SU: Poke-Verse AU Ep. 27: A New World Order

Summary:

Steven returns to Earth, without Sylveon. However, Sylveon's egg soon hatches and Steven's got a new Eevee to look after.

But he soon discovers that a lot of changes have happened since he was gone. The Pokemon Association is now, The Pokemon World Government!

They aim to keep the world safer, but they seem a bit authoritarian about it. Greg can't believe Red, the world government president, has become like this.

Could Steven get to the bottom of this?

Chapter 1: Goodbye Sylveon, Hello Eevee.

Chapter Text

Steven explained what had transpired on Homeworld. Even the sad parts. Connie put her hand on Steven's shoulder in sympathy because of Sylveon's loss.

"Steven, I'm so sorry about Sylveon" said Pearl. "I'm going to miss him asking me for treats" Garnet lamented sadly.

"Well, it's not like his Pokemon's dead" said Rika. Steven and The Gems glared at her angrily.

"Whoops...guess I can't read the room...anyway...I need to make a report to Champion Geeta in Paldea. She and the other members of the M9 need to know about what has happened" said Rika

The Gems and Connie looked at each other awkwardly.

"What now?" asked Rika. Pearl took her phone and played Tube-Tube footage of the news. The headline read "Public cheers in support of World Government."

"In response to public demand, and increasing pressure from one of the world's Top Ranked Trainer's Red of Pallet Town, an election was called for a reform to The Pokemon association into a full world government" The newscaster announced.

"No...they didn't!" asked Rika "How long were me and Steven on Homeworld!" "It's only been a day" said Amethyst. "There's an election being called for the first president of the world" said Connie.

"Current polls show that Red is the shoo in for a landslide victory" The newscaster continued.

It then cut to Red on a podium "Gemkind has proven itself an immediate threat to our planet. They think of us humans and the Pokemon we share the world with as nothing more than inferior creatures! And the M9's administration has taken this issue lightly! Although their technology may be eons ahead of us, we must stand firm and show them that our world is not to be trifled with!"

"This is...this is insane" said Rika "now I really got to get back home. I'm sorry, but I better get home." Rika bowed and dashed out the door in immediate fright.

"Oh goodness! Look at the time! Connie should be getting home, and you, you probably need rest more than anyone right now" said Pearl.

"I'll walk you to the station" Steven offered. Steven and Connie left the house and made their way to the station.

As soon as they were out of sight of the house, Connie suddenly hugged him. "It's good to have you back...thanks for keeping your promise" she said, holding back tears.

"It's great to be back...I just wish Sylveon could have come with me" said Steven "I mean, I know he's alive, but still...he's stuck on Homeworld..."

"Well, Sylveon's a pretty smart Pokemon. I'm sure if you can find a way off Homeworld, he can" said Connie.

"Yeah. Sylveon's even managed to outsmart Garnet back when he was an Eevee" said Steven laughed slightly. "Oh! Steven! You're back!" said Greg.

"Dad!" said Steven running over to give his father a hug. "Hey, I kept my promise, here's Sylveon's egg! Say, where is Sylveon, anyway?" asked Greg.

Steven felt awkward telling Greg what happened but told him anyway. Greg was mortified, Sylveon had been like a second son to Greg, even if Sylveon was just a Pokemon.

"Steven...I...come here" Greg hugged Steven tight "are you...are you going to be okay?" "I promised to look after his egg, I'm gonna need to be strong for the new Eevee inside it" said Steven.

Greg nodded "Yeah, I hear ya...well, if you need to talk about it...you know you've got me" said Greg. Steven nodded and continued to escort Connie back to the Subway station.

"Thanks for walking me all the way over...I'll talk to you tomorrow" said Connie. "Heh, you know...we could have taken Pyroar to your place, he could have warped you there instantly" Steven joked, trying to ease his mind.

"I know...but I wanted to spend a little more time with you before I left" said Connie. The two waved goodbye as Connie made her way home.

Steven returned home with Sylveon's egg in tow. He brushed his teeth, changed into his pajamas and got to bed, putting Sylveon's egg next to him so he could keep it warm.

"It's...just not the same without you..." said Steven, when suddenly, he felt a rumbling from the egg.

"Wait! Could it be?" asked Steven. He saw cracks forming on the shell. "Yes! Yes!" Steven said with sudden excitement "that's right, come on out, come on out!" he said in a silent but encouraging tone.

The eggshell cracked more and more as the egg continued to wiggle "You got it! Push! Push! You're nearly there!" The egg burst right open and a newly hatched Eevee came rolling out of it...with the top of the eggshell still on it's head, covering its eyes.

The newly hatched Eevee, with the tip of its tongue sticking out of its mouth looked around, with the eggshell still covering its eyes. "Hold on, I got that!" Steven removed the eggshell from Eevee's face.

Eevee looked around again, the tip of its tongue still sticking out and then noticed Steven "Eev! Eevee!" It cried happily, its tail suddenly wagging rapidly.

"Hey there, Eevee, I'm Steven...your Dad, Sylveon, I promised him I'd take care of you. He was actually looking forward to being a dad actually, but right now, he can't be there for you...but I'm here! And one day, I'll take you to meet him. So, I hope we can get along..." said Steven, as he began to tear up talking to the hatchling.

Eevee hopped right onto Steven and Steven wrapped his arms around it "Welcome to the world, Eevee..."

Chapter 2: Well, I'll be an Eevee's Uncle!

Chapter Text

Steven woke up with a big yawn when suddenly he felt a squeaking on the bed. Eevee and Terapagos were both bouncing up and down.

"Guess you two are starving, alright, time to for your breakfast" said Steven. The two Pokemon scurried downstairs, Eevee running faster than Terapagos.

Steven still missed Sylveon but, the newly hatched Eevee seemed make him feel a little less sad. He was prepping the Pokemon food as his smallest Pokemon were hopping up and down all around him.

"Calm down, calm down, I've got your food" Steven said with a giggle as he placed the bowls down. Terapagos and Eevee eagerly began eating.

Steven noticed something while Eevee ate though, it was eating rather sloppily like Sylveon did. "You really are Sylveon's kid" He commented with a giggle.

Eevee looked up at Steven with the tip of its tongue sticking out and tilting its head. Steven couldn't get over how cute little Eevee was, he went to pet it but it growled at Steven, protecting its food bowl.

Steven backed up "Gotcha! Don't want to be disturbed when you're eating!" He heard the door to the Temple Open. "Mornin' Steven" Amethyst mumbled "Huh? Hey! Sylveon's egg hatched!"

