Chapter 1: Villain to Barista

Summary:

New life, new people, and… a familiar face?

Chapter Text

Within a world of Hero’s and Villains, there is a balance of good & evil. However, when that scale is tipped into unbalanced chaos, what exactly comes off as normal anymore? Within this binary of good & evil, you can see what you can see on a certain perspective. For Mistin Malace, they saw through the world through the villain perspective… they weren’t a power hungry villain who killed innocent civilians, nor were they wanting riches for themselves or for all out evil scheme. They were only a small villain in plain sight, stealing what they need and doing what they can to survive. They took small jobs for quick cash and used their ability when necessary for quick escapes. Their Villain name: Dusk, however was known as the Misty Crook among the villain world, never caught never spotted. Many small villains were sure they’re ability was useful enough for quick in’s and outs if shit we’re to go wrong. However Dusk, was picky upon clients, making sure to go for the low risk jobs, it was rare for them to go high risk, however Helping support their family debt, along with looking out for those who struggle, even if they’re struggling themselves, was more important to both get the job done and never slow down. Through all those years of constant struggle and frustration they were able to disappear without a trace…. Some wondered where they gone, some said in rumors they saved enough money to go under the radar away from the hero’s sights, was caught and taken care of... The answer was simple…. They simply left, moving far away where no one will recognize them. Living the peaceful life they’ve always desired, for in their eyes… a peaceful life to refresh and start over was worth more than all the gold in the world. At least… that’s what they thought.

“Hey newbie! Pass me some napkins, some old fart dropped his coffee!”

Mistin sighed, morning rush was not easy for today to say the least, Mistin then looked at Miles from where they were at after restocking some lids, they’re morning annoyance, Miles always tends to slack more than work. If only his efforts to skip work were actually put into his actual job. Mistin unfortunately has to deal with him till their shift is over.

“Miles if you saw the mess you clean it up. Haven’t we been over this?”

Mistin says while now looking over the pastries to see if they were ether burn or didn’t look good to eat for the customers.

“Oh c’mon! My legs are sore from stock this morning, can’t you do me this one favor?”

Miles tried to pull puppy dog eyes on them, but Mistin didn’t falter, they only let out a small laugh. Closing the case and looking over the discards pile to count how many to throw out.

“I’m sorry, but I’m not the one who’s charged 20 dollars extra to customers.”

“That was-“

“For the 3rd time in one day Miles.”

Miles rolls his eyes.

“Now-“

“Clean up the mess Miles.”

Suddenly Haley showed up with Mistin’s Brother Creed, who had given the mop and bucket to Miles. Miles sighs and goes to clean it up. Mistin smirks as they then look towards the culprit who interrupted them. Haley their shift manager and main person to talk to when the shift feels its lasting too long.

“Wow Hal, you’re way ahead of me today aren’t ya?”

“Meh, you work long enough with Miles you get to know how he is.”

Haley takes a burnt croissant and picks at it. Mistin doesn’t bat an eye but still counts the burnt croissant as a discarded food to toss. If only Miles wasn’t in charge of making them, then they wouldn’t have got burnt.

“So how’s the job treating you now?” Hal asked as it has been a month, Mistin has been in the city for 3 years, they’ve left jobs they’ve quit jobs, it’s unbelievable to see that they’re finally having a peaceful one for once. They didn’t complain of course, since this is the life they wanted.

“It’s nice actually, not to mention I don’t have to deal with many people who don’t have a sense of entitlement all the time.”

“Oh right you used to work in that one clothing store with all those entitled old men and women.”Creed chimed in, Mistin couldn’t help but feel tired thinking back upon that job, yes the pay was good, but not for their mental health and respect of customers. Hal laughed a bit, as Creed carried on about how they wouldn’t survive working in such an environment.

“Mama! Look it’s Binary Star!”

As the kid said excitedly Mistin looked at the TV, the news shows the top hero Binary Star. Mistin scoffed at the sight of Binary Star, they always had a bad feeling about Hero’s. Especially top tier Hero’s, their father warned that not all Hero’s are trustworthy. So Mistin took his words to heart and always stood firm against them, even if they were to meet one up close in person, they’d take every word with a grain of salt. Especially since hearing about one mission going wrong due to the big shot on screen, not only was the person telling them the experience of the encounter, their fathers words rang through they’re mind just hearing the story. To meet a hero at the wrong time is a 50/50, Mistin knew there would be a chance they’d get caught as a villain, however… it never happened. It felt off… but thanked whoever was watching over them they didn’t get caught.

Mistin shakes their head to snap themselves out of the past. Going back to work, everywhere they go they see Binary Star’s face plastered everywhere. Every time they look at those red eyes, they feel like something bad could happen. Though the public practically calls his name in praise, they couldn’t help but wonder…. Was he really as he is on TV? However knew it was false, remembering the story of his encounter with their past crew mates. Mistin needed to move past that, the past is the past.

“That guy gives me the creeps.”

Creed snaps Mistin out of their thoughts as they go over stock again.

“He’s a hero, but I get it. He probably has a lot of skeletons in his closet.”

Hal chimed in. Mistin was the one always questioning….. who was the hero underneath that mask? Whoever he was, they most definitely didn’t want to meet him. Who knows, he could be worse without the mask. An arrogant asshole, or an entitled rich man. Heros nowadays are held in high regard, to talk badly about them in public is considered suspicious at worse if not odd. Seeing some comments online though…. Some people have something to say about it. Steal Sharif, Blaze, Hell even the big shot himself. No information on his background, only told public information and nothing more…. The government seems so strict about keeping it under wraps. Mistin even tried once and ended up on a dead end.

“Excuse me? Can I order?”

Mistin turned to see a guy behind them, oh… they were deep in thought again… Mistin nodded and pointed towards the cash register, the customer got the memo and Hal and Creed got back to work.

“Alright! Sorry about that, how may I help?”

The guy looks like he isn’t ready to talk to them, did he need more time to think? Though a bit annoyed, Mistin understands not everyone’s ready when going up to the counter, some people have a hard time speaking to others to.

“Hey if you need more time that’s perfectly fine.”

Mistin can understand when someone is trying. Especially when it comes down to communication. However hopes it doesn’t take up their entire shift…

“Ok, um… I’ll take a black coffee, to go please.”

‘Just that?’

“Is that all?”

He looked at Mistin as if it was a trick question, making Mistin feel awkward for some reason. Mistin however waited patiently in case he wanted something else.

“No, that’s it.”

Mistin nodded and typed that in the register.

“Ok that’s gonna be three dollars flat-”

He hands them a five as they finished they’re sentence. They took the five and got the change needed.

“Here you-“

“Keep it.”

He then goes to wait at a table. Mistin looks at the change and then to him.

‘Huh…. Not much of a talker. I can understand that.’

Mistin put the money in the register and goes to make the coffee. Meanwhile the stranger seemed awkward around them and looked like he didn’t want to be disturbed. Mistin gotten used to how to make the coffee if needed in a rush hour. When their brother was done with the easy coffee. Mistin looked over at the man, noticing he was staring over in their direction. However the way he looked away so fast meant he was actually looking over at them.. or maybe Mistin’s mind is playing tricks. The way he acted with them, it was kind of cute. Mistin knew it wasn’t necessary, at all… but…. They took out their marker and thought of something to write. They looked over at the guy, and noticed his eyes, were they a dark brown? No, they were pitch black…. Like a…. That’s it! Mistin quickly writes down the message and starts walking over to give his coffee. Trying to offer they’re best smile.

“Here you go sir, one Black coffee!”

With that he reached out his hand to take it, while taking it from them, they’d fingertips touch, something felt flattering when doing so, they looked at the guy, now black coffee in hand. They couldn’t help but find him a bit familiar. Strange… look at him up close… wait a second….

“Hey… have I-?”

“AGH! Miles!”

Before Mistin could ask they see that Miles had accidentally bumped into Creed who had a small box of sleeves for coffee. When Mistin turned back to where the man was he was practically out the door already, for a split second, they could’ve sworn he looked back, making Mistin feel a bit delusional at the thought.

Mistin decided to go help their brother, to try and get that guy out of their mind, it was strange… this familiar feeling…. They didnt know him.. yet, he’s able to stir something in them? Something about that guy if off….

They’ll need to keep they’re guard up around him if he comes by.

Chapter 2: The man with Dark Eyes

Summary:

Mistin while meeting the man who they swore is familiar, decided to get to know him more. It wouldn’t hurt to know why they think they’ve seen him before. Or… would it?

Chapter Text

Another day, another shift at Waning Crescent. A job where Mistin felt like a normal everyday person. However they couldn’t help but think back to that guy….The man who had those dark eyes, they felt familiar. Why was he familiar to them? That was a question they’ve been asking all night long, well for a bit of the night. No sight of him for for now is probably good anyways at least for them.

“Hey Mistin, you ok?”

A familiar regular waves their hand infront of Mistin to get they’re attention.

“Oh! Hey Audrey.”

Audrey smiled at Mistin, they always claimed that the place was better than others, because it talked less of hero’s. That and Miles is given something to be occupied with due to the fact he one time thought she was the hero known as Sparks. It was clear to say she was uncomfortable. However she never minded that, although she did seem to not like being a hero look a like. Mistin didn’t blame her for wanting somewhere to go without the mention of heros around. Miles still thinks she’s secretly a hero, although Audrey does look a bit like Sparks, Audrey themselves even said she does look like Sparks but would run for the hills if she were to encounter an alien. However the thoughts of what she does still linger, she’s definitely not a model even though her skin looks nice along with the whole face and body, perhaps a quiet librarian? She’s always seen reading books when coming here, or perhaps-

“I’ll take my usual caramel latte.”

“Right, you’re usual.”

Sometimes they were just glad some regulars weren’t always expecting them to read their mind when asking for their usual, too many regulars in the area in the city now a days… Audrey paid for her drink and received her change. However she seemed to notice the change in Mistin’s behavior. “You ok Mistin? You’ve spaced out two times already.” “Oh sorry about that… just had a…. Interesting night last night.” ‘A night of wondering about that guy.’ Audrey seemed to understand not to push further, they weren’t that close in talking terms, for example the first time she walked in, she looked like she could be scared off easily as if someone was out to get her. However after awhile she got more comfortable and started talking to them and started to talk to them while her drink was prepared. She was definitely more of a quiet type in public… in Mistin’s opinion anyway.

“So how your shift going?”

“It’s going ok, if you count the guy who came in who complained about Miles charging him 20 dollars the other day.”

Audrey coughed, caught off guard by the sudden talk of Miles doing that, Mistin laughed a bit mentally… she never interacted with Miles after she told Haley that Miles said she was a hero look alike, afterwards talking upon similarities and how she should try putting a mask on to see if she was a said look alike. Leading to a scolding and Audrey feeling a bit of relief… she still keeps her distance from him, hence why Mistin is in charge of the register more often…

“He did that?”

“It’s Miles, he’s practically a guy who-“

“Caramel latte!”

Hal interrupted as Audrey blinked and just went to grab it. She didn’t make eye contact, looking a bit embarrassed, being caught gossiping.

“Thank you. Uh, do you want to keep talking or-”

Mistin shakes their head. If they talk about Miles more, their afraid that they may go into a rant about him.

“Nah, you enjoy your drink.”

Hal then leans on the counter, looking at Audrey. She could feel their gaze on them making her a bit nervous.

“Not in a rush today?”

“Hm? Oh! No, I got the day off.”

Audrey laughs a bit, Mistin thinks back to the times when she was in a rush to work.

“You were always called in at the weirdest of times too.”

Mistin says as Audrey chokes again while drinking her drink. Coughing soon rushing to respond… a little too quickly… what was Hal up to now?

“Hehe! Well you know how it is! Bosses wanting to put more hours am I right? Hehe….”

“Uh huh…. Well Audrey it’s good to see you’re finally able to catch a break.”

Hal said as it was clear they understood her position. However Mistin noticed their skeptical gaze, Hal was suspicious of something… They remembered when they first interacted with Audrey, even after Miles make them uncomfortable, maybe the idea of them being a look alike was something to look into… however even so, it’s not like Audrey has any bad intentions… they haven’t done anything remotely tied to something serious or concerning. At least… not yet…

“Yeah. I’m able to just relax and enjoy the cafe too. I rarely get to enjoy stuff like this.”

Audrey says as she seems more comfortable talking about having a day off rather than work. Honestly relatable, she always seems more relaxed around here.

Soon Audrey would go sit down by a nearby table. She’d end up taking out a book. She did talk about catching up upon their books they’re interested in. Mistin would smile and then look at the door, thinking of the guy with the dark eyes. They were thinking about him again. Why was he familiar? Did they see him while walking to work one time? Were they once a customer they knew? Why were they familiar?…

Wait….

Why are they thinking about him?

‘Come on Mistin, the guy could be with someone, let alone married…. Or worse… a murder and I’m his next victim or something- calm down… your overthinking… but why is he so important?’

“Oh it’s this prick again….”

Hal would mumble as Mistin looked up and saw where their eyes were. On the Tv was a familiar face. The top Hero Binary Star, once again on the news. Mistin could change the channel, but the customers would complain about it. Hal then took the remote.

“Let’s see what they’re saying about this guy.”

Hal didn’t sound too pleased. Mistin grew a bit worried, but now turning their attention to the TV.

“We are here at the scene of Binary Star! Where we are able to finally have an interview with our number one hero and beloved savior of the city!”

Mistin rolled their eyes at this, they wouldn’t say beloved in their book, but they continued to listen in.

“You are known to have a multiple amount of abilities, everyone could notice! Especially with those Diamond melting eyes!”

Mistin couldn’t help but laugh a bit. Diamond? It’s clear his eyes were red, why not go with something like Ruby melting eyes? But they guessed it’s cause diamonds were more favored.

“How do you feel of being the city’s number one hero?”

“Well I gotta say, I’m flattered… but strange they are not wrong!”

The hero tilts his head giving an animated wink to the interviewer. Mistin couldn’t help but try to hold in in their laughter at how cringy this was.

He then turns to the camera pointing directly towards the audience.

“No Villain can hide under the thick veil of darkness. Not while I’m around! Against the dusk of their crimes, the shining light will always prevail, bringing them to justice!”

The hero then turned his point into a thumbs up, his smile so wide it instinctively made Mistin rub their own jaw. Do all heros need to wear a smile like that all the time? It sounded like torture, Mistin couldn’t help but let out a light laugh though.

“It has been said you’ve been born with this special talent, indicating from birth that you were an ability holder.”

“Why… yes, that’s right! When I first opened my eyes it gave the nurses quite the scare!”

Audrey scoffed and seemed annoyed. Mistin could see the irritation on their face. Did they not like hero’s?
Mistin decided they heard enough and took the remote from Hal and turned off the tv.

“I think that’s enough about hero’s for today.”

“It’s all bullshit.”

Hal muttered. As Mistin then noticed Hal’s expression.

“Hal?”

“All that Heroic stuff! It’s all just bullshit! Since when did murders get glorified!”

Hal looked more pissed off, Creed quickly gone up to them to talk them down due to there being many people still here.

Mistin sighed.

“Rough day?”

That voice! Mistin looks at the direction where the voice came from. Those familiar dark eyes, it was him!

“Oh hi! Hello, I didn’t see you there.”

“Uh huh, I would prefer binary star over me too.”

Mistin was caught off guard by that, if not embarrassed for the misunderstanding.

“What? No no no, I don’t like him at all. In fact I’d prefer if people talked about him less.”

‘Why did that sound offensive?’

“Really?”

Mistin sighed, looking at the turned off TV and then towards the stranger in front of them.

“Let’s just say I don’t really enjoy Heroes all that much.” He then nods and smiles. Somehow Mistin felt comfortable talking with him.

“Why not tell me what you think?”

“About…” Mistin points at the tv a bit awkwardly. He lets out a light laugh. He nods, Mistin laughed a bit, the stranger raised a brow at their laugher.

“Well wouldn’t that be something? I don’t even know your name yet, yet you’re wanting to know my opinion?”

His face went a bit pink for a second, but then he clears his throat. Mistin thought it was a cute reaction.

“It’s Ray.”

Mistin smile’s finally knowing the name of the stranger. Ray…. It was just a name, however would a name such as Ray sound so pleasant to the ear?

“So still wanna keep the option to yourself or?”

‘Should I really tell him my opinion?’

Mistin bit their lip in thought. Then decide to tell him the truth. Theres a chance they won’t run into him again anyway, along with the fact he might be a potential friend to talk to.

“I find them…. Very difficult to understand… like they claim to be all for justice and stuff…. But….”

Ray listened carefully. Mistin couldn’t help but feel safe about expressing their opinion with him, it was strange. A bit… unsettling even…

“I feel like there’s more going on than just smiles and glamour. I’d rather prefer the everyday hero, like firefighters, police, or just an average person. Ya know?”

Ray nodded. Mistin was starting to think they were too honest.

“I’d bet they had the interview scripted.”

Mistin looked at Ray and Ray looked at them. Mistin couldn’t help but laugh a bit awkwardly. Ray smiled at this.

