Work Text:
Lucy was driving through Gulf Breeze, Florida, when someone pulled out in front of her. She slammed on the brakes and nearly missed the truck. “WHERE DID YOU GET FUCKING YOUR LICENSE?”
Lucy was in her blue dress uniform and on the way to one of the military schools nearby to help them. “I need coffee.” She glanced around her area and saw a coffee cup symbol on the door. “Perfect.”
Lucy maneuvered the car into a parking space not far from it and got out. Someone hit their horn as they went by, splashing her. “Great. Just fucking great.” She looked down at her wet uniform. “I’m glad I have my spare uniform in the trunk.”
Lucy started walking towards the coffee shop named Gin’s House of Coffee and Tea. She shook out her arms before stepping into the quaint shop. Lucy looked around the cozy place with bright blues and greens and oak tables and chairs. “Lovely.”
“RONALD BILIUS WEASLEY!” A woman screeched. “Get back here!”
Lucy spun around just in time to dodge a redheaded male storming out of the shop. “Phew. That was close.” She observed the counter and saw that a young, redheaded woman was trying to calm herself down.
“Fucking idiot of a brother!” She grumbled. “It’s my freaking birthday, and he can’t mind the shop for one stinking morning.” The woman’s head popped up, “NO MORE FREE THINGS FOR YOU!”
Lucy felt bad for the woman. “Happy Birthday!”
The woman paused at the greeting. “Thank you?”
“I just happened to overhear you stating the fact that it was your birthday.” Lucy gave her a sardonic grin.
“Do you normally listen in to other people’s conversations?” The woman started to get irate.
“No, and I’m going to assume that you’re Gin.” Lucy walked up to the counter. “I’m Lucy. Lucy Lane. I work for JAG in the Army, so I tend to have good ears.”
“Yes, I am.” Gin smiled at her. “I hope my brother didn’t run into you.”
“No, I was able to sidestep him. Too bad I parked by a large puddle because some idiot just got me wet.”
“I think I see the traces of dark patches. Would you like a cup of tea or coffee?” Gin smiled. “Please call me Ginny.”
“Sure thing, Ginny. Everyone calls me Lucy or Lane.” She shook her head.
Ginny smiled. “Thank you for the birthday wishes. My brother didn’t even do that. So what does the Major Lane want to drink?”
“You know my rank?” Lucy was surprised.
“Well, of course. We aren’t far from all the military places around here, and we serve men and women from time to time.” Ginny answered. “Plus, Charlie, my brother, is in the military.”
“Oh?” Lucy arched her brow, “Which branch?”
“The Air Force. He loves to fly.” Ginny beamed in pride.
“Outstanding,” Lucy replied as she looked over the menu board. “Hm. You know, I think I will indulge and get a white chocolate mocha latte.”
“Excellent choice.” Ginny spun around and got to work on Lucy’s drink. “Are you here long?”
“That’s classified, civilian.” Lucy laughed. “Actually, I don’t know the answer until I get to my destination.”
Ginny snorted as she turned around, placing the lid on the cup. “Well, I hope you enjoy this cup, Major.”
“I am sure that I will.” Lucy took the cup from her and saw the number. “Interested, are we?”
“A bit forward?” Ginny asked.
“No, because I was going to ask you if you wanted dinner tonight unless you’re eating with the family,” Lucy smirked before taking a sip. “Mm. This latte is so fucking good.”
“Thank you. I worked hard to get this place going.” Ginny beamed at her praise.
“You are most welcome.” Lucy glanced at the clock. “Shit, I need to get going.”
“Oh, alright. Call me when you get a free moment to set up our date.” Ginny blushed.
“I will do that when we have lunch because I will insist on eating.” Lucy giggled.
“Brilliant.” Ginny smiled. “Talk to you then, Major Lane.”
“Aye, Aye, Captain Gin.” Lucy winked at her before exiting the café. She got into her car and quickly took her phone out to add Gin’s phone number. Lucy sent a quick text to her saying. ‘Hey, Capt. Happy Birthday!! Major.’
Lucy started her car when she heard a ping. She glanced at her phone and laughed at the response. ‘Thank you, Major. Now get to work. Capt.’
I think I’m going to like this assignment.
