...
He could feel the heat rising off of her. "You're burning up," Ido said, his heart beating a little faster with worry.
Her Hau circulated slowly showing her illness. She looked up at him with tired eyes and tried to smile.
"Don't do that," he said, trying to be gentle as he could.
He had always had a soft spot for her, even when she was still a boy. And now she had become the most beautiful girl in the city, no, the world! The last thing he wanted was for her to be ill.
"Come, let me get you to bed," he insisted and placed a hand on her shoulder.
He couldn't help himself and let his thumb stroke over her soft skin. She sighed and leaned into his touch. He felt like his heart might burst.
"I don't know what's wrong," she whispered. "It just... it just hurts."
"You're ill, Eona," he replied. "But don't worry, I will make you well again."
She looked up at him and smiled. He could see the trust in her eyes and it warmed his heart. It was a slow progress to earn her trust after everything.
He gently led her into his bed chamber, a room he rarely used. His bed was a massive canopy, covered in thick blankets and furs. It was his place of comfort and solace, but now he would share it with the woman he loved.
"Rest now," he told her as he placed her down on the bed.
He would have left her to rest if not for the hand on his tunic. She held onto him tightly and begged him with her eyes to stay.
He could deny her nothing and soon joined her. She clung to him, shivering and moaning with discomfort. He ran his fingers through her hair, his other hand rubbing her back.
"Sleep," he urged. "Let your body heal."
She nuzzled his chest, so much like the Mirror Dragon. But this time, there would be no misunderstandings between them. He had waited so long for this, had been patient and gentle. His love for her had only grown and he felt that now she was beginning to feel the same.
Eona drifted off to sleep and Ido followed shortly after. They slept the rest of the night away and into the morning. By then, Eona's fever had broken and she was feeling much better.

...
Eona stood outside near the coy pond. The sun was shining, the wind blowing gently. Eona stood with her eyes closed, enjoying the sunlight on her face. Peace, it had been a long time since there had been any peace.
She didn't hear the footsteps approaching, only noticing him when she felt a presence nearby. Eona opened her eyes and looked at the man standing beside her.
A tall man, dressed in a dark green tunic. He had long black hair tied back from his face, revealing a handsome visage. He smiled at her, a gentle expression that had become familiar to her. Lord Ido the only other living Dragon Eye.
"Lord Ido," she greeted, her own smile gracing her face.
"Lady Eona," he returned.
There was no formality between them anymore. Not after everything they had gone through together. She had learned to trust him, to see him not as an enemy, but as an ally and friend.
"I brought you something," he said and presented her with a box.
Eona blinked in surprise. A gift? Why? She accepted it nonetheless and opened the box. Inside was a hair ornament, a beautiful dragon made of gold and jewels.
"It's lovely," she whispered.
"I hope you will wear it," he replied his dark gaze sliding to the side.
Eona's own gaze went to the pond and her reflection. She did not wear her hair long as she once had, instead keeping it shorter and in a braid. Her hair was now black, having lost its red color when her bond with the Mirror Dragon was broken.
"Of course," she agreed and turned her attention back to him.
His smile broadened, making him look younger. Eona felt a twinge in her heart and looked away. Ever since her bonding had ended, she had felt an ache in her chest. It had started small and barely noticeable, but over time, the ache had grown. She knew she had been lonely, but it was more than that. She was missing something and she could not say what.
"Would you allow me?" Ido asked.
Eona turned and let him remove the hair tie. She could not remember the last time someone had played with her hair. Ido brushed her hair out and then began to weave the strands into a simple braid.
Gentle fingers that she previously thought impossible for Ido. The braid was simple and when he was done, he took the ornament and attached it.
"Beautiful," he murmured.
Eona felt the ache in her chest lessen, but still it lingered. She moved closer to the older Dragon Eye, resting her head against his chest. His arms went around her, holding her close.
She could not say why, but she felt safe in his embrace. Safe and cared for. She had never felt such a way before and she was loath to part from him.
"Thank you," she whispered.
She did not know what the future would bring. But for now, she would enjoy the peace and the companionship.

...
Gently he ran his fingers through Eona's hair as she slept laying against his chest. The softness of her skin and the warmth of her body seeped into his. It had been years since they had met. Back then she was just a child and he an Apprentice Dragon Eye.
Time passed and their destinies intertwined. He had seen her grow into a fine young woman. Beautiful and strong.
It was no wonder the Mirror Dragon had chosen her. Eona was pure and kind, yet she was not a fool. She was fierce and brave, a warrior.
Ido could not say when he began to love her. Maybe it had been from the beginning, when she stood her ground against him. He could not help but admire her.
She stood against him time and time again. Then she came to rescue him, when he was being tortured by the Emperor. That moment, he swore to protect her, no matter what the cost.
Even now, his wounds were still healing. But the pain was worth it. Eona was alive and safe, that was all that mattered.
"Ido?"
His gaze moved to her face, seeing her awake and looking at him.
"Are you all right?" she asked, concern in her voice.
Her eyes went to the bandages on his chest checking for blood.
"I am fine," he replied and touched her cheek.
He couldn't help himself and ran his fingers over her face, caressing her. Her eyes softened and her lips curved into a smile.
"It's late, you should be sleeping," she scolded gently.
He chuckled warmly at the scolding. The words were an echo of his own just a few hours prior.
"Perhaps," he conceded. "But so should you."
She shook her head. "I can't sleep. Not after everything."
"It's over, Eona," he assured her, "We are alive and safe. The Emperor has promised us peace."
Eona nodded, but there was still uncertainty in her eyes. He pulled her close, embracing her tightly. She relaxed in his hold and nuzzled his chest. The affection was more than he hoped for.
"Stay with me?" she asked quietly.
"Always."
He kissed her forehead and she gave him a smile. She settled back down, her head resting on his chest. He stroked her back soothingly, hoping to lull her to sleep.
In the darkness, with her in his arms, he finally felt peace. He would not lose her, he would protect her. For now and for always. He would make up for mistakes of his past.
For her, he would do anything.
For his beloved.

...
She was trembling, her hands covered in blood. Blood. So much blood. She couldn't think, couldn't speak. All she could do was tremble and hold him.
"Eona," his voice was strained.
No, no, no. Please, no.
"Eona, listen to me," he spoke again.
His hand cupped her cheek it was blood stained. She stared down at him, seeing his pale face and pain filled eyes. She felt her heart breaking.