“So um, should I take your order now or, are you going to stall me from work more?”

Mistin said in a joking manner. Ray just smiles.

“Well that and I’d appreciate another word of encouragement on the sleeve please.”

“Huh?”

“Did you think I didn’t notice?”

“Oh! I uh… didn’t think you’d actually notice.”

Ray says while Mistin remembers writing down ‘have a nice day!’ Along with ‘Nice eyes.’ Without further context. Mistin felt their face heat up in embarrassment. ‘Of course I had to forget I wrote that… of course…’ They heard Ray chuckle a bit, what was he laughing at? “It’s fine if you don’t remember, it actually helped me out a bit.”

“Well I’ll be sure to add another one for you… per your request that is… hehe.”

They see him smile, wait is he trying to flirt with them? No, no… they can’t overthink, this is their second time meeting this guy.

“Black coffee, just like last time.”

“Again huh? Are you planning on going for a streak?”

Ray shrugged. Mistin puts in the order.

“Well I’ve never really drank coffee all that much before.”

“Really? What got you into caffeine?”

Ray shrugged again. This time he leaned on the counter, touching Mistin’s fingertips again. Mistin felt that same feeling when they touched the first time. Mistin looked at him.

“Just wanted to try something new. Especially since a barista decided to tell me to have a nice day.”

Mistin felt they’re face warm up, they then clear their throat. Trying to bring themselves back to reality. Making them wonder why his touch for them made them feel like that. Bringing their hand away.

“Well! I’ll be sure to get it done as soon as possible! Hehe!”

Ray smiled as he paid for his drink, Mistin was a little distracted this time, the feeling of his touch lingered on their fingertips, causing them to feel flattered. But they remained themselves he’s only a customer for now! And shouldn’t flirt with customers at work. When done they thought of what to write. When they did they thought of his eyes again. This time they can confirm they were definitely black. Mistin smiled and wrote down what they thought in the moment.

“one black coffee and some encouragement for the day.”

Ray took the coffee from them and looked at the writing, he seemed a bit caught off guard. He looked at them and back at the writing.

“Um… did I spell something wrong or?”

“No no it’s just… hehe…”

He rubbed the back of his neck, was he blushing?

“I never thought you’d like my eyes like that.”

Mistin sighed, relieved they didn’t offend him. When Ray left Mistin couldn’t help but smile. The writing on the sleeve was what they thought of his eyes.

‘Is it so wrong to just say “do your best”? Or was the compliment too much? His eyes do remind me of the night sky without any stars, not that it’s a bad thing… it can be beautiful at times… should I explain that him?’

Though kind of cringy, Mistin did like how sometime the night sky comforts them, but when they did look into his eyes… it’s like he’s the one comforting them this whole time… it was an odd feeling… Mistin soon went back to work and couldn’t help but smile at the interaction. Ray sounded like a nice name to… they wondered if they were going to see him again… if they do, perhaps outside of work? That’s when they noticed one familiar spot that was now empty. ‘Huh… did Audrey leave while I was talking to Ray?’

Chapter 3: A Silent Confession

Summary:

Mistin while during their shift met Ray again, after the second one finding his scars quite alarming, how did he get them? Hard manual labor? No… no it couldn’t be that… but wait… what this feeling of watchful eyes on them? Who could it be? Wait…. Who’s calling….?

Chapter Text

Mistin’s shift was nearly over, Mistin decided to take care of cleaning up the tables. While doing so, Mistin couldn’t help but enjoy how the cafe was quiet for a bit, the sun coming from the window, felt like a warm blanket you could sleep in. This peace was exactly what they wanted. The escape from a villain lifestyle that was chaos to them. They wanted the moment to last for a while, before someone touched their shoulder. Fight or flight instincts kicked in and they ended up grabbing the persons wrist in a firm grip.

“Woah.”

Ray looked at Mistin, seemingly a bit surprised. Mistin felt like they just got caught red handed doing something they shouldn’t.

‘Shit-‘

“Sorry, you just caught me off guard.”

Mistin quickly let go of him, they are so lucky there are only a small amount of people in the cafe right now.

“No it’s fine, it’s good to know you’re always on your guard. Never know what could happen in the city.”

Mistin smiled sheepishly, they felt like dying after that. More over exposed, even if he has no idea of their past wrong doings.

“It’s been a week since you last came in, has work caught up with you?”

Ray didn’t look like he wanted to talk about work, relatable. He lets out a sigh while rubbing the back of his neck.

“Pretty much, but I’d prefer to talk to my favorite barista right now though.”

‘Favorite? Me?’

“Favorite? Surely you can do better than that to get a free coffee from me.”

Mistin teased, they felt flattered at his comment, he was definitely trying to flirt with them wasn’t he? Mistin then laughed a bit. They can hear him chuckle.

“Who said I was?”

“i only see you once a week, also not even confirmed each other as friends yet.”

Ray plays a face of betrayal, causing them to laugh.

“Wow, ways not to be friend zoned, not be considered a friend.”

“Hey- haha, I’m only kidding.”

“I know, but I can understand why. However I’m paying for my drink regardless of flirting.”

Mistin rolled their eyes as they saw how silly the situation was. However knowing that he could possibly still be on his break for all they know or at least going to start work soon.

“So, you’re still going to work after I give you your drink?”

Ray sighed and nodded. Confirming their suspicions.

“Needy juniors…”

“Right.”

Mistin then got to work on his coffee as soon as he paid. Mistin then gave him his coffee.

“Drinking only black coffee can kill you, ya know that? Mr. Ray.”

Ray chuckled at the ‘Mr. Ray’ part.

“Well at least it’s made by you then, barista.”

“I have a name ya know.”

“Mistin.”

“Ah ah! Name tag does not count. See me outside then it’ll count.”

Ray smiles, as Mistin laughs a bit.

“You bratty barista.”

“You know it.”

Mistin smiled as they then gone back to cleaning the tables.

“How much time you got left?”

“Probably…. 15 minutes.”

“Wow and you spent some time on me, I’m very flattered.”

“Well, you’re a customer to. So I have to.”

Mistin couldn’t help but find themselves having fun while cleaning up the tables that shift. When Ray left… they couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed the conversation was over. When they clocked out they got their stuff and bit both Hal and Creed goodbye. Mistin was waiting at a sidewalk to walk across the street. They felt a familiar watchful eyes on them… Mistin couldn’t help but look. They were on guard for him…. Glaring in every direction, they then walked across the street and took a longer way home. When they lost the watchful eyes they went straight home, locking the doors and windows. There was no way he found them…… right?

Mistin went to go take a shower to clear they’re mind.
Revealing their past scars from when they used their ability… however one on their lower stomach really stood out. They remembered the day they got it…

“HEY!! LEAVE HIM ALONE!”

The young Mistin was alone with the ‘innocent’ boy, their older brother being occupied by their mother. in the neighborhood it was considered that older kids picking on the younger kids as, kids being kids… Mistin got stabbed by the older kid by a pocket knife… it was deep enough they had to go to the hospital to get stitches. The older kid got away with it, while Mistin’s father was furious, along with their older brother… however they’re mother and the ‘innocent’ boy seemed calm, she whispered something into his ear, only making out a ‘they will pay’ from their mother… the parents and the older kid were missing. The ‘innocent’ boy checked on Mistin during recovery, and their mother seemed less worried. One day while in the backyard with their innocent brother, they saw something shiny….

A piece of jewelry their mother never owned….

Their mother who was behind them, gently patted their head as they took the earring from their little hand. At that moment they’re mother seemed so calm…
She placed a finger to her lips.

“Keep this between us.. this will be our little secret…”

Later when growing up… they realized the truth…
They felt sick… what could she have possibly convinced him to do back then? Was she the reason or…. Was it meant for him to go down this path…

They got into the shower, they didn’t want to think of it anymore… They then realized they needed groceries after they were done and checking for what to eat, of course they forgot… but it’s not like it was on purpose. They felt it… they’re eyes… a discomfort they never wanted to feel again… Now they’re definitely going to keep an eye out, even bring a pocket knife with them just in case. After checking the locks and making sure there’s no way for outsiders to get in. Soon they tired and successfully went to bed, later feeling a light breeze… They could’ve sworn they locked it…

Maybe they forgot?

‘Is the lock broken?…. It looks fine… god who’s knows who could’ve gotten in if this wasn’t closed…’

They then closed it and went back to bed, after making sure it’s locked. Not knowing the red eyes watching from on top of the building next to them….

The next day they took orders, made coffee, and made sure to get their daily tasks done. Mistin sighed as the moment of peace washed over.

Only to hear the bell chime.

‘God damn it.’

“Hi! Welcome to-“

They saw the familiar figure. Mistin then smiled.

“Hey Ray. Thought I’d see you next week.”

Ray smiled as he walks up to the counter. Though Mistin expected him to come in next, they’re glad regardless. Work was getting pretty slow lately.

“What can I say, I can never truly stay away.”

Mistin laughed a bit at that. Grabbing his usual size for his cup.

“Black coffee, per usual?”

“Actually, may I try the special?”

Mistin looks at him, smiling a bit mischievously.

“Oh? What’s the special occasion?”

“Is there really a need for one? What if I just wanna try something new?”

Mistin rolled their eyes.

“Well I’ll make a bet with you. I bet you’re going to hate it.”

“Oh? And why’s that?”

Mistin smiled at him.

“The black coffee got to your brain so much you won’t wanna drink it ever again.”

Ray chuckled at their reasoning, Mistin themselves even found it ridiculous. However a win is a win if their right.

“Well then, consider it a challenge.”

Mistin giggled a bit. Going to make it.

“Don’t I have to pay?”

“It’s on me! I bet it’s going to be a waste of money anyway.”

Ray sighed as he smiled at them, sauntering off to go wait for his drink.
Mistin could feel his eyes as they made the mint latte. When they were done they came out with it sure he wouldn’t like it.

“Hm.”

“Well? Are you not going to.. give it a chance?”

“No I’m going to.”

“Alright. Go ahead then.”

Ray mixed it a bit, he drinks a good amount and sallows it. He then looks at Mistin with a winning grin.

“It’s good.”

“Well I’ll be damned. You trying a mint latte. Not even I would touch it.”

“Really?”

“Eh… too much mint for me.”

Ray let out a light laugh as Mistin smiled. Ray’s phone then buzzed. He grimaced.

“Work?”

“…”

Mistin expected this. They presented a to go cup and lid.

“Here, I was guessing you wouldn’t stick around for so long…”

Ray seemed surprised at this. He took the cup and lid from them.

“It’s tastes better when presented.”

“That so?”

“Mhm.”

While Ray carefully poured the latte into the cup, Mistin couldn’t help but feel disappointed that’s he’s leaving… they were hoping that the conversation would be longer. Mistin then sighed at they began to walk away… however they can hear their heart pounding in their ears, the thought of Ray flirting them still remained fresh in their mind. Was he actually interested?

Without warning the tripped on nothing, they were sure they were going to hit the floor, however felt an arm around their waist.

‘Ray?’

That’s when they noticed his arm, scars, cuts, holes, and more… some fresh, some new. What on earth?

“Try not to -“

‘These can’t be from his job right?’

Ray stopped talking, as if he noticed something.

“Mistin?”

“Yes?”

Ray looked at them, a bit concerned, Mistin gave a look of both concern and skepticism. Ray shakes his head.

“Nothing.. I’ll see you around..”

He helps them up before finally leaving.

“Right… bye.”

‘Those scars can’t be just from manual labor right? Could he be a hero? If so… is it possible he knows who i was in the villain world?’

Later when they said they’re goodbye and clocked out. Mistin went to get groceries. Grabbing basic necessities, fruit, meat, along with some other things. They can’t really live off of Mac n cheese or mashed potatoes. When done they sighed as they were able to get this out of the way. If they missed something, they’ll get it tomorrow.
As they headed home, their phone kept buzzing. They kept ignoring it but it soon got more and more irritating after they kept calling them.
Mistin finally had enough. Taking they’re phone out and that’s when they felt the familiar watchful gaze… this phone number… no… it couldn’t… they made sure all they’re tracks were wiped away… they knew they had to answer…

“Hello?”

“Dusk!~”

‘Double vision… this snake…’

“Who is this?”

‘Maybe if I just-‘

“Oh don’t act coy… honey.. I would know you’re beautiful voice from anywhere.~”

‘No choice but to face the music now…’

“What… do you want…”

A thick hatred in Mistin’s voice was made clear. Double couldn’t help but laugh. They hated that laughter, especially since they used to enjoy it… when it wasn’t so…. Cruel… if only he didn’t go straight to delulu land after rejecting him.

“You know what I want… honey…”

“I’m not going back.”

Mistin said right as he finished his sentence. Causing him to laugh again.

“Oh Mist! You never fail to surprise me.”

“I’m not scared of you all because you beat one of MY friends into unrecognizable flesh. So let me tell you this Double Vision.”

Mistin let out all their anger on him. No matter how crazed or powerful he was.

“You wont get me back alive, come after me and you’ll end up with me dead on your doorstep. Because I would rather die than be near you. You got that?”

Mistin could practically sense the smile he has right about now.

“Well.. one thing is for sure….”

The silence blankets the call, Mistin ready to face him off head on. They were never afraid, they left because it was better for their family to be safe.

“I’ll be the one who kills you… I look forward to seeing you again… Along with your dear older brother.”

With that Mistin hung up, more pissed off than ever, more at themselves than him…. That ‘innocent’ boy was gone… he was no longer the man they knew. They hated the fact they called him friend, they hated how much he changed…… a part of them still hoped he wasn’t this way but he was on full display… they felt disgusted… They looked around, now ready to face anything, they tried to put their phone in their bag but it tumbled out.

‘Shit!’

It tumbled to a strangers shoes. Mistin, from where they stood looked up from their fallen phone to see a familiar pair of eyes…

“Ray…?”

Chapter Text

Ray and Mistin were walking along side each other, a small space between them. It was silent, too silent. Mistin didn’t trust it… they kept looking around as to make sure nobody was going to come out and surprise them… Double was a huge threat to everything they’ve worked hard to achieve.. did they take they’re peaceful life for granted? Were they meant to stay in the world of chaos known as the villain world…? Forever….?

“Hey.”

“Hm!”

“You alright? You seem a bit… tense.”

What should Mistin say? They barely know Ray, and yet he’s being used as a shield for now… Mistin felt bad for doing so.. but what choice do they have? They can’t risk things… not now while Double could possibly be near. Their ability vs his, most likely double is the winner. ‘Damn it… why do I have to have an ability that both hurts me and is painfully slow….’ Even thinking back to when Ray came around luckily…

“Ray?”

Ray picks up Mistin’s phone for them. Handing it to them. They didn’t expect to see Ray outside of work.

“You dropped this.”

“Oh, um thank you…”

Mistin takes their phone. Ray notices the bags they were carrying. One being on the ground.

“That’s a lot of… stuff, want me to help?”

“I don’t- that’s-“

Ray without their proper answer, Ray picked up a light bag that had less food, he seemed surprised, he looked at Mistin.

“Um, Ray…”

They held the heavier one, Ray looked genuinely embarrassed, Mistin couldn’t help but laugh. Ray just shrugged and laughed a bit as well.

“Here let me-“

“Nuh uh! I’m carrying this one, you choose your bag.”

Mistin teased, Ray chuckled at this. However the looming feeling of Double watching them lingers. Mistin couldn’t help but feel like they’re not out of the chaos just yet. Mistin kept looking behind them as that’s where they felt the lingering gaze.

“Mist-“

Mistin suddenly took his hand and started walking, catching Ray off guard.

“This way is where I’m going, you are going this way to right?”

Mistin looked at Ray firmly, hoping he would catch what they were throwing at him. He finally caught what they were trying to do. Ray clears his throat as to give confirmation.

“Yeah, let’s get going.”

Mistin was relieved, if Ray was a hero like Mistin suspected then they hoped he would be able to handle Double right? However if not they could be putting him in serious shit for no reason except for a simple mistake, a misunderstanding! But all they know is that they weren’t ready right now, yes they were ready to face off the bastard that traumatized their brother…. They will never forgive him for everything else he could’ve done while they’re back was turned… right now they’re risking someone else because of him. They don’t have 100% of the evidence, they only have a sliver, they weren’t born yesterday, those scars were ether a daydream Or because he’s been through shit a hero has gone through, they needed more proof… concrete evidence…

’God if only i can just get them off my back… that would be really nice…’

“You ok?”

They snapped out of their thoughts as he questioned them. Their arms wrapped around their body, as if you comfort themselves. They only look down as they both continue to walk down the dimly lit sidewalk.

“You don’t need to answer, however I am worried about you.”

“Really? And you consider a minimum wage barista a person to worry about?”

Ray only ruffled their hair, Mistin not expecting such physical contact from him. They felt their face heat up against the cold night air.

“But right now you’re not just a barista, you’re simply Mistin, a person.”

Hearing him say that, they didn’t know if they were supposed to be offended or flattered. However.. their body language seemed less tense, Mistin felt comfort in hearing such words. He saw them as an actual person. They can practically feel their face heat up a bit, however shake it off as they wanted to get to know him more first.

