. So can you.”

“Point taken.” Amy flexed. Then she giggled and waved behind her. “See ya, Shadow!”

She scampered off to find Sonic, surely. But Shadow saw what Amy didn’t. Lounging on the barstool, it was easy to spot the blur that streaked through the crowd. Drawing nearer and nearer and -

Shadow’s heart leapt into his throat. In a flash, his target was pushing through the sea of bodies with a big smile on his face. Fortunately, the crowd was too fixed on the band to pay them any mind.

They locked eyes, and all of Shadow’s mental rehearsing was for naught.

“Shadow!” Sonic exclaimed. “Hey!”

He must have stolen some party favors from the guests. He looked ridiculous now. Was sporting heart-shaped sunglasses, party beads around his neck, and his gloves -

They were fingerless. Shadow tried not to appear too distracted by that fact. Shadow was raised by humans. And to be honest, he still didn’t completely understand the Mobian taboo of showing your hands.

But it must be in his blood, because the sight made Shadow’s heart race. Tonight was not his night.

Shadow swallowed when Sonic zipped right beside him. He leaned over the tiki bar’s counter, tail swaying. Shadow almost had to look away.

“You made it!” Sonic’s ears perked. Then he leaned in, smirking. “Been thinking about what I said?”

“With the Doctor off my radar,” Shadow replied. “I have much more time to kill.” Shadow replied, cool. He took a sip of the cocktail, then slid it over to Sonic.

“Hmm,” Sonic pinched the straw and stirred it. Took a hearty drink, seemingly pleased with the flavor. “Well, welcome back to Green Hill, buddy! I missed ‘ya.”

“You’re quite the star around here.” Shadow replied.

“Heh..” Sonic scratched his cheek. “I know my speech was pretty lame, but the band asked me to do an opening announcement. Plus, I want the townsfolk to feel as secure as possible!”

“Yeah.” Shadow said. “But we all know what comes next.”

“Yeah, yeah..” Sonic smirked. “Egghead inevitably rebuilds his army..”

“That’s the way it goes.” Shadow replied.

“But hey. We’ll be there to stop him again when he does.”

Shadow gave a single nod of affirmation, arms crossed.

“You look like you’ve been through it!” Sonic smirked. “How’s the night been treating you? It’s a jungle out there, huh?”

Shadow sneered. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“No?” Sonic rocked his hips, smirking that stupid smartass smirk. His tail was wagging. “Too cool for Spring, Shads?”

Heat rushed to Shadow’s face. He snarled at him, opened his mouth to reply, but -

A pair of identical lavender bandicoots pushed through the crowd of bodies. The girls rushed forward, practically tripping over their own shoes. They flanked Sonic, whose ears shot up at the attention.

Hey, Sonic.” Perci greeted. She skimmed her hand up and down Sonic’s arm, then settled for teasing her fingers beneath the rim of his glove.

“Whoa-“ Sonic tried for a smile, “Hi, Stac - er, Perci.”

“We’ve been searching everywhere for you.” Staci nuzzled under Sonic’s chin.

“You’re impossible to catch.” Perci frowned.

Ain’t that the truth. Shadow scowled at the lot of them.

Staci kissed his cheek, and Sonic turned a shade redder. She giggled. “But such a catch, isn’t he?”

“L-Listen, ladies,” Sonic pulled his arm away. Shrugged Staci away, too. He met Shadow’s gaze, which was fierce in the club’s lowlight. “I’m ah- It’s nice to see you both again, but I’m kinda busy here.”

“Too busy for us?” Staci said.

The attention didn’t come as a surprise to Shadow. Sonic has always been charismatic, and he’d spent his youth garnering a heroic reputation. And since the fall of the Eggman Empire, his reputation only grew. He was beloved by most, and feared only by his enemies.

And Shadow’s not naive. Sonic is too fast for love, but he’s certainly not too fast for a good time.

As Rouge had mentioned, it was mating season. Most Mobians were here to hook up, and most of them have eyes for his target.

It was only shocking that Sonic wasn’t eating it up like he usually does.

“Do you mind?” Shadow intervened.

The girls turned their attention at the sound of his voice. Their eyes lit up, like they just realized he was there. “Sonic! I didn’t know you had a twin, too.”

Shadow rolled his eyes. “We look nothing alike.”

“Staci, Perci..” Sonic scratched the back of his head. “You’ve heard about Shadow. Without him, Eggman would still be kickin!”

“Whoa. Are you, like, Sonic’s cousin or something?” One of them asked.

“Eugh.” Shadow rolled his eyes. “We look nothing alike.“

Sonic smiled. The girls looked at each other. Shrugged.

Cool.” Staci twirled her quills. Looked him up and down.

Perci tugged on the hem of Sonic’s glove, but her gaze was fixed on the ebony hedgehog. “Are you into double trouble, too, Shadow?”

By the pale look that crossed Shadow’s face, it was time to intervene.

“Whoa, whoa. Look, ladies-“ Sonic swatted them away. “I’m not really.. looking for any kind of fling this year.”

“Ugh!” Staci frowned. “Really? Knuckles and now you?”

Knuckles?” Sonic put a hand on his hip.

“Yeah,” Perci crossed her arms. “He’s not here. He must be going steady with someone.”

“Yeah,” Sonic smirked. “He’s in a pretty tight relationship with those Emeralds of his.”

Sonic and Shadow’s eyes met. Shadow actually scoffed, but rolled his eyes for good measure.

“What’s your deal, Sonic?” Staci asked. “Didn’t you say you were too fast for love?”

“Hey, who said anything about love?“ Sonic rubbed his nose. His cheeks flushed beneath their watchful eyes.

Perci gasped. “You are in love with someone, aren’t you?”

“Oh Chaos,” Staci added, “Did Amy finally break you down?”

“Amy! No way!” Sonic wiggled free. “Look, I don’t wanna talk about it. And thanks for the offer, ladies, but I’m ah-“

He’s not interested.” Shadow bristled.

The whole trio’s gaze snapped over to him, ears perked. Sonic smiled at him.

“Leave us.” Shadow dismissed.

The girls frowned at each other. “Whatever..”

“Heh. See ya around!” Sonic waved. As the girls melded into the crowd, Sonic hopped onto the barstool next to Shadow.

“Sheesh. Mating season, am I right?” Sonic chuckled.

“I am immune to aphrodisiacs.” Shadow replied. No idea why he lied - Maybe he didn’t want Sonic to know how much this place was getting under his skin.

“What?” Sonic laughed. This guy.

