Safety is subjective

Summary:

The world as we know ended! Don't worry this happened generations ago, now bastions of humanity live in the safety of secluded walls, surrounded by untamable wilderness. Untamable due to the roaming 'things' that prowl. Ranging from simple giant beasts to things that defy reality. It isn't safe for a human to be out in the wilderness, but that's where you are. That's where you work. You were assigned to be a hunter from childhood, which means you go out beyond the walls to brave death's jaws to try gather intel, or for a better paycheck, slay a monster. No one expects you to reach old age, and no one's waiting for you to come home, because the monsters are waiting for you.

Work Text:

Whatever had happened, you had never heard anything like it before, and the smell? Like burnt fur, blood, sulphur, and something… Wrong. When it happened you immediately hid yourself away like a clever hunter for a period that felt far longer than it was. Once silence persisted, you found your resolve, and with a shaking hunting knife in hand, you crept towards this new thing in the forest of death. Your heart was hammering, knowing this could be the last mistake you make. Making it wasn’t unfounded though, this mystery was too close to your nearby town to be left alone. If there was a new development or some kind of new threat, it was your stupid responsibility to report it, or if possible, kill it. Your job was miserable, exhilarating, terrifying, and constantly life threatening. You’d quit in a heartbeat if you were allowed, but no. That’s not how it works at home. You took any precaution you could, but the late evening meant your time was short. You risked a little detour so you could approach from downwind, your eyes constantly scanning the dense undergrowth for any stray twigs or branches, nature’s own alarm system. The closer you got to the source, the more the natural noises of the forest died down, the silence that it brought was unnerving. Once daylight had truly gone, you needed to be elsewhere, preferably inside the walls. With senses on fire, you ever so slowly peaked around a tree into a clearing.

At first, it didn’t make sense. Things unfortunately rarely did in your line of work thanks to physics defying nightmares, but this was still bewildering. Some… Thing you’ve never seen before, lay on its side. An immense body that dwarfed your own, built of muscle and coarse fur. A mouth full of jagged uneven fangs dripped blood, it had three wicked looking horns, and so many eyes that stared at nothing. They were half lidded and glazed over, its throat had been slashed recently enough that gore still slowly trickled out. From all appearances this eldritch nightmare was dead. Its chest didn’t move to show any sign of breathing, but what was moving was even more curious. Two tiny brightly coloured creatures. One bright orange, giving the appearance of a young puppy, but it hinged on uncanny. Like an incredibly well-crafted toy with exaggerated features to give off an even more friendly appearance. It was darting around it’s presumed friend, a purple cat. A similarly uncanny looking creature, that was trapped with a leg and its tail under the dead beast. It also looked like it was sporting a nasty burn along its shoulder and back. That was the only burn visible and that didn’t make any sense either given the intensity of the burnt fur smell that had helped guide you to the clearing. You felt a pang of sympathy for the poor cursed thing, feeling the phantom sensation of your burn mark along your back, a scar left from a hunt years ago. These were tiny young monsters, that barely came up to your shins. The entire situation raised so many questions that unless these two little beasts somehow started talking, you knew you weren’t going to hear any answers. Well wouldn’t be the first time you’d claim another monster’s kill as your own, the pay for the many eyed thing’s trophy would pay enough to keep you inside the safety of the walls for a few weeks, and then you’d need to venture out here again.

First things first, caution and safety. You scanned the clearing. Searching for any sign of what killed the beast, but you found nothing, you even looked up at the tree line, no threats. This, is extremely troubling. Because it didn’t look like the beast had been dragged here, and there was no way in hell that those two little monsters had managed to take down this thing. Sheathing the knife, you stepped cautiously into the clearing. The little one’s ears perked up immediately, the orange one zipping around to face you, front paws spread, and hind quarters raised in a pouncing pose, it growled. Frankly if its tactic was to disarm you by being adorable, it may have worked, had you not seen how dangerous even little monsters could be. Crouching down onto a knee, arms held in front of you like you were ready to receive a pitch, you waited. There the staring contest began, patience was a hunter’s best friend. The first one to act would lose this game. And when the tension came too much, the little furry ‘dog’ pounced straight at your face at a frighteningly fast speed for anyone that wasn’t prepared for it. Catching it behind its front legs you held the wriggling body up as it swiped and bit at your face from a harmless distance, its ‘friendly’ face had lost a lot of its appeal as viciously sharp fangs had become visible while it continued to try in vain to bite and claw. You regarded it’s attempts with a soft smile, sure these things were deceptively strong but it couldn’t reach to bite your hands from this position, all it could do was helplessly wriggle. “What to do…” you asked the still growling puppy, knowing you weren’t going to get an answer. You knew what you SHOULD do, as much as it sickened you. Sure, once these two grew up they wouldn’t hesitate like you were right now, but they were kids. What monster could hurt a kid?... Well, the hungry kind you reasoned as you started walking cautiously over to the large reason you weren’t going to go hungry any time soon. You gave the clearing one more look around but the only ones here were you and the two kits. The pup kept struggling until it managed to tire itself out, which was surprisingly quickly in all honesty, maybe they hadn’t eaten in a while and that’s why they were here? That would make sense, there was no tooth or claw of any parental figure nearby, but you kept alert for anything that might be drawn in by the carcass. The daylight hadn’t faded yet, but once it had, you reminded yourself you needed to be somewhere else.

