The Daughter

Summary:

The sequel to The Princess

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

It was a normal day in Ealdor. Old Man Simmons was pretending he hated everyone in the village and grumbling about the misdemeanours of the younger generation, Will was messing around with his friends Mary and John, Will's mother Enid was checking the grain supplies with Alex and everyone else was going about their daily routine.

It was a normal day in Ealdor - for all but two, that is. The former Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and her lover the Lady Elaera (nicknamed the Seductress of Driftmark by some of her enemies - others simply called her the Temptress - though only her twin had ever dared call her that to her face) were sitting silently across from each other at the table in their house in Ealdor. Now, this in itself was hardly unusual for the two co-conspirators and instigators of war. No, what was unusual was that, for once, the two women that had brought devastation to Westeros were refusing to even look at each other.

They had just had a rather explosive argument on matters pertaining to a letter that had arrived that very morning at their house concerning the former queen's daughter - the only one that Hunith did not hate - Rhaenyra. According to the letter, Rhaenyra would be going to Ealdor in disgrace, having been exiled by the edict of King Aerys. She was not to return to Westeros until either Aerys lifted her exile or her husband Rhaegar succeeded his father to the Iron Throne and welcomed her back. Of course, the letter did not explain why exactly Rhaenyra had been exiled, only that it had something to do with the Lannisters and Rhaenyra's sister.

Lady Elaera had not wanted anything to do with a girl that consorted with her enemies, even if that girl did happen to be her queen's favoured daughter, and had told Hunith this in clear terms. This had severely angered the former queen and they had started screaming at each other in a manner that would shock anyone that had known the two prior to their banishment from the Seven Kingdoms.

Unfortunately for Lady Elaera, this argument would not change the fact that Rhaenyra Targaryen would be coming to stay at Ealdor. Fortunately for Lady Elaera, the journey would take months, seeing as Rhaenyra would not be allowed to see Syrax again until such time as her exile was lifted (or never), so she would have plenty of time to get used to the idea.

Hunith was glad that she would be able to see her daughter again, although concerned at the effect that living with Hunith and Elaera's enemies (and marrying one of them) had surely had on Rhaenyra. She wished that she had been allowed to take her only 'true' daughter with her when she and Elaera had been forced to leave Westeros, but unfortunately she had been forbidden by the newly crowned King Aerys, so had had to leave her behind.
