Chapter 1: The Blinding Jewel

Chapter Text

The blistering summer's of the Ehime prefecture were cooling down significantly by the time October had commenced, offering reprieve for the denizens who went about their day to day tasks.

As the prefecture was situated in the south of Japan, the autumnal weather was mild, adding to the rustic feeling of what the location was renowned for, such as its onsens and castles.

On the outskirts of the bustling capital of Matsuyama, a row of apartments shielded by the coastal side lay hidden in the shadows of the rising sun.

With the exuberant rent, most occupants often had roommates, such was the case for Houraisan Kaguya.

One didn't need to be robbed via weaponry in broad daylight these days; societal and economical strife proved this.

In the small kitchen of the apartment, she waited for a response from said roommate whom was half asleep, chugging down green tea like her life depended on it.

"Well? How do I look, Reimu?".

"Like an office lady" Reimu grinned, taking in the blazer, skirt, flats and shirt attire, "Come on, that's a compliment. It means you look the part! A good looking one".

"How Alice puts up with you, I wonder" Kaguya smirked as she checked the contents of her bag on the table.

"I'm charming, or so she says".

"Alice may need a brain scan".

Reimu rolled her eyes, "Good thing you'll be working for such a notable pharmaceutical company so I bet you can arrange it".

Kaguya felt the nerves surface at the reminder whilst she checked her watch, noting that she should be setting off soon.

Eientei.

Said pharmaceutical company was indeed renowned and as someone who graduated from the Ehime Prefectural University of Health & Science 8 years ago, Kaguya was hoping that this would be the job which puts her on the map.

For most of her 20s, she had drifted from office firms to medical firms, each one closing down given the frightening competition so she hadn't had the chance to get onto the career ladder.

But her years of experience had landed her the interview at Eientei, so needing to get her foot in the door of the pharmaceutical world, Kaguya was fortunate enough to be hired by the company after the success of the interview.

She would become the CEO's personal assistant, a title which carried a steady pay check, numerous connections, but the workload to go with it.

Hence the apprehension she felt as she apportioned the stresses around her mind rather than focusing on it.

Which was easier said than done.

Reimu sighed and stood up, walking to the woman and flicked her forehand, "You're gonna do great, Kaguya. You've worked hard for this so get out there on your first day and show them what you're made of".

Kaguya fixed her full fringe, "At this point, I am made up of 80% coffee" she grinned, her expression soft "Thank you, Reimu. I'll do my best".

Reimu and Alice had been helping her prep for this and Kaguya couldn't be more grateful to have such supportive friends.

The woman's move away from Nara to Eihime for university hadn't been smooth sailing and had cost Kaguya her relationship with her parents.

So Kaguya had a lot staked on this endeavour.

As she stepped out of her apartment, Kaguya looked around before heading to the train station, a determinism notable around her whilst she started the next chapter of her life.

***

Closer to the city and in the more affluent area, the scene scape was taken over with high rise buildings, primarily made up of penthouses and condos.

The influx of business in said area kept on booming and was a hub of all manners of exports and imports.

Which is where the headquarters for Eientei was located, close to the waterfront.

Its founder, Yagokoro Eirin, stared at the time on her phone that morning and the time read 5:45 AM.

Early starts and late finishes; this had been her life.

Being a wealthy CEO who runs her own  company in a bustling city certainly had it perks, and Eirin considered herself lucky that she could fulfil her dreams. Achieving such goals in her late 30s, and as a woman was a monumental feat. But what made her circumstances complete was that she was married to her university sweetheart for 12 years.

Turning over on her side, Eirin took in the sleeping face of her wife.

Blonde hair spilled out over the dark blue pillow as a hand was over her waist beneath the duvet, the bare skin in touch with Eirin's.

The intimacy of last night was a recurring occurrence and it reiterated that the passion between them hadn't fizzled out.

She loved her wife, it went without saying.

Eirin didn't want to ponder on it and sat up in bed, reaching for her robe at the end of it when a sultry voice called out to her, lined with sleep.

"Where you are you going so early?".

Violet eyes gazed up at her while a hand reached out and ran down Eirin's back, nails grazing skin.

"I have preparation to do for the meeting later. Also, the new recruits are joining us today, including my new personal assistant".

Yukari smirked, "Are you still angry at Junko for stealing Reisen away?".

The doctor didn't take the bait and rolled her eyes, "She did not steal her away".

"She did, stole her heart in the process" her wife chuckled, "Is the meeting with Kanako?".

Eirin turned and faced Yukari, "That is right. You ought to get some sleep while you can, Yukari. It's the final hearing for your case today".

"Indeed it is" Yukari agreed, tracing her index finger over Eirin's clavicle which was visible below the neck of her nightgown.

"What is the outlook on the success? If you can share, that is".

Yukari moved up and scooted close to her wife, lifting her upper body up enough to kiss Eirin's shoulder.

The doctor closed her eyes and placed a hand behind Yukari's head to keep her in place, that mischievous tongue tracing up her neck and then to her ear, biting down on the lobe.

"Well, I am sworn to secrecy.." Yukari murmured before moving back and laying in bed, her arms behind her head which accentuated her body, free of any clothes, "But if there is anyone who could get it out of me, I'm sure it is you".

Calculating how much time she had, Eirin returned to bed and straddled her wife's hips whilst placing her hands on either side of her head, leaning down to kiss Yukari.

***

The top floor of Eientei was essentially Eirin's office, one half of the floor her designated space while the area outside the door would be Kaguya's office.

There was a single elevator at the other end of the room, as well as a door leading to the stairs for emergency exits.

Sat at her desk, Kaguya felt the nerves accrue as Eirin buzzed her in.

So she steeled herself, tapped into the casual confidence she has and stepped into Eirin's office.

Eirin motioned for Kaguya to come in and take a seat in front of her large desk, "Welcome to Eientei, Kaguya.

The woman bowed lightly, "Thank you, Yagokoro-".

Before the honorific could be used, Eirin stopped her, "Just Eirin is fine".

"Oh, is that really alright?".

"The main employees address me with the honorific but those working closer to me are exempt from it. I hope to maintain a formal yet friendly partnership with you, Kaguya. As you will be responsible for the management of my time, we will be in close proximity often".

The orotund voice was soft yet commending, matching Eirin's demeanour as the woman stood up.

The thin rimmed glasses framed icy blue eyes, along with the parted silver fringe, her long braided hair behind her with a black ribbon. Over the contrast of the black shirt which was tucked into a grey knee length pencil skirt, it was as if the silver strands were glowing.

Kaguya knew of Yagokoro Eirin; everyone in the medicinal world did.

But to see her in person, to be present in front of the imposing yet calming woman, it was an entirely different sensation.

Kaguya kept her hands on her knees, "I understand".

The doctor retrieved a file and sat down again, expression neutral yet not aggressive as she flipped through what was Kaguya's file.

It was then that Kaguya noticed the wedding ring, another detail she was aware of.

"You have an impressive resume, Kaguya" Eirin lauded and Kaguya felt like she couldn't breath.

To be praised by someone she admired, it felt surreal.

"Thank you very much" she smiled, "I understand you also graduated from Ehime Health and Science? We had many presentations based on your studies and theories, so to be here feels like an incredible opportunity".

Kaguya knew how this all worked, so she switched on her charm, hoping to appear confident at the very least.

"Well, you have certainly earned the right to be here" Eirin replied, "Tell me, after graduating, what field in this profession did you have in mind?".

From then on, Eirin and Kaguya continued their discussion for about an hour and Eirin made sure to reassure the younger woman that this wasn't another interview so she could relax.

They then went over the roles and responsibilities Kaguya would be in charge of while moving to Kaguya's workspace where Eirin could teach her the basics.

Kaguya would undergo a month of actual training so this was merely a casual approach for Eirin to ensure that Kaguya was comfortable with her role.

To work for a pharmaceutical company involved troves of privacy and security briefings, something Kaguya would learn during her training.

Despite the arduous efforts, Kaguya was a fast learning and adaptable which is exactly what Eirin needed in a personal assistant, someone who could aggregate all aspects of her schedule.

The two women would begin to forge a partnership which helped to ease the pressures of Eirin's schedule, and in return, Kaguya was opening doors for herself.

However, Kaguya was unaware of what lay in wait for her.

This singular decision to work for Eirin would unleash a torrent of events which would alter all of their lives.

Chapter 2: Under The Moonlight

Chapter Text

A month later, Kaguya had acclimated to her role as Eirin's personal assistant well and had gained the admiration of many of the other employees due to her diligence.

Of course, Kaguya wasn't naive enough to believe everyone had good intentions, nor did they share what was beneath their masks so she was cautious and kept her work associates as nothing but that.

Eirin and Kaguya exchanged pleasantries from day to day, but didn't socialise much beyond the details of their work together

There was a meeting at the beginning and end of every day to ensure that they are on the same page.

So there wasn't a chance of them getting to know each other too intimately, at least not to begin with.

Kaguya was on the phone when the elevator opened up, the sound of heels alerting her of the new arrival as she finished the call.

"Yes, she will rearrange the meeting for the 3rd of February 2025. I will pass on the details" she confirmed.

A blonde was stood in front of her desk, watching her with amused eyes and a coy smirk, the wedding ring on her finger visible.

Kaguya was well aware as to whom this woman was.

"The blood bank under Chiyari is the one which was agreed upon. Perfect, we will keep you posted of the details. Thank you and have a nice day".

Kaguya stood up and greeted the woman but she was beaten to it, "So you must be Houraisan Kaguya".

She bowed lightly, "Yes, it's nice to meet you".

A hand was outstretched and Kaguya found the gesture unusual, but Eirin had mentioned that her wife was well travelled.

"Yakumo Yukari" the blonde smiled and shook Kaguya's hand, "The pleasure is mine, Kaguya. My wife speaks highly of you"

"She does?".

Yukari grinned, "She does. Eirin has gone through her fair share of assistants after Reisen and none of them have been up to the task" she explained, "Truthfully, I found them all a bore too".

"Lacking a sense of humour? Or too much like a placebo?" Kaguya remarked, hoping she wasn't out of line.

"Exactly" Yukari winked, "And lack of sense in general. It seems like you have broken the mould, Kaguya".

"Oh, you're too kind" the woman said, not expecting such high praise, "I think her phone call should be ending-".

Kaguya had glanced into the window just as Eirin had opened the door, smiling at her wife, "Yukari, are you bothering my assistant?".

"Me? I would do no such thing" Yukari feigned dejection as she chuckled, "I like her already".

Eirin smiled at Kaguya, "Do excuse Yukari whenever she comes here. A lawyer with as much free time as she has is rare to come by, and yet, somehow she manages".

"Rude" Yukari tutted before stepping into Eirin's office, "Please excuse us, Kaguya. I need to have a word with this one in regards to her fabricated tales about me".

With that, the duo retreated to the office and Kaguya sat down, her knees feeling weak for some reason.

That reason being the notorious lawyer whom was Yakumo Yukari.

When one hired Yukari, they didn’t simply want to win, they wanted their opposition to be ruined, never to be able to rebuild themselves again.

It made sense that Eirin would have such a high achieving partner to match her and when Kaguya glanced into the office, she felt drawn to the sight of the two.

They oozed the sentiments of being a power couple, cognizant of the world, knowing how to orchestrate those around them.

However, apparently Yukari wasn't as reserved as Eirin and was sat on her wife's lap with her arms around her shoulders. With her back blocking them and Eirin's arms around her waist, it wasn't difficult to deduce what they were doing.

Kaguya quickly turned her gaze back to her computer and redirected Eirin's calls till they were done.

When she went home that night, the image of Eirin and Yukari, behaving so intimately, wouldn't leave her mind.

That was Kaguya's first introduction to Yukari and it had left a lasting impression.

***

On occasion and when necessary, Kaguya was given a tour of the labs in the adjacent building.

Since the company was working on a new drug, the activity in the building was higher than usual and Eirin wanted to give Kaguya a feel of the environment. She was aware that this wasn't Kaguya's first experience in such an environment but the scale of her company compared to others would offer an insight.

Dressed in lab coats and gloves, Eirin and Kaguya were walking in the cultures lab, the contents in the room preserved by the cold temperature.

It was quiet, only the humming of the machines and the occasional footsteps of lab technicians being heard, as well as Eirin's low voice whilst she was explaining everything.

"We are hoping to find a solution to at least slow the progression of ocular conditions such as cataracts or keratoconus".

"Ah I see. Neither of these have a cure yet, do they?" Kaguya remembered, "If this serum is successful, it would offer more time for the patients".

"Precisely. That being said, strides have been made in the synthetic corneal treatment for the latter, so there is an alternative".

Kaguya stared intently at the array of petri dishes lined up, the samples between them coalescing.

"Even to this day, it never fails to amaze me how far scientific development has come".

She stood back up and saw that Eirin was looking at her, nodding once, "Indeed. While there are flaws in the modern world, the technological and scientific paths have been beneficial in a multitude of ways".

They continued walking around as a question was burning on the tip of Kaguya's tongue.

"So, what was your first venture into this world?" she asked, "I know there are brief mentions on the company's website as to how you started, but..I feel like there is more".

Eirin chuckled at Kaguya's knowing smile, the dark hair tied up revealing more of her face.

"As an insider of the industry, it should not surprise me that you are aware that there is always another story" she said, "Perhaps something that the tabloids have mentioned?".

"Please, anyone with half a brain cell should know to take tabloid news with a grain of salt" Kaguya replied.

Once again, Kaguya's startling perceptive nature continued to impress Eirin.

Kaguya had a calming personality, but behind those brown eyes, there were questions, curiosity, and confidence.

She had chosen Reisen's replacement remarkably so.

"Well, you may have earned an insight into this evasive information" she joked as she opened the door for Kaguya to step out first, "Mind you, I cannot promise it will be as riveting as you are hoping for it to be".

They progressed on with the tour while Eirin shared some details about her past, subjects regarding her family, her own experiences with death and other harmless snippets.

Kaguya hung onto every word, like Eirin had crafted the moon with each letter and let it shine in the night sky, showcasing her brilliance for the world to see.

To have someone she admired talking to her this freely was something Kaguya couldn't have anticipated, so she wanted to savour every moment with Eirin.

***

Over the week, Kaguya and Eirin's work relationship would continue to strengthen, more so since deadlines were approaching.

More often than not, they would have working lunches together, be it at the office, the cafeteria or a nearby restaurant.

Everyone could feel the strain of the deadlines as winter approached, so there wasn't much time to breath between meetings, press conferences and quality control.

Seated on the sofa in the office, Kaguya had her laptop open on the desk as she ate her sandwich with one hand whilst motioning to the spreadsheet on the screen.

"What if we were to move around the date that Zanmu Corp are set to hold their release event? We have openings in March and April".

"That would be a solution" Eirin agreed, "My biggest concern is their tactics of using smaller companies to obscure our release schedule".

"Has that happened before?".

Eirin sat back and sipped her second cup of coffee whilst removing her glasses, "They did it to Yuuma a few years ago. Incidentally, they then merged with her company, so that could either be a positive or negative result for Yuuma. One cannot tell with her given her impolitic tendencies".

"One door opens, another closes" Kaguya chuckled before sighing, taking in the slight redness around Eirin's blue irises, "You need to eat food, Eirin".

"Now you sound like my wife" the doctor smiled, "I have a propensity to forgo such habits during these times".

"You mean like eating? Shocking" Kaguya laughed as she retrieved Eirin's bento box and placed it next to her, "I know you are my boss but you are forbidden from touching that laptop until you have eaten half of the food here..at least".

"Well, you drive a hard bargain but I'll relent" Eirin said and picked up the chopsticks, "Are you doing well, Kaguya? To start at a time like this isn't ideal for anyone let alone as my personal assistant".

It was true that Kaguya went home and almost passed out instantly, needing to be roused by Reimu to eat, more often these days.

But this is exactly what she had wanted.

As strenuous as it was, Kaguya was enjoying her work.

Eirin, along with most of the other employees, she had bonded with and enjoyed their company. Not to mention that the work was rewarding and more so, it was setting her up for her future.

Kaguya looked at Eirin and smiled, "I think it took a bit of time to get started, but I'm getting to a place where I feel like I could spend years here".