‘No romantic feelings now Mistin, don’t rush into something that could possibly be…. A problem…’

Ray smiled at them, and Mistin smiles back, tucking a strand of hair behind their ear, they did need a hair cut, however now wasn’t the time to worry about such small things.

“Ahem! Um, my apartment is this way.”

“Got it.”

Mistin kept walking along with Ray, soon Mistin’s hand was hurting from carrying the heavy bag of groceries. Ray noticed. He raised the light bag a bit.

“Trade?”

Mistin looked and realized that it would help, especially for their hand. They sigh and give him the heavy bag and got the lighter one. Ray smiled at his success to finally switch helping them out. Mistin’s hand felt a bit better with the lighter bag.

“You know you really didn’t have to help me, you could’ve possibly gone home already.”

Ray shake’s his head, a small smile upon their lips.

“Well considering how far away your apartment is, I’m glad I did, especially since you seemed to hate carrying this one after awhile.”

‘Damn right…. It was starting to hurt…. Still feels awkward, especially considering how… we’re not that close… At least not yet….’

Mistin’s eyes narrowed, did he really take the bag just to make fun of them? This guy….

“But… if I’m being completely honest, I actually don’t like the thought of you going home alone during the night. It’s dangerous when it comes down to a city full of people.”

Ray looked around, Mistin got a bit nervous.

“look…. I really don’t want you to think you owe me anything, I just wanted to help out.”

Mistin was silent for a bit.

“Well… thank you, I appreciate the help.”

Ray smiled. Mistin smiled back. Continuing their conversation on small things such as hobbies, life, or basics of things they find ether annoying or just like. Soon arriving at the apartment. Learning more about Ray felt nice and him willing to learn more about them is actually very appreciated in their perspective. He’s making an effort to help ease any awkwardness or discomfort by asking basic things about them. Even distracting them from their worries right now long enough to feel the lingering watchful eyes were now off of them a few moments ago. Learning he wanted to adopt a cat but he couldn’t due to his work, to telling them he enjoys cooking, for it’s something he’s able to make with his own hands. Mistin even sharing at how they enjoy making things on paper, a once blank space then having a scene or something that is fleshed out is something Mist enjoys when making something.

“Oh we’re here…”

“I see.”

An awkward silence lays thick between the two. That’s when Mistin takes out their phone.

“Um is it possible to get your number?”

Ray looked at them confused, Mistin felt awkward at that look, did he think they were trying to flirt or something?

“It’s not like-“

“Don’t you already have it?”

“What?”

“The sleeve I gave you along with the 50, didn’t you get it?”

Mistin stood there for a second… processing what he said…

‘WAIT DID HE SAY A 50?!’

“When did you?”

“When you fell and I caught you, I may or may not have slipped a 50 along with my number.”

“Wait, are you talking about my apron pocket?”

“Yeah?”

“Ray I don’t check my apron all the time. Not to mention I was distracted by-… something…”

Ray faceplams, making Mistin feel bad.

“I’m sorry-“

Wait… that sound… was he… Laughing?

“Hey, what’s so funny?”

“Nothing it’s just, I should’ve just gave it to you instead I guess. Haha.”

Mistin’s face flushed pink, their embarrassed expression clear to see. Especially due to the fact that they didn’t know he had paid for the drink with the 50 and given his number in the process… how come they didn’t notice? Ray then sighs smiling at Mistin, then patting their head again, making Mistin feel the warm fuzzy feeling in their chest.

“But I appreciate you being the one offering it to me, you probably wouldn’t want anything to do with me otherwise.”

“That’s not true, sure I would be a bit miffed… but… I’m actually glad I didn’t find it, I got to know you a bit more this way…”

“Hm.”

“That and it would’ve probably been more awkward…”

Ray chuckled a bit. Bringing out his phone, Mistin giving them their number. Ray even sending a text to verify it.

“Well um, I look forward to talking to you more.”

Before Ray could speak his phone buzzed. He rushed to ignore the call only hear it buzz again.

“Sorry, work has some needy juniors.”

“No it’s fine, I understand.”

“Oh right, you’re groceries.”

Mistin took the heavy bag from him. Smiling in appreciation for helping. His phone buzzed again, this time he was more annoyed.

“Excuse me for a second.”

Mistin nodded, trying their best not to listen in on the conversation, when Ray put the phone to his ear. However a certain part stuck out to them.

“What? Are you serious, don’t you have anyone else? Am I your only-…. Option or something? I in fact do have life outside of work.”

Mistin couldn’t help but think about the pause in his sentence… why did he say option instead of what- wait… this also lines up with Mistin’s theory of him being a possible hero…

‘No! Mistin he could probably also be very busy he has to strictly keep work related things to his work life, separation of work and personal life is more important than people think. Especially for mental and physical health. Don’t assume things, you still need to take other things into account before coming to an informed opinion.’

When Ray was done talking to whoever he was talking to. He looked at Mistin and smiled.

“Sorry about that, I really don’t like when work tries to call me in during my day off.”

“I get completely get it, but it seemed pretty important.”

“They’ll figure something out. I’ve got plans anyway.”

“Really?”

“Mhm.”

“And what would those be?”

“Helping out a certain familiar person.”

Mistin couldn’t help but laugh a bit at that. Causing Ray to smile a bit. Ray turns to leave, however now that Mistin was off work, they decided not to end the conversation just yet.

“Hey Ray.”

“Hm?”

“If you’d like we could hang out outside while drinking tea, sure it’s not black coffee but… it would be nice to have company for awhile.”

Ray looked surprised almost dropping his phone.

“Ray?”

“Sorry um, I wasn’t expecting that.”

“It’s fine, at least I’m not inviting you in my apartment. Not until I feel it’s ok.”

Ray nods in agreement.

“Oh let me quickly put these away-“

A loud explosion was heard in the distance, startled Mistin and Ray looking behind him. The familiar smoke of when aliens had come to destroy what’s in their path…

“Aliens…”

The word came out of Mistin’s mouth before they even thought of speaking. Ray sighed in a frustrated manner.

“Goddamnit….”

Mistin looked at Ray as he muttered the curse, about to check if he’s ok, when his phone buzzed. Ray picked up the call.

“Just two? Fine, I’m on my way, but you owe me.”

Ray hangs up, looking at Mistin. Mistin sigh’s understanding that he won’t be able to stay for tea. Before Ray could speak Mistin stopped him.

“Don’t worry about it.”

Mistin held out their phone waving it a bit.

“I’ll talk to you later. There’s another time, right?”

Ray gave a small smile.

“Of course..”

Mistin smiled back as Ray prepares to leave.

“I’ll see you next time, Star.”

‘Star?’

With that Ray leaves, Mistin giving a small wave. When they gone into the apartment complex, they put their hand to their chest where they felt that exact warm fuzzy feeling again.

‘Star….’

Mistin smiles as they were only ever called a few things Mist, Honey, and their old name… but… this nickname Ray gave them… it couldn’t help but feel special to them.

‘I hope you call me that again soon… Ray…’

If Ray was a hero like they suspected, they knew the potential dangers that come for him. Wishing for his safety for helping protect everyone. Even if they were meant to not trust hero’s….

—————————————————————————————

“Gah!”

The aliens were definitely tough, Audrey called for back up, for they weren’t expecting two. Where is it when you need it? Noticing some citizens nearby they quickly throw something to distract one of them, luckily it actually works, they run over quickly.

“You alright?”

“Sparks! Thank god!”

“There’s no time, hurry run that way, I’ll keep them distracted while you escape.”

“But-“

The screech of the of the alien rings loudly as Audrey otherwise known as the hero Sparks, knew that meant they were going to come back soon.

“No time. Go!”

With that the two citizens run as Sparks throws something to grab the monster’s attention.

“That’s right over here!”

The loud roar of the aliens, causing Sparks to lead them far from the fleeing people. She was even developing a plan to use her abilities as the monsters grew near to a point they saw apart of rubble where most electricity was. When they got there she stopped and faced the monstrous alien’s ready to attack. Audrey immediately began charging her own ability and then-

BAM!

The plan was immediately ruined due to a hard blow from the reinforcement of Binary Star. Audrey grew annoyed… why is it when they’re about to put her plans into action he comes by and immediately ruins the whole thing…

Binary Star looks at the female hero.

“You called?”

“I didn’t call for you specifically.”

“Oh really?”

“The NAHA make the calls not me.”

Audrey pinched the bridge of her nose in annoyance, as the alien gets up.

“Look we’ll talk later.”

Audrey rushed to go take cause of the alien, since they’re already charged up they might as well attack now. Binary Star tried to stop her but ultimately ended up helping.
After the battle, the young female hero sat down, catching her breath, Binary Star walked up to her. She looks up at him.

“What?”

“Are we not going to talk?”

Audrey sighed, annoyed. Ray crossed his arms annoyed as well.

“What’s your problem with me lately?”

“My problem?”

“Yeah, you seem to have a problem with me.”

“Oh I dunno maybe it’s the fact you’re not capable of properly keeping work out of a personal life.”

“Oh so now you’re complaining about that are you?”

“Yes!”

“Au- Sparks… that was weeks ago.”

“Weeks? Weeks when you basically asked me to help you, out. I appreciate you looking out for me, but if you have to include my personal fucking life into an excuse to go see that person you like, at least notify me first!”

“Sparks-“

“Oh and that other time! Since when did I agree to take that rest of your shift huh?”

“Hey I have a life outside of work.”

“I do too! I’m a person who has reasonability's outside of work, and I have problems I need to handle myself!… do you even know what’s happened for the past week?”

Binary Star looks at Sparks.

“And that is?”

Sparks scoffed, clearly irritated.

“My father is in the hospital, he got into an accident, the past couple of times I went to see him, or tried to see him… do you know what stopped me?”

Binary Star stood there… silently looking at Sparks. He did know, he didn’t even bother to check.

“I was covering your ass… now a days it’s rare to visit him…”

“Well can’t he take care of himself?”

“You think he’s able to afford the surgery that he needs?”

“…”

“Thought so…”

Sparks remained silent trying not to yell as to keep up appearances as the Hero of the Stars and his past sidekick Sparks…. ‘Get along’ oh so smoothly… when in reality it was way different than that. Her father was all she had left close to biological family…. He knew that…. But he never bother to even ask about how they were doing… or if she couldn’t take up a shift because of something important…

“Sparks-“

“Forget it! Look I’m greatful for the extra money it really does help… but… sometimes… I just can’t…”

She then got up and walked off.

“I’ll see you tomorrow….”

Binary Star just stood there, not even trying to reach for her trying to talk to her again… he didn’t know her father got into such an accident. Was this actually true? Or was she lying….? All he ever thought about was seeing Mistin, did he really not bother to ask if Audrey was even able to help out?
He did remember the time he first gone to her for something other than work… She went to Waning Crescent to stay away from Heroes and the NAHA, however he guessed that since he was practically almost there every week it’s become more and more difficult to stay away from such reminders of work… maybe he can make it up to her somehow.

—————————————————————————————

Audrey now out of her Hero uniform ran in the empty hall of the hospital, flowers in hand as a get better soon for her father. She’s so lucky the hospital isn’t closed yet. When she got to the room and opened the door… he wasn’t there….

“Oh are you looking for Mr. Cinder?”

“Ah, yes.. is he alright?”

“Yes, he’s just getting prepared for tomorrow’s surgery. You’re his daughter aren’t you?”

Audrey looks away a bit.

“Well, yeah.. I’m told I look more like my mother.”

The nurse smiles at her.

“He sure is lucky to have such a caring daughter.”

The nurse then walks away, Audrey still standing in the doorway. Walking over to the hospital bed, the side table had enough room for the flowers, she placed the nice flower there. Although she was a hero that was meant to not fear anything… the thing she fears most is losing her only tie to what she knows as her family.

Audrey leaves the hospital still fearing for her life that she could lose her dad.. when she looked up she was surprised to see Ray. She glared at him from where she stood.

“What do you want?”

He tries to walk to her she steps back.

“Audrey, I’m sorry.”

“Sorry? Now you’re sorry?”

“Well it’s not like you told me.”

“You ignored my calls. So I figured you should’ve at least seen the news, Cop in brutal accident… by a villain’s henchmen…”

She looks away trying not to cry, at least not in public…

“Audrey..”

“Did you know I was there… I had to handle that villain on my own… I didn’t know he was even there… that villain was waiting for you. I blame myself for taking that shift without proper backup… but you would’ve probably done it way faster right?”

“Audrey.”

Ray took a breath and looked at her.

“I’m sorry for being an asshole about it… and assuming you could take some of my shifts without notifying you.”

“…”

“I want to make it up to you…”

Audrey was silent… Ray decided not to talk further, deciding that it was up to her if she would forgive him or not.

“Just… call or text me… take your time.”

Ray walks away, without knowing she was looking back towards him, not a single word in mind. Her mind was already filled with emotions that were hard to explain at the moment… she didn’t know wether to be angry or sad right now…

—————————————————————————————

Creed’s shift was rough to say the least, they noted Mistin seemed a bit more tired than usual. Probably doom scrolling again. Yet again, he was glad to have his sibling near. Hearing the door ring he knew it was another customer Mistin can handle…

Soon after while they were bringing out some straws because he knew they were running low in the lobby, that when he noticed the conversation. He looked at the clock.

‘Mistin didn’t clock out?’

That’s strange, Mistin usually clocks out when their shift is over, as in the exact time clock out.

“Hey Mist everything ok?”

“Just some guy-“

“Blaze!”

“Right…. ‘Blaze’ trying to ask me to go with him.”

“If you want I’ll take you out to dinner first, you look starving.”

He winks at Mistin, giving Creed an instant ick. Seriously right in front of him? Wait Mistin was saying no right?

“I’m sorry but I don’t even-“

“Ahem! What’s going on here?”

Was that… Audrey? She hasn’t came in for awhile, she’s here now? Wait does she know this guy?

“Ah heya gorgeous.”

“Luke-“

“It’s blaze sweetheart, I’m going to have to ask you to wait in line.. cause this one over here, I definitely wanna set their world on fire.~”

Mistin was getting more annoyed at this Blaze guy.

“Ok Blaze in afraid that’s not necessary, Mist, do you want to go with him?”

“No.”

“There’s your answer now leave.”

Blaze looked at Audrey, then to Mistin.

“I wanna hear it from them though. What do ya think?”

Mistin’s face had a smile but was full of malice. Creed felt a chill go down his spine. They are definitely going to regret that.

“One moment.”

Mistin…. Goes to the back.. hanging their apron and clocks out. The ‘Blaze’ guy looked as if he’d won. Audrey looked disappointed.

“Shall we get going?”

“We? Who’s we exactly?”

“Wha-?

“Look here ‘Blaze’ it all fun and games when you think you’re top shit… but people like you… piss me off… as if I’d go anywhere with someone like you… you stupid hero wannabe mother fucker.”

Creed’s mouth was a gape while Audrey was laughing.

“Now, why don’t you kindly Fuck Off….”

The patron’s ether laughed a bit or talked in whispers or simply tried to unhear the situation. Mistin holding up their middle finger to him.

The Blaze guy mumbled stuff like “he’s no hero.” And “Ask ‘Ray’ what his abilities are.” Creed didn’t know Ray had abilities, he thinks it that new regular that likes Mistin… Mistin looked puzzled for a second before Audrey went over to them.

“You alright?”

“Yeah… yeah…”

Mistin looked at if something was on their mind…

But he didn’t know what….

Then he saw Ray come in.

Chapter Text

Mistin’s head was wrapped in layers of conflicted thoughts, was Ray a hero? Shouldn’t this mean Blaze basically outs him out of spite? Or was that just a person pretending and making Ray look bad……

Ray looks at Mistin seeing the conflicting expressions on their face, Audrey trying to help calm them down. Audrey knew if Ray was exposed as Binary Star it would cause problems… possibly a huge distrust in their relationship.

“Everything alright?”

“Yeah… yeah…”

“Mistin you look a bit-“

“I said I’m fine.”

Audrey and Ray were caught off guard at the instant snap back, Mistin realized how their tone was.

“Ugh… maybe I just need to sit down…”

“I think that’s a good idea. You probably need it after that encounter…”

Audrey and Ray watch as Mistin goes to sit down and think. Audrey feeling horrible about how they don’t know what world Ray is risking Mistin into…

—————————————————————————————

Ray decides to ask Audrey since she was here before him, upon what happened earlier before he came in.

“Audrey… who was here before I came in?”

Audrey sighs and ponders a bit, although she didn’t like the guy, she didn’t want any unnecessary trouble to happen because of her, but it was going to happen anyways.

“Blaze…. came in. He tried to leave with Mistin… damn bastard didn’t even back off when I told him to…”

Audrey could feel the irritation of Blaze interfering with his personal life. Audrey understands his anger… however hopes he won’t do anything too troubling. That’s when Ray takes a deep breath as to calm down for a moment. He then patted Audrey on the shoulder, Audrey was caught off guard by the sudden gesture.

