Work Text:
Allison Reynolds wakes up on December 25th, to an empty bed. She pats around, only finding the white dog that Allison insists is actually a rat in disguise.
Sitting up, she looks around to find her girlfriend’s side of the bed messily made, the duvet simply just being brought up to the pillows. Allison looks around the room, finds it empty, and pulls the duvet off herself and inserts her feet into her slippers. She makes her way into the kitchen, where a hearty breakfast is being made by her lover.
Renee turns around at the sound of the door creaking and smiles, noticing her partner’s bed head. Although a beauty prodigy in the daytime, Allison Reynolds was not a pretty sleeper.
“Good morning, Alli.” Renee says, rolling sausage around on the griddle. “Now, Kevin and Aaron won't be getting here until way later, but Andrew, Neil, Dan and Matt will be here soon, Nicky’s in Germany with Erik, but I figured we could have a little Christmas with each other and open a couple gifts before everyone gets here?” Allison stumbles over to the griddle and wraps her arms around Renee’s waist, nodding her head against the other girl’s shoulder.
Renee picks up the sausage and sets it on a plate. She had already made two plates each with two pancakes, two sausage links and a cup of juice, each plate topped with each of the girl’s desires. Allison grabs her plate and juice, and walks over to the bar, taking a seat. Renee sits next to her, and Allison hears the pitter patter of little dog-rat nails on the floor. The dog, Ruby, looks up at Allison with pleading eyes. Sleepily, Allison gives the dog an eye roll, but cuts off a bit of sausage and feeds it to Ruby.
For the most part, the two eat their breakfast in silence, Renee giving Allison a chance to wake up and process the day. When they're both finished, Allison takes their plates, rinses the grease off and tucks them away in the dishwasher.
“Shall we?” Renee asks, gesturing to the tree set up with an abundance of presents, some for the couple, some for Ruby, most for the other foxes.
The two sit down on their plush carpet, Ruby following and laying down in the dog bed Allison had customized for her.
Renee had picked out two gifts, one small one and one fairly sized one. Allison pawed through the pile of gifts, trying to remember what each box contained. She selected one larger box and a smaller one, handing them to Renee.
“I would like to go first if that’s okay. Also, I request that you open the bigger.” Confused but trusting, Allison nods.
“You have the floor, m’lady.” Renee smiles and unwraps the large one first. Allison was one to go big or go home for the holidays. Unfortunately, Renee was someone who could be considered a minimalist. So when it came to gift giving, it truly was the thought that counts.
Renee’s box was an array of miniature squishmallows. As Renee did not have much of a childhood, and her current therapist suggested that she work on healing her inner child, Allison wanted to support her anyway she could.
“Thank you, Alli, these will go perfect with my others.” Renee beamed. Allison felt special. When the two of them had moved in together, Allison made sure Renee had a whole room for her to feel safe in. Currently that room was full of pastel colors, a soft twin bed, and a whole wall saved for all her stuffed animals. Allison knew she had done well.
Renee’s second gift was a set of matching pajamas for their small family. Allison, Renee and Ruby had a jacket that was a soft pink with black leggings. Renee thanked her once more, and set Ruby’s on her bed.
Next was Allison’s turn. Allison opened the small gift, which was an Ulta gift card with an absurd amount of money. Allison wasn’t sure where Renee had gotten the money, but she was thankful nonetheless. Allison does love her makeup.
When it came to the bigger box, Allison had to spend a hefty time unwrapping it. For there were layers upon layers of wrapping paper, string, and boxes. Allison was just about to give up, when she looked at Renee who was giggling.
“This is the last box, I promise.” Allison took the lid off the box, and froze.
A beautiful ring- with her and Renee’s birthstone sat on a white satin pillow.
“What kind of ring is this, because-”
“Alli.” Renee interjected. “I want to marry you. You have been nothing but supportive of me and have fought for me- for us- tooth and nail. I've considered this heavily, and I think I’m ready to be yours forever if you will be mine?”
Allison Reynolds was never much of a crier, but she couldn’t stop the tears welling in her eyes as she slipped the ring on her left ring finger. And as it fit perfectly, Allison knew it was meant to be.