“Okay you damn bleeding heart, what’s the worst that could happen.” By now you were next to the small purple critter, who looked up at you with a soft mewl and big pleading eyes. The black sclera and white pupils marked them as monsters but these two seemed to be masters of putting on a cute façade that tugged on your heartstrings. “Don’t attack me.” You asked, in a polite tone to something you knew couldn’t understand you, the orange one had resumed wiggling despite it’s out of breath panting the closer you got to its friend. “Hey, stop that, I’m helping” you said like a parent trying to clean an unruly child, holding the pup up high as you pressed a leg against the large creature’s chest. All the running in your life, mostly for your life, had earned you some pretty fit legs, fit enough you reasoned as you grunted under the strain, to push… This… Stupidly… Big beastie… Just enough… For the little one to… Scrambling as it realized your intentions to help, just another inch higher and it finally managed to pull itself free. The feline quickly put distance between itself and you. Immediately releasing your leverage on the beast, it sagged heavily back down with an audible thud, the effort was enough that you had to catch your breath for a second, your legs feeling sore.

You kept your eyes on the ‘cat’ to see if it was about to attack you like the orange ‘dog’ did, but it seemed more concerned with its own previously crushed paw. Tentatively putting it down and testing its weight, but quickly retracting it and keeping it off the ground. Part of you hoped the poor thing wasn’t broken, but it wasn’t your problem. You helped as much as you could have, and definitely more then you should have. The orange dog had stopped aggressively wiggling at you thankfully, and instead was staring down at its friend, making curious little noises. “There see? Will you be good?” You asked gently, its ear flicked before it turned its large eyes at you, and when it nodded your blood ran cold. It nodded. The small but still dangerous monster in your hands that just attempted to eat your face just nodded at your question. And now you two had resumed the staring contest you had entered when you first met… No. No, it didn’t nod at you, it was just looking at you because you made a noise. Were you lying to yourself to protect your fragile mind that these monsters you were paid to kill, and had seen kill and eat other people, were capable of understanding? Maybe. Your own understanding of nature and these monsters could not cope with that possibility. This dog did not nod at you.

Cautiously, you gently lobbed the canine away from you towards its awaiting feline friend who had kept its distance, staring at you both with big eyes. The canine landed a bit clumsily, but once back on its paws, it immediately ran over to check and fuss on its friend like a concerned partner.

Right, time was ticking you reminded yourself, as the sunlight filtering through the trees gradually grew redder, meaning sunset was rapidly approaching. Grab proof of your ‘kill’ and get out. “What even are you.” You mumble to yourself, moving to the other side of the beast so you could keep your eye on the two critters while you worked at hacking off a horn and some fangs, that will be proof enough. Anything bigger and meatier and you’d be lugging around something that would draw hungry monsters straight to you. A death sentence at night. The smell of the gore was acrid as you got to work, but it wasn’t the worse thing you’d harvested. The promise of safety, food and a hot bath was a motivator that could get anyone to do things that they’d never consider themselves capable of. If you were starving and found those two kits alone… Well best not to dwell on depressing possibilities you thought, staying positive about life had gotten you this far. Curiously the two of them had sat down and after making some noises at each other, just… Watched you work, with heads tilted in the same direction. Adorable. You frowned at them in confusion but as long as they kept their distance, you were okay. You felt confident enough to catch one if they leapt at you again, but if they both chose to press the attack, your defences would have to be more… Lethal. What started catching your attention was a new smell that undercut through the gore. It took your mind a bit to process it, but it was definitely the smell of lavender. One of your neighbor’s grew it on her balcony, she’d always loved the smell, and it helped keep the bugs away. ‘More mysteries! How truly excellent’ you thought in an absurdly sarcastic voice in your head.

It was difficult, and took longer than you hoped, but you finally managed to pry your proof free. Wrapping the large severed horn and a couple of fangs in cloth and slipping it in your backpack. Satisfied, you got up to leave in the direction of your home without a moment to lose… The critters got up too. Their eyes followed you as you walked out away from the clearing, purposefully away from them, and looking back your skin crawled as you saw that they were following you. It wasn’t surprising that they weren’t strangers to navigating the underbrush, they didn’t make a single noise, stalking around bushes and twigs, even as the ‘cat’ tried to keep their injured paw off the ground as much as possible. Funny how something loses all ‘cuteness’ when it’s stalking you. You quickened your pace, something was… Wrong, and that smell of lavender persisted when you left the clearing, even stronger now. Something in your dulled senses screamed danger. Get. Home. Your instincts have kept you alive so far, so it’s time to start sprinting. As hard, and as fast as you can. It was stupid to run this fast as the last of the sunlight slipped out of sight, the risk of tripping and breaking something was getting exponentially higher, and then you truly were as good as dead. But something was horribly wrong, and as you stopped dead in your tracks, desperately trying to catch your breath your thoughts screamed in panic. You were fitter than this surely?! Your adrenaline was pumping, and you had run for far longer in your life without feeling ready to drop to your knees so quickly. You rested a hand on a tree, sucking air in huge gasps as felt your limbs grew heavy. Your eyelids grew heavy. No no no no no no no no no no, what is happening!? You wanted to keep running, but body was demanding sleep. Don’t fall asleep. You want to see the sun rise. You want to live. Dammit you want to live…

You fell to your knees, panting as the choking smell of lavender engulfed your senses, it made the air feel thick enough to chew. Terrified, you looked back to where you had just run from, and there they were. An orange dog with fluffy floppy ears, and a purple cat with an absurdly long tail and a paw off the ground. In the last slivers of sunlight, it looked like they were smiling. All the effort you could muster fell short, and you lost consciousness.

Cold. It was so cold. It felt like your thoughts were submerged in honey as you struggled to come to. What little your dulled senses could tell you was that you were swaying back and forth, your eyes could see trees slowly pass by. The cold night air bit at you, and voices you’ve never heard before talked in hushed tones. Then you fell back into a dreamless sleep.

