Modern Secondary Society
Alphas: 5% of the population
Betas: 93% of the population
Omegas: 2% of the population
Roles in Society
Alphas work in physically demanding fields. Construction working, plumbing, law enforcement, etc. Betas work in the service industry because they are the best at scenting. Omegas work as doctors, lawyers, scientists– jobs that require an intelligent mind
Fated
A Fated Omega is an Alpha’s one true mate. When an Alpha comes of presenting age, one of the first signs that they’re an Alpha is the appearance of words on their wrist scent gland. The words are said to be the words of their Fated Omega when they first meet. Once an Alpha and their Fated Omega meet, it triggers the Alphas rut; they become obsessed with protecting the Omega and leaving a claiming mark on their neck scent gland. If these things don’t happen within the first few days of the rut onset, the Alpha will enter a cycle of rutting every so often until the Omega is claimed and protected to the Alpha’s satisfaction.
However, the Fated Omega has the ability to reject their Alpha for whatever reason (abuse, age, illness, their heart belongs to another, etc.). If this happens, the Alpha’s words will be erased from their skin. There are rare cases where a Fated Omega may seek to remove their bond with their Alpha. They are able to do this in a number of ways, but the easiest is to remove the scent gland that contains the mating bite. Though it takes years, the scent gland will grow back, albeit smaller and weaker. This forcible rejection causes scarring over the Alphas scent gland.
There aren’t many Alphas that have been rejected, so it is not known if the scarring goes away or if it’s possible for another Fated Omega for the Alpha. After all, people have two wrists.

Chapter Text
Enji’s in class when it happens.
He sits in the back of the room, taking notes diligently (his father looks over his notebooks at home), when his wrist cramps. Except, it feels more like someone’s taken it and started engraving pain. He flips his wrist over and a single word appears: Rindou.
His father of course couldn’t be happier. The words mean that not only is he an Alpha, but one with a Fated Omega “that has class.” Enji doesn’t care; he often finds himself rubbing at the scent gland on his left wrist. Sometimes he swears he can feel the phantom pain of when the mark first appeared.
But then his father gets sick. He worries about their legacy and in so doing, arranges a marriage for Enji. As Enji had never cared to find his Fated Omega, this didn’t bother him.
When he meets Rei Todoroki, he’s not sure what to make of her. Though she’s an Omega, she wears scent patches so Enji can’t scent her out. The meeting goes well in that Todoroki senior agrees to marry his daughter off to Enji. They walk together after the meeting in silence until Rei suddenly stops, staring off seemingly into the distance.
“What is it?” Enji stops too and tries to see where she’s looking. All he sees are flowers that remind him of Rei’s eyes. “Are these your favorite?”
Rei nods.
“What are they?” Enji asks, ready to commit the type to memory.
“Rindou.”
For the second time in Enji’s life, his left wrist burns. This time though, he knows what’s going on. The odds were low yet somehow, he’s found his Fated Omega. The only thing he can feel is lukewarm dread; his father will be beyond the moon.
Somehow, Enji’s father lives to see Rei and Enji marry and then he passes.
Rei stands beside him at the funeral site, and Enji uses a handkerchief to wipe the sweat off his forehead. It’s hot today, overbearingly so, so much like Enji’s father. Rei holds his hand the entire time, even as both their hands grow sweaty. It’s the first time that Enji sees Rei as his mate.
When Rei finally rejects him, Enji feels a large sense of relief, followed quickly by a wave of guilt so strong it brings him to his knees. For the third time in his life, his left wrist aches and he slaps scent patches over both wrist scent glands. There’s no reason for these glands anymore. It’s one of the ways he strives to atone, giving up the potential of another mate, another chance at happiness. Monsters like him don’t deserve second chances.
It’s these thoughts and memories that plague him as he heads into the office. He’s become the CEO that his father always dreamed of, even at its high cost. It’s the only thing keeping him sane at this point, and he pulls long hours.
Being home alone at the Todoroki estate with all those memories hurts something awful and Enji knows he should be suffering, but even being home is a little much at times. He rubs at his forehead, feeling the wrinkles there. It’s been twenty-something years since Enji has truly been alone and he still doesn’t know what to do with the…space. And silence.
“Ah, there you are Number One!” Well, almost complete silence.
“Taka–”
“I told you to call me Hawks, boss!” The newcomer, Hawks, crows.
“That name is utterly ridiculous.” The familiar back and forth calms Enji in a way that he’ll never acknowledge.