“That supposed aroma everyone keeps gossiping about,” Shadow elaborated. “The chemical that’s making all of you fools act like animals.”

“I know what you meant,” Sonic said, “Just- Well, you’re really not affected? Even a little?”

Sonic helped himself to Shadow’s drink again. Their fingers brushed, and goosebumps made Shadow’s fur stand on end. He moved his arm away. Stuck his nose up. “When I’ve set my sights on a goal, nothing else matters.”

“Huh. Cheers to that.” Sonic grinned. “Thanks for the assist, either way. Tonight’s been crazy.”

“I didn’t exactly do it for you.” Shadow frowned.

Sonic sighed, smiling. He took a swig of Shadow’s cocktail. Then his ears perked, pleased with the flavor. “I didn’t think you liked cocktails, Shads.”

Shadow met his gaze. “I don’t.”

“Then how’d you end up with this?” Sonic laughed.

When Shadow’s face scrunched up, Sonic blinked at him. Looked back at the drink. Oh.

“You can have the rest.” Shadow dismissed.

Sonic’s cheeks got a little flushed. “Huh. Thanks, man.”

“Don’t mention it,” Shadow rested his hand on his cheek. “Ever.”

“Are there any drinks you like?” Sonic stirred up the cocktail. He took another sip, couldn’t help himself apparently. “Or does your - ultimate life form - body, like. Eliminate toxins? Can you even catch a buzz?”

“Nah.” Shadow leaned against the bar. “I can’t get drunk, but I do like the taste of vodka.”

Sonic gave him a look.

Shadow raised a brow.

“Alright! So you didn’t come here for the world renown drinks.” Sonic said. He leaned against the bar counter. “What are you here for?”

“Straight to the point, huh?” Shadow crossed his arms. Tried to stifle his heart, which was thrumming so hard, he’s somehow convinced Sonic could hear it.

“No point in wasting time,” Sonic shrugged.

Shadow took a steady breath, tried to focus on anything but the club’s hypnotic beat, and how sweet Sonic smelled. Those damn suppressants from Silver weren’t doing enough. Not with Sonic leaning in so close. Not with Sonic looking like that. With his tail rocking, bouncing with the club’s hypnotic beat, beat, beat-

Shadow swallowed, thick. Beneath his gloves, his claws splintered the bar counter. Sonic’s eyes widened.

“…I need your help,” Shadow admitted. “And.. You need mine.”

“I need your help?” Sonic leaned in. It was dizzying, that smell. And it was coming directly from Sonic. Got Shadow’s blood pumping in his ears, got his heart racing.

“Yes.” Shadow gritted.

Sonic reached out, glided his fingers up Shadow’s chest fur- “Go on.”

Sonic’s claws tensed, just a little. Grazed Shadow’s chest, got him woozy, quills prickling, blood rushing, and -

Sonic could surely feel his heart, now. Beating like a mouse, like a mere rodent beneath Sonic’s palm. Putty in his damn hands. Shadow’s no lovesick rodent, he’s the Ultimate Life Form.

Shadow growled. He grabbed the beads around Sonic’s neck. Hauled him in, and Sonic made some noise that was barely drowned out by the club’s tempo.

“Don’t play games with me, hedgehog.” Shadow snarled. “You know why I’m here.”

Sonic’s face was priceless. He opened his mouth to speak when -

“Sonic!”

“A-Amy!” Sonic took a step back, but Amy pounced on him anyways.

“Your speech was amazing!” Amy grinned.

“Yeesh!” Sonic pried her off. “Remember the boundary bubble we talked about, Amy! The bubble!”

Unfazed, Amy regained her footing. “I’m so proud of you!” She smiled, then looked at Shadow. “Both of you.”

Tch,” Shadow casted a sidelong glance.

“Thanks, Ames.” Sonic smiled, itching his cheek.

“You guys wanna come dance with me?” She smiled, bouncing in place.

“..Tempting offer,” Sonic threw a thumb over his shoulder. “But Shadow and I were about to hit the road.”

“What?” Amy exclaimed. “You’re leaving already? The band just started!”

Shadow tuned out their conversation. He was beginning to overheat again. Tried to keep it under control, but it was undeniable that Silver’s damn suppressant was wearing off. His vision grew blurry around the edges, hard to concentrate on anything but that coiling desire that surged through him. Could hardly breathe.

Shadow took a shallow breath. Wiped his forehead. The suppressants were weak. And pills never did much to help Shadow, anyways. Not when half his blood was alien, a thick and carnal desire that no Mobian pill could ever hope to contain.

Then Sonic was shaking his shoulder.

“Hey, Shad-slow!” Sonic smiled. “Wanna get some fresh air?”

Shadow inhaled deep, exhaled smooth. Tried his best not to make a show of it, but it helped to put all the commotion behind him.

The sun was almost finished setting, and it washed Green Hill with vibrant oranges, pinks. This time, Shadow welcomed the chorus of insects in the bushes, birds in the trees. Anything but the crowd of Mobians in heat.

“Whew!” Sonic pumped the air. “Welcome to the jungle, city boy! Initiation complete!”

“I’m never coming back.” Shadow frowned. The pair walked across the grassy lot, wandered towards the tree line where Shadow had parked his motorcycle.

“Heh!” Sonic bumped into him. Their shoulders grazed, quills brushing, and it brought Shadow down to earth. “You’ll be back.”

“Unlikely. But I’m not leaving yet.” Shadow said. He raised a brow at Sonic. “You’ve yet to make the journey worth my while.”

Oh.” Sonic’s ears perked. He swallowed. “Right.”

“So I was thinking..” Shadow glided his fingers along the hood of his motorcycle. “Let’s race.”

“Oh, now we’re talkin’!” Sonic grinned. He dropped down, grabbed his toes. Stretched left, right, and Shadow couldn’t look away.

He threw his leg over his bike. Sneering, cause any sort of friction wasn’t doing him any favors, not when Sonic’s right here. Away from the Tiki Tavern, and that aroma was still all around him. Got stuck in his nose, tickled his throat, drove him mad.

“Wait, you’re gonna race me on that slow hunk of metal?” Sonic exclaimed.

Shadow glared at him.

“I mean, sure!” Sonic spread his hands. “We can take things slow. If that’s what you want.”

“We both know slow isn’t your style, Sonic.” Shadow smirked. “And it’s not mine, either.”

Sonic’s ears perked. Shadow tried not to look at his wagging tail.

“I’ve made some adjustments to her engine,” Shadow said, “I think even you’ll approve.”

