Work Text:

A Thunderbolt struck the borders of the Apostate’s(1) old territories and the Germanic Kingdoms of the Heretic(2) . On the place where the Thunder had struck stood a strong and bulky man, his beard was bushy and white from age, but he looked like a soldier who had strengthened himself for three thousand years, as if he had fought the lord of the world, he wore no clothes but a greek Toga. In front of him was a bearded old man wearing a hat that looked like that of a wizard, and a spear with Runes on it, one of his eyes was pitch black and almost closed. He too had a long beard as bushy as the other’s(3) , but he was slimmer and in baggier clothes. The people that were traveling had taken shelter from the storms. The people didn’t notice the Two Gods

“Hello there, Gandalf,” The Sky God said calmly. The other God stared at him with his one eye ”That name is not going to come for 1454 years(4) , Jupiter” The Germanic God said, he chuckled and asked Jupiter “Why are you here my good friend?”

Jupiter looked at him glaringly “Why are you at the Border of Rome?”

Odin laughed “I think you know why I am here friend,”

Jupiter looked at him and sighed “Your people too have turned to Christ?”

Odin looked at him “So have yours? Never knew!”

Jupiter sat down and spoke “Now you do,”

Odin looked at him and sat down beside him “You scared that our worship is going to be buried in the sands of time?” Jupiter looked at him, “No

Odin smiled “Why do you say so?”

Jupiter looked at him and raised an eyebrow “Don’t become Arjun(5)

Odin spoke calmly “1473 years more, till they re-remember us again”

Jupiter said nothing

Odin asked, “Why the quiet?”

“I have seen so many empires fall, It honestly doesn’t surprise me that my own Empire has now fallen to be honest.”

“You know, everything changes, I have seen Gods return to their abodes as if to never return, and after a thousand years they come again” Odin looked at Jupiter “We should return to our abodes, then, we will return. After all, it’s someone else’s reign today” Thunder struck Jupiter again and he returned to his home, and Odin walked away.

The storm had cleared and the people went outside of their shelters, crosses around their necks, after all, for the time being, someone else will have to reign,

Notes:

1) Apostate here refers to Julian

2)When Germans converted to Christianity, they didn’t first become Nicene Christians, they first took up the Heresy of Arianism professed by Arius the Heretic

3)This description is based on the depiction of Odin by George Von Rosen

4) This takes place in 500 AD, after Julian the Apostate had died and the Germans became Arian Christian

5)This is based on the ISCKON interpretation of the Gita, from what I remember of reading it, Arjun knows all answers from Lord Krishna, but asks for the well-being for all other creatures