Warmth. Delicious soft warmth, and a gentle rumble pressed behind you. This time your senses were gracious enough to start waking up with you. You could hear two voices discussing something quietly. They sounded male, deep, and… Lovely, but they sounded distant and unclear, like you were hearing them from a few rooms away. You tried to look around, but it was so dark that you could barely make out the silhouettes of the trees around you. You were in a seated position, resting against something large and rumbling. You tried to rub the sleepiness from your eyes but couldn’t for some reason. Only when you tried again did you realise you couldn’t move your arms, or legs. Panicked adrenaline got your blood pumping enough for you to spring alive, immediately forgetting the basic rules of being in the forest at night by yelling, trying to get free from whatever was binding you.

“Shhhshhshhh” one of the voices chided gently as a large paw covered your mouth to silence your panic. While the soft fur paw pads suffocated the sound, what truly got your attention and obedience was feeling a wicked claw against your cheek. You meekly obeyed, eyes wide and heart pounding. Not making a peep as something much larger than you purred right next to your ear. “Don’t want to draw unwanted attention, do we? You should know better.” Now you could understand that deep voice clearly, spoken so close, it caused you to shudder softly. Something deep inside you was loving every second of this, every other reasonable part of you was screaming about how you were going to die. You couldn’t see your assailant, but he had you at his absolute mercy. Any wrong move now and no more you.

Once the message had been received clearly, the paw covering your mouth moved away. When you didn’t utter a peep, the deep voice continued. “Good, Little Star.”

“Are you… Sure about this?” The second voice piped up, your eyes strained, trying to make out the source of the voice from the darkness. As your eyes adjusted to the meagre light the moon and stars streamed through the leaves, you could start roughly making out the monster’s form. It stood bipedal, fluffy, and roughly ten-feet tall.

“What’s the worst that could happen?” Your captor replied, in a tone your panicked brain realized was mockingly similar to the one you had talked to the little critters before. How could this massive one have heard that? The gears were turning in your head, your brain giving you an answer that you didn’t want to believe could be true. You cautiously tested your bonds again, it felt like a thick rope or snake was wrapped around you. When you tried to reach for the knife at your hip, you found nothing.

The other one scoffed, putting his… Paw? On his hip in a stand-offish stance. “Aside from waiting till our guards are down and trying to kill us?” he asked.

In response, you were lifted off the warm body you were sitting on, whatever rope was binding you was apparently alive and strong enough to physically hold you off the ground. “My Sunshine, are you truly afraid of this one?” whoever this ‘Sunshine’ was sighed and walked up to you. Now close enough you could see his floppy ears, big black eyes with white pupils, and orange fur. The irony of being the one held up with no way of fighting back was not lost on you as you were assessed. The canine monster squinted, before shrugging.

“He’s a hunter for one, remember that this is exactly how Bobs lost an ear? She thought she could trust’em.” The canine replied, his eyes moving from you to the creature behind you. You heard it stand up behind you, and the rope turned you to face him. Sinking suspicions were confirmed when you came face to face with a large purple feline monster. He was a bit taller, but lither than the canine, the purple fur blended deceptively well into the darkness, a monster like this was a death sentence at night. He lifted your chin up with one paw pad.

“You’ll be good, won’t you? We’ll take good care of you.” He asked you with a small smile, as if the giant monster was now trying to look as gentle as possible. The deep purring voice would be disarming if the words weren’t so alarming. You could smell familiar lavender on his breath. His head tilted to the side as an ear flicked, and the silence lingered on until it became clear he was waiting on some answer. Agreeing was out of the question, but disagreeing may be an immediate death sentence. Maybe the play here was to kill them with kindness?

“H... How’s… Your… Paw?” As much as you tried to hide it, it was evident from your stutter that you were terrified.

The feline’s smile fell for a second in apparent confusion of the question, before breaking into a cheshire grin of terrifyingly sharp teeth that stretched his face unnaturally wide. You were moved closer to him as his soft paw cupped your face, he breathed out a single “Mine.” Before his breathe took on a visible red haze, the overpowering scent of lavender choked you, and your world was engulfed again in darkness.

When you awoke to thunder, you awoke with enough adrenaline that your arms were legs flailing and kicking and fighting against anything unfortunate enough to be within your furious reach before your eyes had even opened. Right up until you managed to fall straight out of… a bed? You looked around in confusion at your surroundings. You were in a room? “What the fuck…” You said as you found yourself in some kind of messy… Bedroom? With a thick smell of lavender and something else, it wasn’t as dark as the forest, so you could see miscellaneous items and what looked like toys strewn about the floor. The bed you were asleep on moments ago sat in the corner of the room, while a much larger bed was tucked away on the other side, with opaque drapes obscuring whatever might be currently occupying it. Hoping you were alone as you cautiously started looking for an exit. There was a large, closed door and two windows. As your eyes adjusted to the low light, you noticed the architecture was unfamiliar, none of the houses in your town were built like this, where are you?

While both of the windows had their curtains drawn, you could hear rain against glass, but one of them must have been open a crack to let in fresh air, as occasionally a gust of wind shifted the curtain around. That was your exit you thought as you started to untangle yourself from the quilt you were still wrapped in. Pausing when you looked down to your bare chest. Your surprise and confusion at finding you had been stripped down to your britches and your heartbeat had to take a pause when you heard a confused ‘prrrbrbrt?’ from the other side of the room, from whatever was beneath the drapes of the other bed. Your heart sank as a now familiar purple feline’s head poked sleepily out from the drapes, ears low and half lidded eyes scanning the bedroom before the white dots homed in on you.