Sonic cocked his head. Tapped his foot.

“Powered by Tails’s latest serum, she’s faster than ever. And-“ Shadow smacked the metal surface. “Eco-friendly.”

“Huh,” Sonic zipped around the machine. “Alright! Why not. But get ready to eat my dust.”

“Hmph. We’ll see about that.” Shadow said. He revved the engine to life. “Even with a home field advantage, you’ve got nothing on me.”

“South beach.” Sonic smiled. “On go.”

Sonic revved up. Shadow’s engine roared to life.

It was a blur. An exhilarating rush of wind in his ears, weightless.

A surge of rugged terrain, head-spinning loops, tall grass, and palm trees that signaled the ocean was drawing near.

With no Sonic in sight, Shadow gunned it towards the finish line. Faster than he’d ever pushed his bike, he didn’t dare to look at his speedometer as he blew past the sign for South Beach.

A rush of blue flashed by him, once, twice. Shadow floored his bike, careening towards the sand, and -

He locked his bike. Leapt off, dove for the sandy banks. And Sonic appeared next to him.

They collapsed in a tangle of limbs, and Sonic was cracking up.

“What’s so funny, Blue?”

“I lapped you!..” Sonic was laughing so hard, he could hardly get a breath in. “Five times!

“You did not!” Shadow retorted.

“I did!” Sonic wheezed. “I totally did!”

“Damn you.” Shadow huffed. His cheeks hurt, and he realized he’d been smiling. “Sore loser.”

Sonic’s laughter eventually died off. Shadow hadn’t moved from where they’d landed, and neither did Sonic.

With the adrenaline wearing off, Sonic rolled to his feet. Offered Shadow a hand, who scoffed. Stood up on his own. He dusted himself off, fluffed and shook his quills back into place.

“Hey,” Sonic said. “You didn’t come all this way to race, did you?”

Shadow grabbed Sonic by his stupid party necklace. Hauled him in, and Sonic met him halfway.

The kiss was brisk, fast as they were. A blink of electricity that left both of their quills pricking. Itching for more, but hesitant where to begin.

“Whoa.” Sonic gazed at him. Cracked a smile.

“Hmph.” Shadow looked away.

“You’re blushing, dude.” Sonic poked.

“A perfectly normal biological reaction.” Shadow replied, crossing his arms.

“Yeah,” Sonic smiled. He itched his nose, pupils blown wide. “Hey.”

Shadow dared glance over.

“Look.” Sonic shifted his weight. “I’m, ah.. I’m not great at this sort of thing, but I’ll - I want to try.”

Shadow blinked at him. Calculating. Not naive in the slightest, but needed Sonic to talk. “Try what?”

“I’m not really good at taking things slow, but I wanna.. do my best. For you.” Sonic said.

Shadow was rooted in place. His ear flicked.

Not that you’re slow!” Sonic threw his arms out. “Jeez, that came out wrong.”

Shadow rolled his eyes. But he smiled, quite enjoying his. It’s rare to see Sonic so out of his element.

“I mean, like. You know.” Sonic tried for a smile. “If you’re interested, of course-“

Shadow raised a brow. “Are you trying to ask me out, hedgehog?”

“N-no!” Sonic raised his hands up. “I don’t know?”

Shadow smirked. “You’re still afraid.”

Sonic frowned. “Of you? No way.”

“No.” Shadow glided closer. He pressed Sonic’s chest with an index finger. “You’re afraid of your heart.”

Sonic put his hands on his hip.

“So I’ll say what you’ve been too afraid to say for years.” Shadow grit his teeth. “And we can put this pathetic dance behind us.”

Sonic blinked slow, couldn’t take his eyes off of him.

“You don’t need to slow down for me. In fact, I’m the only one who’s ever been able to keep up with you.”

“Well, ah-“ Sonic rubbed his cheek, “Yeah.”

“I’m not gonna tie you down, Sonic.” Shadow said. “We live unconventional lives. It’s unrealistic to expect a conventional relationship.”

Sonic watched, curious when Shadow slowly began to circle around. “Cool.” He said. “You.. Wanna take things slow and see where it goes?”

“Hmph. Slow has never really been your style.” Shadow replied. “Has it?

“Yeah, I know..” Sonic exhaled through his nose. “I guess I just didn’t wanna scare you off..”

“Who do you think you’re talking to?” Shadow said. “Look in the mirror, blue. You’re the one who always runs.”

Sonic smiled, woozy. “I won’t run this time.”

Kissing Sonic was electric. Shadow couldn’t recall who moved first. Maybe they met in the middle as usual.

It was dire. Desperate. An intoxicating rush, and a breath of fresh air. Nothing had ever felt so right.

The kiss was better, this time. Nowhere to run, nowhere to be but here and now. Lost themselves in one another, growing more sure of it with every kiss.

It started simple enough. But Sonic pushed, Shadow shoved. And when Sonic drawled a moan right against his lips, Shadow’s self control all but vanished.

He’d been keeping it together all night. Suppressing and fighting, and Sonic had torn all his defenses down.

Shadow’s back hit a nearby palm. Sonic glanced down with a knowing smile, and Shadow huffed. The roughhousing and pheromones weren’t doing Shadow any favors, clearly.

“Ohh, man.” Sonic breathed.

Shadow exhaled, ragged. So wound up, desire rushing thick and heavy beneath his navel. Got his legs shaky with it. He could hardly think straight.

Thought he was hallucinating when Sonic held up his gloved hand. He smiled. “C’mon. Help me out here.”

Shadow’s heart leapt into his throat. He grit his teeth. But he went easy. Bit the base of Sonic’s glove, and Sonic slipped his hand out.

Sonic gave him a knowing smile while his cheeks lit up. Raised by humans, Shadow still didn’t fully understand this ritual.

But it was a Mobian sign of trust. Could be compared to humans taking off their clothing, Shadow supposed. It got his Mobian blood pumping, that’s for sure.

“Keep going?” Sonic checked in.

Shadow spat Sonic’s glove on the ground. “Don’t stop unless I tell you.”

Sonic smirked and Shadow was captivated, fully, by Sonic pulling off the other and shaking off his damn party favors. He dropped to his knees.

Chaos, this was really happening

Eager as always, Sonic brushed down Shadow’s waist, his hips. Plush pink pawpads kneaded Shadow’s thighs, but the gentle hint of claws reminded him to behave.

Shadow glanced left and right. While it’s decent to keep relations behind closed doors, Mobians are still wild at heart.