"That makes me pleased to hear" Eirin answered, appreciating the honesty, "Then, moving forward, let us continue to work towards that future".

"Sounds like a plan".

The comfortable atmosphere continued to settle for the two as they learned more about each other, not just work related.

Kaguya wouldn't have assumed that Eirin smiled as much as she did while Kaguya's quirky side to her personality was showing.

It helped to whittle down the boundaries, at least enough to become more relaxed around each other which could only be beneficial for their partnership.

***

More late shifts would pass as Eientei was in the grips of their final push for the new medication they were releasing.

Eirin checked the time to see that it was almost 8 PM, the night sky being an indicator of that as she went to her desk and checked off a few things on her list.

On the sofa, Kaguya was resting and Eirin felt relieved and rueful at the same time.

Despite her visible lassitude, Kaguya had pulled off her tasks with minimal problems whilst seeing to those sudden hurdles which cropped up, thus removing additional burdens for Eirin.

The doctor walked over to the coat rack near the door and collected one of her heavier coats before quietly moving to where Kaguya was asleep. She then gently placed the cream coloured coat over Kaguya's body and made sure she was covered before taking a moment to just take her in.

"Thank you for your hard work, Kaguya".

It was whispered but Eirin hoped that Kaguya was well aware of how grateful she was.

Seeing how at ease she seemed, it made Eirin take in the finer details of her expression, soft and stress free.

Anyone with eyes could see how Kaguya was like an otherworldly beauty, and Eirin saw it too.

But it wasn't something she needed to focus on and thankfully, she heard her phone ring at her desk to pull her away.

She sat down and brought the phone to her ear as her wife's soothing tone worked like a balm in settling her.

"Hello, sweetheart" Yukari said, "I was certain that you would be home before me tonight".

"Hm, that was the plan" the doctor answered and rubbed the back of her neck, "There was a hitch with the data we were receiving so unfortunately, that took a bit of time to resolve. I'm sorry, Yukari".

"No need to apologise, I expected something as such occurring. That being said, I am getting concerned about these hours. When did you last sleep through the night?".

Eirin tried to think of said night but her mind couldn't even conjure up the time and she heard her wife's sigh.

"Will you be on your way soon?".

"I'm going to give Kaguya a lift home and then I will be on my way" Eirin answered and looked over at the woman, "She has fallen asleep too".

"Eirin".

"I know, I know" Eirin quickly assuaged, "She has some days off before the holidays".

"Really, she deserves a raise for even managing to keep up with you" the blonde commented, "You are a demanding woman, my love".

Eirin smiled, "Well, only those who can keep up with me will stay by my side, won't they?" she teased.

"Ah, so that is why we have been married for 15 years".

The doctor chuckled as she was once again reminded that Kaguya and Yukari were quite similar, quick witted and sharp.

It was probably another reason why she and Kaguya got along as well as they did.

They spoke on the phone for a while longer until Kaguya woke up and apologised profusely but Eirin reiterated that there was no need.

Soon after, they left the building and Eirin drove Kaguya home, pulling up near the entrance of her apartment.

"Please get some rest tonight, Kaguya" Eirin said when Kaguya yawned behind her hand again, "Just another 2 weeks of this".

"I will" Kaguya ensured as she faced Eirin, "I'm sorry about falling asleep".

"What did I say before about apologising?" the doctor smiled.

"Something about another 2 weeks of it?".

Eirin shook her head at the grinning woman.

Definitely Yukari like.

Kaguya then stepped out the car, "Goodnight, Eirin. I'll see you tomorrow".

"Till then, Kaguya".

She waved once more before heading to the apartment as Eirin waited until she was safely inside.

The warmth of the car was comfortable so she took a moment to look at the area, quiet and seemingly safe. It helped that Eientei was close by, at least by public transport, so Eirin hoped that Kaguya would utilise this and take her time in the morning.

Eirin then drove home which would take another half an hour when she pulled up to her apartment's private underground parking lot.

Knowing Yukari, she would still be awake at this time so Eirin was looking forward to seeing her.

The shoes went off at the entrance and her coat was placed in the coat room before she walked in and headed up the staircase.

Yukari's own schedule had geared up too, so she knew her wife was dealing with her demanding workload, which is why she wasn't surprised to find her in her office when Eirin entered the room.

"I'm back".

The blonde had already made her way to Eirin and wrapped her arms behind her shoulders, feeling how tense Eirin was so she held her tightly.

"Welcome home, Eirin".

It was moments like this which made everything they worked for worth the years they had devoted their time to.

They had built each other up throughout their relationship despite their differing professions, supporting each other at their lowest and thriving at their highest.

Eirin pulled back slightly so that she could look down at Yukari after placing her hand on her cheek, "I love you".

"I doubt I will ever tire of hearing that" Yukari said, no masks, no facades, "I love you too".

They smiled at each other before they used the remainder of their evening to have dinner together for a change.

Both women kept the conversation away from work whilst they cuddled on the sofa, kissed softly under the visible stars shining in from the large windows, drank wine whilst laughing.

Even this much was working wonders to refreshing both Yukari and Eirin.

When they got into bed, Yukari took her place in Eirin's arms, her face against her chest while the doctor wrapped her arms around her back, securing her.

Sleep came easy tonight in the warmth of their bed, in the safety of their home as the gentle wind outside added a comforting ambience.

Eirin smiled as she brushed her wife's hair and kissed the top of her head before her eyes too, became heavy with sleep.

However, before she closed them, a flash of black hair and brown eyes appeared in her mind.

***

As they were scheduled to meet for lunch, Yukari was awaiting for Eirin to confirm again whilst in her office as she delegated some cases to the new recruits.

Okina was sat at Yukari's desk, making herself home while she watched the other blonde assign a particular case to someone she hadn't been expecting.

"Is that wise, Yukari?".

Yukari folded her arms over her chest, a glint in her violet eyes, "Is there a better way to bring Youmu up to speed than with a case like this?".

Okina shook her head, "Yuyuko is going to have your head if you mess with her apprentice".

"Possibly" Yukari smiled, "Not to worry, I will have Ran overseeing how she does".

That was reassuring to know since Youmu was still an inexperienced paralegal, so throwing her into a murky case like the one Yukari had done could be deemed cruel.

But it wouldn't be Yukari if she couldn't find amusement in it, such was in her anfractuous personality.

"Your wife's secretary is calling".

Yukari rolled her eyes at this, "Kaguya is her assistant, Okina. The word secretary has fallen into disrepair" she said before Okina handed her the cordless office phone and she answered, "Good afternoon, Kaguya. To what do I owe the pleasure of this call?".

Taking a seat on the chair opposite her desk, Yukari settled back while Kaguya relayed the message.

"The meeting with Zanmu has ran over" Kaguya said regrettably, "She hasn't been out of her office since the morning".

Yukari tapped the armrest, "She truly has no sense of moderation at times".

"You're one to talk" Okina grinned, earning a raised brow from Yukari.

"Are the blinds to her office opened?" Yukari then asked.

"The blinds are closed" Kaguya confirmed.

"Hm, she is angry".

Kaguya was curious about this, "I did hear her raise her voice twice. It was unusual and the first time I've heard Eirin like that".

"I can assure you it isn't a common sight, Kaguya, someone has screwed up significantly".

"Ah, she hasn't lost her temper with me..well, yet".

Yukari chuckled, "It won't happen at all. Eirin is not the type to take out her frustrations on others. The only ones who will feel the brunt of it are in her office with her".

Even though Kaguya had an idea that this would be the case, it was reassuring to hear from Yukari.

After a few more minutes of conversation, Yukari hung up and rested the phone under her chin, a contemplating look on her resplendent features.

Okina sat up, "What is that look for?".

"Just wondering about this current meeting she has with Zanmu. You have heard of her, yes?".

The blonde nodded, "Vaguely. Their reputation is hit and miss. Do you think they may have screwed Eirin over?".

"Not particularly. Eirin wouldn't have dealt with them if there was a chance of the happening. But she had been pushing herself lately, so her irate mood could impede the contract".

"Eirin is the most level headed woman we know, Yukari" Okina reminded, "She will know when to step back if need be".

It wasn't that Yukari doubted this, but at the end of the day, her wife was human and could slip up just like anyone else.

***

By the time the day was done, Eirin had exhausted all her patience and Kaguya could see the frayed strands around her as she placed the last file into the cabinet in the corner of the room.

She then locked it and walked back to her desk and threw her keys on top of the other folders, "That is the last of it, Kaguya".

Kaguya appeared frazzled herself, her white shirt ruffled and unbuttoned at the collar, tucked into the waistband of her skirt while her blazer remained on the back of the sofa on the other side of the room.

She wanted to say those forbidden words, if it was over, but didn't want to counteract it either.

So she exhaled and brushed her hair back, "I think it will be too soon if I see a person from their company again".

Eirin managed a wry smile, "Thankfully, we do not have to deal with them often. The asperity of their tactics to undermine knows no boundaries".

Kaguya could see that her boss was still frustrated and she wanted to comfort her, or offer words of comfort but it felt futile to say.

They all knew that had done as best as they could in dealing with this just as Christmas was approaching, and the only thing they all wanted now was a break.

Eirin sighed and turned towards the windows which overlooked the city, the moon high in the sky, so Kaguya decided to join her. It was a picturesque sight, especially with the docks nearby which opened out into the sea.

This was the first time that Kaguya had seen this sight as it was difficult to pay attention to anything else when they were busy.

The doctor glanced at Kaguya who was mesmerised and smiled, "There were a myriad of reasons as to why I wanted Ehime to be the base of the company. Close to shipping exports, ease of access, spacious" she listed, "However, beyond the business elements, it was this particular view which caught my eyes one evening when we were scouring a location".

"So you can be sentimental" Kaguya jested, "You really are full of surprises" she said before meeting Eirin's blue eyes, "And someone with a good eye. It's breath-taking seeing the moon like this".

"Indeed. After the rush of the last month, a moment like this certainly paints the bigger picture again".

"In terms of our insignificance in the grand scheme of the universe?".

Eirin had her hands on her desk whilst she thought about those words, "Existence is fleeting".

"True, but this is why we make the most out of the experiences we get to live throughout lives".

"Ever the optimist, Kaguya".

The woman grinned, "It has been a long day, you'll have to forgive the bounce in my step".

They shared a laugh as they looked at each other, both worn with fatigue but under the light of the moon, it was like they were brought to existence again.

Eirin noticed this about her assistant, how being in her presence felt like she was being revivified.

"Thank you, Kaguya" she said softly.

"I wish I could do more" Kaguya spoke up, placing her hand on Eirin's upper arm, the sleeves of her dress fitting well, "You're still too tense".

"Inevitable in our line of work" Eirin reminded.

The delicate hand on her arm remained in place, like it was grounding her and Eirin didn't want to part from the touch.

She hadn't quite masked her disappointment at the loss of contact as quickly as she would have preferred because Kaguya saw it.

Kaguya was perceptive enough to know what Eirin was feeling now, but she wondered if she would be crossing the line by doing this.

She stepped towards Eirin till she was in front of her and moved to embrace her, her arms going behind the taller woman's back.

"If I have overstepped my boundaries, please move me away" Kaguya said quietly, "I really couldn't ignore that look, Eirin".

Eirin still had her hands on the desk but this changed quickly when the warmth of the other woman enveloped her, her arms then moving behind Kaguya, the scent of her invading all of Eirin's senses.

It almost felt magnetic to curl her arms over Kaguya's waist till she could rest her head on her shoulder.

To push Kaguya away felt like an impossibility, even though Eirin was well aware that this shouldn't be happening at all.

But there was something serene about this, about their embrace near the window while under the moonlight.

She sighed and tightened her arms around Kaguya as Kaguya reciprocated and ran her hands up Eirin's back till she could reach her shoulders.

"That was quite something" Kaguya noted with a smile, "I quite literally felt the tension in your body leave. Well, considering how long you have been holding that in for, it shouldn't be a surprise".

"What can I say, you certainly have that calming effect" Eirin chuckled lowly, "Is this alright, Kaguya? I wish to stay like this for a little while".

"We can stay like this as long as you need to. Truthfully, it's just as relieving for me, but I'm sure you have already noticed".

The doctor had indeed felt the way Kaguya had almost melted in her arms.

She couldn't help but to run a hand through Kaguya's long hair, feeling the soft strands cascade through her fingers.

"Beautiful" she mused, unable to stop herself from doing it again.

Kaguya reacted to the touch and felt a heat linger on the nape of her neck at the touch and it was what woke her up.

This shouldn't be a feeling that she should be enjoying like so.

Kaguya willed herself to move back slightly when Eirin also removed her hold but kept her hands around her.

Blue eyes looked down into brown, the draw to each other almost second nature and they couldn't help the need to just remain like this.

Eirin smiled as she fixed Kaguya's hair, hoping her heartbeat couldn't be felt, or was it Kaguya's she was feeling?

"I appreciate the help, Kaguya".

"It is what I am here for".

Perhaps saying these things to each other would have been the norm, but the tone was a tad too intimate, a voice used for lover's whom had just risen after a passionate night.

A voice Eirin used with Yukari.

It shook away the haze as she finally released Kaguya, "I should drop you off now" she said with a soft look, "We can discuss your upcoming days off too".

"Yes, that's..we should go".

Kaguya stepped back, felt the ghost of Eirin's hands on her and turned away, hoping that her face wasn't as feverish as she was feeling.

The two could only chalk this moment down to the intensity of the last few weeks; it was simply a culmination of being in close contact, of relying on each other.

However, neither could dispel the feeling of that embrace, nor the ease they experienced in the quietness of the office when it was just the two of them.

Only the moon bore witness to the convoluted path which awaited Kaguya and Eirin.

Chapter 3: Match To A Flame

Chapter Text

One evening during the end of November, Kaguya received a call from Eirin asking for a favour.

She was done with work for the day and was hanging out with Reimu and Alice, the three watching a film in the comforts of the living area.

Kaguya's phone rang on the table and the sight of Eirin's name had her reaching immediately, "It's my boss" she said, standing up after removing Alice's legs from her lap.

Reimu and Alice were cuddling at the other end of the sofa, the latter in front as Reimu stretched out.

"Why is she calling at this time?" the brunette asked, annoyed, "You're off the clock".

Alice smiled, "The situation is different for personal assistants of pharmaceutical moguls".

"See, Reimu, Alice is your brain too" she teased, dodging the cushion to her head, "Won't be long!" she laughed and headed to her room.

Reimu wound her arms around Alice's waist and buried her face against her shoulder, "Its been a happening a lot, Alice. She barely gets a break these day. She's at the office till like 9 most days".

Running her hand through Reimu's hair, Alice answered, "I do agree, but she seems happy to be doing so".

"Well, a job like this will get her on the map for sure".

"Her boss seems pleasant from what Kaguya has divulged" Alice turned slightly, "That in itself is quite rare. You know as well as I do that Kaguya will act if it gets too stressful".

Reimu hummed and kissed the palm on her face, "Yeah, you're right. I wonder what her boss wants now though".

"Is that all you are wondering right now, Reimu? Because your left hand certainly seems to be wandering".

The brunette grinned as Alice chuckled, though that sound was short lived when Reimu snuck her fingers over her lover's ribs, moving to the centre of her abdomen before sliding further up.

"What can I say, you're a distraction".

Alice grabbed Reimu's wrist while she let her do what she wanted, her own lips kissing the side of Reimu's neck.

She whispered softly, "Shall we turn in for the night?".

Reimu definitely had that in mind but she wasn't in a rush to halt this process and she knew that Alice was completely aware of it.

In her room, Kaguya sat down at her desk while Eirin relayed what was happening.

"My sincerest apologies for calling you so abruptly, Kaguya, more so considering the day we had".

Kaguya smiled, "It's okay, I really don't mind. This is part of the job, right?".

"Well, partially. Which is why if you decline, it is understandable too".

Eirin then went on to explain how she must go to a charity gala in Tokyo tonight and Yukari could not to attend due to work commitments.

"I would be grateful if you can attend the event with me, Kaguya. The charitable side is much more relaxed so you will not be working per se. You will be my plus one. Would that be feasible?".

A gala in Tokyo.