“Thank you for looking out for them while I wasn’t here. I think I would’ve done something… way worse than just words.”

“Ray don’t try anything, what if Herschel gets on your ass for it? Besides… we all know what the NAHA is willing to do in order to keep you in their grasp….”

Ray looks at Audrey’s worried expression.. he then patted her shoulder to give her assurance that he will take care of it.

He then looks at Mistin who was deep in thought. Audrey noticed his gaze over towards them. Even though they don’t want ‘innocent’ people to get involved with heros… she didn’t want him to suffer… yes she was once his sidekick and promised not to interfere with his personal life… however when it comes down to the present, she can’t help but worry he’s growing less and less human every time as Binary star. All she knows is that he practically grew up with nobody to help him out…. Or even see if he was ok… she heard of steel sheriff… knowing how problematic he was… she couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. She once saw him looking over towards her and her father after her announcement of officially becoming a hero. She wondered why he looked over… the memory was a bit hazy now… was he jealous, mad? Or….. all they knew was that he never paid too much attention to them till now… she did offer help now and then, but not always… that night at the hospital… he seemed truly sorry… was he telling the truth or was it lie?
Even so… they want to trust him… even if he doesn’t fully trust her.

She sighs, crossing her arms.

“Go, I’m sure you’re just waiting to talk to them. Just don’t press too much into asking what’s wrong ok? You might scare them away.”

Ray looks at Audrey for a bit, but then nods, walking over to Mistin.

‘Ray… if you can read my thoughts… just be careful… alright..?’

—————————————————————————————

Mistin lost in thought, couldn’t help but think about Ray and if they can trust him or not. When Ray sat by them.

“So, how have you been?”

“Oh! Shit- sorry. Deep in thought.”

Ray nods, and Mistin felt awkward. Way to start a conversation….

“Ahem! I’m fine, just a bit jumpy than normal….”

“Really?”

“Yeah…”

Ray looked more interested to know what was going on through Mistin’s head lately, however Mistin didn’t want to bother him or put him at risk…. Mistin felt conflicted… it was stressing them out….

“Mistin?”

“…”

Mistin then realized if they did have to run away again… it would have to be now…… if Ray was the hero binary star so what…. It’s also a possibility he was after them for their past crimes. Now they’re ex delusional Villain best friend is coming after them now…… they can’t risk creed’s safety… they can’t risk anything anymore…… Mistin got up and sighed, looking at Ray. He looked concerned. Should Mistin trust him??? What if he’s like… Mistin didn’t want anything bad to happen to them or their brother. Having silently panicking in their head… Mistin finally spoke.

“Ray….”

.

.

.

.

.

.

“I… I need to get going…”

Ray looked genuinely concerned. He then got up to.

“Mistin?-”

“Ray, I just… need time to myself….”

“What?”

Mistin looked at Ray, he was speechless. Mistin knew it was an asshole move but they didn’t want anyone getting hurt…. Not anymore…. Not because of them… they need to leave. Right now.

They quickly grabbed their stuff and started walking towards the door.

“Mistin wait-“

Mistin walks past a confused Audrey, Ray going after Mistin. He grabbed their wrist. Mistin doesn’t look back.

“Mistin, whatever you’re going through… you can always talk to me… alright?”

Mistin felt like their relationship with Ray was going nicely… but in these circumstances they aren’t choosing themselves…..

They’re choosing to keep everyone safe.

“I’m sorry.”

Mistin yanked their wrists from his grasp, as soon as they gone out the door, they immediately sprinted back home. Not looking back, they needed to be ready, they knew Double… he wouldn’t give them up unless they were six feet under. Using people around them as tools… they knew they’d use someone they deeply cared for to get them back…… they won’t let him get the chance… if Double wants them, they’ll have to drag they’re cold rotting corpse. They won’t stop trying to escape the chaos that’s for sure… but if one thing was clear…

They are not… going back……

The door to their apartment slammed open, they immediately gather and destroy anything that would hint to anything or anyone that could possibly be used as leverage against them, they then gathered what’s need and packed it so that they’d be ready to leave. Soon Mistin’s phone would buzz. They looked at their phone. So many text messages.

Notification from

Creed
You ok? You ran out of the cafe earlier, did that new regular say something to you?

Haley
I’ve been trying to call you, are you alright? I saw what happened. Please answer if you get this.

Miles
You doing ok? Heard what happened. :(

Mistin looking at these messages… seeing how they’re all worried about them… wet drops of tears hits the phone screen… they just wanted this to end. They didn’t want to run… especially since they’ve just found the peace they’ve oh so wanted to have…. Mistin placed they’re back against the wall… dropping they’re phone…

They’re trapped…… in an endless loop aren’t they?

They’re bound to be stuck….

Forever running….

Forever hiding……

The tears were practically soaked in their jeans… they were in so much darkness it was hard to see…… too far from the surface to get out and finally breathe…. they didn’t move, they didn’t think… they simply weep into their knees… the now trashed apartment they were in, feeling so small…

Buzz

Buzz

“…”

Buzz

Buzz

Mistin looked at the phone on the floor… as it buzzed… it didn’t stop… it was probably Hal or Creed…. Still worried… they should probably respond…. They picked up the phone. Seeing the Lock Screen along with the notification box.

‘Ray…?’

Ray
Hey, I’m sorry if this is bad timing but just know I’m available to talk.

“…”

Mistin pondered… they pressed on the notification and went to block him, as to try and not contact them again but…

Ray
If not… I get it. You’re probably going through something tough.

The text buzzed in and Mistin remembered when they first met, and how they simply wrote something on the sleeve to make him ease up a bit… then remembered how he practically read their expression as they were in distress… would…. Would anyone else do that for them…? Probably not a random stranger…. However… it was like they knew him for years…

They then decided not to press the block button, typing in words only to delete them. They were never good with typing words out…

Mistin
Call?

With that Mistin leaned back, not expecting anything until their phone rang. The name of the Call was Ray. Mistin was hesitant… however pressed answer.

“Hey…”

“Hey.”

Mistin’s voice was a bit shaken and gross after crying for awhile. Hearing his voice after everything felt… awkward…

“Did that talk with Blaze really bother you that much?”

Mistin let out an unsure murmur of a “ I don’t know.”

“I heard what you did though… that was… pretty brave of you. To talk like that to a hero I mean.”

Mistin grumbled a bit of an annoyed yet obvious sound that they weren’t in the mood to joke around.

“I see. I was just trying to lighten the mood.”

“…”

A silence ran over the call for awhile… Mistin not sure what to say.

“Want me to come over? Or maybe go for a walk?”

“What? Don’t you have-“

“No I don’t. I-… have the day off.”

On Ray’s end Audrey looked at Ray, he looked at Audrey and she nodded understanding, she suggested she take up his shift today, since Mistin was in a bad mental state today after the blaze encounter they had. She didn’t think it would be this bad though… unless something else happened outside of work Ray isn’t telling her about.

“……Where should we go?”

“There’s a park nearby.”

“Nearby where?”

“Ah right specifics. Sorry… here, I’ll send the location.”

Mistin’s phone buzzed as the call was still on. It was nearby their apartment. It was slightly far.

“Don’t feel pressured to come ok? Take your time.”

With that Ray hung up, to let them choose. Mistin sat there…. Thinking on what to do….

Ray stood near the entrance, people passing by, even some couples nearby. He wasn’t in the mood to see that. Maybe he wasn’t to a point where Mistin trusted him to go on walks alone like last time? No that wouldn’t make much sense…. Unless….

“Ahem!”

Ray looked at the direction where the noise came from. It was was them…

“Sta- Mistin.”

Mistin looked away silently, their eyes did show they’ve been crying. He hated that look, not because he didn’t like it in general… but it pains him to see them like this… in such a fragile state…… like glass that could break any second.

“So um… shall we?”

He gestured toward the park. Mistin nodded, they thought maybe a walk could help clear their head. Ray and Mistin gone in and walked silently. Ray wasn’t too sure on what to say after today… Audrey seemed confused and concerned… especially after Mistin practically ran away… all he remembered was when he just stood there… he wanted to go after them but Audrey stopped him.

—————————————————————————————

“Audrey I have to-“

“No you don’t! Ray it’s clear they’re upset about something… and if there’s anything I know it wasn’t just about the encounter with Blaze… there’s something else going on.”

Ray knew exactly what that was… because he walked home Mistin when they felt unsafe… he heard Mistin’s voice while walking through the busy streets, and heard a bit of the other familiar voice… their ‘ex boyfriend’ they assumed. He knew all too well about him… he desperately wanted to rip that man to shreds, even if it meant they’d view him differently. Audrey noticed his expression.

“You know something… don’t you?”

Ray stayed silent… Audrey didn’t want to pressure him… she then took a deep breath and looked at him firmly.

“Ray, if it ever comes down to you helping them out… don’t miss it… if anything… you might end up on a dead end…”

“Then why stop me?”

“Does it look like right now is a good time for them to talk to you?”

Ray looked confused for a bit, but then realized that Audrey was trying to help him. It’s not like her to suddenly take interest in what he wants to do…. But… looking at his phone, the number which Mistin’s name was displayed… he sighed.

“Might end up on a dead end… huh…?”

Ray knew if Mistin skipped town again he’d have to search for them all over again… he decided to take a chance to a least make sure it doesn’t happen again….

—————————————————————————————

Ray and Mistin were walking for quite some time, he then noticed them slowing down.

“You getting tired?”

“Hm?”

“You’re slowing down a bit.”

“Ah…. Sorry…. Just um… a lot on my mind.”

Ray couldn’t help but think about how stressful it is for them… to run away… to try everything to gain peace just to fail in the end… he didn’t know he was capable of doing that… he then gestured towards a nearby bench to rest. Mistin obliged and sat down, Ray sitting a bit apart as to give them space.

“So you decided to accept my invitation… why?”

Mistin sat there silent for a bit… they then shrugged lightly shaking their head a bit while doing so. Looking a bit at a loss at what exactly to do.

“I guess…. I just needed air… and I probably… owe you an explanation.”

Mistin and Ray sat there in silence a again… Ray patiently waited as to not pressure them into giving the reason they acted like that in the cafe…

“I… I’m dealing with things I’ve done in the past… and…… I don’t know why I’m telling you all this- i just….” “Hey… it’s ok…”

Ray was taken aback at the fact they admitted this. Sure he knew but he never thought Mistin would come out and say it this early in their relationship. He wanted them to feel safe with him…. Yet….

“It’s um… it’s difficult to explain… but… I’ve made bad decisions… but I was only trying to help my family… I’m not saying I’m innocent at all but…… it was… very stupid of me… very… very stupid… to think I would escape…”

“It’s was something in the past, right?”

Mistin nodded, a look of defeat across their face. Ray could practically feel how defeated they are. The look made his heart feel a bit of a heavy pressure on him, like never before….

“Ray… are you… a hero?”

Ray didn’t expect that… he was more on edge now.

“What gives you that idea?”

Mistin sighs. Contemplating on what to say next, they weren’t sure how to continue… Ray was worried the jig was up now… and that the possibility of getting closer to Mistin was long gone now…

“Just… I find it weird a guy named blaze would come in… claiming you’re a hero… not to mention that time when you slipped that coffee sleeve along with the cash in my apron…. I notice well…”

Mistin pointed at his arm. Ray could practically feel his anxiety flare up more as Mistin suspected him more.

“Ray… if you are… I’m… not going to judge I just… I don’t want you to get involved with me… if you aren’t a hero… but hero or not… I want to trust you I do… but……”

Mistin paused, what is Ray supposed to say? “Yes I am the hero Binary Star!” That would scare them off possibly.

“I…. I’m sorry…. Why would I think you’re ready to hear such things…. I just…. Fuck…. I feel so stupid…. Why would I-….”

Ray was speechless, Mistin looked at the ground…. A sense of vulnerability was evident on Mistin’s face… Ray couldn’t fathom how he should respond in this situation… should he tell the truth… or lie..? Mistin hates liars but… Mistin also doesn’t like being involved with heros…… but they’re also making it clear that it would change a bit in their relationship between them… however would take a bit to rebuild some trust… even if only for a little bit…

“I am…”

“What-“

Ray finally spoke up, Mistin looked at him making sure he wasn’t joking… was he really telling them the truth?

“Mistin I-“

“No, it’s fine… I just…”

Ray and Mistin sat there silently for a bit before they could be able to speak to each other again.

“Do you know at least what hero I am…?”

“Not yet… I haven’t pinpointed it out yet…”

Ray nodded glad they don’t suspect him fully of being Binary Star just yet… he felt a bit of relief that he was able to get this truth off his chest for himself… however was more worried about Mistin.

“I’m… glad you decided to be honest with me… even if it meant it would have to be at cost…”

“I’m fine with being honest as long as I get to keep talking to you every chance I get.”

Mistin felt their cheeks heat up, not helping a bit of a smile. Ray smiled a bit too. Mistin looked away, embarrassed.

“It’s getting late… want me to walk you home?”

“You don’t mind doing it again?”

Ray only got up and offered his hand to them.

“I don’t mind at all. Besides it’s better to have you safe than in danger.”

Mistin smiles a small smile.

“Better to be safe than sorry I guess.”

They then take his hand and get up…

—————————————————————————————

On the walk back to their apartment Mistin felt more at ease knowing he was willing to not keep secrets from them… still feeling bad at the fact they suspected him and their intuition was right. They couldn’t help but feel closer to him now. Yes they were told to not trust hero’s completely, however they felt more confident about Ray not being like the hero’s their father always mentioned not to trust. It’s a risk of a lapse in judgment… but at least they’re willing to experience it themselves instead of it just being because someone else said they don’t trust them. Mistin said their goodbye’s to Ray and Ray said their goodbyes to Mistin. Like always they wanted their conversation to last longer.. however it would have to be when there is a time when they aren’t running… if he knows best… he won’t chase after them…

‘I’m sorry…… Ray… maybe in a different universe we would’ve been closer…. And… happy…’

—————————————————————————————

“What! You’re quitting?”

Haley pinched Creed after seeing Mistin hand in their resignation letter as they hand it over to Hal. It came as a shock to both Hal and Creed… Mistin didn’t want to leave… they truly didn’t.. but.. they had to… they had to protect the people they care about before that bastard Double Vision uses them against them. They aren’t going to drag anyone in this mess. They won’t risk shit…

“There’s nothing me or your brother can say huh…?”

Mistin nods as they see the saddening expressions on both of Creed and Hal’s faces…

“It’s okay..”

Hal whispered, as they then looked up at Mistin from the letter in their hand.

“I’m sure it’s for a good reason…”

Mistin didn’t know what to say…

“I may be selfish for saying this but… I was really hoping you’d stay Mist… I’m… I’m really hoping to see you again soon…”

Creed said, looking down as to try to not show how hurt he was…

“I’m sure whatever you’re running from when it’s over you can come back…”

Mistin looked at Hal… not questioning how they knew.. it was as if they were also running away from something… however they were more than understanding that Mistin needed to do this… Mistin nodded… hopefully one day they can.

“I’m assuming you’re not finishing out this week?”

Mistin shook their head.

“Thought so. Don’t worry, we will be fine. Your last paycheck will be in next week.”

Haley pulled Mistin into a hug. They pulled back looking at them warmly. Then they saw their brother, Mistin then opened their arms. It didn’t take long for him to hug them. They’re little brother… all he ever wanted to do was be happy with his family… Mistin wanted the same… however for now… that will have to wait… they won’t risk him getting hurt. They will just have to keep running till one day Double ether gets killed or ends up dead… ether way it doesn’t sound too bad of an idea right now…

Mistin made their way out of the cafe, they already had everything they needed and destroyed tracks they believed would be able to find them easily… Double won’t find them this time… he won’t… that’s not a promise…. Not anymore…

Mistin decided to take another route from their apartment, they’re get away from this place… Mistin keeping their guard up. Soon a magazine from a bench blows over from a nearby bench comes towards their feet. Mistin picks it up to try and throw it away, however the wind today was getting quite annoying.

As they walked they’re eyes glance at the magazine. The familiar silhouette of Binary Star on the cover, of course…… Binary Star adorns the cover like greek god… Mistin noticed how this isn’t usually how he’s presented… odd… they decided to read the interview.

‘Inside the dazzling world of world of Binary Star!’

From Binary Star’s time fighting for world peace, to his new city, our favorite hero tells us everything.

Mistin skipped over some lines as it was more boring, than interesting…

Today we had the chance to sit down and talk one on one with our favorite Hero from the stars.

“Despite Being everyone’s favorite hero, you seem to have been taking on a new look recently. This new, dangerous, and dare I say sexy look is driving fans wild! Can you tell us what inspired this change?”

Binary star gives a polite laugh

“Well, I wanted to show a new side of myself to the fans. I wanted people to understand that us hero’s aren’t just robots, we are human too.”

Mistin looked over the other lines of words over the magazine, the words falling into a bit of familiar territory in mind.

“I enjoy my time off, I drink black coffee almost every morning, I have been even thinking of adopting a cat.”