Sonic has surely had his fair share of experience in the outdoors. Shadow, on the other hand - He was pretty much raised by humans.

“No one’s gonna find us out here,” Sonic reassured. He gently bit Shadow’s thigh. “There’s a reason I took us to South Beach. It’s just you and me, Shads..”

“Sonic.” Shadow grit his teeth. His cheeks were so warm. “Fuck.”

Sonic exhaled, jittery. Shadow’s cock had unsheathed a couple more inches. Kept twitching, dripping a lot of pre. Unsheathed a bit more, when Sonic nipped his other thigh and glanced up at him.

“Still cool if I keep going?..” Sonic glanced up at Shadow for a cue, but - Next thing Sonic knew, Shadow’s fingers were in his quills.

“What did I tell you?” Shadow replied. His voice came off shakier than he would have preferred. A little desperate.

With his knees digging into the grass, Sonic grinned up at him. Shadow was a total mess. Red hot already, and-

Ohh-“ Shadow arched into Sonic’s touch. Curled his toes beneath his shoes. “D-Damn..

‘Cause Sonic pressed an open-mouthed kiss right to his tip. Got that thick, heavy pleasure growing taut beneath his navel. Took a steady breath, groaning on the exhale.

“That’s it,” Sonic gazed up at him. “Relax for me. Remember, it’s a time for celebration, man. No harm in having a little fun, right?”

Sonic gave another brisk kiss to the side of Shadow’s cock, and glided his fingers down. Massaged the base of his sheathe, and Shadow inhaled sharp.

Sonic’s ears twitched. Cause Shadow’s cock kept filling out, hot against his tongue. He fluttered his eyes shut to savor the sensation of Shadow growing as he eagerly stroked the the base.

Shadow’s toes curled beneath his shoes. Finally gave in to his instincts, the pheromones. Drawled a soft moan ‘cause Sonic’s hands felt so good. Just hands, but they were Sonic’s hands. His pads were soft, warm from being beneath his gloves.

Shadow bit his lip. Hardening by the second, filling out, and Sonic was going to find out, and -

“S-Sonic-“ Shadow huffed through gritted teeth.

“Ah?” Sonic’s eyes opened. Looked back down, and -

“Whoa!” Sonic blinked. “Ah- Wow. I knew you were half Black Arms and all, but man.”

Shadow was burning up. Really wanted to shut Sonic up, but needed to make sure he wasn’t going to freak out, cause -

“You look like a hedgehog, so I always kinda assumed you were - all hedgehog.” Sonic was gazing with curious eyes. A bit of wonder.

Shadow’s cock was pulsing in Sonic’s hand. A pleasant black to red fade, with a stripe up the bottom. Mobian enough, save for the row of dull spines along the base. Ridges on the side. His tip was pointier than usual, not too sharp, just. Alien. And at the base, Shadow had a knot that was still forming. Pulsed, and pre dripped onto Sonic’s chest.

Oh, man.” Sonic breathed.

Shadow was woozy with arousal, with anticipation. He exhaled through gritted teeth. Smirked down at Sonic. “Like what you see, Hedgehog?”

“Well, yeah!” Sonic huffed. “Man, where do you keep this thing?”

“Hmph.” Shadow’s whole body relaxed at Sonic’s reception. Let out a soft breath, guided the tip of his cock towards Sonic’s mouth. “I’m gonna keep it down your throat for as long as you can handle.” Shadow replied. His tone was a little breathy.

“Hah! Now we’re talkin!” Sonic grinned. Pressed an open-mouth kiss to his tip, and winked up at him. “On your mark!”

Shadow exhaled, ragged. Sonic’s jaw was loose, let him glide right inside.

“Fuck-“ Shadow hissed. Sonic’s mouth was too hot. Took him deep, was better at this than Shadow had ever imagined - not like he’d imagined it - that’s besides the point.

Sonic’s tongue glided slow up every ridge, moaning out, and those vibrations -

“Nngh-“ Shadow broke into a sweat. He bit the tip of his glove. Pulled it off, and spat it on the grass next to Sonic’s.

Sonic glanced up, but Shadow was quick to guide him back down. Glided his palms up to the crown of Sonic’s head. Stroked him behind the ears.

Sonic moaned out, and Shadow gasped. The vibrations felt so good, went straight to Shadow’s core. Got his blood pounding in his ears, surging with white hot desire. Licked his lips, started to salivate. Chaos, what was Sonic doing to him?

Sonic was moving faster. Took Shadow’s cock without much finesse, but made up for it in enthusiasm. Sloppy, moaning out and eager, and-

“Ngh!” Shadow closed his eyes in favor of them rolling up. “Fuck-“

He grit his teeth. So thankful he’d planned ahead, cause Shadow was already losing himself. His vision was blurring, claws flexing.

What he experienced was different than your typical estrus. And Shadow could feel the primal tick like a physical entity, growing stronger and harder to contain, and -

Sonic’s ears perked. He didn’t expect Shadow to be so sensitive. Or vocal, for that matter. He leaned in to continue, but Shadow slapped a palm on his forehead.

“S-Stop,” Shadow huffed. “Hang on.”

Sonic pulled back. “You okay, man?”

Shadow nodded. But he reached back, started messing with his quills.

And with the clink of metal, Sonic’s ears perked. Shadow had dug out an inhibitor ring. Unlatched it, and Sonic tilted his head when Shadow clasped it at the very base of his cock. Locked it in place, just below the knot.

“Okay,” Shadow’s cheeks were slightly flush. “We can continue.”

“You put an inhibitor ring on your dick.” Sonic stated.

Shadow gestured down. “The rest of it doesn’t bother you?”

“Well none of it bothers me.” Sonic tilted his head. “I’m just curious why, that’s all.”

“It’s a precaution.” Shadow replied.

“Precaution?” Sonic’s ear twitched. “For what?”

“I’m, ah..” Shadow gritted his molars. “My DNA is not entirely hedgehog. So-“

“Yeah, obviously.” Sonic chuckled, gliding his thumb along extraterrestrial ridges on Shadow’s cock. “And?”

“The Black Arms have very different mating habits, some of which I believe I inherited,” Shadow explained. “The inhibitor ring helps me keep them under control.”

Sonic frowned. “Why do you wanna do that?”

“Well..” Shadow drew a slow breath, “Along with being carnally bloodthirsty, the Black Arms were oviparous.”

“Okay?” Sonic cocked his head. Ran his fingers down along Shadow’s knot, then grazed the inhibitor ring’s metal.

