Work Text:
“Uggh. Why did we agree to do this again?” Mika complained for what Jules told her was the tenth time but Mika herself was certain it was the only the third.
“Because when we signed up for this job, we signed up for the fact that we may find ourselves in unprecedented and dangerous times ahead, and our own weapons are our determination to endure,” Jules replied in a mocking deep voice as if she was the narrator of an action movie.
Mika stared at her, giving Jules her own mocking glare and tried not to think about how beautiful Jules was, or how hot her voice was when it got deep. “Shut up.”
“Come on,” Jules teased her. “That was pretty good.”
“I don’t know how you’re so calm about this!” Mika looked at her incredulously. “You know that Kwan’s going to be a nightmare tonight. The only one of us who was able to get in on Beltran’s surgery today, you know he’s going to be boasting about it all night.”
“When was the last time Blue didn’t boast about something?” Jules shrugged her shoulders. “I’m just mentally preparing myself for him going on and on about his ‘triumph’, you just get used to it.”
“Well, why don’t we make it interesting then?” Mika suggested coyly, turning to face Jules fully just as they were about to enter Joes.
“What do you recommend?” Jules asked, her interest fully peaked.
“Every time Blue says the word ‘triumph’, we each have to take a sip.” She pulled out a nondescript, silver-coloured flask from her jacket and held it in front of Jules.
“Mika,” Jules said incredulously, a grin growing on her face. “Is that your special gin from home?”
“Right in one,” Mika grinned slyly at her. This came from home, her grandfather’s speciality. All of her siblings past the age of 18 had a bottle of it to share it with someone they deeply trusted. “You wanted to try it, right? Perfect time,” Mika shook the flask suggestively.
Jules eyed the flask wearily. Mika softened her stance. “You don’t have to if you don’t want to…
Jules sighed. “Fine. But only because it’s the only way we’ll tolerate tonight.”
“That’s the spirit,” Mika said, smiling encouragingly at her. She uncapped the flask and took a quick swig before hiding it behind her back, knowing the people in Joes’ wouldn’t be so accepting of their customers bringing their own drinks inside.
And with that, the two shook each other’s hand with the seriousness of soldiers about to walk into battle before opening the doors. They spotted their friends immediately. Simone already looked exhausted while Lucas kept glaring at their table. Meanwhile, Blue was in full spirits, an already unbearable grin on his face.
“Ah, welcome my friends,” he declared dramatically as he saw Jules and Mika enter. “Now’s the time to hear about my triumph.”
Jules groaned and reached for the flask behind Mika’s back to drink it.
It was either going to be a very short night, or the longest night in ages.
---
“And that’s why I think you’re the cutest,” Jules mumbled as she gently tapped the end of Mika’s nose. She was draped on Mika’s shoulder, woozy and barely able to stand upright.
“Uh huh,” Mika replied absent-mindedly, still finding her girlfriend in this drunk state being really adorable, but now she was too preoccupied with finding her keys. When she realised that Jules cannot handle her drink (which was rather the surprise), Mika secretly gave up the challenge so she can make sure that Jules would be able to get home safely. It meant she had to stay sober while Blue was on his ego trip, but she reminded herself that the drunken Jules was her priority.
Her hands dug around her pockets, searching through gum wrappers, tissues, and spare coins. Her fingers felt the familiar metallic, piercing keys and latched onto it, pulling them out of the chaotic pit.
“It also doesn’t hurt that you’ve got the cutest legs,” Jules babbled on, her professionalism long forgotten as she poked Mika’s arm, nowhere near her legs. Mika looked at her bemusedly before she realised she dropped her keys to stop Jules’ limp body from crashing onto the ground. The keys landed on the pavement with a clank.
Mika sighed. Out of both of them, Mika never thought she had to be the one looking after the other after a drunken night out but there they were. “Okay, here’s what we’re going to do.” She set Jules down gently on the grass on the front lawn. Jules let out a meek, heart-wrenching whimper, reaching for Mika with her arms.
“Just one second baby,” Mika assured her, patting her on the head while picking up the keys. Jules groaned and drooped her head, letting it swing lifelessly between her shoulders. Mika forced the key into the doorknob, wrestling with its rotations. The lock finally gave way and Mika quickly opened it. That was one silver lining, she knew, that Simone and Lucas were staying the night at her dad’s, because this way, they had the house to themselves and Jules didn’t have to deal with the indignation of going home to Max while drunk. She looked back at Jules, who had started giggling out of nowhere and picking away at the grass surrounding her.
