Chapter 1: Alone Is A Cold Feeling
Summary:
Macaque has to experience life through the wonderful way known as ‘pure crisis mode’. At least he won’t have to go through it all alone.

Chapter Text
Maybe he deserves this, maybe this was what he was meant to get. Macaque would never admit that, but maybe that was the truth. Maybe he was meant to wallow in his own self pity with nothing to his name. Maybe he was meant to die and stay dead. Maybe the cold chains weren’t meant to grab him and instead someone else. Maybe he was meant to disappear into the void of no one knowing him.
But he couldn’t.
Not when he was supposed to be plotting out some super evil plan against Wukong, like all others who were hurt by the Great Sage. Macaque was meant to be planning away to bring the sage to his knees and make him beg for mercy. Like everyone else.
But he couldn’t bring himself to. Macaque was tired. Tired of fighting, of healing, of relearning and revealing. He was especially tired of being in the shadows. A weak mirror of the one who hurt him. God, he was pathetic wasn’t he? If Peng was here they’d make fun of him for even acting this way. For feeling and acting weak. For being unable to even fight. Unable to be great enough to be loved.
Great enough to be wanted by something warmer than a hard slap or blood leaving the body too fast. Great enough to have a warm embrace. And he was not that.
So he wander. Macaque wandered the streets for what felt like days but could’ve only been a few hours. He wandered and did what he did best, he stuck to the shadows. He weaved through the shadows slowly, with no real purpose of where he was going. Macaque wandered and wandered until he came across an abandoned dojo. It wasn’t large per say, but it was big enough. Big enough to be a home .
The gods only know how much he wishes to have a home. A place he could come back to so that he can rest. A place with someone else, to comfort and hold when it became far too cold.
But that would be in the future. For now, all he had was himself. For now, he was his own home. For now, he was his own comfort. For now, he would have to hold himself. For now, he would have to be his own warmth. Macaque yearns for the future, the future where he was not alone. The future where the silence wouldn’t be the thing to kill him.
Oh how Macaque wishes for that future to come soon. Oh he wishes to no longer be alone. Oh how he wishes to have someone else’s warmth there to warm his so so cold heart.
ᡣ𐭩 ᰔ ᡣ𐭩 ᰔ ᡣ𐭩 ᰔ ᡣ𐭩 ᰔ ᡣ𐭩
Macaque had barely been staying there for a month when he came across something strange.
The day started ordinary, he had just left the small noodle shop he came to occasionally because of how cheap it was. Macaque had just started his way home when he saw a small child covered in dirt shivering next to the trash cans. While before he would’ve left the child to fend for their self, but the loneliness was biting at him.
The loneliness was killing him. Practically drowning him in his own sorrows. It was trying to consume him whole and spit him back out in pieces. Macaque was alone. And so was the child. The child was like him. So how could he be so selfish in not help someone like him. Someone too young to even understand what was happening. Someone he could relate to. Someone like him. Alone, cold and without a true home.
So Macaque went home no longer alone. Now, he had someone. Someone to hold. Someone to comfort. Someone to ground him. Someone to make it that he had a home .
ᡣ𐭩 ᰔ ᡣ𐭩 ᰔ ᡣ𐭩 ᰔ ᡣ𐭩 ᰔ ᡣ𐭩
The child, who he referred to as ‘mini kid’ or MK, for how small he was, had been staying with him for the pass four days. Far too nervous about everything. Macaque never felt more like a monster then he did now.
Then MK spoke to him for the first time.
“Why are you kind to me?”
His voice was soft and quiet. Like he was scared of how Macaque would react. And he probably was. The boy curled in on himself, making him look even smaller. Macaque couldn’t ever dare hurt such a small creature. So small and little, it would be a crime. The warmth to his dead, cold heart, he’d never dream of hurting MK. Such a fragile heart, he was. And only for the small little creature he claimed as his own.
“Because you needed it.” Macaque kneeled into of the boy, a gently smile growing on his lips. And neither made a move for a moment. The world was still. The only sounds being made where their breaths.
Then the boy wrapped his small fragile arms around him, and Macaque knew now he could never let go. MK weeped as he hugged himself closer to the only adult to be kind to him. He weeped and weeped til no more tears could fall. He practically used all his strength to hold on close, too afraid to lose the warmth he had been given. His tears turned to sobs and his cries to wails. MK shoved his little body into Macaque’s chest. And the monkey let him.
Macaque held him as gentle as his monstrous hands could. He was a monster, yet this child held him as if he was innocent. This child treated him kind. This child didn’t know the horrors he’s seen and caused.
His child was innocent. His child was kind. His child was no monster. His child was what he wished he was. And he couldn’t be anymore proud. Though he’s only known his child for four days, he knew he was his. MK was his. Not by blood, not by law, but by the way he knew. He knew this child was his. Macaque knew this child was his because this child was him but better. And for that, he was so so proud. He was so proud of this boy, this child, this innocent little angel who was just so fragile.
And to think he almost hesitated when bring him home. MK was his greatest decision. One he’ll never regret.

Chapter Text
Something was wrong. Sun Wukong wasn’t sure what was wrong but something was wrong. There was just a digging feeling of needing to run somewhere. To protect something. So that’s why he knew something was wrong.