"It will be all right," he tried to reassure her.
It was not. Nothing was. How could it be? He was dying, bleeding out in her arms. Tears fell from her eyes and landed on his cheeks. He was injured protecting her.
"I can't lose you," she cried.
She was so scared, more afraid than she had ever been. She had almost lost him once, when the Emperor had taken him. She couldn't lose him. Not again.
"You won't," he promised, a weak smile on his face.
She shook her head, tears falling faster. Her vision blurred, but she could still see the pain in his eyes. Eona tried to staunch the bleeding, but there was too much. It kept coming and he was getting weaker.
"I love you," he whispered, his eyes closing.
No.
She could feel him slipping away and her heart shattered. No, no, no. She could not lose him.
"I love you."
His breathing slowed, his pulse faded. He was fading. Eona sobbed, holding him tightly, desperately. She couldn't breathe, she couldn't think. Her world was falling apart and there was nothing she could do.
She couldn't lose him.
"I do, Eona," Ido's voice spoke.
"I love you, Ido," she breathed and leant over him tears falling, "Please, don't leave me. Don't go. I love you."
He smiled, his eyes opening. "I will never leave you."
Eona gasped and sat up in her bed, tears rolling down her cheeks. Her heart was racing and she was shaking. The room was dark and quiet.
She was alone in her bed, not an uncommon occurrence. The dream, the memory, it still haunted her. So real, so vivid. It was all she could see when she closed her eyes.
She couldn't forget the feeling of his blood on her hands. The terror she felt at almost losing him. The grief and the anger. It had all been too much.
A knock on the door had her turning her attention.
"Eona?" Ido's voice was soft.
"Come in," she answered as she swiped at her eyes.
There was no need to worry him. He opened the door and stepped into her chambers. He was dressed in a plain shirt and trousers. His hair was loose and free.
The light from the hallway wasn't enough for Eona to see his features, but she knew he was concerned. She could hear it in his voice, feel it in his aura.
"What's wrong?" he asked as he approached.
She shook her head and tried to smile. "Nothing, I'm fine."
He wasn't convinced, but didn't push the matter. He moved to her bedside and sat down. The mattress dipped under his weight and she couldn't help but lean towards him.
"Another nightmare?" he asked as he lightly drew her close to him.
Eona sighed and rested her head on his shoulder and admitted, "Yes."
She was silent, the words caught in her throat. It was hard for her to voice her thoughts. Even harder to tell him how much it had scared her. To lose Ido would break her heart.
"Do you want to talk about it?" he asked, his voice gentle.
"I don't want to lose you," she said quietly.
Ido shifted, drawing her into his lap, his hands cupping her cheeks. She could see his face now and the emotions there. He was worried and he was sad.
"Eona," he murmured, his voice full of affection, "I will never leave you. Whether in life or in death I am yours. My soul will be with you always."
Tears fell from her eyes as he spoke. His words were soothing and her heart swelled. She refused to allow him to die for her. And if he did, she would follow him.
"I love you," she told him, her voice barely a whisper, "If you were to die, I would follow you. Wherever you go, I will follow. You are my heart."
Ido was silent for a moment and then he was kissing her. The kiss was gentle, loving. She sighed into the kiss, her hands grasping at his shirt. He held her tighter, his mouth moving over hers.
They broke apart, both breathing heavily. Ido rested his forehead against hers, his eyes closed. She could feel the emotion coming off him, the love and the devotion.
"I will not leave you," he repeated, "Never again."
He sealed his promise with another kiss and Eona clung to him.
Chapter Text
...
It was supposed to be a simple mission, that's what Eona told herself. Get in, find the information, get out. Easy. But no, of course it wasn't. Why would it be?
Not only had they run into the enemy, but her own people as well. A faction that did not believe she should be the Mirror Dragon Eye. A group of rebels that would rather the dragons perish than work together.
"Dammit!" she cursed and dodged an arrow.
Her Hau was up, protecting her. But she couldn't keep it up forever. She had to take the enemy out or flee. She knew that they wouldn't stop, not until she was dead.
"Eona!"
There was a shout and then Ido was beside her, his own Hau protecting them. He was furious, his expression murderous. She was in trouble, she knew that.
"What were you thinking?" he hissed as he dragged her away.
"I wasn't!" she yelled back.
Her temper flared, her emotions were high. She was not some child and she did not appreciate being treated like one. She was the Mirror Dragon Eye, his equal! Not some child who needed to be coddled.
"Clearly," he growled, his grip tightening.
They were near the exit and soon they would be able to get out of there. Once they were safe, then they could talk. But for now, they needed to escape.
The doors burst open and soldiers poured in. They were not her people, nor were they Ido's. No, these were mercenaries. Mercenaries that had been hired to kill them.
"Ido," she whispered.
"Hang on," he muttered.
They were outnumbered and they were surrounded. Eona knew they had no choice but to fight. Ido would not abandon her, not even if it meant his death.
"On three," Ido said, his voice low.
"One," Eona began.
"Two," Ido finished.
Together, they attacked. Their Haus were strong, but even their combined strength could not keep them safe forever. They drew upon the power of their dragons.
Lightning cracked, fire erupted, wind blew. It was a fierce battle, one that would have killed many. But not Ido and Eona. No, they would survive.
The last mercenary fell and silence fell over the room. Eona was breathing heavily, her Hau still glowing. She looked to Ido, his expression was one of relief and fear.
"That was reckless," he said, his voice shaky.
"I know," she tried to explain, "But I had to do something. If we didn't find that information..."
"We would have found it," he insisted, "With less danger to you."
Eona opened her mouth to argue, but then he saw the pain in his eyes. The fear. It halted her own words.
"You could have died," he whispered.
His hand reached out, grasping her wrist. He was trembling, his grip tight. She could feel his heartache. It echoed her own.
"I could not live without you," he confessed, "If you had died... If you had left me... I would have followed."
"Ido," she murmured and moved closer, "I'm sorry. I just... I don't want anyone else to die for me."
"I will gladly die for you," he vowed, "But you must promise me that you will not die."
She nodded and rested her forehead against his chest. His arms went around her, embracing her. Her heart swelled and the ache in her chest lessened.
"I won't," she promised, "As long as you're with me."
"Nothing is ever simple with you, is it?" He asked, his voice filled with fondness.
She laughed softly, "No, it isn't."

...
