Shuuji’s first memory was his mom locking him in the bathroom of their small house while glass smashed elsewhere. He doesn’t know if it was his Dad or someone else because Shuuji knows his dad was an alcoholic and a violent one.
Shuuji doesn’t remember most of his childhood. Though he remembers the day his mom died that's when Dazai took over. Dazai was stronger than Shuuji because he was five years older than him. Shuuji did not regain control of their body much after Dazai joined him at seven. Shuuji was okay with this because Dazai was protecting him.
For years it was just the two of them but when Shuuji was 12 Hana and the unknown joined the system. Hana was strong, stronger than Dazai she felt no fear. The unknown was a recluse but the strongest of them all they took over when their body was in physical pain. While neither could protect their body they both could protect Dazai and more importantly Shuuji.
Hana told Shuuji nothing about what she saw and wouldn’t let him see things when she was in control like Dazai did sometimes when things were safe enough. The danger of Hana was she didn’t fear death and if anything longed for it. Dazai and Hana worked together, with Dazai as the brains and Hana as the brawn. Hana and Dazai were there to make sure Shuuji never suffered and the unknown to make sure none of the others saw what Mori did to them physically. Despite his alters trying to protect him from suffering, Shuuji always felt alone. Dazai was the closest thing Shuuji had to a friend, he let Shuuji see when it was safe. Shuuji only had control if he was alone, where he was safe from external threats.
When Shuuji was 15 Dazai made his first friend, Chuuya. Dazai ofter thought about Chuuya and Shuuji wanted to meet him but Hana and Dazai agreed that it wasn’t safe so that was that.
At 16 Dazai starts dating Chuuya meaning Shuuji couldn’t switch when they were home. However, everyone has their limits, and one day at 17 Shuuji wakes up and Dazai isn’t responding. So when Chuuya arrives to drag Dazai out of bed Hana has to assume control, which she and Shuuji both agree is not a good idea. “Chuuya go away before I hurt you,” she tells him to which Chuuya seems shocked but as he turns to walk away Hana tells him to come in until she can get her head together. After a minute of Shuuji pleading with Hana to tell Chuuya the truth she agrees. “Chuuya, Dazai isn’t here right now. I’m Hana.” Chuuya seems confused and asks where Dazai is then “We don’t know! Dazai isn’t responding and you are the only person we trust” Chuuya looks even more confused. “Fine! This body belongs to Shuuji Tsushima so take care of him until Dazai comes back” That was the first time Shuuji talked to a person outside the system in 10 years. After a few hours, Dazai finally said something and Shuuji started jumping with joy. For the next year, Shuuji was allowed to be in control when they were alone with Chuuya. It took a bit for Chuuya to understand that there were 3 well 4 people in his boyfriend's head but once he got ahold of it he learned the difference between the 3 of them.
Then it all came crashing down when Odasaku died. A new person takes over she gets them out of the mafia and makes a plan for their record to be rewritten. A week after it all happens, Shuuji is finally able to see the world again. Hana had been talking about burning the world down for a week and Dazai hadn’t shown up at all. Shuuji talks to the new for the first time. Her name is Kaori, she doesn't she has no attachments to anyone but the system. Kaori doesn’t know much about Dazai’s history except what Shuuji needed to get away from the mafia. Kaori is like a big sister to the system she takes care of them and most importantly she makes Shuuji feel safe.
