Work Text:

The stadium was filled with excitement as fans filled the seats. Their cheers were almost deafening as the announcer introduced the two teams. The Olympic Qualifying matches had drawn in the best Exy teams from around the world, and today, Team U.S.A. was facing off against Team Canada. Kevin, Neil, and Andrew were all lucky enough to have made the team and were ready to show the world the intensity, and unique dynamic they were known for. As the team took their positions on the court Neil adjusted his helmet and looked around.

He could feel the tension on the court and in the stands, but he thrived under pressure it was what made him give it his all. He remembered all the conversations with the team before this discussing strategies and pinpointing weaknesses in the Canadian defense. Andrew would always give him and Kevin his input after the meetings and rely on them to relay it. Speaking of Andrew Neil took a quick second to look at the goal where Andrew was currently leaning against the goalpost, twirling his racquet with his usual nonchalant attitude.

Neil gave Andrew a look that said ‘Focus’ which only earned him an eye roll from the goalkeeper. Andrew sent him a look back that said ‘I am focused.’ His eyes were slightly narrowed which meant Andrew was locked in now. Neil smirked to himself and couldn't wait for the fun to begin. Kevin's last words to him before they went onto the court had been that they needed to keep the pressure on Canada’s defense.

They were strong, but they had gaps. Neil knew his speed was going to be Team U.S.A.’s biggest advantage. Neil had made sure that Andrew knew their strikers were aggressive and would probably try to start fights. Andrew had just given Neil a look that told him he knew this and so Neil hadn't mentioned it since. He just hoped none of them tried to fight Andrewbutnif they did they wouldn't do it again that was for sure.

The game began with a lot of activity as usual. They served the ball and it shot across the court, then all at once players were moving with calculated precision and raw athleticism. Canada was a formidable opponent, but the U.S. team was determined to prove they were better. Kevin was a master of control, directing the ball and his teammates with unparalleled skill. He scored the first goal within minutes. It had been a seamless strike that set the tone for the match. The crowd erupted in cheers, but there was no time for celebration from the team.

Canada retaliated quickly, leveling the score with the same amount of skill as Kevin. As the game went on, it became clear that this was going to be a close match. Both teams fought fiercely, each goal was hard-earned and celebrated with fervor. Neil's speed and agility were crucial, he weaved through the defenders like butter and created most of the scoring opportunities. Andrew's reflexes were sharp, and he was having no trouble blocking shots with a mix of skill and sheer determination.

Midway through the second half, the score was tied. The tension was suffocating, and by now every player on both sides was pushing themselves to the limit. But all hope was not lost because Neil spotted an opening. It would be a very hard move to pull off but he wasn't gonna let the odds stop him. After a whole life of fighting and beating the odds, this would be easy compared to everything else he's been through. So he sprinted forward, dodging the tackles that Canada’s defenseman tried to pull off and heading straight for the goal.

The Canadian goalkeeper looked ready for it but Ne knew he wasn't. Neil's mind raced, as he calculated his options. Then in a moment of sheer audacity, he executed a complex maneuver, flicking the ball with his racquet in a seemingly impossible trajectory. The ball soared through the air, curving past the goalkeeper's outstretched arms and into the net. The final buzzer went off but the crowd was silent for a moment, in disbelief. Then, the cheers finally erupted in a deafening roar. The goal had certainly been nothing short of miraculous. On the sidelines, one of the coaches shook his head in amazement and then he saw the look on the announcer's face.

The Coach turned to a random player who was standing next to him and said "I have never seen an announcer look so close to giving up," he said, watching the commentators struggle to find words for what they had just witnessed.

Kevin grinned, clapping Neil on the back as he returned to their side of the court. "That was insane, Neil. Where did you even come up with that?"

Neil shrugged and gave Kevin a rare smile. "Just felt right in the moment."

Andrew, who was now standing nearby, gave Neil an approving nod. "Nice shot, Junkie."

The U.S. team had now secured their place in the Olympics. As they left the court, exhausted but elated, Neil did something he normally wouldn't and looked back at his teammates. "We did it!" He shouted pumping his fist and racquet in the air

Kevin nodded, his expression one of pride and determination. "This is just the beginning. The real challenge lies ahead."

Ever the realist, Andrew said, "One step at a time." And gave Kevin a sharp slap on the back making him swear.

Together, the three of them walked into the locker room ready to face whatever challenges the Olympics would bring. They truly had forged a bond throughout their countless battles and shared victories, that was stronger than ever. They were more than just teammates they were family. And nothing could stand in their way.
