Escaping the void

Summary:

Lyra Black and her younger Brother Regulus escape from their abusive parents to the Potters house.

Work Text:

Walburga Black was well aware of what people thought of her but she could say she at least knew her children. She had a son and a daughter.

When her first child was born she had what she believed to be the next male heir to the house of black but as she watched the kid grow she could tell something wasn’t right. Her child was quite around family and friends but had a rebellious streak much like she did as a kid. She would watch the kid fuss over their hair and marvel at her makeup she would use. She soon had her second child just less than a year after the first and this was what was believed to be a sweet baby girl. Growing up though this kid would flat out refuse to wear dresses and she stood by helpless as her husband would punish both of her kids for their behaviour. She knew she couldn’t do anything against her husband but she tried to do good by her kids and in the end it was a few simple words that would save them from Orion.

Lyra Black was grabbing clothes and chucking them into her suitcase and trying to grab anything else she may need and put them into her duffle bag. School work, text books, hair brush and make-up all got piled into her bag. She then went to her brother's room and she did the same with his stuff, making sure she grabbed his binder and a sports bra for him before lugging all of it back to her room where her brother was waiting curled into a ball on her bed.

He was on his side in a green ball gown style dress with silver embellishments and his waist length hair was in a ruined french knot and he had make up on too. He had smudged eyeshadow, streaked eye liner and horribly smeared lipstick. The girl could see that the dress was falling off the young boy's shoulders and had tears in the stitching. Lyra used some magic to shrink their stuff and took Regulus’ hand and led him to her bathroom as quickly as she could. Once they were there she sat him down on the toilet before grabbing a pair of scissors while Regulus watched her every move. She then undid the hair carefully pulling free the silk ribbon and watching the hair fall out of its deccitaly arranged formation. When it settled around the young boy's waist Lyra brushed it out gently before holding up the scissors and asking “ready for a haircut?”

She made quick work of the first snips to shorten the hair into an uneven choppy bob just above the shoulders before maticusly working with what was left. The girl spent around thirty minutes arranging cutting and styling the hair and when she stepped away so her brother could see his reflection he almost cried at the sight before him. His hair which was once long and wavy sitting at his waist was now short, fluffy and had bouncing curls. Lyra then took a deep breath, took her brother's hand and pulled him to his feet before looking out of the door to check the coast was clear. She couldn’t see any danger so she pulled Regulus along behind her and guided him through the halls of the house trying to reach the exit without being seen. Just as they reached the door a hand grabbed the young girl's arm and she was turned to find herself face-to-face with her mother. She stood bent over with a worried and terrified expression on her usually blank face. She thrust two wrapped boxes into Lyra’s hands before lightly kicking the two kids, a pair of trainers each, all while looking around to make sure her husband was nowhere in sight. It was while this was going on that Lyra remembered moments from her childhood when her mother had shown her love, even after she was sorted into Gryffindor, and how she was only cruel when her father was around. She knew her mother only wanted the best for them but couldn’t argue against Orion so she was doing her best to help them now by aiding the escape.

Once they had their shoes on and tied their mother pulled them into a tight hug one at a time and placed a winter cloak over their shoulders to keep them warm before straightening back up and morphing her face back into her stoic blank expression once more as they heard the noise of heavy footsteps coming from their fathers study. Then they saw him standing at the top of the stairs. Orion Black was tall standing at six foot and had black hair that was cut short and tidy and was starting to grey. He had a trimmed beard and his grey eyes were as cold as steel. He stared at them as he descended the stairs and stood next to his wife as she fought to keep her composure. Then Walburga opened the door and gently gripped Lyra’s arm. Lyra knew she was trying to make it look harder than it was so she easily manoeuvred her body and fake whimpered as her mother led her out of the house and just before she slammed the door shut she shot her a small and final smile.

After walking away from the house Lyra made Regulus stop so she could think through how to get to the Potters. Making her choice she summoned the Knight Bus to take them to the edge of Godric’s Hollow and then they would walk the rest of the way. They got on the bus and endured the bumpy ride and were glad to disembark once they reached their destination. They then began the short walk to the Potter's house which was a fairly large house that was two stories with an attic. The drive up to the house was clean even in the stormy weather and the front garden was well kept and trimmed. When the two finally made it to the door Regulus could barely stand and Lyra was starting to worry about him but she knew that Mrs Potter would be able to help as she was a healer. She lifted a hand and knocked on the door and waited. From inside she could hear people moving around and then locks being undone. Then the door opened to reveal her best friend James Potter in his pyjamas looking really confused.