"Yeah, you three were in your rooms when it hatched. This is Sylveon's daughter!" Steven introduced. "That's great! Hey there little Eevee!" Amethyst said in a cutesy voice.

Eevee growled at Amethyst. "Uh, she doesn't like someone disturbing her when she eats" Steven warned. "Aw, what's a matter, don't you want to share with dear old Auntie Amethyst?" Amethyst teased Eevee.

But the newly hatched Pokemon was having none of it, headbutting Amethyst directly on her forehead "Yow! You little!" "Keeeshishishi!" Amethyst's Zoroark cackled as it raided the fridge for some eggs.

"Yeah, how would you like to get a headbutt?" asked Amethyst. Zoroark shrugged as he ate the egg whole. "So, you going to train it to battle?" asked Amethyst.

"I think so, I'll get a start on it this afternoon, battle her against some of the lower level Pokemon in the area" said Steven.

"So, since you always thought of Sylveon as your brother, would that make you that Eevee's Uncle?" asked Amethyst. Steven paused and thought for a moment "Yeah, I guess it would. Heh "Uncle Steven" that's got a nice ring to it!"

"Well, whatevs, I'm going to get myself a donut" said Amethyst. Just then, he got a call on his Rotom Phone from Connie.

"Hey, Steven, how are you holding up?" she asked. "Well, it felt lonely but...Sylveon's egg hatched as soon as I got home" said Steven.

"It did!? Can I see?" asked Connie. Steven aimed the camera towards Eevee who was looking towards the camera with curiosity, it hopped up on the counter and began sniffing the phone screen.

"Eevee, this is Connie" Steven introduced. "Eev! Eevee!" Eevee greeted. "Aw, you're adorable! Look at you and your little tongue!" Connie cooed.

"If you feel like coming over and meeting her, be my guest" Steven invited. "Yeah! I can come by this afternoon!" Connie agreed, ending the conversation.

Steven smiled and looked at his phone, when he noticed the video his mom recorded on it. "That's right! The message Mom left for Pearl! I need to show her!" said Steven.

"Show who what?" asked Pearl who was right behind him. "Pearl, there's something I wanted to show you on my phone, but I never had the chance to show you" said Steven.

"Oh! It's not another Crying Breakfast Friends quiz, is it? Because I have no time for such trivial things" said Pearl. "No...it's something else, it's a video" said Steven.

Steven presented his phone to Pearl, and she saw the thumbnail. "Steven...this wouldn't be one of those AI videos I've been hearing so much about, because if it is...it's in poor taste" said Pearl.

"No, this is real. I went to this strange lake in Kitakami with Terapagos and it summoned up this mist and...I don't know how, but Mom was there from the past...even if temporarily!" said Steven.

"I did remember hearing legends from the local humans there long ago about how the spirits of those long past come back from the past in the Crystal Pool up there, but I thought that was a legend" said Pearl "who'd have thought it was true! I mean, humans were so superstitious back then!"

"Well...here it is" Steven pressed a button on his phone screen and the video started playing.

Rose's face appeared on screen and she looked serious "Pearl, I understand how I'm here in the future, but I don't have enough time to be explicitly clear but...Pearl, I rescind my last order to you as my original self."

Pearl was in total silence. "Uh...what did she mean, Pearl?" asked Steven. "Steven...there's something I have to tell you...I have to tell everyone."

Chapter 3: The Secret

Chapter Text

Pearl had Garnet, Bismuth and Amethyst gathered in the room. "Everyone, there is something I have to tell you" said Pearl "I have been silent on matters involving Pink Diamond, but you deserve to know why..."

Pearl was expecting to cover her own mouth as per her usual reflex...but this time, the reflex was gone. Rose's final orders have truly been rescinded!

"...before The Crystal Gems...before Rose...I was Pink Diamond's Pearl" she began. Steven, Amethyst and Garnet gasped.

"You...you were Pink Diamond's Pearl...I didn't even see this coming" said Garnet. "So...you were working with...like, The Diamond that made me? How did you manage to escape?" asked Amethyst.

"I didn't. Rose Quartz wasn't real...not a real quartz anyway. Rose..., Steven's Mother, she was another self that Pink Diamond had constructed" Pearl admitted.

"Another self she constructed? In other words...?" Amethyst asked. "Mom was Pink Diamond..." Steven cleared it up. "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!?" Connie and Greg, who were just standing at the door exclaimed.

"Hold up! You mean the gem that ruled Earth thousands of years ago, and the gem that rebelled against her were both the same gem!?" asked Connie.

"Connie! Dad! How long have you two been standing there?" asked Steven. "Since "Mom was Pink Diamond" said Connie.

"It always felt like Rose was trying to tell me something when we were together...guess this must have been it" said Greg.

"It makes sense when you think about it, a Pink Pyroar, a Pink Sword...when you think about it, the signs were all there!" said Amethyst.

"But wait! When I was on trial, there were witnesses! They saw Pink Diamond get shattered!" said Steven. "They only saw what we wanted them to see" said Pearl.

Pearl showed a projection of herself and Pink Diamond. She was very different from her Rose Quartz form, her hair was rather poofy, sort of like Steven's, she wore a more regal looking outfit.

And although she was much taller than Pearl, she was nowhere near as gargantuan as the other two Diamonds. She reached outside and took in a clump of dirt, which aligned with what the Eyeball Ruby testified.

Pink Diamond then squeezed the clump of dirt with all her might and when she released her grasp, the clumps of dirt had turned into Pink shards of glass.

Everyone present, except for Pearl all gasped in shock! And then audio from the memory played "Convincing?" Pink Diamond asked. "Very much so, My Diamond" Pearl's memory of herself answered uncomfortably.

Pink leaned forward "Soon it will be just "Rose"..." Pink then put the glass shards in her mouth. Pearl unsheathed Rose's Sword "Wait!" Pink interrupted "there's one last thing I need to do!"

Pearl put the sword back in "No one can ever find out we did this" Pink Diamond put Pearl's hands over her own mouth "So, for my last order to you as a Diamond, we must never speak of this again. No one can know."

Pearl ended the projection. "If those were her last orders to you, why are you disobeying them now?" asked Amethyst.

