Chapter Text

Chapter 1

Cassie Blake drifted slowly awake. Her blue eyes fluttered open and she gazed up at the familiar star-studded ceiling above her bed. Her mom had decorated it when she was a teenager.

Her mom. Cassie choked back a sob as sadness and longing for her mom overwhelmed her. She missed her mom so much. There was so much she needed to tell her. Like how her death had changed her life forever. How moving to Chance Harbor to live with her grandma had set a chain of irrevocable events in motion.

She learned she was a hereditary witch and met the other members of her Circle. She had found her family's Book Of Shadows. She had even discovered that her father, John Blackwell, was alive and came from a lineage filled with Dark Magic.

Most of all she wanted to tell her mom about Adam Conant. How she felt an irrevocable connection to him the moment they met. He was so handsome with his dark, spiked hair, mesmerizing hazel eyes, sexy smile, and stocky build. It was his personality that drew her the most. He was strong, capable, caring, confident, and supportive.

Their connection was instantaneous. Visceral. Earth-shattering. She felt as if she couldn't breathe. And if there was an invisible cord tying the two of them together. She wondered for a while whether Adam had as hard a time keeping the confusing emotions from showing on his face.

She didn't have long to wait until she realized Adam had feelings for her. He couldn't act on them because he was with Diana Meade.

She understood. Neither of them wanted to hurt Diana. Diana had been her first friend when she moved to Chance Harbor.

Eventually, Adam and Diana broke up. She had sensed the growing attraction between her and Adam. Her doubts about the longevity of her relationship with Adam were cemented when Mr. Conant explained how Adam's destiny was with me, and not her. His words had prompted Diana to break up with Adam.

Adam had initially fought the breakup. He and Diana had grown up together. Their close friendship had turned into romance three years earlier. It was only when he saw Diana was moving on, did he finally accept that their relationship was over.

Only then were they able to reveal their feelings for each other. They had shared one magical night before everything went to hell. Her father told them there was a curse on their families. Dozens of dead crows surrounded her house. Jake Armstrong was stricken with a mysterious illness.

Her father had declared them signs of the curse. He convinced them to drink an elixir to save Jake's life. The elixir would make them forget their feelings for one another. With their hearts shattering, they downed the elixir. Watching Adam's love for her fade from his eyes had devastated her. What was even worse was realizing that the elixir hadn't worked on her. She still remembered everything that had happened between them.

The events of last night had changed everything. Adam had arrived at her house with his dad and Faye's mom. She had listened in stunned silence as they revealed there was no curse on her and Adam's families. Blackwell had made it all up to force her and Adam to drink his elixir.

She was still trying to process the information they had revealed to her when Adam told her that he, his Dad, and Mrs. Chamberlain had created a new elixir for them to drink. They believed that it would counteract the one Blackwell had concocted and restore her and Adam's feelings for each other. Adam told her he wanted to drink it and she agreed to do so as well.

Her heart was in her throat as she watched Adam drink the elixir. She had dissolved into tears when she looked into his eyes and saw love for her shining in them once again.

Adam was horrified to learn that her dad's elixir did not affect her. That sheh ad remembered everything that occurred between them, including how hard it had been on her to pretend now to have any feelings for him. He had vowed she would never be alone again.

A short time later, Mr. Conant and Mrs. Chamberlain had left them alone. She had asked Adam to stay the night with her and Adam agreed. She had intended for them to only sleep, but the moment they reached her bedroom, they were assaulted by the memories of the night they had made love. Seeking to reconnect with one another, they had made love again.

Smiling, as images of the night before flickered through her head, Cassie rolled over and reached for Adam. Her hand found empty space on the bed beside her. Tears filled her eyes as she wondered if she had only imagined the events of the night before. Was she truly destined to spend her life without Adam? Sobs tore through her as she curled into a fetal position and wept.