Kaguya couldn't deny that the idea of attending such a lavish event had certainly intrigued her. She was also flattered that Eirin had called her rather than someone else, and she knew Eirin wasn't lacking in options even if she was her assistant.

She glanced outside to the night sky and agreed to go for the sake of not letting her boss down.

"I'd love to, Eirin, thank you for inviting me".

She heard Eirin's relieved tone, "Thank you for accepting on such short notice".

"Ah, what should I wear? Honestly, I've never been to an event like this before" Kaguya revealed, "Well, not as grandiose, should I say".

"Please leave that to me".

All Kaguya had to do was actually attend as Eirin had clearly taken care of all the details, so it was less of a burden in general, leaving her to wait till Eirin contacted her again.

When Kaguya returned to the living area, Reimu and Alice looked at her, the blonde speaking up, "Kaguya, is everything okay?".

The woman grinned, "I guess I'm going to a gala tonight".

"Wait, what?".

Kaguya looked between the two with a mischievous smirk, "Also, didn't we have a rule about no sex on the couch?".

Reimu frowned, "We didn't".

Alice and Reimu managed to disentangle themselves from each other as Kaguya relayed what Eirin had said after teasing them a tad more.

While Reimu seemed hesitant about this abrupt invite, Kaguya reassured her that it was strictly professional.

Eirin had then sent a private car for Kaguya, along with an beautiful evening outfit for her to wear so Alice did her hair and make up for her.

The black gown which flowed to the ground and shawl complimented Kaguya remarkably well, especially with her hair curled slightly, as did the black heels and clutch bag which accommodated the ensemble.

Reimu whistled as she leaned on the door frame, "Your boss has good taste, I'll give her that".

"I believe it was her wife who chose it" Kaguya laughed, "But they're both always so well dressed so I wouldn't be surprised if Eirin had a say in it".

"Doesn't she look beautiful?" Alice smiled, securing the black shawl over Kaguya's shoulders, "There we go".

"Thank you so much, Alice" Kaguya hugged her friend, "If you get tired of doll making, you would do well in dolling people up".

The blonde chuckled, as did Reimu before she checked the time, "This do is in Tokyo hotel, right?".

"Yes, the hotel is quite renowned".

Alice reacted to this as she placed her make up away when Kaguya revealed the name.

"They certainly spared no expenses".

"Have you heard of it, Alice?".

The blonde nodded at Reimu's query, "Lavish would be an understatement".

Kaguya fixed her bracelet as she took in a deep breath, "Is that so? Sounds like a night of petting egos" she smirked.

"Yeah, including your boss's" Reimu shot back.

After a few reassurances to let them know whether Kaguya would need a lift home, or if she was staying by the end of the event, Alice and Reimu led her to the car and watched her go.

Kaguya could feel the excitement as the warmth of the car kept her comfortable and Eirin had called to make sure she was okay.

She had no idea what was in store but Kaguya was looking forward to it.

***

When Kaguya arrived at the gala, she was blown away by the elegant venue after she was escorted in by the driver.

Troves of people were roaming in the grand hotel hall where the champagne was flowing freely, hors d'oeuvres were being transported around by waitresses and waiters while a live orchestra was providing a classical ambience.

Kaguya couldn't help but to scoff at the irony of this being a charity event.

While she hadn't attended a gala like this, she had attended her fair share of events and parties, but nothing compared to what she was seeing now.

She couldn't deny that she felt a little overwhelmed and out of place since she was left alone, but not for too long.

Like parting a crowd, Eirin walked towards her, looking absolutely resplendent in a black suit jacket and pants ensemble. The outfit was a fitted design with a lapel and V-neck collar, the plunge exposing the expanse of Eirin's chest tastefully, teasing the swell of it as her stilettos added a smidge to her already tall stature.

With her silver hair tied up in a high ponytail and fringe still parted, those eyes were highlighted further.

Kaguya deemed the word goddess quite apropos.

"Good evening, Kaguya, I hope the journey here was comfortable?" she smiled, offering a glass of champagne to her and collecting one for herself, "Are the clothes to your liking?".

Kaguya managed to reply, "Everything is perfect. I can't say that this happens often so it was definitely enjoyable" she grinned.

"Well, it is the least I can do for calling you out on such short notice" Eirin replied, giving her assistant a quick look over, "You look beautiful, Kaguya".

And here Kaguya was thinking she would have to be hold her own tongue when it came to wanting to compliment Eirin.

The doctor extended her hand, "Shall we?".

Kaguya didn't seem to hesitate as she was led into Eirin's world of power and hierarchy, of glitz and glamour behind the scenes.

Throughout the evening, Eirin revealed a playful, charming side to Kaguya that she didn't get to see in the office.

She was smiling more, bringing out her eyes as she shared anecdotes, "Suffice to say, there were certain trials that were questionable so we refrained from becoming involved".

"Is it possible for a pharmaceutical company CEO to keep her hands clean?" a man asked, lips curled in an unpleasant way, "You have to be cruel to climb the ladder".

"Indeed" another woman said, pompous and overbearing, "As Eirin's assistant, that is the advice you must heed".

The conversation was evidently making Kaguya uncomfortable so Eirin went into business mode.

"Not everyone needs to rely on underhanded tactics to succeed" she said smoothly, "Kaguya's innovative mind and penchant for quick thinking is invaluable, and ethical. Concepts that neither of you have ever been familiar with".

With a sharp smile, Eirin placed her hand on the small of Kaguya's back and guided her away, offering an apology in her ear.

"Are you alright, Kaguya? Unfortunately, some vultures will always makes themselves present".

"Honestly, I've heard and seen worse" Kaguya managed to laugh softly, feeling safe with Eirin so close to her, "Also, thank you for vouching for me".

"I meant every word. In a few months, you have become integral to my company, and more than that, your presence has been refreshing".

Kaguya looked up into blue eyes,

"How so?".

"Majority of those I associate with have had it all from the moment they were born. They are missing something humane, something honest" she said sincerely, "I see that with you, and my wife. It reminds me to exist beyond my work. So, tonight, please let me thank you".

Kaguya was taken aback by the words, by Eirin's entire demeanour, relishing in these new sides to her boss.

So she relaxed and let Eirin guide her, effortlessly almost.

Eirin was flirtatious even, lightly touching her hand, sliding her arm around Kaguya's shoulder and complimenting Kaguya in front of her business associates.

"This is Houraisan Kaguya" she introduced to a group of the more sane individuals whom greeted Kaguya warmly, "I agree, she is remarkably beautiful, isn't she?"

Kaguya knew that she shouldn’t read too heavily into Eirin's flirtation, because Eirin was married and they worked together, but it was difficult not to get swept up in her charisma even through a furtive glance.

And as the night went on and the alcohol settled, Kaguya found herself seeking more of her boss.

***

When the gala concluded, Eirin insisted that they retire to the hotel room they’ve reserved upstairs until they’ve sobered up some.

Kaguya agreed to stay so the pair take the elevator up to a suite, the likes of which Kaguya has only seen on luxury blogs and in travel magazines.

Eirin smiled at Kaguya's contemplative expression as she leaned back, her arms resting on the railing.

"Ostentatious, is it not?".

"I guess that's one word for it" Kaguya replied, eyes on her boss, "I've noticed that you tend to cancel attending these events and parties unless it's a charity one".

"Astute as ever" Eirin chuckled, "Seeing it for yourself first hand, you can see that it is essentially walking into a pit of snakes. I won't deny the barbarity of the pharmaceutical world, and I myself am not free from questionable actions, Kaguya".

"Maybe, but you're trying to do things differently, ethically. I can't say the same for most of the people in that room".

Besides, it wasn't as if Kaguya was foolish enough to believe that the world functioned in a way where there wasn't a constant grab for power.

"I like that about you" she then added.

Eirin smiled, "The sentiments are mutual" she said as the door opened, "Are you okay to walk?".

"If I said no, would you princess carry me into the room?" the younger woman flirted back.

"A princess carry would certainly befit someone like you".

The duo grinned at each other, minds loose as the residual of the alcohol lowered their inhibitions whilst they walked to Eirin's room.

Kaguya was in awe as she sat down on the plush bed, her heels being kicked off, "And the luxury continues" she jested, "A woman could get used to this".

Eirin smiled and retrieved a bottle of water from the mini bar and handed it to Kaguya, "Here, drink up".

"Yes, ma'am" Kaguya sassed, unscrewing the cap as Eirin chuckled.

The water was ice cold and it felt refreshing as it rushed down her throat, her head still fuzzy whilst she watched Eirin take a seat on the sofa near the floor to ceiling windows.

She appeared at ease, like the weight of her profession wasn't resting on those shoulders and Kaguya couldn't look away, staring in a way that was far from platonic. Despite the sips of water, the haze in her mind was not lifting, and it wouldn't, not until she was closer to her.

Eirin rested back and checked the time on her watch, aware of brown eyes on her and just knowing that Kaguya was looking at her so intently was stirring something within her.

This wasn't new territory for someone who constantly had awestruck eyes on her, revering her.

But something felt different when it came to Kaguya.

Eirin thrived off of being on the receiving end of Kaguya's gaze which was dangerous.

A danger which would be amplified.

Standing up, Kaguya walked to Eirin, "Why did you sit all the way over here, Eirin? There's plenty of room on the bed".

Eirin may have been drunk, but she wasn't blind.

Kaguya's appeal was sneaking it's way to her, had been all night.

And now Kaguya was stood in front of her,  between her legs with a hand on her hip and the other drinking from the bottle, a slither of water running down the side of her mouth.

Eirin felt like she was fighting a losing battle.

"Kaguya..".

"Hm?" the woman smiled, looking down into darkening blue eyes, "Did you need something?".

Eirin lifted her thumb and wiped the trail of water away from Kaguya's lip and chin, holding her in place, their faces closer than should be acceptable.

But they were fuelled by a mutual attraction and alcohol, by desire and heat.

So Eirin made a bold move on Kaguya, crossing professional and marital lines.

With a hand on Kaguya's hip and the other still under her chin, Eirin urged Kaguya towards her.

Kaguya fell onto Eirin's lap as their lips met, the taste of alcohol being exchanged on their tongues as the moonlight streamed in from the windows behind them.

Lost to the sensation of the woman straddled on top of her, all that registered in Eirin's mind was getting Kaguya undressed and under her.

Kaguya felt Eirin's left hand skim over her back when she pulled the straps of the evening gown down, the ring on Eirin's finger hot and cold at the same time.

But she couldn't stop either when she felt Eirin kiss her neck, tongue swiping up while her own hands went the doctor's suit jacket, the buttons coming undone.

She pulled it down Eirin's shoulders, pleasantly surprised to feel Eirin's skin immediately as she just had a loose black blouse on, such was the intended style of the jacket. That soon followed when Kaguya dragged it down over Eirin's body, basking in the sight under her.

"Eirin" she called out, biting her own lip when Eirin's mouth decorated the entirety of her neck, kissing over every inch of skin.

"Should I stop?".

Yes.

That should have been Kaguya's answer instead of, "No".

Her own hands had curled around Eirin's back, holding on while her mind became heavy because of the mouth beneath her chin and tongue, swiping over the column of her throat.

Eirin sat back as her eyes met Kaguya's.

It was an impossible task to stop now.

A firm tug on the evening gown had it fall down her body, revealing all and Eirin felt her senses sharpen at the sight of Kaguya on her while she held her waist.

"You're staring" Kaguya smirked.

"How could I not?" Eirin answered and positioned her hand between Kaguya's parted thighs, moving aside the satin fabric of her underwear, "Come here".

She then kissed Kaguya, to capture that moan in her mouth when she pushed her finger forward, feeling the heat surround her immediately.

Kaguya winced into Eirin's mouth and moved, matching the slow pace as the back of mind tried to remind her of what exactly was happening now.

She was having sex with her boss, her married boss.

But it was too late to stop now, too late to count the number of rules they were breaking as their clandestine endeavors continued into the night.

***

When morning broke through, a phone alarm coming from the bedside table stirred Kaguya awake, the warmth of the body against her blocking out the winter cold when an arm went over her to reach the phone.

It was quickly silenced and the arm snuck beneath the sheets again and around her hips.

The haze of the night before was slowing lifting while Kaguya opened her eyes to see silver hair behind a shoulder.

She reached out and ran her fingers over Eirin's chest, the fullness of them pressed over her own.

"Good morning".

The low voice came from above her as a hand went into her hair, the other around her body beneath the sheets and on her hip.

Kaguya couldn't recall the last time she had woken up to such comfort.

"Good morning" she replied, yawning, "What time is it?".

"A little past 6" Eirin replied, "Go back to sleep, Kaguya, I will wake you up in an hour".

They had only fallen asleep two hours ago.

A headache was forming at the base of Kaguya's skull as the events of their night came back to her, what they had done.

It made her move back and sit up despite feeling nauseated, "Oh.." she muttered, looking at Eirin's naked form and then her own, "I should leave. This shouldn't have happened..".

She felt guilty, knowing that Eirin is married, but the attraction between them could no longer be ignored and their night had blended the worlds together.

What confounded Kaguya more was how she couldn't read Eirin, her blue eyes up to the ceiling and a hand over her head.

"Rushing out now won't be good for either of us".

"Eirin, I-".

Before she could apologise, Eirin slowly sat up and reached for Kaguya, placing a hand on the side of her neck, leaning in to kiss her.

It can't happen again

They both were aware of this and the silent understanding passed between them; this was the last time.

Kaguya wrapped her arms behind the other woman's shoulders while she was lowered back down onto the bed.

Eirin laced her fingers with Kaguya's and kept them down on the pillow, either side of her head whilst she settled between Kaguya's thighs which parted for her.

As long as they were confined in this room, whatever happened between them would remain as such, so they used this facetious justification to continue from the night before

It will not happen again.

Kaguya arched her back at the feeling of Eirin on her, moving her hips over her own, the pace slow and firm, ensuring that every press could be felt.

It cannot happen again.

Her legs locked behind Eirin's lower spine as her hips thrust up to meet Eirin's, the two intertwined in such a way that nothing could escape between them.

Aches and discomfort had no room here, not as they made use of this last act of intimacy, covering and coating each other while their names spilled from their mouths.

Kaguya looked up into Eirin's eyes whilst her fingers went into her hair, their breathing melding as the force of their undoing reached a culmination.

Neither looked away.

Only when the sun started to rise did they stop.

They got dressed, presentable after showering and changing into their normal attire.

Kaguya was relieved that she had taken Alice's advice to pack a spare change of clothes and leave it in the car should a need arise for it.

And there would be no need for this to become a habit.

It must not happen again.

***

Eirin had headed straight to work after driving Kaguya back home, giving her the day off despite Kaguya insisting she was fine

But the doctor couldn't risk it and she could read Kaguya well, noting the distraction mentally, as well as the physical pain.

The sex hadn't been a calm endeavour and Kaguya was bearing the brunt of it, especially since Eirin was focused on satisfying her.

Each time the word more exited Kaguya's lips, Eirin delivered

In hindsight, restricting Kaguya from touching her too much worked in Eirin's favour when she returned home that evening to her wife.

She walked in, the lights of their home dimmed as she made her way to the kitchen to get something to drink, despite already feeling the residual of the alcohol consumption from the night before.

Retrieving a wine glass, she poured in wine and sipped it whilst hearing Yukari step into the kitchen.

Her wife was in a robe so she must have been in bed which made sense given the time.

She smiled and opened her arms when Yukari reached for her, "Did I wake you?" she whispered against the blonde's neck since her hair was up in a loose bun.

"I wish you did" Yukari commented and pulled back, her hands on her wife's shoulders, "How was the gala?".

"It went well, Yukari. I would have preferred it if you were there with me".

Yukari chuckled, "As far as replacements go, Kaguya would certainly fill my shoes well so I hope you were not too bored".

The doctor kept her features neutral, "Thankfully not. It is as you said, Kaguya handled it very well".

"Did she enjoy herself?" Yukari hummed, kissing the doctor's jaw.

Eirin closed her eyes, saw the reel of the two of them together while Yukari's hands went to the sash of her own purple robe.

"I believe she did".

Keeping her answers simple would be the best course of action, though there would be no need to ponder too much on covering it up when Yukari let her robe fall to the kitchen floor.