"I can answer that. Terapagos led me to The Crystal Pool in Kitakami" said Steven "apparently the spirits of those long past could be found there, and the legends were true! I saw Mom, back from when she was pregnant with me, she recorded a video message for Pearl, rescinding her last orders"

Bismuth kept thinking for a while but then picked up a cushion and screamed into it "Oh my stars! It...it all makes sense now! Guess she did listen to me, huh?"

"Wow...this is crazy, huh Garnet?" asked Amethyst. Garnet was muttering something, tensing her fists. Steven was familiar with that, this meant Ruby and Sapphire were fighting, and he believed he knew what it was about.

"Sapphire, please!" "No! She...she..." Garnet suddenly fell apart into Ruby and Sapphire. "Rose Quartz lied to us! She lied about everything! She held her hands and looked us right in the eyes and told us to never question who we are as Garnet! We never questioned ourselves or her!" Sapphire raged.

"Sapphire, we couldn't have known..." Ruby weakly argued. "No! You couldn't have known! You never know anything! That's what I'm for!" Sapphire argued.

"Sapphire..." Ruby tried to tell her. "But I never looked into her! I trusted her! I let her make fools of us all!" Sapphire dashed off to the warp pad leaving behind a trail of ice.

"Sapphire waaaait!" Ruby cried out in vain "please! We can stay calm and talk about this!" "Talk about what!? How our relationship was a lie!? What else is there to say!?" Sapphire fumed.

But it was too late, Sapphire had warped away. "Nooo! This can't be the end of my favorite power couple!" Bismuth cried out. "Biiiiiismuth!" Ruby ran towards Bismuth with open arms, requiring comfort.

Bismuth and Ruby were both crying and holding each other. "Yeesh, this is heavy...I don't know how to process this" said Greg. "There's more to this, isn't there, Pearl?" asked Connie.

"There is...maybe Sapphire should hear about it first" said Pearl. "Well, time's a-wasting!" said Steven. "C-Connie, wait!" said Bismuth. "Huh?" Connie looked to Bismuth.

"Tinkatuff...bring it in" Bismuth requested. Bismuth's Tinkatuff came in dragging along its bigger hammer in one hand, and holding a sword in another, one with a star on it hilt.

"We just finished it today" said Bismuth. "Yes! It's perfect!" said Connie. "What for?" asked Steven.

"When we were trying to come up with a plan to rescue you...Bismuth said that it's time I got my own sword, not just borrowing your mom's, no offense, and well, I thought it was a great idea. I thought when we saved you, I could do it in style" Connie embarrassingly admitted.

"Connie...you are the coolest girlfriend a guy could ask for" said Steven "now, let's go save Ruby and Sapphire's relationship!" "Right!" Connie nodded.

Chapter 4: Now We're Falling Apart

Chapter Text

Pearl, Steven, Connie and Bismuth all ran to the warp pad, warping to where Sapphire was, Rose's Fountain. And sure enough, there she was, surrounded by ice of her own creation.

"Sapphire!" Steven called out, running towards her but she blocked them by sending a blast of ice to halt him. "Hey! What gives!? It's me, Steven!" Steven called out.

"Everything we were running from, she was right there all along!" Sapphire cried "using us for her little war...looking at us with those...knowing eyes! Making me believe in a better future that I couldn't see because it wasn't real! And now here we are, our friends...shattered! And corrupted! Of course she was a diamond...what a long road she took to torture us like this..."

"Yeah, just like a diamond" said Bismuth. "Hey! Don't look at me! I'm not her, remember?" Steven reminded her. "And how do I know that, knowing what I know now?" Bismuth interrogated him.

Connie drew her sword and pointed it at Bismuth "Hey! He's telling the truth! Don't you dare lay a finger on him!"

"Oh! Gonna start a fight with me? Bring it on! I made that sword of yours and I can destroy it!" Bismuth threatened.

Bismuth's Tinkatuff got angry at her trainer and whacked her on the head with its hammer. "Hey! What was that for!?" asked Bismuth. Tinkatuff crossed its arms as if reminding her of something.

It was then that she remembered the first lesson she taught that Pokemon "To treat everything you make with respect and love, because that's how you make a good quality product!"

"It's not what you think" said Pearl "I wasn't finished explaining the truth. What you heard was the truth of Pink Diamond's shattering...not the truth behind why she became Rose Quartz."

"What happened?" asked Steven "I've had so many questions about my mom, and now that I have an answer, I have even more questions."

Pearl nodded "Yes, Bismuth, Sapphire...you listen too...here is what happened. I was given to Pink Diamond a few thousand years before she was given Earth. I was supposed to make her happy...I just never could."

*Thousands of years ago, Earth Colony Moonbase*

There was silence, Pink Diamond was at her command console, looking bored. Pearl stood next to her, ever patient. The two shared an awkward glance at each other from time to time, until Pink decided to speak.

"Could you imagine that running a colony would be this dull?" Pink asked rhetorically. "I could imagine it, if you would like me to, My Diamond" Pearl said in a robotic tone.

Pink gave her a look of disappointment, expecting to start up a conversation, not blind obedience. It had always been this way for Pink, not fitting in with the other Diamonds who were often too busy with their own duties, only spending time with her as a means of humoring her, and it's not like she could speak with other gems, it was always blind obedience with them...plus Pink wasn't allowed to fraternize with lesser gems anyway.

"Show me the status of the Prime Kindergarten" Pink ordered. "Yes, My Diamond" said Pearl as she placed her hand within the console, causing her eyes to go all bluescreen as her gem projected live feed of The Kindergarten.

"The first Quartzes are due to emerge soon" said Pearl. "Finally! Something exciting!" Pink commented in a jovial childlike tone as she rushed from her desk and leapt down to the second floor next to a floating orb.

Pearl was calmly going down the stairs as Pink Diamond excitedly ordered "Quick! Turn it on! Turn it on! I don't want to miss anything!" "Yes, My Diamond" said Pearl as she activated the orb and an immersive, realistic, projection of the Kindergarten materialized around them.

A light began to grow from within the rock walls "Look at this, Pearl, we're creating life from nothing!" A Quartz Soldier than burst from the ground.

"Welcome!" Pink excitedly greeted. But the quartz ran right through her, reminding her that she was within a hologram, as the quartz ran towards others.

"I wish I could be down there with them for just one day..." Pink lamented. "I could have us warped to the Kindergarten at once, My Diamond" Pearl suggested.

"What? Nononono! If I went down there to The Kindergarten, I'd never here the end of it from Yellow and Blue!" Pink cautioned her "But could you imagine me being down there, playing with The Quartzes!"