Eona woke slowly, her mind coming out of its haze. There was a warm weight pressed against her back and an arm was wrapped around her. She didn't want to wake. It was so peaceful, the first night in a while that she hadn't been haunted by dreams.
She tried to burrow deeper, hiding herself from the morning. A chuckle had her cracking her eyes open. Ido's face came into focus, a lazy grin on his lips.
"Good morning," his voice was soft.
"Morning," she replied sleepily.
She snuggled closer to him and closed her eyes. The night had been wonderful, her dreams had not haunted her.
"What time is it?" Eona questioned.
"Just a little after dawn," Ido answered, his thumb brushing her cheek, "You can go back to sleep if you want. We don't have any duties today."
She hummed, the offer was tempting. She had had a rough couple nights. She had tossed and turned, her dreams filled with nightmares. It was only with him at her side that they disappeared.
"We should probably get up," she yawned, but didn't move.
"Probably," he chuckled.
Neither moved and instead remained huddled under the blankets. Warmth and comfort surrounded her. The scent of the forest, rain, and spices filled her nose. She could almost forget everything else.
"Did you sleep well?" he asked and his breath was warm.
"I did," Eona smiled.
She felt better than she had in a while. Her dreams were peaceful, her sleep was undisturbed. With Ido by her side, she could face the coming days.
"No dreams?" his tone was serious.
"None," she reassured him, her eyes opening.
Ido's face was inches from hers, his gaze dark. The heat of his body warmed her, his touch soothed. She sighed softly, her eyes fluttering.
"Good," his mouth quirked and his fingers grazed her lips.
Before she could respond, his lips were against hers. His kiss was gentle, a sweet caress. The kiss was enough to take her breath away.
When he pulled away, her body ached for his touch. She wanted more, to lose herself in his kisses.
"Let's stay a bit longer," she murmured, her fingers curling around his neck.
"Whatever you want," he chuckled.
Her reply was lost to his kiss.

...
Eona could only watch the festivities with envy. All around her the people were celebrating. Tonight was the festival honoring the dragons. The gods had given them gifts and protected them. Tonight, everyone could feast, dance, and celebrate.
Except her.
Her hands were dirty, her body tired. There were bruises forming from being thrown, her backside aching. The whip marks stung.
Master wouldn't allow her to attend. Even though she was a Dragoneye now, she still obeyed him. No matter how much it hurt her to do so.
'One day,' she promised, 'One day.'
But deep down she didn't truly believe it. This would be her life. Until her Master was dead, or her death came first.
'I want to dance, I want to eat, and sing.'
She could hear the laughter, smell the food. Her stomach rumbled. It was hard to ignore the voices, the noise. But it wasn't her choice.
"Lord Eon," a voice broke into her thoughts.
She stiffened, the urge to flee overwhelming. It had been months since she had become a Dragoneye. Yet her master's hold on her hadn't lessened. If anything, his grip had tightened.
"L-lord Ido," she stammered, bowing deeply.
She hid a wince as the wounds on her back pulled. Hopefully the older man hadn't noticed. He didn't need another reason to berate her. She was learning to control her powers from him. So far, Ido didn't have a high opinion of Lord Eon.
"Stand, Lord Eon," Ido commanded, his tone firm, "What are you doing out here? Shouldn't you be enjoying the festival?"
"M-master doesn't permit it," Eona managed, her throat tight, "He's angry. The other lords were not happy."
"You're a Dragoneye now, no one has the right to tell you no except for the Emperor," the man stated, his voice soft, "Lord Eon, you must stand up for yourself. Don't let him treat you like this."
Eona's mouth was dry. How was she supposed to do that exactly? Her Master would beat her or worse. Just for disobeying.
"I-I'm sorry, Lord Ido," her voice trembled, her chin dipping, "I'm not allowed."
Ido huffed, his hands clenched at his sides. Anger rolled off him in waves. She'd never seen him like this. She stepped back from him, fear curling inside.
The urge to run away from Ido was strong. She should just bolt, hide. She wasn't worth getting upset over.
"Why do you accept this treatment, Eon?" his words were a harsh snap.
"It's not a matter of choice," she returned, her tone was sharp and bitter, "It's the way things are."
"And if I can give you a different option?" he questioned, his arms crossed.
She didn't believe him. It was too easy. Too convenient. There was no way it could happen. There was no escaping her predicament without someone dying. And she would rather die herself than cause a death.
"That is impossible," her answer was resigned, her tone dull, "Master won't allow it."
"And if I were to offer you a place away from him? Would you take it?"
Eona stared at the older man. Did he understand what he was saying? How dangerous the implication was. Her Master would never let her go. Or if he did she would revealed as a girl.
"It can't be done," she denied, her heart hurting.
"Let me make you an offer," his eyes met hers, a flicker of determination, "Spend a day with me and decide if you wish to remain or not."
"Lord Ido, it is impossible," she protested, "My master-"
"I'll handle him," he interrupted her, his jaw set, "I will not fail."
"Please, it isn't a good idea," she urged, "You don't understand."
"Eon, trust me," he insisted, his hand cupping her face.
His skin was warm and the gesture was a shock. What was he doing? Why would he want to help her? She didn't understand him.
"Why are you doing this?" her eyes narrowed, her hands clenching.
"Because you deserve better than the fate handed to you," he responded, "You're not an object to be owned or treated as less."
"Even if that is true, there is no escape," her chin dropped, her voice strained, "No matter where I go, my master will find me. And when he does, he'll kill me. No one will stop him. No one will dare."
"Eon," his voice was firm and his hand tilted her face, "Look at me."
Reluctantly, she raised her eyes and met his gaze. Those amber colored orbs were mesmerizing and filled her with longing. It had been a while since she felt such emotions.
"Let me save you," he pled, his thumb brushing her cheek, "Eon, let me keep you safe. Give me a chance."
"What is the catch, Lord Ido?" her brow furrowed, her teeth catching her lip, "There is always a price."
"There's no catch, Eon," his expression was sincere, "A chance to show you that not everyone is your enemy."
"Why are you doing this?" She demanded.
There was no way that he was telling the truth. He couldn't. She'd heard stories of what happened when the apprentices didn't obey. It was too much to hope for.
"Is it so hard to believe that I want to help?" his tone was gentle, his head tilting.
"Yes, it is," she bit out, anger seeping into her words.
"I know you've had a difficult time adjusting," he acknowledged, his hand sliding into hers, "That your Master and the other Dragoneyes have made you suffer. Eon, please, I'm not trying to deceive or hurt you. Let me show you a kinder world."