Mika snorted before taking off her suit jacket and throwing it inside where it (hopefully) landed anywhere but the floor. By the time she returned to her girlfriend, she took to gently throwing grass at her own jacket. She took Jules’ outstretched arms and pulled her to her feet, as Jules gave an incredibly happy sound. “Yeaaahhh!” Jules squealed between hiccups as she wrapped an arm around Mika’s neck and rested her head against her shoulder.
Mika could feel the heat of Jules’ burning cheeks through her shirt and feel a bit of drool land on her shoe. Mika slowly walked into their home, kicking the door shut behind her. She gently dropped Jules on the couch which thankfully was the closest thing to the door. Jules flopped against the couch cushions and closed her eyes. Her breath slowed as she began drifting off.
Mika made sure to lock the door behind her before quickly sit down next to Jules. “Jules? Jules, baby?”, she gently ushered Jules, who was happy to rest on the couch, letting the loose grass fall on the couch. “You need to get changed.”
Jules opened her eyes, and looked straight at the table in front of them. “No,” she mumbled, as if it was that simple.
“Jules, don’t get me wrong, you’re adorable like this, you have grass stains and drool on your clothes. And I think you’ll be more comfortable in something else.” She reached for the edge of Jules’ jacket, but Jules suddenly grabbed onto it, pulling it closer to her.
“Noooo,” Jules said, sounding as serious as one could while as drunk on gin.
“Jules, come on,” Mika urged, trying to pull Jules’s hands back.
“No, back off,” Jules’s voice was rising. “I have a girlfriend! Leave me alone!”
“Okay, okay,” she assured Jules, “I’m not gonna do anything.” Mika just abandoned her efforts and sat back down on the couch next to her.
“My girlfriend will beat you up.” Jules slurred her warning. “She’s a doctor, she knows what b… bones to hurt,” she added in a cocky voice.
Mika chuckled. “Yes ma’am,” she said, giving her a salute as if Jules wasn’t giving her compliments about her legs a minute ago.
“But, why don’t we get you to bed first, huh? That way, you won’t be waiting on an couch for your… girlfriend.” It was a struggle now not to laugh.
Mika watched her partner struggle with the choice. Jules’ flushed cheeks fluttered as she breathed out her mouth. Her pony tail swayed back and forth as her head bobbed up and down.
In a more playful voice, Mika tried again. “Hey Jules?”
“Fine,” Jules said at last. “But don’t you dare try anything stupid. I’m a doctor too.”
Mika laughed again. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”
~~~
“Oooohh…”
Mika walked into the bed with two cups of coffee, a grin on her face when she saw the state of her girlfriend, laying sideways on the bed, her hand resting on her forehead.
“Looks like you need this,” Mika offered, holding up a cup and placing it on the counter next to Jules’ head.
“Thankss…” Jules mumbled, burrowing into her pillow. “I need it before… before…”
Suddenly, she shot out of the bed, a hand still on her forehead. Mika saw her wince at the sunlight coming from the window but even as she groaned, Jules was making efforts to get out of the bed.
“Mika! I gotta get dressed! We’re late for work!”
Mika rolled her eyes fondly and pulled out some pills. “Here’s some aspirin. Also it’s a Saturday.”
Jules looked at her with squinted eyes in confusion before realisation dawned on her. “Oh…” she mumbled before falling back onto the bed. “Thanks,” she said in a quiet, embarrassed voice.
Mika mumbled in acknowledgement.
Jules reached for medicine and the water, taking both before laying back down on the bed. She closed her eyes. “I remember now… we were out… Blue was celebrating the… the thing…”
“Do you remember the gin?” Mika asked her dryly.
Jules looked at her so lost before her eyes widened. “Oh no…”she groaned before collapsing on the bed again. “What did you do to me?”
Mika laughed. “Obviously, gin’s not for you. You’re going to be feeling it for at least a few more hours. Don’t try and be a hero, you’ll never feel this bad again,” Mika reassured her, kissing her on top of her head.
“Mmmm,” Jules mumbled against the pillow, yet Mika’s heart soared the way Jules’ curled up tighter at the kiss.
She laid down on the bed next to her, listening to Jules snore lightly against the pillow, Mika staring at the window and see the daylight shine through.
“Mika?”
“Mhm?” Mika hummed gently.
“…where did the grass come from?”
Mika lost the fight with her giggles.
