Chapter Text

Emi bounced her way down the hall to her father’s room. She gently turned the doorknob to his room seeing the sleeping man in bed. She grinned wide as she climbed up onto the bed, jumping up and down. “Papa, papa! School time!” Emi called out, trying to wake him up.

Kenma rolled over groggily in his bed. His eyes slowly opened, glancing upon his baby girl jumping on the bed. “Are you sure, Emi?” He spoke, trying to hide the slight whine in his voice. “What time is it?”

Emi moved to jump on him, landing on his chest with an “oof”. She nuzzled into him, “it’s 7:00! School time! Hungry too!”

Kenma’s eyes shot open. “ Shit..” He muttered under his breath before jolting out of bed with Emi in his arms. “We gotta be there in like 25 minutes. Do you know what you wanna wear today?” He asked her as he basically sprinted into the kitchen, setting her in her chair at the island.

Emi just shrugged as she looked at Kenma, “I dunno but purple!” She grinned wide, kicking her feet. “Cereal!”

Kenma nodded, pouring her a quick bowl of her favorite cereal, sliding it to her across the counter before running into her room. “Don’t fall off the chair!” He called back as he began to grab her a cute purple outfit to wear. He decided on a purple dress and some white leggings underneath.

Emi only hummed as she started to eat, swinging her feet more. When Kenma came back she looked up at him mid bite, setting her spoon back down, she gave a wide grin. “Yay purple!!”

Kenma offered her a wide grin. “Perfect for your first day of second grade!” He exclaimed, helping her get changed and doing her hair as she kept eating. Once she was done, he grabbed her bookbag, slinging it onto her shoulders. “You ready?” He asked cheerfully, hoping it was a yes so they wouldn’t be too late.

“Lunch bag?” Emi looked up at Kenma with a small smile, waiting for him to answer her. She fiddled with her dress.

Kenma smiled before swiftly grabbing the lunchbox out of the fridge. “Got it all packed up and ready to go!” He told her. “Anything else you need before we go? Don’t wanna forget anything important.”

Emi shakes her head no, reaching up to grab Kenma’s hand and smiling wide. “Ready? School time!” She beamed bright, squeezing his hand.

Kenna gave a soft grin back to her. “We gotta make sure not to get too distracted okay? We gotta make it on time because Papa woke up later than expected.”

Emi nodded and gave a thumbs up, “Right!” She grinned, walking out the door with him. She hummed a tune, bouncing as she walked.

Kenma held onto her hand as they walked, trying not to run so he wouldn’t drag his child across the sidewalk. He smiled down at her occasionally, seeing how happy she was.

Emi’s eyes widened when she saw a bunny, tugging on Kenma’s hand. “B-Bunny! Papa look!” She pointed at the bunny, “Can we keep it?!”

Kenma laughed, trying to pull her along. “Maybe if it’s there on the way home honey, but we’re gonna be late!” He explained to her, looking down at his watch. “Plus it probably has a family.”

Emi looked up at him with a smile, “Like us?” She asked softly, following along as they got closer to her school. “Where’s daddy… or mommy …?”

Kenma frowned at her question. “We’ve talked about this baby…” He began softly. “Daddy left before he ever got to meet you…” He tried to hide his hurt from her as they approached the doors to the school.

Emi frowned, “Why? Am I not special?” She asked softly. Her attention caught as other kids were making their way inside. “Ah! Where is my class?”

“You’re very special, dear.” He told her gently. He smiled some as he led her to the front door. “You’re teacher should be here to greet you I think…Kuroo? Is the last name? I’m not sure if it’s Miss or a Mr.”

Emi looked around, trying to see if there was any teachers nearby. She looked up at the taller man that made his way towards them. “Tall-“

“It’s Mr. Kuroo Tetsuro.” Kuroo spoke softly, not wanting to scare either of them, especially with his height. Taking in Kenma’s pajamas and slippers, snickering quietly. “Almost late?” He teased, adjusting his rolled up sleeves.

Kenna looked up at him, mouth dropping slightly. “I- Uh- Um- Yeah it was a rushed morning. That’s my bad. Sorry I promise I usually am more put together than this.” He spoke, obviously embarrassed.

Kuroo waved him off with a smile, “Just teasing no worries.” He looked down at Emi with a gentle smile then crouched down to her height. “What’s your name hun?”

“Emi Kozume!” Emi beamed, smiling bright at Kuroo. She let go of Kenma’s hand to hold onto her dress, “Do you like my dress?!” She grinned when Kuroo nodded.

Kenma smiled down at her. “She wanted to wear her favorite color for the first day.” He told him. “Thank god I knew where it was…”

Kuroo stood up with a soft smile, “Lucky color for the first day!” He paused hearing the first bell. “Looks like you came just in time, are you staying for the meet and greet before class officially starts?”

Emi reached back up to hold Kenma’s hand, looking up at him.

Kenma looked down at his slippers with a sigh. “Yeah I’ll stay.” He smiled down at Emi. “Gotta warn everyone I’m a train wreck ahead of time.” He laughed as he walked with her inside.

Emi squeezed his hand as they walked into the classroom, noticing all the new kids she’d have to meet. She paused at the doorway, looking up at Kenma.

Kuroo gave a soft smile at the two, kneeling down by Emi and gently saying, “I’ve heard good things about each student, they won’t bite I promise.”

Kenma squeezed her hand encouragingly. “I’m sure you’ll make friends so fast baby.” He smiled. “You’re such a natural at talking to people. I’m sure they’ll love to get to know you.”

Emi only nodded as she walked inside the classroom, gently letting go of Kenma’s hand and finding the cubby with her name on it. She set her backpack and lunchbox in it and found her seat, looking back to see Kenma at the back of the classroom.

Kuroo walked in towards the front, heading the second bell and clasping his hands together. “Hello! Thank you all for taking the opportunity to stay for the meet and greet! As you all may already know, my name is Kuroo Tetsuro, Mr. Kuroo or Kuroo is fine with me. There will be a folder that goes home with your children each day that tracks what they’ve learned and how their behavior was, to acknowledge it please sign each time! If you have any questions, my email and number is listed on the folder.”

Kenma nodded slowly as he listened, knowing he was going to have to remind himself to sign the paper every day. He gave Emi a small wave when he noticed her looking back to him. After homeschooling her for her first few years of school, he was about as nervous as she was to be in a real classroom. He was worried he wouldn’t be able to help as much, but knew she needed the interaction with the other kids.

Kuroo soon finished his speech, letting the parents hug and say goodbye to their children before starting with the lesson for the day.