Eirin shuddered as she ran her hands over her wife's nude body and pulled her in before turning her around to lift her onto the counter, resuming their kiss.

"I missed you" Yukari moaned, pushing Eirin's coat down her shoulders, "I'm sure you can tell".

Eirin's fingertips were damp and she had only touched Yukari's thighs to separate them.

The blonde's smirk over her lips fuelled Eirin further and she kissed her once more before sinking down till she could place Yukari's legs over her shoulders.

Yukari tipped her head back against the wall while her hands went behind Eirin's head, her mouth parted and skin flushed.

In actuality, there had been no reason for Eirin to stray because she was happy with her marriage to Yukari.

Not many could say they had the chance to marry their university love.

So Eirin deduced that whatever had happened with Kaguya was purely alcohol induced and a temporary infatuation.

It was a one night stand and nothing more, one which wouldn't occur again.

So there was no need to reveal anything since Eirin had no intention of leaving her wife, and clearly Kaguya also regretted what had happened.

***

When Kaguya had been dropped off, she hadn't left her room for the day, giving Reimu a partial truth that she had drunk too much.

So when Reimu returned home after work that day, she was greatly concerned that Kaguya still hadn't left her room.

She hadn't eaten anything and hadn't responded to Alice's messages so it was understandable for the duo to be worried as much as they were.

In the apartment kitchen, Alice was in the midst of cooking while Reimu went into Kaguya's room, the curtains still draw so the room was blanketed in darkness apart from the light coming from the hallway.

At least Kaguya was awake when she sat down next to her on the bed, brushing Kaguya's hair back to look at her.

"You seriously overdid it last night, huh".

Kaguya closed her eyes and hugged her pillow to her chest, unable to keep the tumultuous feelings inside.

It was perfectly reasonable as to what Eirin had said, what she herself had said; that they couldn't happen again.

But it hurt Kaguya more than she had expected because she could not deny that the night together had opened her eyes to something, something she had seen forming in the last few months.

She liked Eirin.

It hadn't just been drunken sex for her.

And Kaguya knew from the way that Eirin touched her that there was something more for her too.

She couldn't get Eirin out of her mind, an avowal she could no longer refute.

Her body felt an emptiness, her hands felt the ghostly sensation of Eirin's, the blue eyes she couldn't escape followed her into her dreams.

How did she let this happen?

Reimu was alarmed when she saw tears down Kaguya's face just as Alice came into the room with a tray of food.

"Kaguya?!".

The blonde quickly crouched down in front of the bed, "It's going to be alright, Kaguya, whatever has happened, we will be there for you".

Kaguya's voice was barely above a whisper when she spoke up, raspy because how much she had used it the previous night.

Because of how Eirin made her feel.

"I messed up".

After Kaguya had revealed what had happened with Eirin, she was so enervated from crying that she fell asleep again.

Alice and Reimu remained with her for a while before they left the room.

The brunette went to her phone on the couch, muttering profanities under her breath.

"Reimu".

"No, she isn't going to get away with this" Reimu seethed, "There are fucking boundaries you don't cross".

Alice grabbed her lover's wrist and carefully pried the phone away from her, "I know you are angry, I am too. But we need to consider several things".

"Like what?".

"What happened between Kaguya and Eirin was consensual despite being drunk, Kaguya was firm about this".

Reimu scowled, "Fine, no police. Aya works for the newspaper and I bet she could get this out before tomorrow. There goes Eirin's career and her marriage".

"As well as Kaguya's reputation".

Alice moved Reimu to the couch, making her sit down as she sat next to her and kept her arms around her lover.

Not being able to forfend Kaguya in any way was perplexing for Reimu.

"Damn it..".

"I know" Alice smiled sadly, "But the fact is that what happened was mutual. The biggest issues here are of course, Eirin's marriage, her being Kaguya's boss and.."

"And?".

"Kaguya having feelings for Eirin".

Chapter 4: Magnetism

Chapter Text

When Kaguya returned for her first day back after her break, fraught would be the only way to describe the atmosphere.

She and Eirin were now too painfully aware of each other.

The edacious nature of how they took from each other that night loitered around them like a secret on the cusp of being exposed.

In one of the meeting rooms, Eirin was in the midst of a presentation in regards to the year ahead. Kaguya was stood at the front and near the board, preparing the folders that the team would need.

There were several new faces in the room too.

"Kaguya, can you hand the files out, please?".

"Yes" Kaguya simply replied and tried to keep her tone and expression nonchalant as she went around the table and placed the folders down, "What about the quarterly results for last year?".

Eirin had forgotten about those and Kaguya saw it so she quickly managed to cover for her.

"Though you did mention to attach it to the addendum in the next packet".

"Yes, that would be beneficial" Eirin replied and held Kaguya's gaze, "Thank you".

The meeting went on as Kaguya continued to do what she needed to do when of the new employees called out to her.

"My apologies, Kaguya, where are these labs situated?".

Kaguya walked around to the woman with silver hair and brown eyes, a gentle and unassuming smile on her lips.

"Let's see" she smiled and leaned closer to look at what the woman was pointing at, recognising the abbreviations, "Those are in the Ultramarine Labs. Once the tour is done, you'll have a better idea so don't worry about it now".

"I see, thank you so much" the woman answered, "It's great to have such on the go support".

"Part of the job" Kaguya grinned and stood back up.

"I look forward to working with you, Kaguya. My name is Keine, I'll be in your care".

"Likewise, Keine" the assistant beamed before heading to Eirin's side when she noticed the woman watching her.

Keine followed Kaguya with her eyes before checking the notes on her tablet while she went through the introductory information.

She had done her research on her new workplace and was looking forward to beginning as a research assistant and so far, the personnel seemed likeable.

Still, Keine knew that there was a lot on the line so she hoped to succeed while she was here.

Eirin was sat at the head of the table as Kaguya returned to her seat next to her, the two making brief eye contact when the meeting drew to an end and Eirin dismissed them.

Kaguya remained seated, not knowing where to look as she felt Eirin's eyes on her, "Kaguya?".

"Yes?" the woman managed.

"Are you okay?".

It wasn't a question Kaguya was expecting, the softness in those blue eyes startling her too.

"In terms of-".

"What happened. While in the presence of others, your professionalism is expected, but..we also need to discuss that night".

"What is there to discuss? We slept together. You are my boss. You are married".

"Kaguya" Eirin said firmly, "Breath".

Kaguya felt a hand take hers under the table so she clutched on tightly as she composed herself while the overwrought apprehension subsumed her. Thankfully, the floor was clear so nobody was there to witness the scene but Eirin knew that it was better to have this conversation in her office.

"Let me tell you this" she spoke up, "This will not affect your job, there will be no attempt for me to lose sight of my authority again, Kaguya. Let's get through today and then we can go on from there. Is that okay?".

Kaguya had steadied her breathing so Eirin let go of her hand as she nodded in agreement.

"I know what happened was something we both decided, Eirin".

"Then we will deal with it as such".

***

For the most part, Eirin and Kaguya were able to work together without much of a hitch, and it helped that they worked away from the eyes of others.

Though that would have been the case before they slept together.

Now, Kaguya took any opportunity to go to the lower floors whenever possible, whether it was to pass messages, or take care of organising team meetings to match with Eirin's.

She was on one of these errands when she heard a name call out for her.

"Kaguya".

The woman turned, her hands filled with two boxes as she smiled, "Hey, Keine".

"Let me help you with one of these".

"How chivalrous" Kaguya quipped, grateful for the help, "I'm not taking you away from anything am I?".

The taller woman shook her head, "We were in the midst of collecting samples so a break away from that would be nice".

"Must be fun watching things grow" Kaguya laughed, "Have you gotten used to everything yet?".

"Getting there" Keine replied, her silver hair draped over one shoulder, the dark blue of her shirt enhancing the shade, "Your help has been pivotal, of course. I feel fortunate for all the time you have spent to teach me despite your own responsibilities. I can't imagine it is easy being Yagokoro's assist and the workload which comes along with it".

Kaguya bit her lip as they turned a corner, trying to keep her boss out of her mind whilst trying to give a normal answer.

"I think I am used to it now" she said, "It helps that she is more than efficient in managing everything effectively which makes my life easier. Though that is supposed to be my job" she chuckled.

"That is good to know" Keine smiled while Kaguya led her into the storage room, "I'll place this down here, Kaguya?".

"Please" she answered and placed her box over it, "You didn't have to go out of your way like this for me".

Keine tucked her hair behind her glasses as she looked at Kaguya, "I wanted to. Actually, I was wondering if you might be free this weekend?".

"Oh? What did you have in mind?".

Keine's smile was bashful and Kaguya found it endearing.

The woman really was a gentle soul and she enjoyed spending time with her, even when they were working.

"Perhaps we can get dinner?".

Kaguya was surprised by this in a way, because Keine was clearly asking her out and she wanted to tease the woman.

She raised a brow, "Like on a date?".

"Ah, well.." Keine blushed and toyed with her watch, not meeting Kaguya's eyes but answering, "Yes, a date".

"You're so cute" Kaguya thought to herself, "I'd like that too, Keine".

The soft brown eyes widened in surprise, "Really?".

"Of course" Kaguya reassured, "I'm looking forward to it".

Keine was visibly relieved, "Wonderful. I will text you the details".

They spoke a bit more before Keine left and Kaguya started sorting the box of documents out.

Maybe this would be good for her, to move on from Eirin.

***

The date between Keine and Kaguya went remarkably well, the two learning more about each other.

Over dinner, Kaguya had learned that Keine was a historian until recently when she had decided to switch field's and a friend had managed to recommend her to Eientei directly.

Keine was born and raised in Ehime so she was more familiar with the ins and outs of the city.

"Then I hope I can get a personal tour guide to the places I don't know" Kaguya smiled.

"I wouldn't mind that at all, Kaguya" Keine replied easily as the romantic ambiance of the restaurant settled between them, "Not just as a repayment for helping me at Eientei, but because I really enjoy your company".

The earnest words captivated Kaguya more than she would have expected, as did the brown eyes looking at her and only her.

With Keine, there was nobody else that Kaguya would have to worry about and this was a reminder as to why it was better to leave what had happened with Eirin behind.

As the night went on, Kaguya was letting some of her guard down with Keine, laughing freely and enjoying the way they would go back and forth on some matters.

It felt different from Eirin, and perhaps that was a positive thing.

The steadiness after the New Year continued, as did Keine and Kaguya's relationship.

Keine was nothing short of attentive and beautiful, an excellent conversationalist, someone Kaguya felt like she could really delve into regardless of what they were discussing.

As promised, Keine did show many new locations in Ehime that Kaguya wouldn't have known existed, and that included taking her to the myriad of festivals.

On a frigid February evening, the two were stood by the seafront where such a celebration was going on, the fireworks in the sky illuminating everything.

While Kaguya was focused in awe at the fireworks, Keine couldn't take her eyes off of Kaguya.

"How beautiful" Kaguya commented, her shoulders pressed to Keine's.

Keine couldn't agree more as she took Kaguya's hand in hers, their fingers lacing together, warming them up.

Kaguya's eyes went up to Keine to see her smile, her silver hair appearing blue at the ends under the lights in the sky.

"Thank you for bringing me here, Keine".

The woman squeezed Kaguya's hand lightly, "You're welcome. I am pleased that you are enjoying yourself with me".

With the wind whirling between them, it was as if nature itself was trying to bring the two women together.

The distance would be closed between them as the days went by, their dates and meetings at work giving them all the time they needed.

With Kaguya avoiding Eirin outside of work matters, she threw herself into every other distraction there was. But to call Keine just a distraction was incorrect because she was so much more to Kaguya.

So it felt inevitable when they finally kissed one night after Keine had walked Kaguya up to her apartment. They were hand in hand, talking and smiling as they arrived up to the second floor, their steps slow as they reached Kaguya's home.

In the midst of their hug, their eyes strayed from lips to lips.

When Kaguya leaned up, Keine moved her face down.

Their arms remained tightly around each other whilst their lips moved softly, testing and teasing till they found a rhythm which would leave them breathless.

That goodnight was prolonged for as long as it could be.

Keine smiled over Kaguya's lips, "I should leave".

"I guess" Kaguya said with a grin, her hands in Keine's hair, "Or you could keep kissing me?".

"Who am I to argue with such a wise idea".

And so, their lips met again in the silence of the hallway, fulfilling and feeling the flourishing emotions between them.

***

Up until then, Eirin was unaware of Keine and Kaguya's relationship.

Kaguya was going out of her way to put as much distance between them as possible which is exactly what Eirin herself had dictated.

So why was it that it bothered her?

Heading towards one of the offices on the second floor, Eirin was checking over some details on her phone whilst she said her fair share of greetings to passing employees.

She had a bit of downtime between her next meeting and had instructed Kaguya that she wouldn't be required in the office for a hour, so she assumed that the woman might have gone to the cafeteria with Yorihime and Toyohime whom she had befriended.

So Eirin was hit in an unexpected surprise when she turned the corner, her eyes catching the sight of two figures pressed against the wall.

Eirin stopped and moved her foot back till she was half hidden by the wall, "Kaguya..".

The name was whispered and laced with something akin to hurt.

Eirin's hand gripped the wall as she recognised the woman on Kaguya with her arms around her waist and lips over her own.

Why Keine out of all people?

The doctor couldn't look away when Kaguya's giggle floated over to her when Keine moved her lips to her ear and her left hand had a firm grip on Kaguya's hip, her skirt being lifted slightly.

Eirin was in two mind about what to do, but more than that, she didn't know why she was feeling this surge of emotion at seeing Kaguya in the arms of another woman.

Why did she feel angry?

She was married to a woman she loved and would do anything for, a love that was far from fugacious.

It was reprehensible enough that she had already cheated on Yukari, so being jealous of Kaguya with someone else seemed absurd.

But it was dawning on Eirin what had happened, why she had grown so attached to Kaguya and it was dangerous.

Something she would halt however possible.

She was in love with Yukari, nobody else.

So Eirin dragged herself away from the sweltering scene and tried to keep her composure when the hour was up.

But having Kaguya so close to her and seeing the residual of Keine's affection was already wearing her down.

"We can push the meeting with the designers to next Monday".

Kaguya looked at her tablet, "They have specified-".

"I am not interested in their excuses".

Eirin had her back to Kaguya as she checked some folders, aware of Kaguya stood near her desk.

"I understand. I will try to negotiate the dates".

Eirin felt the sullen tone and turned around to meet Kaguya's eyes as she walked next to her, "Good. Also, please keep your personal encounters away from the building".

"Personal encounters?".

Before she could stop herself, Eirin moved Kaguya's hair back to reveal the small bruise at the side of Kaguya's neck. Her fingers brushed the skin softly but Kaguya moved Eirin's hand away, irritation flashing in her eyes.

"I do not need rumours spreading and disturbing my staff".

"Like us sleeping together?".

Eirin's jaw clenched and Kaguya wouldn't be surprised if Eirin fired her there and then.

However, Eirin merely went to collect her coat, "I'll be leaving for an hour. Redirect my calls".

She opened the door and left Kaguya, her heels sharp against the floor as it matched the pace of Kaguya's heartbeat.

The woman took in a deep breath and placed her hand over where Eirin had touched her.

It felt like she had been burned.

Making her want more.

***

Perhaps Kaguya had underestimated Eirin's hold on her.

After that interaction, thoughts of Eirin bombarded her brain without permission, reel after reel, snapshot after snapshot.

Even when she was thinking about Keine in her dream, the imagery would morph into Eirin.

Kaguya moved in her bed as the dream consisting of her and Keine kept being played out, her subconscious wanting to take it further than they had in reality.

A hand rested on her cheek, making her look up into similar brown eyes and Kaguya felt breathless, like the fingertips between her thighs were stealing each attempt.

Kaguya.

The softness in that voice made Kaguya's hands reach out, especially when she felt Keine dip the edge of her fingertip between her lower lips, brushing it up lightly.

Is this what you want?

Kaguya could only whimper in response, moving her hips upwards but Keine didn't let her get the contact she desired.

The woman smiled, all coy and kittenish while moving her mouth to the curve of Kaguya's lips.

Even when you are with her, you cannot stop thinking about me.

The change in the voice had Kaguya pushing Keine up by the shoulders and rather than meeting brown eyes, she stared into blue.

