Zelda was 15, the standard age for when a royal got their guards, she hadn’t been looking forward to it, the loss of that freedom, and also, the fact that her father had already picked them out didn’t help or make her feel better about it, a silent knight by the name of Link, who wielded the Master Sword, he had been brought in by one of her father’s former guards, the father of the boy, and Link had been taken to train shortly after that.
The second was the disgraced granddaughter of the Madrigal, she had been banished for the inability to control her rune ability, which even after extensive training, remained volatile, she had been found at seven, and shortly after, she had been taken in by a couple in the guards, Anya and Tenia, and raised alongside Zelda from six a long while before the ten-year-old Link came along, shortly thereafter, she was thrown into trailing, becoming a master at dual-wielding. She rarely used a shield, instead opting to use her custom blades, slightly thicker, and rectangular than the average broadsword, and only having one sharpened side, which was peculiar for a blade, something she made up for with her unique fighting style.
Zelda wasn’t too opposed to her, especially when she learned that she took the guard duty a little less seriously than Link, and would wait for her outside the Divine Beasts, and sometimes tried to hold Link off from going inside with her.
Plus, her abilities were fascinating .
She could see the aura about others, and by extension, their emotions, a side effect of gaining her powers so early and activating a permanent rune by accident, and because of this, she often made it a point to encourage her.
‘Your aura is getting stronger princess.’
‘It doesn't happen overnight princess, but I think you were close ’
‘Hey, at least yours don’t go out of control when you can’t control them!’
Zelda found she preferred Mirabel's slightly more energetic presence over Link’s somber one. So when she could only take one guard with her to Gerudo town, as the rules said, she was pleased when she realized that Link could wait at the Kara Kara Bazaar, and she could go in with her more lenient guard, who was okay with letting her go aboard Divine Beast Vah Naboris, alone with Urbosa.
This is how she found herself on the back of her steed, with Mirabel trailing behind her on her blue dun colt, Zelda was pretty sure that she had named the colt Danzo, keeping an eye on the ground looking for Lizalfos, and her eyes glowing slightly as she looked at every passing traveler as Gerudo town grew closer and closer, she smiled slightly as a cool breeze made her hair flutter. Mirabel let out a sigh as a group of guards came out, taking the horses from the two as Mirabel fell into step behind Zelda, not relaxing a margin until they were within the walls of the city. But even then, she did a quick scan of the pavilion marketplace that led up to the main palace.
Zelda took the way that her eyes didn’t linger or harden as a sign that no one there had any ill intent towards them, or at least her.
‘I don’t understand. Why didn’t you leave if you knew he was going to attack or at least try something against you?’
‘That’s the way of the world Princess, your life is priority over mine, and if no one bears any ill intent to you in the room, then it is none of my business who they are aiming that malic to.’
‘He insulted you, Mirabel. He tried to kill you.’
‘…some people just don’t like that a disgraced got the position of your royal guard.’
Her gut still churned remembering the conversation from the previous night as Mirabel gently prodded at a bruise from a drunkard, a former soldier who had decided that he was better than Mirabel purely because she had been disowned by her family for not being able to control her ability.
Zelda found it a bit scandalous when some people who knew about Mirabel’s family would spit the word ‘reject’ or ‘bastard’ at her under their breath. Mirabel claimed that she didn’t mind, but the slight downward tilt of her ears often gave her real emotions away.
“Zelda.” Came a warm voice, Urbosa strolled up easily, causing Zelda to smile, what she didn’t see, and what Mirabel did, was the genuine platonic fondness and motherly love that Urbosa held for Zelda, displayed in a warm orange and pink aura that surrounded her, and Zelda as well.
MIrabel’s smile turned sad at that.
Julieta had once looked at her like that before her aura turned to a dark red color that mixed with black to display fear and hatred as her ability manifested and nearly destroyed the town.
“Hello Mirabel, are you going to grace me with your attention?”
Mirabel’s head snapped up at the light voice of the woman, who grinned when Mirabel returned from her thoughts.
Mirabel nodded her greeting and respect to the Gerudo Chieftain, who smiled and pulled her over for a side hug, ruffling her hair fondly. Mirabel grinned slightly, at the palace showing any emotion was generally frowned upon. They were guards, sometimes nothing more than pretty little decorations, not Hylians with genuine emotions.
Zelda turned to Mirabel with a smile on her lips.
“Mirabel, I’m going into the divine beast for a while, you can go to the guard's quarters, and maybe get yourself something to eat. “
Mirabel frowned slightly, even when Zelda was inside the Divine Beasts, she was supposed to be watching Zelda from a distance. Urbosa, sensing Mirabel’s unease, playfully knocked her shoulder with her arm.
“What? You think I can’t watch after her?”
Mirabel paused eying the orangish red color of confidence before sighing.
“Just be back before midnight please?”
Zelda nodded, quickly giving her a rushed hug. Leaving Mirabel standing in the pavilion, before she sighed, watching the backs of the two women, one with a pep in her step, happy to not have a guard breathing down her neck, the other with a protective hand between her shoulder blades.
