Chapter 1: La Vagulette

Chapter Text

The roaring waves of the endless sea, a certain quiet to the crystal blue waters as an angelic voice cried out, singing to the ocean was a woman dancing along the shore line.

“Ah, si je pouvais vivre dans l’eau~! Le monde serait-il plus beau? Nous pardonneras-tu, ô chère mère?”

Her voice echoed across the beach, her feet gently stepping across the warm sand as her body swayed. She twirled around, the soft sunlight reflecting off of her snow white highlighted hair as she continued with her ballad. The woman’s voice shook with emotion, forlorn and heartbroken, as if she were crying out to someone–and unbeknownst to her, someone answered her sorrows.

In the distance, a monstrous being rose from the waters, but remained hidden from any prying eyes as he watched the maiden move across the shore. She was like an angel the gods had blessed upon the land, and he was fortunate enough to see this rehearsal of hers; he couldn’t help but to sing along with her, though kept his words to himself.

“L’eau dans son courant fait danser nos vies…”

“Son âme…Une larme au cœur de l'océan…”

“Et la cité, elle nourrit. Ainsi que toi, mon doux amour.”

“Troublée par le présage…D’un avenir sans espoir.”

The woman stopped, looking back towards the land before turning to face the ocean, feeling the cool gentle breeze against her face. She looked lost in thought, staring out to the waves. Her heterochromic eyes sparkled with inspiration as she then looked down to see the water rolling in over her bare feet. She chuckled softly, kneeling down and cupped up some saltwater into her hands, watching it trickle down from her fingertips

‘Her hair resembles the body of a jellyfish, and her eyes are two shades of beautiful ocean water…’ he remained quiet, but the large creature of the depth did nothing but let his mind race about the woman. He watched her closely, wanting nothing more but to make his way to the beach to greet her, though knew it was taboo for him to get any further–though he was already overstepping by being at the surface like this.

“Furina? Lady Furina!?” a distant voice called out as the white haired woman looked up, alerted by the voice and stood straight as she turned to another woman jogging up to her.

“Lady Furina, there you are…I thought you had been lost at sea, or worse–eaten by a dragon nonetheless…” The woman had long silky eggplant hair with electric amethyst eyes. She seemed distant, yet when she had mentioned the idea of Furina being in danger she sounded uneasy.

“Ah–! Miss Chlorinde! Not to worry, I’m completely fine. I thought that coming out here would help me with my performance!” She giggled heartily, smiling to the woman. “But, hey–! I think I’ve found the right emotion for Clio! I’m sure to woo the audience at my next show!”

“A.. performance , my lady…?” Chloride looked down to her, off-put and confused. “Hm, you…came out here to rehearse ?! And without supervision…” She sighed heftily. “I’d never be able to forgive myself if something were to happen to you. The ocean is dangerous, you know, you shouldn’t be going so close by yourself…you could have asked me to accompany you.”

“Would you have even tagged along if I asked you? You would have told me ‘Oh, Lady Furina, don’t go~! Dragons and other ghastly beings will eat you up for lunch~!’ ” Furina mocked, posing dramatically to impersonate Chlorinde, all the while the woman stood there with her arms crossed, unamused by Furina’s case. “Why even mention dragons, Chloride? There’s no such thing, they only exist in fairy tales like the ones i perform on stage…”

“Dragons are very much real. I would advise you to remain alert, Lady Furina.” She suggested, and sighed, seeing Furina wasn’t listening. “Never mind that, let us return to the Court, the theater troupe has been worried.”

The smaller female complied, nodding to Chlorinde. She looked down to the sand, before gazing back out to the ocean, her heterochromic eyes seeming forlorn.

‘Was…someone watching me before Chlorinde got here…?’ she thought, staring out to the ocean, searching for something, or someone.

“Furina.” Chloride’s voice called out from aways, gesturing for her to follow along and return to the Court. Furina then turned away, hurrying off to make her way back home.

As the women fled the shoreline, that same monstrous being made himself more clear to the surface now that he wouldn’t be seen. His long body rose up as his coat of white fur slickened back by the saltwater dried almost instantly from being waterboarded. His fins glowed a bright and elegant blue, as colorful and pure as the sea itself, his horns the same. His piercing indigo gaze followed the young white haired woman, watching her distant figure leave the beach with her bodyguard. His low grumble shook the waves as his dragonic body remained far from land, unable to go to her.

‘If only I could enlighten her, that I do indeed exist–and I crave to see her full performance one day. Alas, I cannot…for I am the Hydro Sovereign Neuvillette and must remain in the cold waters of Fontaine…’ he thought. He desperately wanted to meet the woman, to hear her sing to him, for him to sing to her.

His head dropped slightly, his eyelids closing as the once beautiful day suddenly grew dark. Storm clouds rolled in, the skies across the Court of Fontaine began to turn dark and dreary as a heavy rain started to pour across the land.

For these were the tears the Hydro Sovereign cried for his unrequited love.