Eirin's silver hair had replaced Keine's, spilling over her shoulders while her left hand moved down to Kaguya's jaw.

Before Kaguya could call out Eirin's name, she felt Eirin move inside her, the length of her finger overtaking everything, pushing through, making her moan.

Her nails clamped down onto Eirin's shoulders while her eyes remained wide and opened.

The Eirin of her dreams appeared as angry as the one she had seen that day, the furrow between her brows deep and the sharpness of her eyes piercing.

I cannot stop thinking about you.

Kaguya shook her head, her teeth bruising her own lips while Eirin started to swirl her finger, the heat exuding with each thrust.

I want you.

It couldn't be true, Kaguya whispered it and grabbed Eirin's wrist to stop her.

Eirin was with Yukari, she was her wife.

What happened between them was a mistake.

An unforgivable assignation.

Eirin ran her thumb over Kaguya's throat till she could move her face to the side before  bringing her mouth down beneath her jaw, running her lips over the flushed skin.

I want you, Kaguya.

Before Eirin could do anything more, Kaguya pushed her away, stopping the procession of the dream.

When she graced the reality of her bedroom, she sat up and tried to catch her breath whilst her body felt like it was feverish.

"What was that about?" Kaguya muttered and brought a hand to her face, "Why am I thinking about you?".

She took in a deep breath and searched for her robe before getting out of bed, noticing that her legs were weak.

Reaching over for her phone, the woman checked the time to see that it was a little past 2 AM before checking her messages which included a goodnight message from Keine which made her smile.

A little below that was a message from Eirin, one she had ignored.

I'm sorry, Kaguya

***

On a rare evening where they were both relatively free, Eirin and Yukari had gone out on a date in the evening.

They'd visited a restaurant in the heart of the city which had gained acclaim for its tasting menu, delegated by a renowned head chef from Shinonome, offering a well rounded experience overall.

However, Yukari felt like she was the only one immersed in the experience.

"I will prepare the next dish shortly" the head chef smiled at Yukari.

Yukari gave a light nod at the blonde who also had purple eyes, appreciating the discretion, "Thank you".

They were seated away in the already intimate venue so Yukari took the opportunity the take a hold of Eirin's hand beneath the table.

It jolted the doctor back to her senses, her eyes focusing on her wife, "Yukari? Are you alright?".

"I should be asking you that again" Yukari replied, "You have been distracted all day, Eirin. Would you like to leave if you do not feel up to it?".

Eirin shook her head and laced Yukari's fingers within her own, "My apologies, this was rude of me. It's rare to have an evening like tonight so let's enjoy it, shall we?".

The blonde searched her wife's face for something indicative to reiterate that it would be better to take her home, but it seemed that Eirin was back with her.

"I'd like that very much, darling".

Eirin smiled as Yukari indicated for the head chef to resume the service and the little jolt appeared to work for Eirin, now looking like she was enjoying the food.

"The freshness is incredible" she commented on the sashimi, "Amazing"

"The salmon was swimming this morning" the chef grinned.

Yukari chuckled at the sigh coming from the brunette working along side her, "Kanata, really?".

The jovial attitude from the staff made it an even more pleasurable experience and Yukari was finally relieved to see the contemplative expression fade from Eirin's face.

But she was curious as to what was making Eirin ponder so intensely, like her thoughts had egressed from her mind.

When they were done with their meal, the duo left the establishment and headed to the parking lot.

"Has something happened at work?".

Eirin looked to her left, "What do you mean?".

"The cause of you looking so perplexed these days" Yukari questioned as they neared Eirin's car, "You have been like this for the last month and even more so recently".

Eirin opened Yukari's door, her body close to her Yukari's, blocking out the cold, "There is no switching off lawyer mode" she teased.

"This isn't lawyer mood, this is concerned wife mode".

Yukari placed her hand on Eirin's shoulder and Eirin instinctively leaned forward, noticing the worry in Yukari's face. It was just as Yukari had said, there was no trying to read into anything, she just wanted to be there for her.

"I'm sorry for worrying you" Eirin said softly, "Yes it is work related, but it should not have interfered with my time with you, Yukari. I'll make it up to you".

Yukari smiled when Eirin kissed her, "Hm, and how do you intend on doing that?".

Eirin matched her wife's mannerisms, urged her into the car before leaving her with another kiss and then returned to the driver's side and got it, now with an urgency to get home.

If Yukari had been noticing these changes in her behaviour, then Eirin knew that she was failing in atoning for the mistake she had made and was currently drowning in.

This fixation had to cease.

But Eirin would learn that it wouldn't be so easy.

***

Returning to Kaguya's after work, Kaguya had invited Keine into her home so that they could spend some time together.

Reimu was at Alice's so it was just the two of them alone tonight.

"She has been there for the week" Kaguya explained as she handed Keine a glass of wine when she sat next to her, "I think you and Alice would get along rather well".

"And not with Reimu?" Keine asked.

Kaguya smirked after sipping her drink, "Well, she's a little rough around the edges when you first meet her, but after she is comfortable with you, you'll see a different side of her".

"She sounds quite similar to a good friend of mine" Keine chuckled as she thought of Mokou, "Regardless, I look forward to meeting them".

They were sat facing each other as their conversation continued, both unwinding from the laborious day they had had and it was refreshing.

But Keine realised she was reaching her limit with the alcohol, "If I drink anymore, I won't be able to drive home".

Kaguya was leaning against her shoulder and looked up at the woman, "You could stay the night, Keine".

The way she said it left no room for error.

Keine gulped light, her lips dangerously close to Kaguya's as her hand was already settled on Kaguya's thigh.

The heat passing between them was inescapable whilst Keine asked, "Are you sure?".

Kaguya reached up and played the opening gambit by kissing Keine, moving forward till her body was being supported by Keine who now had her arms around her.

She felt Keine's fingers skim up her spine which elicited the final breathy confirmation for this to happen.

"Yes".

Kaguya then stood up and took Keine's hand, leading her into her bedroom.

She could feel Keine's eyes on her throughout every step and it made Kaguya wonder what was behind that calm exterior.

If there was something more primal in the way Keine would love her.

And Kaguya wouldn't be disappointed the moment Keine took the reins and had Kaguya on her back after they had hastily undressed each other, the taste of alcohol on their tongues and desire in their mind.

Everything Kaguya had dreamt of regarding this moment was proven to be tame in comparison to what the real Keine was doing, her lucidity as clear as day.

Settled between her legs with her arms hooked under Kaguya's thighs and mouth firmly clamped over Kaguya's nub, Keine's tongue was toying with it repeatedly, harshly, thoroughly.

Kaguya felt like her mind was being lathered in Keine's mouth; that was how much Keine was twisting her.

Her hands bunched up silver hair while she curled up almost, panting Keine's name, "Keine..w-wait".

She was going to come again, directly after the previous orgasm and she wasn't sure if she could handle it.

Keine slowed her pace and lifted her glistening face up, her fringe tousled and cheeks shimmering.

Kaguya wanted to combust at the sensual sight.

"You want me to stop?" she said with a lazy smile and moved to get up, "Okay".

Before she could, Kaguya forced Keine's head down between her thighs and she could feel the woman's lips tilt into a smirk before they enveloped her centre again.

Kaguya was too aroused to chide Keine's behaviour, liking that flicker of arrogance.

It would prove well in making her focus on nothing but Keine.

***

In Eirin's office, Kaguya was working alongside the doctor to prepare for a medical convention set for the middle of the month in Kanagawa.

They were going over the list of products to be displayed at the booth.

The meeting table at the back of Eirin's office was scattered with files as Eirin waited for Kaguya to bring her a folder which was missing.

It was tense between them, especially when they were wrestling with their own thoughts about each other.

"Is this the one?".

Eirin walked around the table, "That's right, thank you. I will finalise the details with Sagume before I leave" she said and checked her watch, "You are free to take your break now, Kaguya".

"Oh, right" Kaguya said, trying to not look at Eirin too much, "Will you be doing the same?".

"Not yet, I have to call one of our suppliers".

Eirin was too focused on the documents and it irked Kaguya, but she didn't say anything and excused herself before Eirin said something which made her stop.

"I take it you are going to see Keine".

A statement, not a question.

Kaguya turned around, her hair brushing behind her back, "Do you know her personally?".

"No, but Yukari was the one who directly recommended her to me so I interviewed her".

Kaguya hadn't been aware of this and she didn't like where the conversation was going, "Are you trying to tell me something? Like a warning? I tell someone what happened and you ruin her, or me?".

The file in Eirin's hand was slammed to the desk and Kaguya could see the rigid form of Eirin's body beneath her white shirt. The silver hair was tied over her shoulder, sweeping down her chest when she turned to face Kaguya.

"Did we not establish that I don't operate in such means, Kaguya?".

"I don't know".

"So that is your true opinion of me? I see".

Kaguya looked away before meeting Eirin's gaze again, "That isn't what I meant. What happened between us hasn't changed what I think of you. I know you wouldn't pull anything like that".

"I'm relieved" the doctor said, "So, may I ask what this thing between you and Keine is?".

"What do you mean?".

"Is it serious?".

"Why does that concern you?" Kaguya asked, not expecting the question.

Eirin sighed and moved closer to Kaguya, "Because there was clearly something between us when we were together, wasn't there? You have feelings for me, yes?".

"Not anymore. I'm leaving now".

The indurate tone caught Eirin by surprise but it definitely confirmed her own thoughts so she reached for Kaguya and placed her hand on her shoulder to turn her back.

"Kaguya".

Brushing Eirin's hand off, Kaguya glared up at Eirin, "Why are you fixated on me and what I feel when you have Yukari?".

The words threw down the gauntlet and Eirin wasn't going to back down either.

She held Kaguya's face between her hands, the touch making Kaguya gasp at the contact again.

"I feel the same".

The words opened up another calamitous ending and Kaguya didn't know what to think, especially when she saw the earnestness in Eirin's eyes.

It confirmed that their feelings were mutual.

But Kaguya knew that this wasn't going to end well.

She had Keine now, Eirin was still married.

But the hands on her face were wreaking havoc to her mind and body.

Eirin's wedding ring.

The silver band was another reminder but Eirin's soft smile simply broke beyond reason.

"Kaguya, I understand that this is not an ideal situation".

"You're right. Which is why we can't do this".

She grabbed Eirin's wrists gently and lowered them down, looking up into blue eyes which mirrored such dejection.

This was for the best, Kaguya was almost convinced of this as she let go and left the office.

Eirin watched her go, wanting to race after her but chose not to do so, not right now.

Chapter 5: Lie In Wait

Chapter Text

Yakumo Yukari was a perspicacious and erudite woman whom had an unworldly aura about her which made many fear her.

One wouldn't be mistaken to believe that she had eyes everywhere.

It was what made her a formidable lawyer and frightening foe.

She just knew.

Naturally, Yukari had sensed the disruption in her wife's vacillating demeanour for quite some time now, but she attributed that to work.

Yukari was well aware of the monumental pressures which rested on Eirin's shoulders and the effort it took for her to maintain her put together aura, backing that up almost flawlessly.

But as the woman whom had captured Eirin's heart, it was only logical that Yukari knew Eirin unlike anyone else could.

So she was aware that Eirin was hiding something from her, something that wasn't related to work per se.

Looking out of the window in their bedroom, Yukari was in the midst of a phone call whilst she waited for Eirin to come home to her.

It was close to 10 PM now and though not unusual for Eirin to return at this time, the frequency in which she was doing so as of late was cause for concern.

But that concern was somewhat subsided as she listened to Okina on the phone, "She is drunk?".

Yukari could hear the blonde's grin, "Kanako is keeping an eye on her. We'll be heading home soon anyway. Besides, it has been a while since I've seen Eirin like this. Sure takes me back to our university days".

"Which Eirin would rather forget" Yukari chuckled.

"You should join us, Yukari!" another voice called out, "Eirin hasn't stopped going on about you".

"Ah, Toyohime, it has been a while".

"Hasn't it? We need to meet outside of office hours!" the woman laughed, "You won't believe the drama going on!".

"None caused by your boss, I hope?".

"Eirin's as strictly kind as ever. But get this, her personal assistant is totally hooking up with one of the research assistant's!".

Yukari arched a brow as she paced around her bedroom and went to the vanity, "Oh? Do tell".

Just then, Okina's phone had clearly been taken away by someone else, that someone being her very inebriated wife.

"Ignore her" Eirin spoke up, slightly slurred, "Kaguya isn't seeing anyone".

"And how are you so sure of that?" Toyohime replied, "Have you seen the way they look at each other when they pass by?!".

"That's nonsense".

"Eirin is feeling threatened that her assistant is being stolen away" Okina answered again, "Anyway, it's time for us to leave before Eirin puts Toyohime in a headlock. We'll see you in a bit".

The call then ended as Yukari placed her phone down and undid her hair, the blonde locks spilling free after she had sat down.

This was quite intriguing.

Eirin rarely drank till she got to such a stage.

And when did she become concerned about the personal lives of her staff to this degree?

Yukari thought back to when Kaguya joined the company as she placed her elbows on the vanity after taking off her wedding ring and watch.

It was true that Eirin had certainly changed a tad since then and it was after the gala that these changes became notable.

But nothing to indicate anything like the dark thoughts brewing in Yukari's mind.

Eirin was simply thrilled to have another competent assistant and Yukari could see why after meeting Kaguya herself.

So for now, Yukari would simply observe and wait.

***

Spring was around the corner and Eirin tended to be at the labs more often than not.

So it had been a while since she was in her office such as now where a meeting was underway.

Kaguya had limited her exposure to Eirin only to when on the clock.

They didn't engage in any casual conversation, and she declined invitations to events but the fact that she had revealed to Eirin that she felt the same was a mistake.

The meeting had concluded just before lunch and Kaguya escorted the employees out before returning to her desk to log out for her own break.

She glanced into Eirin's office to see the woman working away, eyes focused on whatever she was looking over and signing.

Kaguya's chest ached but for the sake of their partnership, she pushed down anything urging to burst out, hoping it'll reach a quietus.

She went to her door and knocked on it, waiting for Eirin to call her in.

"Come in".

"I'm going for my lunch break now".

"Ah.." Eirin said and checked the time on her watch, "Of course".

"Should I pick you anything up? Coffee?"

"No, thank you" the woman smiled, though Kaguya could see it was strained, "Have a good lunch, Kaguya".

They stared at each other, actually looking face to face rather than the askance glances they had been giving.

Kaguya looked away first and bid goodbye before closing the door, heading to the elevator after collecting her bag and coat.

She could feel Eirin's eyes on her, making it hard to breath, now too aware that she had had the same effect on her boss.

When the elevator closed, Eirin sighed and sat back on her chair, her mind constantly thinking about Kaguya whilst the wedding ring on her finger was toyed with.

She had already abrogated the commitments on the marriage certificate between herself and Yukari.

And Eirin couldn't keep this up, try as she may, this blatant ignoring of this attraction to Kaguya.

That night with Kaguya and every day with her had stirred something deep within her heart.

Her own words had come home to roost, about how nothing could happen between them again.

The rest of their afternoon went in the usual manner and when it came to the time for Kaguya to leave, she let Eirin know again, the woman by the door.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Eirin".

"Wait".

Eirin stood up and walked to where Kaguya was, pulling her gently into the office before closing the door.

The hand in hers had Kaguya backing away as she moved Eirin's away, "Don't do this, please".

Eirin shook her head and placed her hands on Kaguya's face, "I cannot leave it like this, I cannot leave you alone".

"Eirin!".

Hands balled up the doctor's sweater but she wasn't pushed away and Eirin took it as a sign.

"That expression on your face. I want to stop it".

"You can't" Kaguya shuddered and leaned back on the door whilst she placed a hand over Eirin's left, "Because of this. Because of your wife. Because you have made a commitment to someone else, and so have I".

"Kaguya".

"And I can tell that you love Yukari, so I'm not going to give you an ultimatum" she stressed, "We can't do this and as much as I do, as much as I want you..there is too much at risk.

"There does not have to be a risk. All I know at this moment is that we feel the same about each other, yes?".

"I-".

"Tell me, Kaguya, do you feel the same?".