“You’re no fun,” Takami “Hawks” Keigo whines playfully. He strides further into Enji’s office though Enji has yet to officially invite him in. “It makes me wanna hang onto these files instead of–”
“Hawks,” Enji says sternly, holding out a hand.
Hawks laughs, light and airy, before handing over the files. Their fingers brush and something cold falls into Enji’s stomach. He pulls his hand away quickly, even at the expense of a few papers falling from his grasp. He ignores Hawks as he gathers the scrambled papers and starts to read through the first few quickly.
Hawks doesn’t take this as a dismissal as anyone else under Enji’s employ would; instead, he walks further into Enji’s office, until he’s at the ceiling to floor windows. It’s a familiar sight and Enji tries to ignore how it settles his breathing.
Hawks has been Enji’s personal assistant for three years now. He’d been in desperate need of one when Rei filed for divorce. All the paperwork, meetings… He’d just wanted to give Rei and their children whatever he had to offer. Hawks had swept in at the behest of Tsunagu, the head of his PR team.
“He may be young, but his seams are as strong as old-washed denim,” Tsunagu had said when Enji called him the morning Hawks appeared in Enji’s office
As much as the anthology rankled, it turns out to be true. Hawks has the uncanny ability of looking at a situation and being able to immediately pick up on every detail that can be used to their advantage. It saved them from their share of scandals (either because of incompetent employees or oversight at the top levels).
Enji was loath to admit it, but he’s grown used to Hawks. Finds his presence… reassuring in a way. As long as Hawks is on the job, the company will be fine.
Enji will be fine.
The last thought feels a little too desperate and Enji decides to forget that he’d ever thought such a thing.
“I know this great new place we can go for lunch,” Hawks interrupts his musings and Enji is thankful for it, though he’ll never say it. “They have the best lemon pepper wings! And their–”
“If I agree, will you stop your incessant chattering?” Enji mumbles, still looking over reports. He’s been reading the same line of numbers since Hawks walked into his office.
“You already know it, Number One!” Hawks gives a lazy salute before turning toward the door. They both know Enji will follow him without prompting.

Chapter Text
The chicken wings are in fact decent. Enji was hoping on some level that they wouldn’t be and he would be able to storm out. But, a man’s gotta eat. And pay, apparently, he finds out when Hawks claims to have “forgotten” his wallet. Enji doesn’t know why he expects anything different when it always goes like this.
“What did I tell ya, Big Guy? Those wings were to die for, right?!” They’re walking back toward the office, the sun beating down their backs. Enji pulls at his collar.
“Hmm,” he grunts in response, finally giving in to untying his tie and unbuttoning the top button.
“Next time I wanna try the sweet heat flavor,” Hawks muses, and Enji feels his eyes on the side of his face. Where his skin is scarred.
Enji grunts again, stopping on the sidewalk, waiting for the walk sign to come on. Hawks isn’t paying attention and keeps walking and talking. There’s the sound of a horn and Enji reaches out for Hawks. He manages to pull him out of the road just as a car whooshes by. The momentum leads Hawks to crash into Enji’s side. His hands wrap and meet around Hawk’s waist. Up this close Enji can breathe in Hawks scent without even trying– strong like the ground after a fresh spring rain, and the hint of something sweet like honey.
“Watch where you’re going, boy,” Enji growls, rightening Hawks before letting go of him.
Hawks laughs breezily. “You’ve always got my back, don’tcha Big Guy?”
Rather than reply, Enji jammed the walking button impatiently. It turns almost immediately thank the gods, and he power walks across the street. He knows he won’t lose Hawks, but for a moment he basks in the silence and the illusion that he has.
“Soooo…” Hawks trails off, and Enji sighs deeply. Of course the silence couldn’t last.
“What is it?” Enji asks tightly, moving a bit faster once the office building is in sight.
Rather than respond right away, Hawks remains silent until they enter the building’s elevator. “Your lawyer contacted me.”
Enji tenses, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
“Everything’s been finalized.” Even though it’s a simple sentence, everything whooshes out of him and he allows his shoulders to fall. It’s officially the end; there’s nothing else to be done. “Rei has moved into the villa along with Shōto and Natsu.”
Even though he’s been expecting it, encouraging it, it still hurts knowing his sons wish to be away from him. Due to the volatile nature of their marriage and mating, Enji thought it best to keep Rei away from the memories,… Him. It’s part of his way of atoning for the harm he’d caused his family. Enji had been a man that didn’t believe in regrets, but now he’s drowning in them. Some days are better than others, but usually any reminder of his largest and now most public failure, knocks the wind out of him and throws him into a place that’s dark and cold.
