Another Reason

Summary:

[3x16]When Barry asked Iris for some time. There was another reason besides the one he said... There was always another reason.

Work Text:

Barry was restless while waiting for someone to open the door. He had been running and running in circles, over and over again. Until he decided to stand in front of that door and ring the doorbell.

"What are you doing here?" Caitlin asked the moment she opened the door and saw him at that hour of the night.

"I asked Iris for some time," he said the words in a hurried way. Caitlin was surprised. "Can I come in?" He asked nervously, as the movement of his hands showed.

"Y-yes, of course," she made a gesture for him to enter.

When he came in, Caitlin kept staring at his back. She cleared her throat and spoke.

"Barry..." she called him. "Why are you telling me this? Do you want to sleep here?"

"Because you are the reason. The speed force was right. I always have other reasons."

"Barry?" She said, confused. "What do you mean?"

He let out a long sigh and sat on the couch. Supporting his elbows on his knees, while his intertwined hands rested on his forehead.

"My future is with Iris."

"Yes," Caitlin articulated, seeing that he did not continue speaking after saying that sentence.

"And what if I don't want that future? What if I want to change it?" His intertwined hands moved and were placed under his chin, looking into her eyes. "I've modified so many things, molding them and breaking them," his face contorted. "Cisco's brother's death, your powers Caitlin..." he swallowed. "I created Flashpoint, a new reality."

The accused just stared at him.

"It's normal that you don't let her die even if the future marks that," she articulated after a long silence that had formed.

"I'm not talking about that. Of course I'm going to save her," he cleared his throat. "What I'm saying is to modify my future with Iris. I-what I mean is to no longer be a part of it."

"But... why would you want that?" She rebutted, not understanding. "D-don't you love Iris?" Her eyes widened at that possibility.

"Yes, I love her..." his eyes looked at the doctor's with intensity. "But, not like I love you."

"B-ba..."

"I realized that the love I feel for her, during all this time its intensity has diminished and in the end, no matter how many times I said I loved Iris because when I saw Ronnie and you in the speed force, I didn't even believe my own words anymore..."

He brushed his hair with his hands.

"You were with your daughter, in your arms..." Caitlin watched him with mixed emotions. "She was beautiful and at that moment I wanted her to be mine, ours."

He began to approach the doctor, whose cheeks turned red.

"So it didn't matter how much I tried to run away from you, in the end, I couldn't help but run to you."

Their faces were face to face.

"That's why I asked Iris for some time because I can no longer hide what I feel for you. You are the reason why I am willing to change everything. I plan to save her, but I don't want to build my future with her, but with you," he grabbed her hands that were cold. "Do you want to change it with me? Do you want to be part of my future?"

Caitlin looked at the hands Barry had taken, which were warming up, and she smiled. Before kissing him, before joining her lips with his and expressing what she had long kept in her heart.

"For a speedster, you're very slow," she said, separating from his lips as Barry smiled. "I've always wanted to be part of your future, although there came a time when I convinced myself it was impossible..." she swallowed. "So... are you sure?"

"Yes, I am," he stated without a doubt, while his eyes looked at her intently. Then they lowered to her lips, approaching again to join them with hers, but before that happened, he said, "By the way Caitlin, yes I do want to sleep here."

And meanwhile, she acquired a slight blush on her pale cheeks, Barry - this time - quickly kissed her again.