The thumbs on her face wiped away the tears streaming down as Eirin's lips hovered over the younger woman's.

"Kaguya..tell me you do not want this and I will stop. I don't know how, but if you wish to end this, I will respect your wishes".

Given an out from what was about to happen, Kaguya's logical side should have said as much, should have stated clearly that she didn't want this.

Yet, her heart had silenced the sense of her mind.

"I want you".

It was whispered over Eirin's lips, the kiss following as a confirmation.

Eirin let out a shaky breath as she wrapped her arms around Kaguya's waist, backing her up to the door, their eyes meeting.

"Then give me time. We will figure this out"

Kaguya pulled Eirin onto her, their bodies pressed together as their kiss, which felt overdue, carried out the rest of their feelings.

Moving one hand to lock the door and close the blinds on the window, Eirin then moved Kaguya to the sofa on the other side of the room.

Their lips rarely left each other as Kaguya was laid down, her hands taking off Eirin's sweater, "Here?".

"I cannot wait any longer".

"Me neither".

***

Kaguya's mind had been overtaken by thoughts on what to do about this involuted situation she was in following that day.

But if there was one thing she had absolute certitude over, it was that this was unfair to Keine.

She wanted Eirin, there was nothing more to it and they decided that they would figure it out together, so Kaguya needed to sever ties with Keine.

To say that Keine was blindsided was an understatement.

Deciding to meet Keine in a cafe, Kaguya kept it simple but it didn’t lessen the contrition she felt when she saw Keine's expression.

"I don't understand, was it something I did, Kaguya?".

She reached out and placed a hand over Kaguya's as the dulled conversation of the few other customers blurred into background noise.

Kaguya was quick to deny such claims, "No, not at all. You're perfect" she smiled sadly, "And you deserve someone who can give all of their time and effort to love you. I feel terrible for taking what I did before knowing what my thoughts were".

"You didn't take anything" Keine reiterated, "I like you, Kaguya, I want to see where this goes, so is there a chance that you can think it over?".

Eirin's face flashed through her mind, as if that was all the ruminating she needed to do.

If Keine knew the truth, then she wouldn't be so insistent on wanting to try with her.

"I'm sorry, Keine".

Keine didn't let go of the other woman's hand, "Is there someone else?"

The pause was brief but Keine saw it.

"No, it's just that I am not ready to be in a relationship right now" Kaguya lied.

Whether it was for her own sake or Keine's, Kaguya couldn't distinguish it.

"To continue this relationship as I am now would be unfair to you and like I said, you deserve someone who will devote everything to you".

Keine cast her gaze down, "I thought that someone was you. I was absolutely sure of it".

All Kaguya could do was apologise again whilst squeezing Keine's hand gently over her own before withdrawing them.

"Take care, Keine, I'll see you around. I'm sorry".

They still worked together, after all.

Kaguya didn’t know how the circumstance would turn out but the arduous part was done.

Yet, Keine's dejected expression would follow her as she left the cafe.

The early spring air hit her face as the rush of people heading home from their day's endeavours floated around the area. It was still somewhat chilly in the prefecture so Kaguya was dressed in a coat and scarf over her clothes as she navigated through the crowds.

It helped to cancel out the tone of Keine's voice in her head.

As for Keine, she remained in the cafe as she tried to centre her thoughts whilst she fiddled with the handle of her cup.

Is there someone else?

It wasn't her imagination, Kaguya most certainly did pause.

The question remained as to whether there was any point in dwelling over this since Kaguya had clearly made up her mind.

But Keine couldn't stop thinking about it.

A confirmation had long been given to her.

***

The affair between Eirin and Kaguya would continue into the spring but neither would drop their guard whenever they were at the office together.

Kaguya being Eirin's personal assistant provided enough of a cover for overnight trips and lengthy business excursions, so nobody suspected anything.

It was only when they were away from Ehime that they lost their senses to the world around them

Such as now when they had gone to watch the cherry blossoms in Akita where Eirin had a consult.

After work, it was all play.

Kaguya was resting against Eirin's shoulder as the two were seated under one of the cherry blossom trees, one which was away from the eyes of others so it felt like it was just the two of them being bathed in the petals.

Looking up at Eirin, Kaguya smiled when the older woman leaned down and kissed her, chaste and sweet.

But it always left her wanting more.

It was as if Eirin had become her form of sustenance and substance, her only need to satiate the hunger and love inside of her.

Maybe she was getting greedy, or perhaps Kaguya was making up for lost time, but either way, nothing else mattered when she was alone with Eirin.

Those sentiments were mutual for Eirin who found it impossible to keep her eyes off of her assistant.

After they returned to their hotel room following a symposium in Mie, Eirin could barely restrain herself when they entered the room.

Kaguya was in front of her so she quickly pulled her back till she could wrap her arms around her waist and her lips were over Kaguya's, feeling her smile.

It was intoxicating for Eirin, to feel the desperation in the way Kaguya was trying to unbutton her blouse but failing because Eirin had slid her tongue into her mouth.

She wanted to take everything from Kaguya, and give it all back till only she resided in the woman's mind.

Eirin whispered as much when her right hand lifted the hem of Kaguya's dress while her left arm remained firmly around Kaguya's waist as she entered her, feeling her fingers became ensnared instantly.

She was already this eager, making it easier for Eirin to push between the muscles to start the stimulating and teasing till Kaguya was gripping her feverishly, the blouse tangled and creased.

It made Eirin smirk as Kaguya tilted her head back and moaned, knowing that Kaguya had been thinking about it too during the symposium.

When they were at Eientei, they had to be more astute about their surroundings and temper their desire for each other.

But it wasn't always possible, especially when Eirin's office was her own floor, offering them as much privacy when needed, especially after hours.

The longer days were breaking through and with it, the fervour between them became uncontrollable at times.

Kaguya had gone to close the blinds for this very purpose but Eirin had already walked over to her, pressing her against the window with her arms on either side of her head.

However, she wasn't about to let Eirin have all the fun though.

With a mischievous grin and a glow in her eyes, Kaguya turned around to face Eirin and ran her hands over Eirin's body as she went down onto her knees.

Eirin almost keeled over and rested her head on her arm as her other hand remained flat against the window, now covered in condensation.

She lowered that hand and moved Kaguya's hair back whilst her skirt was fully pushed up over her hips, allowing the teasing tongue to trace and taunt till Eirin's knees were trembling.

In the haze of their desire, Eirin and Kaguya would miss the sound of the elevator door closing.

***

On the outskirts of Yukari's law firm, she was parked up in a forested area whilst waiting for her contact to give her the details of a case she had been working on.

One which entailed her own wife.

The beams of the setting sun cut through the trees as she was handed an envelop, one of two.

Her contact was anxious as Yukari took out the contents of the envelope and took in each photo.

So it was true.

This was a given since Yukari's instincts never failed her.

Her eyes scanned the images of her wife in the arms of another woman.

Kaguya.

Yukari's silence was terrifying as she went through the images of Kaguya and Eirin in different hotels and prefectures, leaving hand in hand, and other's showing them kissing when they assumed nobody else was around.

"Well, I take it you have something else as concrete evidence?".

"I do, but are you sure you want these too? The pictures are enough".

Yukari said nothing and motioned for the other envelope which was handed to her.

The contents of this envelop revealed screenshots of text messages between Kaguya and Eirin.

Yukari was impressed, "I take it you obtained these after sleeping with her?".

Her contact looked away, a blend of compunction and shame on their features which made Yukari chuckle.

"This was a decision you made on your own accord, was it not?".

"That doesn't need discussing, Yukari. I have provided what you needed, so it's time you deliver your part of the agreement".

Yukari looked at the messages again before putting them back into the envelope, placing it over the other one as she met her contact's eyes.

"Leave that to me. For the time being, make sure you have no presence in the school, nor should your friend who made quite the scene with the councillors" the lawyer advised, "While the anger is warranted about the unfair closure of your school, you both need to keep your hands clean in order for the case to stick".

"What are our chances of winning?".

"With me representing you? 100%".

This was a relief for the contact to hear as it was the only reason they had sought out Yukari, because they knew of the lawyer's reputation to raze her opponents.

However, Yukari hadn't wanted money in exchange of their services, thus leading to this agreement between them.

With all the parts on her chessboard set, Yukari implemented the next stage as she headed back to her car, but her contact was curious about something.

"What are you going to do now, Yukari?".

The blonde opened her vehicle door and turned over her shoulder, her expression unreadable which was disconcerting.

"That is for me to know, and you to find out".

Her contact assumed that they would be hearing about a leak of the affair by Yukari herself, so they didn't ask anything else when Yukari got into her car and looked at them once before driving off.

While Yukari was all poised and composed on the outside, her inner turmoil felt like it was tearing her apart.

Eirin was cheating on her.

Her hands remained on the steering wheel as she drove out onto the main roads, expecting how much traffic there was at this time of the day.

It was nearing 6 PM so people were rushing to leave work, living out their days in blissful ignorance.

Just like she had been.

Yukari stopped at the traffic lights as she glanced at the envelopes on the passenger seat; the tangible evidence of the betrayal she had been embroiled in.

The pictures and messages were already engrained into her head.

Yukari exhaled and tried to steady her breath as she drove ahead when the lights changed, heading into the direction of her home to be greeted by the emptiness more than ever.

Are you with her now, Eirin?

Her wife had said that she wouldn't be home for a while and that Yukari shouldn't wait up for her.

Is that why you are working late?

Yukari's ire kept building, envisioning Kaguya all over Eirin and Eirin accepting her.

Perhaps in hindsight, she should have seen this happening.

It was a few weeks after the gala that Yukari's suspicions started to accumulate, especially when she saw the change in the way Eirin and Kaguya interacted, a vast difference to how they started off as.

Yukari had dealt with many cases dealing with cheating spouses so she knew what to look for and once her doubts were quelled by a solid feeling of being right, Yukari was wondering on how to deal with it.

And that was when her contact came to her.

Her thoughts would be disturbed when her phone rang, Eirin's name on the dashboard.

Yukari answered it, "Hello, Eirin" she said calmly, "Is everything alright?".

"It is, I just wanted to know if you are home yet?".

"On my way. How is that project going? Keeping your hands busy, hm?".

Eirin chuckled at her wife's humour, completely oblivious of the knowledge Yukari had and how it was taking everything in Yukari's arsenal to remain impassive.

"Unfortunately so" Eirin replied, "Are you going to pick something up for dinner?".

"No need, I don't have much of an appetite".

"Are you sure? Ah, I have to go but I will be home soon, Yukari. Call me if you change your mind".

"Of course, I'll leave a message with Kaguya if need be" Yukari said, testing the waters, "Is she still there with you?".

Eirin paused for a moment, like she was looking around for the woman in question and then spoke up, "Yes, she offered to stay behind".

"Of course she did" the blonde chuckled darkly, "I shall leave you to it then now, Eirin".

"I love you, Yukari" Eirin said quietly.

Yukari didn't reply and ended the call there, the silence of the car taking over as the sun had almost sank beneath the skyline, the high buildings around her creating a shadow which engulfed everything.

How those words sounded so hollow now.

Back at the forested area, Yukari's contact was still processing the turn of events.

Their part of the deal was done so they could wash their hands of Eientei.

Including Kaguya.

Keine remained rooted to the spot, wondering what kind of irremediable consequences lie in wait for all those involved.

Consequences that she herself was complicit in by partnering up with Yukari.

Chapter 6: Shattered Illusion

Chapter Text

The affair between Eirin and Kaguya would go on into the early summer.

Whether it was moments in the office, overnight 'business' trips, or working late, the duo made the most of the time they had together.

One morning, Kaguya was heading to the elevator with two coffee cups in her hand and the button was pushed by someone next to her.

She turned and gazed up into violet eyes, "Well, good morning to you, Kaguya".

Kaguya almost jumped back at the gamesome tone, "Ah, hello, Yukari. I didn't think you were dropping by today".

The blonde chuckled, "I thought it would be a nice surprise for my wife. She left too early for my liking, especially after the night she gave me".

Kaguya stepped into the elevator and Yukari was stood next to her, appearing nonchalant.

"My apologies, I'm sure you do not want such details about your boss".

"Not this early in the morning" Kaguya managed to quip.

"After coffee, in that case" the blonde winked, "Oh, how was Kyoto?".

Kyoto.

Last weekend, Eirin and Kaguya had gone to a business meeting, supposedly, and had barely left their hotel room.

Kaguya steeled herself as the elevator arrived to the top floor, "It was busy between the conference and planning so we didn't get much of a chance to explore".

"How unfortunate as it is a beautiful city, is it  not? Almost romantic".

The door opened just as Yukari had said those words and Kaguya almost froze, willing for her feet to move.

"Or so I'm told" Yukari added, a smirk on her lips, "You should get that to Eirin before it gets cold, Kaguya".

"Right, please excuse me".

Kaguya didn't rush but there was a celerity in her steps since she could feel violet eyes on her as she reached Eirin's door when it opened.

Eirin saw Yukari and managed to remain neutral as she smiled at her wife after thanking Kaguya.

"Yukari, is everything alright?".

The woman walked in and kissed Eirin, "I wanted to see you before heading to the office".

Eirin's gaze switched between Kaguya and Yukari, "I just need to brief Kaguya on today's schedule so I won't be long".

"That's fine, I can wait" she smiled and walked into Eirin's office.

She took a seat where the sofa and table were, getting comfortable whilst Kaguya sat at Eirin's desk.

Eirin wasn't sure what to make of this but she thought nothing of it since Yukari had done this before, so she took a seat, sending a reassuring look to Kaguya.

"Okay, today is going to be fairly busy given the release of our new drug".

Yukari was focused on her phone but was as observant as ever, thinking back to her moment with Kaguya in the elevator, particularly the perfume she had been wearing.

I can smell you on her, Eirin.

It was a perfume Yukari had brought her wife and was one of her favourites so she knew that scent anywhere

And for it to be that potent on Kaguya meant that either it was sprayed on her, or they were in very close proximity.

The blue perfume bottle was at home, so the answer as to which it was didn't need deliberating on.

Even now, she could deduce how Kaguya was quite relaxed in front of Eirin but she didn't miss the way those brown eyes flickered over to her.

***

Unaware that Yukari had discovered what was going on, Eirin and Kaguya remained as they were, sneaking around whilst ensuring to take great care when they were together following Yukari's little stunt.

However, if there was one thing Eirin had forgotten about her wife, it was her perceptive nature, it was how dangerous she could be behind her disport.

In the court room, she bided her time, trapping the opposition to the wall before biting down on their jugular, and then drained them with an abundance of satisfaction.

It was rare for Yukari to lose a case which is why she was sought after, renowned and revered, sometimes reprehensible when need be.

Yukari lay awake one night in their bed, Eirin's back turned to her as she slept soundly, unaware of her wife's eyes on her.

The blonde was gentle in running her fingertips over the exposed area of Eirin's back above her nightgown.

Her violet eyes were fixated on a line near her shoulder blade, nail marks in particular.

I don't recall leaving those.

She poked her index finger in deeper and Eirin stirred but didn't wake up.

If she did, she would have seen the calm fury radiating from the woman she has betrayed.

Is she making you reckless, Eirin?

Yukari leaned in closer, lips hovering over the red line as she curled her arm over Eirin's waist, their bodies connected.

Now, Eirin did wake up, moving till she could turn around, "Yukari? Are you okay?".

She pulled the blonde against her, arms around her body and chin resting on top of Yukari's head.

Yukari's mouth was close to Eirin's neck, her jugular.

"Hm, go back to sleep".

She was calculating, wondering whether to ruin the woman she loved, or the woman her wife was clearly attached to.

So many options.

"Have you slept at all?" Eirin asked, running a hand through Yukari's hair.

"Just enough".

Enough to think about her next step

***

Heading home from the office one evening, Kaguya wasn't expecting to see Yukari pull up in front of her.

She stopped as Yukari lowered the window to the passenger seat, "Care for a lift on this balmy but rainy summer evening?".

"Ah, I think I'll be fine, thank you" Kaguya declined, "I could do with the air".

Yukari locked eyes with her, "Now, now, that wasn't an invitation".

While Yukari's affable tone was present, there was something in her eyes which felt even more chilling than the light rain fall.