"Yes I could" Pearl conjured up a hologram of Pink chatting and laughing with the amethysts "You look so happy!" "I won't be so happy when Blue and Yellow find out" Pink lamented.

"They won't be able to find out because..." she imagined Pink changing her form "you disguised yourself as a quartz!" "That's brilliant! Pearl thank you!" Pink responded.

"You're very welcome my Di-" Pearl suddenly couldn't see her diamond anywhere. "Down here!" Pink said. Pearl lowered her head to see that Pink Diamond had turned into a quartz, just Pearl imagined.

Almost immediately did Pearl and Pink Diamond under the guise of a Rose Quartz warped to the kindergarten, Rose in splendor of the moving injectors and active Quartzes.

"Pearl look! This is incredible! Come on, let's go check things out!" said Rose as she grabbed Pearl and went down to greet the other Quartzes.

Rose was in absolute amazement when she got brushed by a passing Quartz, nearly knocked to the ground. "Oh no! I'm so sorry! These amethyst guards can be quite rude!" said Pearl.

"But Pearl, don't you see what's happening!?" asked Rose "I'm fitting in! None of that saluting rubble! Thank you so much! Oh, I wouldn't have done this if it weren't for you!"

"Well, you're welcome my di-" "Shh! Pearl! You're gonna get us in trouble!" Pink whispered. "Very well my...Quartz" Pearl corrected herself as Rose giggled with mischievous glee as she went to greet some of her "fellow quartzes"

She even greeted one that had just come out of the ground. Just then, a lead Quartz came in "What's going on here! Our orders were to move out as soon as you emerged!"

"But 8XM hasn't come out of the ground yet!" One Quartz explained. "She'll have to catch up with us, now come on! Move out!" The Alpha Amethyst commanded as all the other quartzes followed.

Rose was about to join them until Pearl stopped her and reminded her she wasn't a Quartz "Let's not draw more attention to ourselves more than we already have."

"You're right....but things were getting really fun" Pink Diamond lamented. "Well, we could visit some of Earth's other features" Pearl suggested. "Pearl, you're so smart!" Rose complimented.

"So that's it!? It was all so she could go out and have some fun!?" Sapphire complained. "Well, that's how it started..." said Pearl.

Chapter 5: Rose Quartz Begins

Chapter Text

Back in the past, Pearl led Pink Diamond, under the guise of a Rose Quartz, out of the kindergarten and into a beautiful field of flowers.

Never before had she seen a flower meadow, except for in her garden, but none as beautiful as this. The horizon was pristine, almost like a dream, much more beautiful than Homeworld's drab cities which stretch all across the planet.

"So this is Earth..." Pink said in wonder. "And this is only a small percentage of the resources available for making gems on this planet" said Pearl.

"I have to see it all" said Pink. And so, Pink Diamond and her pearl began their little sightseeing tour of Earth. A horde of Green Pokemon could be spotted in the distance, galloping across the prairies.

Of this species, only one specimen of Virizion live to this day. Nobody knows how it manages to live and continue to live for so long.

Over their travels they started seeing so much other Pokemon living and flourishing here, she had seen organic lifeforms before, but none as plentiful as on this planet.

And off in the distance, she saw two humans building a house together, and another batch of humans collecting water.

Seeing all of this, Pink Diamond comes to a horrific realization. The sky grew dark as she and Pearl made their way back to the Kindergarten.

"Is everything alright, My Diamond? You seem troubled" asked Pearl.

"All this life that's been growing wild on Earth, none of it will survive my invasion... none of it" Pink Diamond answered "we're not creating life, we're taking life...and leaving nothing behind."

"Forgive me, My Diamond, I shouldn't have bought you to such a place" Pearl apologized. "No. I needed to see this" Pink Diamond said looking at the Kindergarten under a new context.

"So it was to protect the Earth! She had no idea what damage colonization was doing!" said Steven. "I knew it all along" said Connie.

"So what!? She suddenly started to care about The Earth!? Why did she have to rope us into this!?" Sapphire complained. "And why couldn't she stop the colonization herself!?" Bismuth added "she was a Diamond, wasn't she!?"

"Why can't people look at the positives here, for crying out loud?" Steven complained.

"She did try. She did everything she could" said Pearl "when she told the other diamonds that she didn't want to go through with the colonization of Earth, they told her to finish what she started. When she told them she wanted to preserve life on Earth, they built her The Zoo and threw a handful of humans and Pokemon in. She did everything she could as Pink Diamond, but her status meant nothing to the others. So, she decided to create a stand, as someone they couldn't ignore."

"The birth of Rose Quartz..." Steven whispered. "Her original plan was to scare every gem off the planet" said Pearl.

Rose still couldn't believe what she had seen, a fusion of two gems! Two different gems! "I still can't believe this! Only on Earth could something like this happen! Can all gems do this!? Why haven't I heard of this! I only heard that it was unheard of! Can you imagine what it must feel li-!?"

Rose was taken by surprise when Pearl lifted up Rose "Fusion...activate!" Pearl then quickly lost balance and dropped her.

"Oh! I thought if the ruby and sapphire could...but you're a diamond and I- Oh you should have me replaced immediately!" Pearl lamented.

"No!" said Rose. "But My Diamond, I've been imagining things when you haven't asked me too! I imagined that a ran away with you, A Rose Quartz" said Pearl "And that I'm not yours but you made me so happy anyway! Isn't that ridiculous? Tell me to stop!"

"Don't ever stop" said Rose as she placed her hand on Pearl's shoulder and the two began to combine, but immediately broke away due to Pearl's hesitance.

"This is very...not allowed" said Pearl. "I know, imagine how everyone must have reacted to...THE FUSION!!!" Rose realized "we left her there with Blue! Who knows what could be happening to-"

Suddenly a cry of "ouch!" caught their attention. Pearl readied her saber when she saw, Garnet! The Fusion! "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to fuse! I mean, this time we did" The young Garnet stammered.

"No no...,please, I'm glad to see you again" said Rose.

"Before Garnet, Rose was only fighting for Earth" Pearl explained "But Garnet changed everything. Rose wanted to fight for her, for gems who didn't fit the mold! And maybe she was being selfish and a little...selfish...but..."

"She was following us" said Sapphire. "Huh?" asked Pearl.  "We were following her, but Pink Diamond was following us! How could she not when you swept her off her feet?" Sapphire realized.

"Heh. Looks like you and Ruby were the real leader of The Crystal Gems" said Bismuth "it makes sense you'd take Rose's place when she left!"