“Fuyumi hasn’t decided yet and…” Hawks trails off, but Enji half hears him.
He already knows how Hawks is going to finish his sentence. Tōya is still nowhere to be found. After revealing the abuse Enji put his mate and family through publicly, he’d practically fallen off the face of the Earth. Enji’d hired a private investigator to try and find his wayward, criminal son. So far there’s only been dead ends.
“… Thanks.” If Enji weren’t wearing scent patches, he’d be scenting the elevator something fierce, filling it with the smell of acrid smoke.
For once, Hawks doesn’t fill the remaining silence as they reach the top floor. Enji’s grateful.

Chapter 4: (anti) Hero
Summary:
They’re ushered into the club before Keigo can come up with a good response. The club they’ve chosen for the night is one where anything goes– scent patches aren’t required and Alphas and Omegas roam freely. There are even Omegas wearing collars with leashes that lead to an Alpha gripping it tightly. It’s a free for all and Keigo needs this on a Wednesday night.
Chapter Text
Hawks initially only takes the job because Enji Todoroki is his Hero.
When he was younger, Enji took down his father, who had been smuggling business funds. Until this point, the public didn’t care for him; after this Incident, people started paying attention to Todoroki enterprises. Including Hawks. Or, Takami Keigo.
He gets recruited by the Commission of Business Bureau shortly after his father’s capture. His mother willingly offers him up and Keigo has no say in the next twenty-something years of his life. They hone him to be the perfect Omega weapon in all operations. Undercover mostly, but Hawks can do it all. It’s how he initially stumbles upon Enji Todoroki outside of his dreams.
The man’s larger than life up close, the perfect example of an Alpha. The Omega inside him had desperately wanted to present for him right then and there. That was when Keigo realized his worship for Enji went beyond admiration. Him being married was of little consequence to Keigo; he still lusted after a man twenty-years his senior.
Hawks had no idea at the time that his undercover work would lead him to unearthing a Todoroki secret that just about destroyed his idol and first love. Seeing the pieces that Todoroki “Dabi” Touya left of his father is…heartbreaking. The pride this alpha once held crumpled so all that’s left is just a man.
A man, Keigo finds, is awkward and a little pathetic.
He tells Rumi as much that night after work.
“Well, you’ve always liked them a little broken, right?” She teases, bumping his shoulder as they wait in line.
Keigo rolls his eyes. “So do you, bitch.”
Rumi laughs long and loud. “What can I say? We make quite the pair.”
“So what are we drinking to?” Rumi asks, already holding up her glass.
“That this week’s almost fucking over,” Hawks decides, quickly clinking their glasses together before tossing his shot of tequila back.
Rumi quickly follows suit, laughing again once finished. They sit and talk and drink and Keigo can almost forget that he’s in love with his boss, a damaged and depressed older man that would never look at him the way he desired. Keigo even dances with a few Alphas at one point, too drunk to realize they all resemble Enji.
When he’s done, he goes searching for Rumi only to find her dancing and making out with some Omega on the dance floor. He sighs to himself, not surprised that his friend has found a conquest for the night. He wishes he could say the same, but waking up with regret and a hangover was for his early twenties. Now, it’s enough regret to wake up with just a hangover.
The night air is cool when Keigo exits the club. It’s like he’s finally catching his breath after running a marathon. He leans against the brick wall of the club and calls an Uber. While he waits, he considers bumming a cigarette from some people milling about outside, but decides against it. He’s not in the mood to make small conversation.
The Uber pulls up shortly thereafter and before Keigo knows it, he’s being dropped off in front of his apartment. What he isn’t expecting is for a body to be sitting at his front door once he gets to his floor. But he’d recognize that raven black hair anywhere, and the stench of grime and tobacco.
“What are you doing here, Dabi?” Hawks asks, approaching his door cautiously. Dabi looks up, piercing blue eyes, eyes so much like his father’s, unreadable. He slowly staggers to his feet. Even slouching he manages to somehow tower over Hawks. He simply rolls his eyes at the display and puts a hand on his hip. “Well?”
“Heard about the finalization. How I don’t get shit but a key to… Rei’s…new villa.” There’s an accusation there but Hawks chooses to ignore it.
“Is there something I can do for you?” Hawks asks, knowing the question might provoke him. He’s too tipsy and tired to care.
“Get me a meeting with the old man,” Dabi demands, getting into Hawks’ personal space. The smell of acrid smoke becomes stronger.