‘Ray….’ Mistin decided to put down the magazine as to try and not assume. If Ray wants to say he’s Binary Star that’s his truth to tell. However they prefer not to find out themselves because if the magazine says he’s Binary Star then what good is it if he says it himself?

Mistin thought of Ray…. Did they even tell him they’re leaving? Shit…… they pulled out their phone to call but pause… what if he’s out there being a hero right now….? Should they call and say they’re skipping town or keep him in the dark? Mistin said they hated liars… so by not telling him it’s a bigger asshole move… they then were about to press call until the ground shook.

“Wha- agh!”

The ground started shaking violently… familiar smoke came from the distance…. Was that?

‘No…… no…. NO!’

Mistin without thinking ran towards the familiar street where the Cafe Waning Crescent was. They aren’t going to let stupid aliens take their family! No they won’t let that happen…… not while they’re still around.

When they arrived they saw the cafe was practically destroyed… to rubble… the adrenaline rush kicked in and immediately gone in not caring if the Aliens were near.

“CREED!”

Mistin shouts desperately.

“HALEY!”

No answer…

“MILES!”

Mistin’s heart sinks at the possibility that they died here…

Until someone covers their mouth and shushes them. The masculine voice rang familiar to them.

“Creed! Thank god you’re ok.”

Mistin quickly hugged him. He hugged back.

“Why aren’t you running away? You need to go now!”

“I didn’t run because I knew you’d come back for me… if anything I’m going to help get you out of here like you did for me when I was in danger.”

Mistin couldn’t help but smile as they see their siblings now acting out to help them and also himself.

Soon the noise of Aliens grew near.

“Hurry over here!”

Creed took Mistin’s hand as they then hid from the Aliens. Creed’s who rang, he quickly picked it up.

“Creed! Is Mistin with you? Are you alright?”

Hal’s voice rang through the call. Mistin smiled as they saw how Hal was quick to worry about the both of them.. even if in a dangerous situation like this…

Soon the ground shakes and the two siblings see the alien grow near.

“Haley I’ll call back..”

Mistin and Creed quickly began to try and not make a single sound. The growls of the alien ever so near… Mistin. Spots a small once of rubble and throws it in a different direction, the shriek of the alien was loud before soon going towards the sound. Creed and Mistin quickly get up and start running only for Mistin to get a big slash on their leg from the iron bar sticking out. Creed quickly rushes to them. Mistin’s ability activates without warning, making Creed feel a bit light headed.

“Shit- ah… Creed you need to run. My ability is going to end up making you faint to the ground before the both of us get out of here… agh this hurts…”

“No! I’m not leaving you! I just can’t.”

The roar of the alien grow close again.

“Creed, Theres no time you need to-“

“Excuse me.”

Suddenly the familiar colors of blue, red, and gold came to view as Mistin turns their head, face to face with the one and only…

“Binary Star…”

Creed shakes his head as to stay awake.

“Mr. Binary Star please take them out of here they’re injured and need help, I can get out on my own.”

Before Mistin could object.

“Not on your own. The Alien is faster than you think.”

Was that… Sparks? How many heroes are these two going to meet today?

“Here, I’ll help you out of here, while Binary Star helps this one here. That looks like it needs to be treated right away don’t you think Binary Star?”

She looked at Binary Star, He then clears his throat. Mistin really didn’t want to leave Creed with the hero’s ether…. Yet again what exact choice do they have?

“Indeed. Walking would probably be difficult too! Allow me.”

Without warning Binary Star lifts Mistin. Mistin glares at him, Sparks sighs. The roar of the Alien echos.

“What about the Alien?”

“No worries! Binary Stars new sidekick along with another hero is here to help out. Let’s get you two out of here first.”

Sparks then takes Creeds hand and guides him. Mistin read the last sentence on his lips.

‘Please be safe.’

Mistin nods as they were left with Binary Star.

“You know… you really should get going now… my ability… it can make people… fall unconscious…”

“Ah, that’s why I feel a bit lightheaded then.” Binary Star says almost in a joking manner. Leaving them with a neutral face, how could he not take them seriously?

“If only I had some water then it’d might stop…”

Binary Star didn’t move though. Mistin was confused on why… until they looked at his eyes… familiar black eyes.

“Um.. we should-“

The loud roar came out of nowhere, the alien charged at the two. Binary Star immediately took flight, Mistin closed their eyes as the fast winds hits their face. Not knowing where he’s going to land. Holding on tight for dear life… Soon the wind stopped blowing and they felt him land along with them.

“You can open you eyes now… sorry for the lack of warning…”

Mistin opens their eyes to see a worried hero’s expression on his face. He sets them down carefully, Mistin making a slight hiss as the deep slash on their leg was now on the ground. Binary Star looks around.

“One moment.”

Mistin nodded and looked at how bad the slash was. That seriously was deep… they probably need stitches now… soon the hero from the stars returned with some water to help clean it along with some bandages which Mistin questioned where they got them but the sting of the water hitting their wound cuts off the thought.

“Agh!”

“Sorry… ok um here..”

He quickly yet carefully tended to their wounded leg. Mistin couldn’t help but look at the hero. Was a hero like him really helping someone like them? Something seems off…

“There…. You might need to get that checked out… however I hope this helps in the meantime…”

“Ah, it’s not the worst that could happen… at least you didn’t have a full on sewing needle and thread. That would’ve been way creepier.”

“Hey never know when an alien might hurt you so badly.”

Binary Star let’s put a light laugh. Mistin smiles at this. Mistin not seeing how his eyes never once left them, if Mistin were to look, they would’ve seen the familiar look of concern, but a look of genuine care. He was so focused on them… he didn’t notice the single slip up he’d say right to Mistin themselves.

“ I’m just… very glad you’re ok.“

Mistin nodded… for some reason Binary Star leaned in, while Mistin was left confused.

“Um… what are you doing?”

“Ah! Uh… shit…”

“Were you… really expecting a kiss right now?”

“I- well….”

Mistin shook their head. Binary Star looked at them, as if this never happened before, or this wasn’t as planned.

“Fucking hero’s…..”

Mistin mumbles as they hiss through their teeth while they got up, their injury clearly bothering them more…

“Whoa! Hey wait a minute-“

“I’m fine! Geez…. Just…. Take me home….”

“Wait a sec I wanted to ask-“

“What?”

Mistin looked at him, clearly disinterested, trying to figure out a way down. Binary Star clears his throat as if he was nervous to talk or mess up his words.

“Would you like to go out to dinner some ti-“

Mistin held up their hand in his face. He noticed their angered expression. The ‘tch’ they made in annoyance.

“We’re done here.”

“What-“

“Look just take me home!”

“But I-“

“God damn it! Would you just take a fucking hint?”

Despite Mistin’s damaged leg they took a few steps closer towards him, making Binary Star step back a bit.

“I’m not interested in anything you have to say. I don’t owe you shit! Not for saving my life, not for saving my brothers life, you heros think your owed something all the fucking time!”

Binary Star narrows his eyes clearly not liking what Mistin is saying.

“Now that just-“

“Oh don’t you dare start!”

“Start what?”

“Defending this shit. Trying to defend yourself not just trying to kiss me, or ask me out after saving me from a literal alien attack. Do you even know how terrifying that shit is?”

“Oh I’m well aware but I was just trying to lighten the mood.”

“With what? That bullshit?”

“…”

Mistin shook their head more irritated. Binary Star than started to wonder why being Binary Star, wasn’t working for them…. Even villains or ex villains pick their favorite hero’s.

“Just take me home….”

“I-“

“You know what- fuck off, I don’t want to see you anywhere near me…. Leave me alone….”

Binary Star sighs, not knowing what else to do…. He turns to leave, but not before looking at Mistin, only to see them on their phone….

Trying to call him…

Before he could rush to stop them, his ringtone… caused them to turn to face him….

‘Really fucking wish they let me have a silent feature….’

Binary Star immediately thought as Mistin stared in disbelief… they look at their phone and then to him.

“Ray….”

Ray…. Looked away from them, he didn’t know what to say… he didn’t even stop them from coming closer to take off his mask, revealing who he was underneath…. Mistin had their other hand to their mouth.

‘Binary Star….. Ray… no… they… he- he can’t be him. Not the top hero of the fucking country…’

“Star…” he tried to grab their hand to comfort them with the realization… but Mistin quickly moved away.

“Mistin?”

“I-…. I need space…”

“Mistin please wait-“ he finally managed to grab onto their hand.

“Ray! Please….”

He didn’t want to… but…… something in him… shifted… an invisible force? Or maybe…. Sympathy for them? Worry? A voice telling him to let them go…. Just this once…. He didn’t know if he could trust them… but looking at their face…

He let go….

He watches as Mistin somehow gets down, wanting to help them… but something managed to stop him…. He can only hope that… this decision wasn’t a big mistake… he looked down… the mask… he so deeply hates putting on… he wonders when Mistin dropped it… yet again… looking at the retreating figure…

He puts back on the mask… knowing that it’s not going to be an easy fix in their building relationship…

Mistin then stops for a bit, panting heavily, their lungs felt like they were on fire. They clench their chest…they soon sat down due to now feeling the intense pain in their leg from the wound, the bandage now soaked with fresh blood. Also causing them to feel light headed from both running and the amount of blood that came from they’re leg they didn’t think was possible.

‘Why….. why him…?’

Mistin couldn’t handle this… not now… Mistin’s emotions got the better of them and tears started falling… their mind was spinning so fast… too fast… they hated it… their brother possibly being in danger along with Haley and Miles, Ray now Binary Star? What else? The fact Double was after them wasn’t enough? For Fuck sake… what else is next?!

Mistin was on their knees tears hit the concrete sidewalk as they were tired…. So tired…. Why does this have to happen to them….?

They looked at their phone screen, the caller ID. Their brother… Creed… they weren’t ready to talk to to him yet. A pair of footsteps walks up behind them. A hand on their shoulder was what broke through their current state. Now exchanged with pure fear.

“Aww who hurt you…. Honey?”

Mistin before they could do anything got their mouth covered with a cloth they tried to fight back, since when did they get so weak that he’s stronger than them? Shit…. SHIT! Their vision fading, desperately fighting for what little strength they have to escape. Only to fail, they’re body growing weaker….

“I’ve missed you so badly… I’m glad I found you~… I warned you….”

‘Ray…. Help me….’

Everything went black… all they heard was Double Vision’s laughter…… that bastard…….

Chapter Text

Mistin’s head pounded… the ache further making it all the more uncomfortable… Mistin tried to lift their hand only to realize their hand didn’t move from the spot. Feeling the tug of something around it. Mistin’s eyes finally adjust to see themself tied up. Mist tried desperately to get out but fail. Were these reinforced?

“Boss! Dusk is awake!”

Mistin lifted their head, the memories finally coming back…. Double Vision……

“Rise and Shine Honey, wouldn’t want to keep me waiting not.. not after all this time.”

Mistin glares at him in defiance. Double’s eyes showed that his expression under the black face mask was a wicked grin. Mistin struggled against the ties. They won’t budge. Double laughs at the attempts to escape.

“Reinforced… just for you. I know you too well… we wouldn’t want you escaping again right?”

‘Of course……’

Mistin looked behind Double seeing clearly now there was henchmen behind him. Now it was definitely more difficult to escape… the night crew was all too familiar to Mistin, one group being the violent side and the other, the non violent. They worked hard to get out only to be dragged here… Mistin looked at their surroundings more, this was an abandoned warehouse. Of course, the classic hideout. Especially for kidnapping victims… or old members… due to the current situation.

“You know, I remember you being one of our best… however you ran away, betrayed the crew… that really hurt… isn’t that right?”

The henchmen shouted agreements, Mistin continued to glare. Despite the situation, they’ve been through worse… Mistin then noticed a familiar sight… was that?

“Ah, I see you’ve noticed… Ripley, come say hi… won’t you?”

Ripley, with a look of guilt on his face came forward. He stood infront of Mistin. A look of anger clear on Mistin’s face, why would Ripley do such a thing?! Does he not know what type of risk he’s doing when leading this lunatic to them? Double enjoys the look upon Mistin’s face.

“Don’t trust everyone Honey…”

Ripley when ordered stood to the side again. The guilty expression never left…

“You know it hurt when you left… hurt me.”

He took a knife, now gripping Mistin’s face to look at him, the knife ever so close to their face.

“When you did, I saw red… that was a dumb move on your part… but I found you again…”

Mistin’s face was released from Double’s firm grip. He then turns to the henchman.

“Now men, why don’t we give our dear Dusk here a lesson ever lasting?”

The henchmen’s loud agreements were enough to make Mistin’s hand shake a bit, however they snapped themselves back to their main focus… getting away from him.

“Hm… what will even the odds? An eye for an eye… might I say.”

The henchmen start shouting suggestions, Mistin felt sick… the fact their own well being was going to be violently damaged like a object on display…

“A Finger!”

“An Arm!”

“An eye!”

“Two fingers!”

The suggestions felt everlasting… they were disgusted at how they once were apart of the night crew.

“Two fingers it is!”

Some of the henchmen boo as some also still cheer. Mistin wouldn’t let him a fucking finger on him.

“Ripley, get the ice. Better hope it’s not melted by now.”

Double then turns to Mistin who was struggling with the ties. Double laughs at this. Getting down to their level.

“Hey at least I’m the one doing this to you… just be thankful I haven’t found your family members yet… otherwise you’re punishment would’ve been way more than just two little fingers… however, there’s one I don’t want to encounter….”

Family… Creed…. He hasn’t found him yet Mistin kept the act of struggle, knowing for a fact if they falter now he will know they’re brother is here in the city… they can’t risk shit… at least it’s them who’s getting hurt instead of him. Ripley comes back with the ice setting it down beside Mistin. Mist looks away, not wanting to acknowledge a traitor.

“I’m sorry Mist… but I also had to protect someone…”

Mistin froze at this. Did… did Double really threaten Ridley’s loved ones in order to get to them? This bastard…. Mistin’s rage was growing by the minute… but looks at Ripley.. Ripley looks at Mistin, the look of rage wasn’t toward him anymore, Mistin only nods, and Ripley doesn’t speak further..

“Ripley, untie this hand.”

He complied, Mistin faked a struggle. They were stronger than Ripley but Ripley managed to pin their arm down. Double takes out the cold knife marking one of the fingers, the index now has a small cut for where to aim.

“Here’s the deal dusk. I’ll allow you to choose which one to keep after I’m done. Because I love you…”

He then cresses Mistin’s cheek, a feeling of disgust comes over them. This guy won’t take a hint.

“But I am aware your ability takes effect when you’re hurt… when the skin is cut. And your blood acts as the misty blanket for people to fall asleep… quite the ability to…”

A drop of water from the ice hits the wound. Mistin knew far to well it wouldn’t be that easy for him to forget…

“However a simple drop could stop it in a heartbeat… therefore the plan is simple… I’ll put a little ice over it since it’s already melting, and make sure you learn your lesson… no wonder how you got your new name due to you ability… it’s quite useful when needed….”

Mistin’s heart beats fast as the machete moves howevering over their finger, making sure he won’t miss. Mistin felt something brush against their leg.. wait… their leg. They just need to open it again… but how… suddenly the big machete was in their face along with a Double who stares intently… if looks could kill they’d be dead now…

“You seemed to be distracted… keep focusing on this… don’t even think about anything else! You have to learn what it’s like to lose something valuable… like I did…”

Mistin shifted their leg again the ties, the bandages were loose, the wound stings but it’ll work if I makes just enough in order to escape.

“Focus on something else I’ll take another for good measure…”

Mistin saw as he raised the large knife from what felt like slow motion… Mist knew the plan included losing a finger.. but as long as it works, it’ll be worth it. Ripley looks away, while Mistin waits for what is to come.

“What the fuck are you doing?”

Suddenly the Machete stopped right before the finger was cut off. Ripley looks up, as Mist looks to see a familiar figure. Double looks over at the person who shouted.

‘Ray…?’

Mistin didn’t know what exactly to do… yell? Can’t do that due to the cloth gag… All they know is that Double is definitely fucked in this situation despite the ability of teleportation. Double becomes annoyed, placing the machete down and grabbing Mistin’s face violently looking square in the eye. Mistin however gained the strength to head bud him. One of the henchmen reached out to hold Mistin in place. Ray didn’t like that one bit.

“Let them go…”

Ray glares at Double who just laughs. He gets up and walks towards him, facing him.

“Who are you to give me orders? If anything… pal… you should leave… this place isn’t really meant for people like you..”

Ripley shook Mistin’s arm a bit, gave Mistin a gesture toward the henchman holding them. Mistin shook they’re noting him to wait. Ripley although confused complied.

Ray simply stares, the same deep glare adorning his face. He although was angry saw what Mistin and Ripley did, knowing well what they were planning, which meant he had to make sure he had the focus on him.

“For your own well being I suggest you move along quickly before I change my mind and have my men here take care of you. I have something else important to do.”

“Let go of Mistin.”

Double was now even more ticked off, Ripley felt nervous, Mistin too. However they still needed to wait.