Or maybe not. But something big was going to happen today, he knew that at least. The feeling of wrongness was gnawing at his gut, almost threatening to eat him alive. The need to run somewhere. To be somewhere. Wukong wasn’t sure where he needed to be, but he really needed to be there. The feeling felt dreadful, draining even.
And he couldn’t understand why, the world was quiet. Calm and relaxing as the days could get. Peaceful even. It was a good day for lazing around and doing nothing. It was a good day.
But the feeling didn’t go away. No matter what Wukong did to distract himself from the feeling of wrong , the feeling felt as if it became worse and worse. The gnawing sensation started to feel more like biting, almost urging him. Demanding him to listen to it. And maybe that was crazy to think. Maybe he was finally going insane.
Then the feeling started to feel more like a headache. He did not need have those memories resurfacing today. So Wukong followed the feeling. He followed it all the way to the top of the mountain. Or well, almost to the top.
Memories started to come back and seriously, he was dealing with enough just today. Before he could turn back, there was a rumble. Then there was a rumble before it felt as if the ground was trying to rip itself open. Wukong knew it was too peaceful today. And the feeling was back. Ugh. He practically sprinted up the small amount of mountain left. Gods, was he not ready for what was up there.
Now in retrospect, Wukong has seen many a things, but. He’s never seen the birth of a stone egg. Of course, he was born from one but that was a couple millennials ago. So when he finds a stone egg, right where his own used to be, well he isn’t sure what to do.
He’s not ready to be a dad! Wukong could barely take care of himself on a good day! And there was also the fact that this is indeed, a stone monkey. Which, if his own life is anything to go off of, this child would be difficult to take care of. Like regular baby monkeys aren’t hard enough, this one would be mystical. Aka magical. There’s also the fact that it seems like this egg was formed from his own he..kinda never cleaned up. So They might be related.
Oh gods, what if they are related!? That makes the situation like a thousand times worse. Especially since Wukong was the worst person ever when he was younger. What if this kid was just like him? What if this kid was worse ?!
His spiraling was cut short by the fact that the egg cracking was actually tearing the mountain apart. Since Wukong wasn’t actually sure what he was supposed to do, he wrapped his body around the egg. He held on tight, muttering curses to all the gods he didn’t like or had wrong him. This seemed to calm whatever was happening to the mountain but the egg continued to try and break open. The egg continued to hit against him, almost brutally. But he held on, if only for his subjects. No matter how much it was actually starting to hurt.
Then there was a bright flash that blinded him for a moment. Then there was darkness. Then it seemed like everything had gone back to normal. From where it had blasted him, he could see the wreckage of where the egg was, which now had a small monkey. And they were adorable.
Well, was adorable. The little monkey cried out and it was like a sonic boom. Every small wail left a dent in the mountain, almost threatening to tear the mountain apart. Again . Seeing as holding them while they were in the egg, Wukong reached out and gently held the infant in his arms. The kid calmed down after a moment, staring up at him with wide eyes. Little hands reached up to touch his face, and Wukong was weak to it. He now realised what baby fever was.
Wukong cooed at the little monkey, watching them with such joy. The infant might not even be related to him, but they were his now. The little monkey was as cute, if not more than the other baby monkeys on the mountain. Their little hands tried to familiarize with his face, pulling at the fur there. The calmness almost made Wukong forget what happened just moments ago.
Then the kid sneezed and well. The kid wasn’t there anymore. Almost like they somehow teleported. Since the little monkey was no longer in his arms, Wukong remembered the disaster their birth caused. So he probably should look for them, shouldn’t he? Hopefully the little one didn’t get too far. Hopefully.
Notes:
Wukong: Weird feeling that makes him, an immortal who has never gotten sick, feel sick
Also Wukong: Eh, probably not important.

Chapter Text
Something was wrong. That much was obvious. But what was wrong, Macaque wasn’t sure. Maybe it was the way the air felt more frightening nowadays. Or maybe it was the fact that something was bothering his kid and he didn’t know how to help.
MK was clearly struggling with something, and he hated the fact that his kid didn’t feel safe enough to tell what it was. No matter how much MK thought he didn’t notice the little details, he did. Macaque especially noticed how quiet his bubbly little energetic chaos-maker had become. Macaque especially noticed how he flinched more. The slightest raise of a voice or even a hand, not that he would hit him, MK would flinch. And he would flinch hard. His body moving away or jerking back harshly.
Why was this happening? Macaque wasn’t sure. He had some theories, such as a rude teacher or a bad friend but none of those seem too likely. MK would’ve told him about something like that. Right? His kid trusts him, right?
So it seems like the only way to figure out what was happening was to ask. Right? But what if that made it worse? Macaque was still getting used to this whole parent thing, and yeah, he might be a bit over paranoid- But! Macaque himself wasn’t normal so that already was a risk to his kid. Especially with all the enemies he made back in the day. But no one in their right mind would attack a kid to get back at their parents. Right? He just has to suck it up and talk with the kid.
Macaque wanders around the dojo looking for MK, looking at the places he usually hides. He walks as calmly as he could, looking under tables and chairs. After he checked the dojo and outside twice, he went up to the roof. Fond memories were created there. And fond memories will always be connected to it.