“You know your father would meet with you if you called him, right?” It’s a rhetorical question because they both know the answer. But that answer doesn’t lead to Dabi at his door past midnight.
“You know as well as I know, that there’s more to your story to reveal to the public. If you thought last time was bad…” The threat hangs in the air and Hawks considers his options. No matter what he ends up choosing, it’ll still lead to Dabi finding his way onto Hawks’ couch for the night.
“Fine.” He finally says, forcing the tension out of his body. He forces himself to brush past the Alpha to unlock his front door. “I’ll get you on his schedule tomorrow.”
Dabi crowds behind him and Hawks forces himself to take a deep breath even at the expense of breathing in Dabi’s horrid scent. “Goodnight.”
For once, Dabi lets him close the door on him and Hawks immediately does all seven locks. He looks around his apartment for anything awry but doesn’t find anything amiss. He lets out a sigh of relief for small miracles. His stomach still cramps with anticipation of tomorrow and too much alcohol. He doesn’t throw up, but the bed and ceiling seem to spin. Keigo finally manages to fall asleep to the fantasy of him closing his front door on Dabi’s knobby hands over and over.

Chapter Text
Enji wakes and immediately knows the day is going to try what little patience he’s built up.
First he misses his alarm, putting him fifteen minutes behind his schedule. His oatmeal isn’t hot all the way through, and there’s a bleach stain on the tie he initially plans to wear. By the time he gets to the office (after sitting in thirty-minute traffic), he’s ready to call the day quits. But, he simply squares his shoulders and takes a deep breath. By the time he’s made it to his office floor, some semblance of calm has fallen over him.
“Hello, Daddy Dearest.”
Enji’s heart stops, only to pick up at twice the speed. Sweat breaks out on his forehead and he can feel the beginning of pit stains under his suit. His first-born shouldn’t have this affect on him; he should be thrilled . But his first-born’s the reason he almost lost everything and why half the public thought he was an Alphaist (someone that believes Alphas should be the only ones in charge, running things).
“…Toya…” Enji doesn’t know what to say to his number one regret.
“It’s Dabi,” Tōya snaps, crossing his arms across his thin chest. With the movement comes the smell of tobacco and something sour.
“…Dabi… What brings you here?” Enji says slowly, glad that no one is around if only to save himself from the embarrassment of whatever dirty laundry Toya’s about to throw at him.
“Wellllllllllll…” Toya drags the word out, looking around Enji’s office. “I just think it’s a little fucked that little Sho gets majority shares of this place.”
Enji takes a deep breath, holds it, and lets it out slowly. He should have known that To–Dabi would come calling after the announcement broke the news. Sure, Enji’d put it up for a vote, but the board ultimately voted in Shōto’s favor. But the man, the Alpha in front of him, doesn't understand defeat.
First things first though. “Who let you in here?”
“A little birdie told me you’d be free to chat.”
At those words, Enji meets Toya’s gaze. “What are you talking about?”
Toya just laughs, an ugly sound, before shrugging. “Well, father; what are you gonna do to set this right? You’re all about atonement now, eh?” It’s true, but it sounds mocking and impossible coming from those thin, chapped lips.
“It’s not up to me,” Enji settles on.
“Bull-fucking-shit.” And there it is, not his son, but Dabi ; the criminal loan shark that won’t stop until he’s gotten what he’s wanted. Even if it leads to murder. Enji idly considers calling the police since his son is a wanted man that disappears a little too well.
Just then, Enji’s office door opens and Hawks stands there, holding a tray with two steaming cups of tea. His lips pucker as he takes in the scene in front of him before a sly smile lights his face. “I can come back later?”
“Explain the meaning of this, boy,” Enji practically growls.
Dabi barks out a laugh. He turns from Enji to face Hawks. “Thanks for scheduling me in, boy .”
Enji would be breathing fire right now if he could. Instead, he contemplates on who to address first. Hawks takes the decision from him by soundly placing the tray of tea down. “Y’know, I pulled out that one Black tea from Indonesia. Would be a shame if it got cold.”
Enji watches as Dabi’s piercing eyes (so like his own) follow Hawks’ movements and this time he does growl. “Sit, Dabi .”
Dabi surprisingly does so, though he sits with his legs spread open and his arms over the back of the chair. Enji sits across from him and tries to ignore how much stronger Hawks scent is as he hands both Todorokis’ their cups of tea. It’s clear that Hawks is scenting in an attempt to ease the tension between father and wayward son. But it does little to steady Enji’s hands as he takes his teacup up to his lips and takes a small sip. It burns, but the spice of the tea clears his head and he clears his throat. “Thank you, Hawks.”