“Let me take Mist and go. You and your cronies can do whatever the hell you want. Trust me when I say I’m being generous here…”

Double laughed without humor, Mistin noticed the henchman’s head swerving a bit, Ripley to. However Mistin’s head leans toward the smaller knife Double had before the Machete. He quickly took I and pricked himself to stay awake a bit longer. It was almost time…

“You want to stick around? Fine…. Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you-“

The stern voice cuts off Double, Making Mistin jump a bit, for they never heard Ray like that before… Ray wasn’t going to let this happen, not until Mistin was safe.

“I don’t think you heard me properly. I said Fuck. Off.”

The familiar red eyes glow, showing Ray wasn’t messing around, Double instantly recognized the familiar glow, his anger grew… Ripley was shocked. The Henchmen holding Mistin took a step back.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding….”

Double turns to Mistin incredulously. Mistin looking at him with the same glare…

“This is who you prefer? Fucking Binary Star?! Your stupid watchdog?”

Double paces, he was frustrated now… Mistin actually kinda liked that, however didn’t want to be here when things go down. Along with Ripley.

“Out of everyone, this is your hero boy-toy?”

Ripley was now griping tight onto the knife he had, just a little more time…

“Goddamnit…”

Ray shot a glance at Mistin and his expression became a more furious than ever. Ripley shook his head to stay awake. Pricking himself again.

“Fine! Whatever! I guess I’ll be the first to take down Binary Star then. The greatest “hero” of the damn city!”

Double threw a knife Mistin didn’t notice he had and suddenly an angry red laser cuts it down. Suddenly with a yell the henchman run towards Ray their weapons in tow. Blood splattered over Mistin and Ripley…

As the henchmen to the left of Mistin is sliced in two the blood splashes against the ground. Everything is only described as a one-sided bloodbath as Ripley finally got to cut Mistin’s ties and make sure they’re fully free. He nearly faints due to Mistin’s ability however Mistin quickly shakes him to keep him awake.

“Agh! Thanks.”

“Thanks are for later when we-“

“Agh!”

“Ripley!”

Double suddenly took the knife that Ripley had and put it to Ripley’s neck, Mistin unsure whether or not to attack, they couldn’t call for Ray due to how all the henchmen were practically being killed like ants. They didn’t want to look over at the bloodbath ether…

“Thought it would be that easy huh? Now Honey while your boy-toy is taking care of my men, would you kindly come with me?”

‘Can’t outrun him and leave Ripley behind… but I can’t risk him getting hurt ether…. Shit!’

Mistin knew if they said no Ripley would die because they said no… fuck…. FUCK! Suddenly Ripley attacks Double, he fights back. Mistin yells to stop, but however due to how much stronger Double was…

Ripley didn’t stand a chance against him…

A knife to the stomach was all it took. Double attempts to take Mistin but the red laser come close to cutting his face off. The mask once covering his face now had burn marks and Double’s face had a graze of it. Double had no choice but to retreat. Ray was over in an instant… With the violence finally settled down, Mistin rushes over to their old friend, coughing up blood.

“Rip! Please just hang on please-“

Ripley stops Mistin, simply looking at them, tears fill their eyes. Ray stood there, seeing this play out… he didn’t know Ripley but saw how Mistin simply couldn’t let him die like this. Ray knew he couldn’t save him, even going to the nearest hospital was long enough to when he dies of bloodloss.

“I’m sorry… for… ratting you out… ugh… it was shitty but-“

“Save your breath you need it. Agh! Ray help me out here I can’t-“

“It’s fine… tell… Creed… I’m sorry… for that one time…. ”

Mistin chokes out sobs, seeing Ripley dying right infront of them. Ripley was a good friend, even when he seemed like a coward every now and then. Ripley only smiles.

“At least… you’re… safe..”

His breathing stops… and his head slowly drops. He was… gone… Mistin shakes him trying to wake him up. It was no use… he was gone… Mistin looked at the blood on their hands then towards the mass slaughter across the warehouse… Mistin couldn’t help but tear up… this was all their fault… if only they wouldn’t have been so selfish maybe he would still be alive…. Ray kneeled down, before he could say anything, Mistin leaned into him, crying into his shoulder despite the blood being there… Ray hugged Mistin, not knowing what exactly to say or do in this moment to comfort them…. Mistin wept as he was relieved he saved their life… however… wasn’t expecting this… even though they were put through this whole thing… they cared for someone else… they truly were such an incredible person… however right now Mistin was right now crying into him… he let them let all of the sorrow they felt right now go..

Soon Mistin fainted probably because they’re brain was now catching up to the shock of the situation… he wouldn’t blame them they gone through so much today… however… with this mess… he unfortunately needs help…

—————————————————————————————

Audrey looks around, no Binary Star in sight, they let out an irritating groan. Just when she thought he was actually sorry this time, he bails. That’s what she gets for-

“Hey! Careful! This thing could still possibly be alive.. you never know.”

“Right, sorry Sparks.”

“Just be more careful next time.”

Buzz

Buzz

Audrey reaches for her phone in her pocket checking the caller… Ray… Audrey was irritated because he technically all of a sudden risked almost their life and their sidekicks life and then flew off to who knows where. Of cause she’s pissed off, especially after deciding to give another chance to him.

“You got a lot of nerve calling me-“

“Audrey… I need help.”

Audrey paused a bit. The tone in his voice…. He needed help? What for? Audrey looked around, was this the reason why he left so soon?

“R- Binary Star… what’s going on?”

“Just come to my location… I’ll explain when you get here….”

He then hangs up and sends a location… Audrey felt like if they gone there, they’d be getting herself into a whole lot more than just taking up simple shifts…

“…”

“Sparks! Sparks!”

“Huh?”

“How do you feel about today’s victory?”

“Um, I’m sorry but I have more important hero duties to take care of! Also don’t go near the alien, it’s way too dangerous. Bye!”

“Sparks!”

Audrey quickly ran away, following the streets to the location without anyone noticing. Until she arrives as she was about to open the door, she smelled the familiar metallic smell… blood.. she quickly opens the door to the warehouse… her eyes widened. There was so much blood… her eyes glaze over the horrific scene, to see the dish watered blonde man. She quickly gone over to him despite the blood on the ground now staining the bottom of their hero uniform.

“Ray what’s going on-“

She notices the passed out civilian in his arms.

‘That’s…’

“You once said you would be able to help out when I needed it right?”

Audrey only nods, unsure about what exactly he’s planning. She sees him get up with Mistin in his arms, noticing how Mistin didn’t even wake up. Worried they might be dead. What exactly happened here?

“I need you to help me get Mistin home, but I also need you to keep Mistin a secret…”

Audrey looks at Mistin and then looks at Ray irritated at the fact that he isn’t even trying to explain what happened here.

“No.”

“What…?”

Ray’s eyes were red, making Audrey step back a bit, however Audrey then stood her ground. She isn’t going to allow him to just expect her to keep her mouth shut without reason. This is feeling like all the times she was given work without her knowledge, however covering up a whole massacre and keeping quiet about only one person, this situation seems to be more complicated than a simple situation such as hero work.

“I said no. Ray this- all of this looks way more than just a simple in and out situation. This all looks more… tell me what’s going on!”

Ray turned towards her making her feel more intimidated by him. However she didn’t care at this point. Some may call her idiotic for pulling such a stunt but she’s not going to fulfill orders without reason.

“You do realize I could even make your death an accident to right?”

“I’m well aware… you even did it to blaze… but I’m not going to do anything until you tell me why Mistin is so important. Why are they here? And what was the exact cause…. I’m not stupid as to just follow your orders. Tell me.”

She took a few steps towards him. A bold thing to do, she could’ve had her head taken off. Despite his irritation at her, her look of defiance never leaving him once.

He sighs, he looks at Mistin. He then looks at Audrey, the memory of when she went to the hospital to check on her father, the feeling of her caring for someone who’s been there when she needed him most. He even wonders what we’re to happen if he did take her life right now, and how everything would play out with it.

“Fine…”

Audrey gave a look of surprise, her heartbeat still beating in her ears, even though she faced him, she still felt fear. He was overwhelmingly over powered.

“Mistin… Mistin used to be a villain…”

Audrey didn’t see Mistin being in such a career. They always seemed more interested in having a peaceful life than such a- wait…. That means… Audrey’s mind realized why they were so obsessed with a peaceful life… Mistin was caught up with such a life…. They wanted peace… Audrey looked at Mistin sympathetically, now realizing how hard Mistin’s life must’ve been to want just to live in peace finally.

Ray smiles a bit, despite the blood clear on his appearance.

“You seem to already get half of the picture, but… the reason why I’m so interested, I think it’s better to get them home first, before I can fully explain… you never know if the NAHA is nearby.”

Audrey, was a bit annoyed by that but understood. The NAHA was always on their asses to make sure the hero image everyone had a flawless. Just imaging what they’d say about this makes they're head ache.

“Hm, this looks like a simple kidnapping, but without a the victim, it would be suspicious.”

Ray looks over at Ripley’s body, although he helped with the kidnapping, he tried to help Mistin to make up for it. However though scummy Ray decided to use him for the victim in this moment.

“Make him the victim.”

“Huh? What do you- OH MY GOD!”

Audrey freaks out, she didn’t notice till now that there was a body there. She however clears her throat and goes back to helping clear this out.

“Ok, um.. let’s make him the victim, oh jesus… they must’ve really lodged that knife in there… um… ok..”

Audrey would try to keep it together, but Ray could tell she was troubled at the situation before her.

“Ok, so when he was about to escape, one of them gave him a fatal stab due to how outnumbered he was… therefore concluded what happened here…”

Ray then nods as he then walks over towards her. Audrey was going this far to help in order to get the full truth. It’s better to fulfill his end of the deal than risk things.

“You and I can get Mistin home first. Then we’ll inform a cleaning crew what happened, I’ll the person who confronted the situation and “tried” to help.”

“Are you calling them or am I?”

“I’ll call, if you were here it’s going to be suspicious.”

“As if I wasn’t called already… so yeah I’m going to be suspicious.”

“Ok! Ok… you came over because I was I need of medical assistance-“

“Do I look like a Medic to you?”

“Audrey…”

“Ok ok! Fine. Sounds like a….. complicated yet perfectly executed plan.”

Ray and Audrey quickly make their way to Mistin’s apartment and make sure nobody spots them together since Audrey was still in uniform. She made sure to put their cape over Mistin as well, luckily it was easy to remove. Audrey made sure Mistin was properly taken care of by washing off the now dry blood from both their wound, and their face. Suddenly Mistin woke up scaring the two, however Audrey noticed how they didn’t seem to fully awake, Audrey suggested a shower for them and Mistin agreed without knowing it wasn’t all a dream. While Ray and Audrey waited. Audrey still looks at Ray, expecting something from him. Ray noticed they’re stare.

“What?”

“I believe you’re forgetting another part of our deal.”

Ray immediately knew what she was referring to, wishing she’d forgotten. However nothing ever slips past Sparks. Or to say the least… Audrey Cinder… it was both incredibly useful and incredibly annoying in their sidekick era. Audrey however waited patiently as he released a sigh. As he spoke.

“What?”

“3 years ago I saw them… I was doing my usual routine and was on my way for my next assignment for the night, when I saw them robbing the house of legislator Keck. I was going to quickly take care of them….”

Audrey saw him pondering for a bit, wondering what exactly was the problem.

“I couldn’t bring myself to do it. It was an odd feeling. Before that exact moment, I never really had any trouble of getting rid of criminals.”

“You did mention one time you truly believed that if someone committed a crime they were opening themselves up for punishment… what exactly did Mistin do to change that?”

Ray lets out a light laugh.

“What?”

“You sound like one of those interviewers when saying that.”

“Oh shut up! You know what I mean… what exactly changed?”

“I’m not sure. All I know was that they were nervous picking up the cat and then suddenly the cat took the mask they had on off and…. Their smile…”

Audrey sees Ray smile, which they rarely see a genuine smile out of him, he smile’s remembering exactly how it went.

“Their smile made me feel something different I couldn’t believe I’d be capable of feeling before, I just stayed there seeing them with the cat I had to remember them somehow when I encounter them again. So I took a picture before they spotted me. Something in me couldn’t compute that they were a criminal.”

“Ray…”

“They had a bag of everything they came for, jewels, money, blackmail… so without a doubt they were a criminal. But I couldn’t bring my to… dispose of them.”

“Ray……”

“So I became more curious. I kept trying to predict where they would hit next, just so I could catch a glimpse at them. Sometimes right, sometimes wrong.”

“Ray! You’re-“

Audrey takes a deep breath and exhales. Looking at him, they could not believe what she just heard but she heard it…

“Ray… this behavior isn’t… healthy… its- do you even know what you’re admitting to right now?”

Ray laughs as Audrey grows more concerned.

“I guess i became a little…. Obsessed. They broke my ideals I had fo figure out why they were the cause.”

“Why not say anything?”

“I couldn’t just talk to them. If them, a petty criminal knew they were on ‘Binary Star’s’ radar, they would’ve disappeared from the city, possibly even the country the next day.”

“But they did didn’t they?”

Ray nodded, Audrey’s concern was now more at Mistin than Ray, first then getting kidnapped now this? They knew the Binary Star they knew was a guy who wasn’t too much in helping out with “hero” assignments especially in public but this… was on a more difficult level to understand more new…

“By that time I didn’t realize how much of me depended on them…! Couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat. Mistin was all I thought about. They become-“

“Your Binary Star….”

“…. Without them my balance was off. I became a zombie during the day, and smile and say what they wanted me to say. And at night I sought them out. Until 3 weeks ago, I found them… I transferred to work in this city, purchased the condo, formulated the perfect plan to meet them…”

—————————————————————————————

As soon as the water hit Mistin’s body they were awake and more alert… however hear the conversation or more likely confession outside their bathroom door was all the more disturbing than comforting… they thought Ray was a stroke of luck… little did they know he was a man of the past coming back to try and get them to fall for a trick… the words they heard they didn’t want to be true…

“They were never supposed to figure out that I was Binary Star. I was hoping they’d fall for ether me or him… not both… or figure out I’m both… however…. Mistin once mentioned they hated liars… so I couldn’t exactly keep it from them… I couldn’t let them think that I was someone that had to hate… I’d rather have-“

“Ray! All of this is fucking crazy… do you not realize what you’ve technically done by attempting to do this? Oh my god…”

Audrey hands were in her hair pacing in the room. Ray trying to reason with her.

“Audrey I know it sounds bad but just realize what this means for everybody here on this planet ever.”

“What…?”

Mistin’s eyes widen at this.

“If Mistin didn’t exist… I would’ve most likely given up already and let the aliens do whatever the hell they wanted…. And all I had to do was play clean up…”

Both Audrey and Mistin were stunned, Audrey more fearful about her father, and how if it wasn’t for Mistin they’re father would’ve died and she wouldn’t have been able to save him… Mistin however, realized how much they’ve been able to do just by being alive…… however as a person who could keep this guy who people call a “hero” at by from destroying the whole planet…… keeping their family alive and possibly innocent family members alive also… Ray sighs rubbing his head in frustration.

“I wasn’t expecting their old “friend” to show up and try and chase them down… he truly won’t stop till he’s six feet under… after 3 whole years I can to the conclusion that they were what matters. Not crime, not justice, not criminals, or villains, or civilians, or even earth itself. It’s-“

“Me…”

Audrey and Ray look to see a mostly dry Mistin in the pajamas which Audrey picked in a panic. Ray seemingly more a less calmer than Audrey was.

“How long-“

“The point where he said cat… you’ve been searching for 3 whole years… I- I don’t even wanna know how far you went…”

“Mistin….” He stepped closer to them and took their hands in his.

“I promise I will keep you safe. I may not be the shining hero from the stars that everyone claims I am….. but I will by your hero.”

Mistin knew thank you wasn’t really a right response but however couldn’t ignore how he practically just shattered more than just a sliver of their trust… they look away, disappointed…. Ray’s smile turns into a frown. He looks at Audrey, she could only look away… she couldn’t save him in this situation… they took back their hands and looked at him.

“Ray… how am I able to trust you after this? You could’ve just approached me no problem-“

“But-“

“As Ray! Idiot… I would’ve been fine with it if you hadn’t been so… so-”

Mistin didn’t want to say the words they were thinking, but how could they not? They couldn’t tolerate this……. All they knew was that they were tired and needed time… especially after everything that had happened… especially… Ripley…..

“You’re going to have to give me time… cause right now I don’t need this…. You can try to earn my trust back…. But… it’s going to take more time….”

They move past Ray, Ray tries to go after them, but Audrey stops him. Shaking her head.

‘I know you can hear me… but it isn’t the end of the world.. you just need to give them time… they need space… at least give them that.’

