Chapter Text
“There’s the island, you guys!” Nami looks up from her cartography table at the cry from the crow’s nest. As she steps out onto the deck to see, the crew moves around her with practiced precision as they ready the ship to land. Robin turns and greets her with a smile.
“I think I know this island, Nami.” She uses a hand to shield her eyes as she looks ahead, the ocean breeze tousling her hair. “I believe it’s known as the ‘Island of Sin.’”
Nami checks her map, curious. “It says here it’s called Viveria. It’s a spring island.” As she looks up, it’s apparent that this is a heavily populated island, and she’s happy to see civilization. The ship is in dire need of supplies, and everyone has cabin fever. They’d been at sea for almost a month now, stopping every now and then at small, unpopulated islands. The journey through the Grand Line isn’t easy, but everyone has the same goal- they’re just far, far less motivated when all they have to eat is fish and tangerines. And that’s not to say it isn’t good, but Sanji has run out of most of his best spices.
“Yes, I’ve heard of this place too,” Jinbei calls from the helm. “We’ll have to be on our guard, it’s frequented by criminals and pirates alike. Just look at the other boats in the harbor!”
Nami turns, and the dozens of ships moored are clearly pirate ships, each flying Jolly Rodgers of various designs.
“This should be fun!” Luffy jumps down from the crow’s nest and slings his arm around Nami. “How much money can I have for food?” She rolls her eyes and hands him the pouch containing his allowance. As the ship’s navigator and treasurer, accountant, financier and overall badass, she has everyone’s allowance. If she let them spend whatever they want, the crew would go completely broke every time they entered a restaurant! Sanji strolls over casually, and holds out his hand.
“Have you factored in the money we need for the kitchen,” he says, “Spices aren’t cheap! I want to make sure we have the best for you~”
Nami and Robin both roll their eyes. “Yeah, but if you spend it on stupid shit I’m going to beat you to death.” She plops the heavier bag into his hand.
As the boys secure the ship, Nami and Robin step out onto the dock. It’s crowded with people from all over the world, hauling boxes, bags, and barrels. “I wonder where we can find a map of the city,” Robin wonders, “It seems really easy to get lost here.” Nami shrugs, examining a sign at the end of the walkway.
“What the heck are these signs?” The rest of the crew joins them, and Nami hands out the rest of her money purses as Usopp and Robin examine them.
“Aren’t these the names of sins?,” remarks Usopp, rubbing his chin. “Pride, Gluttony, Greed…”
“Hello!” The crew turns to face a cheery voiced woman. “Are you tourists?”
“We’re pirates!” Luffy shoves his way to the front of the group. The woman smiles wider, and reaches into her pocket.
“Well, then you’ll want one of these.” She hands Luffy a pamphlet. “This way, you know where all the fun is!” She tosses her hair and pouts seductively at him. “I work at Fuzzy Feelings, you should come see me, cutie~”
“What’s that? Do they serve cotton candy?” She narrows her eyes at him, confused. Sanji shoves him aside, and takes her hand in his, kissing it.
“Ignore him, lovely, he’s a moron. Of course I’ll come visit you,” he croons, and the crew rolls their eyes. She giggles.
Zoro crosses his arms. “Can we go?”
Sanji shoots him a look that could kill, then turns his full attention on the woman. “I’ll see you shortly, my lady,” he gives her hand a final kiss and waves goodbye. Nami snatches the map out of Luffy’s hand and opens it with a snap.
“Okay, so the city is divided into 7 boroughs. We’re standing in front of Lust, which seems to be the center. Then there’s-” she points in each direction, “Gluttony, Sloth, Greed, Wrath, Pride and Envy.” She looks at the crew, who are all looking in different directions. “What do you say we all meet up back on the ship tonight? We can do our shopping and look around and be out of here by tomorrow.”
“Where are you going first, Nami?,” asks Chopper. She looks around at the city, and the gleaming buildings in Greed catch her eye.
“That one,” she points. “I think that roof is made of gold! There might be treasure!” Robin chuckles.
“Chopper, why don’t you accompany me to Sloth? I can see a beach from here.” Chopper beams, and the pair head off to the west.
“I smell meat,” Luffy interjects, pointing east. Sanji checks the map.
“That’s Gluttony. I’ll bet I can find ingredients there!” Sanji follows Luffy as he dashes off.
“Do you think there’s weapons in Wrath, Franky?” Usopp squints at the map.
“I hope so, we need ammo!” Franky smacks Usopp on the back, nearly knocking him over. “Good call! Let’s go!” Nami turns to Jinbei, who hasn’t said anything.
“Oh, no exploration for me,” he says, holding up his hands. “Someone needs to watch the ship!” Nami nods.
“I’ll make sure to bring you a good souvenir!” She smiles, giving a thumbs up.
“I’ll stay too, Jinbei,” says Brook. “Leave the ship to the old men!”
Zoro is the last to speak up. "I'm just gonna wander. See where the wind takes me." Nami rolls her eyes.
"Here, take the map. If we don't see you in 48 hours, we'll come looking." She sticks out her tongue at him teasingly. "God forbid you end up stuck in a chimney. Again." Zoro snatches the map and stomps off, making her giggle.
And with that, the crew goes their separate ways, scattering into the infamous City of Sin. Little did they know that below the gleaming city lies a foundation that’s rotten to the core.