Dabi sneers, “Polite doesn’t look good on you, old man.”
Enji sighs from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head. “Who inherits majority shares isn’t just up to me; the board of directors has enough stock in the company to have equal voting rights.”
Dabi’s face clouds over. “Then convince the board.”
Hawks scoffs and both men turn to look at him. He lifts a shoulder and says, “Usually to convince the board you have to be in good standing.” Hawks doesn’t clarify who must be in good standing, but both Todorokis’ know to whom he’s referring.
“Then outbuy the directors next quarter,” Dabi finally says, reaching for his own cup of tea and gulping it down as if its scalding nature is nothing to him.
Enji doesn’t know how else to explain that there’s no future where Dabi has a stake in his company. But again, Hawks beats him to the punch.
“You know you’re talking billions of dollars, right?” When Dabi doesn’t interrupt, his laser gaze focused on Hawks, Hawks continues. “You’d also be asking your father to risk his own holdings in the company which could lead to the Todroki’s being pushed out.” Hawks pretends to consider something. “Buuuutttt, if you brought in some of the funds to persuade the board… The funds being procured through proper channels, of course.”
The intensity around Dabi seems to grow, and the stench of acrid smoke grows so strong that Enji’s eyes water. Finally, the scent dies down and Dabi grins slowly at Hawks, eyeing him in a way that Enji’s alpha doesn’t quite approve of, before Dabi faces him once more. “Now there is a solution! I can see why you hired this omega.”
There’s an implication there, but Enji isn’t sure what it points to; instead, he looks to Hawks to see his face in its signature smirk. His golden eyes however shine with an emotion that Enji can’t name. He clears his throat and replies, “Was there anything else you wanted to discuss?”
Dabi’s (cruel) smile morphs into a scowl. “Such a businessman ; No, father , there’s nothing else I wanted to discuss .”
He gets up abruptly and pushes past Hawks so that Hawks stumbles and nearly falls. Laughing to himself, Dabi finally exits Enji’s office. In the silence he leaves behind, Hawks regains his usual composure and takes Dabi’s seat. He pours himself some tea into Dabi’s cup and drinks it slowly.
“Apologies Big Guy; he somehow wormed his way–”
Enji realizes something he should have had months ago. “Has my son been bothering you, Hawks?”
The only indication that his question rankled Hawks, is Hawks small choke on his sip of tea. Enji’s (alpha) temper gets the best of him for a moment. “Why the hell wouldn’t you tell me about this, boy?”
Hawks calmly lowers the tea cup and pins Enji with that birdlike gaze. “And what would you have done about it, sir ?”
Enji’s suddenly breathless and he stands abruptly, if only to get the tension out of his body. “It’s not safe.”
“Why? Because he’s an alpha and I’m an omega?” Hawks rolls his eyes. “No offense, alpha, but I could take even you on.”
The thin thread that holds Enji’s alpha back snaps.
“ Submit , omega.” It’s not an alpha command, but Enji’s scenting so hard his scent patches can’t block out his scent. Hawks crumples like a house of cards.
“Didn’t think you had it in you, big guy,” Hawks slurs, eyes like liquid gold.
Enji manages to snap out of it by the sudden ripe smell of aroused omega. He beat back his alpha that clamored at the scent. He clears his throat and breaks eye contact with Hawks, shame filling his entire being.
He should have worked from home today.

Chapter Text
It takes a lot for Hawks to be embarrassed.
And yet, submitting to his boss so…crassly has him blushing hours later. He debates texting Rumi about it, but knows all she’ll do is laugh and then semi-seriously suggest he proposition his boss for sex. Enji hasn’t left his office since Dabi left and Hawks hasn’t stepped anywhere near the closed door. All their correspondence for the day has been through company emails. His computer dings with another email.
[Todoroki]: Please bring the files for Midoriya.
Hawks does as he’s bid and leaves the files at Enji’s door. He replies to Enji’s email on where to find the files and goes back to stressing over his behavior earlier that day. I shouldn’t have let Dabi in here! I could have held him off last night, even if it meant stinking up my apartment with his pheromones for the night. Enji’s probably put it together how much I want his stupid alpha coc–
“Hawks?!” Enji’s authoritative voice snaps him out of his thoughts as he looks up to see Enji leaning against his desk.
