Work Text:
The lair was buzzing with the usual hum of activity. Mikey was busy in the kitchen experimenting with a new pizza recipe, and Raph was working out, grunting with every heavy lift. But in the far corner of the lair, deep within Donnie’s lab, the true chaos was brewing.
“Are you sure about this, Leo?” Donnie asked, a mixture of excitement and apprehension in his voice. He adjusted his goggles, his eyes wide with the thrill of the impending experiment.
Leo grinned, his signature confidence shining through as he twirled one of his katanas. “Absolutely, Dee. What could go wrong?”
Donnie raised an eyebrow, his fingers hovering over the controls of the latest contraption they’d built together—a device designed to amplify Leo’s portal powers. “You seriously want me to answer that?” he replied, glancing at the array of wires and circuits sprawled across the workbench.
Leo waved him off, completely unfazed. “Nah, we’ve got this. Besides, when have things ever gone wrong for us?” He gave Donnie a playful nudge with his elbow.
Donnie rolled his eyes, but a small smirk tugged at his lips. The truth was, he loved these moments. The “Disaster Twins” was a nickname they’d earned through a series of mishaps and near-misses, but to them, it was a badge of honor. They thrived on pushing the limits, even if it sometimes led to, well, explosions.
“Alright, alright,” Donnie relented, tapping a few keys on his laptop to finalize the settings. “Let’s do this. But just remember, if this blows up, I’m not cleaning it up.”
Leo laughed, his excitement contagious. “Deal!”
With everything set, Donnie moved to a safe distance, pulling up a holographic display to monitor the experiment. “Okay, Leo, on my count—three, two, one… go!”
Leo focused, summoning a portal in front of him with a flick of his katana. The portal shimmered with its usual blue energy, but as Donnie activated the device, the portal began to grow, expanding far beyond its normal size. The air crackled with energy, and the lab lights flickered ominously.
“Whoa, that’s… bigger than expected,” Leo said, his voice tinged with awe and just a hint of concern.
“Keep it steady!” Donnie called out, frantically adjusting the controls as he watched the readings spike. “We’re dealing with a lot more energy than anticipated!”
Leo’s grin faltered slightly as the portal started to pulse erratically. “Uh, Donnie? It’s getting a little hard to control…”
Donnie’s fingers flew over the keyboard, his mind racing. “Hang on, I’m trying to stabilize it—”
But before he could finish, the portal suddenly surged, a burst of energy shooting out and hitting the surrounding equipment. Sparks flew, and the whole lab shook as the energy wave overloaded the circuits.
“Duck!” Leo shouted, diving to the floor just as a loud explosion rocked the room. The portal collapsed in on itself with a blinding flash of light, sending a shockwave through the lab.
When the dust finally settled, the once-organized lab was in shambles. Equipment was strewn everywhere, smoke curled from a few singed wires, and the distinct smell of burnt plastic hung in the air.
Donnie slowly lifted his head from behind the overturned workbench he’d taken cover behind, his goggles askew. “Well,” he coughed, waving a hand to clear the smoke, “that didn’t go as planned.”
Leo emerged from his spot behind a toppled shelf, shaking his head and brushing off debris. “You think?” he quipped, though there was more amusement than frustration in his voice. He glanced around at the destruction, a sheepish grin forming on his face. “Okay, maybe I underestimated just how much power we were dealing with.”
Donnie stood up, surveying the damage with a resigned sigh. “We’re definitely cleaning this up before Raph sees it,” he muttered, pushing his goggles up to rest on his forehead.
Leo laughed, the sound echoing through the now-quiet lab. “Hey, on the bright side, we didn’t blow up the entire lair. Just… most of the lab.”
Donnie couldn’t help but chuckle despite the mess. “True. And we did learn something—never amplify portal energy without reinforcing the containment field.”
Leo nodded sagely, though his grin made it clear he was already plotting their next experiment. “And next time, we’ll make it even bigger.”
Donnie shook his head, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Of course we will.”
Leo paused, looking at Donnie with a smirk. “You know, you might actually be rubbing off on me. I’m starting to think explosions are kind of… fun.”
Donnie’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Welcome to the dark side, Nardo.”
Before Leo could respond, the lab door slammed open, and Raph stormed in, his face a mix of concern and anger. “What the shell happened in here?!”
Both Leo and Donnie froze, exchanging a guilty look. “Uh, hey, Raph!” Leo began, trying to sound casual. “We were just… running a little experiment.”
Raph’s eyes narrowed as he took in the destroyed lab. “A ‘little experiment’? Looks like you two blew up half the lab!”
Donnie raised a hand defensively. “Technically, it was more of a controlled detonation.”
Raph crossed his arms, not amused. “You two are gonna clean this up, and then you’re on chore duty for the next week. Got it?”
Leo and Donnie groaned in unison, but they nodded. “Got it,” they mumbled.
As Raph turned to leave, Donnie shot Leo a sideways glance. “Totally worth it,” he whispered.
Leo grinned, nudging Donnie with his elbow. “You know it.”
As they set to work cleaning up the lab, the twins couldn’t help but laugh at the mess they’d created. Sure, they were in trouble—again—but that was just part of being the Disaster Twins. And honestly, they wouldn’t have it any other way.