"So...Mom was Pink Diamond...but she wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought she was" said Steven in relief.

"Lovely story" a man's voice answered. Steven, Connie, Pearl, Sapphire and Bismuth gasped as behind them was Red, this time wearing the outfit of a high ranking military personal.

Behind him were many armed men, women, and high level Pokemon. "Wh-what are you doing here?" asked Pearl.

"As of last night, the results were in. I am now World President Red. The people have spoken" Red announced "and from what I've heard, I'd like to take you in for further questioning!"

"Not without a fight!" said Bismuth "let's show 'em what we got, Tinkatuff!" Red looked to the woman beside him and nodded as she fired off what appeared to be a yellow net.

The yellow net shocked Bismuth, poofing her. Tinkatink screamed in horror and fury, ready to strike with its hammer, but some of the soldiers let out fire types, bombarding the Pokemon with fire type attacks.

"Stand down, Crystal Gems" Red ordered "everything I've just heard, your former leader being Pink Diamond, leads me to believe that your presence on this planet makes you an existential threat. I suggest you come quietly."

"We better do what he says, Pearl. He has us cornered" said Sapphire. Pearl had no choice but to come quietly.

But Steven, he didn't want this to happen "Stop! Wait! They did nothing wrong! They tried to protect Earth, didn't they?"

"They also drew attention back to Earth" said Red "they'll be awaiting Trial. Unlike Homeworld's courts, we're at least merciful, be thankful for that!"

"No! They're my family! I won't let you!" Steven took out a Pokeball. "Choose your next move wisely, kid. I don't want to try someone for something their parents did" Red glared at Steven.

"Steven...please, don't resist. I've seen what will happen. You will be found innocent in a court of law...but not in the court of public opinion" Sapphire warned "If you act, you'll risk never being able to show yourself in public again!"

"But, Sapphire! You and the other gems did nothing wrong!" said Steven. "I know, but, just like you told us to when Homeworld took you away, I want you to believe in us" said Sapphire.

"We'll figure something out, Steven" said Pearl. Steven and Connie wanted to do something, but it appeared the newly formed World Government had the upper hand this time.

Chapter 6: Gemcation

Chapter Text

Steven warped back home with Connie, hoping to tell Amethyst and Ruby about what happened, but they were nowhere to be seen.

"What happened!? Did they get them too!?" Connie asked worriedly. "They did" said Greg "I saw them take Amethyst and Ruby away from atop the lighthouse..."

"Dad!" said Steven "what's going on?" "I wish I could tell you, bud" said Greg "anyway, I need you to come with me. Peridot and Lapis aren't safe right now, the way things are. I was given the keys to a cottage. I was just about to take them there."

"How did you get a cottage on such short notice?" asked Steven. "Oh, The Lighthouse Keeper lent it to me" said Greg "I usually hangout by the lighthouse when I'm thinking of new songs. And when The Lighthouse Keeper heard the news, he went right to me and told me of a place he used to stay at before coming here to Beach City."

Steven was still silent, the thoughts of Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and Bismuth's fates weighed heavy on his mind.

"Look, I know you're worried about the gems, I am too, but let's get Lapis and Peridot to where they'll be safe first, that way we won't have to worry about them getting captured too." Greg said in a reassuring tone.

"Yeah...you do bring up a good point, yeah, let's get them out of Beach City! I won't lose Lapis and Peridot!" said Steven. Connie nodded "Yeah, I'm coming too!" said Connie.

"Alright! Now let's get this road trip going! Carabeana! Carabeana!" said Greg, swinging his van keys around in his finger.

Greg led Steven and Connie to the van. "Steven!" Lapis whispered happily. "Hey! Lapis can finally stand to be within twenty feet of me!" said Peridot.

"That's only because I have to" Lapis said, rolling her eyes. "Ponyo! Pon!" Ogerpon waved at Steven. "Bwark!" Popplio greeted Steven.

Steven and Connie happily took their seats in the van. Greg got into the driver's seat and turned to face the back of the van "I'm sorry you two have to be stowed in the very back of the van, but we'd get in trouble if anyone saw you two. So, as far as anyone knows, it's just me, my son and his girlfriend going on a nice weekend getaway, so, I want you and Peridot to keep quiet, it's fine if your Pokemon make noise, nobody would get mad at anybody for having Pokemon. So, please, let's keep a low profile."

Peridot and Lapis nodded. Greg nodded back and began driving into town. Looking out the window, Steven noticed several military people patrolling town.

When Greg said he wanted Peridot and Lapis to keep a low profile, he really meant it. If Lapis or Peridot is spotted, both they and the humans aboard the van would be in very big trouble.

"All this for world safety...this isn't the Red I knew when I was younger" said Greg "Pokemon Trainer Red was one of my idols when I was young. The first was Kerry Moonbeam who inspired my love for rock and roll music, and the second was Red. A kid, ten years younger than I am, taking down a ruthless criminal organization and defeating the Pokemon League of Kanto!? Like, that was believed to be impossible for a kid his age, but he did it. I was a 20 year old dreamer in community college when I heard about that, and it inspired me to finally pursue my dreams of being a rock star...and if that hadn't happened, you wouldn't be here Steven...I just wonder what happened to make him like this."

The van remained silent as they continued to drive, before they were stopped by Nanafua and her son, Kofi.

"Hello, Mr. Universe, I understand you're going on a nice weekend getaway. So we prepped several pizzas, just in case you get hungry" said Nanafua.

"They're on the house" said Kofi "your "niece" who occasionally stops by sometimes helps out at the store, so, I thought I'd repay her kindness."

"Oh! Thanks" said Greg accepting the pizza. "Oh! And here are some free fries" said Mr. Fryman, approaching the other side of the van "your "niece" helped out at my restaurant too, and pizza goes good with fries!"

And then, Sadie and Lars came by with a box of donuts "She helped out here too! Some snacks for the road!" said Sadie.

"Wow, thanks, this is awfully generous of you all!" said Greg "My "Niece" is waiting by our cottage so, I better get going before sundown."

As they drove out of town, thankfully avoiding suspicion, Steven, Connie, and Greg divided the free pizzas among themselves and their Pokemon.

Peridot and Lapis don't eat so they politely declined, but they allow their Pokemon to have some slices. "So, this is Sylveon's Daughter, huh?" said Greg.

"Yeah, so far she's a bit different from how her Dad was, but, she eats like he did" said Steven. "Well, I think she's adorable!" said Connie, scratching Sylveon behind its ears.