She let a fond smile quirk her lips as the two of them walked to the divine beast, Mirabel walked to the guard quarters, quietly saying hello to Bella, an older market owner who made a sweet pastry that she enjoyed. Glancing up at the darkening sky, she sighed and found an empty cot that might as well be hers with how often she used it, there was even a storage compartment with some of her desert clothes and weapon maintenance equipment in it.
Mirabel wanted to deny it, but ever since she had been banished from the Encanto Village, she found a home in Gerudo Town. She had found a home in the sisterhood that surrounded the guard, the way that the Gerudo were free to love without any threat of consequences.
Mirabel grimaced slightly as she realized that she had started to cry, wiping the hot tears away, she pulled off the leather armor on her Hylian Tunic, a clothing option meant for being discreet and avoiding the eyes of the Yiga with flashier guard armor.
Most of the time, she preferred the usage of the Chilly Elixirs to help her body stay cooler so that she didn’t have to wear the Gerudo Armor. It showed far too much skin in her opinion.
The barracks were cooler, to begin with, and it was comfortable.
What she intended to be a quick hour nap, turned into her crashing for the rest of the night.
______________
She was awakened by one of the guards shaking her shoulder, slightly panicked.
“Wha-“
“My apologies Mirabel, but a Blood Moon has arisen and the Princess and Lady Urbosa are cornered. “
Mirabel shot up like a rocket, already pulling on her leather armor and equipping her weaponry. Swearing under her breath as she mounted her horse, and galloped at high speeds towards the sound of crashing thunder, she wanted to swear as her horse crested the final dune.
A hoard of moblins, lizalfos, bokolins, and a few lynels even, were falling in droves as Urbosa lightning struck the ground with shattering speed, standing protectively over Zelda, lashing out with her sword at any monster that got too close. Zelda, who Mirabel noted as she drew her bow and notched a bomb arrow, aiming for the groups of monsters that were farther away from her friends, was mostly okay besides a few bruises.
Her arrows drew the attention of a portion of the beasts.
A lynel roared as it charged at her, Mirabel launched another bomb arrow at it, snarling ferociously as she drew one of her swords and cut down a black bokolin that had been edging closer, a loose ring of monsters formed around her, and her horse, she growled in the back of her throat, she couldn’t use a bomb arrow here, even if her life were insignificant compared to the princess’s, she had still promised Link that she would return the princess largely unscathed to the Kara Kara Bazaar when it was time to go, she was surprised the knight had yet to rush out on his horse to join the fray.
But that thought was cut off as a Moblin made a rush grab for her, only to find itself with one limb, and her second sword going through its brain. Mirabel dismounted in one smooth motion, allowing her frightened horse to run back to the stables, the lynel was still circling, but ignored the horse and stayed at a much greater distance in comparison to the small herd of lizalfos, moblins, and bokolins. Mirabel growled under her breath as she twirled around each of the beasts, allowing herself to get close only to snap away and destroy them seconds later, by the time the blood moon had stopped glowing, resurrecting the beasts that she tried so hard to destroy, she was just left with the large lynel, which without the sheen of the red moon bearing down, she was left staring down a fully grown white-maned lynel.
Growling under her breath, she began the familiar dance of weaving and dodging, adjusting her style to the brutal and swift movements of the lynel; unfortunately, her movements lacked what they had at the beginning of the battle. Waves of blood moon-resurrected beasts had taken a toll on her.
Mirabel was losing poise and she could feel it.
The ache in her bones made her knees buckle for a split second, and that’s all it took for the lynel to ram her with the flat side of its savage blade, sending her flying across the sandy ground. Mirabel let out a yelp of pain as the green frames of her glasses were jammed into her face, the glass that shattered in the left lens narrowly missed her eyes but found purchase in the skin around it.
When she came to a stop, the vibrations in the ground told her all she needed to know as the lynel bore down on her. Then the faintest smell of ozone hit her nose, even making the lynel pause.
A fatal mistake.
A singular flash of dangerous lightning struck the lynel dead as she heard another, arguably much smaller set of feet running towards her, she groaned miserably as she was turned onto her back by Zelda, whose face was painted in worry, or at least, Mirabel thought it was, she was having difficulty seeing through a cracked lens. She grimaced slightly as blood began to trickle steadily down her face, a stinging pain reminding her viciously of the glass shards embedded in her face.
“You alrigh’ Princess?” She slurred out, Zelda was crying she noted as a few droplets hit her face, covered in an aura of dark red, and light blue, fear and worry. A larger set of footsteps followed by a much larger blurry figure entering her peripheral had her blinking up at Urbosa, who gently began to assess her.
Noting which areas had Mirabel flinching at the slightest touch, such as the large bruise that was forming on her back, and the tender area of her face, all the slightest twitching of her fingers giving away the last of her adrenaline leaving her.
“We should…both…town.”
