Work Text:
Wednesday has spent the majority of her holidays thinking about what had happened at Nevermore. Yet, somehow her mind always wandered to the thought of that annoyingly bubbly roommate of hers, with her many colors and torturous music taste. Since she was gifted a phone, Enid would randomly update Wednesday and tell her about her days. Wednesday would rarely reply, yet she would always wait for her daily messages. It was like the highlight of her day, knowing that the person she had connected with wanting to share her personal life details with her.
Of course she could have told Enid to simply write those thoughts and adventures in a personal diary, but she liked getting to see a glimpse of what was going on inside of Enid’s mind.
It was Saturday. Enid had told Wednesday the prior days that she would be going out with some friends in the evening and how excited she was since her mother had finally allowed her to leave the house at night. She was supposed to go out on Friday, so Wednesday expected her update on Saturday.
When the update didn’t come first thing in the morning, Wednesday couldn’t help but worry slightly. However she convinced herself that Enid had most likely just had too much to drink and had a severe hangover. Or that her phone had died and she had forgotten to charge it since, once again, she had too much to drink. Weirdly enough, it was now 11:53pm and there still was no update from Enid. Wednesday couldn’t explain it but she had a bad gut feeling about it. One that she couldn’t enjoy for once.
She walked to her room to not run into her brother’s curious eyes. She locked the door and sat down on her bed, taking her phone out. Wednesday clicked on their chat, verifying if there was in fact no new message. She frowned a little, not sure what to do.
Wednesday:
(Good evening, Enid. Did you forget to message me today?)
She sent the message, regretting it afterwards. She didn’t want Enid to think that she cared about her or worse, worried about her. She raised her eyebrows when she saw bubbles appear on her screen.
Enid:
(Sorry. No update today or the few next days. Take care.)
Wednesday’s concern only increased as she read the message. No exclamations, no emojis, no abbreviations, no GIF. She even used punctuation. That was out of character for Enid. Wednesday knew something was wrong. She tried to reply to Enid but the message was blocked. It wouldn’t send. Enid had probably turned her phone off, which Wednesday confirmed as she had tried call but it wouldn’t go through.
Wednesday got off her bed, walking downstairs. She quickly warned Thing about her absence and walked out the main door. She got in the car, turning the radio off as an unpleasant pop song started playing. She then started the car, driving to a train station in New York. She got on the first train to San Francisco. Yes, it surely was extreme of her to react that way. Maybe Enid simply didn’t want to talk to Wednesday or she was tired of her dry replies or some other logical reason. But Wednesday still needed to know. She had to know why Enid wouldn’t talk to her or even go as far as to block her number.
It took her over 9 hours to get to Enid’s town yet she didn’t care. She would swim to another continent if she had to, just to make sure that the blonde girl was fine. As her taxi cab drove down Enid’s street, she could see a familiar person standing outside in the front yard. Enid’s mother. Wednesday asked the driver to pulled over and got out after paying him.
It was barely 8am, the mother was probably about to leave for work. Wednesday quietly walked up to the house, ignoring the mother who just seemed confused. Instead of knocking or ringing the bell, Wednesday opened the unlocked door and walked inside. She gave no mind to the mother calling after her with a panicked voice. She walked up the stairs, knowing that’s where the bedrooms were due to the countless of selfies Enid had shared with her. Wednesday made her way to a colorful door, reading Enid’s name on it.
There was a moment of hesitation. Wednesday knocked and waited for a moment.
-Go away, mom., said Enid with a pained tone.
To her surprise, Wednesday’s cold heart dropped, so she just opened the door and walked in. She closed and locked the door behind herself quickly as the mother had tried to run after her. Wednesday turned around and observed the room for her second until her eyes eventually settled on Enid’s bed. She was hiding under her blanket. Wednesday watched as the blanket kept rising and sinking with Enid’s every breath. The pale girl walked up to the bed, not sure how to proceed. She ignored her nervousness and poked the blanket.
Enid flinched, wrapping the blanket around herself tightly, still hiding under it.
-Mom! I told you to leave!, yelled Enid, clearly upset.