“So quick to wake up… Thought we’d have till night...” That deep voice murmured more to himself than you. Why did that voice have to be so nice to listen to? The feline climbed out of bed and sleepily stretched with a soft mrowl, the size of him reminding you that you’re but a tiny human, in a room with a large and dangerous predator. Now not in the forest, you could see his large body in better detail, he had the same fur patterns as the small purple kit you freed, but his long body also now held an assortment of scars. You had a sinking feeling that your window of escape had just snapped shut. You backed yourself against the bed frame, clutching the quilt you were just trying to untangle yourself from protectively against you as the purple feline started stalking towards you, eyes not leaving you for a second.

“W-where am I?” You tentatively ask, the fear in your voice evident, which only made the feline smile.

“You’re home, Little Star.” He replied as he sat on his haunches in front of you, at this distance you couldn’t reach out and touch him, but you were well within his reach should he want to.

“I… Have a home…” you say softly, your eyes peeling from the feline to look at the window the breeze was coming through earlier. An unrealistic pipe dream you realise now, you had no idea where you had been taken, and even if you made it outside, if you couldn’t recognize any landmarks, making it to town was… Improbable.

“I’ve heard about your… ‘Home’” The feline started, your eyes snapping back to him. He was resting his head on his paws like an adoring pet owner seeing their treasure asleep in a cute position. “Are you truly happy there, Little Star? Sent into death’s jaws to scrape for the privilege of food?” At first you were in shock, his words cut deeply, and how could this monster possibly know your situation? Could he peer into your head while you slept? That possibility wasn’t completely off the table. Anger followed suit soon enough, it was your life! Sure, the metaphor sounded apt, but it was what you knew, and someone needed to do it, that’s why people were assigned to be hunters.

“It… It was enough!” You protested, clutching the quilt tighter. The cat’s smile fell. He reached out slowly, tentatively, like any sudden movements might frighten you to flee, or attack him. And wiped away a tear from your cheek you didn’t even know you had shed until his paw-pad smeared the moisture away.

“Want to know what that thing was, where you found us?” The feline continued before you had a chance to answer. “A real nasty piece of work, it’s… ‘Gift’ can regress any living thing to a child-like state, for a time... Then snap! You revert back. Only usually by then you’re already inside its stomach.” Your skin crawled, and you shuddered, promising yourself that if you ever heard or smelled anything like you had that day, you were turning in the opposite direction and booking it like a bomb was about to go off. “There are more of them, and they’re not the worst things you can run into out there, Little Star.” If this feline’s goal was to scare you, it… Might be working. You’ve trapped and fought frightening things that haunted your nightmares, but any boasts you humbly attempted to make back at town was always met with ‘that’s nothing, I’ve seen bigger.’ ‘My buddy saw something that shot lightning.’ Or ‘oh Creator that sounds horrible, please don’t talk about the outside.’ The thought reminded you the number of neighbours and acquaintances you had, you could count on both hands, and the number of friends waiting for you to come home… “Stay…” The feline asked in a surprisingly tender tone, the paw that wiped away your tear cupped your cheek, and without intending to, you found yourself leaning into it. Physical contact had been… Extremely lacking of late, the paw felt so soft and warm.

“I… I can’t…” You said quietly. Your eyes looking up to the monster’s white eyes in a gentle plea.

“Why.” A lot more venom slipped out in that single word than the feline probably intended, he wasn’t smiling gently at you anymore, and his large paw left your face. You tensed up, he had done a fantastic job of disarming you up with his honeyed voice until this point, but that slip up was a wake-up reminder that he was still extremely dangerous, and if negotiations turned sour… The sound of rain filled the tense silence between you two.

“I… I just… I don’t even know why you want me to stay? I can’t just leave all my friends and family!” You pleaded, even if the last part was somewhat of a lie. ‘Friends’ who put up with you while you were around, and a family that loved you more out of obligation than anything real. The feline stood up and started pacing the room, his incredibly long tail thrashing around him while his eyes narrowed at you in annoyance, clearly displeased the conversation wasn’t going how he wanted.

“Are they really waiting for you? Would anyone from that little town even be surprised if you didn’t come home?” Deep inside, you knew they wouldn’t be. That verbal jab hit an old wound in your heart that ached and bled. It’s not that anyone thought you incapable. It’s just the nature of outside the walls. Death was always just a mistake away, and an assigned hunter growing old was as rare as a monster being a herbivore. So why would anyone get attached to you. He paused his pacing in front of you. “Stay.” The feline said again, it sounded a lot less like a question this time. “You’ll be safe, and we won’t ask for much, help around the house, maybe help us cook if you know how, outside of that you’ll be able pursue whatever you want, I promise.” He paused, before gesturing to the window, to the unknowns that lie in wait. “Isn’t that better than being forced somewhere you’ll die alone?”

If you swallowed your pride, quitting the hunter’s life and being a stay-at-home maid sure did sound better. But your pride stuck in your throat from notion of being reduced to a pet for this big purple cat, and whoever ‘we’ and ‘us’ entailed. Now no longer backed up against the bed, you were able to stand up, electing to sit on the bed instead. You shifted uncomfortably under his scrutiny. He clearly wasn’t a fan of things not going his way, but… Maybe… Maybe playing along might not be a bad idea for now. It would end this incredibly uncomfortable conversation about your home life, and if you kept with the kill them with kindness plan, you could plan an escape down the line. The patient hunter comes home was a phrase you were taught young for a good reason.

“Will I be able to leave the house?” You ask tentatively, causing the feline to perk right up, his ears raising and his smile returning.

“Yes” he purred, his voice losing that venomous edge. “You’ll have to stay within the village boundaries, for your safety, Little Star, and no one will harm you.” Village? Could there be other people? Or just more monsters like him and the absent canine? If you weren’t confined to this building like a housecat, an entire village would open up a lot of possibilities. Okay. You could work with this, and as long as the promise of safety was true, you could plan an escape you tell yourself. One final pry for more information couldn’t hurt.

