Rituals of Kurain

The women of the Fey family are made to train early in preparation for their potential spiritual powers. Upon their fifth birthday, they are to take part in one of the many Kurain rituals.

Four different Kurain rituals require four different accompaniments and four different types of skills they train and present. Who practiced which ritual upon their fifth birthday?

1. Mia's favourite ritual was the Ritual of Protection. Believing in its message is part of the reason why she left Kurain village to become a defense attorney.
2. While Iris is a member of the Fey clan, she does not possess any spiritual powers. This does not stop her from doing her due diligence in any task given to her.
3. Empathy is not a trait known as much to modern Kurain. They are closed off from the world and harsh in their matriarchal stance–which drives away the men they marry. Therefore, it tends to only be women close to family members who can cultivate empathy at such a young age to practice the ritual successfully.
4. The white hood covers all but the wearer's face, closing them off from everything and everyone around them.
5. The Ritual of Truth requires an item to be charged with spiritual power.
6. Maya does not remember the ritual she did as a child.
7. Meditation under waterfalls is a well known Kurain training technique. While it promotes everything but empathy, it also requires the practitioner to strip away everything and bare themselves to the cold.
8. Maya grows to be a powerful spirit medium, but when she was younger she struggled to manifest her own spiritual powers during rituals.
9. The Ritual of Kami is not meant to praise the kami, but to appease them. The ritual shows the kami that the practitioner respects them as greater beings.
10. Because the magatama holds the spirit energy necessary for the ritual, the practitioner can focus on people outside themselves.
11. Pearl can imbue other items with the overwhelming spiritual power she has had from a young age. Because of this, her mother (Morgan Fey) had her present herself as a strong medium without using anything but herself.
12. Music as a performance is a gift.
13. Despite how each of these practices were one when these women were five years old, it was still the oldest of them who could display the most calm.

Mia performed the Ritual of Protection.

Because Iris does not have spiritual powers of her own, we can deduce that not only did she not perform the Ritual of Channeling, but that she would have needed something for the ritual. Therefore, she also can't have had nothing.

To learn empathy, a practitioner would have had to be close to someone else who would help them learn such thing as a child. Iris would not have learnt such a thing from her mother or twin sister. While Pearl had Maya, we see in her introduction that she is closed off to new people and outsiders. Maya and Mia are shown to be close, but Maya was not born until Mia was nine or ten.

We do not know the exact details of Mia's relationship with her mother, other than she wished to clear her name to the extent she left the village became an attorney. Therefore either Maya or Mia could be the one to have displayed their practice in empathy.

The white hood closes one away from others. This means it cannot be used to promote empathy or humility.

The Ritual of Truth requires an item, which means it can only be paired with the magatama or the white hood.

Maya not remembering the ritual she did means she did not perform the Ritual of Channeling, because we know she remembers how to channel. Even if, upon Phoenix meeting her, she struggles with it.

The solitary practice of meditation can promote focus, humilty, and calm. Specifying that this training means nothing else is necessary, means nothing cannot be paired with empathy.

Maya struggling with her powers is a big plot point in the first game. She would have needed something charged with spiritual power. She either needed the magatama or the white hood to help her perform her ritual.

The Ritual of Kami is based on Shinto and Buddist beliefs, like many Kurain beliefs and techniques are. One must show humility to the kami.

Out of all training, humility and empathy are the two which focus on one's interaction with another. This means the magatama must be paired with one of them.

Because of her mother's influence, Pearl performed the ritual which required nothing.

Knowing that the Ritual of Kami is meant as a gift to show the kami the practioner's humility means it must be performed with music.

Mia is the oldest of the four women, so she was the one who presented her training in Calmness in Solitude.