He climbs the ladder as quick as he could, wanting this search to be over with. Macaque wants nothing more than to cuddle up with his kid. Once he reaches the top, he finds MK sitting up there with a blanket wrapped around himself tightly like he was freezing. Which made no sense seeing as it was still afternoon and still quite warm. But upon looking closer, he realised that the kid really did look like he was freezing. He was pale in the face, shivering more than someone should with the sun glaring on them. And that was what made him want to worry even more.
“Kid?” he calls out softly, afraid of spooking him. MK’s head shifts to look at him and Macaque takes that as confirmation to crouch next to him. “You doing alright, bud?” he questions, keeping his voice light.
MK stares at him blankly for a moment before muttering out a soft, “Cold...” a frown spreads across Macaque’s face, he presses the back of his hand against his kid’s forehead. Which, yeah, he was freezing. It doesn’t make much sense because if he was sick he should be heating up, not freezing. Unless..
No. She wouldn’t do that to a kid, right? No, she totally would. She was a bitch and the worst one at that. He guesses he must’ve made a face because MK looked concerned. “Dad? Is something happening to me?” and if that little voice didn’t melt his cold heart, nothing else could ever.
“Don’t worry bud, I’ll figure it out,” he ruffles the kid’s hair, frowning again when he doesn’t even react to it. Sighing, Macaque gently rubs his shoulder, pulling him to stand up. “Let’s head inside, okay?” he asks softly, scared anything louder would ruin the moment.
MK makes a sound of agreement, walking in step with his father. He leans heavily on him, slowly drifting to sleep. Macaque hums softly as he picks his son off the ground, holding him in his arms. Is he afraid? Of course he is! What parent wouldn’t be? Is he able to do anything? Maybe not, but that doesn’t mean he won’t try!
Macaque may not have known this kid for long, but he cares a lot about this kid. So, if there’s anything in his power that he can do to help, you better fucking believe he’s going to try. Even if he had to get his hands dirty. There’s nothing he won’t do for his kid. Not even death would hold him back.
★ ★ ★
Once he places MK down on his bed, the kid curls up under three blankets. Macaque should probably get more blankets, seeing as she’s trying to freeze him from the inside out. But they don’t own much more, probably one or two others somewhere. Gods, he never wanted his kid to be involved with his past. He never wanted her to even know about his kid. Because he was supposed to trick her and defeat her. Right?
Now, in retrospect, what was he supposed to do? He doesn't know where she is or where her little minion are hiding. And even if he did, what was he supposed to do? Macaque’s already weakened from the fact that he was, y’know, revived. He’s also pretty sure that she somehow took some of his powers. So, not fun. And no plan.
But his kid is suffering now, so he doesn’t have time to just sit and whine. If he’s got no permanent solution for now then he’s just gotta get a temporary one. Like thicker clothes and heating and maybe even more warm foods instead of just a bunch of different ways to make sandwiches. Maybe even fix up the kitchen probably so he can use it probably. Or maybe install a fireplace.
But those things cost money. Which he most certainly does not have. Because who would hire an ex-criminal who attempted to kill the Sun Wukong? That’s right, no one. Unless he stole money. Wouldn’t be too bad to add theft to his criminal record.
Or he could lie about who he is and try to get one of those really sketchy jobs that don’t do background checks. Or fake documents and get a really good job that pays a lot. But even then, who’s to say he gets the job? Or even keep it long enough to pay for shit? And who’s going to take care of his kid?
Because that’s why he’s working. So his kid can be alright. But Macaque doubts that any employer would just let a kid roam around while he worked. And getting someone to look after his kid means he would probably have to pay that which just adds to the expenses. Plus he would have to spend time looking for said person AND do background checks to make sure they can be trusted alone with his kid.
Gods, who knew being a parent was this hard? Like seriously, could no one give him a warning first? Not that he wouldn’t still have adopted MK but a warning would’ve been nice. Maybe he should've listened to what Pigsy was saying. Huh. Maybe he should go visit some time. For food.

Chapter Text
MK’s been getting…better. He wouldn’t say that he’s back to normal but he is better than before. The only one Macaque has to thank is Pigsy. Bless his heart for paying for all the doctor visits and heaters in his dojo because Macaque only makes so much at the theatre. Especially with how much anything costs, he doubts that he could’ve done anything without Pigsy’s help.
And since MK’s getting better, he wants to leave the house more. Visit Pigsy and Tang for food or to hang out with Mei for hours. But most importantly, he’s smiling again. Which, to Macaque, couldn’t be any less precious than diamonds. Seriously, who knew how much your kid’s mental state affects yours? Just seeing his son happy makes everything feel worthwhile.
Even if it’s snow. Even if it’s getting chilly out and he wants to curl up and cry because his kid just got better from Lady Fuckface. But the seasons don’t wait for anybody. And it’s fine. He’s totally fine. He’s totally not freaking out at all. He’s okay because MK loves the snow and wants to play in it and it makes him smile and- Macaque hates it.
Not the fact that MK’s happy but snow. The cold. The way it seeps under his fur to his skin and reminds him of the last time it was this cold. The last time his skin was frozen. The last time, when he couldn’t even move his body. The last time, when he couldn’t even breathe. The last time, when death finally claimed him and he froze for years.