Surely he didn’t understand the gravity of what Shadow just said, so-

“The ring makes me incapable of laying eggs inside my partner.” Shadow translated.

“Oh!” Sonic’s ears shot up. “Whoa. What?

Shadow groaned. His face was unbearably red.

“That’s - Kinda cool,” Sonic blinked. “Weird, sure, but. Hot, too. You know?”

Shadow grimaced, but his ears weren’t so flat anymore. “You think it’s - hot?”

“Well, yeah!” Sonic rubbed his nose. “Look, man. You know I can match anything you throw at me. This isn’t any different!”

“Hmmph,” Shadow crossed his arms. “Well, don’t take the inhibitor off. I tend to get prickly without it.”

You get prickly?” Sonic teased. “Yeesh, you’re not already?“

“Let’s get on with it, hedgehog.” Shadow swallowed, but held his chin high. “If you’re still up for it.”

“Course!” Sonic grinned.

“Okay,” Shadow took a shaky breath.

“Buuuut..” Sonic rubbed his cheek along Shadow’s cock. His tail was wagging. “I think it’s time you start pulling your weight now.”

“You want me to return the favor?” Shadow said.

“Eh,” Sonic shrugged, “Actually..”

Shadow raised a brow when Sonic spun around. Still on his knees, but now he was leaning forward, and -

Shadow swallowed. He’s not sure if he dropped to his knees willingly, or if they gave out naturally at the sight of Sonic lifting his tail for him.

“I was thinkin’ we stop wasting time and skip to the main even-“ Sonic’s ears perked. “Whoa!”

Shadow grabbed Sonic’s tail. Yanked up.

Shadow was hazy. Pheromones shouldn’t affect him like this. He’s the Ultimate Life Form. Immortal. Invincible. Unmatched.

And predictably, the only thing challenging that is Sonic.

He hauled him in, licked over Sonic’s hole, all the way up to the underside of his wagging tail.

“Gah!” Sonic exclaimed. “H-oh!”

Shadow pulled away.

“Whoo!” Sonic’s tail was out of control. Shadow grabbed it again to keep it still. “Don’t stop, that’s good. So good.”

Shadow spread Sonic slow, entranced by how soaked he was. Shadow lunged. Lapped along Sonic’s hole, and tried not to lose it. Sonic was salty and sweet, and so outrageously in heat. The way Shadow had felt in the Tiki Tavern earlier had nothing on this.

If there were any remnants of Silver’s weak suppressants left in his system, they were snuffed out. Shadow’s cock was throbbing, pulsing with his racing heart. He was sweating, taste buds salivating so harsh it stung.

“Whoohh, yeah..” Sonic encouraged. Hitched when Shadow slipped his tongue inside. “Chaos, Shadow- Jeez..”

Shadow had no idea what he was doing. Never imagined he’d been in this situation with Sonic, never cared to practice beyond research, but. Sonic was quivering. Grinding gently into the pressure, and Shadow couldn’t pull away. Must be doing something right by those noises Sonic was making, Fuck - those noises.

Sonic sounded so different somehow. He’d battled Sonic so many times in the past. It’s not unusual to hear him groan, but it’s so different now. Thick and charged, losing himself in pleasure. And Shadow was doing that to him.

“Thanks for prepping me, man.” Sonic glanced over his shoulder. “It’s cool.”

“I’m not doing this for you.” Shadow huffed. Driven mad with pheromones, couldn’t get enough. Liked nice and deep and Sonic hitched -

He chuckled. “You’re an asshole, man.”

“You are what you eat, Sonic.” Shadow grinned.

“H-oh my god!” Sonic cracked up. “Dude! That was kinda sick.”

Shadow dragged Sonic closer. Couldn’t get enough. Sonic was a mess, shiny and dripping, and-

If Shadow didn’t stop, he was going to cum like this. He inhaled deep. Let out a guttural moan. Pulled off, and threw Sonic onto his back. Sonic was sharp, and he wasn’t about to wrestle with his quills right now.

He and Sonic had sparred a lot. So wasn’t an unfamiliar sight to see Sonic like this, either, but everything about this time was different.

Sonic welcomed Shadow, who straddled him against the grass. The hero guided him along. Glanced, breathless, when Shadow’s cock pulsed against him.

Sonic arched, panting beneath him. The pair watched, woozy while Shadow dripped pre all over Sonic’s belly. He had no idea how he was going to fit.

But Sonic gazed up at Shadow, undeterred. “Ready any time.”

Shadow’s heart pounded in his throat. Spurred on by instinct, let it wash over him while Sonic raised his legs up. Gave Shadow the most enticing view before resting his legs around Shadow’s back.

“I’m going to make you mine, Blue.” Shadow said, quiet but determined. Sure of it.

“Mmh-“ Sonic’s paws curled when Shadow pressed his tip, eager against Sonic’s soaked hole.

“Yeah..” Sonic’s eyes rolled up when Shadow pressed on, then eagerly glided inside.

The pair moaned out in tandem.

“Nngh,” Shadow hitched. Let out a steady breath, claws flexing along Sonic’s waist.

“Chaos..” Sonic let out a sound that Shadow wished he could bottle. Dug his claws into Shadow’s back, and the ebony agent grit his teeth. Inhaled sharp, pushed deeper.

“Damn,” Shadow broke into a sweat. Sonic was so wet, really warm.

Sonic huffed. Glanced down, biting his lip when Shadow pulled out, glided back inside. “Mmh..”

“Fuck..” Shadow exhaled. His pupils were narrowing, fighting all instincts that begged him to be ruthless with Sonic.

Cause Shadow wanted this to last, and no amount of Chaos Control could help him stall time. He needed to pace himself.

“Feels good, huh?” Sonic grinned, cheeky.

Shadow sneered. His heart was about to burst though his chest. Too flush to be stoic, so he nodded. Licked his lips, swallowing thick so he didn’t start drooling about it.

He pulled back, glided back inside, and this time Shadow was able to hilt him - save for his knot.

Sonic drawled a moan. Arched up against Shadow. “Damn, that’s a lot..”

Shadow exhaled, ragged. Needed to calm down, cause his heart was ready to burst through his chest again. Driven wild by Sonic’s heat, his enthusiasm.

Sonic ran his hands up Shadow’s back. Rubbed just beneath the quills on his back, and Shadow groaned. It was all so much, Shadow was rooted in place. Took a moment to center himself, resting against Sonic’s body. Their racing hearts pounded in time.

