Something Joja This Way Comes is a Stardew Valley expansion that adds “rivals” — characters employed by Joja to help them supplant all of Pelican Town’s local shops, not just Pierre. This means new NPCs with new mechanics by which they can threaten your livelihood… and vice versa.
MEET
Gungho: The neurotic head of the mechanized JojaFarm on the opposite side of town. She uses JojaGrow fertilizer, which makes crops bloom instantly! (Side effects may include: low quality crops, giant crops, and instant crop death.) Did I mention that she’s uphill of you? Rainy days are about to get a lot more interesting.
Crystal: Reclusive, elusive, and weird. Most of the time she can be found on her trawler, which supplies JojaMart with fish at the cost of depopulating whatever body of water it’s currently in. At other times, she’s having a drink at the saloon, rummaging through people’s trash, or hanging out on the docks.
Jack: Jack is an “ecology consultant” for Joja — but since his job mostly consists of destroying the environment, he also runs construction projects, just to feel a little more like he’s contributing to society. Periodically clears random areas of the Cindersap Woods, leaving no resources behind.
Rocky: A gruff divorcee and short king who’s been hired by Joja to delve the mines. Rocky is rather unhappy about this, having not been told about the monsters beforehand. You will occasionally run into him in the mines. You should hope that you don’t, though, because Rocky leaves no stone unturned. He moves to the quarry once you’ve unlocked it.
Hunter: A young soldier hired by Joja to clear the mines of monsters. Hunter is actually quite fascinated by monsters, but it’s a little hard to study them when they aren’t dead. He can also be encountered in the mines, and whatever floor you find him on will be empty of monsters.
Tanner: Hunter’s younger sister who runs a JojaBarn. A quiet, unassuming woman that loves animals, but hates the way Joja treats them. Your animals may produce poisonous versions of their normal products due to the runoff — void eggs instead of normal eggs, red mushrooms instead of truffles, et cetera.
NEW AREAS
JojaFarm/JojaBarn: Joja’s massive farming and animal husbandry operation, situated east of the JojaMart.
JojaHomes: A trailer court that serves as temporary housing for the rivals. Cindersap Forest is being bulldozed to make way for a suburb, but the trees and stones just keep mysteriously reappearing…
SABOTAGE
HELP WANTED: That Joja lass could catch every last fish in Pelican Town with that trawler of hers… It’d be a shame if something happened to it. — Willy
— 1000g reward.
— Willy will be thankful.
> Sabotage the trawler.
Just because Junimos’ arms are too short to throw a Molotov cocktail doesn’t mean that you have to limit yourself like that. All Joja operations can be sabotaged in two ways — either blow something up with a bomb, or do something that’s just very annoying.
The explosive option cancels out relevant Joja penalties for 28 days with a few side effects, while the annoying option only does it for 7. But be warned: blowing shit up has consequences.
JojaFarm:
Explosive option:
Blow up the fertilizer tank. Triggers the runoff effects immediately.
Annoying option:
Steal the fertilizer out of the tank.
JojaFish:
Explosive option:
Blow up the trawler. Fills the relevant body of water with trash for the next 24 hours because you blew up a boat in it.
Annoying option:
Slash the nets. A bunch of normal-quality fish fall out.
JojaBuild:
Explosive option: Blow up the bulldozer. Lose a heart with Marnie, Shane, Jas, Leah, and the Wizard because you blew up a bulldozer next to their houses.
Annoying option: Steal the bulldozer blade. In a furnace, it melts down into 10 iron bars.
JojaMine:
Explosive option (mines):
Blow up the elevator. (This also blocks Hunter.) However, you
also
cannot access the elevator until it’s fixed. Hope you brought stairs…
Explosive option (quarry):
Blow up the bridge that leads to the quarry. If you’ve unlocked the minecarts, you can still use those.
Annoying option:
Sneak into Rocky’s trailer and steal his pickaxe. If you needed an iron pickaxe, there you go.
JojaSafe:
Explosive option
: Blow up the elevator. (If you haven’t unlocked the quarry yet, this also blocks Rocky.)
Annoying option:
Sneak into Hunter’s trailer and steal his claymore.
JojaBarn:
Explosive option:
Blow up the barn. The river in town is red for a while.
Annoying option:
Release the animals into the woods. You get to steal their products afterwards.
But let’s not forget the most powerful weapon in your arsenal: friendship.
If you get all of your rivals to eight hearts? Well, let’s not spoil the surprise.
