Work Text:
Izuku had run out of protein powder. Kirishima had been really nice in offering Izuku some of his. But, Kirishima's protein powder leaves a gritty aftertaste in Izuku’s mouth after every swallow. And Izuku refused to do that to himself again. But he also forgot to add his protein powder to the grocery list… That led to Izuku rushing back to campus because if he didn't he would be late. He still couldn't believe he'd actually gotten permission for this. But! Nothing bad had happened. There was no fighting, no mishaps, nothing! Ha! Eat that Uraraka! Izuku can go places without it ending badly.
Izuku may have bumped into a few people on his way back to campus. But he profusely apologized, picked up anything he might have knocked out of someone's hand on his way, and everything was good.
He rushed into the dorms, and ran straight upstairs to get into uniform. Why he didn't put it on before is beyond him. But he quickly put it on now.
Izuku might have started feeling a bit out of breath after getting dressed. But he did run all the way back up to campus from the store. So it made sense. His head was starting to feel a little fuzzy, that didn't make as much sense. But it was okay. Probably from lack of oxygen from the running. Yeah makes sense. Izuku would worry about it later.
Izuku headed down stairs to make said protein shake. He was worried he might have a bruise or two from bumping into walls on the back down the stairs. But when didn't Izuku have a bruise or two? Exactly! He always had one or two or five somewhere on his body. It's fine.
“Sheesh, Midobabe. You look rough. What are you doing?” Mina asks Izuku as he crashes into the kitchen with his…
“M-making m-my p-protein shake.” Izuku looks down at his empty hands. “Sh-shit, I left my p-protein p-powder upstairs.” Izuku mumbles.
“You okay?” Mina asks, she looks concerned.
“My head f-feels f-fuzzy, and m-my body isn’t r-really doing wh-what I want.” Izuku furrows his brow. His came a little too easy. Like something was pushing them out. Which is weird, Izuku usually felt the opposite, like it was hard to get them out. Sure, he stumbles on his words all the time. He had speech lessons for his stutter growing up. But that… nope, not thinking about it, definitely not worrying about it.
“That would be a no, Denki!” She shouts into the other room. Kaminari appears in the doorway.
“Sup?”
“Call Aizawa, now.” Mina says.
Izuku frowns. “W-we don’t need to c-call Aizawa.”
“Why not bro?” Kaminari asks.
“If you call him I’ll get into trouble. And then I’ll be punished and I don’t want to do that.” Izuku frowns. “Why did I just say that?” He mumbles.
“Calling Aizawa.” Kaminari says, his phone already up to his ear.
Izuku frowns. Mina comes over and gently grabs Izuku’s hand. Izuku flinches. Mina’s eyes widened. “It’s okay, Midobabe. It’s just me, let’s go sit down. Okay?”
Izuku nods. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to worry you. You don’t need to worry about me.”
“Please don’t apologize.” Mina says and leads Izuku out onto one of the couches. “Of course I’m going to worry, we’re friends.”
“What’s wrong Midobro?” Kirishima asks. Most of the others are still standing around, class didn’t start for another twenty minutes maybe.
Izuku sighs a little. “What’s not wrong with me?”
Mina frowns deeply. “Not sure. Denki’s calling Aizawa.”
“I’m here.” Izuku looks over at his very tired teacher and tenses.
Aizawa comes over and bends down in front of Izuku. “What’s going on kid?”
“M-Mina m-made me sit d-down. I told her n-not to worry, but she s-says she’s my friend. I think she might have lied when she said it.”
Mina frowns. “I wasn’t lying, Mido.” She whispers, she looks very concerned now.
Aizawa slowly nods. "Problem Child, are you drunk?"
Izuku blinks. "No… Dr-drunk, Sensei?"
“Really Sensei?” Kaminari mumbles. “I mean, it’s Midoriya we’re talking about, he’s probably the last person in our class who’ll do that.”
“Even good boys can break the rules.” Jiro says. “You shouldn’t judge covers, Denki.”
Aizawa sighs a little, still looking at Izuku with his dark eyes. Izuku isn’t sure why, but he feels terrified. "Midoriya, have you consumed alcohol this morning?"
Izuku’s arms flail, but he quickly stops because it makes him dizzy. "No… W-what? O-o-of course not A-A-Aizawa Sensei! I'm not allowed to d-dr-drink. I'm u-under age! And w-where would I even get alcohol? My mom doesn't really drink, w-well she'll have a glass of wine or two with Auntie Mitsuki, but she doesn't have alcohol in the house. Especially not after dad left." Izuku's words come out so fast at the end he's not sure if they sounded like words. Also, why did he bring his dad up? Izuku doesn't talk about his dad.
“Fuck,” Kacchan says somewhere in the room, Izuku isn’t sure where, he’s a little dizzy.
Mr. Aizawa pinches the bridge of his nose. "You look dazed Midoriya, and you’re acting strangely. Did you eat Sero's medicinal brownies?”
“Nah, man. I keep those in my room.” Sero adds.
“I did not eat Sero's weed brownies. Not after last time. They made me more paranoid than I already am… I didn't mean to tell you that.” Izuku frowns. “Why did I tell you that?”
Aizawa sighs, he sends a look to his left, Izuku thinks maybe that look is for Sero. He’s not supposed to share. “Did anything happen on your trip to get your protein powder, Midoriya?”
“No. Everything went well.”
Aizawa sighs. “Okay, how about we take you to Recovery Girl?”
“Can't do that.” Izuku says.
Aizawa slowly raises an eyebrow. “Why not?”
“She said she wouldn’t treat me anymore.” Izuku's eyes widened. “I didn't mean to say that.”
“What the hell?” Uraraka says. “Is she allowed to tell us that?”