But that’s not now. Now his lungs open and close normally, letting his heart pump. Now he could feel things other than the cold and the bone deep wariness. Now he can feel warmth and rain and leaves and dirt and just- shit. Now he’s alive. Now he’s moving on with the past and he’s grown. Grown so much he has a kid.
And some days it doesn’t feel real. Some days he wakes up accepting the ground to swallow him whole and show it was all just a dream. But it is. It is so real because he sees the light of the sun fall on MK’s bed before he wakes up. He can smell the flowers MK insists on collecting while on walks. He can hear MK’s heartbeat and know he’s okay. He can touch MK’s pulse and know his heart is beating and it’s not a trick on his ears.
It’s so grounding to know that his kid’s okay. That he’s done a good job. It’s so rewarding to Macaque to see MK flourish and grow better than he did. It’s just so amazing to have his kid grow in a better environment than what he had. And it’s not a trick. It’s not a dream. It’s real. It’s so real he wants to cry.
And it’s so-
…
Did someone just hit him with a snowball? Did he really get so lost in his thoughts he didn’t even realise it was coming for him? Great Sage, that’s so embarrassing. And- Another one is thrown at him while he wallows in his embarrassment. Which is like. Worst.
“You back with us, broody?” Pigsy asks, looking ready to throw another. Macaque attempts to glare at him but he just laughs. Like those stereotypical dad laughs that sound heart and full of love. Huh.
Macaque sighs, standing up from his perch on the windowsill. He stretches before using his shadows to throw multiple snowballs back at him. “Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up.” he rolls his eyes fondly because he can’t be mad at Pigsy. Though he’ll say the opposite at gunpoint. He looks around before asking, “Where’s MK?”
And he really should have expected this. Because he is then attacked from behind. From the tiniest hands that are trying their hardest to cover his eyes but they’re fidgeting too much. “Seems like you found him,” which is followed by Pigsy’s comforting laugh. This was planned, wasn’t it?
“Oh no! I have been bested!” He calls out dramatically before fake falling. MK sits up on his shoulders triumphantly which is soon followed by another small body using him as a carpet from the snow. Which. Yuck. He completely forgot that it was snowing. “Alright, you guys win. Can I get up from the snow now?” he attempts to bargain.
His answer is two twin shouts of “No!” followed by two (older voices) laughing. Which means Tang has decided to join them. Lovely, even more people to witness his defeat. By primary students. Not the worst thing seeing as it’s his son and his best friend who he treats like a sister.
“Aw, but guys it’s cold!” Macaque attempts to argue, despite knowing it’s a losing battle. MK on his own is a chaos gremlin that could rival Sun Wukong. MK and Mei together? Absolute destruction. No survivors. “You wouldn’t let me freeze, would you?” Pleading for mercy is his last option. Seriously.
“Yup!” Mei answers with such a happy lite to her voice it makes him wonder if she’s evil. Maybe he shouldn’t let MK around her so much. But that probably won’t stop them from finding ways to meet elsewhere. “Burn- uh I mean, freeze!” she stumbles over her words for a moment. MK laughs at her but she whacks him in the back of the head.
“Alright, cool it.” Gods bless Pigsy. He lifts the both of them up by the back of their shirts and off of him, allowing Macaque to return to the warmth inside the noodle shop. “No hitting, remember?” He gently reminds the children as they both nod. Gods know how he gets both of them to listen to him.
“Are we gonna build snowmen?” MK asks innocently. What an act. MK really is his kid, isn’t he? Huh. “Cause I really wanna.” he pleads, puppy eyes and all. No man is strong enough to say no to those.
“You can go ahead, bud,” Macaque says from the doorway. Does he love his kid? Yes. Does he like snow? Hell to the fucking no. Is he going to build snowmen with his kid? Only if he was a stronger man. But MK and Mei look at him with those fake sad eyes and- Fuck. He can pretend to be a stronger man, right?
Yeah. He can do anything for his kid. For his family. If Pigsy thinks of him that way.

Chapter Text
MK likes to think he’s pretty smart for his age. He might not be at the top of his class or skipping grades or anything like that but he’s survived the horrors of his childhood mostly untraumatized. Mostly. Besides, it’s not like he’s failing. Just not doing great enough to have the teacher get off his back about being a troubled kid. Like seriously! Just because he failed a science test but get the best grade like ever for history doesn’t make him troubled!
Okay, that’s probably not why they think he’s trouble. It’s the inability to stay still or pay attention when he doesn’t like the subject and most definitely the fact they think he’s got a bad home life or something. Which nuh uh! His dad is the best of the best, 10/10 parenting with a side of totally cool! They’re just looking for something to blame instead of y’know, helping him? Like they’re supposed to do cause it’s literally their job?
But whatever with teachers and school, today was going by Mei and he was going to have the best day ever. ‘Cause Mei is super cool and has a super cool house with super cool games. And when they hang out, playing games or studying or whatever else they feel like doing, Mei’s freaking butler brings them super cool snacks and drinks. So, yeah, going over to Mei’s is the best. Especially since he finally saved enough chore money to get the Monkey Combat 2.