Kaguya had no choice but to get into the car, her hand on her phone within her pocket and lingering over Eirin's name.

Yukari smiled, "Is Eirin still in the office?".

"She is, there is a meeting ongoing".

"She didn't need you present?".

"It seems so" Kaguya replied, "Shall I give you my address?".

"No need" the blonde said ominously, "I do apologise for suddenly taking you like this".

Kaguya heard no sincerity, "Is there something you needed, Yukari?".

"I am worried about Eirin".

The younger woman glanced at Yukari's face, "What do you mean?"

"You are her personal assistant, yes? Have you noticed anything strange about her? Such as her behaviour?".

Kaguya kept her cool, "Not really. She is very busy these days so I can't really tell if there is anything off about her. Have you asked Eirin directly?".

The blonde paused, driving around a bend, "She would deny it. You know how she is. If anything, since you spend more time with her, I assumed you would know. That wife of mine can get quite secretive".

"Really?".

Yukari laughed softly, "Truly, one would think she is having an affair with how secretive she becomes".

Kaguya managed a wry laugh in return and stared outside of the window and into the settling darkness, not recognising the path.

"The road to my apartment was the last right, Yukari".

"I am aware".

Yukari kept staring straight ahead as she drove into a park nearby, the branches  brushing with the breeze and covered in a light drizzle with only a few street lights illuminating the path.

Kaguya could feel her apprehension rising, "Where are we going?".

"For a little drive. No need to look so worried, I merely want to speak to you".

"Like I said, I don't know what is going on with Eirin and whether she is behaving oddly or not".

"Is that so?" Yukari hummed and turned left, the area becoming even more remote, "I have to say I am disappointed. My only cause and concern in this world is Eirin. She is my wife, someone I love. Have you ever experienced such a feeling before, Kaguya?".

Kaguya's grip on her phone tightened, "I have".

"Then you must understand the lengths I will go to in order to protect my marriage, don't you? So, I need a favour".

Yukari veered back onto the main road and Kaguya was relieved to see cars passing by and homes nearby.

It was taking everything in her to remain composed.

This meant that Yukari knew, didn't she?

Or was she reading into things?

"Keep an eye on Eirin for me".

Kaguya glanced at Yukari, "How so? I will not infringe on her privacy or spy on her".

"How admirable" the blonde chuckled, "I am not asking you to. What I am asking is for you to keep an eye on the women she interacts with".

"What are you accusing her of? I should at least be aware of this much".

"You clever girl" Yukari thought to herself, pulling up to Kaguya's residence.

She stopped in front of her apartment and unlocked the door before turning to face the startled woman who was clearly keeping her distance.

Kaguya was ready to bolt out.

Leaning in, Yukari's features were concealed by the darkness but Kaguya could see those eyes, vibrant and dangerous.

"When you find what I am looking for, you will know the answer too".

Yukari said nothing more, a cutting chill lingering as Kaguya opened the door, legs shaky.

"Have a good night, Kaguya".

The woman nodded once and made her way into the apartment, her heart racing and head spinning as Yukari watched her go.

As soon as Kaguya was in the building and away from others, she crouched down against the wall and took in a deep breath.

Yukari knew something, if not it being Kaguya, then someone else.

***

After that encounter, it was difficult for Kaguya to keep it together, especially when Yukari started to give deliberate hints as to who Eirin's mystery woman was.

She hadn't told Eirin about the car ride, nor had she told Alice and Reimu that she was seeing Eirin.

So Kaguya's mind was elsewhere and she was jumpy, her eyes skirting around everywhere.

"Kaguya?".

The woman felt lips near her temple and arms around her waist, her gaze going up to see Eirin.

"I'm sorry, what were you saying?".

They were in Eirin's car, returning to the hotel they were staying in and when Eirin had called out to Kaguya, she hadn't responded.

Eirin was concerned as she ran her lips beneath Kaguya's cheek, "You've been distracted lately. Are you okay? Talk to me".

The younger woman rested her head on Eirin's shoulder, sighing, "I'm sorry".

"Now then, no more apologies. I just want to know if there is anything I can do to help. Do you need some time off?".

Caring as ever, Kaguya held onto Eirin's blouse and closed her eyes as images of Yukari came to mind.

She knew why the blonde would turn hell on its head to keep Eirin with her, she knew she was the other woman, and yet, she couldn't bring herself to leave Eirin despite how hazardous it was getting.

It had been 7 months since their affair began and a month since Yukari had found out about it, rather, confirmed it.

Time was closing in on them.

Kaguya decided to put that behind her and enjoy the rest of their night here before heading back to Ehime tomorrow, so she pulled back and cupped Eirin's face, smirking slightly.

"And miss the chance to see you? I would rather not".

Her lips went to Eirin's neck and the woman gasped lightly, her own smile tugging at her lover's playful nature.

"You and that honeyed tongue of yours".

Said tongue ran up the side of her neck as a hand settled on her chest, squeezing the fullness, "Let's go back to our room. I'll show you what else that tongue can do".

Any response from the older woman was further stymied when kisses followed to her throat and the hand which was fiiled slowly picked up the pace, skimming down her chest between the area her buttons were undone.

Eirin chuckled when Kaguya moved back, leaving her thoroughly aroused and wanting more, furthering that appeal by biting her own lip before exiting the car.

She took a breath to compose herself before following out, her eyes on Kaguya like a predator.

Eirin's phone was buzzing in her coat pocket on silent, her mind too focused on the woman in front of her, instead of the woman behind her parked down the street.

Baneful violet eyes watched as Eirin wound her arms around Kaguya's waist, making the woman laugh while she wrapped her arms over Eirin's.

They looked the picture of a happy couple, or two people meeting for a clandestine endeavour, depending on what one knew.

And the one who knew was done being played like a fool.

***

The next day, Eirin woke up to the feeling of fingers running through her hair, a familiar touch she enjoyed waking up to.

She could feel Kaguya's arms around her waist, her face near her neck and the soft wisps of her breathing resting on her skin.

"Good morning, sweetheart".

The haze of the night before started to lift as Eirin stretched out and pushed her hair back from her face and in doing so, she made two observations.

Kaguya was still asleep.

There was somebody else in the room.

That austere voice sounded familiar.

Her blue eyes opened to meet violet.

"Yukari..".

Kaguya, feeling Eirin going rigid, woke up, "Eirin, what's wrong?".

"Isn't that a question I would like answered too".

When it wasn't Eirin who responded, Kaguya shot up too, the blankets pulled up to her chest as she looked at Yukari who was stood by their bed, an ominous look on her face.

Eirin grabbed a robe for herself and Kaguya as she kept her eyes on her wife, "Yukari, I-".

"Stop".

The blonde paced around the luxurious room, the atmosphere tense and awkward, her heels light against the flooring. Since Yukari was in a casual purple dress, it meant that she hadn't been in the office.

Eirin was piecing everything together.

She tied the white robe and looked over at Kaguya.

Kaguya was pale and Eirin needed to calm her down but before that, she needed to assess the situation.

Yukari had known about the affair.

"How long have I known?" Yukari said in a cold tone when she saw the question all over her wife's face, "Over a month. I wouldn't have assumed anything until I started getting intel that my wife was often seen entering hotels with another woman".

Eirin stood up, her long hair loose as she approached Yukari, who then turned to face her as she revealed the rest.

"So I had someone keep tabs on your assistant" she motioned with her head, "And I also overheard your heartfelt confessions to each other when you were in your office, assuming you were alone. Admittedly, to hear you renege our vows so easily has wounded me in ways unimaginable, Eirin".

The information stunned both women and Yukari had to laugh.

"Eirin, who do you think you married? Did you think I wouldn't find out?".

"I'm not going to stand here and try to justify myself, I know that I am in the wrong here".

"Oh, how chivalrous of you" Yukari scoffed, "I suppose that makes everything better".

"I did not say that".

Yukari glanced at Kaguya, "Did you make the first move on my wife?".

"I..I don't know".

"We were drunk, Yukari" Eirin tried to mollify, "This detail isn't necessary. Let's just talk this through".

Yukari smirked, stormed up to Eirin and showed the ring belonging to Eirin, pushing it to her chest

"No, you do not get to make the demands, Eirin. I am going to keep this simple".

Eirin had a sickening feeling as to what Yukari was going to say next and there was no way assuage the quiet rage running through her wife.

"Yukari, please".

"You either end things with her, or end our marriage for her".

There was nothing but frightening composure in Yukari's eyes as Eirin looked at Kaguya.

"I am not giving you time to think" Yukari then said, "We are not going on a 'break', there is no discussion of this beyond this room".

Kaguya had stood up, trying to keep her voice levelled, "Eirin?".

The blonde smirked a tad, moving her hand away from Eirin's chest which let the ring fall, but Eirin caught it.

"It seems as if she agrees with me".

"I don't want to draw this out" Kaguya said, "Yukari, I'm sorry for how this ended, but you should know that Eirin didn't pursue me".

"Ah, yes. It just happened?" Yukari scoffed, "The attraction between you both was irrefutable? You would not believe the number of times I have heard these vapid excuses" she divulged, lips in a sneer, "I never assumed I would have to hear it about my own wife".

Eirin wanted to reach out, but she was at a crossroad now.

And Yukari would continue to bear down on her.

"There is a third option should you choose to disagree with the other two" Yukari then added, "I will ruin both of you by making this public".

Kaguya depicted her horror at this as she looked at Eirin, the doctor's blue eyes just as wide.

It was a simple decision, at least on the surface because Yukari had essentially given Eirin no escape at all now.

And yet, Eirin knew that her answer would unleash chaos either way, especially when her wife proffered the supposed third choice.

Eirin remained motionless for a moment, she gaze switching between both women before remaining on Yukari.

What was she prepared to lose in order to keep the other?

The gut wrenching decision felt suffocating and Eirin felt like she couldn't breath, her mind, renowned for its sharpness and ingenuity, now reduced to the absolute basic.

What she hadn't realised was that the pause and silence was a deafening answer for one woman.

Kaguya understood.

"Eirin".

The doctor looked her way, as did Yukari.

"I'm going to leave, I think it is best for us all this way".

"Kaguya, I-."

A sad smile braced Kaguya's lips, "Remember what I said? How I would never make you choose?".

Eirin couldn't forget as it was the moment they finally confronted what they were feeling.

"Well, I guess I have to make this decision".

Even though she didn't want to, even though Kaguya wanted Eirin, she knew that Eirin wouldn't stop loving Yukari.

Kaguya collected her belongs while Eirin wrestled between stopping her and letting her go.

"You can change in the room opposite and there is a car waiting for you outside to take you home".

The way Yukari had said it seemed like it was apparent that Eirin would choose her.

It proved to Eirin once again how on the sama page Yukari and Kaguya were and she didn't know what to feel.

Especially when Kaguya turned back and looked at her, "Goodbye, Eirin".

Before the doctor could respond, Kaguya left the room, the door closing quietly.

She took in a quick breath, feeling her wife's eyes on her, "You did not doubt for a second, did you? That everything would end this way".

"Well, she chose for you" Yukari shrugged, "I merely laid out the options for her, not you".

Eirin took a seat on the edge of the bed, her body feeling like it was going to crumble as she looked at the ring in her palm.

The woman wondered if subconsciously, she had chosen Yukari too.

Yukari walked by her to take a seat on the sofa but Eirin reached for her hand, "Yukari".

"Don't touch me" the blonde shook her off, "Not after you've had your hands on her" she warned, "I have a lot to think about and so do you".

"Can we talk about this?".

"No, I cannot stand to be around you right now. 15 years, Eirin..15 years of our marriage and this is what you do".

"I was not seeking this so please do not make it out as so" Eirin argued, looking up at her wife, "Kaguya-

"Kaguya isn't innocent in this but you are the married one! It was your responsibility to deny her!".

It was a simple statement which hammered home the truth.

Yukari stepped back, her breathing faster than usual and Eirin could only stand up without getting close too her. She wanted to comfort Yukari even if it seemed meaningless right now, because this was her fault.

The blonde turned away and steeled her composure but the grief was starting to push through the anger.

"I'm so sorry, Yukari, I..".

Eirin knew how hollow the apology sounded, so she couldn't continue.

It was an insult to Yukari.

The consequences of Eirin's betrayal hadn't left any of them without wounds, now too deep.

Whether they could even begin to be healed remained to be seen.

Chapter Text

When Eirin arrived at the office the next morning, all of Kaguya's belongings had been cleared off of her desk.

Dread pooled in her stomach as she raced into her office and called HR.

"She resigned" Eirin repeated, "I see. Thank you".

Eirin placed the cordless phone down onto its base before she placed her hands on her desk, her mind running with a ferocity that not even she could keep up with.

Should she be surprised that Kaguya quit?

She had chosen Yukari, why would Kaguya want to stay with her even in a professional setting?

Eirin looked at her phone and the temptation to call Kaguya was overwhelming. She had deleted all her contact details but Eirin remembered her number and could easily call her now, but she had made a promise to Yukari that night.

When they returned home, another heated argument followed, Yukari's facade had broken and she threatened to leave her.

I'll ask you again, Eirin, is our marriage worth losing?

Once Yukari started, she let everything out.

Are the years we have spent together meaningless now?

As much as she felt strongly for Kaguya, just looking into Yukari's shimmering violet eyes conjured every frame of their life together.

From the day they met, to the moment they fell in love, and every moment between.

Are you no longer in love with me?

It was why she couldn't outright choose Kaguya.

The doctor slumped down to her chair and leaned back as she took in a deep breath, wondering how she ended up in this situation.

She had hurt Yukari and Kaguya.

A knock to the door would alert Eirin of someone's presence so she righted herself, her mask back on to mitigate the whirlwind she was embroiled in.

"Come in".

Keine stepped into Eirin's office, "Excuse me, can I have a moment, please?".

It was the last person she wanted to see and she had a sound idea as to why Keine was here.

"Can I help you?".

Keine closed the door and stepped in front of Eirin's desk, "Kaguya..why did she quit?" she asked, pretending to be unaware, "Everyone else has been asking too".

"I cannot share the private details of why my employees quit. Surely you must be aware of this".

"I see. It was sudden, is all. Kaguya enjoyed her time here so I was quite surprised to hear the news".

"Are you sure it didn't have anything to do with your relationship, Keine?" Eirin asked and leaned forward, blue eyes sharp, "I imagine that would have caused her some stress".

You hypocrite.

How Keine wanted to launch those words at Eirin and the temptation to do so was overwhelming.

But Keine kept her cool and relaxed her fists, folding her hands in front of her, "We ended things a while ago. If she had an issue with it, she would have left then".

Eirin and Keine stared each other down, the tension gripping as both were aware and unaware of pivotal parts to each other's relationship.

If Keine revealed that it was Yukari whom had hired her to reveal her sordid secret, she knew she could do some damage to Eirin.

But for now, she kept quiet.

"Perhaps. I'll be leaving then".

With a low bow, Keine left the room, leaving Eirin feeling rattled.

"Are you sure you're doing okay? We can go back to the apartment if you don't feel up to being out? Or, just say the word and I'll wait for Eirin outside of Eientei with a bat".

Under normal circumstances, Alice would be the first to chide Reimu's shoot and ask questions later temperament, but this time, she didn't refute the idea.

Considering what Kaguya had been enduring since she left Eientei, and even prior to that, Eirin would deserve it.

A week had gone by since that morning at the hotel.

"See, the fact that Alice hasn't told me off means that she is on board with it too" Reimu smirked.

The three were at a nearby park for some fresh air whilst the temperatures were cooling to a tolerable level.

Kaguya glanced at Alice on her left, noting the smile, "Alice?".

The blonde chuckled as she sipped her cold drink before answering, "It isn't the worst idea Reimu has had" she said, "Some situations can only be fixed by such a method".

Reimu was preening over her victory as Alice and Kaguya laughed whilst other denizens walked around them.

Kaguya felt the ice in her drink collide with the cup while they approached some benches and sat down whilst she thought on that morning.

Eirin.

Yukari.

That choice.

"I let the situation get this far, so it wouldn't be fair on Eirin".

Alice sat next to Kaguya and Reimu sat opposite them, shaking her head, "You don't have to defend her. If her wife had already figured it out and made her choose, then that says it all. She wasn't serious about you".