“And… Will that be all I need to do? And… Why me?” That last question nagged at you, were you just in the wrong place at the wrong time, or did helping free this cat have consequences you couldn’t have seen? The feline pursed his lips in a tight smile that made his fangs peak out against his bottom lip as he looked away from you, his tail started to swish about excitedly and his entire body gave off a mischievous energy, like a friend being overly coy about a secret.

“Oh- there’s just one tiny itty bitty little detail.” He said with abundant joy. Sauntering over to a nearby box next to the large bed he emerged from earlier. You didn’t see what he pulled out as he hid it immediately behind his back, the ten-foot feline making his way towards you purposefully slowly. His smile was tugging at his face, like it was taking considerable effort not to let it spill into that terrifying Cheshire grin you saw in the forest. To now call yourself nervous was the understatement of the season. His eyes looked like they were about to start sparkling.

“Don’t look so worried Little Star! Just a little something to let everyone know you belong here! And… To me, and my Sunshine.” His words carried so much pride. He got close enough that you leaned back out of instinct, before he got down on his knees in front of you, only now were you two looking at each other eye to eye.

“Like… Some kind of… Badge?” You hazarded a cautious guess, part of you wanted to leap out of bed to make a blind dash to get away from whatever this ploy was.

“Not exactly, Little Star.” He chuckled, honestly if you knew a human with a voice this velvety that called you nicknames, they’d probably be able to have you at their… Your gay thoughts were cut off and replaced with deafening white noise as the purple feline finally revealed what he was hiding behind him, laying it flat on your lap. A simple collar. With a latch on the back that could be adjusted for size, and a pendant hanging off a chain at the front. He never said you’d be a pet out loud, but this was the undeniable proof.

In the back of your head you could tell he was saying something, but your brain wasn’t processing all of the words, only a few of them legible. “…Won’t you? We’ll make you happy…” You cautiously picked up the collar in your hands. It was made of leather and had clearly been cared for. Kneading it a bit to test the give, the leather was soft and comfortable against your fingers. If you had found equipment made like this at home you would have bought it in a heartbeat. “…You did save us, and even when I first saw you…” You turned it over and looked at the pendant, it was a bright yellow sun with orange rays dancing around it, but part of the sun was obscured behind a blue crescent moon. The pendant looked polished to an almost mirror shine... Can you swallow your pride? Will you swallow your pride?

As you fought a battle in your mind, you started to pay more attention to the feline’s deep voice “…And he sleeps through anything, so you wouldn’t need to worry about that…” Oh good, he’s telling you about more responsibilities, completely unaware of the significance of you putting on this… Accessory… Or maybe he was aware and was trying to distract you. Until you this fateful day, all you knew about monsters were their horror. but their hides paid for your life. You knew that horror was going to kill you. One day, probably before you had grown a single grey hair. You were going to leave town, and never come back. You knew that. Everyone knew that. No one was waiting for you to come home. You unclipped the latch. Caution to the wind, hunter. Maybe this next period of your life won’t have so many life-threatening surprises?

When you looked up, the purple feline wasn’t even looking at you, he was resting his chin on his paw as he talked about names you’d never heard before with narrowed eyes. You gave a soft sigh before slipping the collar around your neck, with a little difficulty you managed to feed the strap through the latch, once the leather pressed around your neck, tight enough that it didn’t move, but loose enough to not restrict your breathing, you clipped it closed.

“Hey, I’m going to say now that I’m not going to call you ‘master’ or anything like that.” You cut off your new… Owner? God that didn’t sound right in your head, distracting him from whatever he was monologuing about.

“Aw No? I mean that’s fine, but if you…” Disappointment was evident in his voice, but as soon as he turned to see you, his eyes focused down to pinpricks straight on your neck, his words dying on his tongue. His mouth still hung open mid word while his gaze became intense, a paw you hadn’t noticed beside you was gripping the quilt so hard you thought it was going to start tearing. You couldn’t read his expression at all, surely you hadn’t done anything wrong? That’s why he gave you the collar, right?

“Hey?” You asked in a soft voice, and then those large white pupils dilated. Without a word he closed the distance between you and him, his eyes moving to lock on to yours. The closer he got the louder you could hear an almost thunderous purring, reverberating deep from his large chest. You didn’t move an inch as he pressed his soft furry cheek against your own, slowly grinding his face against yours… Like a cat… Marking their territory with their scent. It wasn’t surprising that it too smelled of lavender.

“Mine” was all he said, close enough that the fur on his muzzle tickled your earlobe. You shuddered as fantasies you didn’t even know you had started being fulfilled. His large paw came up to play with the pendant resting on your bare chest, before it forcefully shoved you down on the bed. You looked meekly up at your captor. If you were ever in this position with any of the monsters you’d met previously in your life, you would have been eaten, probably while you still breathed. This feline seemed to have similar plans. First he gently bit your ear, hard enough to sting but not enough to draw blood, and then he started moving downwards. A long rough tongue slid against your sensitive neck, the sensation was electric. Forcing another shudder to ripple through you as he started to explore you through smell and taste.

“What the fuck is happening?” you breathed as the large feline started leaving a trail of lavender smelling saliva down your chest in a journey that didn’t look like it was going to stop at your navel. Each lick caused you to shiver, and you almost clamped your own mouth shut when he managed to draw a moan out of you. Your face bright red in embarrassment as the prowling feline found sensitive areas never touched by another.