But, first, he has to deal with teachers. Because whatever god up above hates him having a good day. So, he gets called to stay behind, having to do the fake shy act of not knowing why even though he does know why. Because it’s always the same reason. Every. Single. Time.
Mrs. Molly, aka the worst teacher in the whole world, does the thing where they lean forward to make themself seem more friendly but it's honestly just pasternising. She’s got a soft smile and it just feels so fake. Even though he looks at it and only sees truth.“Hi buddy-“ Only Pigsy gets to call him that. “I know school can be hard-“ Liar. You just care about how it looks on your record. “but if something’s bothering you, you can tell me.” Can he? “I just want you to feel comfortable.” And that’s how they always say it. So no, he does not feel comforted.
MK forces himself not to huff cause it’s what they say every time. Same script, same movements, same plastic smile that’s just too friendly. It’s an act at most and caring at least. “If there’s anything I can do, maybe slow down the class or have you transferred to the Special Ed class-“ there it is. Just pass him along cause it’s too much work to try.
And maybe he lashed out, maybe he didn’t, but he’s outside the classroom with tear stains. Not like it’s the first time but it never gets better. MK wipes at his face with his hands, which honestly just feels eeugh. He wipes it off on his pants, walking out the school to meet Mei. No matter how bad today gets, at least there’s Mei.
The moment he leaves the school building entirely, she’s waiting right outside for him. Like always ‘cause they’re besties and stuff so they make sure the other is okay or whatever. He notices her first, a small smile forming on his face at the one on hers. Mei’s smile falters for a moment at the sight of his probably tear-streaked face, but it’s back just as quick. MK meets her at the gate, exiting the premises together to walk to wherever her driver’s parked.
“Hey,” MK feels Mei bump his shoulder, like she always does when he’s upset. “Get into a fight with the teacher again?” she’s teasing but there’s still that underlying feeling of concern. Because she always has to be concerned about him. Which just sucks.
“Something like that.” He tries to shrug off, like he always does when he’s upset. Both of them hang on to the words like it’s the Word of God, cause that’s who they are. Just two troubled kids against the world. Mei laughs like it’s the funniest thing ever. ‘Cause she gets it. She gets the constant bothering of teachers with fake plastic smiles and pretend feelings of concern.
“So~ you got the thing?” she asks, changing the subject with eased practice. Her eyes twinkle in the way that he knows means that they won’t be getting any work done. At least not until they rush to finish it before MK is leaving.
His face brightens as well, catching on quickly. A teasing grin quickly spreads across his face, “Well of course I do, you plebeian!” Mei gasps at his wording, laughing as she punches him in the arm. “It’s true! I’m obviously the cooler one in this friendship.” he states with pride but they both know he’s joking.
She pushes him away, laughing even louder at the predicament. Mei pauses for a moment before grinning and running. “Race ya there!” she calls out from her unfair head start. MK stutters for a moment before running to catch up with her.
★
Because he’s super smart and totally right all the time, hanging out with Mei is the best. Like there’s not a single thing MK could think of that’s better than hanging with his best friend who is practically his sister. You could give him all the money in the world, all the ways to cure his condition and buy him every Monkey King merch but nothing compares to the feeling of having someone that just understands him like Mei does. Sitting in silence or speaking so loud Pigsy tells them to pipe down before they scare customers. It’s Mei that makes it all worthwhile.
Especially when it comes to beating her in video games. The moment they got their snacks set up, they drew up a leaderboard. And won’t you guess who’s in the lead. While 9-7 might not be the most impressive for a game that can turn either way so quickly but it matters because he’s beating Mei. Plus, it’s not even because she’s pitying him! MK’s just getting better.
Does he know what he’s doing? Not really. MK’s style consists of button mashing and playing over the one powerful move he knows. It’s probably because of the randomness that he’s in the lead. It’s the final stretch and either of them can win. Monkey King (because there isn’t any other character cool enough) is three hits away from death and the Demon Bull King (because Mei swears that there was a new buff added for him,) is just two away. It’s a truly epic battle as MK cheers, finally landing a final blow to Mei’s character.
“Oh come on! You’re totally cheating!” said person exclaims, throwing her hands up in frustration. Let it be known that you do not want an actually upset and frustrated Mei. She is a vicious force who is not to be reckoned with.
But MK never said he was smart, so he continues his teasing. He sticks his tongue out at her, making a mocking face. “Nuh uh! You’re just upset you lost!” he argues back with a knowing grin.
Mei huffs and puffs before deciding that she wants to sulk instead of talking. She turns her back towards him, pouting as she looks at the wall. She wraps her arms around her legs, jutting out her lip in a way he knows is fake. This is all because Mei has decided that his dad being an actor means she has to learn to be one too. Which also means MK got roped up into these classes and has learned to tell people’s masks.
MK huffs in an attempt to match her energy. And it’s working ‘cause he sees the way her mouth twitches to a smile. “Oh come on! It wants even-“ the sound of crashing stops him from completing his sentence. Both of them pause because none of the workers ever come around here unless Mei or her parents called them here.
Their eyes meet and nod to confirm what they must do. MK grabs the baseball bat Mei bought as a joke and Mei grabs the play gun she’d been trying to build. “Intruder?” he asked quietly while raising an eyebrow, knowing that it has to be the case.