There was someone banging on the door.
-Enid, open the door! Open the door right this second!, yelled the mother from the hallway.
Wednesday watched as the blanket stopped moving, knowing that Enid had just realized that the person in the room wasn’t her mother. Yet Wednesday couldn’t bring herself to talk. She watched as Enid slowly moved the blanket down to look and see who had entered her room. She froze when her eyes met Wednesday. The pale girl frowned when she noticed Enid’s puffy and red eyes looking back at her. Enid hid herself again.
-Wednesday, what on earth are you doing her?!, yelled Enid as her voice was muffled under the blanket.
-Something is wrong., stated Wednesday simply.
-I don’t update you this one time and you fly from one side of the country to the other to get to me?! Are you insane?!, continued the blonde girl.
-You know that I am insane. And I took the train. Now, stop hiding and tell me what happened., demanded Wednesday as she sat down on her bed.
-Get out! Get out! Leave!, yelled Enid once again.
Wednesday ignored her and reached for the blanket. Two seconds after pulling the blanket up to get a better look at Enid, she found herself being pinned down against the mattress by the blonde girl. Wednesday hadn’t expected such a reaction from Enid, but she didn’t say anything. She could tell that Enid was hurting and trying her hardest not to cry as she glared down at her.
-Give me the name of whoever caused this., said Wednesday seriously.
Enid shook her head, tears now falling down her cheeks, dripping down on Wednesday.
-Why did you have to come here? Why couldn’t you just stay where you were?, cried Enid, not letting go of Wednesday.
-Your message. You didn’t message like you normally do. I couldn’t call you either. You left me no choice., explained Wednesday as she felt bruises forming around her wrists from Enid’s tight grip.
-You shouldn’t have come., whispered Enid, closing her eyes as she tried to stop crying once again.
There was more banging on the door.
-Enid Sinclair, if you do not open this door right this second, I will knock it down!, warned the mother.
-Give me a second!, yelled Enid.
She glared down at Wednesday, then letting her go as she got up and walked to the door. She unlocked it, watching it burst open, her mother stepping inside. She glanced over and saw Wednesday on her bed.
-What is going on here?, asked the mother angrily.
-Nothing. She’s leaving., said Enid, looking at Wednesday in a way she had never experienced before.
Wednesday got up and looked at the two.
-I am not. I will not leave until I know why my friend is in pain., stated Wednesday, fully aware of the fact that she vocally confirmed their friendship for the first time.
-You are to leave. Now. Or I will call the police., warned the mother.
-Do as you please. I am not leaving., argued Wednesday, keeping her posture.
-Mom, let me handle this., tried Enid.
-No. She is not welcome here and needs to leave! Now!, yelled Enid’s mother.
-Please, just let me talk to-, attempted the blonde girl again but her mother showed her claws as warning sign to both girls.
Wednesday watched her, unfazed by the mother’s threat.
-Well, you seem like a great mother., said Wednesday sarcastically.
-Do not test my patience. Leave my house. Or else., threatened the mother.
-Or else what?, asked the pale girl, not caring.
The mother stepped forward, wanting to reach for Wednesday but Enid got in between, glaring at her mother.
-No. You are not laying your hands on her., warned Enid, her claws out as well.
The mother looked at Enid, surprised by her action. She raised an eyebrow and sighed loudly.
-Of course. Of course it’s the goddamn weird goth girl., scoffed the mother.
-What?, frowned Enid.
-She’s the one, isn’t she?, said the mother provokingly.
-The one?, asked Wednesday, not sure what she was talking about.
-Mom, don’t. I will make her leave., pleaded Enid as she took a step back towards Wednesday.
-So she is. Wow. So first you go out and I have Mariam sending me pictures of you making out with a girl. Then you come home and tell me you were simply drunk and were trying to forget about someone else. A crush. You promised me that it was a boy. But it’s not. It’s her. You were drinking your feelings for her away. For this pathetic goth bitch. I have taught you so much better than that., sighed the mother as she showed her disappointment in her daughter’s actions.
-Get out., said Enid with her teeth gritted.
