Chapter Text
Six year old Renét Solaire knew the legends. She knew her father was a hero, and not just any hero that wore a mask and perused around Kalos under a secret identity. Not entirely. No. Her father was special. Most heroes, even those that don't wear capes, didn't have powers of their own, or supernatural abilities in the world of Pokémon. Her father, Heath, was capable of such. He held command over the same fire that many Fire Type pokémon used like second nature. In fact, her family was so dedicated to the Fire that ran through her bloodline that the Solaires built a large mansion ten generations ago, complete with habitats and sanctuaries for Fire Type pokémon.
We begin Renét's story as she was playing with one such Fire Pokémon. A Slugma, to be specific. Most parents would warn their children against so much as approaching a Slugma for fear that they would be burned, but not Renét. As the daughter of the Fire Guardian of the pokémon world, she had a natural affinity and resistance to extreme heat. This resistance acted like the ability Flash Fire, which made a pokémon immune to Fire Type attacks. She was trying to teach Slugma to roll over when her father approached her. Renét noticed his presence and quickly ran to him with open arms. Heath lovingly picked up his daughter and held her in the air, while Renét squealed in delight.
"Daddy! Daddy! I'm teaching a Slugma to roll over!!" Renét said, feeling proud at the nonexistent progress she was making.
"That's amazing, Sweetie!!" Heath cheered in reply. "You've been working so hard that I think you deserve a little break, long enough for me to show you something really cool."
"Something cool?! Show me!" Renét said, quickly forgetting about the Slugma.
Heath let Renét ride on his shoulders as he walked to a portion of the mansion that Renét was not familiar with. Granted, Renét was told by her mother that she wasn't supposed to go to those parts of the mansion until she was older, and that accounted for most of it. Heath opened a door and carefully stepped inside, mindful to crouch so that he didn't hit Renét on the top of the doorframe. It was a spacious room filled with artifacts, most of which belonged to the Solaire family, but the wall opposite the door was littered in shelves of scrolls, each with a different symbol. Renét marveled at the sheer size of the room, and Heath stopped around halfway across the room.
"Renét, this is the room where a new generation of Guardians will make themselves known across the world. Your purpose is to unite as many of them as you can," Heath explained.
"What if I can't find any?" Renét asked.
"Finding them is the easy part," Heath answered. "These scrolls contain a power that will lead you to the Guardians they belong to. Do you remember which ones are in Kalos?"
Renét thought for a moment, then an imaginary lightbulb flashed in her head. "Electric, Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde, and Fire!!" she answered in confidence.
"That's right!" Heath then went closer to the wall. He set her down on her own two feet before climbing the nearby ladder to the very top shelf, where he plucked a scroll from its place. He then lowered back down the ladder and held the scroll in front of her. Renét reached out to touch it, and the scroll flashed a bright fiery orange color, which startled her a little bit. "This scroll contains the secrets of the Fire Element. When you're older, you will be allowed to read it and understand the flame, granting you full access to it along with the ability to harness and use it."
"How old do I have to be?" Renét asked quizzically.
"Old enough." Heath answered as he climbed back up the ladder to place the scroll back to its original place. "Once you understand your power, I will send you into Kalos to find the other Guardians, and invite them here so that they may take on their full duties as Guardians."
"What if they say no?"
"Then no is no. Sometimes Guardians don't manifest, while most do, but don't wish to be part of a larger team. It can, and likely will, happen; and you will learn to be okay with that." Heath picked her back up and let her ride on his shoulders again. "Your mission will be to simply inform them of their potential, and give them the choice to tap into it."
"So like Mr. Frances?" Mr. Frances was the mailman that visited the Mansion every morning. Renét was very fond of him, and would often greet him with an extra cookie that she "stole" from the cookie jar (her parents know about this so they let her think she's being sneaky).
Heath chuckled. "Yes, exactly how Mr. Frances delivers invitations to us. Sometimes we say yes to the invitations, sometimes we say no."
"I hope everybody says yes!" Renét said. "I think having powers is fun. And I could make some friends!"
"Yes. Indeed you could." Heath ducked Renét under the doorframe, then shut the door behind them.