Ray didn’t answer, looking at Mistin and then to Audrey, he then only quietly walked out the door. Audrey standing there, soon hearing Mistin sobbing quietly, they look to see them shaking. Audrey sat on the edge of their bed. Not knowing what to say or do. Only siting there trying to help keep them company, especially after everything they heard… and well… experienced…

—————————————————————————————

Ray was outside the apartment, not knowing what to do, did they mess up already? Did he really need to build trust again? What if he got his hands on an ability that would make them forget everything? Would that be too messed up? Ray was just there thinking it over, and over. Where he went wrong, how did it all end up going down hill. His plan was working only for it to crash and burn into ashes. Suddenly the words Mistin said before came to mind. Giving them time, and gaining back their trust slowly… and how if he approached them as Ray 3 years ago there would’ve probably never been a problem… if he did talk to them as Ray all those years ago, would it have changed anything?

The door suddenly opened and closed. He looked at Audrey sighing as they begin walking.

“Where are you going?”

“Home. It’s late.”

“What? Audrey-“

“No! Ray! You need to understand that not everyone is capable of going through situations like that? Do you have any idea what exactly Mistin could’ve gone through during their time as a villain?”

“Audrey-“

“I sure can’t because I’ve never been one! And I’ve surely never had to run away to escape such a life! For fuck sake Ray think for once… you think it’s a good idea for a Hero! A FUCKING HERO to try and talk to someone who’s been wanting nothing but a chaos free life?”

Ray stood there silently. Audrey shook her head in disappointment.

“For a guy who’s the top “hero” of the country… you sure don’t deserve it…”

Ray stood there, seeing Audrey’s burning rage in her eyes as she turns and walks away. He didn’t know how to respond… he didn’t. Know what to do… all he knew was that Mistin needed someone to protect them right now… but… was he really going to protect them with how their relationship was now?

This situation gotten even more complicated… and now… he’s going to have to try and make up for it…

But… how…..

Chapter 7: The Spark that Burns.

Summary:

Audrey, the Spark trained underneath the hero of the Stars. Though she wants to prove her achievements by doing things herself, the shadow of the Star hero never left her alone.

Chapter Text

The sound of the city rang familiar through Audrey’s ears, the city life never sleeps, and so she’s yet to rest easy. She still need to check on her father, he’s still sick, she can’t leave him all alone, at least not for the remainder of how long he’s got left.
As the light turned to a walking signal, she didn’t hesitate to take a step forward along with the tired faces along the crowd.

Thoughts of the day of when her dad was in an accident because of her only to find out he was sick while on duty was not only a shock, but a sense of betrayal for her. The fact he didn’t tell her made her feel like she was still the child who wasn’t aware of what’s going on. She hated the feeling.

As she finally made it to Mistin’s apartment she knocked out a secret code, to make sure Mistin knew it wasn’t the person who was hunting them down like a wild animal.

“Hey…”

Mistin’s voice sounded tired as they opened the door to see Audrey, as she peaked in she could see some paper scattered, along with a laptop that was open.

“Long day?”

“Guess you could say that…”

“Mind if i-…”

“Ah, hold on a sec…”

Mistin closed the door real quick, as Audrey only heard some scuffled movements from her side. When Mistin finally opened the door again she was allowed in.

“I’m assuming it’s about… him?”

Mistin rubbed their neck, it seemed to be a habit for when they were obviously caught or nervous. Audrey sighs and just sets down the groceries.

“He’s ok, but… I wouldn’t want to look up his background on the internet… too risky.”

“So… if I do…”

“Someone might find you…”

“The NAHA….”

“Mhm.”

The silence in the room was loud, Mistin finally sighs as they then go over to their laptop and look over the so called research that could potentially be false. Audrey finally walks over and sees a familiar picture of Ray, yet also in an unfamiliar military uniform.

“Wait… where did you find this?”

“Some odd thread… no idea why they had it on the internet to begin with.”

“You didn’t…. Try to talk with them… right?”

“No, too risky… by their last chat logs it seems like they were found out and taken out. Ashame since I would’ve like to know what I was getting myself into…”

‘They shouldn’t have tried to expose him online to begin with. Who would be so reckless?’

“Ether way, it’s odd to see this here.. I thought the NAHA would’ve covered for Ray… unless… is this from some type of shady web or something?”

“Kind of… feels more like a trap if anything… anyone looking for the truth about him ends up on the hit list. Go figure…”

Audrey’s eyes glazed over at the chats to Mistin’s expression. Audrey only knew little about Ray… that was fact, but hearing upon information that the NAHA doesn’t want to be public wasn’t exactly new either. There are some things the NAHA will use against her if she were to share anything at all. They have to keep their heroes on a tight leash after all… especially after…

Audrey shook her head, she didn’t want to think of how the murder of Blaze wasn’t just an “accident” or some big act of “betrayal” between two heros. As if it were either of those… she quickly exited out of the chatroom Mistin had and impulsively pointed at a random post while trying to put up a smile of reassurance.

“Um… why not try looking at something else. Like this?”

Mistin looks at the screen and then to Audrey. Why did they look like that?

“Um… Binary Star, fanfic writing tips…?”

Once Audrey heard what Mistin said, she looks over at the screen. She felt her face heat up with embarrassment. Why did it have to be that of all things she had to point at to change the topic.

“I- ok that’s not what I wanted to-….”

“Pffft- hahaha!”

Audrey in surprise looked as Mistin laughed. Seeing them finally relax was actually refreshing, Audrey awkwardly laughed as well, especially since it was mostly a rushed moment to change the topic.

“Ha… but to think he didn’t have fanfiction about him would be considered weird. I mean, considering how popular he is.”

“You think?”

“Don’t you have some?”

“Well…. I tend not to look into what my fans do, after… looking one time…”

“Ah, I see…”

“Mhm….”

“I wonder what type of odd things they write up about him though.”

“You… want to look?”

“You want to?”

Audrey looks away and then back. She can’t say she wasn’t curious, after all, she could find something funny out of it.

“Definitely.”

“Ok first one… ah here.”

After some time, Audrey and Mistin both had different reactions and were both impressed with how some of the fanfiction’s portrayed Binary Star well.

“My god… do they seriously write him like that?”

“Seems like it.”

“Well I can’t exactly imagine Ray, saying these lines… I mean I do recall a show or movie trying to show an origin story of him once.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, I forgot what it’s called… I’m not sure if people payed attention or even looked for it.”

“Hm… what if we go to the more… risky parts?”

“Ew, seriously?”

“I mean… I’m curious.”

“…”

“…”

“Fuck it, let me see.”

Audrey was more weirded out, while Mistin cringed at how they portrayed Binary Star when he’s horny. That was not something she wanted to view Ray as… yet curiosity killed the cat…. Now she regrets it.

“Just to have your body once-…. Is that supposed to be….”

“Oh come on it’s not real.”

“Yeah but, do people really write fake scenarios of their favorite heroes fucking them?”

“You wanna hear the rest?”

“No thanks. If anything I’m not interested in hearing how he fucks the female self insert.”

“Haha!”

Audrey didn’t want to think of Ray that way, but had to let the cat be curious… and now it’s dead…. And it’s now wondering what the hell her fans have written about her… Jesus Christ if it’s like Ray’s she might as well not go out in public again.
With that Audrey sighs as Mistin continues to look. A sudden frown on their face appears, catching Audrey’s attention.

“Something up?”

“Does Ray actually care?”

“What?”

“About me? Care about me…”

Mistin plays with the laptop a bit, a little swig back and forth. The pink on Mistin’s cheeks being more obvious by the minute. Audrey thinks back to the strange times he walked out of work to go on break, or to simply help Mistin without a second thought. She may not have seen the bloody massacre that happened in the warehouse, but she knew it wasn’t like him to do such a thing unless the NAHA were to say it was deemed an important person.

“Well, as far as I’m concerned. I’ve never seen him like this before… like… more eager to protect someone.”

“…”

With that Mistin closed the laptop, looking out the window. The sun was setting again.

“I feel like I’m getting a bit stir crazy…. Maybe it’s just me…”

“I know it may feel like that but… it’s better to stay here protected, than out there unprotected.”

“Yeah…. Your right.. I just.. wish it wasn’t like this. Yes I would’ve love to get to know Ray more if given the chance but… right now…”

Mistin sighs, Audrey looks as Mistin, she was wondering what exactly they were thinking, the situation was interesting to say the least. She couldn’t believe these two have a lot to say but choose not to talk it out, yet again…. What Mistin witnessed, was not exactly a common romantic gesture. It was was more.. traumatic… Going to see the massacre herself upon helping Ray, they were just unlucky that they saw some of the torsos separated from their bodies….
Even thinking about it leaves an uncomfortable feeling….

“Ray… isn’t the best guy… that’s my truth…”

Mistin looks at her, Audrey shifts a bit nervously. She didn’t want to lie for him, she didn’t want to lie to herself ether. Saying he’s a good guy…. It’s questionable to her…. Taking advantage of her situation did annoy and anger the hell out of her, even her current situation is questionable….

“I mean… the NAHA, isn’t the the best with employing mentally well heros ether… Ray’s… he’s not innocent… not all heros are…. Even me.”

“You?”

“A pretty face doesn’t always mean innocent… the system is fucked, and so are the hero’s.”

Audrey sighs, Mistin lays their head on her shoulder. Seems like something in their relationship changed today.

“I’m not innocent ether, who am I judge?”

“Hehe… Ray’s never acted like that before though…”

“Hm?”

“Like… well, how he is around you, trying to… impress you and stuff… genuine smile. So relaxed…. Sure he’s had relationships before… but they never really had that ‘spark’ if you get what I mean.”

Mistin took their head off Audrey’s shoulder, the look of qenuine curiosity across their face…

“I know this is easy for me to say since I’m not in the spot your in…”

Audrey placed a hand on Mistin’s shoulder, patting it. As if to reassure them.

“Maybe give him a chance to gain back your trust. Who knows… you both look like you need it. Trust I mean…”

The sound of the door opening and closing caught both of their attention. Ray stood there, noticing the hand on Mistin’s shoulder, his masked face seeming to give a look of both curiosity and awkwardness.

“Did I interrupt something?”

“No! Ahem… no, I was just giving them a bit of advice…”

Audrey said as Mistin just looked at her. Soon Audrey glanced at Ray, then to his hero suit, tears and bits of blood stains on it, till seeing a nasty gash.

“Was that an alien’s doing?”

“Oh- um… don’t worry about it.”

Ray did his best to cover it with his arm. Audrey couldn’t believe this guy… seriously coming here hurt even though he’s had her of all people as a sidekick, for years… she’s made a fuss over serious wounds before, so why does he think now is any different?

“Um… you can… use my shower to help wash it… along with other wounds you might have.”

Audrey and Ray were both taken aback by Mistin’s offer. They looked at each other for a second.

“You don’t have to… I just-“

“No no! It’s fine… you really don’t mind?”

“Well… I don’t necessarily think you’ll fit in my clothes so…”

“No need to worry… I was just going to bandage myself up and change, I just can’t promise I don’t smell entirely horrible right now…”

“Oh, it’s fine… go ahead. If you need any help I um… I can or Audrey can- um…”

Audrey could sense the awkward moment between the two, at least it was an effort to establish trust… she sighs.

“Ray, go shower… Mistin, do you have an emergency sewing kit?”

“Uh… what for?”

“For sewing up wounds?”

“Oh… I only have bandages..”

Audrey sighs, and gestured Ray to go and shower. When he went to do so, Audrey and Mistin went to find some spare bandages, and a bit of rubbing alcohol.

“This is all you have?”

“That and a first aid kit… in the bathroom…”

“I see…”

Audrey looks at Mistin’s leg. The bandages reminded them of that moment of chaos where what used to be Warning Crescent.

“How’s the leg doing?”

“Oh… um… it’s not hurting so bad as before…”

“I see…”

Audrey handed the bandages over to Mistin.

“Hey uh.. Mistin?”

Ray’s voice behind the door to the bathroom was heard.

“Yeah?”

“Could you… help me reach a spot? It’s hard to reach…”

Audrey knew where this could lead… more trust building. And hopefully not one of Those situations….

“Go ahead.”

“Uh… yeah coming in.”

Audrey gave Mistin a thumbs up before they went into the bathroom, hoping that it would lead to anything more. Especially wounded….

Mistin closed the door behind them and immediately took a deep breath.

“Ok what is- HOLY- mmmm!”

“Shit- sorry, should’ve warned you… the gash is pretty bad…”

“No it’s not that- your top half is- how are you so- right fucking hero… but god damn…”

“I believe you forgot to say that in your mind…”

“Sorry just-… wow…”

Ray chuckled a bit, a familiar chuckle that caused them to relax a bit. Shaking their head to focus.

“Ok! Um… what did you need help with?”

“Just this… one on my back… like I said… I can’t reach it… if you don’t feel comfortable doing it… I’ll just hope the water cleans it good enough.”

“No I can help.”

With that Mistin takes what’s in his hand, reading the bottle, a bit surprised.

“Hydrogen peroxide, this tends to stall some of the healing process…”

“You sound like you have some experience.”

“You already know I used to be a small villain, of course I experimented a bit with some medical equipment… even I was a little too curious…”

“Well… you never know what exactly the aliens have or been through…”

“Fair point… but soap and water can also still be a good cleaner.”

“I’ll take your word for it Star.”

‘Star…’

That nickname… it felt nice to hear again after so long… when was the last time he called them that? Two… three weeks ago? Has it been a week? They weren’t sure. The sudden knock on the door startled them.

“Better not be up to what I think you two are doing! Your both aren’t fully healed to do any of that! Also I’m still here!”

“Ah! No no! Just talking about what’s a better cleaner for wounds.”

“Uh huh… sure…”

Mistin felt their face was about to explode, holy shit… was it really that long already?
They heard Ray’s laugh.

“Better get this over with before they think we are going to do something.”

“Don’t start!”

Mistin poured the hydrogen peroxide on the wound, surprised at his last of reaction… did his job seriously make him get used to such pain?
With that Mistin left the bathroom to meet a glaring Audrey.

“what?”

“Ahem!”

“Oh- no! We didn’t- it’s not like that!”

“What took you so long then?”

“Well… um… I may or may not have… been surprised by his… upper half… exposed…”

“…”

“….”

“Yep… should’ve keep those thoughts out the door…”

“You think?”

Audrey looked away ashamed of thinking that way, even so, the two had a connection unlike the others who had none with him.
After Ray was finally done was she able to see how tired he was, unlike other times she saw him in public, seeming more distant from reality. As if he were playing a role.

“You made sure to bandage the gash right?”

“Yes, don’t worry about it.”

“Just checking.”

Audrey watched as he gone to sit down next to Mistin on the couch that was in Mistin’s apartment. No matter how hard he tried, it was obvious he was drawn to their presence, like a magnetic pull.
Audrey starts to grab their bag as Mistin turns their head toward her.

“Your leaving?”

“Ray’s here, and he’s bandaged up, I don’t see another reason to stay.”

Audrey goes to the door to leave only for Mistin to meet them at the door, she could tell that they were nervous to stay with him alone again. Knowing fully well they themselves would feel awkward if they were put into such situation out of their control. Audrey decided to give some words of advice one more time, gesturing them to lean in to do so. Luckily the door was out of view from the couch where Ray sat.

“If you’re still unsure about how he feels or what he’s planning, try and give him a false sense of trust.”

“Do you think that’ll work?”

“He can read minds… not pictures.”

Mistin gave a confused look, Audrey gave a little wave of both goodbye and good luck. After shutting the door behind her, she walks a good amount of distance from the apartment, finally letting her mind have its thoughts. She could never fully trust Ray. That was her truth, she never once trusted him with her life, however knew that she did have to keep up appearances for a crowd, the people were watching, and the show’s never fully over until the audience finally saw enough.
Even as a sidekick, she never felt like she could trust him with those red eyes that she herself was scared of. Only knowing that if the NAHA wanted to, she could be taken out anytime.

She was truthful when she said she wasn’t fully innocent, Audrey herself had her own crimes committed. Remembering the blood on her hands, the feeling of the cold water against her palm as to wash it off… the metallic smell..

Oh yes… she remembered it all…

Her hero suit splattered with some blood, folded on a chair to set aside to wash, wearing only a tank top and sweatpants… the room she decided to clean herself in felt so small… the emotions rushing through her mind… only for a knock and a familiar voice to come through the door.

“Sparks, are you done in there?”

Hershel, of course he’s here. She quickly splashed her face with water and turned off the sink. Opening the door.

“Ah, there you are. Your first assignment was satisfactory, for a new sidekick.”

“Mhm…”

Hershel noticed the tone in her hum of agreement. He sighed, he placed his phone in his pocket.

“If you’re going to become a hero, you’re going to get these types of assignments sometimes. I get it’s… not what the public expects for their hero’s but it’s our responsibility to get the job done. You understand?”

The young Audrey looks at Hershel. A blank stare as another voice chimes in.

“It’s her first assignment, of course she’s shaken up. What did you expect?”

Ray looked at the red haired girl as she avoided his gaze, only for him to cross his arms.

“He isn’t wrong, you’ll be expected to take out some villains. This may be your first time doing so, but remember that they’re the ones asking for it.”

Audrey looks at Ray, the lack of empathy, the lack of emotion… it never felt right to her, she knew he was the top hero of the country, but was he really this cold or used to it?
Audrey then looks to the ground, taking a breath.