"I'm surprised this van could handle the weight of all our Pokemon out here at once" said Steven. "Especially Corviknight" said Connie "Corviknight aren't exactly light Pokemon.

"You kidding me? I've carried my whole life in this van! And that was a heavier load than this!" said Greg.

"Oh! Steven, when did you get the Floette?" asked Connie, noticing AZ's floette in the van.

"Oh! It belongs to AZ, he's the tall guy from Aquamarine's ship. I'm watching it for him while he watches over Sylveon"

"I gotta say, I've never seen this kind of flower before, except for illustrations in books, I think this species of flower is extinct" said Connie.

"Well, apparently it's a Pokemon from ancient times, so it probably is" Steven shrugged. "Hey! I think you're forgetting to thank someone for the free nourishment" said Peridot.

"Huh?" Steven and Connie asked.

"Oh yeah, I don't know if you've noticed, but Peridot's been going around town helping people out, part of this "Objectively Superior Crystal Gems" thing she has going on" said Greg "but, yeah, apparently the townspeople have gotten used to her help, even welcoming it."

"Oh yeah! I almost forgot about that!" said Steven.

"Heh. No need to thank me! And just so you know, Peridot's Objectively Superior Crystal Gems is always open to new members, so if you want to join a real team, I give you an eternally open offer, Steven!" Peridot bragged.

"Still though, all that community service you've been doing has really paid off, Peridot" said Greg. "I have to admit, I don't hate you as much as I used to" said Lapis.

"Yes! Praise! Give me more!" Peridot said excitedly.

"Anyway, looks like we're almost there! Now remember, The Lighthouse Keeper said he hasn't used the property in years, so, the place might be a fixer-upper, but it's far enough out of the way that I don't think we'll be spotted by any of these World Government types" said Greg.

"Thanks again for taking us somewhere where we can hide out" said Lapis "but won't this violate my parole?"

"Don't worry about that, in fact, your parole officer, Looker, suggested I look into taking you out of town as soon as the idea of a World Government started to become popular, he promised to keep this little excursion under wraps" said Greg "I don't think he agrees with the kind of protection and justice this new world government is offering, he thinks that it may be too much."

Soon, an old looking cottage was appearing in the windshield. It looked like a rather old structure, but it looks like it's held together despite years of underuse.

The windows were intact, the front steps could use replacing but otherwise the cottage seemed serviceable. "I must admit, I was expecting worse" said Greg "but we may need to be prepared to do some dusting when we get in.

Greg looked at the instructions The Lighthouse Keeper gave him "The generator is environmentally friendly, just use an electric type attack at the antenna and you'll have enough electricity for two weeks, then simply fire another electric type attack. Seems simple enough. Toxtricity, give the generator some juice!"

Toxtricity played the organs on its chest and let loose a discharge towards the generator, the antenna caught the electricity and began jolting to life.

"Alright, let's go inside and cross our fingers cleanup won't be too hard!" said Greg.

Chapter 7: Lapis and Peridot's Safehouse

Chapter Text

Greg went to the front door of the cottage and unlocked the door. "Heh, back in my day we used to check which house was available and snuck in" said Greg.

"That sounds kind of illegal, Dad" said Steven. "I was younger and reckless back then" said Greg. As soon as they entered, the cottage was dusty in some places, but otherwise clean.

The lights still worked, and as for the decor "Oh my gosh! Look at all these vintage action figures and toys!" said Greg, running towards a shelf "an officially licensed Star Wars Lightsaber! All I had when I was a kid was the cheap knock off light sword. And Action Hank! I wanted one for my tenth birthday...but all my parents got my was Army Henry, also a cheap knock off. Thank goodness for my Aunt and Uncle! They gave me Rillaboom back when he was just a Grookey!"

"Boom!" Rillaboom grunted in approval. "And oh, what's this!? Vintage video game consoles! Nintendo, Sega, Amiga! And is that a pinball machine in the corner!? I love pinball!" said Greg.

"What's Pinball?" asked Peridot. "It's a game, you pull this lever to get the ball on the table and then you use these paddles here to keep the ball from falling off the table" said Greg.

"That sounds awfully simplistic and childish" Peridot criticized as she pressed the start button and pulled the lever. The ball began moving on the bored, hitting various objects and raising the score.

But then the ball rolled right in between the paddles, falling right off the table, ending the game. "What!? But I pushed the flippers!" Peridot complained.

"Oooh, yeah, right down the middle, that'll happen" Greg commented "not as annoying as when it rolls in that part behind the right flipper."

Peridot then started up another game. "Well Lapis, I know you're not very fond of Peridot but, at least now she has something to keep her distracted from you" said Greg.

"Thanks again, Greg. This place is perfect" said Lapis. "How about we stay here with you and Peridot?" asked Steven. "Yeah, that way you two won't feel isolated!" said Greg.

"That would be nice. Although, I do have Popplio, and I don't mind Peridot's Pokemon, but still, I appreciate the company" said Lapis.

"I think I'll stay here tonight too, I already called my Mom about it" said Connie "It has been quite the long drive." "Yeah, it has been. All that sitting down is ironically quite tiring" said Steven.

"Fine by me, there are three bedrooms here" said Greg. "Let's check up the upstairs and pick a room" said Steven. Steven and Connie went upstairs.

Greg decided to go up with them and pick out a bedroom himself. Steven and Connie checked out what appeared to be a master bedroom, it was the biggest bedroom in the cottage.

"Wow, look at the bed. Big enough for two people" said Steven. "Don't you two get any ideas" Greg warned from the hallway.

"Da-ad!" Steven called out in embarrassment. "Hey, Steven, check out The Sunset!" said Connie. The sunset was overlooking a large valley behind the cottage, the light reflected off the small lake, making it glimmer.

"Wow...Who'd have thought The Lighthouse Keeper had a place like this?" said Steven. "By the way, are you sure we can trust The Lighthouse Keeper?" asked Connie.

"When I was kidnapped by those three guys last year, It was The Lighthouse Keeper who told The Gems where they took me" said Steven "and back when Amethyst cracked her gem, he asked if she was okay."

After that there was a brief silence as they continued to look at the wonderous view of nature. The two then shared a glace at each other and blushed.

"I...uh...guess we should decide which room we're staying in..." said Connie. "Uh...yeah..." said Steven. The two stood there awkwardly but slowly moved in for a kiss.