The sensations were becoming too much and before he got too low you whined out a “Wait!” And to your surprise, he does. His eyes looked to yours hungrily, still occasionally glancing down at the collar wrapped around your neck, but he didn’t say a word. The immense monster was paused right above the lip of your underwear, waiting for you. Once you managed to calm down and catch your breath you continued. “I… I didn’t think you’d actually stop… J.. Just please be gentle, okay?” In response the feline smiled up at you with a surprising amount of affection in his expression, you could see his long tail flick playfully behind him, ‘good’ you thought, even with this collar on you had some control if he was willing to listen to you. This thought immediately died when sharp teeth clamped onto fabric and tore your underwear off in a terrifying display. ‘Control? You. Are. Mine.’ He replied without saying a single word. Much to your shock and his delight, you were hard.

Your head fell back against the bed as his broad tongue slid along the underside of your cock, from base to tip ever so slowly. Leaving it coated in wet saliva. You swore loudly, before covering your mouth with a hand to try stop any more embarrassing noises being milked out of you. It had been some time since you touched yourself, you were sensitive, and the feline could tell from that reaction. He gently kissed your tip with those purple lips, “Make you… Happy…” His voice was a throaty growl, or maybe that was just his purring, right now you couldn’t tell. When he opened his mouth and closed his lips right around the base of your shaft, you could barely think. His mouth felt so hot… You clung to the sheets for any sort of leverage, while that thick tongue lapped gently along your shaft. His tongue was rough, but there was enough warm saliva that when it grinded against you, the pleasure made your hips buck. At first, he just kept his lips pressed against your crotch, rhythmically suckling along your flesh, his hot mouth felt so deliciously tight. only after a more powerful suckle that made your toes curl did he start bobbing his head up and down. You were still confused on what brought this on but you weren’t in any rush to complain as he worked you with practiced skill. The number of teeth you’d seen in his mouth should have made you more nervous, but here, under the monster’s paw that kept you pinned to the bed, you found bliss.

To the feline’s clear delight, you couldn’t help but moan even while you tried to stop yourself, the corners of his lips curving in a smile. He was paying close attention to you, whether you liked him to move slower, or faster. You weren’t in any position to activate his gag reflex if he had any, so he was free to pleasure every inch of you. The feeling was driving you crazy, making you want to encourage him, say his name, something you knew everyone liked hearing in bed, but embarrassingly you realized you didn’t even know it, so you asked. “What do I call you? What’s your name?”

His smile grew, his movements stopping as he let your dick slip free from his mouth. The air felt so cold against the sensitive wet flesh that you couldn’t help but shiver. “Master.” He said, his smile growing wide, fangs visible. You were caught in the headlights of his eyes, and he looked drunk on power. “Say it, Little Star.” His ears were pricked towards you, and his deep voice made you want to… Your need for more attention made you want to. You leapt at the first excuse your pleasure addled brain came up with because, it… It didn’t have to mean anything after tonight, did it? Your… ‘Master’ rubbed his soft furred cheek slowly up and down your saliva coated cock, smearing it along his fur, tempting you with promises of more. Pride be damned.

“Master…” You began earnestly, that huge furry body shuddered above you as soon as you said it. “Please… Don’t stop now.” You gently pleaded, and he gave you exactly what you wanted. Taking you back into his mouth again, he started bobbing up and down more fervently, letting his wet lips reach the head of your shaft, before he slid all the way down to kiss the base. All your previous experiences could not have prepared you for anything like this. The hot pleasure coursed through you and it didn’t take long before that warm familiar feeling was pooling in your lower stomach, the promise of release was close. Reaching forward gripping the fur on the feline’s head, urging him to go a little faster, he obliged, but once he realized you were close, his eyes locked back onto yours, giving you the same look before, it was an unspoken demand to say it again. And at this point, you were happy to oblige.

It didn’t take much longer for him to bring you crashing over the edge, the rocketing pleasure made you see stars, your hand gripped his fur tightly, and your head rocked back as you loudly moaned for your Master, Your body tensed and bucked as you unloaded your hot seed right into his waiting mouth, coating his tongue. He kept sucking along your shaft, swallowing each new rope, either to drain you of every last drop, or to reward you for saying the right thing, you didn’t know or care. When your climax finally died down, and you were left panting and sweating on the bed, did he stop. He looked like the living avatar of the sin of pride, his eyes hungrily looking at you from the top to the bottom. He bit his lower lip as he started to stand, and with his size, you probably shouldn’t have been surprised that his erect shaft was larger than your forearm. You hadn’t ever been intimidated like this before as he rested his knee on the bed, delighting in how your eyes locked on his member while he let it hang above you. He looked like he was about to start climbing over you to the let two get more intimate before two orange arms locked around him, a familiar but tired looking canine had come up behind your master and was now holding him in place, resting his chin on the feline’s shoulder like an affectionate lover.

“Having fun, you two?” The canine asked, his eyes looking between you and the feline. When his eyes saw your collar they widened, you could see his arms tighten around the purple feline. “Moonlight… He consented, right?” The feline hadn’t said a word yet, his arms moving to the side in what looked like a shrug.

“He put on the collar…” His words sounded guilty, and the orange canine narrowed his eyes.

“We talked about this.” His tone carried disappointment, you could see his orange arms tighten along the cat’s long torso.

The feline that had you moaning on your back moments ago couldn’t look more guilty, his ears pinned backwards as he looked away from his partner. His eyes darted to you, in a silent plea for help. A complete 180 from the position of power before.

You had a choice here, but you had to act quickly to capitalize on it. “No, no it’s okay, I could have stopped him if he crossed a line.” You spoke. Reasoning that if you kept in both of their good graces, it would probably provide more opportunities than immediately instigating friction. That and… The feline was really good. If ‘that’ opportunity arose again later…

“See Sunshine? Nothing to wor-” The Purple feline stopped mid-sentence in apparent confusion when the orange canine sniffed at his face, without saying anything the canine pressed in and kissed the feline deeply, who after a split second looked more than eager to reciprocate. You watched beneath them as you realised that it’s your seed that they're sharing amongst their saliva. That's… That's hot. Oh fuck.

