Chapter Text
It was simply bad luck that did it
It may have been fate too or something beyond mortal comprehension but that didn’t matter
It wasn’t premeditated
It wasn’t planned
The robbery and murder of the Waynes was simply a case of wrong place, wrong time. It could have only been prevented by sheer coincidence or foreknowledge of the event. Nothing more nothing less.
However it does not seem as if anyone, especially the young master Bruce could accept that fact.
Now Alfred Thaddeus Crane Pennyworth may have only been an employee of the Wayne household for 3 years but he can’t help but feel sympathy for the boy.
After all he did only come into the employ of the Waynes because of his own father’s passing. He put his whole life on hold for this job just to honor him. It wasn’t supposed to be permanent but still.
If he uprooted his entire life just to honor the life of a father who he had known his entire life then what master Bruce is currently enduring must be unspeakable.

It is both surprising and unsurprising how easily it is to get custody of the boy is. Alfred honestly still can’t believe that he managed it. A few bribes here, a couple lies there and suddenly (with both plenty and not enough warning) he is completely in charge of a 10 year old boy.
Alfred is theoretically completely prepared for this. He knows how to cook, clean, manage the billions of dollars in the Wayne Family bank accounts, and can defend the entire manor by himself if he so desires.
It’s not enough
Master Bruce used to be such a bright and kind child. If he was still that child then this would have been easy. He wouldn’t have had to be called out to the school multiple time a week because of fighting, he wouldn’t have to clean up broken plates or deal with the worst temper tantrums he had ever seen.
But master Bruce HAS changed. He no longer dresses up as Zorro, smiles at every stranger, or talks everyone’s ear off.
It’s hard to handle the sudden changes. Especially without any help.
Almost all of the other staff have quit and those who haven’t are on their way out.
Alfred is completely alone in this endeavor, but he can’t bring himself to regret it.
He is an under qualified 28 year old war veteran who’s only family is on the other side of the world, but that is leagues better than any other option than the boy has.
So he will do what he has to do.
