One Last Mission

Summary:

While the rest of the Avengers had their endgame, Steve is still missing his. Steve decides to go back in time to see his best girl, his endgame. This is Steve's last mission.

I should probably clarify that I have not read any of the comics, this is purely from the movies and my own little pea brain.

Notes:

I love love looove Steve Rogers and Bucky.

This is a short chapter because I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to layout the story. Please bare with me as I do have school.

Chapter 1: Don’t do anything stupid ‘til I get back.

Chapter Text

“You okay, Cap?” Sam asked with an eyebrow raised. Of course, Cap would not be able to admit what he was doing– not to Sam anyway. Sam tried to tag along with him, but Cap knew that he couldn’t.

He looked around at his surroundings. Trees surrounded him, blocking the view of the battleground he had fought on just days before. Banner fiddled around with the machine with his working arm, the other one still black from the stones. Sam looked at Rogers reassuringly with his arms crossed.

And then there was Bucky. He had a sad smile on his face. Bucky knew Cap wasn’t coming back. He knew that Cap needed to see her again. Cap did his part here, now it was time to go back and do what Stark told him to do. “Get a life.” Cap was still searching for a way to get Bucky to go back with him, but the night before Bucky had made it clear that he wasn’t going back.

Cap told Bucky his plan to go see his girl last night. He expected Bucky to get angry and not understand; however, he just nodded. Cap told Bucky everything, but he just nodded. He told his best friend that it was nothing personal, but Bucky just nodded.

Bucky wasn’t angry, or upset. He was happy for his friend. He was happy that his friend might finally get that dance. He was happy that his friend might finally get to ask the band to play something slow. For the first time in what felt like forever, Bucky was happy–as happy as he could anyway.

“Yea, I’m fine. I still don’t think I trust this time travel stuff,” Cap sighed.

“You’ll be alright. Now just remember that you will have all the time you need; for us you will be gone only a couple seconds,” interrupted Branner.

“All the time I need…” Cap repeated. He turned to Bucky one last time. “Don’t do anything stupid ‘til I get back.”

“How can I? You’re taking all the stupid with you,” Bucky replied with a faint smile. “I’m gonna miss you buddy.”

“It’s going to be okay, Buck.” Cap stepped onto the Quantum tunnel and pushed the button and somehow formed a suit around his current one. Stark had tried to explain how it worked one time, but Cap never really got the hang of it.

“You ready Cap?” Bruce asked. Cap just nodded as he picked up Thor’s “small” hammer. “All right, we’ll meet you back here, okay?”

“You bet.” The lights on the tunnel flared. The helmet on the suit closed.

“Going quantum in three…” Cap braced himself.

“Two…” Cap locked eyes with Sam, who just stared back.

“One.” Cap quickly looked over again at Buck before Bruce pulled the lever and everything disappeared. But before everything went away, Cap could’ve sworn he saw Buck tearing up.

Chapter 2: Chapter 2: "It's been a long, long time"

Summary:

Cap meets some familiar faces in an alleyway.

Chapter Text

Steve felt the world crumple around him. Not crumble, rush. It rushed past him until everything was just swirls and lines of color around him. He had flown before, but this was different, and it never seemed to get easier. This wasn’t like the jumps in the spaceship with Rocket or flying into the sea. It didn’t matter how many stones he went to put back, he hated this part.

The first time he traveled, he was scared. So much was on the line. He couldn’t fail Bucky, not again. But this time, he felt like he was just going home. He had been away for so long, all he wanted was to feel like he had a home again.

Just as fast as the colors came, the colors faded away. Suddenly, Cap stood in an alleyway. He took a moment to regain his footing. He dug around in the suitcase to get his clothes to cover the suit he traveled in. Just as he did so, he heard a crash coming from the back of the alley.

A tall man stood over a smaller one. Punch. The small man hit the ground only to push himself back up. Punch. Down and up again. “You just don’t know when to give up, do ya?” said the taller man.

“I could do this all day.”

Steve had forgotten what it was like to have such big ideas but not the body to contain them all. Not one that could fight back. Steve walked up to the man and yanked the back of his shirt, sending him across the alleyway. Shocked, the man froze before pushing himself back up on his feet. Little Steve looked up, dazed and confused. But before Cap could do anything else, the man went to shove him. Cap didn’t even move. Instead, he pushed back, once again leaving the man on the floor. This time, however, the man just huffed and quickly left the alleyway.

“Uh, thanks, sir. Usually my friend breaks up the fights I get into, but I’m not too sure where he is.”

“Don’t worry, kid, one day when you’re 93 you’ll save all of New York.”

This comment only made Little Steve look more confused.

“There you are! Come on, we have to go to the future Steve.” Little Steve rose up at the sound of the new voice. Cap turned to see Bucky. His Bucky. The Bucky that protected him. This Bucky had all his limbs, but most importantly, looked happy. Even though this Buck looked happy, Little Steve most definitely did not. He just started staring at the uniform Buck wore.

“You got your orders?” asked Little Steve.

“107th. Sergeant James Barnes. Shipping out for England first thing tomorrow. But let's not dwell on that, we have to see a flying car!”

“Oh uh, well, I dunno.” replied Little Steve. Finally, Buck acknowledged Cap.

“I’m sorry, who are you?” Cap just stared. This was so surreal. Buck was looking at him like he didn’t even know him. How could he? This Buck only knew Steve that couldn’t defend himself in a fist fight and couldn’t even gain the courage to ask a girl to dance.

“Everyone calls me Cap.”

“Well, Cap, I’m James but everyone calls me Bucky. Would you like to go to the future too?” asked Buck, laughing at himself.

“You know what? Sounds great.”