"How can I possibly believe that?" her eyes burned, tears welling.
"Then trust that I won't force or coerce you into doing something," he offered, "Take a risk and have some faith. Please, give me a chance."
"Why would you do that for me?" her voice was hoarse.
"Because," he began and took a breath, "Because, Eon, I can't stand by and watch any longer. You're in pain, hurting. Let me ease your suffering. Trust me, have faith in me."
There was pure honesty in his face and his tone. The look in his eyes was pleading and his body language spoke volumes. He was telling the truth.
Could she really trust him? Could she take a leap of faith and place her life in his hands? Was it a gamble worth taking?
"Okay," her decision was sudden, her stomach dropping, "I'll trust you but you have to know something. Its something my master has made me hide for years."
Ido have her an encouraging nod, his posture straight. The intensity in his gaze was unnerving and the air was tense. Whatever was happening was serious.
"I am a girl," her confession was a whisper, her words trembling, "This is a secret no one knows except for my Master."
Silence was the only answer.
Her nerves were stretched thin, her muscles taut. Fear curled through her and her anxiety rose. What was he thinking? Did he believe her?
"You're a female," his reply was low, his brows furrowing, "Hidden and forced to act as a male."
"Yes, it is true," her words were stronger, more sure, "Lord Ido, is that going to change your mind?"
"Change my mind?" his tone was curious, a hint of humor, "What gave you the impression it would? I told you. You're a person. A woman, not a possession. I would be honored to spend a day with you."
"So," her throat was tight, her pulse quickening, "You're not disappointed? Angry? Repulsed?"
"Of course not," he retorted, a flash of disbelief, "Did you think I'd abandon you? Treat you differently because you're a female? Eon, you are a powerful, strong person. Not a thing."
"Are you really not going to turn me over?" her eyes were wide.
"Never," he assured her, his tone adamant, "Your secret is safe with me."
Her shoulders dropped and a shuddering breath left her. His words were comforting, his tone genuine. It had been a while since she was shown compassion.
"Thank you, Lord Ido," her lips twitched, her heart pounding.
"There's no need to thank me," he waved off her gratitude, "Come, we will spend time at the festival then you will spend the night in the Rat Dragon Hall."
"Really?"
"Of course," his head bobbed, a smile playing across his mouth, "You will be safe and comfortable."
"I..." her words failed, her cheeks warming, "Thank you."
"Don't worry about anything, Eon," his words were a reassurance, "Just relax and have fun."
"Eona," her response was abrupt, her voice shaky, "My real name is Eona. And I'd love to have fun, but it's not going to be easy. My master will be looking for me."
"I can assure you he won't find you," Ido said firmly, a smirk twisting his lips, "Now, come. Let's celebrate."
...
Ido led her through the city, the lanterns casting light on them. It was amazing and beautiful. Everything she'd dreamed of and more.
They stopped at a street vendor, the smells divine. She watched him purchase meat pies, handing one to her. When he smiled at her, her heart stuttered.
'Stop it, you idiot,' her inner voice chided, 'He's being nice, that's all. He's a Dragoneye. Nothing can happen.'
She shook her head, her cheeks reddening. What was wrong with her? Her body was reacting oddly, her thoughts muddled.
"Is everything okay, Eona?" his words broke through her inner battle.
"I-it's fine, Lord Ido," her words stumbled, her stomach flipping.
"Please, call me Ido," his smile was blinding, his arm around her, "I don't want to hear the formality. Tonight is about you."
"But I can't," her protest was weak.
"Of course, you can," he retorted, his mouth curved, "Or is there another reason?"
"Well," her eyes dropped, her fingers twisting together, "No."
He stepped closer to her, her nerves tingling. His arm tightened and he brushed a stray strand from her face.
"Good, we have a wonderful evening ahead," he murmured, his eyes sweeping her, "We're going to have fun, Eona. And then you will spend the night as my guest. We'll discuss our plans tomorrow."
She leaned into the touch, her breath hitching. His hand was warm and strong, his arm supporting her. It was strange, having him be so kind to her.
"I'll try," she whispered, her tongue wetting her lips.
"Don't try, Eona," his voice was a caress, his words a tease, "Be bold, be free. Take a chance. It's the only way you will find happiness."
"I..." her sentence drifted and her eyes searched his face, "Do you promise?"
"With all my heart," his answer was swift and his lips touched her forehead.
She leaned in close to him. His scent of vanilla and orange filled her senses. This was the safest she had felt since her powers had manifested. She would never have believed she could have this moment.
"You're the only one," her murmur was quiet, her eyes shining, "I have ever talked to like this. No one else."
"Am I now?"
"Yes," she nodded and blushed, "You're not angry?"
"No," his reply was short and his grin was dazzling, "You're an amazing woman. One that I am happy to spend time with."
"R-really?" her cheeks were hot, her voice cracking, "Do you mean that?"
"With every fiber of my being," his words were fervent and his gaze steady, "You deserve this and more. Never forget it."
"Thank you," her tone was soft, her heart melting, "I wish things could be different."
"Who's to say they can't?" his hand was gentle, his finger under her chin, "Maybe the gods will listen."
His Hau pulsed, his power filling her. It was soothing, the magic swirling around her. A sense of peace descended and her worries dissipated.
"How do you do that?" her eyes widened, her hand clutching his.
"It's the gift of the Rat Dragon," he answered, "The power to comfort, the ability to soothe. You can feel my intent and the feelings I emit."
She could feel the Mirror Dragon shifting in the Energy World. Its scales shimmered and a hum emanated from its throat. There was a sense of contentment.
"I see," she mused and her hand was still gripping his, "What does that mean?"
"Whatever you choose, I'm here," his words were a pledge, his hand squeezing hers, "I will not abandon or betray you. Even if the others find out, you have a home in the Rat Dragon Hall."
The truth sang in the worlds. All of it was sincere and he would stand by her. He had accepted her secret, her gender, and had given her his vow. In turn she accepted him but she didn't know how.
"Thank you, Ido," her voice was a hush and she leaned in, "And I do mean that."
"As do I, Eona," his reply was a whisper and his lips hovered above hers, "Let's enjoy the rest of the night."
The two walked through the stalls, stopping at a few. She enjoyed the music, the people. Everything was bright and colorful. It was so much better than hiding.
"You're beautiful," his murmur was against her ear.
