Chapter Text
At the Cupid HQ, by the job corkboard, newly turned cupid Koharu watched the doves peck around at the ground, waving hello at them.
Just to add another supernatural aspect to her life, they waved back.
Well, not really– they just bobbed their heads at her, cooing louder than usual.
But it counted! Kanna said that they were her co-workers, equal children to the goddess of love as the cupids were, and were just as intelligent. Sort of like dolphins!
What a distant fun fact from high school…
“Heyyyyyy newbie! Why the long face?”
Koharu snapped out of that bittersweet train of thought and turned her attention behind her, rather quickly like a flinch. “C-Chiyo! I didn’t hear you come up behind, I’m sorry I didn’t-”
“Don’t apologize, haha!” Chiyo brandished her uzi and laid beside Koharu. “I wanted to see how quiet I could sneak up on ya, so I can get more stealth strikes on the job. Looks like I’m improving!” She made a ninja sign with her hands. “Ninja cupid…. tatatahhhh~ All those lovers won’t know what’ll hit ‘em!!”
Koharu blinked, and nodded along. Chiyo was just like that, it seems– she was still getting used to everyone’s antics. “Ninja cupids sound cool.” With that comment, she went back to watching the doves mingle, some flying away with the added Chiyo-induced commotion.
Her wings twitched on her back– just another feeling she’d have to get used to now.
Chiyo shifted beside her. “Hey, Koharu– you jealous of those doves yet?”
Koharu’s attention shifted back to Chiyo. “E-Eh?”
“Your wings look itchin’ to fly like them, from the looks of it.” Chiyo spread her own wings, showing them off. “I bet you’d wanna learn how to do it, yeah?”
“O-Oh, well I do think being able to fly would be pretty cool…” Koharu twiddled her thumbs, smiling. “But Kanna promised to teach me one day, when I get more used to the cupid life.” She really hoped it was soon, though, Kanna’s a really good teacher… in her humble opinion, at least. There’s an air to her senpai cupid that makes learning and doing missions a lot less stressful, like nothing could go wrong.
Chiyo tutted. “That lazy bum? Kanna couldn’t fly out to a job unless it was stationed near a 7-11.”
They both looked toward Kanna, who was dozing off under a pile of packaged rice balls.
“....You don’t have to be rude about it…”
“It’s just plain ol’ honesty. But hey, you could be like her and laze around until you get comfy. Or…” Chiyo raised her wings and flapped hard, lifting her off into the sky with a brazen laugh.
Koharu looked up with awe, jaw dropped.
“You could learn now! Get outta your comfort zone and rocket your way back to mortality!!” Chiyo fluttered back down to the ground, stray feathers scattering around. “That, and I can get into an actual fight with you. That would be cool.”
“Y-Yeah, that would be cool!!!” Koharu shot up and nodded eagerly, before backtracking her words. “The flying part, not the fighting part.”
“Too bad, I’m gonna fight you one way or another. I just wanna toughen you up before then. Aerial cupid battles are super hardcore, hehe…” Chiyo chuckled while flipping around her uzi, walking off somewhere.
“Um… Chiyo?” Koharu asked, “Where are you going?”
“Where do you think? Somewhere high. I’m in the mood to fly.” Chiyo looked back at Koharu. “If you wanna come along, be my guest. But I’m going no matter what.” And off she went.
Koharu looked at Chiyo going, and turned back to where Kanna was sleeping. She really did want to keep up her promise with Kanna, especially when she’s done so much for her in such a short and frantic time… but at the same time…
I want to be human again. If flying helps me out with love missions, then… I should take that chance!
Her wings twitched behind her.
Taking this initiative in my life– it’s what Aki would’ve wanted for me.
“H-Hey, wait up Chiyo! I want to learn now!” Koharu ran off after Chiyo, heading to wherever her senior was planning to teach her.
“Hell yeah, that’s what I wanted to hear!”
As those two cupids went off to the mortal realm, Kanna opened an eye from under her food pile.
“Chiyo… you better not make her fly too close to the sun.”
With a reluctant sigh, she got up, unfortunately getting rice all over her vest (“Aw, dangit-”), and flew off to follow them out of sight.