“No.” Momo says. “She could lose her license for that.”
Aizawa's eyes blaze for a second, before his face goes back to being blank. “What do you mean Recovery Girl won't treat you?”
“After the whole hand surgery thing after the sports festival, Recovery Girl said she wouldn’t heal me anymore.” Izuku frowns. “Will you knock me out? I would prefer if you knock me out so I stop saying stupid shit.”
Mina blinks at Izuku. “Did you seriously just ask our teacher to knock you out?”
“Yes.” Izuku says.
Aizawa shakes his head. “No. Problem Child. I will not knock you out. Let's… How about we go back up to your room, and you can sleep this off?”
“I haven’t been able to sleep properly since Shigaraki threatened to dust me in the mall and now I have nightmares about him doing it. Also I have nightmares about the camp where I find Kacchan’s dead body…” Izuku groans, he turns to Kaminari. “No, I’m serious. Electrocute me. That’ll be so much more easier than whatever the hell is going on. Please?”
“Sorry, Midoriya. But I’m not comfortable with that.” Kaminari mumbles.
“What does that feel like?” Sato asks.
Izuku groans. “Like it won’t stop. It’s like all the words in my head keep leaving my mouth and I do not like it. All the words are supposed to stay in my head because half of them are weird and creepy, and the other half are too much for most people.”
“Weird and creepy?” Aizawa asks. “Why would you think your thoughts are weird and creepy?”
“Because that’s what everyone told me in middle school.” Izuku frowns. “Are you sure you can’t knock me out? I’m pretty sure that this will be much better if I’m passed out. For everyone. Please knock me out.”
“Stop asking to be knocked out. I’m starting to worry about you. Please?” Asui asks.
“Why? Nobody ever worries about me. Why would they?”
“Ooookay.” Sero says, “How do we make him stop?”
“I’ll stop if someone knocks me out.” Izuku tilts his head to the side. “Hey, Kacchan. Knock me out, come on, I know you know how to.”
Kacchan scoffs. “Shut up, Deku. Nobodies knocking you out.”
“Why would you even think any of us would be comfortable knocking you out?” Ida asks.
“My classmates used to knock me unconscious all the time in middle school. It’s so easy, somebody could slam my head into the wall and-” Mina has covered Izuku’s mouth with her hand.
“Please do not continue that sentence. For all of our sanities.”
“Why were people knocking him out in middle school?” Ojiro asks.
“Maybe in like gym class?” Hagakure mumbles.
Izuku grabs Mina’s wrist and removes it from his mouth, but keeps a hold of it because feeling Mina’s pulse is nice. “No, the older kids would chase me after school. You know, they liked chasing the quirkless kid.”
“Shit.” Kacchan mumbles.
“Midoriya, you have a quirk.” Todoroki informs.
“It's super strength, how could you forget that?” Uraraka asks.
“I didn’t forget.”
“Then why did you call yourself quirkless?”
“Because I used to be.”
“Knock it off.” Kacchan growls. “Stop fucking hounding him. Whatever this quirk is, it seems to only work if you ask him questions. So stop fucking asking him questions.”
Izuku blinks. And finds that Kacchan is right. If nobody asks a question, his words don’t feel like they’re rushing out of his mouth anymore.
“A quirk?” Ida asks. “What makes you think this is a quirk?” Ida aims the question at Kacchan, and Izuku finds that he doesn’t feel the urge to answer, so he sinks back into the couch sighing deeply. He wished the dizziness would go away.
“Deku didn’t consume anything this morning. What he did do was go down to the store to get his specific brand of protein powder. He must’ve gotten hit with a quirk then.” Kacchan says with a shrug.
“Why didn’t he just use mine?” Kirishima asks.
“It leaves a gross taste in my mouth that turns my stomach and makes me want to vomit. It’s a texture thing. Autism is funny sometimes.”
“Autism?” Shoji asks.
“Are you even autistic?” Jiro asks.
“Yeah, my teachers in elementary school had me tested. I passed that test with flying colors.”
“That explains so much,” Uraraka mumbles.
“It really does.” Asui says.
“Okay, enough.” Aizawa says. “Everybody head to class, or you’ll be late. Except for Midoriya. You’re staying here.”
Izuku sinks deeper into the couch and sighs.
“How long do you think the quirk will last?” Momo asks.
“Touch based quirks like this can last anywhere from fifteen minutes to seventy-four hours.” Izuku informs. “Unless it’s an on and off touch quirk, like Uraraka’s, then it won’t end until I’m touched again. But from the small facts we have, and given the fact that the quirk most likely wasn’t a five-finger-touch quirk because nobody grabbed me like that, I can assume it’s a time based quirk and will fade in time.”
“For the love of god will you stop asking non-directed questions. Direct your questions to Aizawa or don’t fucking ask.” Kacchan growls.
“But that was informative.” Kirishima mumbles. “And I like it when Midobro rambles about quirks.”
“Class.” Aizawa says sternly. “Now.”
And with that a majority of the class starts to leave. Mina tries to go, but Izuku grabs her wrist. Aizawa just nods.
“It's fine.”
Kacchan comes and sits down on Izuku’s other side. “Let’s watch an All Might movie.” He says, grabbing a remote.
“Fine.” Aizawa says. “But nobody else is missing class. I’ll come check on you three in a little while.”
With that Aizawa leaves, Izuku sinks even deeper into the couch, gently rubbing his thumb back and forth on Mina’s wrist. Kacchan starts Izuku’s favorite All Might movie, and then starts with the commentary that Izuku’s used to, except this time all of Kacchan’s comments aren’t questions. Just statements.
Izuku sighs. His head was still dizzy, but this is much better than trying to sleep this off.
