Work Text:

It was a friendly silence, the one which Jake and Johnnie fell into while editing.

Neither made noise except for tapping on computer keys, and replaying sound clips over and over.

They were usually sitting on the couch, Johnnie first, then Jake would join him, throwing himself next to the shorter man.

Sometimes Jake recorded videos first, sometimes Johnnie helped edit Jake’s videos.

But it was always a comfortable silence, the both of them engulfed in editing, and each other's company.
“I’m so sick of editing” Johnnie groaned, leaning his head back on the couch, his neck muscles strained from the hunched posture he’d adopted.
“Same” Jake said, not looking up from his computer, where he was scrutinizing a clip of his face.

“I hate looking at myself for this long,” Johnnie complained, cracking his neck, “It’s so awkward.”
Jake chuckled, bopping his head in agreement, still not looking over.

Groaning again that Jake hadn’t provided him a distraction from editing, Johnnie fixed his bleary eyes back on his computer. With a dead expression, Johnnie continued editing, his movements getting more and more sluggish, his eyes drifting shut for longer, and his bony hands slowing their movements on the keys. It wasn’t much longer after their short conversation that Johnnie fell to sleep, his body exhausted even though he never did anything but sleep. Johnnie’s hands slipped from the computer, resting on the couch, his head tilted back, throat fully exposed. Jake didn’t even realize for the first half an hour at least, until Johnnie slid from his upright position to slump against Jake’s shoulder.

Not that Jake took note of these things, but Jake and Johnnie didn’t really touch often, if at all. Of course, living together provided reason for a certain amount of physical touch, bumping into each other while moving around, and other such things, but they didn’t hug, or lean against each other, because Johnnie was weird about touching.

Heat seeped from Jake into Johnnie, who mumbled something in his sleep, the soft rumble vibrating through Jake. Jake couldn’t help but make the “aww” face, his features softening as he looked at Johnnie. He looked a hell of a lot more peaceful when he was asleep, his lips slightly parted, tongue flicking behind them. His face looked relaxed, for once in his life. Not sad, not scared, not bored or dead, but alive and calm. It was adorable. The shorter man snuggled further into Jake, nuzzling his face against Jake’s exposed shoulder, burnt hair tickling his skin. Making the ‘aww’ face again, Jake’s eyes crinkled as he smiled. Debating taking a picture so he could make fun of Johnnie later, he decided against it, choosing instead to enjoy the delicious warmth sinking from Johnnie to him.

Johnnie grumbled as Jake began clicking keys again, the movement in Jake’s arms making his head twitch. Johnnie's skinny arms crept around Jakes, holding his arm in place, fingers rubbing at Jake’s muscle. Rolling his eyes, Jake stopped tapping, deciding to watch Youtube instead, letting the shorter man sleep peacefully for a while longer. He was never sure if Johnnie was tired, because it was impossible to see eye bags under the amount of black eyeshadow Johnnie poured on, however with how deeply the shorter man was sleeping now, it was although he hadn’t slept in weeks.

Only a few videos in, Jake felt a line of drool slip down his bare arm, his face twisting in humorous disgust as he shook his head at the shorter man. Johnnie’s face was squished adorably into Jake’s arm, his mouth open and pressed in a half-kiss against Jake’s shoulder. He’d fully looped both of his skinny arms around Jake’s one, his hands holding tightly, even in sleep. Johnnie had cushioned his head on Jake, effectively hugging the taller while using him as a pillow.

Leaning his own head down to lie on Johnnie’s, Jake sighed, and drifted peacefully in and out of sleep while he watched Youtube, knowing he had work to be done, videos to be shot and edited, but too comfortable in his position to bother with any of that. Johnnie’s skin smelt like soap, his clothes smelt like cigarettes, even though he didn’t smoke them much anymore, and his hair smelt like drugs. It was so chemically burned Jake felt himself getting high from just inhaling the scent, his nose buried in the coarse strands.

Of course, as like most things when it came to Johnnie, as soon as the shorter man was lucid, he pulled himself blearily away from Jake.

An awkward shit-eating grin spread across his face, as he crinkled his nose at Jake.

“Did you fall asleep on me?”

“What, dude no, you fell asleep on me!” Jake said indignantly, wiping his drool-covered arm on Johnnie, “Dribbled all over me too.” Jake grumbled as Johnnie yelped in disgust, yanking his body away, holding onto his laptop so it didn’t fall on the ground.

“You’re gay as shit.” Johnnie mumbled, putting space between the two of them, and opening his computer to continue working.

Jake rolled his eyes and closed Youtube, beginning to edit again, “Says you.” He leaned over to Jake, to rest his head on the shorter man’s shoulder, fluttering his eyelashes and pursing his lips. “Fuck off,” Johnnie laughed, shoving Jakes shoulder away and focusing intently on his laptop, trying to ignore Jake.

For the rest of the time they edited though, Jake caught Johnnie stealing sly glances at Jake's exposed shoulder, with a look comparable to longing.