“Yes?” Hawks responds, voice raspy.
“Are you alright?” Enji looks somewhere over Hawks head.
“Of course! What’s up, Big Guy?” Hawks applauds himself for his voice sounding completely level.
“I want to apologize for earlier.” Enji’s cheeks pink.
Hawks is speechless. Not an easy feat. But he can count on one hand the number of times he’s heard Enji apologize. When he doesn’t reply right away, Enji keeps talking.
“As you know, I’ve been…trying…to do better.” Enji takes a deep breath like it pains him. “But, sometimes–”
“It wasn’t an alpha command; no need to worry!” Hawks tries for nonchalance, but knows he fails when Enji finally makes incredulous eye contact with him.
“T-Then why did you…” Enji trails off. It’s clear he’s not sure how to proceed.
Hawks wishes he had wings so that he could fly away from this conversation. But no, he’s wingless and has no choice but to reply.
“Are you sure you wanna know, boss?” Hawks stalls, hoping Enji will change his mind. Luck is not on his side.
“If it wasn’t an accidental alpha command, then–”
“Your voice,” Hawks begins, calculating the likelihood of his having a job after this confession, coming up nil. “The, uh, tone , if you will.”
Enji’s thick eyebrows furrow to the center of his forehead. Hawks hates how adorable he looks. But it’s clear that Enji expects him to keep explaining. He takes a deep breath. “That authoritative tone…made m…y omega a little soft.” Hawks usually hates blaming things on his secondary, but if it means saving face, he’ll do it.
His (mostly) honest answer grants him the reward of seeing the bridge of Enji’s nose and the tips of his ears go red. Enji looks away from him completely and clears his throat a few times. Silence stretches between them and Hawks flounders for something to say to smooth this all over.
“I’ll… Keep that in mind,” Enji finally replies, though his entire face goes red as he realizes the implication in that statement. “I mean, so I won’t do it again.”
Hawks nods, heart thudding in his chest because he wants. “Enji, I–”
A ringing cell phone interrupts whatever foolish thing Hawks was about to say. He mentally thanks whoever it is and he begins to pack up his things for the day. He needs a drink and a long bath after the day he’s had. He waves goodbye to Enji who’s still on the phone and hurries out of the office before he’s stopped. The desire for the older alpha wanes to a dull thrum by the time he’s home and a cold shower before soaking in the bath helps rid him of the residual desire.
In the bath, he sinks down until everything but his head is submerged. The warm, watery embrace lulls him into a state of peace. For a moment he’s able to forget the events of the day. When he opens his eyes again, he squints at first from the light of the bathroom. The water is lukewarm around him. He gets out of the tub and dries off quickly. After a quick brushing of his teeth, Hawks is ready for bed.
The last thing he thinks about is the blush on Enji’s face.

Chapter 7: Feel (no) Ways
Summary:
As he packs up for the evening, he hears a short knock on the door. He knows it’s Hawks and he wonders if he should permit him entry or not. As per usual, Hawks takes the decision away from him.
Chapter Text
Enji can’t stop thinking about Hawks.
He doesn’t know quite when it began, but here he is for the fifth time that morning thinking back to how Hawks melted at his words a few days ago. His alpha had threatened to take over and–
He shakes his head to rid himself of such wild thoughts and begins reading the report in front of him again for the third time. As they say, third time’s the charm and Enji finally makes it through the document to give it his stamp of approval. The rest of his day goes smoothly because he refuses to give himself down time that would allow his mind to wander. By the time the sun’s dying rays penetrate through his half-drawn blinds, Enji’s gotten more work done in a day than he can remember getting done previously.
As he packs up for the evening, he hears a short knock on the door. He knows it’s Hawks and he wonders if he should permit him entry or not. As per usual, Hawks takes the decision away from him.
“Let’s go to dinner, Big Guy; my treat!” Hawks easy smile would fool anyone else, but Enji likes to think he knows Hawks pretty well. His smile says that he’s trying to act like earlier didn’t happen, to act as if everything is normal. And normally, Enji would say no. But this time…
“Well, if it’s your treat,” he hedges, delighting in the shocked look on Hawks’ face.
Hawks clears his throat. “Of course , Sir!”
Enji chooses to ignore how being addressed that way makes his alpha growl. They make it to the elevator in silence. Enji isn’t exactly known as a conversationalist; usually, Hawks takes the lead and as always, Enji follows. But this time Hawks remains silent. He considers breaking the silence but then the elevator doors slide open and they’re in the lobby of the building. There’s a car outside already waiting for them.
