Work Text:
“Do you really wish to return?” Mizu’s voice is steady but slow, deliberate to keep her voice from cracking. “If you leave, you can never come back.”
There’s a faint, sad smile on your lips as you watch her fixed expression. You’ve spent enough time with Mizu to know that she was trying to hide her true feelings. She was mournful, scared even. You knew that much. For after this moment, the two of you would never see each other again.
Your movements are careful as you slowly reach out to grab her long, calloused hands. Intertwining them together, you stare at your conjoined fingers.
“I know,” you whisper. “I know. But I can’t stay here, you and I both know that.”
You don’t see this, but a crack forms in Mizu’s façade. Her mouth turns down, brows lowering.
“You’ve said it yourself, you’re on the path of revenge. There’s no room for weakness.” You remove your gaze from your locked hands and stare into Mizu’s eyes. “Our love is a weakness.”
Mizu says nothing. You know that, deep down, she knows that your words are true. There’s too much risk for both of you to keep this up. Your life, her mission, it could all come crumbling if the two of you let this love persist.
This time, it’s Mizu who looks down at your clasped hands. You watch her for a moment, studying her expression. She still has that little frown on her face. You’d find it endearing if your heart didn’t hurt so bad.
With one last gentle squeeze, you remove your hands from hers. Mizu looks up abruptly, watching as you pull away. This time, you see it clear on her face: hurt.
Your smile falters. You’ve never seen her look so vulnerable before. Even in the quiet of the night, when the two of you sat alone, hushed conversation about anything and everything passing between you two, when she laughed and smiled at you so tenderly; nothing compares to the pain so obvious on her features now.
A moment of weakness. This was that weakness.
It’s a weakness you allow yourself to give into, if only for one more moment.
You step closer, hands reaching out to cup Mizu’s face. Without her glasses, you have the honor of seeing Mizu’s beautiful blue eyes.
Mizu searches your face for a moment, as if taking in your every little detail, before returning your stare.
A silent question.
The smile returns to your face as you tilt your head, leaning closer into Mizu’s space. Lovingly so, your lips brush briefly before you push forwards, mouth against hers.
Mizu follows your lead, pushing back into the kiss.
It's sweet, quiet and soft. A simple action that the two of you perform. Your hands cupping her face and her hands lazily draped around your hips
There are no fireworks, no sparks or floating hearts. It’s just you two, on this peaceful hill, sharing a private moment where the two of you once more allow yourself to bear your hearts out to one another.
It feels like an eternity before you two part. As you pull back, you find yourself staring back into Mizu’s eyes.
She, too, is staring, before she lowers her head to bump into your own, foreheads touching.
“If I can’t have you in this life,” Mizu whispers, voice a sweet song to your ears. “I’ll find you in the next.”
Her words leave your heart a hurting mess. Your face wobbles and suddenly tears are falling down your face.
“I love you, Mizu,” your voice shakes.
She doesn’t say anything. She doesn’t need to.