“Thanks, man..” Sonic’s breath was hot on his lips. “Just one more sec to adjust, okay?”

Usually Sonic’s all about speed, so it was hard for Shadow’s chest not to swell with pride at his words. Shadow inhaled, deep. Moaned out, cause Shadow could smell him everywhere. Deep inside him, and it still wasn’t enough. His cock twitched, needed more.

“Fuck..” Sonic breathed. “Feels amazing, Shadow..”

Shadow flattened his ears against the praise. Got his cock aching, and Shadow was trying to last. Damn hedgehog.

“Okay, I’m good.” Sonic’s nails dug into his back, and Shadow huffed.

His cheeks were burning. Could hardly contain himself.

Sonic smiled, curling his toes when Shadow grabbed his waist. His thumbs met in the middle, pushed gently on the underside of Sonic’s chest. Quickly succumbed to his instincts, couldn’t help the way he started fucking into him. Hardly pulled out at all, needed to be as deep as possible.

“Hah..” Sonic licked his lower lip. Bit down. “Mmh… That’s good, Shads..”

Shadow inhaled sharp, exhaled slow. Sonic smelled so good, felt even better.

He grit his teeth. Dared to gaze down, marveled at how good Sonic was taking him. Hypnotized by way Sonic’s belly swelled, just a bit, when Shadow pushed as deep as he could.

“Nngh..” Shadow’s knot pulsed, cock aching at the sight. Especially when his next thrust was louder, slippery, like Sonic was getting wetter by the second.

“Faster..” Sonic’s pupils were rolling up. Stroked himself along, and Shadow grit his fangs.

He hauled Sonic in, and Sonic gasped. His quills splayed all over the grass, pretzeled up, and Shadow laid his weight into it.

“Ohh, yeah!” Sonic encouraged.

Eagerly worked up a hypnotic rhythm, fast enough to satisfy Sonic and slow enough to savor. Sonic held on tight, held him close. Their hearts pounded together, sharing the same air.

Shadow forced Sonic’s legs apart with his full weight, fucked him nice and deep. Felt so good, he could hardly keep his eyes open. But he was addicted to watching Sonic fall apart beneath him. So deep, but was taking him with ease now.

“Fuck, Sonic..” Shadow panted. Rocked forward, planted his palms on the grassy bank. Fucked him as deep as he could. Wet and sloppy, so creamy he could hardly stand it.

Shadow melted into Sonic. Held him close, was running on pure adrenaline. Started panting against Sonic’s ear, driven mad by all the sounds Sonic was making.

He was hitching and moaning out, arching against his body. Shadow snapped at Sonic’s ear, got it between his teeth. Needed something to latch onto, but this wasn’t enough.

Sonic moaned when Shadow pulled off, snarling. Licked his lips. Tasted iron. He was salivating. Wanted to eat him alive. Needed to be as close as possible. Fucking him, and it still wasn’t enough. Shadow grinded, deep, knot rubbing and pulsing with each thrust.

Sonic gasped. His claws scored down Shadow’s back, and Shadow snarled with the blinding sting. Got him grimacing, salivating.

Sonic was gone. Held Shadow close, moaning out encouraging nonsense. Panting. Sweating, pinned beneath Shadow’s body, and Chaos he looked good like this. His quills were sprawled along the grass. Disheveled and messy, and fuck, Shadow was gonna make one Hell of a mess of him at this rate.

Shadow dug his claws into Sonic’s waist. Gripped tight, and lunged for his shoulder. Dug his teeth in so deep, that Sonic cried out.

A few rings dropped from Sonic’s quills. Burned so bright, but Sonic moaned through the pain. Massaged down, kept grinding while ecstasy started to flare and twist deep in his navel.

Shadow groaned, guttural and fierce. Pulled off, panting. Pupils blown wide, and Sonic couldn’t take his eyes off him. He was so flush, desperate and salivating.

“Fuuck..” Shadow‘s knot pounded against Sonic’s soaked hole. Flared with every beat, wanted to desperately to be-

Deeper.” Sonic was panting. “I can - I can take it.”

Shadow grit his teeth, had already been trying. But he’s not one to shy away from Sonic’s challenges, so - Shadow held him in place. Kept thrusting, noisy and soaking wet, and Sonic was a mess.

His toes curled, claws flexing when Shadow clenched his waist, tight. Shadow licked Sonic’s neck. Bit down again, drove in hard, and -

“Nngh..” Sonic’s lashes fluttered, pleasure and pain bubbling and burning, and Sonic’s legs clenched around Shadow’s back. He hitched when Shadow pushed deeper, started spreading him so good, and -

“Fuck!” Shadow huffed.

“Gah!” Sonic gasped. His eyes were unfocused. Woozy and gone, and “Fuck, Shads!“

He’d knotted Sonic with a drawling moan, pressure so heavy he could hardly stand it -

Brimming pleasure was rushing so eminent. Shadow’s pupils narrowed. Got his claws flexing, primal with the way Sonic’s body was clenching around him. So close, but not enough. Addicted to that rush, so -

He pulled out, gritting while Sonic gasped. Shouted when Shadow drove back inside, knotted him again.

“Ah!” Sonic held on tight, scoring Shadow’s back - Legs clenching around him. Snarling, and Sonic was so wet when Shadow pulled out again, started dripping with it. “Keep going, I’m ‘unna - Hah..”

Sonic was gone. Eyes rolled up, panting and desperate. Pushed so close, entranced by pain and pleasure, and Shadow couldn’t stand it anymore.

“Fuck..” Shadow panted. He’d been edging along for as long as he could, needed release so badly, he was shaking with it. Once more-

Sonic moaned out, staggering. Clenching so tight, so hot, and Sonic lost all control when Shadow stuffed his knot inside again. Thrusted deep, then yanked and pulled out with a slick pop.

“I’m gonna cum, Shads-“ Sonic huffed. “Mmh! Fuck, I’m gonna cum-“

Shadow’s ears perked. He drove in, flaring with desire, and Sonic gasped. Clenched around him. So tight, Shadow couldn’t pull out this time.

Sonic!-“

Sonic held him close. Arched beneath him, eyes rolling up, and -

Unable to pull out, Shadow thrusted deeper. Grinded deep inside, gritting his teeth ‘cause Sonic had gotten so tight - he couldn’t take it anymore.

Sonic moaned out, delirious and delighted, and - “Fuck, yeah!

Sonic gasped while Shadow drove in hard. Pumped deep, deeper while Sonic arched with that staggering pleasure, clenching down so hard while Shadow locked in.