His chest was pressed solidly against her back. Once again she hid a twinge of pain as it pressed against her wounds. This time it wasn't missed.
"Eona, why did you wince?" his voice was a question, his fingers touching her jaw.
She tried to deny it, her mouth open, but no sound came out. It was hard to lie to him.
"Please, tell me the truth," he pleaded, his arm encircling her.
"M-my back," she choked out, her vision blurring, "I'm sorry. Don't be angry."
"What is on your back, Eona?" his demand was gentle, his hold on her tight.
"Wh-whipping scars," she confessed, her shame evident, "And new whipping wounds. My master has taken his displeasure out on me many times."
Ido hissed, his anger vibrating through him. The Hau was swirling and his face was stormy. She swallowed and bit her lip.
Fear coursed through her and her stomach lurched. Had she made a mistake in telling him? Was he angry at her?
"Does your Master always punish you like this?" his inquiry was in a calm but strained voice.
"Usually he is harsher," her explanation was weak, her heart racing, "This time was worse because I am a Dragoneye. That is the reason he has used the whip."
"I will kill him," the declaration was dark, a deadly tone.
"You can't," she protested, her eyes widening, "If he dies, it will cause an uprising. Please, Ido, you can't."
"That is where you're wrong, Eona," his retort was sharp, his hands on her arms, "There is nothing to stop me."
She opened her mouth to continue to argue with him. Instead he redirected her away from the crowds. It didn't take her long to figure out where they were going.
The Rat Dragon Hall was just as grandiose and impressive as the others. There were people outside, celebrating the festival. Music and laughter carried and the food was divine.
"Lord Ido!" Greeted the servant.
"We're not to be disturbed," the older man ordered, his grip tight, "Eon will be my guest."
"As you command," the servants bowed, "Should we prepare a bath, Lord Eon?"
"Yes, a bath and some tea would be great," Ido instructed.
"Right away," the servant confirmed.
Once inside, the door was closed. They were alone, his attention fully on her. The air was tense and heavy, the silence almost unbearable.
"W-what are we doing, Ido?" she questioned, her hands shaking, "Why are we here?"
Ido ushered her across the room and to sit in a chair. Then he directed, "Turn, let me see your back."
"P-please," her plea was soft, her throat closing.
"It's not a request," his command was stern.
Swallowing, she did as he said and turned, her back to him. The material was lifted and she hissed in pain as it pulled the cuts.
"Eona, the lashes are fresh," his observation was low and his anger was palpable, "How long ago did this happen?"
She didn't answer. Couldn't.
"Eona," his tone was firm, "How long?"
"Just before you came across me," she admitted, her shoulders hunching, "Master didn't approve of my progress and was impatient."
"Damn him," his curse was muttered and the touch on her skin was soft, "Why didn't you say anything before? You're lucky it didn't get infected. These should have been seen to immediately."
"Because, it doesn't matter," she replied, her teeth grinding, "I've been beaten before. Why is it important now? If I can't protect myself, how can I expect anyone else to?"
"Eona, it does matter," his reply was quick and he turned her around to face him, "Not because of your power, but because you are a person. No one has the right to harm you."
"It's my life, Lord Ido," she shot back, her jaw set, "What's the point of it? I'm not important. Only my Dragon."
"The Mirror Dragon is not all you are," his words were fierce, "Your power is only a part of who you are."
"A slave is still a slave, regardless of their rank," her reply was bitter, her lips pursing.
"Then stop seeing yourself as a slave and become a person," his rebuke was a harsh snap and she flinched back, "See yourself as I see you, a strong, capable, smart, intelligent, and caring young woman. One who is worthy."
Her heart was racing, her breath catching. The look in his eyes was fierce, his emotions pouring out of him. The energy around him was turbulent, his Hau glowing.
"Y-you don't know me," she sputtered, her words failing her.
"But I would like to," his admission was earnest, his hand cradling her face, "I have never met someone quite like you. So brave, so full of passion."
"Really?" her doubt was clear.
"I'm not lying," his assurance was adamant, his body close.
"You're too kind," she argued.
"Maybe," he countered, his eyes flashing, "Or maybe I want to know everything about you."
"Oh."
"So," his mouth curved and his voice dropped, "Will you let me?"
"I'm scared," her confession was soft, her eyes wide, "It's all I've known for so long. Being afraid and fighting."
"I won't let you fight alone anymore," he swore, his lips brushing hers and she gasped, "You will no longer be a prisoner. Tonight is your freedom, Eona. What will you choose?"
Her decision was immediate.
"My freedom," her reply was a whisper, her breath quick.
"I promise you won't regret it," his words were a murmur, his mouth a breath away, "Now let me heal your injuries. We will deal with him later."
"Okay."
"Good, now hold still."

...
"It was a wonderful ceremony, wasn't it, Eon?"
Ido was standing beside her, a warm presence. Today was their wedding day, the day they had both anticipated. Finally, they would be together.
"It was perfect," she agreed, a smile playing on her lips, "Although, the food was delicious. And the drinks flowed."
"It is a day to celebrate," he declared, a chuckle, "We are husband and wife."
"Finally," she murmured, her head resting on his shoulder, "You've made me so happy, Ido."
"Likewise," he returned and pressed his lips to her hair, "You're so beautiful, my beloved. Now come, I think it's time to go to our rooms."
"Lead the way," she responded, her fingers sliding into his.
They were walking, the crowd dispersing. The lanterns were bright, the path well lit. Servants were hurrying, carrying trays of food. The guests were calling out their good wishes, the sounds merry.
"Congratulations," shouted a voice, "May you live long and happy lives."
"Thank you," Eona's reply was a shout, her heart singing.
"And thank you for coming," Ido added, a laugh leaving him.
"Lord and Lady Dragoneye," the servant bowed, a smile on his face, "Here are your chambers. Should we prepare a bath?"
"No, we are not to be disturbed," Ido instructed, his tone firm, "Tonight is for us and us alone. You will make sure the hall knows. No one comes or goes without our permission."
"Yes, Lord," the servant was quick, bowing and hurrying off.
The two walked in and Ido closed the door, the sound final. A click signified a lock and her husband was watching her.
"Alone at last," her husbands grin was wide, a glint in his eyes.
"Indeed," she smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck, "At last, no more interruptions. Just us."
"We won't be interrupted," his reply was a whisper and he kissed her, his touch reverent, "Just a couple, enjoying each other."