Once the canine had his share, you could see his tail swishing behind him slowly when he pulled away. “Sorry, go on?” He asked the cat.

The feline looked comically frazzled with a broad smile on his face, even with his dark purple fur and the low light you swear you could see him blushing. Apparently, this was a weakness of his because he couldn't find the words, and the canine looked genuinely proud of leaving him speechless.

“Well, while he collects himself, want to help me with this?” The orange canine asked, his eyes looking to you while his arms loosened their grip on the feline, paws traveling down his partner’s lithe body. You were questioning the nature of their relationship, and how you were going to fit into it as you watched orange paws grip around the feline’s still waiting shaft.

“Mnnfgh, Fuck Sunshine…” The feline moaned out as he leaned against the canine in bliss, his eyes closing and smile broadening as one of his paws gripped the base of the feline’s cock, the other slowly stroking along it. The canine’s paw rhythmically slide up and down most of the shaft, but he was giving you free reign over the tip. Well… You weren’t against the idea, ‘kill’em with kindness’ you lied to yourself as you indulged in these new lewd fantasies. Sitting up on your knees to give you better access, you wrap two hands around the feline’s pink tip, it was… Different to a human’s ‘equipment’ but seemed sensitive in the same way. It was also incredibly warm to the touch. When you lifted yourself closer to give it an experimental lick, the big cat shuddered, his eyes watching you half lidded while he pressed affectionately against the canine.

“Oh, good boy.” The canine commented proudly, his eyes trained on you as well. “Keep it up, he likes the attention.” You obediently kept going, your hands starting to stroke along the hot flesh while you paid special attention to the tip with your tongue. On an inspired whim you tried to fit in as much of it as you could into your mouth, the size of it meant you couldn’t fit it very far or breath well. The deep groan of pleasure it caused, along with a chuckle from the canine was music to your ears. You couldn’t keep it in very long, you weren’t that experienced, as you let it slip free with some soft gasps for breath, resuming focusing on your hand movements as you looked up to the two monsters.

This kept on to the sound of rain and moans, the orange canine’s eyes moved between watching you and his feline, his chin still resting on the purple cat’s shoulder while the big cat whined and moaned against him. The feline looked like he wanted to move while he was being pleasured, but the canine kept him locked against his body. You could watch the reactions you caused on the feline as you licked or suckled, watch him arch his back against the dog, or moan louder. It brought a profound sense of pride that you were having this much of an affect this huge master of yours that you were getting hard again.

Something shifted in the canine’s demeanour, a grin spreading across his face as his paw started stroking the feline faster, watching his partner’s expressions while the feline’s movements started getting more sporadic. The canine was whispering something that you couldn’t hear against the feline’s ear, and the cat was eating it up. He must be getting close you realise, and that sparked an idea in your head to make this… Special. Given it’s affect on the feline when you first said it, surely this would be enough to…

“Won’t you cum for me… Master?” The effect was immediate as soon as you said the M word, the great purple body shuddered almost violently as his climax hit, if you and the canine weren’t holding on to the shaft tight enough it would have flung out of you grip, but the orange canine kept it dutifully pointed right at you. Panicking as you didn’t think this far ahead after the first couple gooey ropes hit your face, you closed your lips around the tip and tried to swallow as much as you could. It didn’t take long for the powerful shots to soon get too much, and you had to breathe, swallowing what was in your mouth as you let the last emissions flow onto your neck and chest. When you peeked up towards the two monsters with one eye, the other now kept closed from a coating of seed. You found the orange canine looking down at you in clear surprise with wide eyes, while the feline looked on the verge of passing out right there, with a wide smile and almost closed eyes.

“Catnap?” The canine asked, but what kind of question is Catnap?

“Yyyess?” The feline answered in a slurred love drunk way, clearly still revelling in the afterglow. His eyes sleepily looked to the canine with clear affection.

“You didn’t tell him our names did you.” The canine said in a mock accusatory tone, the smile on his face showing that he wasn’t actually mad.

“Whooooops.” Came the slow reply, still spoken out of a proud smile as he nuzzled against the dog’s orange cheek.

“Whoops.” Said the canine back, before letting go of the feline, who clearly wasn’t expecting this given he immediately slid and fell down onto to the floor with a ‘Wah!’ and a thud. You could hear the feline softly groaning and laughing on the floor while the canine’s full attention turned to you. He examined you in all your messy glory and smiled. “His name is Catnap, mine is Dogday, please don’t call either of us ‘master’ outside of this house.” He pleaded with a soft smile, kneeling next to the bed in front of you.

“Ah… Thank you, I’m still wondering what…” you gestured to the collar, now sporting a coating of the feline’s spunk. “This all… Means.” The canine chuckled, biting his lower lip as his eyes trailed down towards your collar.

“We’re still figuring it out too… But don’t worry about that, let’s get you cleaned up.” He murmured, moving closer to you.

“Oh is there a bath ooorrr-” Your words cut off as you realise he wasn’t eyeing the collar as he came closer and start licking up his partner’s mess along your chest. Oh, this is happening now. His tongue couldn’t be more different to Catnap’s, broader, and was so soft that it sent shivers through you as the big monster started lapping up the feline’s seed. The lavender smell was now getting replaced with… What is that… It was used in recipes at your town on only special occasions for sweet tasting things, including some of your favourite sweets, like cakes. You felt bolder, by now it was pretty clear you weren’t in any danger, at least from these two, so you brought your hands up to start petting through Dogday’s soft fur. He chuckled in amusement while you kept thinking about what his smell was… It felt like it was at the tip of your tongue, before the canine interrupted your thoughts when he licked up your cheek and eyelid, finally allowing you to open both of your eyes, you found his eyes looking into yours hungrily.

