She sat down and sighed, then looked over him as Chopper left the room. Luffy was hurt again but peacefully sleeping now. He had a bandage around his head and a few other small scratches but ultimately was going to be fine. Nami smiled and held his hand, watching him sleep. It had been a nice, quiet day but was abruptly interrupted by an enemy pirate ship. They had made quick work of them but Chopper quickly whisked Luffy away to his office to treat home despite his protests that he was fine.
Once treated he promptly fell asleep and Nami volunteered to stay by his side. She knew he was okay, he had barely been hurt this time but she still worried. She looked at him and silently thanked him for always keeping them safe. He always risked so much for them and she wouldn’t usually admit it but she had so much love in her heart for him. She loved him so much, almost like a brother and there was no way she could ever repay him for all he had done for her and she couldn’t help herself, she leaned down and pulled him into a hug.
She had actually found herself doing this quite a bit when he was asleep and hurt, having exhausted himself to protect them. She knew it was a little weird but she couldn’t help herself. She was grateful, and he never woke up. He always worked himself to exhaustion to save her, just like he had everyone else on the crew. That’s how it always was. He would get hurt- and they would be safe. Even though he only had minor injuries this time, she knew he would continue to do that until the day he died. It just went to show that he would spare no expense to protect his nakama. No threat, no matter how minor, would go unanswered. He would throw away even a nice day like today to ensure each of them were safe and happy.
She had begun to love these moments, when no one else was around and she could just hold him. She would just stay there feeling his heart beating in his chest. Feeling his breathing. Breathing in his scent that had become so familiar. He was always so warm. She would just hold him and remind herself that he was alive and not going anywhere. As long as he was warm and breathing he was alive, and would protect her.
She stayed there and listened to his heart. He took a breath deeper than the rest and she thought she felt his heartbeat accelerate slightly when suddenly arms curled around her and she tensed. After a moment she pulled away.
“Luffy- you’re awake.”
He was smiling at her. She turned her face away blushing.
“I’m sorry I- I didn’t mean to wake you-“
“It’s okay,” he said.
He smiled and laughed to himself.
“Shishishi… it was a nice way to wake up.”
Nami was silent, still a little embarrassed. He just laid there with his eyes closed and a bright smile. Nami looked back at him, a little chagrined at having been caught, but that sunny smile soon put one on her face and it stayed there.
