Chapter Text

This is.. ridiculous.

Not that you are ungrateful. Just… it’s a lot.

When your grandfather passed away you were certain you weren’t going to be left with anything.

You two were close yeah, but…. Close enough to have him put you in the will to inherit his huge ass house? Mansion? House?

You’re not entirely sure why. Your parents have a house, yeah, but maybe your older sister?

Surely not you.

You didn’t complain though, when the judge had said it was your name in the will. Your parents were happy for you, and your sister joked about sharing—thankfully there was no bad blood or anything, it was just weird, but you were thankful.

You moved in a week ago, carrying all of your belongings into this home, which… was not a lot. You lived in an apartment, so truthfully you did not have much stuff to furnish this place.

Your grandfather left behind a few chairs, couches, tables, and lamps. But you had a TV, your bed, shower stuff, and kitchen things. There were a few rugs you found in the attic, but… other than that, it was just a tad empty.

You slept your first night in your grandpa’s old room. It was dark and quiet, save for the house settling. It wasn’t OLD, just… well lived in.

You weren’t sure if you would do well living here alone.

You were thankful for the space, though, it helps with being an artist and all. Not to brag,… this space will be great for an office or two. Not that you need two.

After the week of living there, your sister visited, bringing by some of mom and dad’s old kettles and tea cups, just for fun.

Truthfully your family was also worried about you living in this big house,
“this will help you be more comfortable! Give you some familiarity!” your sister said, finding a nice spot for the kettle and tea cups on the windowsill of the kitchen.

You were sitting at the island, in one of those tall bar chairs, hand holding up your face as you sighed.
“I already told you, if you want to move in just ask, we can set up like… a rental agreement or something.” You said, with a huffing tone.

Your older sibling giggled, rolling her eyes, “and I told YOU that as much as I would love to, I can’t. You know that Harley and I are finding a place together right now. I wouldn’t feel good about moving into a house with you and my fiancé. No offense..." she said, turning and leaning on the island. "We just want to start fresh together in a place of our own. Besides, you inherited this house; I'm not taking that from you.”

You suppose you understood, it’s just lonely.

Your sister came close, with a planning glance “What if we got you some roommates?” she said, you lifted a brow, “Roommates?” not that you were.. opposed. It was a fine idea but..

“how exactly do we find roommates big enough to live in the…..1..2….4 empty rooms in this place.” You said, and it was true. Along with the less furnished areas your grandfather also had like… 4 empty bedrooms. Before, they were just used as guest rooms for the grandchildren, or one, his office. But you have NO idea how YOU were supposed to fill them up. Not to mention the stars-forsaken attic.

Your sister groaned, obviously annoyed with your reluctance. “C'mon… I can help you put out roommate-wanted signs or something. Who knows! You might even get a monster roommate or two!” she said with some enthusiasm.

Oh yes, something you had slightly forgotten was—this was Ebbot. Also known as the home, the city, of where monsters rose back to the surface from the underground—a place they had once been cast away to long long, LONG ago.

It was a process, for everyone, and it still is. You’re 23 now, but when you were 17 you were in senior year looking at the TV as they reported a monster emerging with a small human child in hand with a larger … goat woman? Announcing the arrival of Monsters.

After that, the government implemented some laws, there were rules made, and war almost started. The king, Asgore, another goat monster (Married???) had declared himself no longer king, and he even opened up a florist shop. It was a bit strange seeing all of those big and small monsters so sad, you honestly felt bad but, you suppose you understood.

The world had learned of the trials the monsters had been put through, it even was added to history books after 2 years of transcribing them from monster records. It sure made college a bit more fun.

You remember even seeing a VERY large skeleton monster who was deemed by the ambassador, the human child frisk who had saved the monsters, as the mascot of monsters. Honestly, you thought it was pretty cool, he got a lot of popularity after that.

You sighed long and hard, putting your face on the cool marble island.

“….fine. fine, I'll allow you to help me find people to stay here, just… just don’t make me sound too desperate, please. I don’t want to live with just ANYONE, I need trustworthy people.” You said, lifting a finger in the direction you assumed she was standing. You were incorrect as you felt your sister lay her head on top of yours.

“I promise, I'll make some flyers and put your number and email on it. I’ll be sure to put it in businesses and whatnot. Monster ones too, I know you’re not…what’s a good term? Spiciest?.” She said with a giggle.

You were… pretty excited.

And a little scared.

You had no idea what you were getting into genuinely.

Your sister was not lying when she said she would put flyers everywhere.

You were out in town trying to do some shopping. Groceries, personal items, stuff like that.

As soon as you enter a “Monster & Human” grocery, you see a bright flyer with your number, email, and a candid picture of you on it as well, with a description of you needing a few roommates.

You inhaled big, letting it all out in an exasperated way, as you grabbed your cart and began to shop.

You made your way through the isles of pasta and sauces and canned goods. You noticed a lot of monster-made items, like magic-infused pasta and canned… Echo Petals? You weren’t sure what that was obviously.

You grabbed a few boxes of angel hair noodles and some jars of pasta, knowing that the most you’ll make for yourself is some sort of quick meal that you can have leftovers with.

You move on, entering the produce section, trying to determine which fruits were regular human ones and which were monster fruits.

Truthfully, you could not tell. So you just sighed and grabbed a bag of apples, the only other fruit you knew for a fact was human-grade.

You had nothing against magic food just…. You were scared your human body wouldn’t handle it.

You made your way to the personal hygiene isle, hoping to get more face cream and shampoo, walking through you found the face washes, and reached to grab one.

Then jumped when you saw a very bony arm connected to a bright red glove reach for a jar two shelves up.