"Sounds amazing," she hummed, her teeth nipping his lower lip, "Now, can we do that, my love? Enjoy the moment?"
"Anything for my beautiful bride," his pledge was fervent and he claimed her mouth, his lips hot.
She leaned into him, her body pliant. His tongue delved, his touch insistent. She sighed and opened further, her fingers tugging on his clothes.
"I can't wait," she panted, her chest heaving, "Please, Ido, no more waiting."
"Whatever you wish," his vow was a low growl, his desire evident, "Tell me."
"Show me, love," her eyes met his, her voice hoarse, "Take me to bed. I'm ready."
He scooped her up and held her close. Her hands were tangled in his robes and her nose nuzzled his neck.
"Tonight, you will feel every emotion, my wife," he breathed against her ear, his hands caressing her, "And you will experience pleasure unlike any you have before. Are you willing?"
"Yes," she whispered, her heart thundering, "Always yes."
His touch was slow and deliberate. Each motion was unhurried and thorough. Her garments were peeled away and his hands explored her.
"Gorgeous," his compliment was genuine and his lips followed the trail his fingers blazed.
She sighed, her body relaxing. He was taking care of her. Not hurting her. Her nerves were humming and a pleasant tingle started between her legs.
"Let me taste you," he demanded, his hands spreading her thighs, "All of you."
Before she could respond, his mouth was on her. Sucking and licking her core, his tongue delving deep. Her cry was a high-pitched wail and her fingers gripped his hair.
"Ido," his name was a moan, her hips rocking, "Oh."
"Do you like it?" his inquiry was a low murmur, his thumbs caressing her skin.
"Y-yes," she groaned, her body writhing, "Don't stop. Please."
He complied, his focus solely on her. Pleasure was coursing through her and a wave of energy surrounded them. It was their energies and magic intertwined.
"That's it," his encouragement was a purr, his breath blowing, "Give into the feelings. Let go."
"I-I," she gasped, her back arching, "It's... Oh gods."
"Come for me, Eona," he insisted, his fingers thrusting, his pace punishing.
Her cry was a shriek and her release washed over her. Waves of bliss pulsed through her, the sensations intense. She could barely catch her breath, her heartbeat wild.
"Breathe, my darling," he soothed, his fingers easing, his palm rubbing her inner thigh, "You're incredible, beautiful. You are a gift, Eona."
"S-stop it," she mumbled, her cheeks burning.
"It's true," he argued, his fingers circling her core, "You are the most powerful woman in the land. An asset. One who has chosen to love and spend her life with me. And I am grateful."
"I love you," her tone was hushed, her heart full, "There will never be another. Only you."
"And you're the only one I've wanted," he promised, his expression tender, "Now, I'm going to love you and make you mine."
"Then please, show me, my husband," she beseeched, her hips lifting.
He didn't respond and his lips were on her breast, his fingers still buried in her. There was a sharp bite and a pull, his free hand gripping her hair.
"Mine," his possession was fierce and his body was covering hers.
She cried out, his thrust hard and deep. He was moving and she was clutching his shoulders. The pace was fast, their breaths short.
"I-Ido," she whined, her nails scratching, "More. Harder. Deeper."
"Yes, Eona," his grunt was harsh, his mouth biting and sucking her throat.
"F-feels," her whimper was high-pitched and her body tightened.
"I feel you," his exclamation was a harsh groan and his grip was tight, his movements faster, "Together. Let's come together. I'm almost there."
"Yes," her agreement was a breathless scream and she clenched, her orgasm washing over her.
He was shouting and her walls were gripping him. It was a long moment before their climax receded. Both were gasping, their bodies twitching.
"That was..." her sentence trailed and she couldn't form the words.
"Everything and more," his response was a pant, his weight resting on her, "How do you feel, my beloved?
"Amazing, wonderful, complete," her answer was immediate, her hands caressing him.
"Perfect," he chuckled and eased out, rolling to the side.
"What now?" her question was uncertain, her brow furrowing.
"We're just starting, love," his answer was simple and his arms pulled her close, his head resting on hers, "This is only the beginning. Of us, our future. Everything."
"Oh," her eyes widened, her pulse skittering.
"Don't worry," his reassurance was firm and his thumb touched her cheek, "We're in this together. For as long as the gods will allow. Now sleep, Eona. I'm here."
"Always?" her tone was sleepy.
"Of course," his pledge was steady and his eyes were drifting, "Always."

...
She looked at Ryko then back at Ido. She could keep fighting. There was even the chance she'd kill some of the guards. In the end though it wouldn't matter, eventually Ido or the guards would overwhelm her.
"No!" Ryko's voice was panicked.
"Enough, Eon," Ido commanded, his tone firm, "This is the final warning. Surrender."
She didn't speak. Didn't move.
"Damnit, Eona," the words were a growl, "You're no good to anyone dead."
She could feel his Hau pressing on her. His intent was clear, his desire absolute. He was trying to get her to yield.
"I know you want to keep fighting," his explanation was quiet, his eyes boring into hers, "But if you don't give up, your friend dies."
Rykko was on the ground conscious and alive but only barely. Several guards had the large islander pinned and there weapons were at the ready.
Ido stood across from her, his swords were in a loose form. If he wanted, he could have ended this. But the Dragoneye was giving her a choice.
"Please," his request was strained and his Hau pulsed, a push, "Choose wisely. Your Master is gone. There is no hope. Save yourself and save him. Surrender, Eona."
She could taste the vanilla and orange of his Hau and Dragon. They were offering their comfort and the energy was a caress. Her mind was cloudy and she shook her head, her thoughts muddled.
'Stop it,' her internal voice scolded, 'He's messing with your emotions. Stay focused. Think about how to escape.'
But there wasn't an escape. Not this time.
She was injured and bleeding. Exhaustion was a heavy weight and the cuts burned. Her vision was wavering and the power in her was draining.
"Eona," his tone was soothing, his steps slow and measured as he approached, "Listen to me, surrender."
"Damnit, stay back," she protested and backed away, her stance shaky.
"Not until you understand," he argued, his hand extended, "You need help. You can't fight any longer."
"You've taken everything else," her retort was a snarl, her eyes blazing, "You killed my Master and the other Dragoneyes. Don't come any closer to me!"
Ido froze but there wasn't anywhere for Eona to go. He knew her injuries were worse than they seemed. All it would take was one wrong move and her condition would deteriorate rapidly.