"I don't think it's that simple" Kaguya tried to reason.

"Because of her wife and how long they have been together?" Alice asked.

"Partially. I know Eirin wasn't lying about the way she felt about me".

Then why did she hesitate?

The question reverberated around Kaguya's mind, too often without an answer in sight, or rather, one which reaffirmed Eirin's feelings for her.

She stared ahead into the tree line, the verdant leaves flailing with the breeze whilst the late summer sun continued to dip beneath the horizon.

"Whatever she felt for Yukari did overtake what she and I had. I suppose it wasn't even a competition when you think about it. Even so, I know that what Eirin felt was real, she isn't that skilled of a liar".

Reimu mused on it as she took in her friend's faraway expression and then shared a glance with Alice.

The blonde smiled sadly at her lover, indicating to her that all they could do is just be there for Kaguya now.

"At least, she wasn't lying when with me".

"What is it that you want to do now, Kaguya?" Alice gently asked, "I do agree with Reimu when she says that Eirin is not deserving of your time and thoughts anymore".

"Right? You've wasted enough time on someone who didn’t deserve you".

And deep down, Kaguya knew that they were both correct to think this.

With a new job lined up and the experience gained from Eientei under her belt, there was no point remaining attached to what was, and never would be.

As the weeks went on, Kaguya would find that she couldn't leave all of Eientei behind.

When Keine of all people had reached out to her, Kaguya was taken aback when she had called one evening, asking if they could meet up to talk for a bit.

After the way she had ended it with Keine, Kaguya wasn't expecting this kindness at all, but she agreed as it would give her the chance to apologise to Keine again.

So Kaguya intended to keep this meeting short when Keine came over and she got into her car which was parked nearby.

As soon as Kaguya sat down, Keine apologised, something she deemed to be necessitated right away.

"I'm sorry, Kaguya".

This confounded the woman, "Why are you apologising?" she smiled, "You had nothing to do with me leaving Eientei".

"If only you knew the truth" Keine grimaced internally, "Perhaps, but I doubt our involvement made it easy for you".

"Don't say that. If anything, I'm sorry for ending it with you" Kaguya said quietly, "I should have known better".

"So, there was someone else?" Keine played along.

In reality, Keine felt rueful for her involvement in this because she could see that Kaguya really liked Eirin, and given Eirin's reaction, it may have been the same for her.

"There was, but it didn’t work out".

"May I ask why?".

Kaguya looked at Keine, the two sitting face to face in their seats, "She was in love with someone else".

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that" Keine said softly, "May I speak candidly?".

"You're still too formal at times," Kaguya chuckled, "Was that a historian thing?".

"That has been said on more than one occasion" Keine laughed wryly.

"It's cute. What did you want to say?".

"If this situation was a case of her being in love with someone else, then perhaps it is a good thing that everything came to light. I don't believe someone like you should be a second option, Kaguya".

"I'm not sure you would feel that way if you knew the truth about this" Kaguya revealed and looked away, "I won't deny that I was in the wrong either".

"Perhaps, but one cannot help who you fall for. I understand this" the other woman replied, "Especially if it is you".

Kaguya was stunned again by this compassion from someone she had essentially tossed away for a woman who was never guaranteed to be hers.

She could only tilt her head and look in wonder at Keine, "I don't deserve such kindness from you, Keine. What I did was unforgivable".

"Hardly. You let me down gently and with gentleness" Keine smiled, "I appreciated that much even if it did hurt".

"Is there a way that I can make it up to you?".

Kaguya would do anything to at least right one of her wrongs, hoping to subside some of the agony she had caused.

"How about we start again? We leave what has happened in the past and try this with a clean slate?".

"You would really want to do that?".

Keine reached out and held Kaguya's hand in hers, similar brown eyes watching on with amazement and a tinge of nervousness.

"Of course, Kaguya".

It wasn't just Kaguya who wanted to right her wrongs.

Unbeknownst to the duo in the car, they weren't alone, the now darkened early autumn skies offering cover.

Observing the tender scene of the reconciliation was none other than Yukari whom was parked a distance away, hidden by other vehicles.

"Well, this is an interesting development".

The smirk on her lips was minatory as she watched the two share an embrace, simply content to be in each other's arms.

This made Yukari's life easier as she was concerned that Kaguya wouldn't release Eirin from her grasps. She had been keeping an eye on Kaguya's whereabouts to ensure that she wasn't anywhere near her wife, but it appeared that Keine had taken care of the problem itself.

Still, Kaguya fascinated her.

"What is it about you that seems to lure these women towards you, hm?" she said to herself, "Eirin and Keine certainly have their similarities in their personalities, I won't deny that. But to ensnare my wife, as well as Keine?".

Yukari had held Kaguya in high esteem and would have continued to do so if she hadn't had an affair with Eirin, so she knew what the woman's appeal was.

"It is almost commendable".

Commendable, but unforgivable due to the strain she had placed on her marriage.

With her reconnaissance done, Yukari reversed out and left the vicinity to made her way home.

Meanwhile, Kaguya had invited Keine back to the apartment since they didn’t want to wrap up the conversation just yet.

Of getting to know each other again.

"Everyone is still hoping for you to return".

They were in the kitchen, preparing tea together, the atmosphere feeling normal and Kaguya missed this.

She turned back and smiled at Keine, "Including you?".

"Well, it did brighten up my day whenever I saw you" Keine replied, all bashful, "So, yes, including me".

Kaguya was touched by this admission and walked over to the woman who was about to move their cups into the living area, but she stopped her when she placed her hand on Keine's arm.

Worried that she had said something wrong, Keine reached out and put her other hand on Kaguya's shoulder.

"Hey, what is it? Did I say something?".

"No, no" Kaguya quickly reassured and looked up at Keine, "Perhaps I'm overwhelmed, but I didn't expect anything to turn out like this".

"That makes sense. A lot has happened, Kaguya, so it will take some time to process this. And it is something you don't have to go through alone, okay?".

Again, the warmth Keine was offering so freely and without a catch engulfed Kaguya.

Being the other woman left out the pivotal parts of a relationship beyond the sex, and that was what Keine was offering by trying this with her again.

Kaguya smiled up at the other woman before wrapping her arms around Keine's waist, her head faced sideways over the woman's chest whilst Keine's arms were secured behind her back.

It may take time to undone the remnant feelings of Eirin, but Kaguya knew it wasn't impossible, not with Keine by her side

***

When Yukari had returned home that night after leaving Kaguya's, Eirin couldn't deduce her mood.

They were still having to tiptoe around each other as Eirin worked on obtaining the blonde's trust again.

"Where have you been?" she asked after Yukari entered the living area.

She was sat in the armchair and reading a book, taking off her glasses whilst following Yukari's movements.

The question made Yukari chuckle in a sardonic manner, "Are you concerned I would be sneaking around with another woman, darling? I believe that is your territory".

Eirin placed the book down and stood up, walking over to the sofa where Yukari had sat down, "Is this how it is going to be now? You are going to hold this over my head and throw such asperity in everything you say to me?".

Violet eyes stared up at Eirin suddenly, "Do you regret it?".

It was something Yukari hadn't actually asked her.

Maybe she would have hesitated a month ago, when the height of her feelings for Kaguya were constantly reaching a pinnacle, but Eirin had remembered what the bigger picture was.

And it was her life with Yukari.

Kaguya had left a mark on her, this much was undeniable, but Yukari owned her in every sense of the word.

Eirin sighed and crouched down till her knees were on the carpet and she was eye level with Yukari.

She wrapped her arms around her waist and pulled her forward, seeing the violet eyes widen slightly.

"I do, Yukari".

Yukari's impression remained unreadable but she did grab Eirin's blouse in both hands, "Why Kaguya?".

"Please, it is irrelevant now".

"Was it the attention from a-".

Eirin frowned at the idea of needing validation from another woman and silenced that sentence by kissing her wife.

She wouldn't insult Kaguya, nor did she think so lowly of herself to need to chase other women for what Yukari gave her.

Yukari's muffled moan painted over her lips as they broke apart between the fervent kiss to breath.

"It had nothing to do with that, Yukari. I have only sought your eyes on me".

"You had an interesting way of showing that considering Kaguya" Yukari smirked, "What am I supposed to think?".

"That I made a mistake" the doctor replied and reached for the hem of Yukari's dress and pulled it up, eyes raking over Yukari's body, "That I lost sight for a moment".

Yukari was breathing slightly faster as she took in the way her wife was watching her before hooking her arms beneath her thighs to lift them up.

It compelled Yukari to pull apart Eirin's blouse, uncaring of the buttons hanging loose from the thread because there was no deception in that declaration. She wrapped her arms behind her wife's neck, their lips brushing over each other's while Eirin continued her assertions because she knew that Yukari was feeling vulnerable, and rightfully so.

"I love you" she whispered over Yukari's mouth, "Yukari.

The blonde felt Eirin's left hand pull down her underwear, just enough to trace her fingertips down the warm lips, parting them till Yukari gasped.

Eirin didn't look away, watching her lover's head tip back as she made love to her, making sure she could feel the authenticity of her words, till she was squeezing around her two fingers whilst moving her hips.

What happened with Kaguya was real, but fleeting.

And it was best left as that.

Yukari was trying to regain some semblance of thinking as her wife continued to twirl her fingers within her, so she took a chance and pushed Eirin down onto the floor, leaving her empty before reaching another orgasm.

But the frustration could wait.

Eirin breathed out as her back hit the floor and she watched the woman unzip her skirt, dragging it down while her blouse remained parted to show her body.

"Yukari?" she called out, "Look at me".

"I have always been looking at you, and I always will".

Yukari moved onto her knees till she could mount Eirin, pressing down till their hips met and the doctor hissed whilst gripping her thighs, both women aroused enough to feel everything.

She then leaned down and placed her arms on either side of Eirin's head, her blonde hair falling aside whilst Eirin held her back.

"I want to know one more thing before I start to forgive you".

Eirin waited, willingly accepting it without hearing it.

"Did you say these words to her, Eirin?" Yukari asked, "Did you tell her you love her?".

Reaching for the nape of Yukari's neck while her other hand rested on Yukari's hip to pull her down, Eirin answered with certainty.

"No" she said, "Only you can make me say those words".

Yukari stared longingly at the woman under her, bearing her heart in a way which made her yield to the touch, to the sentiments.

"I love you".

Moving a hand down to grip Eirin's thigh, Yukari exhaled as she began to move, "Say it again".

So Eirin did say it, over and over when Yukari asked as their bodies melded over each other's, till their skin was shimmering under the lights and Yukari's knees burned.

Eirin didn't let her wife go when she eventually lost the strength in her legs and collapsed onto her.

Her lips were close to Yukari's ears as their breathing covered every inch of the room, indicative of the sheer ardent love they had made.

And before Yukari lost consciousness, she heard Eirin say it once more.

I love you.

The midday had enveloped the prefecture as the season was showing the starting signs of shifting to autumn.

Kaguya and Keine had strengthened their relationship, rekindling it without the burden of what had happened at Eientei which was made easier when Keine quit soon after.

She had returned to her teaching profession and was currently showing Kaguya around the school, the two heading outside again.

"It would have been a shame to see this place close" Kaguya commented, "I'm relieved that the councillors changed their mind".

Due to Yukari, but Keine tried not to think about that.

Instead, she smiled at the woman who had her arms around her arm as they walked outside the gates.

"Likewise" she replied, "There were many relying on this school, especially the children. They were all delighted when we gave them the news".

"Of course, they get to be taught by the best teacher there is".

Kaguya grinned at her lover and relished in her blush, "You are biased".

"I speak the truth" the woman replied and leaned up, kissing her cheek quickly, "I mean, she teaches me well enough".

Kaguya's penchant for teasing her had reared fully and Keine was both elated and mortified by it, especially when they were in public.

"Your ears are turning red".

Keine moved her lover's hand away as they laughed whilst approaching their car parked on the road which led to the town court.

"Did I leave my keys in your bag, Kaguya?" Keine asked, patting her jacket down, "I can't seem to find them".

"You did, along with a textbook" she smirked, "Here".

Keine chuckled as they reached her car, "What do you want to do for dinner? I was thinking of making stew. We should invite Alice and Reimu over too, don't you think?".

When Kaguya didn't respond, she looked at the woman by her side, noticing how pale she had gotten.

Keine reached for her, "Hey, what is it, Kaguya?" she asked, "Kaguya?".

Everything would make sense when Keine looked across to see what Kaguya was staring so intently at.

The alarm bells rang in her head and she wanted to open the door and quickly guide Kaguya inside, driving her away from what could be a potentially disastrous altercation.

Walking down the pathway connecting to the entrance of the court, Eirin and Yukari were heading their way.

They had already seen each other so there was no ignoring Yukari's casual wave and Eirin's weary look.

What was more concerning was the smile on Yukari's lips; there was nothing warm about it and the circuitous ways she operated would come into play

Both Kaguya and Keine felt the chilling sensation of their nerves being frozen over.

Eirin wanted to lead Yukari away but there was no point in even attempting to dissuade her.

Once Yukari had her sights set on you, you were freed only when she decides.

All Eirin could do was hope that this conversation would be brief as she looked at Kaguya.

"Well, isn't this a lovely surprise. Keine, Kaguya, I hope you have been well?".

Keine kept Kaguya's hand in hers, "Yes. We would love to stay and chat but we have elsewhere to be".

"Ah, how unfortunate, isn't that so, darling?" Yukari said to Eirin, "It has been a while".

"Agreed. We also have somewhere to be, Yukari. Let's go".

Kaguya was shaken out of her stupor when she realised something about Yukari's greeting.

"Wait".

"What's wrong?" Keine asked.

"How does Yukari know you, Keine?".

Yukari's smirk was cutting through Keine as they locked eyes but Eirin spoke up, "She was a research assistant at Yukari's firm. Yukari recommended her to work at Eientei given her skills".

This confirmed to Keine that Eirin didn't know the truth, but all was about to be revealed.

"Well, that is not entirely true".

"What do you mean, Yukari?".

"Not to worry, she did have the credentials to work for you" the lawyer explained, her arms relaxed at her side, "But Keine was not working for me either. You could say that she was my client".

Kaguya looked at Keine again, noting how tightly she was gripping her hand, "Keine..what is she talking about?".

Eirin realised that Yukari had been waiting for this exact moment and was powerless to stop it.

Her wife kept her gaze on Kaguya.

"Keine was the one who told me about you and Eirin" she explained, "In exchange for my services to save this school, Keine pretended to be interested in you to gather intel for me".

Time seemed to slow as the revelation hammered home for Kaguya and Eirin.

"So, by having Eirin hire her as a favour to me, I was made vividly aware of the affair you had been having with my wife. Judging by your expression, I take it Keine didn't reveal any of this to you?".

The hand in Keine's was shaken free as brown eyes looked up at Keine whilst Eirin couldn't stop staring at Yukari.

This was Yukari's forte; not only winning, but ruining anyone who got in her way.

"Is..this true, Keine?".

"Kaguya, I can explain!".

Kaguya stood away since that was an answer in itself, but Keine tried to reach for her.

It would be in vain because Kaguya rejected her advances.

Yukari took Eirin's hand, "We should leave the couple to talk" she smiled, "Shall we head home, Eirin?".

Kaguya's tears were spilling as she glanced between Eirin, Keine and Yukari, not knowing how to process this.

Her world had be shattered by Yukari's machinations and there was nothing she could do as Keine held her shoulders, urging with her to give her a chance to explain.

The damage had been done and Eirin was lead away, the sound of Kaguya's heartbroken sobs and Keine's desperate pleading fading.

As she and Yukari approached their car, Yukari made her way to the passenger side and smirked at her wife before getting in.

Eirin should have known, Yukari never left any stones unturned, or unscathed.

Notes:

In true Yukari fashion, it ends with her taking somebody out

The symbolism of the moonflower is quite contradictory, but in the context of this piece and those involved (all part of IN, might I add), it denotes to intuition, mysteries of the night, feminine energy and danger..rather apropos, no?

They also only bloom at night, so a metaphor for Kaguya's relationship with Eirin and Keine, beautiful but ephemeral

I digress, this piece was longer than intended but it's over now 🤷‍♀️