-What is this? Are you really threatening your own mother over her?, scoffed the woman.
-You can talk badly to me all you want, but you leave her out of it. Now get out., repeated Enid.
-Or what? Are you going to attack your mother?, smirked the mother confidently.
-No. But I will tell dad to check your phone because I’ve noticed you have been smiling a lot after receiving messages from ‘a friend’., replied Enid, not looking away from her.
The mother’s face went pale. Almost as pale as Wednesday’s skin. She gulped and shook her head, mumbling some words under her breath before stepping out of the room, slamming the door. Enid’s shoulders dropped, not daring to turn around and look at Wednesday.
-You kissed a girl?, asked Wednesday.
-That’s what you got out of all of that?, scoffed Enid, turning around and glaring at Wednesday.
-No., replied the other girl plainly.
Enid sighed and closed her eyes, trying to calm down.
-You got drunk to forget about me. Why?, asked Wednesday with a light frown, trying to stay emotionless.
-The fuck do you mean, why? I get it, okay? I do. You’re different. You don’t like most things that normal people do. You don’t text like most people do. But you drive me insane. God, Wednesday, I even got with Ajax to forget about you until he found out about my repressed feelings. It’s not the thought of you rejecting me that’s driving me insane, it’s the fact that I am so fucking desperately in love with you but you don’t even have the common decency to text me first or tell me about your day or even just ask to call or hang out! You read my text every morning, you reply exactly 3 hours after reading it and then I don’t hear from you from the rest of the day. Sometimes you don’t even reply! How can I love someone who can’t even send me a fucking text? How can I even imagine being with someone who simply does not give a single fuck about me? So yes, Wednesday. I went out and got drunk. A pretty girl approached me so we made out. My fucking neighbor snitched on me to my mother. All because I wanted to forget about you for a few fucking hours. But you know the worst of it? Even while making out with the girl, all I could think about was your lips on mine. See! See what you’re doing to me? I am going insane, Wednesday. Insane!, yelled Enid as she ramble and ramble and ramble.
Wednesday watched her silently, trying to process everything she was saying. She had never heard Enid cuss before, being surprised by it. She then looked down, breaking eye contact first for once.
-I may not message you or act like most people do. But I don’t know if you noticed, I travelled from New Jersey to here just to make sure that you were ok. I understand why you are upset. I am sorry. But I cannot change who I am overnight. Although, you did get something wrong, Enid. I care about you. I hate that I do but I do. I don’t want to care about you. I don’t want to care about anyone because it always only ever ends up being painful in the end. Not enjoyable pain. You are my first friend. My only friend. I don’t want to lose that. But I also do not wish to inflict any more pain on you., admitted Wednesday, trying to find her words carefully.
-You should have stayed at home., replied Enid coldly.
-I like you., said Wednesday firmly, finally looking up at Enid again.
-No. No, you don’t get to do that. You don’t get to that. You have barely talked to me ever since we left Nevermore and now you think those three words will make up for it? No., scoffed Enid, angry at her friend.
-What…what if you teach me?, asked Wednesday.
-Teach you? Teach you what?, frowned Enid, not understanding.
-How to be a good girlfriend., stated the pale girl, her cheeks blushing slightly.
-You want me to teach you how to be a good girlfriend? You actually would want to be my girlfriend?, questioned Enid, unsure how to feel.
-Yes. To both those questions., nodded Wednesday simply.
-I don’t want you to change for me., argued Enid, shaking her head.
-I want to learn. I want to be someone you can see yourself with. I will learn and be good. I will work on it until I get to the point where I’ll deserve to be with you., said the smaller girl, looking up at her friend.
-That’s not how this works., replied Enid.
-Then how can I convince you to be my girlfriend?, asked Wednesday with a little frown.
-You can’t. I like you. I love you even. But I can’t be with you., sighed the blonde girl.
-Why?, asked Wednesday.
-Have you not been listening?, scoffed Enid, getting annoyed now.
-I…I think I love you., admitted Wednesday.
-You think you love me? Think?, asked Enid with a frown, visibly hurt.
