Chapter Text
“Red, come to bed.”
The future queen’s head snapped up as soon as she heard her wife call her name. She immediately noticed how dark the sky had gotten. Red sighed, knowing full well Chloe was surely not happy with her. Forcing her best smile, Red turned to look at her blue haired wife.
“I just have to finish this, my love.” Red’s smile faltered when she received a glare from Chloe. “I’m sorry.”
Chloe rolled her eyes before throwing the blankets off of her and standing up. She walked up until she was standing close enough to be towering over Red. “You’ve been staying up late every day since your mom left you in charge of the kingdom two weeks ago. These papers can wait until tomorrow. You’re coming to bed now, Red.”
Red looked back at the stack of papers she still needed to read, and sighed one more time. It was only then that she felt how tired she truly was. Without thinking, the redheaded princess rubbed her eyes with the back of her hands. Then, she felt Chloe’s arms slowly embrace her from behind before also feeling a soft kiss on the crown of her head. Her wife’s affection made Red smile softly.
“You’re right.” Red admitted quietly. “I’m exhausted.”
Without a word, Chloe slowly led Red to their bed. The heart shaped bed was big enough to allow them to sleep in it without ever touching each other, but they always slept right in the middle, cuddled in each other’s arms. They did not waste any time to take that exact position. Red’s head laid on Chloe’s chest as they held each other close. Chloe clapped her hands twice, and the lights in the room went out.
“I love that technology.”
Red chuckled. “Don’t let Maddox hear you say that. His head is big enough.”
“Noted.”
A comfortable silence quickly enveloped the room, and Red’s eyes slowly began to droop. Chloe felt her wife’s body completely relax in her arms. A heavy sigh left her lips once she realized Red had already fallen asleep. She hated how her wife was overworking herself since the Queen Of Hearts decided to take a vacation to Cinderellasburg. Chloe tried to talk it out with Red, but the girl always refused to admit anything was wrong.
Chloe really missed her late night talks with her wife. Or their mornings sleeping until noon. Breakfast in bed. Late nights escapades in Wonderland.
With those thoughts in mind, Chloe decided she would write to Bridget in the morning. This needed to stop.
When morning rolled around, Chloe was not surprised to find the bed cold and empty. Red had left a red rose on her pillow, along with a small note.
A rose for the most beautiful rose. Have a good day, my love. - Red
Red’s lipstick on the note made Chloe wish she could have gotten an actual kiss to wake her up. Then, she brought the rose to her nose and the distinctive smell of Wonderland’s roses hit her in full force, making her smile.
Chloe got out of bed, and placed the roses with the others she received the mornings before. She quickly got dressed before taking a quick look in the mirror. She had taken to wearing Wonderland’s signature colors, and she had found herself liking them a little more everyday. She still thought it did not suit her as well as it suited her wife, but that was to be expected. Red had been born to wear the mixture of black and red of Wonderland.
After a quick stop in the bathroom, Chloe made her way to Red’s old study. She knew her wife did not use it anymore since she took the Queen’s duties. There, Chloe took a seat in front of the desk. She took a piece of paper and a pen, and wrote a letter to Bridget. She hoped her message would be loud and clear.
As soon as she was done, Chloe decided to join Red in the Queen’s office. She stopped by the mailer’s office to make sure her letter would be sent as soon as possible. Once she joined her wife, Chloe found Red tenser than she had ever seen her before. Red’s jaw was clenched, and she looked about ready to destroy the man in front of her. Chloe graciously slipped between the people in the room, quickly finding her seat next to her wife. When she was seated, Chloe noted the way some of them looked at her with disdain, others with curiosity. Wonderlandians were still getting used to Chloe’s presence in Wonderland, as well as the open barrier between Auradon and Wonderland. The looks still managed to pull at Chloe’s heart string. It was painful to see them look at her that way.
“Everybody, out.” Everyone in the room became silent after the princess’ order was heard. “Did I stutter? I said : out!”
People quickly walked out of the room, whispers filling the air. It was only once they were alone that Red’s grip on the arms of her chair loosened. Chloe placed a gentle hand on top of Red’s, gaining her wife’s attention.
“Rough day?”
Red nodded stiffly. “I should have stayed in bed.”
Chloe sighed as she squeezed Red’s hand. “I wish you had.”
“You know I can’t do that.” Red turned her hand so their fingers could be laced together. “I will probably have people coming right back in here in a few minutes.”
Chloe hummed, but her face showed her displeasure. “Did you have something to eat this morning?”
Red’s face fell. “No. I know I promised you I would, I’m sorry.”
Chloe stood up as she slowly shook her head. “I’ll get you something from the kitchen.”
Her wife’s disappointment made Red’s heart painfully ache in her chest. “Chloe, I’m sorry.”
“We’ll talk later.” Chloe opened the door, not surprised to find people on the other side. “You have things to do.”
Once Chloe left the room and the people came in, Red felt like her wife took her heart with her. She really hated when Chloe was upset with her. It felt wrong in so many ways.