“How?” her voice cracks at the end but she covers it with a quiet cough. Mei’s eyes search her room in case there’s something else she’s missing. She seems nervous which, duh, someone actually broke into her super high tech house. If someone broke into the dojo, he’d freak out! But this is Mei, his rock, the one who calms him down. So he’s going to return the favour.
“Wait here, I’ll check first.” he says with a strong voice ‘cause the last thing they both need is MK having a panic attack. Mei reaches a hand out in a ‘don’t do it’ but he sends her a look to convey that ‘it’s okay. I’ve got this.’ She hesitates for a moment longer before nodding.
MK peeks his head past the door, waiting to see if there’s anyone. Once he’s sure there isn’t anyone, he sneaks into the hallway. He can just feel the way Mei lingers at the door to watch out for him. But it’s fine. He’s got this. Totally. Super duper got this.
He shakes off the nerves as he continues to sneak his way through Mei’s house. MK hears as she joins him, if only at a slight difference ‘cause of course. They got each other’s backs. As he starts to hear a voice, he lifts the baseball bat higher, ready to strike if needed. There is a chance this is a big misunderstanding but still! Gotta be sure if you don’t wanna die.
“Yo! Dragon, that you?” the mystery voice calls out, his back facing MK. His grip tightens as he inches closer, muscles coiling as he gets closer. “I’ll replace this if it upsets you or whatever-“
Thonk!
It’s either MK is really weak and all the power he put into that swing was for nothing or this guy’s made of steel. He’s not sure which one is more terrifying. Both. Is both an option because he’s started to shake with fear. “You could’ve just said something instead of hitting me!” the voice yells out as he turns to face him and..
“Monkey King?!” he yells out before his brain catches up. MK drops the bat out of his hand as he covers his mouth with his hand.
“A child!?” The Monkey King yells back to him as he gets a good look at MK. He drops the pieces of porcelain he had in his hands. Almost as shocked as MK is.
Mei comes running from the corner because of the commotion only to add to the noise with a loud, “Food stealer!?” She points at Monkey King accusingly, waiting for him to say not.
“Dragon child!?” he points back at her as if she isn’t supposed to be there. The Monkey King stutters before pointing with both hands at MK. “What are you doing with the little monkey?!” Wait what-
“Kids! I heard screaming and-“ Dad chooses that exact moment to run through the door before pausing once he sees the Monkey King. He glares hard, like the way he does when someone insults MK, baring his teeth at the Monkey King. “You.” he spits out with so much venom, MK shivers at the thought of it being directed at him.
“You!?” Monkey King says back flabbergasted. Like he saw a ghost. His face runs through a thousand emotions as if reliving every moment he’s ever had with someone and- what. He reaches out a hand only for Dad to act like he was going to bite it. Great sage.
Can any day be normal!?
Notes:
MK going to knock out the intruder:
Intruder turns around:
MK: MONKEY KING?!
Sun Wukong: MONKEY CHILD?!
Mei: FRIDGE RACCON!?
Sun Wukong: Dragon child???
Macaque: You.
Sun Wukong: Me????

Chapter 6: I thought I’d never see the sun again
Summary:
Unlike Queen’s hit song, Macaque is not having a good time, having a good time. Is very ready to throw hands with Sun Wukong if he doesn’t get away from his kid. If he touches a hair on his head he’ll- Yeah. The Wukong hate is very large.

Chapter Text
Macaque stares at what should’ve been a hallucination. He stares and stares at the monster that haunts his nightmares and plagues his dreams. He can’t look away, limbs locked in place as pure, unadulterated rage fills him ‘til he feels like it might even leak out. Macaque’s gaze is fixed on Sun Wukong like a predator to a prey ready to pounce upon it. He can’t give in. No matter the pull to.
But there’s something ugly unfurling in his chest. Some type of ugly that wants to maul and claw its way out. Some type of ugly that makes him want to lose his humanity, to become with the monster and become something ugly. To tear limbs from limbs and bones from skin. And while usually he’d give into the feeling, the pleasure of being something more, there’s children around.
Shit- His children are around!
“Get away from them, you fuckward!” he practically screams, pulling his kids and his friend away from the true monster. Macaque can afford to lose his eye permanently, maybe even his life again, but he can’t afford to lose them. Because unlike all the monsters around them, they haven’t been affected.
Macaque wraps his arms around them protectively, saving, maybe even a little bit of hiding them away from Wukong. MK, bless his heart and hope to protect it, mumbles a small, “Dad, language!” but doesn’t otherwise protest the manhandling. Most likely because he’s too used to his random busts of terror. Too used to him being afraid of something finally ruining his peace and taking everything away. Macaque can’t lose again. He’s got too much to lose this time.
Mei wiggles a bit but mostly in a way of getting comfortable rather than discomfort. He’d know, babysitting the two of them should count as a second job. She moves and pushes until his arm is just loosely in front of her chest and her arms are wrapped around his. They both look exasperated with him, like he was ruining something sacred instead of saving them from the demon in front of them. Which, right. These are children who don’t know the real Sun Wukong.
Can he even say he does anymore?