Thick desire rushed over Shadow’s body. Hot and eminent, rooted him in place. Got him gasping, moaning out, still thrusting - desperate to give Sonic every drop.

Teeth bared, Shadow’s eyes had rolled up. He was growling, flush. Fierce and finished, so wound up and broken down.

Shadow dug his fangs into Sonic’s neck, grabbed his waist. Flexed inside him, flexed again, and -

“Ah!” Sonic’s ears flattened. Eyes rolling, delirious. “F-Fuck, Shadow!-“

Sonic was still coming. So creamy, Shadow could hardly stand it.

He buried his teeth in deep, and Sonic gasped. Moaned out, clenched so good, it hurt. Soaked the inhibitor ring at the base of Shadow’s cock, dripped onto the grass below.

And Shadow was salivating. It was such a tremendous relief, Shadow was weightless. Ferocious in the way he handled Sonic, pinned him down. Balls deep and trying to get deeper.

So hot, he couldn’t see straight. Couldn’t pull out either, so he rode it out. Moaning out, delirious and-

“S-Shads!” Sonic panted, “Mmh-“ Sonic’s lashes fluttered. His legs were shaking, teeth digging into his lower lip. Taking Shadow’s load like a champ, hardly spilled a drop.

Shadow’s gaze rolled up. The sensation was so severe, it rooted him in place. Held Sonic in place, thrusted firm and deep, and-

“Haahh, yeah..” Sonic sighed. Hitched, twitching with aftershocks.

Shadow exhaled, heartily. Could hardly see straight, fought to keep his eyes open.

“Ouwh..” Sonic huffed. Glanced down. “Fuck, Shadow! You’re an animal, man!”

Shadow groaned. Consumed by dwindling pleasure, kept clenching into that burning heat even as he winded down. But with his adrenaline zapped, Shadow melted against Sonic’s chest. Exhaled smooth, exhausted while Sonic relaxed beneath him.

“Whew! That..” Sonic panted. “Was amazing..”

Shadow groaned. Tried not to sound too labored, but even Sonic was having a hard time catching his breath, so.

“We gotta do that more often.” Sonic wiped his forehead.

Shadow’s cheeks were flushed. “Whatever..”

“It’s cool, man, you can drop the aloof act.” Sonic smirked, “Your dick is literally inside me.”

Sonic had a point. Shadow tried to pull out, but he - couldn’t. Oh, Chaos.

“Spring heat or not, I’ve wanted to do that for a long time,” Sonic shrugged. “I’m big enough to admit that!”

“Hmph.”

“And I know you have too.” Sonic smiled. “Took our egos long enough, huh?”

“Mmh.” Shadow huffed. Tried, subtly, to pull out again, but -

“Sheesh, one load and you’re back to your usual grumpy self.” Sonic smiled.

“Shut up, hedgehog.” Shadow’s cheeks were hot. He was stuck.

“Make me!” Sonic grinned. “Faker.”

Kissing Sonic was something Shadow could get used to. Tried to commit every curve, every sound to memory. Who knows when he’ll be able to catch him again.

Sonic exhaled hot against his lips. Kissed him again, and yeah. It’s game over.

Sonic pulled away, pressing on Shadow’s chest. “Whew!” He exclaimed. “Alright, I gotta run. I told Tails I’d be home in time for movie night.” He looked left and right before reaching for his gloves. They were just out of reach.

Shadow let out a ragged breath. Didn’t budge.

Sonic wiggled beneath him. “C’mon, man, get off’a me already. I need to stretch my legs.”

Shadow flushed a shade deeper. His eyes narrowed again, hitching when Sonic pulled.

The hero frowned, brows pursing. Pulled again, and-

“S-Stop,” Shadow huffed. “We’re tied together.”

“Tied tog- Ohh man…” Sonic looked down, ear flicking. “We’re stuck like this?”

Shadow frowned down at where their bodies met. “Yeah.” He summed up.

“Huh.” Sonic gave a gentle tug. Huffed.

“Sonic.”

When it wouldn’t budge, he spun around. Dug his toes into the dirt, and-

“Sonic, don’t!” Shadow grabbed onto his quills. Made sure he didn’t rev away, cause that’d do nothing but injure them both. “Relax. The tie will subside naturally.”

Sonic exhaled, dramatic. “Alright.. What do we do in the meantime?”

“You asked for this, Blue.” Shadow frowned. “Clarity is a bitch, huh?”

Sonic flopped onto his belly, and Shadow steadily knelt on top of him. Tried his best to get comfortable against Sonic’s quills.

“Sooo..” Sonic tapped his toes against the grass. “How long are we stuck like this?”

Shadow’s face was red. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know? Am I-” Sonic’s brows raised. The temporary silence made Shadow’s ears burn. “Is.. this your first time?”

“..Yes, Sonic.” Shadow gritted his fangs. “So don’t make me regret it.”

“Whoa..” Sonic said. “Cool.”

“Yeah.” Shadow summed up. He frowned down at Sonic. Coming down from his high, he could see all of the damage he’d done.

He licked Sonic’s ear, which twitched at the sudden attention. Shadow gently bit down to keep it still.

“Hey!” Sonic chuckled. “What’re you doin-“

“It’s bleeding a bit.” Shadow replied. “From earlier.”

“Heh,” Sonic itched his nose. “We got kinda intense, huh?”

“Yeah,” Shadow mumbled. “Sorry.. About that.”

Sonic snickered. “I’m all for it, dude! Nothing I can’t handle, that’s for sure. I’d stop you if I didn’t like it.”

Shadow grunted. Let Sonic’s ear go, then licked at the base where blood was clotting.

Sonic chuckled. Flicked his ear again, and Shadow pulled off. Glared. “What?”

“Nothing,” Sonic smiled. “Just tickles, that’s all.

Shadow growled. But went back to cleaning Sonic’s ear, got all the blood clots out.

He tried to rest against Sonic’s back again, but he couldn’t really get comfortable.

“Can we-“ Shadow sighed. “Your quills are sharp.”

“Heh!” Sonic looked over his shoulder. “What, you wanna snuggle?” He teased.

“I did not say that.” Shadow frowned.

“We don’t have a lotta options here!” Sonic gestured down.

“Hmph.”

“Here, ah..” Sonic rolled onto his side. “Heh.. You can lay next to me if you want.”

Shadow sighed. Not much choice. His heart pounded irritatingly strong in his chest. He surveyed the patch of grass both in front and behind Sonic. Quill to quill would be the least mortifying. But probably just as sharp as before. Dammit.