“I understand…”

“Good. Ray, make sure she’s good to leave.”

Ray only nodded as Hershel leaves, leaving her alone with Ray, she attempted to go back in the room to get her suit before feeling his presence grow near her.

“Thinking that way about me isn’t going to get you anywhere.”

‘What…’

Why did he say that as if he could read her thoughts… unless…
A chill ran down her spine, she could feel the piercing gaze go into the back of her head. Was she scared? Of course she was… she knows fear.. yet this felt different.. like a fear in headlights or a someone who’s neutralized and can’t move.

“You’ve gotten this far, why now are you scared?”

‘This guy he’s-‘

“Insane? A bastard? Go ahead, finish your thought on me. As if I haven’t heard it before.”

Her heart was beating in her ears, the cold sweat on her skin. She was cornered, as if caged like a rabbit.

“Just because you’re my sidekick, doesn’t mean I’ll be all buddy buddy with you.. the sooner you learn the better.”

He really thought she was doing this to befriend him? As if she had a choice to be his sidekick… She only took the offer because she knew it would be a stepping stone for her to have a better chance at having a good pay and chance of living comfortably with her father… if he knew the struggles of her life, what exactly would be his excuse for treating her like this?

“….As if I needed your help…”

“Excuse me?”

Audrey slowly turned to face him, his red eyes sticking out like a sore thumb. Even though she was scared, she wasn’t going to let him think for one second that she wouldn't work for her spot.

“I don’t… need you’re help. I never wanted it.”

Rays eyes narrowed, as Audrey stared at him in defiance, her hands shaking beside her.

“Really…”

“I only took the opportunity so I can get a good step in my career, I won’t deny it. But you need to know that not everyone is willing to suck up to you to build something for themselves.”

The two glare at each other for awhile before finally Ray backs away.

“Then tell me, what exactly are you going to do while you’re my sidekick then?”

Audrey then forces herself to smile, she couldn’t falter, and she had to prove she didn’t need his name to get what she wanted. She WAS going to make it herself.

“I won’t call for you, I won’t trust you with my life, I don’t need a hero. I’ll be my own hero. A better hero than you ever were.”

Ray laughed a bit, yet no humor was there. He then looked at her, more interested in what she was trying to pull off.

“Tell you what, if you manage to survive as my sidekick for long enough, I’ll take your word for it.”

“Deal, but I’d like to add another condition.”

“Name it.”

“Delete my contact after I become a hero.”

Ray was taken back a bit, but still smiled. This was definitely a good change of pace.

“Deal. Better not slack off.”

Ray begins to lean on the wall. As Audrey turns back to the door, her hand now on the handle.

‘As if I had a choice….’

Audrey stops at the red light, waiting for the sigh to show they’re able to walk. The buzz from their phone causes them to come back to reality.
Taking it out, the contact name being Ray.

‘So much for our deal…’

See looked at the text message on the Lock Screen.

Ray
What did you tell Mistin before you left?

She sighs as she opens her phone to text him back. She didn’t have to tell him anything, yet he didn’t even try to listen in? Maybe he’s getting too used to reading minds…

Audrey
Just some words of advice to deal with you. Did something happen?

Ray
Well, after you left they just so happened to be comfortable with me all of a sudden.

That’s when Audrey got confused, isn’t that what he wanted?

Audrey
You’re seriously texting me over that?

Ray
Well, that and they’re kinda awkward.

Audrey
Ray, that's normal. Also, it is awkward because they did over hear us talking about you stalking them for three whole years.

Ray
Yeah but I think that’s normal, however the way they tried to talk to me casually was weird…

Audrey
What’s weird? Everything about the two of you is weird. Look, just talk to them, I’m not a relationship expert.

With that she let out an annoyed sigh. Another odd thing she’d say is unlike him is that he’s strangely acting like she’s someone to talk to. It’s not like him to suddenly text her about random things such as things like dating, he’s already been in multiple relationships. She can get that they’ve been casual around Mistin and saw that as a key to get close to them.

But why still talk to them afterward?

Audrey looks back at some text messages after the day she was contacted after being caught at Waning Crescent once.

The moment she saw Ray, was when she decided she had to go, she however didn’t know he already noticed her as he got his coffee. She didn’t notice that he was actually there for Mistin at the time.
When she thought she was away from Ray she sighed in relief, thinking she won’t have to deal with encountering him again. Until the she took out her phone and saw the reflection from behind her.

“Audrey.”

“AGH!”

She nearly dropped her phone as she hurried to back away from him. His coffee in hand, why was he here?

“Someone’s happy to see me.”

“What are you doing here? I thought we agreed after I become a hero you and I won’t contact each other.”

“Well… I was actually wanting to ask you something.”

“That being?”

“Do you know Mistin well?”

“…huh?…”

Audrey at first was caught off guard by the question, why was he asking her that?

“Look I’m going to tell you shit, we both agreed-“

He took her phone as she was speaking and hurriedly added his contact to her phone.

“Here. Tell me when they’re in.”

“Wha- what the fuck is wrong with you?”

Ray just stood there as Audrey took her phone back, already going to delete his contact again.

“You know, it’s been three years since we’ve last spoke. Since I am transferring here, you’ll probably need my contact if you need any extra help.”

Audrey looked at him, looking up and down if there was a catch.

“What’s gotten into you?”

He shrugged, as he then pats his hand on her shoulder. Audrey was clearly confused by his current behavior toward her. What did he want?

“Let’s not cause any trouble for the both of us. Your… you’re a good kid.”

The sentence caused her to stand there stunned for a moment, as he then goes to leave her there, she looks at him as he walks away. This wasn’t the Ray she knew… or at least.. she thinks….
Looking at the contact name Ray displayed across the screen, it was odd to see it there after three years…

Even looking at it in the present, it still felt off. She still doesn’t fully trust him. However she’ll keep her promise… she wont call for him when she needs a hero. She wont ask for his helping hand when in danger.

She doesn't need a hero.

She’s her own hero now.

At least… she hopes she is…

She had her own problems to worry about… that don’t include him.

“Audrey, good to see you.”

“Hey dad..”

Chapter 8: Incapable

Summary:

Now onto Creed, the little brother of Mistin, what is he thinking at this moment? Worrying for his remaining family, his friends are there to help ease his worry. He can’t shake the feeling that they’re in danger though.

Notes:

Might do a rewrite later so keep an eye out.

Chapter Text

The feeling of dread, the helplessness, the feeling of pain. Creed holds his stomach as his broken bloody nose drips onto the ground. The child picked on until it came to a point of physical violence. The kicking blow came fast, this felt like it was lasting forever for him. The older kids laughed saying to toughen up and stop crying. He was scared, he was a child. It was only when a familiar face jumped on the big kid who was attacking him. Doing everything they can to make the kid stop long enough for him to run to find someone. He didn’t want to leave them behind. It was only when their older brother arrived that the fighting finally stopped. Jessie glared as they were practically torn off the young aggressor. They’re older brother discovered his abilities when he was thirteen and he discovered it could be used to heal but he’d take the injuries in the process. Later on to discover he could also transfer them to anyone if he isn’t careful. Jessie, their sibling, hadn't discovered they’re ability yet. Jessie knew they’re older brother wouldn’t let this slide, so they covered their eyes, and tried to cover their ears. The faint agonizing scream, and the brief get lost from his brother was enough to scare the older kid off.

“You ok Creed?”

He only nodded, still a bit teary eyed while in Jessie’s arms. His brother wiped away the tears as he used his ability, the slight trembling of him taking the pain caused him to worry till he said it was fine. He only smiled.

“Vance, don’t you think mom and dad will get a call about this?”

“I’m the oldest anyway, I should look after you guys. You should be more careful Jessie.”

“I went to defend my brother, I wasn’t trying to defend myself.”

“That’s not what I meant, I meant jumping in recklessly.”

“Whatever Vance… At least Creed is ok.”

Jessie rolled their eyes. Talking to Creed as they head back home together with their older brother Vance.

————————————————————————

Creed, hearing the alarm, jumped a bit, they’re mind still in a tired state. These memories were appearing more in his dreams. He realized he fell asleep on the counter. He’d been worried about his sibling Mistin, he tried calling, he even tried texting. Nothing.

He sighs as he sees nothing from them. Considering how they’re own leg had a deep cut from the ruble, he can’t help but worry. A buzz from his phone snapped him out of his thoughts.

‘Haley..’

Haley:
Morning, me and Miles are taking care of some things. Hope your doing ok.

He couldn’t help but smile to himself, Haley has been a huge help since he came to the city. Once he was done with his studies, he decided to try and find a better job. When looking around they saw Haley wave them over and tell him they were hiring. Though he isn’t experienced with making coffee, he was glad Hal helped him out when they did. He started thinking maybe they could be something more after some time working together.

The pink on his face is clear, at least nobody is around. Such thoughts made him question if Hal wanted that to.

‘What am I thinking, what if they have someone else in mind?’

He sighed, turning off his phone. He needed a shower, maybe that could calm down such thoughts. Change of clothes since he slept in the clothes from yesterday. After he was done he went ahead to brush his teeth, when he heard the doorbell he panicked a bit.

“Hold on!”

After putting on clothes he decided to see who it was. The cloth drying his hair.

“Haley?”

He opened the door.

“Hey, didn’t expect you to be here… again.”

“Well, I just thought you could use the company.”

“Heeey Creed!”

“Oh, hey Miles. You two wanna come inside?”

Allowing the two inside, he made sure he offered drinks. Miles took some water, while Haley said no.

“So was it just company or is it about work?”

Creed tried to joke.

“Not exactly, but you did see through me.”

“So what is it?”

“It’s Mistin.”

Creed immediately looked at Haley.

“Mistin? Are they ok? Where are they?”

“Whoa chill out.”

Miles added in. Creed immediately backed off and cleared his throat.

“Sorry, but they haven’t contacted me at all since…”

“It’s fine, I would be worried too. I heard through people that Mistin is at home or skipped town.”

“What?”

“Ether could be true… however, to figure out if it’s true is to go there ourselves.”

“Does that mean we’re going to see Mistin after this?”

Haley shook their head at Miles' question.

“I think it’s better if Mistin only meets one of us, I’ll go to check in on them.”

“You sure? Shouldn’t Creed go?”

“Miles, the both of them went through an alien attack, so maybe it’s better if Creed stays here, who knows… Mistin could’ve been traumatized due to this… being in the attack.”

‘Mistin didn’t look like they were though… so what happened afterwards is probably the problem…’

“Everything ok Creed?”

“I’m fine… it’s just.. Mistin didn’t look at all traumatized during the attack, didn’t even freeze at the sight of such destructive creatures ....”

“That does seem odd. I’ll have to look into it.”

“You really don’t have to. If anything Binary Star-“

‘No… what if he found out about Martin's criminal history? What if Mistin got taken away….’

Creed shook his head, no way Mistin would be that obvious… would they? Mistin isn’t one to show off their past. Let alone their criminal life…. He needed proof that Mistin wasn’t where he thought they were.

“Just… be sure to let me know if they’re alright.”

Haley, though curious, nodded. Reading the room.

“Well, I’ll be sure to pay Mistin a visit, you ok if Miles stays here?”

“Oh come on Hal, I don’t cause that much trouble.”

“You’d be surprised how much you are.”

Creed and Haley said goodbye at the door. Leaving Miles and Creed alone in his apartment.

Haley on the other hand, knew something was up when he brought up Binary Star. They knew Binary Star helped someone during the attack but didn’t think it would be Mistin. Creed only said little upon the situation. So to hear Binary Star helped Mistin, only raised suspicions.

What if he was keeping an eye on them?

An idea came to mind, Mistin was their friend too, they’d do anything to help.

Even if it meant running from Binary Star himself.

———————————————————————

Miles dozed off a while ago, Creed couldn’t help but laugh a bit. Despite the situation, a bit of familiarity was comforting, even in a situation like this.

Creed could only hope Haley was just talking with Mistin now, when it comes to walking from his place to Mistin’s, he’d be doing the same. At the same time however…. Such thoughts of Mistin leaving plague his thoughts.

He already left to go study for a higher education, not only to have a temporary get out for the situation between him and Jace, but also to try and not be a burden once he got his shot together, when Mist gave him that chance to leave when they could’ve left earlier instead, that’s when he realized he couldn’t depend on them. He needed time to figure himself out before facing them again. He worked his ass off to make sure he could stand on his own, he made sure that he focused on his goal to be there when Mistin needed him.

In this case however, it seemed like Mistin still didn’t get it, he wasn’t the same Creed he was when he was as a kid or in his villain career with them. He thought they could see that, yet he was proven wrong….

He was hoping maybe if they did leave perhaps a message didn’t go through saying goodbye along with an explanation saying a reason, or maybe saying how they noticed maybe during the attack when he went in to save them they’d realize….

No, that's selfish…. If anything this is about Mistin, he needed to know if they were alright. Just to calm his anxiety, just a simple “Hey” or anything would be fine….

So why was there nothing?

He had his head in his hands, his fingers running through his hair, the unease of thinking something happened was so worrying, he couldn’t just settle for total silence unless there was a reason for it.

A third buzz of his phone snapped him back from his deep thought, when he flipped it over to face him, his eyes widened in surprise on the ID and quickly rushed to answer.

Mistin, it was then! Finally!

“Mist? Hi- um hello.”

“Hey….”

The awkward silence in the call was very thick it could but cut with a knife. There were so many things he wanted to ask and say.

Are you ok?

How’s your leg, did you get it stitched?

Did Binary Star do anything?

Why didn’t you call or text after what happened?!

Are you able to speak freely?

What happened?

He needed to be clear but also understanding upon the situation, take a breath and then talk.

“Are you doing ok?”

Creed could hear Mistin shift a bit through the phone, something was definitely wrong.

“Not… really..”

“You sound unsure…”

“Are you playing Captain obvious?”

“Just asking… you know you can talk to me.”

“I met double… after so long…”

“WHAT!”

“Ow… tone it down.”

“Mistin, this is serious! No wonder you’ve been quiet, wait does this mean you’re going to leave?”

“Creed….”

“You should leave, if anything you have to, we both know he won’t stop till-“

“Creed.”

“Ah, sorry… just… you know how serious this is right?”

A slight pause, and the faint sound of a deep breath comes through.

“I know…”

“Mistin…”

“I just thought I’d let you know I’m still alive… and that… I might skip town…”

He felt time freeze for a minute, despite the obvious response to hearing double is back is to run and hide again… but how long would they run? How long until double finally meets his match and dies? Or he’s six feet under? If anything Mis- Jessie… can’t run or hide, double is going to chase them till he has them… the reality of this… was unfair…

“Creed?”

“I-…. I’m still here… I’m glad you told me this.”

“I know it’s hard to hear-“

“You have to leave.”

“Wha-“

“You have to get out while you can and not look back, trust me when I say to never look back. Please… you can’t let him catch you….”

The silence was even quieter now, Creed on the other hand, though saddened to say his possible final goodbye, he knew he couldn’t be selfish, especially in this situation.

‘If he ever does I don’t know what I’d do….’

He didn’t have an ability to fight back, he didn’t stand a chance. He learned that the hard way….

“Could we at least… talk for a bit though?”

Mistin with the hint of sorrow in their voice, asked as they already knew it would probably be their last conversation…. Creed couldn’t say no… this was going to be something he’d allow himself to have before possibly having this as their last interaction.

“Of course, we can talk until however long you want.”

“Thank you.”

Creed smiled after so long of worrying for their sibling, now wishing they were going to be safe once the conversation was over.

They talked for who knows how long. About each other, memories from childhood, topics not even themselves thought they’d be able to tell each other…

It all had to come to an end when finally the both of them ran out of things to talk about.

“It was really nice talking to you again Creed… even if it was for the last time….”

“Mhm….. say… the stars are looking nice over here.”

Creed looks out his window from his apartment.

“Have you ever heard anything about Binary Star?”

“What about him?”

“You're still not in the know?”

“Since when have you ever been invested in hero’s Jessie?”

“Been awhile since you called me that, hm… well… remember that one mission that double came back from? The one where his men looked like they were about to turn to dust by one touch?”

“That? You told me double did something insane that mission.”

“Yeah… well… it was actually Binary Star…. The men described it as a blood bath, and that his red eyes were a warning for criminals before they’d be struck down like a kid stomping on small ants…. Double on the other hand, seemed a bit unease with how he did it with such ease, since almost most of the hero's he encountered back then, they’d be more… hesitant before a simple kill…”

“Why are you telling me this now?”

“…I may have witnessed it myself…”

“What?…”

“However it wasn’t while I was against him, more like he was against someone else…. For me…”

“Such as…?”

A faint door is heard behind the call on Mistin’s end.

“Uh, just a protective way…”

“Jessie….. Wait.. does that mean-“

“I have to go… remember… I’ll always love you little brother.”

The phone call ends with a beep. He was left speechless, with the sudden realization upon their words. Binary Star…. Thee Binary Star… Knew Mistin, not only as his hero persona…

But knew him personally.