“Mihou-” the beast starts, looking ready to plead. The gentle gaze that once filled him with hopeless happiness now makes him want to foam at the mouth. Macaque feels like an animal when his teeth clamp around where the fiend planned to place his fingers.
“Fuck off and find somewhere new, you seem to be good at that,” he spits out as if he were python sinking its teeth into its victims. He doesn’t feel real any more. It’s comforting to feel the warmth of the children’s bodies, their squirming confirm they’re alive.
The swine’s face breaks, as if it was capable of heartbreak. “Mih- Macaque…” the varmint whispers, no longer attempting to reach out. He It looks sad, so very sad that Macaque wants to reach out and comfort it. But not this time. “Can I just talk?”
MK and Mei have decided to inform him, through a series of wiggles and shimmying, that they want to add to this conversation. Like hell he’s letting 14 year olds deal with this little shit. “No. No not in a million years,” he huffs. Macaque changes his grip, holding the kids closer.
“Please M-Macaque. I- I just want to know how you are.” The tyke continues, ignoring the fact that he does not care what he says. Macaque has more important things to do. Like keeping his kids and his friend from doing something dangerous. Such as engaging with the beast.
“No- stop, oh my heavens.” He says exasperated. MK has decided that biting his arm, although not that hard, will get him to release them. Mei has gone for stomping on his foot til it does something. Jokes on both of them, he’s died before. This pain is nothing.
The monstrosity breathes in deeply, looking up as if the heavens would grant him grace. “Mihou just listen! I just want to know what you’re doing with the little monkey!” The ogre tries not to yell but what would it matter. He’s not listening.
Mei, because she must have been raised by savages, bites down on his wrist. “You little shit-” Macaque breathes through his nose, trying to keep his tone little and affectionate. Cause these children are little shits, but they’re his little shits. “Go! Leave from here!” he commands them.
They don’t listen, like always. Even when he pushes them in the opposite direction of the hellion. If anything, they try to move closer to it, pushing against his hands. At this rate, it might just be better to grab them and run. Bunker down at the dojo for a bit and hope the scamp can’t find them. As long as Tang’s story is right about him not having his staff, they’ll be fine.
“If you would just hear me out!” The troll continues on as if this is about him it anymore. The anger in its voice scares him. Not for the fear of being hurt, but the fear that his children and friend are still here.
“Just listen to me for once and leave! Please!” Macaque begs of them. If anything, absolutely anything happened to them, he’d never forgive himself. Pigsy and Tang would never forgive him. “Please…”
“Alright,” the scoundrel agrees with a suspiciously heavy voice. As if it hurts him to agree. “I’ll leave. Just please… Mihou… another time, can we talk?” The goblin nags with his lovely its annoying voice. Even though he didn’t respond, it probably didn’t expect him to, it leaves. Gone with the wind.
“Huh,” Macaque breathes for the first time in a while. He lets them go and the effect is immediate. Both of his little hellions round in him with the most upset faces they can muster. Their little pouts melt his heart because at least they’re still here to pout.
Mei begins with, “What the heck Mr. M! That was literally so lame!” Her brows are furrowed, stare intense enough to burn, but his soul is ash so it doesn’t matter.
MK picks up with, “Yeah dad! That was the Monkey King! Why’d you treat him like that!” His arms are crossed, almost copying Macaque’s own anger pose. His pout is more pronounced simply because he’s more used to using it in his puppy eyes.
It just melts his heart. It doesn’t matter how angry they are with him, they are alive. They are so alive that he can’t care. Not even a single scratch on their little heads. They’re angry because they don’t know, and that’s the best news he’s gotten today. He can’t- He can’t hold back anymore. Macaque wraps both of them in a tight hug, pressing his face into their shoulder blades. “Don’t worry about it, alright?”
And for that moment, the world is calm.
Notes:
Okay okay okay okay!!! I know what you’re going to say!! And hopefully next chapter won’t take too long!!! I have summer and motivation!!! I got this!!!
Chapter 7: Is this a star or are you my eclipse?
Summary:
After all these years, after all the fighting and arguments, Wukong is finally ready to have a civil, proper conversation. Macaque? Not so much. Maybe a kid really would’ve fixed this. Years ago.
Notes:
Edit: Good afternoon?? I love my friends. If you can, go hug your friends for me. Thanks Kiwi for posting this for me<3
Any whose! Last chapter in act 2!! Get ready for act 3, I accidentally made it really sad???

Chapter Text
No matter what anyone might think, MK is much smarter than anyone knows. He’s just learned from his dad and all the adults around him that the only way to live is to let people think what they want about you. So, he pretends he doesn’t notice (The!!!) Monkey King following him around. He pretends he doesn’t notice how hostile dad gets if (THE!!!) Monkey King gets too close.
Ignorance is bliss and all that jazz. Pretend he doesn’t really really wanna talk with (THE?!) Monkey King so dad calms down. As sad as it would be to lose this really cool chance, MK can tell that dad isn’t doing this to be mean. He looks.. scared. Terrified even. Which means it’s up to him, MK, the totally awesome Monkey kid, to keep the peace.
Which would be really easy if (The) Monkey king wasn’t trying so hard. Likes seriously hard.