“Can I?” He asked in his deep voice, not as deep as Catnaps, but it could still make you shudder softly. You didn’t even know what you were agreeing to before saying yes. That’s when he kissed you. At first gently, before a large paw cupped the back of your head and that broad tongue dived inside your mouth. Now you were at Dogday’s mercy as you traded saliva, he soon had you feeling a lot like how Catnap looked while he basking in the afterglow, and that scent only got more intense. He tasted like the feline’s seed of course, but he also had his own taste, it was sweet.

“Heeyyy.” Came a jealous whine from beside you, you both paused as you looked to Catnap, who had propped his head up on the side of the bed to watch you two make out. You wondered who he was being more envious of as Dogday barked a laugh. The orange canine ignored Catnap, scooping you up in his arms and carrying you towards their much bigger bed.

“Mmm, still too early for this.” He said with a yawn, Catnap stalked in front of you two, lifting the drapes out of the way in an overly dramatic invitation to reveal their ‘nest’ of pillows, blankets, and fur. Letting Dogday climb in with you first before he slinked in behind. You found yourself cuddled between the two huge monsters who you had to remind yourself had abducted you yesterday. It was nice and warm in here, and the bed was soft and comfortable. Compared to your admittedly cheap lodgings, or when you had to sleep outside in that horrible forest of death, this was so much better. You felt like understood the drapes instinctively as soon as you found yourself under them. They didn’t block all of the light, but they felt protective, like you were hidden away somewhere your nightmares couldn’t find you.

You still weren’t entirely sure how you felt about the entire situation, and the collar around your neck. Dogday’s tongue bath aside you definitely needed a proper bath tomorrow, but you didn’t even know what time it was. Catnap mentioned something before about expecting you to wake up at night, maybe they were nocturnal and were going to expect you to operate the same? A thousand questions started swirling in your head as you pondered, but looking at the two creatures settling against each other comfily, they were already drifting off. Maybe you could ask one or two questions now.

“Hey, before you two fall asleep, you never answered me before about why you chose me? Or…” You paused as another important question struck you that you neglected to ask before, assuming the answer was death. “Wait what would have happened if I said no?” Both sets of eyes shot open to stare straight at you, before they looked to each other, seemingly having a conversation silent conversation over eye contact.

“Well… I felt bad after trying to bite you…” Dogday began, his face grimacing like there was a bad taste in his mouth.

“For one you saved us! Saved me!” Catnap cut in with a smile, before he looked away, his ears folding a bit in a look you recognized as the guilty look he was making earlier. “And then well…” This didn’t bode ‘well’. You felt a sinking feeling in your stomach as you wondered if the alternative was an actual threat of death. Did they expect you to submit or… Die? If that’s the case, you may still not be safe. You had to know.

“Were you actually going to… If I didn’t put on the collar?” You couldn’t bring yourself to say the words, but you hoped the hurt in your voice conveyed your feelings on the matter.

“No! No we wouldn’t of hurt you it’s just…” Dogday spoke, before grimacing again. “More complicated than that.” You moved to try and stand, to distance yourself from the two monsters, but a purple rope wrapped around you tightly, binding you still. It was Catnap’s tail, and he seemed to be able control it with extreme dexterity. Pulling you up against his chest as he wrapped his arms around you protectively.

“We couldn’t have let you go back after finding us Little Star.” Catnap said, his tone levelled and soft, like how he was talking to you after you woke up. “Didn’t you agree that life would be better here?” He asked, a paw gently stroking up and down your back.

“I… It’s a bit soured knowing it was an ultimatum!” You argued, causing Catnap to scoff but his ears stayed lowered in guilt, you were expecting him to get angry like before but this was… Different.

“It’s… More complicated.” Dogday said again before sighing, he looked so tired. “Look we-”

“No.” Catnap cut him off, the canine looking to the feline in confusion before Catnap continued talking. “We’ll tell you. But not tonight. Not now while emotions are high.” You wanted to protest but he kept going. “You are safe here Little Star. I promise you. We won’t let anything harm you.” He spoke as his paw moved away from your back, soon replaced by Dogday’s large bulk as the canine cuddled up around you, trapping you between the two large furry bodies.

“Do you really want to go home?” Dogday asked earnestly, there was raw emotion in his voice, a genuine tone of caring you hadn’t heard directed at you in a long time. You sighed against Catnaps chest, looking up to the feline’s worried face, he was waited anxiously for your answer. When you really considered the difference between home and here…

“No.” As soon as that answer came, both Catnap and Dogday almost deflated as they sighed in relief. “But.” They tensed again, eyes peering down at you with bated breath. “I agreed to stay, but, we’re going to figure out our rules, until I’m happy with them.” You stated it clearly, there was far too much being held from you while they asked for obedience. If this was to be your gilded cage, you were going to fight for as many liberties as you could. Catnap pondered for a moment before Dogday answered for them both.

“Deal.” Dogday said with finality, Catnap looked to him, before nodding.

“Deal, remember I only said you’d maybe have to help around the house if you stayed.” He reaffirmed.

“And then you two will tell me what happens to those that say no.”

Notes:

Sorry for leaving so many untied plot threads, I got this idea and ran with it cause it was FUN! And I wanted to play around with a bit of reader POV! I do have ideas of where we could go from here if I get the time! I'll leave this as the opening introduction to the world and start making a new series about what happens after. Whatcha think? Was the reader POV fine or should I have gone with a named character? If Catnap's gift is forcing people to sleep, what would Dogday's gift be? Or did I already allude to it in the fic?! Are you having a good day?! I hope you are! <3