It was then that Eevee hopped up on the window sill in between them as their lips made contact with Eevee's cheeks rather than the each other's lips.

"Eevee" Steven and Connie said in unison. "Aw, I think she just wants attention" said Connie as she scratched the baby Pokemon's chin.

Eevee leaned its face more into Connie's hand, enjoying the scratches, as indicated by how fast its tail was wagging.

After the two spent some time fussing over Eevee, Steven and Connie picked their rooms, they had a coin toss to see who would get the big master bedroom, and Connie won.

Greg was a little bummed out that he didn't get a say in the decision over who would get that bedroom.

Later that night, after eating the last pizza for dinner, the three humans decided to call it a night. Peridot was still addicted to the pinball game "Good luck on beating the high score" said Greg "just keep it down."

"Yes, I will, now shh! I must concentrate if I am to beat this "N" person's high score!" said Peridot. Steven was brushing his teeth. Lapis was sitting next to the filled bathtub, which she let her Popplio out to swim in.

"Good night, Lapis" said Steven. "Sleep well, Steven" Lapis answered.

It was a peaceful starry night, as Steven curled up in bed, still thinking of how the day started. Thinking of how Red straight up arrested the gems, even though they had done nothing wrong.

He kept thinking of it as he drifted off to sleep, thinking of Red and how to stop him. That's when a vision of the back of Red's head popped up.

Steven was headed right for him...into Red! Was this going to be a repeat of the time he took over Lars's body as he slept!?

No, instead of waking up in Red's body...he was somewhere different, he was on top of Red's head, an entire landscape atop of Red's head.

"I...I must be inside his mind...maybe, maybe I can change it and convince him to let The Gems go!" said Steven. "Don't get cocky, you little s***!" A threatening voice boomed.

Behind him was Red himself, a gigantic version of him, glaring at him with fiery fury.

Chapter 8: What's on Red's Mind?

Chapter Text

"I am going to give you one warning...leave. Now." Red's mental self warned Steven. "Please! I just want you to release the gems! They've done nothing wrong!" Steven begged.

"Be that as it may, they're the targets of a large interplanetary empire. They pose a potential threat just by being here" said Red "I'm doing this to protect the world!"

"The safety of the world shouldn't have to come at the cost of everyone's freedom!" Steven argued "don't you see? You're being just like The Diamonds!"

"You're young, kid. Naive" said Red "you think you're any better, entering someone's mind, thinking they can change their hearts? What do you think this is, an ATLUS game?"

"The gems are family to me, Amethyst is like a cool older sister, Garnet's the wise aunt I can come to for advice. And Pearl...she's the closest thing I have to a mom! Come on, isn't there anyone you're close too!?"

"I did what I had to, to keep them safe" said Red "they're safer when I'm not close them." "Why!? Why would you abandon the people who care about you?" asked Steven.

"You don't need to know...now...leave!" Red's mental self grew larger and larger. Steven stumbled back and tripped, when on his back, he noticed a tower in Red's mindscape.

And atop the tower, he noticed the figure of someone. He began to piece together something, the manifestation he was talking to, it couldn't be the real Red.

The Real Red must be atop that tower. He decided to get up and run for it, to get to the tower, to the real Red.

A sudden beam nearly hit Steven from behind "Don't you dare, Brat! I've mastered several forms of mental self defense in case anyone tried entering my mind with Psychic Pokemon!"

Several walls began rising in front of Steven, almost as if trapping him in a labyrinth. Several beams began firing at Steven as soon as he was trapped!

He had no choice but to navigate the maze while avoiding his pursuer. He had to keep running. No time to think, just run, run, run!

He didn't know if any corner would lead to a dead end, but he didn't think about it. Soon, Red's Mental Avatar fired a blast so powerful, it caused the "ground" beneath Steven to cave in, causing Steven to fall into Red's subconsciousness.

Steven groaned as he got up, and floating around him were hundreds of what appeared to be TV screens. They showed footage of Red from various stages of life.

"These must be his memories..." said Steven. One showed Red picking up a letter, the envelope had a huge capital "R" emblazoned on it. When young, 10 year old Red read the letter, a look a fear shown itself upon his face.

The memory then showed her mother being approached by a Team Rocket Grunt. The Young trainer sprung into action, saving his mother using his Pikachu.

Another memory veered into Steven's view. "Sorry, Kid, but even Team Rocket's remnants are too much for us to handle" said A man in a suit "but, you're a powerful trainer, I'm sure you can handle it."

And in another memory, Red got a hot coffee cup thrown at him "I worked at becoming League Champion for 13 years and I could never do it! You just show up one day and get the title!? An inexperienced kid!? You don't deserve it! I worked for it!" A balding middle aged man in his 30s growled.

The memories continued to display themselves to Steven. "Red, please! Don't leave! Not with those people coming after you!" Red's mother pleaded.

"I'm sorry, Mom. Those guys coming after me are the reason I must leave. If I don't, they'll come after you too" Red explained to his mother "you're in danger if I stay. Please understand..."

Various memories of events afterward showed themselves. Motels and hotels rejecting Red due to Team Rocket remnants out for revenge coming after him. Bitterly jealous trainers who couldn't defeat the Indigo Plateau challenge throwing shade at him, challenging him out of the blue.

Although they were memories of all different events, they were all of the same thing, so many people coming after him, Red not knowing any rest, before secluding himself on Mt. Silver for a while.

And then another memory showed up, one of a man around Red's age talking to him "Red, please, come to Alola with me. It's great offer. The world is different, Team Rocket's given up for good. You can come out from hiding. I know we've had our differences in the past...but, you've inspired so many young trainers. You should know, my Grandpa sent one of them to challenge you, the kid who got all badges of Johto and Kanto!"

After all that, one final memory, one of Red taking down a team rocket assassin.

"Heh! We've been waiting for you to come out of hiding. You take us out, we'll just heal our Pokemon to come back!" The assassin mocked "Giovanni may be gone! But his legacy lives on! You'd have to kill every one of us who comes after you if you really want to know peace!"

Red's fearful expression, turned into a more expressionless one "Fine...maybe I will." "Huh?" The Assassin murmured. "Pikachu...end him with your strongest thunderbolt" Red ordered.

"Pika...?" Pikachu asked with an uncertain expression on its face. "I know...but he's right. They're not gonna stop coming" said Red.

Pikachu thought about it...but realized he was right. "No! No! Wait!" The Assassin pleaded in sudden realization. Steven winced watching the rest of the memory.