"Look around you," his observation was calm, his head gesturing, "The others are no more. You have nowhere to go."
"Because of you!" her accusation was a hiss and her anger rose, her fists clenched, "My family is dead, the others are slaughtered, and the Dragons are trapped. Is this what you wanted, Ido?"
"I was doing my duty," he declared, his eyes narrowed, "The Empire had to change. Those men and their Masters would not have allowed it. That's not who they are, were."
"And you were so noble," her scorn was dripping, her words bitter, "What was the point? Tell me. Did it make you feel better? Killing your fellow Dragoneyes and trapping the Dragons. What do you have to show for it?
"Peace," his answer was instant, his gaze unwavering, "Stability, unity. The world will move forward."
Eona saw that he believed his words. To him, he had been in the right.
"So, the blood of the innocent was worth it," her sneer was sharp, her body tense, "Was it easy? Murdering the others?"
"Harder than you'll ever know," his confession was a hush, his posture straight, "I had known those men a very long time."
Her adrenaline was fading, her limbs aching. It wouldn't be long before she collapsed. Her decision had to be made soon. The visage of Ido blurred as she fought to remain standing.
"Why?" her question was soft and tears were leaking, her vision clearing, "Why are you allowing me to live?"
"I have always had the Rat Dragon," he mused, his hands relaxed, "Its gift is healing and I can sense the illness in the land. When you are near, all is better. As long as you live, the land and the people will survive."
"Don't listen to him, Eon!" Shouted Ryko.
Eona's gaze flickered to her friend and her hands tightened on the hilts of her swords. Her eyes found Ido again.
"I'm tired, so very tired," her confession was quiet, her eyes searching his, "Spare Ryko and Lady Dela and I'll give myself up. Let them escape. That is the price of my surrender. Can you pay it, Ido?"
"Agreed," his reply was immediate and the guards backed away, their weapons returning to their sheaths.
"Eon," the shout from Dela was pained and her friends struggled to rise, "No, you can't. Fight, damnit. We can beat him."
"No," she denied, "We can't."
"Lady Dela, come with me," a servant said.
"No," the word was a snarl and her attention was fixed on Ido.
Eona ordered as she began to sway, "Go, both of you. Leave this place. You'll be safe."
"But-"
"No," her command was firm and her eyes met Dela's, "Just go. Please."
There was a long pause before Dela and Ryko left the room. Ido watched them go, his stare following their progress.
After a few minutes he said, "Now, my promise is fulfilled. It is your turn. Drop your weapons and submit."
Eona didn't argue. The clatter of the blades hitting the floor was a hollow sound. Her knees buckled and the world spun. She was caught before she hit the ground. Warm arms cradled her, the hold gentle.
"Finally, Eona," the words were a whisper against her ear, his scent a familiar and welcome vanilla and orange, "At last."
"What's happening, Ido?" she demanded, her hands fisting his clothes.
"Shhh, we will speak later," his reassurance was sincere, his grip sure, "Sleep, Eona. You're safe."
She did as he bid, her eyes drifting closed.
...
Ido ran his fingers through her hair, his touch was light. Eona's face was peaceful and her chest rose and fell evenly. Her color had returned, the pallor gone.
Their Hau was connected from the healing. He could feel her heartbeat right next to his own. Their energies were intertwined.
"It worked," he said softly and kissed her forehead.
"Of course, it did," a woman replied, her tone amused, "Although, it could have gone a lot faster. Why did you take so long?"
"It wouldn't have worked," he countered, his fingers grazing her cheek, "If I'd done that, she'd have hated me. This was the best way. She surrendered, accepted."
"Only because of the islander and her lady," the voice was firm, the footsteps echoing.
"That doesn't matter," he dismissed, "Eona chose."
"Hmm," his companion's noise was a noncommittal hum, "You've chosen, Lord Rat."
"Indeed," he answered and glanced up, "Will she have the scars?"
"I'm not sure," his guest confessed, a hand stroking the Mirror Dragon, "The whip wounds have healed. It will depend on how much of the Hau's power was used. There is nothing you can do."
"She's beautiful," he commented, his finger brushing her shoulder, "A survivor. One that can't be tamed."
"And now, she is yours," the statement was an acknowledgement, the smile visible, "Be happy."
Was she his? Doubtful but he would earn her love. No matter how long it would take.
"We have time," his assurance was sincere, his touch reverent, "All the time in the world."
"Perhaps, perhaps not," the other mused, the body stiffening, "I will return in a year."
Ido nodded and picked up Eona. His bride needed her rest. There would be no further interruptions.
...
Eona opened her eyes, her senses alert. Where was she? The last thing she remembered was collapsing and the feeling of Ido's arms around her.
"Where am I?" her inquiry was soft and the bed was soft and warm.
"You're home," came the soft reply to her right.
Eona jumped, her eyes finding him. He was seated, watching her, and a small table held food and tea.
"W-where are we?" her demand was breathless, her heart hammering.
"In the Dragoneye Hall," he stated and leaned forward, "I have given you rooms befitting your status."
"I don't have any status," her denial was sharp and her hand curled into a fist.
She was supposed to be a prisoner, not a guest.
"But you are the Mirror Dragon's Dragoneye," he reasoned and sipped the cup, "This is where you should reside. Here."
"As a slave," she countered and glared, "Not a Dragoneye."
"I would prefer you stay by my side," his confession was genuine, his hand outstretched, "You would want for nothing, Eona."
"Is that how you see this?" she shot back, her voice rising, "You offer me gifts and riches and in turn I'm grateful and obedient. Well, it won't work, Lord Rat."
"Do you honestly believe I'd keep you like a pet, Eona?" his response was quiet and his words were a challenge.
"I don't know," she spat, her tone scathing, "I don't know you! I surrendered for the sake of my friends!"
His hand came towards her and she prepared herself for a slap. Instead his touch was gentle, his thumb touching her lips.
"Don't," she warned and pushed his hand away, her eyes blazing, "You won't trick me."
"I don't want to hurt you," he declared, his voice steady, "You've had enough pain and fear. That is over. Now and forever."
"How can I believe that?" she asked, her stomach churning, "When the evidence is clear. The death and destruction you caused. Do you really think you can just brush that aside? You killed those men, our brothers. How can I forgive you for that? Ever."
"No, I can't erase the past," he agreed and sighed, "All I can do is move forward. Create a future."
"What if I refuse?" her query was blunt, her tone flat, "What will you do?"