-The only love I’ve ever seen in my life was the one my parents share with one another. Their love is so…demonstrative. Always kissing and dancing and it just seems like a lot. I don’t think I want to be kissing and dancing and whatever all day long. But…But that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to kiss you at all. Or…Or even dance with you under the stars. I…I don’t know how to bring myself to show you that I love you. I don’t know what love feels like but what I do know is that I feel anxious and nauseous around you. Like my heart is trying to get out of my ribcage and jump into your arms whenever I’m around you. I don’t like being touched but when you’re close, I…I find myself wanting to reach out or close the gap. I wake up every morning, extra early so I don’t miss your message. When I receive your message, I can barely read it without feeling anxious. I take that long to reply because I simply don’t know how to reply to you. Only to you. I don’t want to end up saying the wrong thing so I just keep my messages short and dry. When I saw you that night, after you saved me from Tyler, you were…covered in blood. Because of me. That night at Laurel’s house, you almost got hurt because of me. I put you in danger, so I convinced myself that I’m no good to you. But…But I can be good to you. For you. I can. I can, because I love you. If this is what love feels like, then…then I love you, Enid., confessed Wednesday, talking about her feelings openly for once.
-I just…I just need a little attention. And affection. If you can do that, then…then maybe we can try., replied Enid, after wiping a few tears away from her eyes after listening to Wednesday.
-We can?, asked Wednesday surprised, almost cracking a smile.
-We can. I’m sorry I got impatient. You…You weren’t giving me anything and it drove me insane., sighed Enid, looking down.
Wednesday stepped forward and took Enid’s hands in hers.
-I will give everything from now on. You have my word., promised Wednesday truthfully.
-I will trust it when I see it., replied the blonde girl, relaxing a little.
-That’s…fair., nodded Wednesday.
There was a moment of silence.
-So, that girl you made out with? Do you know her name? I’d like to have a word with her., said Wednesday with a serious tone but Enid knew she was joking.
-Wow, we just started and you’re already the jealous type?, chuckled Enid, shaking her head.
-Maybe., shrugged Wednesday, not breaking the eye contact, rubbing her thumb over Enid’s knuckles.
Enid looked down at their hands and smiled softly.
-Your skin is soft., stated Wednesday as she followed her gaze.
-You know what else is soft?, asked Enid with a chuckle.
-What?, frowned Wednesday, confused.
Enid smirked a little before leaning down and pressing her lips against Wednesday’s. She kissed her softly, feeling Wednesday’s usually tense body relax a little. Wednesday kissed back after a few seconds, kissing her more roughly as she gripped onto Enid’s pajamas. Enid giggled and pulled away from her.
-Easy there., chuckled Enid.
Wednesday eyes went wide and she looked down.
-Sorry. I’m sorry. It’s my first time. And- And I’ve been waiting to do that for a while., admitted the pale girl, not sure how to act.
-It’s okay. Just be soft, okay?, smiled the blonde girl, placing her hand under Wednesday’s to make her look up.
-Soft. Yeah., nodded Wednesday, just staring at Enid’s beautiful eyes.
Enid chuckled at how flustered Wednesday seemed, very unusual for the pale girl. She leaned down again, kissing her softly. This time, Wednesday kissed back immediately, listening to what Enid had said. She relaxed into the kiss, enjoying every second of it. And Enid sure was right, her lips were very soft. Enid then pulled away.
-Wait, just to be clear. We’re like official, right? Girlfriends?, asked Enid nervously.
-Yes. We are., nodded Wednesday, smiling lightly.
-Right. Okay. Just making sure., replied Enid, now grinning.
-Enid…can you show me how to send those images you always send? GIFs? I…I don’t know how to., admitted Wednesday, looking down embarrassed.
Enid smiled even brighter, taking Wednesday hand, guiding her to her bed and making her sit down. She then took her phone out and proceeded to explain how to use them and how look for the ones she wants to send. Yet Wednesday couldn’t really focused, mostly just staring at her new girlfriend, admiring her. She always knew but never wanted to admit it. She knew Enid would be the one.