Once in the backseat, Hawks breaks the silence.
“You don’t have to be so stiff, Big Guy,” he says, looking out the window. Enji can just make out his serious expression.
“I almost used an Alpha command on you,” Enji says flatly.
“Key word, almost ; plus… I already told you why I reacted that way.” Hawks chooses that moment to face him. His cheeks are rosy and his eyes sparkle. It’s a good look on him.
Enji knows the tips of his ears are pink. He’s been no stranger to Hawks’ contrived flirting since he began working for Enji, but it’s the first time that Enji feels that Hawks is actually attracted to him. It’s a startling thought and Enji tries to rid himself of it before his Alpha chimes in.
The car stops and as usual, Hawks quickly moves to exit the car. Enji follows behind much slower, thoughts still caught up in what Hawks may or may not feel for him. It shouldn’t matter what he feels because we don’t deserve a chance at another mate. Enji ignores how his Alpha howls in disagreement. There’s a whisper there that Hawks might be something–
“What’s taking so long, Number One?” Hawks is suddenly there, holding his car door open. He’s wearing that lazy smile that Enji thinks makes him look sleazy. “Having second thoughts?”
It’s rhetorical but Enji finds himself answering. “Perhaps.”
Hawks makes an odd sound and tilts his head to the side, almost like a bird would. “Sir…?”
Enji shakes his head and gets out of the car. He gestures for Hawks to lead the way. He has a strong feeling this casual dinner will become anything but. His Alpha licks its lips.
***
Enji’s acting strange.
Hawks knows it’s most likely his fault for being a little too honest, but the way Enji had looked at him, electric blue eyes downcast and lacking their usual lustere… He hates seeing that look on Enji’s face. Flirting has always been his way of defusing any real tension between them. This time he just…let his Omega do the talking a little. Which, as he should have known, was a shitty idea.
Might as well go down trying, Hawks’ Omega practically purrs. And looking at Enji sitting across from him, who’s ears haven’t lost their pink tint, Hawks is severely tempted to push his luck. He clears his throat.
“You’re going to kill what few brain cells you have, thinking so hard.”
Enji gives Hawks a baleful look. “Really? You, who only has one brain cell?”
A surprised laugh squawks out of Hawks mouth. “You know, you’re funny Mr. Todoroki Enji.”
“Not many would agree with you,” Enji replies, frowning slightly.
“Then they lack taste,” Hawks insists, hoping his comment can ease Enji’s frowning. He succeeds and gets a look of pure shock for his trouble. “I’m serious, Big Guy; you have a lot to offer.”
Enji clears his throat, but before he can say anything, their server returns with their food. Though Hawks is determined to make Enji see his point, his stomach growling calls to him louder. They spend the next few minutes eating; Hawks stuffing his face and Enji cutting into his meat carefully. It’s only when the gnawing sense of hunger evaporates that Hawks makes another attempt.
“You’re wicked smart, your net worth is taller than the Hero building, and you are a model Alpha.” There’s more, of course there’s more, but Hawks isn’t trying to permanently scare his boss off.
“Money isn’t everything,” Enji replies, taking a small sip of his water. His wine glass remains untouched. “And you should know better than anyone that I’m no ‘model Alpha.’”
“Try telling my Omega that,” Hawks mutters.
“What?”
Hawks blinks owlishly at Enji. Fuck me and my half-ass whispering!
He takes a deep breath before letting it out slowly. He turns on the charm; his thick lips widen into a smile that shows his perfectly white teeth, and he knows his eyes look like glowing embers of gold. “My Omega… They think you’re
perfect.

Chapter 8: Monster
Summary:
But there's a smaller part that recognizes the small gestures that Hawks incorporated when assisting Enji; turning the thermostat before he enters his office so it's nice and cool, adding an extra sugar in his coffee because despite how Enji looks, he's a sucker for sweet things.
Chapter Text
The following silence stretches between them as Enji stares blankly at Hawks. He knows what Hawks just said, but there's no way it could mean what it sounds like it means. In fact, it's probably another one of his horrible jokes. Enji's Alpha however, is chomping at the bit, beating against the cage that Enji's managed to manhandle him into. Omega thinks we are perfect Mate!
Enji clears his throat, not sure how to address his Alpha or Hawks next. All he does know is that there's no way someone who was the cause of so much physical and emotional pain deserves any kind of mate, much less one as great as Hawks.
As great as Hawks?