They’re tied together for Chaos sake, so Shadow surrendered. Laid nose to nose with Sonic, who smiled - welcoming while he got situated in the grass. Sonic scooted closer, and Shadow didn’t move away.

Shadow frowned. Grazed his fingers over the array of bruising teeth marks along Sonic’s shoulder, his neck. He’d gotten pretty rough with him, but that wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. For them, at least. Sonic wore him well.

“Hey, uh..” Sonic’s ear flicked. He didn’t meet Shadow’s eye. “I meant what I said, by the way.”

“Mmh?”

“Even without - Y’know, Spring Heat. I still wanted this.”

“Hmph.” Shadow closed his eyes. “I know.”

“Whadaya mean, you know?”

“You’ve been flirting with me for seasons.” Shadow smiled.

“Ah, man.. Was it that obvious?”

Shadow opened an eye. “Yes.”

“Well - Why didn’t you meet me in the middle?” Sonic asked.

“I suppose.. I was afraid of my heart, too..” Shadow frowned.

Sonic blinked. “That’s fair.”

Shadow exhaled, slow.

“Let’s not do that anymore though, okay?” Sonic said.

“Do what?” Shadow pressed. Enjoyed watching Sonic squirm.

Eugh.” Sonic grimaced. “Run away from our - Hearts, or whatever. I was kinda hoping that we could run - together. More often.”

Shadow smiled. “That’s disgusting.”

I know.” Sonic winced, grinning. “You in?”

“Yes.”

Sonic moved in. Pressed their foreheads together, and Shadow was too exhausted to put up a fuss. Despite his heart pounding in his chest, he didn’t have any fight to give. Just remnants of exhilaration and the dawning reality that he’s mated with his earliest rival.

It was peaceful, in a way. Another hatchet buried, another resolution to his rocky past.

Then Sonic pulled away -

Dude. Are you purring?

Shadow’s eyes shot open. Damn it. He’d let his guard down. Too caught up in memories, zapped and exhausted, and. With Sonic pressed so close, it’s not his fault, “It’s-“

“A completely normal biological reaction?” Sonic teased.

“..Indeed.” Shadow glared.

Sonic smiled at him. As the rumbling persisted, Sonic chuckled.

“I like it.” Sonic smiled.

Shadow’s ears flattened. Sonic butted his head against his cheek, got real comfortable. Exhaled, relaxing into Shadow’s warmth. And in no time, Sonic had joined in. It was nice to see him with his guard down.

Drowsiness washed over Shadow as they laid together. Entranced by Sonic’s rumbling, by the heat of his body. A pleasant warmth, not overwhelming like before. And this time, Shadow welcomed it. With the birds chirping overhead and the ocean crashing behind them, it was. Peaceful.

The sun had set. And with Sonic curled against his chest, Shadow couldn’t help but gaze up at the stars.

He hoped Maria could see him now. Er- No, maybe not right now. But he couldn’t help but feel this is what she’d wanted for him.

He tried his best to live for them both. It wasn’t always smooth, and it wasn’t always easy to carry on. But in this moment, Shadow’s heart thrummed with a passion he’d all but forgotten. Didn’t think he was capable of it anymore. Ever since he lost her, all he’s known is his darkness. Vast and empty, like space itself.

But there to stand up to him and prove him wrong - time and time again. Sonic.

Space didn’t look so empty tonight. Stars twinkled bright out here in Green Hill, away from the smog that hung over Westopolis.

“This is kinda nice.” Sonic murmured.

“Mmh?” Shadow kept his eyes on the stars.

“I, ah..” Sonic scratched his cheek. “Y’know. I usually hit the road after a hookup. But this is a nice change of pace.”

“Mm.” Shadow agreed.

Sonic curled against him, and Shadow leaned in. Grew drowsy amidst the crashing ocean, and Sonic’s body heat. Could have slipped in and out of sleep, cause time passed in a flash. And as much as he enjoyed the silence, he couldn’t overstay his welcome.

“Sonic.” Shadow said.

“Mmmh..” Sonic opened an eye. Woozy with sleep.

“I think I can pull out now.” Shadow said.

“Heh..” Sonic gazed down, curling his toes. “Alright. Go for it.”

Shadow tugged, and Sonic winced. “Gah..”

Shadow pulled out with a slick pop, and the pair gasped. Cream spurted between them, flowed hot down Sonic’s legs. Dripped, thick, onto the grass below.

Chaos..” Sonic sighed. The sight got his tail wagging again. “That’s with your inhibitor ring on?”

“..Yeah.” Shadow summed up.

“I’d like to see what happens when you take it off.” Sonic smiled.

“..Maybe next time.” Shadow smiled.

Sonic perked. “Next time we.. meet?”

“I wouldn’t mind being alone.. together. Again.” Shadow said.

“Cool.” Sonic smiled. “When?”

Shadow smirked. “Already eager for more, huh?”

Sonic opened his mouth to speak, but his wrist walkie started going off.

“Oops-“ Sonic zipped over and grabbed his discarded walkie, which was lying next to his gloves. He checked the screen, then looked back at Shadow. “Let me take this.”

Shadow nodded.

“What’s up, buddy?” Sonic answered.

“Sooonic..” Tails drawled. “Are you still at that lame party? You said you’d be back home in time to watch a movie.”

“Heh..” Sonic scratched his ear. “Nah, I’m not at the party. I actually ran into Shadow on the way back and, well-“ Sonic glanced over at Shadow. “We got a little tied up, but we’re all good now.”

“Shadow?” Tails sounded weary. “If he’s causing any trouble again..”

“Nah, you don’t need to worry about him.” Sonic smiled. “He’s nothing I can’t handle.”

Shadow crossed his arms.

“Why don’t you throw some popcorn in the microwave?” Sonic said. “I’ll be home before it’s done!”

Tails giggled. “Alright, Sonic. See you soon.”

“See’ya in a flash!” Sonic smiled. He hung up the walkie and gazed at Shadow. “You, ah.. Wanna come back to my place? Tails and I are gonna watch The Fast and the Furious 2.”

“Nah. You should spend some time with Tails.” Shadow had stood up and skated over to where they discarded their gloves. He grabbed his own, and chucked Sonic’s pair at his face. “I need to head back to the city. Make sure Omega didn’t set my apartment on fire.”

“Alright, cool.” Sonic pulled his gloves back on. “I’ll see you around, then?”

“I was thinking.. tomorrow.” Shadow smiled.