Suddenly, Red's angry face was right before him "You...should not...have seen...any of that!!!"

Chapter 9: Strong Leadership

Chapter Text

Bismuth had awoken in the Prison cell where The rest of the gems were being kept. "Hunh? How long was I out?" asked Bismuth. "A pretty long time..." said Pearl.

"Quick! Let's get out of here! These human prisons look week! Just a yellow hologram keeping us in? Ha! Even iron bars would do a better job than that!" Bismuth laughed.

"Bismuth! Don't!" warned Ruby and Sapphire. Bismuth yelped in pain when she touched the yellow Hologram. "They managed to replicate Homeworld Technology" said Pearl "this is modern day Gem Technology we're unfamiliar with..."

"It's like they're trying to replicate Yellow Diamond's power..." Bismuth commented. "Huh? Hey! Look across the hall!" Amethyst pointed to the cell across from them.

Pearl, Ruby, and Sapphire looked and there he was, Nate, former chief of the Unova Branch of Legend Watch, imprisoned.

"Hey, what are you doing here, you jerk!?" Ruby raged. "I never expected to find you here" said Pearl "I thought you would be on this "Red" person's side, considering you never trusted us to begin with."

"Yeah...that's a fair assumption" said Nate "and for the record, I was on Red's side...was" said Nate. "What happened? He too cool for you?" asked Amethyst.

"No. It happened when those people got abducted by those three gems" said Nate. "You mean Aquamarine and the two Topazes?" asked Bismuth.

"Yeah, me and Red, we were right there when those teens got abducted..." said Nate "I...I wanted to help, but Red, he took out a Pokeball jamming signal device...he let those kids get kidnapped, just so he can hold it against The Former Pokemon Association."

"What!? That's...that's despicable!" said Sapphire. "He overpowered me...It makes my stomach curl" said Nate "forced to do nothing when I wanted to do something! When I could have done something!"

"So, how did you end up in here?" asked Amethyst. "I threatened to tell everyone the truth..." said Nate "now I realize that maybe the Pokemon association was right to let me go...still, that Red...when I looked into his eyes, I saw emptiness. He's not evil, but rather, he's convinced that he's doing the right thing, which is actually much worse."

Meanwhile, in Red's Consciousness. "So...you saw my memories...what am I going to do with you now?" Red's mental self said sinisterly "you know, if you die in your dreams, you just wake up. Wanna know what will happen if you "die" in someone else's mind?"

Steven backed off "Red...I've seen what you've been through, but that's no excuse for what you're doing! Can't you see!? I know you're trying to do the right thing! But everything you're doing...it's wrong!"

"Perhaps from your perspective...but sacrifices must be made for the greater good" said Red "you are young, so you cannot possibly understand the meaning of sacrifice...but the truth is, my actions are all those of justice, true justice. I am going to give you one more chance to leave my mind and forget all you've seen."

Steven looked up at the tower from the hole he fell through "This isn't the real you, I'm talking to, is it? You're not the real consciousness of the legendary trainer, Red!"

"What?" Red asked. "And since I'm dreaming, then maybe..." Steven imagined his sandals were rocket boosters.

He launched himself out of the hole and flew straight towards the tower the real consciousness of Red was barricaded in.

He crashed through the "window" of the tower, and there it was, Trainer Red's real consciousness. Its appearance was very similar to Red's younger self!

"Red...I made it. It's over" said Steven. When suddenly a "rock" made its way to Steven, which he managed to dodge at the last minute.

"NOTHING IS OVER! NOTHING!!!" Red fumed, angrily glaring at Steven with teary eyes "you just don't get to decide when something's over! I never got to! Those damn Rockets! They just kept coming! They never stopped coming! I was only ten years old, dammit! I never asked for any of this!"

"I know, I've seen your memories, but it's all in the past, isn't it?" asked Steven.

"Maybe for you!!! Maybe for others! But not me! It never stopped for me!" said Red "that's why I had to kill them! Those ex-Team Rocket guys! I beat their boss twenty years ago, and they still couldn't get over it! That's why I can't get over it! I couldn't do anything! But now, now I can! Can't you see I'm doing this for you! So that kids can grow up without having to fight for their lives like I did!"

"But The Gems aren't Team Rocket! They've been protecting Earth for thousands of years!" Steven argued "you can't just go around treating everyone like they're the enemy."

"What gives you the right to be so high and mighty! The Gem Empire is mad at you because of who your mother is, aren't they!? They think you ARE your mother!" said Red "and those three, are pushing to make you your mother's replacement, aren't they? So, don't act like your above me, because sooner or later, you'll become like me! Then! Then you'll understand!"

"No...no, I'll never be like you" said Steven. "You don't know that! You're going to be fighting for your life if and when the Gem Empire comes!" said Red.

"And if it does, it won't let it happen! I won't let myself become like you!" said Steven "you may have driven everyone away, but I haven't! I won't! Now that I know what to avoid!"

"You say that like it's so easy! What makes you so special!?" Red kept up his dismissive facade.

"Nothing. And I may make it sound easy, but it's not. I'm scared. Just like you! But you don't have to be alone! Please, you gotta stop this!" Steven pleaded "just look at yourself! You've barricaded your true self behind these wall. Putting on a huge facade! You've denied yourself the chance to grow up...to grow up in here" Steven put his hand where his heart is.

Meanwhile, in reality, Red got up abruptly from his desk and looked in the mirror, trying to hold back the tears "No...G-get out my mind you brat...please, just leave!"

"I can't! I don't trust anybody, except my Pokemon! Isn't that messed up?" Red's mental self sniffled "My Pokemon, they were supposed to be my friends, not my body guards! I just wanted to be the very best...I never asked for a target on my back! I tried reaching out to others, but nobody would help me! They were too scared of Team Rocket...where were the grown ups when I needed them? Where were the damn grown ups?..."

"They...they weren't there for you, so you had to become the grown up" said Steven "you've built all these walls around yourself to keep the people you love safe. But the world's changed in the past 20 years. You don't have hide behind all these mental walls. The grown ups may not have been there for you when you were a kid, but now you're the grown up. You can do for the kids of today, what the grown ups of yesterday couldn't...and you can decide what type of grown up you can be! You can be a better grown up...!"

"But...how do I do that?" asked Red. "Let's meet in real life..." said Steven "then we can discuss things further."

Back in reality Red stood at his mirror in tears "Alright kid...we'll talk...I'll arrange an appointment...."