Now that he thinks about it, Enji never really considered Hawks's flirting to be genuine. Enji will never call himself a snoop, but whenever he's happened to see over Hawks's shoulder when he's on his phone, it’s safe to say Hawks has plenty of options to warm his nest at night.
That thought drives his Alpha absolutely wild.
Enji grips the table with the force of beating the voice and its urges back. He knows his face is pinched, and he hopes that it doesn't scare Hawks too much. No scare him away!
Yet, the thought of truly scaring Hawks away makes Enji's stomach churn and his lower back sweat. Many times Enji has found himself in idle car rides, minutes before or after meetings, that it's Hawks and himself against anyone. Since he hired him, Hawks has essentially never left Enji's side. He always makes himself available for Enji, no matter the hour or ridiculousness of the request.
That's his job! A large part of him argues. But there's a smaller part that recognizes the small gestures that Hawks incorporated when assisting Enji; turning the thermostat before he enters his office so it's nice and cool, adding an extra sugar in his coffee because despite how Enji looks, he's a sucker for sweet things.
“I think I lov—“
“Ahaha, I was obviously just joking, boss man!”
Enji blinks at Hawks expressionlessly once again, but on the inside the Alpha inside him rages. Enji tries, he really does, but his Alpha's cage was already wearing thin and the flippant way the omega just spoke makes the cage shatter into pieces. Enji finds himself bound back by his Alpha this time and can only distantly watch as his hand snatches Hawks's wrist lightning quick.
“Stay, Omega.”
Hawks can only stare at Enji, no, Enji's Alpha . His laughter dies like a rat in his throat and he swallows thickly.
“Stay, Omega. ” The voice is guttural and strokes at Hawks's vertebrae, making him shiver. He knows he should be somewhat scared—Enji's large, even for an Alpha, but the Omega inside him is thrilled .
Alpha wants us! Alpha is perfect! Alpha, Alpha, Alph—
“Uh, Enji?” Hawks forces himself to say, if only to override the trilling of his Omega. This isn’t good, you know! It means he’s lost control! That seems to make Hawks’s Omega even happier. He huffs in frustration.
“Omega smells off. Does Omega really not what Alpha? ” Enji's grip tightens to being a tad painful. Hawks tries to recall what they teach about handling out of control Alphas. Except he still has some kind of control. Maybe if we get out of here…
“Enji, Big Guy, I think we should go—”
“NO!” “It's an Alpha Command and Hawks can only sit frozen. The excitement his Omega expressed earlier is nowhere to be found; instead his Omega cowers inside him and Hawks smells his scent souring. People are starting to look and he doesn't know how to bring Enji back.
“Omega not want Alpha?” Enji asks again, leaning across the table into Hawks's face. It's a question backed with an Alpha command.
“I-I-I do... Want you, Alpha,” Hawks forces out. His Omega is still wary, but seems happy enough that Hawks voiced their desire.
“Come.”
Omega want Alpha. Alpha want Omega. Alpha take Omega to Den.
Omega too slow, need to carry, need to protect.
Omega doesn't smell good... Did Alpha do something wrong?
Alpha wants Omega to smell good again. Alpha purr to make better. Omega hisses. Omega must be sick, need to get to Den!
Omega... Omega... OMEGA ANSWER ME!
“Y-Y-Yes, Alpha?” Hawks doesn't know what to do.
Enji's practically kidnapped him and taken him back to the office building. Hawks didn't realize that Enji had been living in the space above the office. The space smells like Enji, not helping with the fogginess of Hawks's thoughts. Too much Alpha…
“Scent? ” Enji growls, head diving into Hawks's neck, where his scent is most potent. “ Wrong?”
Hawks isn't sure how to reassure Enji's Alpha when his Omega has decided it doesn't quite like the Alpha's current behavior.
You're the one that's been talking about how perfect he is! Help me calm him down, damn it!
Alpha is a threat...
It's only because he thinks we don't want him! Help me scent him to calm him down.
What if we get hurt?
Enji won't hurt us.
As if to prove his point, Enji chooses that moment to take off his shirt and drape it over Hawks's shivering form. “Omega cold?”
Hawks senses a small give in his Omega's will, allowing him to start scenting to replace the souring smell currently surrounding them. He pushes up into Enji's personal space and whispers a quick “Forgive me,” before rubbing their neck glands together.
Enji's body stiffens as if he's been electrocuted. Hawks takes a deep breath and leans back to see clearing turquoise eyes staring at him with increasing recognition and horror.
“Welcome back, Enji.”