“M- Macaque, I would appreciate it if you just let me talk!” Monkey King(?!?!) calls out from the locked gate of the theater. Why he thought this would be a good place is a guess to anyone.
“Your mouth is moving and words are coming out, is that not talking?” dad snarks back in a tone he TOTALLY doesn’t copy. Believe him, MK doesn’t copy people, no sirree!
(THE!?) Monkey king growls like a puppy not getting its way. His hands are in fists as he stares at dad as if he’s holding back severe anger. He snaps out, “Not what I meant and you know it!”
MK had the best teacher, his dad, teach him the art of ‘letting people come to their own conclusions’. People get way less pissy with him if he lets them think what they want. Stay quiet and allow them to choose what they think you think. No one can be upset when that’s what they decided about you. You let them go off then correct them when they try to pin it on you.
So you really can’t blame him for using it right back on his dad.
He releases a cold breath, shivering a bit much for the time of year. Really, it is way too chilly today for March. “Cold,” he mutters to himself for at least some semblance of normal.
Dad’s hands are settled in his shoulders, almost guiding him away from Monkey King(!!!). He keeps occasionally looking back as if he’d randomly decide to sneak up on them and snatch MK. There sits a glare, that’s accompanied by a peeved look, on dad’s face. It clashes with the pitiful pout on Monkey King(!?!!)‘s. Maybe it’s because he looks so pitiful that he thinks he can try to sneak a ‘nicer’ conversation in.
It doesn’t work, obviously. There goes MK’s peace.
The walk to Pigsy’s is mostly the same as usual. Other than the argument, which he has learned to just tune out, nothing is out of the ordinary. It’s the same script over and over anyway. ‘Let me talk.’ ‘No, fuck you.’ ‘Ugh you’re being mean.’ blah, blah, blah. It has been 2 weeks, and honestly? MK just doesn’t have the brain power to deal with it. He’d rather do homework than listen to whatever it is they’re saying.
Thankfully, everyone has unanimously agreed to take his approach. As they enter the shop, no one, not even Tang, bats an eye to the two adults. It’s probably because of the full force of ‘no one wants or cares for you to be here’ that shuts the argument down. Monkey King(?!?!!!) tappers off, sitting alone at a corner table like a creep, almost nervously. Spry glances are thrown towards MK anytime he relaxes.
Weirdo.
With MK ‘safely’ deposited into the presence of Pigsy ‘I don’t care who you think you are, I will attack’ and Tang ‘I know the law and I’m not afraid to use it’, dad heads off to work the delivery van. It’s not that dad doesn’t like his job at the theatre or that he needs extra money, but Pigsy’s is basically the family’s business. Even if they aren’t officially family.
Which, who even cares about that! Boring people, that’s who.
MK grabs an uniform shirt and puts it on, buttons open. Again, family business. Pigsy doesn’t care if he wears it properly or not, as long as he does a good job. Take the orders, tell him the orders, hand out the orders, rinse and repeat. Life is easy like that.
Though today is a bit boring. Especially considering that Mei is stuck at home doing whatever rich people do. So he’s stuck here, working without his best friend, with the weirdo(who is actually Monkey King and that would be really cool if he wasn’t being weird), and boring, boring customers. Just a basic, normal work day really.
Maybe he shouldn’t have jinxed himself.
Well to his credit, it starts off normal. Dad is due to take his lunch break and drags MK off with him. He fusses over the opened shirt, cuz he’s a dad, and makes sure he takes a good amount of food because he’s a worry wart. It’s all calm and peaceful so maybe that’s why Monkey King decided to ruin it.
“Even if you don’t take me back at least-”
Silence. Pure, unadulterated silence. With just one statement. Monkey King somehow managed to silence all noise and cause more at the same time. There’s a quick “What?!” from Tang before everyone else goes abruptly into chaos.
“Holy- does that make Monkey King my other dad-?!” is the only thing that makes it out of MK’s mouth after that revelation. It only makes sense! The weird way Monkey King keeps trying to talk to him when dad’s not there, the constant glances… Oh great sage, MK is a child of divorce?!
There’s a sea of clashing voices. Cries of ‘no!’ ‘yes!’, ‘not how it works’, and one very notable ‘you’re adopted and you know this.’ quell his thoughts before they can really run. Even with that said, he does have to pause and think about the implications of his dad and Monkey King being together and him being adopted.
“Oh yeah, I’m adopted. Heh.” he snickers, grinning at the faces of the adults around him. They should be thankful there are literally only two other people in the shop right now. It would’ve been crazy otherwise.
Dad is back to glaring at Monkey King and Pigsy’s joined in. Probably because now instead of just being a weirdo and/or ex friend of dad, he is now identified as an ex. An ex that things ended badly for and is now obsessed with getting back with him. The full force of those two glares combined is enough to roast a chicken and Monkey King gets that immediately, running out the store with his tail between his legs.
The chaos of what just happened isn’t completely quelled, but it is at least somewhat calmed. There’s a period of silence in which no one, not even the two random customers speak. It, of course, doesn’t last long. Tang breaks it with an awkward, “So, you’re not human, are you?” towards dad.
MK has decided that, no, it seems like normal doesn’t exist for him anymore.