Mirabel was barely conscious as she felt a set of arms gently pluck her from the ground. She groaned miserably as the arm supporting her lower back brushed against her bruises. The voice that carried her was silent and soothing, muttering sweet nothings to her as she drifted off into darkness.
It was nice to know that they cared like this.
“...Mirabel…awake-”

There was something scratchy on the left half of her face, holding what felt like a gauze pad against her eye.
That was the first thing she noted as she became more aware, there was a dull ache everywhere, her back, and spine, the left side of her face. The next thing she became aware of was a warm form, or rather something warm holding her left wrist, finger pressed uncomfortably into her pulse point, and a slight pressure on her arm
Groaning she finally pried her eye open, she froze when she spotted a familiar mope of blonde hair. Her face softened a margin when she realized Zelda was asleep, and she used her arm as a pillow. Taking a deep breath she tried to quell her emotions, she could still see the faint outline of red, but now there was a deep purple, relief, and light blue, worry.
“You gave us quite the fright” a voice spoke suddenly. Mirabel jumped slightly, freezing as Zelda stirred for the briefest of moments, before settling again, muttering in her sleep. Mirabel’s head turned to the corner, where Urbosa leaned against the wall, attempting to mask her worry with a scolding aura. Something most of the champions had or tried to attempt multiple times once they learned of her abilities, Mirabel snorted softly rubbing a hand over her face, smiling slightly.
“So says the wielder of Urbosa’s fury,” she muttered, which earned her a light flick in her forehead, Urbosa sighed.
“You’re lucky you know that? If the glass shards had been in any other places, you would be down an eye.”
Mirabel’s gaze went downwards.
‘I know.” she muttered softly, the conversation continued for a while, starting to taper off when Zelda finally woke up. A soft groan alerted them and Mirabel glanced down, a small smile molded on her lips. “Awake princess?” She teased lightly as Zelda woke with a start. She snapped over to Mirabel. She briefly froze before realizing that they were practically holding hands, she jerked hers back with a blush, a dark pink aura around her spiking for a moment, signifying embarrassment. But her aura quickly turns to a soft yellow, signifying joy.
“Mirabel!” The princess went to hug her guard only to pause and clear her throat. “Urbosa, a moment with my guard please?”
The chieftain nodded, smiling slightly as she left the two alone. Mirabel grimaced as she pulled herself into a more upright position, she stared slightly at Zelda’s form, keeping in mind that the princess had also been minorly injured.
“How are your bruises, Princess?” She asked softly, watching her reaction carefully. Zelda’s aura turned to a deep shade of ocean blue, disappointment. Mirabel looked away, she hated when Zelda didn’t use her words to express her disappointment, but instead let Mirabel observe it through her aura.
“Mirabel, you were… so close to losing an eye. Why didn’t you use your rune ability?” she finally asked in a soft voice. Mirabel huffed.
“You saw what happened when I was training with Revali, I almost blew the Rito Village off the cliffside, it isn’t worth it, I don’t want to hurt anyone,” she explained in a low tone, looking away for a moment, only to freeze as she felt her warm arms wrap around her shoulders.
“ Please don’t do that again.” Zelda sounded like she was crying. “I can’t lose my best friend. “
Mirabel sighed softly and let Zelda hold her. Letting the warmth from the princess melt away some of her anxiety. She hadn’t failed yet, she still had time to make sure that the princess was safe.
Even if it was at the cost of their own life.

Zelda let out a strangled cry as Mirabel collapsed after Link, her breathing shallow and labored, blood soaking her side, and her glasses long since gone. She scrambled to try and pull her friend closer while keeping the knight undisturbed in death.
Mirabel groaned softly as her injuries were jostled.
“Mirabel. Mirabel pl ea se.” Zelda begged as a duo of Sheikah jumped into view, Impa immediately tending to Mirabel, tilting her head back as she poured a healing elixir down her throat, Mirabel’s injuries began to slowly mend. Impa tutted slightly as Zelda stood, already having issued the orders to take Link to the Shrine of Ressurection.
“It will take years for her injuries to be healed properly if the elixir does the job. The injury is malice touched, it might take up to a century for her to be up and running.”
Zelda’s eyes went down the the ‘Stasis’ option on Sheikah slate, she took a deep breath and aimed it at the prone form of her best friend, clicked, watching as the yellow glow enveloped her, chains materializing, Impa’s eyes widening as Zelda thrust the slate towards her.
“There’s a cave, up in the Hebra Region, it has doors and a shrine-”
“The one with the leviathan skeleton?”
Zelda nodded.
“Take her there, then get her swords repaired, make sure that when Link awakens, he wakes her as well.”
Impa nodded seriously, gently wrapping a few of her more serious injuries Zelda watched as Impa scooped her friend up, and sprinted in the direction of the cave, avoiding guardians and dodging rogue monsters. Zelda took a shuddering breath as she picked the Master Sword up, and glanced in the direction of the castle, where… everyone was dying.
Glancing down to the stains of blood on the grass.
Her resolve turned to steel.
She would defeat Ganon.
Even if it killed her.