His thumb rubbed soothing circles over her cheek, the energy a comforting swirl. The smell of vanilla and oranges wafted.
"You won't," his assertion was confident and he cupped her face, his forehead pressed against hers, "Your friends are safe and free. There is no more fighting, no more running. We will be the advisors to the new Emperor. Help create a new world."
"So, I have no choice," her observation was sour and her fists clenched, "Damn, you, Ido."
"Actually, you have a choice," he corrected, his fingers massaging her cheek, "You can say no. You will stay in the Dragoneye Hall but you won't be harmed. I will take your thoughts into consideration when I have meetings with the Emperor."
"You can't guarantee that," she accused, her nose scrunching.
"I can and I will," his reply was fierce and he was a hairs breadth away, his intent clear, "You have my word, Eona. Never will I let another lay a hand on you. Nor will I force myself upon you."
"I'm your enemy," her voice was strained and her eyes widened.
"You are the only one," his answer was honest, his breath hot, "Who will help bring balance. Who will be the mirror that guides me. Who is worthy of being the most powerful Dragoneye."
"Bastard," her curse was a low moan and she gripped his arm, her nails digging, "Stop it."
"Stop what, my darling?" his retort was smooth and he eased back, his expression neutral, "I'm merely telling the truth. I'll leave if you want me to."
"Leave?" the question was a squeak, her eyes snapping open.
"Yes," he confirmed and stood, his hands relaxing, "If you need space, I will leave. All I ask is that you consider my proposal."
"Wh-what about the dragons," her attempt was a distraction and she swallowed.
"They are content," his explanation was simple, his lips curling, "With us, the Hau and the energy, they will recover. They won't die, Eona. We'll ensure that."
"But I-"
"You've done enough, Eona," his words were a reprimand and his eyes were narrowed, his Hau a pulse, "Stop blaming yourself."
Her breath hitched and her Hau pulsed in response to his. His power was a caress, an embrace.
"Stay, Eona," his appeal was tender, his tone beseeching, "Allow me the chance to convince you. Let me show you the future. Will you give me a chance?"
"Okay," she murmured and bit her lip.
"Good, now, how about some lunch?" his query was mild and he grinned.

...
She looked at the crowd and waved. Smiles and cheers greeted her, the people joyous. Today was a celebration, the day that marked a year since her surrender to Ido.
A year ago, her world was dark and her hope was lost. A year ago, her Master had been murdered and she had no one. A year ago, she had chosen the path and had made a vow.
Now, there was happiness and a sense of peace. The land was green and the harvest was bountiful. Her people had been cared for and her country was flourishing.
"Lord Rat and Lady Mirror, we welcome you," the leader said, his bow deep.
"Thank you, good man," her response was polite, her lips curved, "Please, share in the bounty and celebrate."
"My pleasure, thank you, My Lady," his agreement was fast, his feet shuffling, "And thank you for coming today."
"Always," her promise was sincere and she stepped back.
People began to approach, their hands extending. Each wanted to thank them, the gratitude evident. Ido's gaze flickered and he touched her elbow.
"Are you alright, my love?" his concern was evident and his fingers tightened.
"I'm fine, Ido," her assurance was a whisper and she squeezed his arm, "We need to keep going."
He didn't argue, instead nodding. He was always there, her husband. A rock, a foundation. Always.
They walked down the streets, the path littered with flowers. The crowds grew and the music was a cacophony of sound.
"Lord Ido, Lady Eona," a woman called and rushed over, "Thank you."
"It is our honor," Eona's response was practiced and her hand went out, "Enjoy the festival, good people."
"Thank you," the woman repeated and left, her children smiling and laughing.
The couple kept moving, the energy swirling. The Rat Dragon's power was a balm and a comfort. It was the reason the two had come. To remind the people and the land that their Dragons were here.
"Almost done," his observation was quiet, his stride never faltering.
"Indeed," her agreement was quick and her steps matched his, "One more stop, then home."
"I like the sound of that," his voice was a purr and his gaze met hers, his intention clear.
"Patience, Ido," her admonishment was stern and she pursed her lips, her cheeks warm, "Remember, we have responsibilities."
The two Dragoneyes had become close over the last year. At first, the relationship was awkward, her distrust a wall between them. Gradually, however, the ice had thawed.
They were friends. For months thats all they were, both enjoying each others company. But one night had changed everything.
He had saved her life and his touch had awakened her. Her emotions had surged and the realization was instant. She loved him.
After their union, the connection between the pair had strengthened. Their energies had melded, their souls entwined.
"Lady Dragoneye," the cry broke her reverie and her eyes found the group of women.
"Hello," her greeting was a laugh, her head dipping.
"Thank you," the woman closest to her said and smiled, her stomach round.
"Our thanks as well," the other ladies chorused.
"We are grateful, good ladies," Ido interjected, his hand covering Eona's, "Please, enjoy the celebrations."
The group giggled and blushed. The women were pretty, their faces flush. Eona ignored the pang, the image of Ryko and Dela flashing.
"Come, Ido," she prompted and tugged, her heart clenching, "Let's go."
"As you wish, love," he acceded and the two moved on, his hold secure, "We will go home after we talk to the farmers. Just a few more stops and the people will be happy."
"For now," her sigh was audible and she shook her head.
"For the foreseeable future," his response was emphatic and his gaze met hers, his brow arching, "Until the next time."
His hand came up to touch her cheek and she leaned into it. The warmth seeped through her skin and a spark jumped from his palm.
"Yes, the next time," her agreement was quiet and her mind flashed.
It wouldn't be long until their presence was needed again. In a matter of months, they would make the journey to the other cities and towns.
The Dragons needed to be reminded of their strength, the power flowing. It was necessary, an obligation.
"Then tonight, my wife, I will love you," his pledge was a growl and he nuzzled her ear, his energy a rush.
"As you will, my husband," her murmur was throaty and her hand clutched his clothes, "I will love you in return."
"Until the end, beloved," his oath was fervent and he pulled her into a side alley, his hands cradling her face, "My life is yours."
"Always," her whisper was fierce and her arms slid around his neck, her lips brushing his, "Now and forever."
They kissed and the world fell away. His taste was sweet, the smell of vanilla and oranges surrounding her. Her body melted and her knees buckled.
"We will continue this at home, love," he chuckled and held her, his arms supporting, "Come, the sooner we're done, the faster we'll finish."
